Rigidity of the ball for an isoperimetric problem with strong capacitary repulsion

We consider a variational problem involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. We show that, as opposed to the case of weak (short-range) interactions where we proved ill-posedness of the problem in a previous paper, when the repulsion is stronger the perimeter dominates the capacitary term at small scales. In particular we prove existence of minimizers for small charges as well as their regularity. Combining this with the stability of the ball under small $C^{1,γ}$ perturbations, this ultimately leads to the minimality of the ball for small charges. We cover in particular the borderline case of the $1-$capacity where both terms in the energy are of the same order.

Phase segregation for binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the strong segregation limit for mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates modelled by a Gross-Pitaievskii functional. Our first main result is that in presence of a trapping potential, for different intracomponent strengths, the Thomas-Fermi limit is sufficient to determine the shape of the minimizers. Our second main result is that for asymptotically equal intracomponent strengths, one needs to go to the next order. The relevant limit is a weighted isoperimetric problem. We then study the minimizers of this limit problem, proving radial symmetry or symmetry breaking for different values of the parameters. We finally show that in the absence of a confining potential, even for non-equal intracomponent strengths, one needs to study a related isoperimetric problem to gain information about the shape of the minimizers.

New bounds for the inhomogenous Burgers and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations

We give a substantially simplified proof of near-optimal estimate on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation from [F. Otto, "Optimal bounds on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation", JFA 2009], at the same time slightly improving the result. The result in the above cited paper relied on two ingredients: a regularity estimate for capillary Burgers and an a novel priori estimate for the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation, which works out that in many ways the conservative transport nonlinearity acts as a coercive term. It is the proof of the second ingredient that we substantially simplify by proving a modified Kármán-Howarth-Monin identity for solutions of the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation. This gives a new interpretation of the results obtained in [F. Golse, B. Perthame "Optimal regularizing effect for scalar conservation laws", Rev. Mat. Iber., 2013].

Existence and stability for a non-local isoperimetric model of charged liquid drops

We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.

Sharp interface limit for two components Bose-Einstein condensates

We study a double Cahn-Hilliard type functional related to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy of two-components Bose-Einstein condensates. In the case of large but same order intercomponent and intracomponent coupling strengths, we prove $Γ$-convergence to a perimeter minimisation functional with an inhomogeneous surface tension. We study the asymptotic behavior of the surface tension as the ratio between the intercomponent and intracomponent coupling strengths becomes very small or very large. We obtain as a consequence, symmetry breaking of the minimisers for the harmonic potential when this radio is sufficiently large.

Study of island formation in epitaxially strained films on unbounded domains

We consider a variational model for the formation of islands in heteroepitaxial growth on unbounded domains. We first derive the scaling regimes of the minimal energy in terms of the volume of the film and the amplitude of the crystallographic misfit. For small volumes, non-existence of minimizers is then proven. This corresponds to the experimentally observed wetting effect. On the other hand, we show the existence of minimizers for large volumes. We finally study the asymptotic behavior of the optimal shapes.

Existence and qualitative properties of isoperimetric sets in periodic media

We review and extend here some recent results on the existence of minimal surfaces and isoperimetric sets in non homogeneous and anisotropic periodic media. We also describe the qualitative properties of the homogenized surface tension, also known as stable norm (or minimal action) in Weak KAM theory. In particular we investigate its strict convexity and differentiability properties.

Nucleation barriers at corners for cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation

We are interested in the energetic cost of a martensitic inclusion of volume $V$ in austenite for the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation. In contrast with the work of [Knüpfer, Kohn, Otto: Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 66 (2013), no. 6, 867--904], we consider domain with a corner and obtain a better scaling law for the minimal energy ($E_{min} \sim \min(V^{2/3},V^{7/9})$). Our predictions are in a good agreement with physical experiments where nucleation of martensite is usually observed near the corners of the specimen.

The $Γ$-limit for singularly perturbed functionals of Perona-Malik type in arbitrary dimension

In this paper we generalize to arbitrary dimensions a one-dimensional equicoerciveness and $Γ$-convergence result for a second derivative perturbation of Perona-Malik type functionals. Our proof relies on a new density result in the space of special functions of bounded variation with vanishing diffuse gradient part. This provides a direction of investigation to derive approximation for functionals with discontinuities penalized with a "cohesive" energy, that is, whose cost depends on the actual opening of the discontinuity.

Volume-constrained minimizers for the prescribed curvature problem in periodic media

We establish existence of compact minimizers of the prescribed mean curvature problem with volume constraint in periodic media. As a consequence, we construct compact approximate solutions to the prescribed mean curvature equation. We also show convergence after rescaling of the volume-constrained minimizers towards a suitable Wulff Shape, when the volume tends to infinity.

Plane-like minimizers and differentiability of the stable norm

In this paper we investigate the strict convexity and the differentiability properties of the stable norm, which corresponds to the homogenized surface tension for a periodic perimeter homogenization problem (in a regular and uniformly elliptic case). We prove that it is always differentiable in totally irrational directions, while in other directions, it is differentiable if and only if the corresponding plane-like minimizers satisfying a strong Birkhoff property foliate the torus. We also discuss the issue of the uniqueness of the correctors for the corresponding homogenization problem.

Continuous Primal-Dual Methods for Image Processing

In this article we study a continuous Primal-Dual method proposed by Appleton and Talbot and generalize it to other problems in image processing. We interpret it as an Arrow-Hurwicz method which leads to a better description of the system of PDEs obtained. We show existence and uniqueness of solutions and get a convergence result for the denoising problem. Our analysis also yields new a posteriori estimates.
