A fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow of immersed plane curves with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider a fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow for an immersed plane curve with fixed boundary, using an elastica-type functional depending on a small positive parameter $\varepsilon$. We show that the approximating flow smoothly converges, as $\varepsilon \to 0^+$, to the curvature flow of the curve with Dirichlet boundary conditions for all times before the first singularity of the limit flow.

Non-local planelike minimizers and $Γ$-convergence of periodic energies to a local anisotropic perimeter

We investigate a homogenization problem related to a non-local interface energy with a periodic forcing term. We show the existence of planelike minimizers for such energy. Moreover, we prove that, under suitable assumptions on the non-local kernel and the external field, the sequence of rescaled energies $Γ$-converges to a suitable local anisotropic perimeter, where the anisotropy is defined as the limit of the normalized energy of a planelike minimizer in larger and larger cubes (i.e., what is called in jargon "stable norm"). To obtain this, we also establish several auxiliary results, including: the minimality of the level sets of the minimizers, explicit bounds on the oscillations of the minimizers, density estimates for almost minimizers, and non-local perimeter estimates in the large.

Local Hölder regularity of minimizers for nonlocal variational problems

We study the regularity of solutions to a nonlocal variational problem, which is related to the image denoising model, and we show that, in two dimensions, minimizers have the same Hölder regularity as the original image. More precisely, if the datum is (locally) $β$-Hölder continuous for some $β\in (1-s,\,1]$, where $s \in (0,1)$ is a parameter related to the nonlocal operator, we prove that the solution is also $β$-Hölder continuous.

Rigidity of the ball for an isoperimetric problem with strong capacitary repulsion

We consider a variational problem involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. We show that, as opposed to the case of weak (short-range) interactions where we proved ill-posedness of the problem in a previous paper, when the repulsion is stronger the perimeter dominates the capacitary term at small scales. In particular we prove existence of minimizers for small charges as well as their regularity. Combining this with the stability of the ball under small $C^{1,γ}$ perturbations, this ultimately leads to the minimality of the ball for small charges. We cover in particular the borderline case of the $1-$capacity where both terms in the energy are of the same order.

Stability of the ball under volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow

We consider the volume constrained fractional mean curvature flow of a nearly spherical set, and prove long time existence and asymptotic convergence to a ball. The result applies in particular to convex initial data, under the assumption of global existence. Similarly, we show exponential convergence to a constant for the fractional mean curvature flow of a periodic graph.

Type-0 singularities in the network flow -- Evolution of trees

The motion by curvature of networks is the generalization to finite union of curves of the curve shortening flow. This evolution has several peculiar features, mainly due to the presence of junctions where the curves meet. In this paper we show that whenever the length of one single curve vanishes and two triple junctions coalesce, then the curvature of the evolving networks remains bounded. This topological singularity is exclusive of the network flow and it can be referred as a Type-0 singularity, in contrast to the well known Type-I and Type-II ones of the usual mean curvature flow of smooth curves or hypersurfaces, characterized by the different rates of blow up of the curvature. As a consequence, we are able to give a complete description of the evolution of tree-like networks till the first singular time, under the assumption that all the tangents flows have unit multiplicity. If the lifespan of such solutions is finite, then the curvature of the network remains bounded and we can apply the results by Ilmanen-Neves-Schulze/Lira-Mazzeo-Pluda-Saez to restart the flow after the singularity.

Conducting flat drops in a confining potential

We study a geometric variational problem arising from modeling two-dimensional charged drops of a perfectly conducting liquid in the presence of an external potential. We characterize the semicontinuous envelope of the energy in terms of a parameter measuring the relative strength of the Coulomb interaction. As a consequence, when the potential is confining and the Coulomb repulsion strength is below a critical value, we show existence and partial regularity of volume-constrained minimizers. We also derive the Euler--Lagrange equation satisfied by regular critical points, expressing the first variation of the Coulombic energy in terms of the normal $\frac12$-derivative of the capacitary potential.

Connected perimeter of planar sets

We introduce a notion of connected perimeter for planar sets defined as the lower semi-continuous envelope of perimeters of approximating sets which are measure-theoretically connected. A companion notion of simply connected perimeter is also studied. We prove a representation formula which links the connected perimeter, the classical perimeter, and the length of suitable Steiner trees. We also discuss the application of this notion to the existence of solutions to a nonlocal minimization problem.

Nonlocal minimal clusters in the plane

We prove existence of partitions of an open set $Ω$ with a given number of phases, which minimize the sum of the fractional perimeters of all the phases, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In two dimensions we show that, if the fractional parameter $s$ is sufficiently close to $1$, the only singular minimal cone, that is, the only minimal partition invariant by dilations and with a singular point, is given by three half-lines meeting at $120$ degrees. In the case of a weighted sum of fractional perimeters, we show that there exists a unique minimal cone with three phases.

Stability results for nonlocal geometric evolutions and limit cases for fractional mean curvature flows

We introduce a notion of uniform convergence for local and nonlocal curvatures. Then, we propose an abstract method to prove the convergence of the corresponding geometric flows, within the level set formulation. We apply such a general theory to characterize the limits of $s$-fractional mean curvature flows as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$. In analogy with the $s$-fractional mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $s$-Riesz curvature flows and characterize its limit as $s\to 0^-$. Eventually, we discuss the limit behavior as $r\to 0^+$ of the flow generated by a regularization of the $r$-Minkowski content.

The $0$-fractional perimeter between fractional perimeters and Riesz potentials

This paper provides a unified point of view on fractional perimeters and Riesz potentials. Denoting by $H^σ$ - for $σ\in (0,1)$ - the $σ$-fractional perimeter and by $J^σ$ - for $σ\in (-d,0)$ - the $σ$-Riesz energies acting on characteristic functions, we prove that both functionals can be seen as limits of renormalized self-attractive energies as well as limits of repulsive interactions between a set and its complement. We also show that the functionals $H^σ$ and $J^σ$\,, up to a suitable additive renormalization diverging when $σ\to 0$, belong to a continuous one-parameter family of functionals, which for $σ=0$ gives back a new object we refer to as {\it $0$-fractional perimeter}. All the convergence results with respect to the parameter $σ$ and to the renormalization procedures are obtained in the framework of $Γ$-convergence. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain the isoperimetric inequality for the $0$-fractional perimeter.

Homogenization of a semilinear heat equation

We consider the homogenization of a semilinear heat equation with vanishing viscosity and with oscillating positive potential depending on $u/\varepsilon$. According to the rate between the frequency of oscillations in the potential and the vanishing factor in the viscosity, we obtain different regimes in the limit evolution and we discuss the locally uniform convergence of the solutions to the effective problem. The interesting feature of the model is that in the strong diffusion regime the effective operator is discontinuous in the gradient entry. We get a complete characterization of the limit solution in dimension $n=1$, whereas in dimension $n>1$ we discuss the main properties of the solutions to the effective problem selected at the limit and we prove uniqueness for some classes of initial data.

On well-posedness of variational models of charged drops

Electrified liquids are well known to be prone to a variety of interfacial instabilities that result in the onset of apparent interfacial singularities and liquid fragmentation. In the case of electrically conducting liquids, one of the basic models describing the equilibrium interfacial configurations and the onset of instability assumes the liquid to be equipotential and interprets those configurations as local minimizers of the energy consisting of the sum of the surface energy and the electrostatic energy. Here we show that, surprisingly, this classical geometric variational model is mathematically ill-posed irrespectively of the degree to which the liquid is electrified. Specifically, we demonstrate that an isolated spherical droplet is never a local minimizer, no matter how small is the total charge on the droplet, since the energy can always be lowered by a smooth, arbitrarily small distortion of the droplet's surface. This is in sharp contrast with the experimental observations that a critical amount of charge is needed in order to destabilize a spherical droplet. We discuss several possible regularization mechanisms for the considered free boundary problem and argue that well-posedness can be restored by the inclusion of the entropic effects resulting in finite screening of free charges.

Volume constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with a potential energy

We consider volume-constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with the addition of a potential energy in the form of a volume inte- gral. Such minimizers are solutions of the prescribed fractional curvature problem. We prove existence and regularity of minimizers under suitable assumptions on the potential energy, which cover the periodic case. In the small volume regime we show that minimizers are close to balls, with a quantitative estimate.

Ground states of a two phase model with cross and self attractive interactions

We consider a variational model for two interacting species (or phases), subject to cross and self attractive forces. We show existence and several qualitative properties of minimizers. Depending on the strengths of the forces, different behaviors are possible: phase mixing or phase separation with nested or disjoint phases. In the case of Coulomb interaction forces, we characterize the ground state configurations.

Low density phases in a uniformly charged liquid

This paper is concerned with the macroscopic behavior of global energy minimizers in the three-dimensional sharp interface unscreened Ohta-Kawasaki model of diblock copolymer melts. This model is also referred to as the nuclear liquid drop model in the studies of the structure of highly compressed nuclear matter found in the crust of neutron stars, and, more broadly, is a paradigm for energy-driven pattern forming systems in which spatial order arises as a result of the competition of short-range attractive and long-range repulsive forces. Here we investigate the large volume behavior of minimizers in the low volume fraction regime, in which one expects the formation of a periodic lattice of small droplets of the minority phase in a sea of the majority phase. Under periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the considered energy $Γ$-converges to an energy functional of the limit "homogenized" measure associated with the minority phase consisting of a local linear term and a non-local quadratic term mediated by the Coulomb kernel. As a consequence, asymptotically the mass of the minority phase in a minimizer spreads uniformly across the domain. Similarly, the energy spreads uniformly across the domain as well, with the limit energy density minimizing the energy of a single droplets per unit volume. Finally, we prove that in the macroscopic limit the connected components of the minimizers have volumes and diameters that are bounded above and below by universal constants, and that most of them converge to the minimizers of the energy divided by volume for the whole space problem.

Rigidity and sharp stability estimates for hypersurfaces with constant and almost-constant nonlocal mean curvature

We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.

Spines of minimal length

In this paper we raise the question whether every closed Riemannian manifold has a spine of minimal area, and we answer it affirmatively in the surface case. On constant curvature surfaces we introduce the spine systole, a continuous real function on moduli space that measures the minimal length of a spine in each surface. We show that the spine systole is a proper function and has its global minima precisely on the extremal surfaces (those containing the biggest possible discs). We also study minimal spines, which are critical points for the length functional. We completely classify minimal spines on flat tori, proving that the number of them is a proper function on moduli space. We also show that the number of minimal spines of uniformly bounded length is finite on hyperbolic surfaces.

Weighted TV minimization and applications to vortex density models

Motivated in part by models arising from mathematical descriptions of Bose-Einstein condensation, we consider total variation minimization problems in which the total variation is weighted by a function that may degenerate near the domain boundary, and the fidelity term contains a weight that may be both degenerate and singular. We develop a general theory for a class of such problems, with special attention to the examples arising from physical models.

preprint2014arXiv

Existence and stability for a non-local isoperimetric model of charged liquid drops

We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.

Motion by curvature of planar networks II

We prove that the curvature flow of an embedded planar network of three curves connected through a triple junction, with fixed endpoints on the boundary of a given strictly convex domain, exists smooth until the lengths of the three curves stay far from zero. If this is the case for all times, then the evolution exists for all times and the network converges to the Steiner minimal connection between the three endpoints.

Curve shortening-straightening flow for non-closed planar curves with infinite length

We consider a motion of non-closed planar curves with infinite length. The motion is governed by a steepest descent flow for the geometric functional which consists of the sum of the length functional and the total squared curvature. We call the flow shortening-straightening flow. In this paper, first we prove a long time existence result for the shortening-straightening flow for non-closed planar curves with infinite length. Then we show that the solution converges to a stationary solution as time goes to infinity. Moreover we give a classification of the stationary solution.

Existence and qualitative properties of isoperimetric sets in periodic media

We review and extend here some recent results on the existence of minimal surfaces and isoperimetric sets in non homogeneous and anisotropic periodic media. We also describe the qualitative properties of the homogenized surface tension, also known as stable norm (or minimal action) in Weak KAM theory. In particular we investigate its strict convexity and differentiability properties.

Existence and uniqueness for planar anisotropic and crystalline curvature flow

We prove short-time existence of ϕ-regular solutions to the planar anisotropic curvature flow, including the crystalline case, with an additional forcing term possibly unbounded and discontinuous in time, such as for instance a white noise. We also prove uniqueness of such solutions when the anisotropy is smooth and elliptic. The main tools are the use of an implicit variational scheme in order to define the evolution, and the approximation with flows corresponding to regular anisotropies.

Volume-constrained minimizers for the prescribed curvature problem in periodic media

We establish existence of compact minimizers of the prescribed mean curvature problem with volume constraint in periodic media. As a consequence, we construct compact approximate solutions to the prescribed mean curvature equation. We also show convergence after rescaling of the volume-constrained minimizers towards a suitable Wulff Shape, when the volume tends to infinity.

Convergence of the one-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation

We consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension with scaling a small parameter εand a non-convex potential W. In the limit \espilon \to 0, under the assumption that the initial data are energetically well-prepared, we show the convergence to a Stefan problem. The proof is based on variational methods and exploits the gradient flow structure of the Cahn-Hilliard equation.

Mean curvature flow with obstacles

We consider the evolution of fronts by mean curvature in the presence of obstacles. We construct a weak solution to the flow by means of a variational method, corresponding to an implicit time-discretization scheme. Assuming the regularity of the obstacles, in the two-dimensional case we show existence and uniqueness of a regular solution before the onset of singularities. Finally, we discuss an application of this result to the positive mean curvature flow.

On the regularity of timelike extremal surfaces

We study a class of timelike weakly extremal surfaces in flat Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{1+n}$, characterized by the fact that they admit a $C^1$ parametrization (in general not an immersion) of a specific form. We prove that if the distinguished parametrization is of class $C^k$, then the surface is regularly immersed away from a closed singular set of euclidean Hausdorff dimension at most $1+1/k$, and that this bound is sharp. We also show that, generically with respect to a natural topology, the singular set of a timelike weakly extremal cylinder in $\mathbb R^{1+n}$ is 1-dimensional if $n=2$, and it is empty if $n \ge 4$. For $n=3$, timelike weakly extremal surfaces exhibit an intermediate behavior.

Plane-like minimizers and differentiability of the stable norm

In this paper we investigate the strict convexity and the differentiability properties of the stable norm, which corresponds to the homogenized surface tension for a periodic perimeter homogenization problem (in a regular and uniformly elliptic case). We prove that it is always differentiable in totally irrational directions, while in other directions, it is differentiable if and only if the corresponding plane-like minimizers satisfying a strong Birkhoff property foliate the torus. We also discuss the issue of the uniqueness of the correctors for the corresponding homogenization problem.

Long-time behavior of the mean curvature flow with periodic forcing

We consider the long-time behavior of the mean curvature flow in heterogeneous media with periodic fibrations, modeled as an additive driving force. Under appropriate assumptions on the forcing term, we show existence of generalized traveling waves with maximal speed of propagation, and we prove the convergence of solutions to the forced mean curvature flow to these generalized waves.

Lorentzian varifolds and applications to closed relativistic strings

We develop a suitable generalization of Almgren's theory of varifolds in a lorentzian setting, focusing on area, first variation, rectifiability, compactness and closure issues. Motivated by the asymptotic behaviour of the scaled hyperbolic Ginzburg-Landau equations, and by the presence of singularities in lorentzian minimal surfaces, we introduce, within the varifold class, various notions of generalized minimal timelike submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in flat Minkowski spacetime, which are global in character and admit conserved quantities, such as relativistic energy and momentum. In particular, we show that stationary lorentzian 2-varifolds properly include the class of classical relativistic and subrelativistic strings. We also discuss several examples.

On the gradient flow of a one-homogeneous functional

We consider the gradient flow of a one-homogeneous functional, whose dual involves the derivative of a constrained scalar function. We show in this case that the gradient flow is related to a weak, generalized formulation of the Hele-Shaw flow. The equivalence follows from a variational representation, which is a variant of well-known variational representations for the Hele-Shaw problem. As a consequence we get existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to the Hele-Shaw flow. We also obtain an explicit representation for the Total Variation flow in one dimension and easily deduce basic qualitative properties, concerning in particular the "staircasing effect".

preprint2010arXiv

Curvature flow in heterogeneous media

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in geometric evolution in heterogeneous media. Here we consider curvature driven fows of planar curves, with an additional space-dependent forcing term. Motivated by a homogenization problem, we look for estimates which depend only on the uniform norm of the forcing term. By means of an asymptotic analysis, we discuss the properties of the limit solutions of the homogenization problem, which we can rigorously solve in some special cases: that is, when the initial curve is a graph, and the forcing term does not depend on the vertical direction. As a by-product, in such cases we are able to define a soluton of the geometric evolution when the forcing term is just a bounded, not necessarily continuous, function.
