Rigidity of the ball for an isoperimetric problem with strong capacitary repulsion

We consider a variational problem involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. We show that, as opposed to the case of weak (short-range) interactions where we proved ill-posedness of the problem in a previous paper, when the repulsion is stronger the perimeter dominates the capacitary term at small scales. In particular we prove existence of minimizers for small charges as well as their regularity. Combining this with the stability of the ball under small $C^{1,γ}$ perturbations, this ultimately leads to the minimality of the ball for small charges. We cover in particular the borderline case of the $1-$capacity where both terms in the energy are of the same order.

A spectral shape optimization problem with a nonlocal competing term

We study the minimization of a spectral functional made as the sum of the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian and the relative strength of a Riesz-type interaction functional. We show that when the Riesz repulsion strength is below a critical value, existence of minimizers occurs. Then we prove, by means of an expansion analysis, that the ball is a rigid minimizer when the Riesz repulsion is small enough. Eventually we show that for certain regimes of the Riesz repulsion, regular minimizers do not exist.

Conducting flat drops in a confining potential

We study a geometric variational problem arising from modeling two-dimensional charged drops of a perfectly conducting liquid in the presence of an external potential. We characterize the semicontinuous envelope of the energy in terms of a parameter measuring the relative strength of the Coulomb interaction. As a consequence, when the potential is confining and the Coulomb repulsion strength is below a critical value, we show existence and partial regularity of volume-constrained minimizers. We also derive the Euler--Lagrange equation satisfied by regular critical points, expressing the first variation of the Coulombic energy in terms of the normal $\frac12$-derivative of the capacitary potential.

A note on the hausdorff dimension of the singular set for minimizers of the mumford-shah energy

We give a more elementary proof of a result by Ambrosio, Fusco and Hutchinson to estimate the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of minimizers of the Mumford-Shah energy (see [2, Theorem 5.6]). On the one hand, we follow the strategy of the above mentioned paper; but on the other hand our analysis greatly simplifies the argument since it relies on the compactness result proved by the first two Authors in [4, Theorem 13] for sequences of local minimizers with vanishing gradient energy, and the regularity theory of minimal Caccioppoli partitions, rather than on the corresponding results for Almgren's area minimizing sets.

Existence and stability for a non-local isoperimetric model of charged liquid drops

We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.

Non-Local Isoperimetric Problems

We characterize the volume-constrained minimizers of a nonlocal free energy given by the difference of the $t$-perimeter and the $s$-perimeter, with $s$ smaller than $t$. Exploiting the quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality, we show that balls are the unique minimizers if the volume is sufficiently small, depending on $t-s$, while the existence vs. nonexistence of minimizers for large volumes remains open. We also consider the corresponding isoperimetric problem and prove existence and regularity of minimizers for all $s,\,t$. When $s=0$ this problem reduces to the fractional isoperimetric problem, for which it is well known that balls are the only minimizers.

Stability theorems for GNS inequalities: a reduction principle to the radial case

A symmetrization techique, introduced by Cianchi, Fusco, Maggi and Pratelli concerning the Sobolev inequality, is adapted to the Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality (GNS) to obtain a reduction step of the problem of showing its quantitative version. More precisely we prove a stability result for the GNS inequality under the hypothesis that it holds, in turn, in the smaller class of radial symmetric decreasing functions.
