Volume Product

Our purpose here is to give an overview of known results and open questions concerning the volume product ${\mathcal P}(K)=\min_{z\in K}{\rm vol}(K){\rm vol}((K-z)^*)$ of a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We present a number of upper and lower bounds for ${\mathcal P}(K)$, in particular, we discuss the Mahler's conjecture on the lower bound of ${\mathcal P}(K)$, which is still open. We also show connections of ${\mathcal P}(K)$ with different parts of modern mathematics, including Geometric Number Theory, Convex Geometry, Analysis, Harmonic Analysis as well as Systolic and Symplectic Geometries and Probability.

Asymptotics of the Inertia Moments and the Variance Conjecture in Schatten Balls

We study the first and second orders of the asymptotic expansion, as the dimension goes to infinity, of the moments of the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of a uniformly distributed matrix in the p-Schatten unit ball. We consider the case of matrices with real, complex or quaternionic entries, self-adjoint or not. When p > 3, this asymptotic expansion allows us to establish a generalized version of the variance conjecture for the family of p-Schatten unit balls of self-adjoint matrices.

Sumset estimates in convex geometry

Sumset estimates, which provide bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of finite sets in a group, form an essential part of the toolkit of additive combinatorics. In recent years, probabilistic or entropic analogs of many of these inequalities were introduced. We study analogues of these sumset estimates in the context of convex geometry and Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb R}^n$. First, we observe that, with respect to Minkowski summation, volume is supermodular to arbitrary order on the space of convex bodies. Second, we explore sharp constants in the convex geometry analogues of variants of the Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities. In the last section of the paper, we provide connections of these inequalities to the classical Rogers-Shephard inequality.

Equipartitions and Mahler volumes of symmetric convex bodies

Following ideas of Iriyeh and Shibata we give a short proof of the three-dimensional Mahler conjecture {\mf for symmetric convex bodies}. Our contributions include, in particular, simple self-contained proofs of their two key statements. The first of these is an equipartition (ham sandwich type) theorem which refines a celebrated result of Hadwiger and, as usual, can be proved using ideas from equivariant topology. The second is an inequality relating the product volume to areas of certain sections and their duals. We observe that these ideas give a large family of convex sets in every dimension for which the Mahler conjecture holds true. Finally we give an alternative proof of the characterization of convex bodies that achieve the equality case and establish a {\mf new} stability result.

Concentration of information content for convex measures

We establish sharp exponential deviation estimates of the information content as well as a sharp bound on the varentropy for the class of convex measures on Euclidean spaces. This generalizes a similar development for log-concave measures in the recent work of Fradelizi, Madiman and Wang (2016). In particular, our results imply that convex measures in high dimensions are concentrated in an annulus between two convex sets (as in the log-concave case) despite their possibly having much heavier tails. Various tools and consequences are developed, including a sharp comparison result for Rényi entropies, inequalities of Kahane-Khinchine type for convex measures that extend those of Koldobsky, Pajor and Yaskin (2008) for log-concave measures, and an extension of Berwald's inequality (1947).

Geometry and volume product of finite dimensional Lipschitz-free spaces

The goal of this paper is to study geometric and extremal properties of the convex body $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$, which is the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free Banach space associated with a finite metric space $M$. We investigate $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-sums, in particular we characterize the metric spaces such that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Hanner polytope. We also characterize the finite metric spaces whose Lipschitz-free spaces are isometric. We discuss the extreme properties of the volume product $\mathcal{P}(M)=|B_{\mathcal F(M)}|\cdot|B_{\mathcal F(M)}^\circ|$, when the number of elements of $M$ is fixed. We show that if $\mathcal P(M)$ is maximal among all the metric spaces with the same number of points, then all triangle inequalities in $M$ are strict and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is simplicial. We also focus on the metric spaces minimizing $\mathcal P(M)$, and in the Mahler's conjecture for this class of convex bodies.

Do Minkowski averages get progressively more convex?

Let us define, for a compact set $A \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, the Minkowski averages of $A$: $$ A(k) = \left\{\frac{a_1+\cdots +a_k}{k} : a_1, \ldots, a_k\in A\right\}=\frac{1}{k}\Big(\underset{k\ {\rm times}}{\underbrace{A + \cdots + A}}\Big). $$ We study the monotonicity of the convergence of $A(k)$ towards the convex hull of $A$, when considering the Hausdorff distance, the volume deficit and a non-convexity index of Schneider as measures of convergence. For the volume deficit, we show that monotonicity fails in general, thus disproving a conjecture of Bobkov, Madiman and Wang. For Schneider's non-convexity index, we prove that a strong form of monotonicity holds, and for the Hausdorff distance, we establish that the sequence is eventually nonincreasing.

On the analogue of the concavity of entropy power in the Brunn-Minkowski theory

Elaborating on the similarity between the entropy power inequality and the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, Costa and Cover conjectured in {\it On the similarity of the entropy power inequality and the Brunn-Minkowski inequality} (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 30 (1984), no. 6, 837-839) the $\frac{1}{n}$-concavity of the outer parallel volume of measurable sets as an analogue of the concavity of entropy power. We investigate this conjecture and study its relationship with geometric inequalities.

Volume of the polar of random sets and shadow systems

We obtain optimal inequalities for the volume of the polar of random sets, generated for instance by the convex hull of independent random vectors in Euclidean space. Extremizers are given by random vectors uniformly distributed in Euclidean balls. This provides a random extension of the Blaschke-Santalo inequality which, in turn, can be derived by the law of large numbers. The method involves generalized shadow systems, their connection to Busemann type inequalities, and how they interact with functional rearrangement inequalities.
