Stability of the ball under volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow

We consider the volume constrained fractional mean curvature flow of a nearly spherical set, and prove long time existence and asymptotic convergence to a ball. The result applies in particular to convex initial data, under the assumption of global existence. Similarly, we show exponential convergence to a constant for the fractional mean curvature flow of a periodic graph.

Nonlocal minimal clusters in the plane

We prove existence of partitions of an open set $Ω$ with a given number of phases, which minimize the sum of the fractional perimeters of all the phases, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In two dimensions we show that, if the fractional parameter $s$ is sufficiently close to $1$, the only singular minimal cone, that is, the only minimal partition invariant by dilations and with a singular point, is given by three half-lines meeting at $120$ degrees. In the case of a weighted sum of fractional perimeters, we show that there exists a unique minimal cone with three phases.

Stability results for nonlocal geometric evolutions and limit cases for fractional mean curvature flows

We introduce a notion of uniform convergence for local and nonlocal curvatures. Then, we propose an abstract method to prove the convergence of the corresponding geometric flows, within the level set formulation. We apply such a general theory to characterize the limits of $s$-fractional mean curvature flows as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$. In analogy with the $s$-fractional mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $s$-Riesz curvature flows and characterize its limit as $s\to 0^-$. Eventually, we discuss the limit behavior as $r\to 0^+$ of the flow generated by a regularization of the $r$-Minkowski content.

Homogenization of a semilinear heat equation

We consider the homogenization of a semilinear heat equation with vanishing viscosity and with oscillating positive potential depending on $u/\varepsilon$. According to the rate between the frequency of oscillations in the potential and the vanishing factor in the viscosity, we obtain different regimes in the limit evolution and we discuss the locally uniform convergence of the solutions to the effective problem. The interesting feature of the model is that in the strong diffusion regime the effective operator is discontinuous in the gradient entry. We get a complete characterization of the limit solution in dimension $n=1$, whereas in dimension $n>1$ we discuss the main properties of the solutions to the effective problem selected at the limit and we prove uniqueness for some classes of initial data.

Liouville properties and critical value of fully nonlinear elliptic operators

We prove some Liouville properties for sub- and supersolutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations in the whole space. Our assumptions allow the coefficients of the first order terms to be large at infinity, provided they have an appropriate sign, as in Ornstein- Uhlenbeck operators. We give two applications. The first is a stabilization property for large times of solutions to fully nonlinear parabolic equations. The second is the solvability of an ergodic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation that identifies a unique critical value of the operator.

Volume constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with a potential energy

We consider volume-constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with the addition of a potential energy in the form of a volume inte- gral. Such minimizers are solutions of the prescribed fractional curvature problem. We prove existence and regularity of minimizers under suitable assumptions on the potential energy, which cover the periodic case. In the small volume regime we show that minimizers are close to balls, with a quantitative estimate.

Nonexistence of nonconstant solutions of some degenerate Bellman equations and applications to stochastic control

For a class of Bellman equations in bounded domains we prove that sub- and supersolutions whose growth at the boundary is suitably controlled must be constant. The ellipticity of the operator is assumed to degenerate at the boundary and a condition involving also the drift is further imposed. We apply this result to stochastic control problems, in particular to an exit problem and to the small discount limit related with ergodic control with state constraints. In this context, our condition on the behavior of the operator near the boundary ensures some invariance property of the domain for the associated controlled diffusion process.

Convergence in Multiscale Financial Models with Non-Gaussian Stochastic Volatility

We consider stochastic control systems affected by a fast mean reverting volatility $Y(t)$ driven by a pure jump Lévy process. Motivated by a large literature on financial models, we assume that $Y(t)$ evolves at a faster time scale $\frac{t}{\varepsilon}$ than the assets, and we study the asymptotics as $\varepsilon\to 0$. This is a singular perturbation problem that we study mostly by PDE methods within the theory of viscosity solutions.

Large deviations for some fast stochastic volatility models by viscosity methods

We consider the short time behaviour of stochastic systems affected by a stochastic volatility evolving at a faster time scale. We study the asymptotics of a logarithmic functional of the process by methods of the theory of homogenisation and singular perturbations for fully nonlinear PDEs. We point out three regimes depending on how fast the volatility oscillates relative to the horizon length. We prove a large deviation principle for each regime and apply it to the asymptotics of option prices near maturity.

Long-time behavior of the mean curvature flow with periodic forcing

We consider the long-time behavior of the mean curvature flow in heterogeneous media with periodic fibrations, modeled as an additive driving force. Under appropriate assumptions on the forcing term, we show existence of generalized traveling waves with maximal speed of propagation, and we prove the convergence of solutions to the forced mean curvature flow to these generalized waves.

Curvature flow in heterogeneous media

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in geometric evolution in heterogeneous media. Here we consider curvature driven fows of planar curves, with an additional space-dependent forcing term. Motivated by a homogenization problem, we look for estimates which depend only on the uniform norm of the forcing term. By means of an asymptotic analysis, we discuss the properties of the limit solutions of the homogenization problem, which we can rigorously solve in some special cases: that is, when the initial curve is a graph, and the forcing term does not depend on the vertical direction. As a by-product, in such cases we are able to define a soluton of the geometric evolution when the forcing term is just a bounded, not necessarily continuous, function.
