Volume Product

Our purpose here is to give an overview of known results and open questions concerning the volume product ${\mathcal P}(K)=\min_{z\in K}{\rm vol}(K){\rm vol}((K-z)^*)$ of a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We present a number of upper and lower bounds for ${\mathcal P}(K)$, in particular, we discuss the Mahler's conjecture on the lower bound of ${\mathcal P}(K)$, which is still open. We also show connections of ${\mathcal P}(K)$ with different parts of modern mathematics, including Geometric Number Theory, Convex Geometry, Analysis, Harmonic Analysis as well as Systolic and Symplectic Geometries and Probability.

Sumset estimates in convex geometry

Sumset estimates, which provide bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of finite sets in a group, form an essential part of the toolkit of additive combinatorics. In recent years, probabilistic or entropic analogs of many of these inequalities were introduced. We study analogues of these sumset estimates in the context of convex geometry and Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb R}^n$. First, we observe that, with respect to Minkowski summation, volume is supermodular to arbitrary order on the space of convex bodies. Second, we explore sharp constants in the convex geometry analogues of variants of the Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities. In the last section of the paper, we provide connections of these inequalities to the classical Rogers-Shephard inequality.

Equipartitions and Mahler volumes of symmetric convex bodies

Following ideas of Iriyeh and Shibata we give a short proof of the three-dimensional Mahler conjecture {\mf for symmetric convex bodies}. Our contributions include, in particular, simple self-contained proofs of their two key statements. The first of these is an equipartition (ham sandwich type) theorem which refines a celebrated result of Hadwiger and, as usual, can be proved using ideas from equivariant topology. The second is an inequality relating the product volume to areas of certain sections and their duals. We observe that these ideas give a large family of convex sets in every dimension for which the Mahler conjecture holds true. Finally we give an alternative proof of the characterization of convex bodies that achieve the equality case and establish a {\mf new} stability result.

Inequalities for the Radon transform on convex sets

Several years ago the authors started looking at some problems of convex geometry from a more general point of view, replacing volume by an arbitrary measure. This approach led to new general properties of the Radon transform on convex bodies including an extension of the Busemann-Petty problem and a slicing inequality for arbitrary functions. The latter means that the sup-norm of the Radon transform of any probability density on a convex body of volume one is bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on the dimension. In this note, we prove an inequality that serves as an umbrella for these results

Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator

Geometric and functional Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for the lattice point enumerator $\mathrm{G}_n(\cdot)$ are provided. In particular, we show that $$\mathrm{G}_n((1-λ)K + λL + (-1,1)^n)^{1/n}\geq (1-λ)\mathrm{G}_n(K)^{1/n}+λ\mathrm{G}_n(L)^{1/n}$$ for any non-empty bounded sets $K, L\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and all $λ\in(0,1)$. We also show that these new discrete versions imply the classical results, and discuss some links with other related inequalities.

Geometry and volume product of finite dimensional Lipschitz-free spaces

The goal of this paper is to study geometric and extremal properties of the convex body $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$, which is the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free Banach space associated with a finite metric space $M$. We investigate $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-sums, in particular we characterize the metric spaces such that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Hanner polytope. We also characterize the finite metric spaces whose Lipschitz-free spaces are isometric. We discuss the extreme properties of the volume product $\mathcal{P}(M)=|B_{\mathcal F(M)}|\cdot|B_{\mathcal F(M)}^\circ|$, when the number of elements of $M$ is fixed. We show that if $\mathcal P(M)$ is maximal among all the metric spaces with the same number of points, then all triangle inequalities in $M$ are strict and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is simplicial. We also focus on the metric spaces minimizing $\mathcal P(M)$, and in the Mahler's conjecture for this class of convex bodies.

Do Minkowski averages get progressively more convex?

Let us define, for a compact set $A \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, the Minkowski averages of $A$: $$ A(k) = \left\{\frac{a_1+\cdots +a_k}{k} : a_1, \ldots, a_k\in A\right\}=\frac{1}{k}\Big(\underset{k\ {\rm times}}{\underbrace{A + \cdots + A}}\Big). $$ We study the monotonicity of the convergence of $A(k)$ towards the convex hull of $A$, when considering the Hausdorff distance, the volume deficit and a non-convexity index of Schneider as measures of convergence. For the volume deficit, we show that monotonicity fails in general, thus disproving a conjecture of Bobkov, Madiman and Wang. For Schneider's non-convexity index, we prove that a strong form of monotonicity holds, and for the Hausdorff distance, we establish that the sequence is eventually nonincreasing.

A discrete version of Koldobsky's slicing inequality

Let $\# K$ be a number of integer lattice points contained in a set $K$. In this paper we prove that for each $d\in {\mathbb N}$ there exists a constant $C(d)$ depending on $d$ only, such that for any origin-symmetric convex body $K \subset {\mathbb R}^d$ containing $d$ linearly independent lattice points $$ \# K \leq C(d)\max(\# (K\cap H))\, {\rm vol}_d(K)^{\frac{d-m}{d}}, $$ where the maximum is taken over all $m$-dimensional subspaces of ${\mathbb R}^d$. We also prove that $C(d)$ can be chosen asymptotically of order $O(1)^{d}d^{d-m}$. In addition, we show that if $K$ is an unconditional convex body then $C(d)$ can be chosen asymptotically of order $O(d)^{d-m}$.

Iterations of the projection body operator and a remark on Petty's conjectured projection inequality

We prove that if a convex body has absolutely continuous surface area measure, whose density is sufficiently close to the constant, then the sequence $\{Π^mK\}$ of convex bodies converges to the ball with respect to the Banach-Mazur distance, as $m\rightarrow\infty$. Here, $Π$ denotes the projection body operator. Our result allows us to show that the ellipsoid is a local solution to the conjectured inequality of Petty and to improve a related inequality of Lutwak.

On the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for general measures with applications to new isoperimetric-type inequalities

In this paper we present new versions of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for different classes of measures and sets. We show that the inequality \[ μ(λA + (1-λ)B)^{1/n} \geq λμ(A)^{1/n} + (1-λ)μ(B)^{1/n} \] holds true for an unconditional product measure $μ$ with decreasing density and a pair of unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that the above inequality is true for any unconditional $\log$-concave measure $μ$ and unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we prove that the inequality is true for a symmetric $\log$-concave measure $μ$ and a pair of symmetric convex sets $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^2$, which, in particular, settles two-dimensional case of the conjecture for Gaussian measure proposed by R. Gardner and the fourth named author. In addition, we deduce the $1/n$-concavity of the parallel volume $t \mapsto μ(A+tB)$, Brunn's type theorem and certain analogues of Minkowski first inequality.

An isomorphic version of the Busemann-Petty problem for arbitrary measures

We prove the following theorem. Let $μ$ be a measure on $R^n$ with even continuous density, and let $K,L$ be origin-symmetric convex bodies in $R^n$ so that $μ(K\cap H)\le μ(L\cap H)$ for any central hyperplane H. Then $μ(K)\le \sqrt{n} μ(L).$ We also prove this result with better constants for some special classes of measures and bodies. Finally, we prove a version of the hyperplane inequality for convex measures.

Stability of the reverse Blaschke-Santalo inequality for unconditional convex bodies

Mahler's conjecture asks whether the cube is a minimizer for the volume product of a body and its polar in the class of symmetric convex bodies in R^n. The corresponding inequality to the conjecture is sometimes called the the reverse Blaschke-Santalo inequality. The conjecture is known in dimension two and in several special cases. In the class of unconditional convex bodies, Saint Raymond confirmed the conjecture, and Meyer and Reisner, independently, characterized the equality case. In this paper we present a stability version of these results and also show that any symmetric convex body, which is sufficiently close to an unconditional body, satisfies the the reverse Blaschke-Santalo inequality.

A problem of Klee on inner section functions of convex bodies

In 1969, Vic Klee asked whether a convex body is uniquely determined (up to translation and reflection in the origin) by its inner section function, the function giving for each direction the maximal area of sections of the body by hyperplanes orthogonal to that direction. We answer this question in the negative by constructing two infinitely smooth convex bodies of revolution about the $x_n$-axis in $\R^n$, $n\ge 3$, one origin symmetric and the other not centrally symmetric, with the same inner section function. Moreover, the pair of bodies can be arbitrarily close to the unit ball.

The geometry of p-convex intersection bodies

Busemann's theorem states that the intersection body of an origin-symmetric convex body is also convex. In this paper we provide a version of Busemann's theorem for p-convex bodies. We show that the intersection body of a p-convex body is q-convex for certain q. Furthermore, we discuss the sharpness of the previous result by constructing an appropriate example. This example is also used to show that IK, the intersection body of K, can be much farther away from the Euclidean ball than K. Finally, we extend these theorems to some general measure spaces with log-concave and $s$-concave measures
