2-vector bundles

We develop a ready-to-use comprehensive theory for (super) 2-vector bundles over smooth manifolds. It is based on the bicategory of (super) algebras, bimodules, and intertwiners as a model for 2-vector spaces. We discuss symmetric monoidal structures and the corresponding notions of dualizability, and we derive a classification in terms of Cech cohomology with values in a crossed module. One important feature of our 2-vector bundles is that they contain bundle gerbes as well as ordinary algebra bundles as full sub-bicategories, and hence provide a unifying framework for these so far distinct objects. We provide several examples of isomorphisms between bundle gerbes and algebra bundles, coming from representation theory, twisted K-theory, and spin geometry.

The insidious bicategory of algebra bundles

In this paper we construct a bicategory of (super) algebra bundles over a smooth manifold, where the 1-morphisms are bundles of bimodules. The main point is that naive definitions of bimodule bundles will not lead to a well-defined composition law in such a bicategory, at least not if non-invertible bimodules and non-semisimple algebras are desired. This problem has not been addressed so far in the literature. We develop a complete solution, and also address symmetric monoidal structures as well as the corresponding questions of dualizability.

A Rigorous Construction of the Supersymmetric Path Integral Associated to a Compact Spin Manifold

We give a rigorous construction of the path integral in N=1/2 supersymmetry as an integral map for differential forms on the loop space of a compact spin manifold. It is defined on the space of differential forms which can be represented by extended iterated integrals in the sense of Chen and Getzler-Jones-Petrack. Via the iterated integral map, we compare our path integral to the non-commutative loop space Chern character of Güneysu and the second author. Our theory provides a rigorous background to various formal proofs of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem using supersymmetric path integrals, as investigated by Alvarez-Gaumé, Atiyah, Bismut and Witten.

Good Wannier bases in Hilbert modules associated to topological insulators

For a large class of physically relevant operators on a manifold with discrete group action, we prove general results on the (non-)existence of a basis of smooth well-localised Wannier functions for their spectral subspaces. This turns out to be equivalent to the freeness of a certain Hilbert module over the group C∗C^*-algebra canonically associated to the spectral subspace. This brings into play KK-theoretic methods and justifies their importance as invariants of topological insulators in physics.

Heat Kernel Asymptotics, Path Integrals and Infinite-Dimensional Determinants

We investigate the short-time expansion of the heat kernel of a Laplace type operator on a compact Riemannian manifold and show that the lowest order term of this expansion is given by the Fredholm determinant of the Hessian of the energy functional on a space of finite energy paths. This is the asymptotic behavior to be expected from formally expressing the heat kernel as a path integral and then (again formally) using Laplace's method on the integral. We also relate this to the zeta determinant of the Jacobi operator, which is another way to assign a determinant to the Hessian of the energy functional. We consider both the near-diagonal asymptotics as well as the behavior at the cut locus.

Strong Short Time Asymptotics and Convolution Approximation of the Heat Kernel

We give a short proof of a strong version of the short time asymptotic expansion of heat kernels associated to Laplace type operators acting on sections of vector bundles over compact Riemannian manifolds, including exponential decay of the difference of the approximate heat kernel and the true heat kernel. We use this to show that repeated convolution of the approximate heat kernels can be used to approximate the heat kernel on all of MM, which is related to expressing the heat kernel as a path integral. This scheme is then applied to obtain a short-time asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel at the cut locus.

Asymptotic eigenfunctions for Schrödinger operators on a vector bundle

In the limit ℏ→0\hbar\to 0, we analyze a class of Schrödinger operators Hℏ=ℏ2L+ℏW+V⋅idH_\hbar = \hbar^2 L + \hbar W + V\cdot \mathrm{id} acting on sections of a vector bundle Eh\mathcal{Eh} over a Riemannian manifold MM where LL is a Laplace type operator, WW is an endomorphism field and the potential energy VV has a non-degenerate minimum at some point p∈Mp\in M. We construct quasimodes of WKB-type near pp for eigenfunctions associated with the low lying eigenvalues of HℏH_\hbar. These are obtained from eigenfunctions of the associated harmonic oscillator Hp,ℏH_{p, \hbar} at pp, acting on smooth functions on the tangent space.

Asymptotic Expansions and Conformal Covariance of the Mass of Conformal Differential Operators

We give an explicit description of the full asymptotic expansion of the Schwartz kernel of the complex powers of mm-Laplace type operators LL on compact Riemannian manifolds in terms of Riesz distributions. The constant term in this asymptotic expansion turns turns out to be given by the local zeta function of LL. In particular, the constant term in the asymptotic expansion of the Green's function L−1L^{-1} is often called the mass of LL, which (in case that LL is the Yamabe operator) is an important invariant, namely a positive multiple of the ADM mass of a certain asymptotically flat manifold constructed out of the given data. We show that for general conformally invariant mm-Laplace operators LL (including the GJMS operators), this mass is a conformal invariant in the case that the dimension of MM is odd and that ker⁡L=0\ker L = 0, and we give a precise description of the failure of the conformal invariance in the case that these conditions are not satisfied.

Path Integrals on Manifolds with Boundary

We give time-slicing path integral formulas for solutions to the heat equation corresponding to a self-adjoint Laplace type operator acting on sections of a vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. More specifically, we show that such a solution can be approximated by integrals over finite-dimensional path spaces of piecewise geodesics subordinated to increasingly fine partitions of the time interval. We consider a subclass of mixed boundary conditions which includes standard Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.

The Trace and the Mass of subcritical GJMS Operators

Let LgL_g be the subcritical GJMS operator on an even-dimensional compact manifold (X,g)(X, g) and consider the zeta-regularized trace Trζ(Lg−1)\mathrm{Tr}_ζ(L_g^{-1}) of its inverse. We show that if ker⁡Lg=0\ker L_g = 0, then the supremum of this quantity, taken over all metrics gg of fixed volume in the conformal class, is always greater than or equal to the corresponding quantity on the standard sphere. Moreover, we show that in the case that it is strictly larger, the supremum is attained by a metric of constant mass. Using positive mass theorems, we give some geometric conditions for this to happen.

Vector Fields with a non-degenerate Source

We discuss the solution theory of operators of the form ∇X+A\nabla_X + A, acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle with connection ∇\nabla over a manifold MM, where XX is a vector field having a critical point with positive linearization at some point p∈Mp \in M. As an operator on a suitable space of smooth sections $Γ^\infty(U, \V)$, it fulfills a Fredholm alternative, and the same is true for the adjoint operator. Furthermore, we show that the solutions depend smoothly on the data ∇\nabla, XX and AA.
