2-vector bundles

We develop a ready-to-use comprehensive theory for (super) 2-vector bundles over smooth manifolds. It is based on the bicategory of (super) algebras, bimodules, and intertwiners as a model for 2-vector spaces. We discuss symmetric monoidal structures and the corresponding notions of dualizability, and we derive a classification in terms of Cech cohomology with values in a crossed module. One important feature of our 2-vector bundles is that they contain bundle gerbes as well as ordinary algebra bundles as full sub-bicategories, and hence provide a unifying framework for these so far distinct objects. We provide several examples of isomorphisms between bundle gerbes and algebra bundles, coming from representation theory, twisted K-theory, and spin geometry.

The insidious bicategory of algebra bundles

In this paper we construct a bicategory of (super) algebra bundles over a smooth manifold, where the 1-morphisms are bundles of bimodules. The main point is that naive definitions of bimodule bundles will not lead to a well-defined composition law in such a bicategory, at least not if non-invertible bimodules and non-semisimple algebras are desired. This problem has not been addressed so far in the literature. We develop a complete solution, and also address symmetric monoidal structures as well as the corresponding questions of dualizability.

Observation of multi-skyrmion objects created by size and density control in Ta/CoFeB/MgO films

Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with a nontrivial topology that offer a potential for future magnetic memory and storage devices. The controlled formation and adjustment of size and density of magnetic skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers is demonstrated. It is the ideal candidate for the use as a bottom electrode integration into CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions. Varying the CoFeB thickness close to the out-of-plane to in-plane magnetic phase transition, we find that subtle energy contributions enable the skyrmion formation in a narrow thickness window, corresponding to only around 10 pm variation in CoFeB thickness. Using magneto-optical imaging with quantitative image processing, variations in skyrmion diameter and distribution below the Abbe limit can be analyzed. We demonstrate a high degree of diameter and density control. Zero-field stable skyrmions can be set with proper magnetic field initialization. This demonstrated tunability and degree of comprehension of skyrmion formation, paves the way for future skyrmion based magnetic memory. Moreover, we demonstrate a controlled merging of individual skyrmions to complex topological objects. We compare our results with the baby-Skyrme model, developed to describe the soliton nature, for any topological charge n, and demonstrate the ability to form multi-skyrmion objects. These objects will be interesting for fundamental mathematical studies of the topological behavior of solitons in the future.

Higher geometry for non-geometric T-duals

We investigate topological T-duality in the framework of non-abelian gerbes and higher gauge groups. We show that this framework admits the gluing of locally defined T-duals, in situations where no globally defined ("geometric") T-duals exists. The gluing results into new, higher-geometrical objects that can be used to study non-geometric T-duals, alternatively to other approaches like non-commutative geometry.

A Loop Space Formulation for Geometric Lifting Problems

We review and then combine two aspects of the theory of bundle gerbes. The first concerns lifting bundle gerbes and connections on those, developed by Murray and Gomi. Lifting gerbes represent obstructions against extending the structure group of a principal bundle. The second is the transgression of gerbes to loop spaces, initiated by Brylinski and McLaughlin and with recent contributions of the author. Combining these two aspects, we obtain a new formulation of lifting problems in terms of geometry on the loop space. Most prominently, our formulation explains the relation between (complex) spin structures on a Riemannian manifold and orientations of its loop space.

String geometry vs. spin geometry on loop spaces

We introduce various versions of spin structures on free loop spaces of smooth manifolds, based on a classical notion due to Killingback, and additionally coupled to two relations between loops: thin homotopies and loop fusion. The central result of this article is an equivalence between these enhanced versions of spin structures on the loop space and string structures on the manifold itself. The equivalence exists in two settings: in a purely topological one and a in geometrical one that includes spin connections and string connections. Our results provide a consistent, functorial, one-to-one dictionary between string geometry and spin geometry on loop spaces.

Parallel Transport and Functors

Parallel transport of a connection in a smooth fibre bundle yields a functor from the path groupoid of the base manifold into a category that describes the fibres of the bundle. We characterize functors obtained like this by two notions we introduce: local trivializations and smooth descent data. This provides a way to substitute categories of functors for categories of smooth fibre bundles with connection. We indicate that this concept can be generalized to connections in categorified bundles, and how this generalization improves the understanding of higher dimensional parallel transport.

Connections on non-abelian Gerbes and their Holonomy

We introduce an axiomatic framework for the parallel transport of connections on gerbes. It incorporates parallel transport along curves and along surfaces, and is formulated in terms of gluing axioms and smoothness conditions. The smoothness conditions are imposed with respect to a strict Lie 2-group, which plays the role of a band, or structure 2-group. Upon choosing certain examples of Lie 2-groups, our axiomatic framework reproduces in a systematical way several known concepts of gerbes with connection: non-abelian differential cocycles, Breen-Messing gerbes, abelian and non-abelian bundle gerbes. These relationships convey a well-defined notion of surface holonomy from our axiomatic framework to each of these concrete models. Till now, holonomy was only known for abelian gerbes; our approach reproduces that known concept and extends it to non-abelian gerbes. Several new features of surface holonomy are exposed under its extension to non-abelian gerbes; for example, it carries an action of the mapping class group of the surface.

Lifting Problems and Transgression for Non-Abelian Gerbes

We discuss various lifting and reduction problems for bundles and gerbes in the context of a strict Lie 2-group. We obtain a geometrical formulation (and a new proof) for the exactness of Breen's long exact sequence in non-abelian cohomology. We use our geometrical formulation in order to define a transgression map in non-abelian cohomology. This transgression map relates the degree one non-abelian cohomology of a smooth manifold (represented by non-abelian gerbes) with the degree zero non-abelian cohomology of the free loop space (represented by principal bundles). We prove several properties for this transgression map. For instance, it reduces - in case of a Lie 2-group with a single object - to the ordinary transgression in ordinary cohomology. We describe applications of our results to string manifolds: first, we obtain a new comparison theorem for different notions of string structures. Second, our transgression map establishes a direct relation between string structures and spin structure on the loop space.

Spin structures on loop spaces that characterize string manifolds

Classically, a spin structure on the loop space of a manifold is a lift of the structure group of the looped frame bundle from the loop group to its universal central extension. Heuristically, the loop space of a manifold is spin if and only if the manifold itself is a string manifold, against which it is well-known that only the if-part is true in general. In this article we develop a new version of spin structures on loop spaces that exists if and only if the manifold is string, as desired. This new version consists of a classical spin structure plus a certain fusion product related to loops of frames in the manifold. We use the lifting gerbe theory of Carey-Murray, recent results of Stolz-Teichner on loop spaces, and some own results about string geometry and Brylinski-McLaughlin transgression.

Transgression to Loop Spaces and its Inverse, I: Diffeological Bundles and Fusion Maps

We prove that isomorphism classes of principal bundles over a diffeological space are in bijection to certain maps on its free loop space, both in a setup with and without connections on the bundles. The maps on the loop space are smooth and satisfy a "fusion" property with respect to triples of paths. Our bijections are established by explicit group isomorphisms: transgression and regression. Restricted to smooth, finite-dimensional manifolds, our results extend previous work of J. W. Barrett.

Transgression to Loop Spaces and its Inverse, II: Gerbes and Fusion Bundles with Connection

We prove that the category of abelian gerbes with connection over a smooth manifold is equivalent to a certain category of principal bundles over the free loop space. These bundles are equipped with a connection and with a "fusion" product with respect to triples of paths. The equivalence is established by explicit functors in both directions: transgression and regression. We describe applications to geometric lifting problems and loop group extensions.

A Construction of String 2-Group Models using a Transgression-Regression Technique

In this note we present a new construction of the string group that ends optionally in two different contexts: strict diffeological 2-groups or finite-dimensional Lie 2-groups. It is canonical in the sense that no choices are involved; all the data is written down and can be looked up (at least somewhere). The basis of our construction is the basic gerbe of Gawedzki-Reis and Meinrenken. The main new insight is that under a transgression-regression procedure, the basic gerbe picks up a multiplicative structure coming from the Mickelsson product over the loop group. The conclusion of the construction is a relation between multiplicative gerbes and 2-group extensions for which we use recent work of Schommer-Pries.

The gauging of two-dimensional bosonic sigma models on world-sheets with defects

We extend our analysis of the gauging of rigid symmetries in bosonic two-dimensional sigma models with Wess-Zumino terms in the action to the case of world-sheets with defects. A structure that permits a non-anomalous coupling of such sigma models to world-sheet gauge fields of arbitrary topology is analysed, together with obstructions to its existence, and the classification of its inequivalent choices.

Transgression to Loop Spaces and its Inverse, III: Gerbes and Thin Fusion Bundles

We show that the category of abelian gerbes over a smooth manifold is equivalent to a certain category of principal bundles over the free loop space. These principal bundles are equipped with fusion products and are equivariant with respect to thin homotopies between loops. The equivalence is established by a functor called regression, and complements a similar equivalence for bundles and gerbes equipped with connections, derived previously in Part II of this series of papers. The two equivalences provide a complete loop space formulation of the geometry of gerbes; functorial, monoidal, natural in the base manifold, and consistent with passing from the setting "with connections" to the one "without connections". We discuss an application to lifting problems, which provides in particular loop space formulations of spin structures, complex spin structures, and spin connections.

Smooth Functors vs. Differential Forms

We establish a relation between smooth 2-functors defined on the path 2-groupoid of a smooth manifold and differential forms on this manifold. This relation can be understood as a part of a dictionary between fundamental notions from category theory and differential geometry. We show that smooth 2-functors appear in several fields, namely as connections on (non-abelian) gerbes, as curvatures of smooth functors and as critical points in BF theory. We demonstrate further that our dictionary provides a powerful tool to discuss the transgression of geometric objects to loop spaces.

Global gauge anomalies in two-dimensional bosonic sigma models

We revisit the gauging of rigid symmetries in two-dimensional bosonic sigma models with a Wess-Zumino term in the action. Such a term is related to a background closed 3-form H on the target space. More exactly, the sigma-model Feynman amplitudes of classical fields are associated to a bundle gerbe with connection of curvature H over the target space. Under conditions that were unraveled more than twenty years ago, the classical amplitudes may be coupled to the topologically trivial gauge fields of the symmetry group in a way which assures infinitesimal gauge invariance. We show that the resulting gauged Wess-Zumino amplitudes may, nevertheless, exhibit global gauge anomalies that we fully classify. The general results are illustrated on the example of the WZW and the coset models of conformal field theory. The latter are shown to be inconsistent in the presence of global anomalies. We introduce a notion of equivariant gerbes that allow an anomaly-free coupling of the Wess-Zumino amplitudes to all gauge fields, including the ones in non-trivial principal bundles. The obstructions to the existence of equivariant gerbes and their classification are discussed. The choice of different equivariant structures on the same bundle gerbe gives rise to a new type of discrete-torsion ambiguities in the gauged amplitudes. An explicit construction of gerbes equivariant with respect to the adjoint symmetries over compact simply connected simple Lie groups is given.

Multiplicative Bundle Gerbes with Connection

Multiplicative bundle gerbes are gerbes over a Lie group which are compatible with the group structure. In this article connections on such bundle gerbes are introduced and studied. It is shown that multiplicative bundle gerbes with connection furnish geometrical constructions of the following objects: smooth central extensions of loop groups, Chern-Simons actions for arbitrary gauge groups, and symmetric bi-branes for WZW models with topological defect lines.

Bundle Gerbes for Orientifold Sigma Models

Bundle gerbes with connection and their modules play an important role in the theory of two-dimensional sigma models with a background Wess-Zumino flux: their holonomy determines the contribution of the flux to the Feynman amplitudes of classical fields. We discuss additional structures on bundle gerbes and gerbe modules needed in similar constructions for orientifold sigma models describing closed and open strings.

Unoriented WZW Models and Holonomy of Bundle Gerbes

The Wess-Zumino term in two-dimensional conformal field theory is best understood as a surface holonomy of a bundle gerbe. We define additional structure for a bundle gerbe that allows to extend the notion of surface holonomy to unoriented surfaces. This provides a candidate for the Wess-Zumino term for WZW models on unoriented surfaces. Our ansatz reproduces some results known from the algebraic approach to WZW models.
