Bright soliton interactions in the variable coefficient Fokas-Lenells equation, Conservation laws, Modulation instability and Soliton tunneling

We present here a study of the bright soliton dynamics in an inhomogeneous fibre by means of variable coefficient Fokas-Lenells equation with time varying dispersion, nonlinearity and gain/loss parameter. At first, we propose our system that governs the propagation of ultrashort pulses in an inhomogeneous fibre. Secondly, under a suitable gauge transformation, we transform the system into a simplified form of variable coefficient Fokas-Lenells equation. The Lax integrability and conservation laws are exhibited. We also study the stability of the generalised plane wave against small amplitude perturbations. Thereafter, by using a nonstandard Hirota bilinearization method with the help of a suitable auxiliary function, we obtain the bright one soliton, two soliton and provide a scheme for obtaining N-bright soliton solutions. The elastic collision dynamics of the two solitons is studied using asymptotic analysis. We also investigate the soliton acceleration/retardation under a suitable choice of dispersion and nonlinearity coefficients. Finally, the dramatic effect of the nonlinear tunnelling of the bright one and two-soliton is also studied under some Gaussian dispersion or nonlinearity.

Self-oscillations induced by self-induced torque in magnetic double tunnel junction

Self-oscillations of the magnetization due to self-induced torque (SIT) in a magnetic double tunnel junction that consists of perpendicularly polarized, pinned and free layers is investigated along with the field-like torque (FLT). The associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation is numerically analysed to exhibit the oscillations of magnetization driven by the current. From the numerical analysis, we show that the SIT is essential to generate oscillations in the order of GHz and without it the magnetization reaches steady state after exhibiting switching. Without FLT, the frequency of the oscillations decreases with the current while the power of oscillations increases. In the presence of the negative strength of the FLT the power spectral density confirms that the frequency, power and the Q-factor increase with the current. Also the tunability range and the rate at which the frequency enhances increase with the magnitude of the FLT.

Harnessing vibrational resonance to identify and enhance input signals

We report the occurrence of vibrational resonance (VR) and the underlying mechanism in a simple piecewise linear electronic circuit, namely the Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua (MLC) circuit, driven by an additional biharmonic signal with widely different frequency. When the amplitude of the high-frequency force is tuned, the resultant vibrational resonance is used to detect the low-frequency signal and also to enhance it into a high-frequency signal. Further, we also show that even when the low-frequency signal is changed from sine wave to square and sawtooth waves, vibrational resonance can be used to detect and enhance them into high-frequency signals. These behaviors, confirmed by experimental results, are illustrated with appropriate analytical and numerical solutions of the corresponding circuit equations describing the system. Finally, we also verify the signal detection in the above circuit even with the addition of noise.

A Class of Isochronous and Non-Isochronous Nonlinear Oscillators

In this work, we present a method of generating a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), representing the dynamics of appropriate nonlinear oscillators, that have the characteristics of either amplitude independent frequency of oscillations or amplitude dependent frequency of oscillations from the integrals of the simple harmonic oscillator equation. To achieve this, we consider the case where the integrals are in the same form both for the linear and the nonlinear oscillators in either of the cases. We also discuss the method of deriving the associated integrals and the general solution in harmonic form for both the types. We demonstrate the applicability of this method up to 2N coupled first order nonlinear ODEs in both the cases. Further, we illustrate the theory with an example in each case.

Additional complex conjugate feedback induced explosive death and multistabilities

Many natural and man-made systems require suitable feedback to function properly. In this study, we aim to investigate the impact of additional complex conjugate feedback on globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. We find that this additional feedback results in the onset of symmetry breaking clusters and out-of-phase clusters. Interestingly, we also find the existence of explosive amplitude death along with disparate multistable states. We characterize the first-order transition to explosive death through the amplitude order parameter and show that the transition from oscillatory to death state indeed shows a hysteresis nature. Further, we map the global dynamical transitions in the parametric spaces. In addition, to understand the existence of multistabilities and their transitions, we analyze the bifurcation scenarios of the reduced model and also explore their basin stability. Our study will shed light on the emergent dynamics in the presence of additional feedback.

Aging transition under discrete time-dependent coupling: Restoring rhythmicity from aging

We explore the aging transition in a network of globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators under a discrete time-dependent coupling. In this coupling, the connections among the oscillators are turned ON and OFF in a systematic manner, having either a symmetric or an asymmetric time interval. We discover that depending upon the time period and duty cycle of the ON-OFF intervals, the aging region shrinks drastically in the parameter space, therefore promoting restoration of oscillatory dynamics from the aging. In the case of symmetric discrete coupling (where the ON-OFF intervals are equal), the aging zone decreases significantly with the resumption of dynamism with an increasing time period of the ON-OFF intervals. On the other hand, in the case of asymmetric coupling (where the ON-OFF intervals are not equal), we find that the ratio of the ON and OFF intervals controls the aging dynamics: the aging state is revoked more effectively if the interval of the OFF state is greater than the ON state. Finally, we study the transition in aging using a discrete pulse coupling: we note that the pulse interval plays a crucial role in determining the aging region. For all the cases of discrete time-dependent couplings, the aging regions are shrinking and the rhythmicity gets enhanced in a controlled manner. Our findings suggest that this type of coupling can act as a noninvasive way to restore the oscillatory dynamics from an aging state in a network of coupled oscillators.

Analysis of COVID-19 in India using vaccine epidemic model incorporating vaccine effectiveness and herd immunity

COVID-19 will be a continuous threat to human population despite having a few vaccines at hand until we reach the endemic state through natural herd immunity and total immunization through universal vaccination. However, the vaccine acts as a practical tool for reducing the massive public health problem and the emerging economic consequences that the continuing COVID -19 epidemic is causing worldwide, while the vaccine efficacy wanes. In this work, we propose and analyze an epidemic model of Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Vaccinated (SEIRV) population taking into account the rate of vaccination and vaccine waning. The dynamics of the model has been investigated, and the condition for a disease-free endemic equilibrium state is obtained. Further, the analysis is extended to study the COVID-19 spread in India by considering the availability of vaccines and the related critical parameters such as vaccination rate, vaccine efficacy and waning of vaccine's impact on deciding the emerging fate of this epidemic. We have also discussed the conditions for herd immunity due to vaccinated individuals among the people. Our results highlight the importance of vaccines, the effectiveness of booster vaccination in protecting people from infection, and their importance in epidemic and pandemic modelling.

Bright, dark and breather soliton solutions of the generalized long-wave short-wave resonance interaction system

In this paper, a generalized long-wave short-wave resonance interaction system, which describes the nonlinear interaction between a short-wave and a long-wave in fluid dynamics, plasma physics and nonlinear optics, is considered. Using the Hirota bilinear method, the general $N$-bright and $N$-dark soliton solutions are deduced and their Gram determinant forms are obtained. A special feature of the fundamental bright soliton solution is that, in general, it behaves like the Korteweg-deVries soliton. However, under a special condition, it also behaves akin to the nonlinear Schrödinger soliton when it loses the amplitude dependent velocity property. The fundamental dark-soliton solution admits anti-dark, grey, and completely black soliton profiles, in the short-wave component, depending on the choice of wave parameters. On the other hand, a bright soliton like profile always occurs in the long-wave component. The asymptotic analysis shows that both the bright and dark solitons undergo an elastic collision with a finite phase shift. In addition to these, by tuning the phase shift regime, we point out the existence of resonance interactions among the bright solitons. Furthermore, under a special velocity resonance condition, we bring out the various types of bright and dark soliton bound states. Also, by fixing the phase factor and the system parameter $β$, corresponding to the interaction between long and short wave components, the different types of profiles associated with the obtained breather solution are demonstrated.

Dynamics of nondegenerate solitons in long-wave short-wave resonance interaction system

In this paper, we study the dynamics of an interesting class of vector solitons in the long wave-short wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system. The model that we consider here describes the nonlinear interaction of the long-wave and two-short waves and it generically appears in several physical settings. To derive this class of nondegenerate vector soliton solutions we adopt the Hirota bilinear method with the more general form of admissible seed solutions with nonidentical distinct propagation constants. We express the resultant fundamental as well as multi-soliton solutions in a compact way using Gram-determinants. The general fundamental vector soliton solution possesses several interesting properties. For instance, the double-hump or a single-hump profile structure including a special flattop profile form results in when the soliton propagates in all the components with identical velocities. Interestingly, in the case of nonidentical velocities, the soliton number is increased to two in the long-wave (LW) component, while a single-humped soliton propagates in the two short-wave (SW) components. We establish through a detailed analysis that the nondegenerate multi-solitons in contrast to the already known vector solitons (with identical wave numbers) can undergo three types of elastic collision scenarios: (i) shape preserving, (ii) shape altering, and (iii) a novel shape changing collision, depending on the choice of the soliton parameters. In addition, we point out the coexistence of nondegenerate and degenerate solitons simultaneously along with the associated physical consequences. We also indicate the physical realizations of these general vector solitons in nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, and Bose-Einstein condensates. Our results are generic and they will be useful in these physical systems and other closely related systems including plasma physics.

Effect of interlayer exchange coupling in spin-torque nano oscillator

The dynamics of the magnetization of the free layer in a spin-torque nano oscillator (STNO) influenced by a noncollinear alignment between the magnetizations of the free and pinned layers due to an interlayer exchange coupling has been investigated theoretically. The orientations of the magnetization of the free layer with that of the pinned layer have been computed through the macrospin model and they are found to match well with experimental results. The bilinear and biquadratic coupling strengths make the current to switch the magnetization between two states or oscillate steadily. The expressions for the critical currents between which oscillations are possible and the critical bilinear coupling strength below which oscillations are not possible are derived. The frequency of the oscillations is shown to be tuned and increased to or above 300 GHz by the current which is the largest to date among nanopillar-shaped STNOs.

Emerging chimera states under non-identical counter-rotating oscillators

Frequency plays a crucial role in exhibiting various collective dynamics in the coexisting co- and counter-rotating (CR) systems. To illustrate the impact of CR frequencies, we consider a network of non-identical and globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with additional perturbation. Primarily, we investigate the dynamical transitions in the absence of perturbation, demonstrating that the transition from desynchronized state to cluster oscillatory state occurs through an interesting partial synchronization state. Followed by this, the system dynamics transits to amplitude death and oscillation death states. Importantly, we find that the observed dynamical states do not preserve the parity(P) symmetry in the absence of perturbation. When the perturbation is increased one can note that the system dynamics exhibits a new kind of transition which corresponds to a change from incoherent mixed synchronization to coherent mixed synchronization through chimera state. In particular, incoherent mixed synchronization and coherent mixed synchronization states completely preserve the P-symmetry, whereas the chimera state preserves the P-symmetry only partially. To demonstrate the occurrence of such partial symmetry breaking (chimera) state, we use basin stability analysis and discover that PSB exists as a result of the coexistence of symmetry preserving and symmetry breaking behavior in the initial state space. Further, a measure of the strength of P-symmetry is established to quantify the P-symmetry in the observed dynamical states. Finally, by increasing the network size, the robustness of the chimera is also inspected and we find that the chimera state is robust even in networks of larger sizes. We also show the generality of the above results in the related phase reduced model as well as in other coupled models such as the globally coupled van der Pol and Rössler oscillators.

Influence of Asymmetric Parameters in Higher-Order Coupling With Bimodal Frequency Distribution

We investigate the phase diagram of the Sakaguchi-Kuramoto model with a higher order interaction along with the traditional pairwise interaction. We also introduce asymmetry parameters in both the interaction terms and investigate the collective dynamics and their transitions in the phase diagrams under both unimodal and bimodal frequency distributions. We deduce the evolution equations for the macroscopic order parameters and eventually derive pitchfork and Hopf bifurcation curves. Transition from the incoherent state to standing wave pattern is observed in the presence of the unimodal frequency distribution. In contrast, a rich variety of dynamical states such as the incoherent state, partially synchronized state-I, partially synchronized state-II, and standing wave patterns and transitions among them are observed in the phase diagram, via various bifurcation scenarios including saddle-node and homoclinic bifurcations, in the presence of bimodal frequency distribution. Higher order coupling enhances the spread of the bistable regions in the phase diagrams and also leads to the manifestation of bistability between incoherent and partially synchronized states even with unimodal frequency distribution, which is otherwise not observed with the pairwise coupling. Further, the asymmetry parameters facilitate the onset of several bistable and multistable regions in the phase diagrams. Very large values of the asymmetry parameters allow the phase diagrams to admit only the monostable dynamical states.

Inhomogeneous nonlinearity meets $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Bragg structures: Route to ultra-low power steering and peculiar stable states

In the context of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg gratings, tailoring the nonlinear profile along the propagation coordinate serves to be a new direction for realizing low-power all-optical switches. The scheme is fruitful only when the nonlinearity profile will be either linearly decreasing or increasing form. If the rate of variation of the nonlinearity profile is high, the critical intensities fall below the input power of value 0.01 in the unbroken regime provided that the light launching direction is right. Nowadays, every new theoretical inception into the PTFBG has started making sense of switching in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime which was once believed to be the instability regime. When the inhomogeneous nonlinearity acts together with the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and right light incidence, it leads to two peculiar settings. First, the switch-up intensities are ultra-low. Second, the switch-down action takes place at zero critical intensities. Such OB curves are unprecedented in the context of conventional gratings and found only in plasmonic devices and anti-directional couplers. Even though the nonlinearity is inhomogeneous, the ramp-like first stable states persist in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime giving an additional indication that the broken PTFBG is closely associated with the plasmonic structures. In the existing PTFBG systems, the switching intensities are relatively higher in the broken regime. However, the proposed system records the lowest switching intensities in the broken regime. The reported intensities ($< 0.005$) are also the lowest ever-switching intensities recorded in the perspective of PTFBGs to date.

Low-power optical bistability in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric chirped Bragg gratings with four-wave mixing

The central theme of this article is the analysis of the usefulness of introducing four-wave mixing or modulation of Kerr nonlinearity in a nonuniform grating structure with gain and loss. To do so, we propose an inhomogeneous system in which the nonlinearity of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric grating is modulated. It is proven that the proposed scheme can be fruitful only if the nonlinearity and its associated modulation terms are assumed to be self-defocusing ones. In order to cut down the intensity required for the steering, the sign of chirping is taken to be negative and the wavelength of operating light is considered to be higher than the Bragg wavelength. Alongside these settings, launching the light from the rear end of the device dramatically reduces the critical intensity to a value of 0.015 (approximately) which must be the lowest switching intensity ever reported in the context of nonlinear $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric gratings. The ramp-like stable states in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime prevail even in the company of modulation in the nonlinearity index for both of the light incident directions.

Quantum solvability of a nonlinear $δ$-type mass profile system: Coupling constant quantization

In this paper, we discuss the quantum dynamics of a nonlinear system that admits temporally localized solutions at the classical level. We consider a general ordered position-dependent mass Hamiltonian in which the ordering parameters of the mass term are treated as arbitrary. The mass function here is singular at the origin. We observe that the quantum system admits bounded solutions but importantly the coupling parameter of the system gets quantized which has also been confirmed by the semiclassical study as well.

Stabilization of light bullets in nonlinear metamaterial waveguides

In this paper, we carry out a theoretical investigation on the propagation of spatio-temporal solitons (light bullets) in the nonlinear metamaterial waveguides. Our theoretical study is based on the formulation of Lagrangian variational analysis with a suitable ansatz followed by a split-step Fourier method in confirming the outcomes former numerically. A particular emphasis is given to obtain the conditions on the system parameters for stable dynamics in negative as well as positive index regimes of metamaterial waveguides. Similar to the conventional medium, the three-dimensional (3D) light bullets are highly unstable in metamaterials with the Kerr type nonlinearity alone. However, in the negative index regime of metamaterials, stable propagation of light bullets may occur in the normal dispersion regime balancing with defocusing cubic nonlinearity and focusing quintic nonlinearity. As in the conventional case, the stable dynamics is also observed in the case of anomalous dispersion with focusing cubic nonlinearity and defocusing quintic nonlinearity in the positive index regime. To test the solitonic nature of the 3D light bullets in the metamaterials, we also numerically investigate the collision dynamics of two light bullets. The study shows that the spatio-temporal soliton propagates without any change except perhaps some phase shift after a collision with another spatio-temporal soliton in competing cubic and quintic nonlinear metamaterials. The improper balancing between the linear and nonlinear effects results to form the bullet molecules in a distorted form with a large amount of energy after interaction and in the long run, oscillations of the light bullets grow and the bullets become filaments. We have observed the same collision dynamics in both the negative and positive refractive index regimes of the metamaterial.

Analysis of the second wave of COVID-19 in India based on SEIR model

India was under a grave threat from the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic particularly in the beginning of May 2021. The situation appeared rather gloomy as the number of infected individuals/active cases had increased alarmingly during the months of May and June 2021 compared to the first wave peak. Indian government/state governments have been implementing various control measures such as lock-downs, setting up new hospitals, and putting travel restrictions at various stages to lighten the virus spread from the initial outbreak of the pandemic. Recently, we have studied the susceptible-exposed-infectious-removed(SEIR) dynamic modelling of the epidemic evolution of COVID-19 in India with the help of appropriate parameters quantifying the various governmental actions and the intensity of individual reactions. Our analysis had predicted the scenario of the first wave quite well. In this present article, we extend our analysis to estimate and analyze the number of infected individuals during the second wave of COVID-19 in India with the help of the above SEIR model. Our findings show that the people's individual effort along with governmental actions such as implementations of curfews, accelerated vaccine strategy are the most important factors to control the pandemic in the present situation and in the future.

Multihumped nondegenerate fundamental bright solitons in $N$-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger system

In this letter we report the existence of nondegenerate fundamental bright soliton solution for coupled multi-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations of Manakov type. To derive this class of nondegenerate vector soliton solutions, we adopt the Hirota bilinear method with appopriate general class of seed solutions. Very interestingly the obtained nondegenerate fundamental soliton solution of the $N$-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) system admits multi-hump natured intensity profiles. We explicitly demonstrate this specific property by considering the nondegenerate soliton solutions for $3$ and $4$-CNLS systems. We also point out the existence of a special class of partially nondegenerate soliton solutions by imposing appropriate restrictions on the wavenumbers in the already obtained completely nondegenerate soliton solution. Such class of soliton solutions can also exhibit multi-hump profile structures. Finally, we present the stability analysis of nondegenerate fundamental soliton of the $3$-CNLS system as an example. The numerical results confirm the stability of triple-humped profile nature against perturbations of 5\% and 10\% white noise. The multi-hump nature of nondegenerate fundamental soliton solution will be usefull in multi-level optical communication applications with enhanced flow of data in multi-mode fibers.

Spin Torque Oscillations Triggered by In-plane Field

We study the dynamics of a spin torque nano oscillator that consists of parallelly magnetized free and pinned layers by numerically solving the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation in the presence of a field-like torque. We observe that an in-plane magnetic field which is applied for a short interval of time ($<$1ns) triggers the magnetization to exhibit self-oscillations from low energy initial magnetization state. Also, we confirm that the frequency of oscillations can be tuned over the range $\sim$25 GHz to $\sim$72 GHz by current, even in the absence of field-like torque. We find the frequency enhancement up to 10 GHz by the presence of field-like torque. We determine the Q-factor for different frequencies and show that it increases with frequency. Our analysis with thermal noise confirms that the system is stable against thermal noise and the dynamics is not altered appreciably by it.

Spiral wave chimera-like transient dynamics in three-dimensional grid of diffusive ecological systems

In the present article, we demonstrate the emergence and existence of the spiral wave chimera-like transient pattern in coupled ecological systems, composed of prey-predator patches, where the patches are connected in a three-dimensional medium through local diffusion. We explore the transition scenarios among the several collective dynamical behaviors together with transient spiral wave chimera-like states and investigate the long time behavior of these states. The transition from the transient spiral chimera-like pattern to the long time synchronized or desynchronized pattern appears through the deformation of the incoherent region of the spiral core. We discuss the transient dynamics under the influence of the species diffusion at different time instants. By calculating the instantaneous strength of incoherence of the populations, we estimate the duration of the transient dynamics characterized by the persistence of the chimera-like spatial coexistence of coherent and incoherent patterns over the spatial domain. We generalize our observations on the transient dynamics in three-dimensional grid of diffusive ecological systems by considering two different prey-predator systems.

Dispersion Managed Generation of Peregrine Solitons and Kuznetsov-Ma Breather in an Optical Fiber

Optical rogue waves and its variants have been studied quite extensively in the context of optical fiber in recent years. It has been realized that dispersion management in optical fiber is experimentally much more feasible compared to its nonlinear counterpart. In this work, we report Kuznetsov-Ma (KM)-like breathers from the first three orders of rational solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic modulation of the dispersion coefficient along the fiber axis. The breather dynamics are then controlled by proper choice of modulating parameters. Additionally, the evolution of new one-peak and two-peak breather-like solutions has been displayed corresponding to the second-order rational solution. Direct numerical simulations based on modulational instability has also been executed which agree well with the analytical results, thereby making the proposed system more feasible for experimental realization.

Dynamics of a non-autonomous system with age-structured growth and harvesting of prey and mutually interfering predator with reliance on alternative food

We perform a detailed analysis of the behaviour of a non-autonomous prey-predator model where age based growth with age discriminatory harvesting in prey and predator's reliance upon alternative food in the absence of that particular prey are considered. We begin by deriving certain sufficient conditions for permanence and positive invariance and then proceed to construct a Lyapunov function to derive some constraints for global attractivity. With the help of continuation theorem we arrive at the best fit criterion to prove the occurrence of a positive periodic solution. Moreover, using Arzela-Ascoli theorem we formulate a proof for a unique positive solution to be almost periodic and we carry out numerical simulation to verify the analytical findings. With the aid of graphs and tables we show the nature of the prey-predator system in response to the alternative food and delays.

Frequency enhancement and power tunability in tilted polarizer spin-torque nano oscillator

In the absence of an applied magnetic field, a spin-torque nano oscillator(STNO) with a tilted polarizer is studied using numerical simulation of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. We find considerable enhancement of frequency by tilting the polarizer out-of-plane appropriately. Also, we observe improved tunability of frequency of oscillations from 15 GHz to 75 GHz and increment in the power spectral density by current and tilt angle. In addition, our findings and insights pave a simple way for nanoscale level microwave generators to be implemented.

Impact of higher-order effects on dissipative soliton in metamaterials

We study the influence of higher-order effects such as third order dispersion (TOD), fourth order dispersion (FOD), quintic nonlinearity (QN), self steepening (SS) and second order nonlinear dispersion (SOND) on the dynamics of dissipative soliton (DS) in metamaterials. Considering each higher-order effect as a perturbation to the system and following Lagrangian variational method, we demonstrate stable dynamics of DS as a result of the interplay between different higher-order effects. We also perform numerical analysis to confirm the analytical results.

Interplay between reproduction and age selective harvesting delays of a single population non-autonomous system

This paper is concerned with an analysis of the dynamics of a non-autonomous, single population age based growth model with harvesting formulation. First, we derive sufficient conditions for permanence and positive invariance. Then, by constructing a scalar function, namely the Lyapunov function, we arrive at a suitable criterion for global attractivity. With the help of Brouwer fixed point and continuation theorems, we obtain constraints for the existence of a positive periodic solution. Then we prove that there exists only one solution which is almost periodic in nature that is distinct from every other solution. Further, we carry out a numerical simulation to support the analytical findings.

Phase shifted $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric periodic structures

We report the spectral features of a phase-shifted parity and time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric fiber Bragg grating (PPTFBG) and demonstrate its functionality as a demultiplexer in the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime. The length of the proposed system is of the order of millimeters and the lasing spectra in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime can be easily tuned in terms of intensity, bandwidth and wavelength by varying the magnitude of the phase shift in the middle of the structure. Surprisingly, the multi-modal lasing spectra are suppressed by virtue of judiciously selected phase and the gain-loss value. Also, it is possible to obtain sidelobe-less spectra in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime, without a need for an apodization profile, which is a traditional way to tame the unwanted sidelobes. The system is found to show narrow band single-mode lasing behavior for a wide range of phase shift values for given values of gain and loss. Moreover, we report the intensity tunable reflection and transmission characteristics in the unbroken regime via variation in gain and loss. At the exceptional point, the system shows unidirectional wave transport phenomenon independent of the presence of phase shift in the middle of the grating. For the right light incidence direction, the system exhibits zero reflection wavelengths within the stopband at the exceptional point. We also investigate the role of multiple phase shifts placed at fixed locations along the length of the FBG and the variations in the spectra when the phase shift and gain-loss values are tuned. In the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime, the presence of multiple phase shifts aids in controlling the number of reflectivity peaks besides controlling their magnitude.

Self-trapped dynamics of a hollow Gaussian beam in metamaterials

We present a systematic investigation on the dynamics of a hollow Gaussian beam (HGB) in metamaterials. We predict self-trapped propagation of HGBs and evolution of the beam is highly influenced by dimensionless dispersion coefficient (k), which determines the strength of dispersion over diffraction. The evolutions of HGBs such as disappearance of single ringed intensity pattern and appearance of patterns with a central bright spot are achievable with less propagation distance in metamaterials with higher values of k. On the other hand, metamaterials with low values of k can preserve single ring intensity distribution over a long propagation distance without focusing. When the strength of dispersion over diffraction increases, it significantly influences the evolution of the beam and may lead to the formation of tightly focussed beam with high peak intensity at the center. The phenomenon of tight focussing is found to have some applications in trapping of nanosized particles.

Sliding Bifurcations in the Memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua Circuit and the Memristive Driven Chua Oscillator

In this paper we report the occurrence of sliding bifurcations admitted by the memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua circuit \cite{icha13} and the memristive driven Chua oscillator \citep{icha11}. Both of these circuits have a flux-controlled active memristor designed by the authors in 2011, as their non-linear element. The three segment piecewise-linear characteristic of this memristor bestows on the circuits two discontinuity boundaries, dividing their phase spaces into three sub-regions. For proper choice of parameters, these circuits take on a degree of smoothness equal to one at each of their two discontinuities, thereby causing them to behave as \textit{Filippov} systems. Sliding bifurcations, which are characteristic of Filippov systems, arise when the periodic orbits in each of the sub-regions, interact with the discontinuity boundaries, giving rise to many interesting dynamical phenomena. The numerical simulations are carried out after incorporating proper zero time discontinuity mapping (ZDM) corrections. These are found to agree well with the experimental observations which we report here appropriately.

Tailoring inhomogeneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg grating spectra

The unique spectral behavior exhibited by a class of non-uniform Bragg periodic structures, namely chirped and apodized fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) influenced by parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, is presented. The interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and nonuniformities brings exceptional functionalities in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase such as wavelength selective amplification and single-mode lasing for a wide range of variations in gain-loss. We observe that the device is no more passive and it undergoes a series of transitions from asymmetric reflection to unidirectional invisibility and multi-mode amplification as a consequence of variation in the imaginary part of the strength of modulation in different apodization profiles, namely Gaussian and raised cosine, at the given value of chirping. The chirping affords bandwidth control as well as control over the magnitude of the reflected (transmitted) light. Likewise, apodization offers additional functionality in the form of suppression of uncontrolled lasing behavior in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime besides moderating the reflected signals outside the band edges of the spectra.

Tunable nonlinear spectra of anti-directional couplers

We produce transmission and reflection spectra of the anti-directional coupler (ADC) composed of linearly-coupled positive- and negative-refractive-index arms, with intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. Both reflection and transmission feature two highly amplified peaks at two distinct wavelengths in a certain range of values of the gain, making it possible to design a wavelength-selective mode-amplification system. We also predict that a blend of gain and loss in suitable proportions can robustly enhance reflection spectra which are detrimentally affected by the attenuation, in addition to causing red and blue shifts owing to the Kerr effect. In particular, ADC with equal gain and loss coefficients, is considered in necessary detail.

Complex dynamics generated by negative and positive feedback delays of a prey-predator system with prey refuge: Hopf bifurcation to Chaos

Various field and laboratory experiments show that prey refuge plays a significant role in the stability of prey-predator dynamics. On the other hand, theoretical studies show that delayed system exhibits a much more realistic dynamics than its non-delayed counterpart. In this paper, we study a multi-delayed prey-predator model with prey refuge. We consider modified Holling Type II response function that incorporates the effect of prey refuge and then introduce two discrete delays in the model system. A negative feedback delay is considered in the logistic prey growth rate to represent density dependent feedback mechanism and a positive feedback delay is considered to represent the gestation time of the predator. Our study reveals that the system exhibits different dynamical behaviors, viz., stable coexistence, periodic coexistence or chaos depending on the values of the delay parameters and degree of prey refuge. The interplay between two delays for a fixed value of prey refuge has also been determined. It is noticed that these delays work in a complementary fashion. In addition, using the normal form theory and center manifold argument, we derive the explicit formulae for determining the direction of the bifurcation, the stability and other properties of the bifurcating periodic solutions.

Different kinds of chimera death states in nonlocally coupled oscillators

We investigate the significance of nonisochronicity parameter in a network of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry breaking form. We observe that the presence of nonisochronicity parameter leads to structural changes in the chimera death region while varying the strength of the interaction. This gives rise to the existence of different types of chimera death states such as multi-chimera death state, type-I periodic chimera death (PCD) state and, type-II periodic chimera death (PCD) state. We also find that the number of periodic domains in both the types of PCD states exponentially decreases with an increase of coupling range and obeys a power law under nonlocal coupling. Additionally, we also analyze the structural changes of chimera death states by reducing the system of dynamical equations to a phase model through the phase approximation. We also briefly study the role of nonisochronicity parameter on chimera states, where the existence of multi-chimera state with respect to the coupling range is pointed out. Moreover, we also analyze the robustness of the chimera death state to perturbations in the natural frequencies of the oscillators.

Different Types of Synchronization in Coupled Network Based Chaotic Circuits

We propose a simple and new unified method to achieve lag, complete and anticipatory synchronizations in coupled nonlinear systems. It can be considered as an alternative to the subsystem and intentional parameter mismatch methods. This novel method is illustrated in a unidirectionally coupled RC phase shift network based Chua's circuit. Employing feedback coupling, different types of chaos synchronization are observed experimentally and numerically in coupled identical chaotic oscillators {\emph{without using time delay}}. With a simple switch in the experimental set up we observe different kinds of synchronization. We also analyze the coupled system with numerical simulations.

Emergence of a common generalized synchronization manifold in network motifs of structurally different time-delay systems

We point out the existence of a transition from partial to global generalized synchronization (GS) in symmetrically coupled structurally different time-delay systems of different orders using the auxiliary system approach and the mutual false nearest neighbor method. The present authors have recently reported that there exists a common GS manifold even in an ensemble of structurally nonidentical scalar time-delay systems with different fractal dimensions and shown that GS occurs simultaneously with phase synchronization (PS). In this paper we confirm that the above result is not confined just to scalar one-dimensional time-delay systems alone but there exists a similar type of transition even in the case of time-delay systems with different orders. We calculate the maximal transverse Lyapunov exponent to evaluate the asymptotic stability of the complete synchronization manifold of each of the main and the corresponding auxiliary systems, which in turn ensures the stability of the GS manifold between the main systems. Further we estimate the correlation coefficient and the correlation of probability of recurrence to establish the relation between GS and PS. We also calculate the mutual false nearest neighbor parameter which doubly confirms the occurrence of the global GS manifold.

Imperfect synchronized states and chimera states in two interacting populations of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

We investigate the emergence of different kinds of imperfect synchronized states and chimera states in two interacting populations of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. We find that the complete synchronization in population-I and existence of solitary oscillators which escape from the synchronized group in population-II lead to imperfect synchronized states for sufficiently small values of nonisochronicity parameter. Interestingly, on increasing the strength of this parameter further there occurs an onset of mixed imperfect synchronized states where the solitary oscillators occur from both the populations. Synchronized oscillators from both the populations are locked to a common average frequency. In both the cases of imperfect synchronized states synchronized oscillators exhibit periodic motion while the solitary oscillators are quasi-periodic in nature. In this region, for spatially prepared initial conditions, we can observe the mixed chimera states where the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized oscillations occur from both the populations. On the other hand, imperfect synchronized states are not always stable, and they can drift aperiodically due to instability caused by an increase of nonisochronicity parameter. We observe that these states are robust to the introduction of frequency mismatch between the two populations.

Interplay of symmetries and other integrability quantifiers in finite dimensional integrable nonlinear dynamical systems

In this work, we establish a connection between the extended Prelle-Singer procedure with other widely used analytical methods to identify integrable systems in the case of $n^{th}$-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). By synthesizing these methods we bring out the interlink between Lie point symmetries, contact symmetries, $λ$-symmetries, adjoint-symmetries, null forms, Darboux polynomials, integrating factors, Jacobi last multiplier and generalized $λ$-symmetries corresponding to the $n^{th}$-order ODEs. We also prove these interlinks with suitable examples. By exploiting these interconnections, the characteristic quantities associated with different methods can be deduced without solving the associated determining equations.

Manipulating localized matter waves in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze vector localized solutions of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with variable nonlinearity parameter and external trap potential through similarity transformation technique which transforms the two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with constant coefficients under a specific integrability condition. In this analysis we consider three different types of external trap potentials: a time-independent trap, a time-dependent monotonic trap, and a time-dependent periodic trap. We point out the existence of different interesting localized structures, namely rogue waves, dark-and bright soliton-rogue wave, and rogue wave-breather-like wave for the above three cases of trap potentials. We show how the vector localized density profiles in a constant background get deformed when we tune the strength of the trap parameter. Further we investigate the nature of the trajectories of the nonautonomous rogue waves. We also construct the dark-dark rogue wave solution for repulsive-repulsive interaction of two-component BECs and analyze the associated characteristics for the three different kinds of traps. We then deduce single, two and three composite rogue waves for three component BECs and discuss the correlated characteristics when we tune the strength of the trap parameter for different trap potentials.

Phase-flip chimera induced by environmental nonlocal coupling

We report the emergence of a collective dynamical state, namely phase-flip chimera, from an en- semble of identical nonlinear oscillators that are coupled indirectly via the dynamical variables from a common environment, which in turn are nonlocally coupled. The phase-flip chimera is character- ized by the coexistence of two adjacent out-of-phase synchronized coherent domains interspersed by an incoherent domain, in which the nearby oscillators are in out-of-phase synchronized states. At- tractors of the coherent domains are either from the same or different basins of attractions depending on whether they are periodic or chaotic. Conventional chimera precedes the phase-flip chimera in general. Further, the phase-flip chimera emerges after the completely synchronized evolution of the ensemble in contrast to conventional chimeras which emerge as an intermediate state between completely incoherent and coherent states. We have also characterized the observed dynamical transitions using the strength of incoherence, probability distribution of correlation coefficient and the framework of master stability function.

Systems that become $\cal{PT}$ symmetric through interaction

In this article, we consider an interesting class of optical and other systems in which the interaction or coupling makes the systems to be $\cal{PT}$-symmetric. We aim to compare their dynamical behaviors with that of the usual $\cal{PT}$ symmetric systems with intrinsic loss-gain terms. In particular, we focus on the interesting non-reciprocal nature of the $\cal{PT}$ symmetric systems which has a promising application in optical diodes and optical isolators. We check whether the non-reciprocal nature is common to all $\cal{PT}$ symmetric systems and, if not, what are the situations under which it can be observed. Due to the recent interest in studying spontaneous symmetry breaking in coupled waveguide systems, we here present such symmetry breaking bifurcations in certain reciprocal and non-reciprocal $\cal{PT}$ symmetric systems.

The inverse problem of a mixed Liénard type nonlinear oscillator equation from symmetry perspective

In this paper, we discuss the inverse problem for a mixed Liénard type nonlinear oscillator equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}^2+g(x)\dot{x}+h(x)=0$, where $f(x),\,g(x)$ and $h(x)$ are arbitrary functions of $x$. Very recently, we have reported the Lie point symmetries of this equation. By exploiting the interconnection between Jacobi last multiplier, Lie point symmetries and Prelle-Singer procedure we construct a time independent integral for the case exhibiting maximal symmetry from which we identify the associated conservative non-standard Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions. The classical dynamics of the nonlinear oscillator is also discussed and certain special properties including isochronous oscillations are brought out.

We identify a generic class of two dimensional nonstandard Hamiltonian systems which exhibit isochronous behaviour. This class of systems belongs to the two dimensional mixed Liénard- type equations and is obtained by generalizing the scalar modified Emden equation (MEE) to two dimensions. We show that the generalized class of equations admits a Hamiltonian description and exhibits periodic and quasi-periodic oscillations for suitable choice of parameters and also $\emph PT$ symmetric property.

Bi-$\cal{PT}$ symmetry in nonlinearly damped dynamical systems and tailoring $\cal{PT}$ regions with position dependent loss-gain profiles

We investigate the remarkable role of position dependent damping in determining the parametric regions of symmetry breaking in nonlinear $\cal{PT}$-symmetric systems. We illustrate the nature of $\cal{PT}$-symmetry preservation and breaking with reference to a remarkable integrable scalar nonlinear system. In the two dimensional cases of such position dependent damped systems, we unveil the existence of a class of novel bi-$\cal{PT}$-symmetric systems which have two fold $\cal{PT}$ symmetries. We analyze the dynamics of these systems and show how symmetry breaking occurs, that is whether the symmetry breaking of the two $\cal{PT}$ symmetries occurs in pair or occurs one by one. The addition of linear damping in these nonlinearly damped systems induces competition between the two types of damping. This competition results in a $\cal{PT}$ phase transition in which the $\cal{PT}$ symmetry is broken for lower loss/gain strength and is restored by increasing the loss/gain strength. We also show that by properly designing the form of the position dependent damping, we can tailor the $\cal{PT}$-symmetric regions of the system.

Chimera states in bursting neurons

We study the existence of chimera states in pulse-coupled networks of bursting Hindmarsh-Rose neurons with nonlocal, global and local (nearest neighbor) couplings. Through a linear stability analysis, we discuss the behavior of stability function in the incoherent (i.e. disorder), coherent, chimera and multi-chimera states. Surprisingly, we find that chimera and multi-chimera states occur even using local nearest neighbor interaction in a network of identical bursting neurons alone. This is in contrast with the existence of chimera states in populations of nonlocally or globally coupled oscillators. A chemical synaptic coupling function is used which plays a key role in the emergence of chimera states in bursting neurons. Existence of chimera, multi-chimera, coherent and disordered states are confirmed by means of the recently introduced statistical measures and mean phase velocity.

Effect of asymmetry parameter on the dynamical states of nonlocally coupled nonlinear oscillators

We show that coexisting domains of coherent and incoherent oscillations can be induced in an ensemble of any identical nonlinear dynamical systems using the nonlocal rotational matrix coupling with an asymmetry parameter. Further, chimera is shown to emerge in a wide range of the asymmetry parameter in contrast to near $\fracπ{2}$ values of it employed in the earlier works. We have also corroborated our results using the strength of incoherence in the frequency domain ($S_ω$) and in the amplitude domain ($S$) thereby distinguishing the frequency and amplitude chimeras. The robust nature of the asymmetry parameter in inducing chimeras in any generic dynamical system is established using ensembles of identical Rössler oscillators, Lorenz systems, and Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons in their chaotic regimes.

Emergence of coexisting coherence and incoherence by an external forcing

A common external forcing can cause a saddle-node bifurcation in an ensemble of identical Duffing oscillators by breaking the symmetry of the individual bistable (double-well) unit. The strength of the forcing determines the separation between the saddle and node, which in turn dictates different dynamical transitions depending on the distribution of the initial states of the oscillators. In particular, chimera-like states appear in the vicinity of the saddle-node bifurcation for which theoretical explanation is provided from the stability of slow-scale dynamics of the original system of equations. Further, as a consequence, it is shown that even a linear nearest neighbor coupling can lead to the manifestation of the chimera states in an ensemble of identical Duffing oscillators in the presence of the common external forcing.

Explicit construction of single input - single output logic gates from three soliton solution of Manakov system

We construct single input logic gates using the energy sharing collisions of a minimal number of (three) bright optical solitons associated with the three soliton solution of the integrable Manakov system. As computation requires state changes to represent binary logic, here we make use of the state change of a particular soliton during its sequential collision with other two solitons for constructing single input gates. As a consequence, we clearly demonstrate the construction of various one-input logic gates such as COPY gate, NOT gate and ONE gate using energy sharing three soliton collision of Manakov system. This type of realization of logic gates just from a three soliton collision (pair-wise interaction) is clearly distinct from the earlier studies which require separate collisions of four solitons.

Feedback as a mechanism for the resurrection of oscillations from death state

The quenching of oscillations in interacting systems leads to several unwanted situations, which necessitate a suitable remedy to overcome the quenching. In this connection, this work addresses a mechanism that can resurrect oscillations in a typical situation. Through both numerical and analytical studies, we show the candidate which is capable of resurrecting oscillations is nothing but the feedback, the one which is profoundly used in dynamical control and in bio-therapies. Even in the case of a rather general system, we demonstrate analytically the applicability of the technique over one of the oscillation quenched states called amplitude death state. We also discuss some of the features of this mechanism such as adaptability of the technique with the feedback of only a few of the oscillators.

Impact of symmetry breaking in networks of globally coupled oscillators

We analyze the consequences of symmetry breaking in the coupling in a network of globally coupled identical Stuart-Landau oscillators. We observe that symmetry breaking leads to increased disorderliness in the dynamical behavior of oscillatory states and consequently results in a rich variety of dynamical states. Depending on the strength of the nonisochronicity parameter, we find various dynamical states such as amplitude chimera, amplitude cluster, frequency chimera and frequency cluster states. In addition we also find disparate transition routes to recently observed chimera death state in the presence of symmetry breaking even with global coupling. We also analytically verify the chimera death region which corroborates the numerical results. The above results are compared with that of the symmetry preserving case as well.

Interconnections between various analytic approaches applicable to third-order nonlinear differential equations

We unearth the interconnection between various analytical methods which are widely used in the current literature to identify integrable nonlinear dynamical systems described by third-order nonlinear ordinary differentiable equations (ODEs). We establish an important interconnection between extended Prelle-Singer procedure and λ-symmetries approach applicable to third-order ODEs to bring out the various linkages associated with these different techniques. By establishing this interconnection we demonstrate that given any one of the quantities as a starting point in the family consisting of Jacobi last multipliers, Darboux polynomials, Lie point symmetries, adjoint-symmetries, λ-symmetries, integrating factors and null forms one can derive the rest of the quantities in this family in a straightforward and unambiguous manner. We also illustrate our findings with three specific examples.

Order preserving contact transformations and dynamical symmetries of scalar and coupled Riccati and Abel chains

We identify contact transformations which linearize the given equations in the Riccati and Abel chains of nonlinear scalar and coupled ordinary differential equations to the same order. The identified contact transformations are not of Cole-Hopf type and are \emph {new} to the literature. The linearization of Abel chain of equations is also demonstrated explicitly for the first time. The contact transformations can be utilized to derive dynamical symmetries of the associated nonlinear ODEs. The wider applicability of identifying this type of contact transformations and the method of deriving dynamical symmetries by using them is illustrated through two dimensional generalizations of the Riccati and Abel chains as well.

Dark solitons, Breathers and Rogue Wave Solutions of the Coupled Generalized Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We construct dark-dark solitons, general breather (GB), Akhmediev breather (AB), Ma soliton (MS) and rogue wave (RW) solutions of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (CGNLS) equation. While the dark-dark solitons are captured in the defocusing regime of CGNLS system, the other solutions, namely GB, AB, MS and RW, are identified in the focusing regime. We also analyze the structures of GB, AB, MS and RW profiles with respect to the four-wave mixing parameter. We show that when we increase the value of the real part of the four wave mixing parameter, the number of peaks in the breather profile increases and the width of each peak gets shrunk. Interestingly the direction of this profile also changes due to this change. As far as the RW profile is concerned the width of the peak becomes very thin when we increase the value of this parameter. Further, we consider RW solution as the starting point and derive AB, MS and GB in the reverse direction and show that the solutions obtained in both the directions match with each other. In the course of the reverse analysis we also demonstrate how to capture the RW solutions directly from AB and MS.

Dynamic environment coupling induce synchronized states in coupled time-delayed electronic circuits

We experimentally demonstrate the occurrence of various synchronized states in coupled piece-wise linear time-delayed electronic circuits using dynamic environment coupling where the environment has its own intrinsic dynamics via feedback from the circuits. We carry out these experiments in two different coupling configurations, namely mutual and subsystem coupling configurations. Depending upon the coupling strength and the nature of feedback, we observe a transition from nonsynchronization to complete synchronization via phase synchronization and from nonsynchronization to inverse synchronization via inverse-phase synchronization between the circuits in hyperchaotic regime. Snapshots of the time evolution, phase projection plots and localized sets of the circuits as observed experimentally from the oscilloscope, along with supporting numerical simulations confirm the existence of different synchronized states. Further, the transition to different synchronized states can be verified from the changes in the largest Lyapunov exponents, Correlation of Probability of Recurrence and Correlation Coefficient as a function of the coupling strength. We present a detailed linear stability analysis and obtain conditions for different synchronized states.

Factorization technique and isochronous condition for coupled quadratic and mixed Liénard-type nonlinear systems

In this paper, we discuss a systematic and self consistent procedure to factorize a rather general class of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), namely coupled quadratic and mixed Liénard type equations, which include various physical and mathematical models. The procedure is broadly divided into two parts. In the first part, we consider a general factorized form for the equation under consideration in terms of some unknown functions and identify the determining equations for them. In the second part, we systematically solve the determining equations and identify the compatible factorizing form for this class of equations. In addition, we also discuss the problem of identification of isochronous dynamical systems belonging to the above class of equations. In particular, we deduce an isochronocity condition for the coupled quadratic Liénard equation. We also present specific examples of physical interest.

Integrable Motion of Curves in Self-Consistent Potentials : Relation to Spin Systems and Soliton Equations

Motion of curves and surfaces in $\R^3$ lead to nonlinear evolution equations which are often integrable. They are also intimately connected to the dynamics of spin chains in the continuum limit and integrable soliton systems through geometric and gauge symmetric connections/equivalence. Here we point out the fact that a more general situation in which the curves evolve in the presence of additional self consistent vector potentials can lead to interesting generalized spin systems with self consistent potentials or soliton equations with self consistent potentials. We obtain the general form of the evolution equations of underlying curves and report specific examples of generalized spin chains and soliton equations. These include principal chiral model and various Myrzakulov spin equations in (1+1) dimensions and their geometrically equivalent generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) family of equations, including Hirota-Maxwell-Bloch equations, all in the presence of self consistent potential fields. Our results show that when we change a parameter appearing in the time-independent or time-dependent trap the second and third-order rogue waves transform into the first-order like rogue waves. We also analyze the density profiles of breather solutions. Here also we show that the shapes of the breathers change when we tune the strength of trap parameter. Our results may help to manage rogue waves experimentally in a BEC system.

Mechanism for intensity induced chimera states in globally coupled oscillators

We identify the mechanism behind the existence of intensity induced chimera states in globally coupled oscillators. We find that the effect of intensity in the system is to cause multistability by increasing the number of fixed points. This in turn increases the number of multistable attractors and we find that their stability is determined by the strength of coupling . This causes the coexistence of different collective states in the system depending upon the initial state. We demonstrate that intensity induced chimera is generic to both periodic and chaotic systems. We have discussed possible applications of our results to real world systems like the brain and spin torque nano oscillators.

Mixed solitons in (2+1) dimensional multicomponent long-wave--short-wave system

We derive a (2+1)-dimensional multicomponent long-wave$-$short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system as the evolution equation for propagation of $N$-dispersive waves in weak Kerr type nonlinear medium in the small amplitude limit. The mixed (bright-dark) type soliton solutions of a particular (2+1)-dimensional multicomponent LSRI system, deduced from the general multicomponent higher dimensional LSRI system, are obtained by applying the Hirota's bilinearization method. Particularly, we show that the solitons in the LSRI system with two short-wave components behave like scalar solitons. We point out that for $N$-component LSRI system with $N>3$, if the bright solitons appear in atleast two components, interesting collision behaviour takes place resulting in energy exchange among the bright solitons. However the dark solitons undergo standard elastic collision accompanied by a position-shift and a phase-shift. Our analysis on the mixed bound solitons shows that the additional degree of freedom which arises due to the higher dimensional nature of the system results in a wide range of parameters for which the soliton collision can take place.

We consider a general multicomponent (2+1)-dimensional long-wave--short-wave resonance interaction (LSRI) system with arbitrary nonlinearity coefficients, which describes the nonlinear resonance interaction of multiple short waves with a long-wave in two spatial dimensions. The general multicomponent LSRI system is shown to be integrable by performing the Painlevé analysis. Then we construct the exact bright multi-soliton solutions by applying the Hirota's bilinearization method and study the propagation and collision dynamics of bright solitons in detail. Particularly, we investigate the head-on and overtaking collisions of bright solitons and explore two types of energy-sharing collisions as well as standard elastic collision. We have also corroborated the obtained analytical one-soliton solution by direct numerical simulation. Also, we discuss the formation and dynamics of resonant solitons. On the complete Lie point symmetries classification of the mixed quadratic-linear Li$\acute{\textbf{e}}$nard type equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}^2+g(x)\dot{x}+h(x)=0$

In this paper we develop a systematic and self consistent procedure based on a set of compatibility conditions for identifying all maximal (eight parameter) and non-maximal (one and two parameter) symmetry groups associated with the mixed quadratic-linear Li$\acute{e}$nard type equation, $\ddot {x} + f(x){\dot {x}}^{2} + g(x)\dot{x}+h(x)= 0$, where $f(x),\,g(x)$ and $h(x)$ are arbitrary functions of $x$. With the help of this procedure we show that a symmetry function $b(t)$ is zero for non-maximal cases whereas it is not so for the maximal case. On the basis of this result the symmetry analysis gets divided into two cases, $(i)$ the maximal symmetry group $(b\neq0)$ and $(ii)$ non-maximal symmetry groups $(b=0)$. We then identify the most general form of the mixed-quadratic linear Li$\acute{e}$nard type equation in each of these cases. In the case of eight parameter symmetry group, the identified general equation becomes linearizable. We present a specific example of physical interest. In the case of non-maximal symmetry groups the identified equations are all integrable. The integrability of all the equations is proved either by providing the general solution or by constructing time independent Hamiltonians. We also analyse the underlying equivalence transformations.

Removal of ordering ambiguity for a class of position dependent mass quantum systems with an application to the quadratic Liénard type nonlinear oscillators

We consider the problem of removal of ordering ambiguity in position dependent mass quantum systems characterized by a generalized position dependent mass Hamiltonian which generalizes a number of Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian ordered forms of the Hamiltonian. We implement point canonical transformation method to map one-dimensional time-independent position dependent mass Schr$ö$dinger equation endowed with potentials onto constant mass counterparts which are considered to be exactly solvable. We observe that a class of mass functions and the corresponding potentials give rise to solutions that do not depend on any particular ordering, leading to the removal of ambiguity in it. In this case, it is imperative that the ordering is Hermitian. For non-Hermitian ordering we show that the class of systems can also be exactly solvable and are also shown to be iso-spectral using suitable similarity transformations. We also discuss the normalization of the eigenfunctions obtained from both Hermitian and non-Hermitian orderings. We illustrate the technique with the quadratic Li$é$nard type nonlinear oscillators, which admit position dependent mass Hamiltonians.

Adaptive coupling induced multi-stable states in complex networks

Adaptive coupling, where the coupling is dynamical and depends on the behaviour of the oscillators in a complex system, is one of the most crucial factors to control the dynamics and streamline various processes in complex networks. In this paper, we have demonstrated the occurrence of multi-stable states in a system of identical phase oscillators that are dynamically coupled. We find that the multi-stable state is comprised of a two cluster synchronization state where the clusters are in anti-phase relationship with each other and a desynchronization state. We also find that the phase relationship between the oscillators is asymptotically stable irrespective of whether there is synchronization or desynchronization in the system. The time scale of the coupling affects the size of the clusters in the two cluster state. We also investigate the effect of both the coupling asymmetry and plasticity asymmetry on the multi-stable states. In the absence of coupling asymmetry, increasing the plasticity asymmetry causes the system to go from a two clustered state to a desynchronization state and then to a two clustered state. Further, the coupling asymmetry, if present, also affects this transition. We also analytically find the occurrence of the above mentioned multi-stable-desynchronization-multi-stable state transition. A brief discussion on the phase evolution of nonidentical oscillators is also provided. Our analytical results are in good agreement with our numerical observations.

Akhmediev breathers, Ma solitons and general breathers from rogue waves: A case study in Manakov system

We present explicit forms of general breather (GB), Akhmediev breather (AB), Ma soliton (MS) and rogue wave (RW) solutions of the two component nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, namely Manakov equation. We derive these solutions through two different routes. In the forward route we first construct a suitable periodic envelope soliton solution to this model from which we derive GB, AB, MS and RW solutions. We then consider the RW solution as the starting point and derive AB, MS and GB in the reverse direction. The second approach has not been illustrated so far for the two component NLS equation. Our results show that the above rational solutions of the Manakov system can be derived from the standard scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a modified nonlinearity parameter. Through this two way approach we establish a broader understanding of these rational solutions which will be of interest in a variety of situations.

Applicability of 0-1 Test for Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

We show that the recently introduced 0-1 test can successfully distinguish between strange nonchaotic attractors(SNAs) and periodic/quasiperiodic/chaotic attractors, by suitably choosing the arbitrary parameter associated with the translation variables in terms of the golden mean number which avoids resonance with the quasiperiodic force. We further characterize the transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic motion via SNAs interms of the 0-1 test. We demonstrate that the test helps to detect different dynamical transitions to SNAs from quasiperiodic attractor or the transitions from SNAs to chaos. Specific systems include Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillators, modified Emden equations, isochronous oscillators and generalizations. Nonstandard Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of some of these systems are also briefly touched upon. Nonlocal transformations and linearization aspects are also discussed.

Global generalized synchronization in networks of different time-delay systems

We show that global generalized synchronization (GS) exists in structurally different time-delay systems, even with different orders, with quite different fractal (Kaplan-Yorke) dimensions, which emerges via partial GS in symmetrically coupled regular networks. We find that there exists a smooth transformation in such systems, which maps them to a common GS manifold as corroborated by their maximal transverse Lyapunov exponent. In addition, an analytical stability condition using the Krasvoskii-Lyapunov theory is deduced. This phenomenon of GS in strongly distinct systems opens a new way for an effective control of pathological synchronous activity by means of extremely small perturbations to appropriate variables in the synchronization manifold.

Nonsmooth Bifurcations, Transient Hyperchaos and Hyperchaotic Beats in a Memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua Circuit

In this paper, a memristive Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua (MLC) circuit is built by replacing the nonlinear element of an ordinary MLC circuit, namely the Chua's diode, with a three segment piecewise linear active flux controlled memristor. The bistability nature of the memristor introduces two discontinuty boundaries or switching manifolds in the circuit topology. As a result, the circuit becomes a piecewise smooth system of second order. Grazing bifurcations, which are essentially a form of discontinuity induced non-smooth bifurcations, occur at these boundaries and govern the dynamics of the circuit. While the interaction of the memristor aided self oscillations of the circuit and the external sinusoidal forcing result in the phenomenon of beats occurring in the circuit, grazing bifurcations endow them with chaotic and hyper chaotic nature. In addition the circuit admits a codimension-5 bifurcation and transient hyper chaos. Grazing bifurcations as well as other behaviors have been analyzed numerically using time series plots, phase portraits, bifurcation diagram, power spectra and Lyapunov spectrum, as well as the recent 0-1 K test for chaos, obtained after constructing a proper Zero Time Discontinuity Map (ZDM) and Poincare Discontinuity Map (PDM) analytically. Multisim simulations using a model of piecewise linear memristor have also been used to confirm some of the behaviors.

Synchronization of an array of spin torque nano oscillators in periodic applied external magnetic field

Considering an array of spin torque transfer nano oscillators (STNOs), we have investigated the synchronization property of the system under the action of a common periodically driven applied external magnetic field by numerically analyzing the underlying system of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski (LLGS) equations for the macro-spin variables. We find the novel result that the applied external magnetic field can act as a medium to induce synchronization of periodic oscillations, both in-phase and anti-phase, even without coupling through spin current, thereby leading to the exciting possibility of enhancement of microwave power in a straightforward way.

Zero-lag synchronization in coupled time-delayed piecewise linear electronic circuits

We investigate and report an experimental confirmation of zero-lag synchronization (ZLS) in a system of three coupled time-delayed piecewise linear electronic circuits via dynamical relaying with different coupling configurations, namely mutual and subsystem coupling configurations. We have observed that when there is a feedback between the central unit (relay unit) and at least one of the outer units, ZLS occurs in the two outer units whereas the central and outer units exhibit inverse phase synchronization (IPS). We find that in the case of mutual coupling configuration ZLS occurs both in periodic and hyperchaotic regimes, while in the subsystem coupling configuration it occurs only in the hyperchaotic regime. Snapshots of the time evolution of outer circuits as observed from the oscilloscope confirm the occurrence of ZLS experimentally. The quality of ZLS is numerically verified by correlation coefficient and similarity function measures. Further, the transition to ZLS is verified from the changes in the largest Lyapunov exponents and the correlation coefficient as a function of the coupling strength. IPS is experimentally confirmed using time series plots and also can be visualized using the concept of localized sets which are also corroborated by numerical simulations. In addition, we have calculated the correlation of probability of recurrence to quantify the phase coherence. We have also analytically derived a sufficient condition for the stability of ZLS using the Krasovskii-Lyapunov theory.

A class of solvable coupled nonlinear oscillators with amplitude independent frequencies

Existence of amplitude independent frequencies of oscillation is an unusual property for a nonlinear oscillator. We find that a class of N coupled nonlinear Liénard type oscillators exhibit this interesting property. We show that a specific subset can be explicitly solved from which we demonstrate the existence of periodic and quasiperiodic solutions. Another set of $N$-coupled nonlinear oscillators, possessing the amplitude independent nature of frequencies, is almost integrable in the sense that the system can be reduced to a single nonautonomous first order scalar differential equation which can be easily integrated numerically.

A systematic method of finding linearizing transformations for nonlinear ordinary differential equations: I. Scalar case

In this set of papers we formulate a stand alone method to derive maximal number of linearizing transformations for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of any order including coupled ones from a knowledge of fewer number of integrals of motion. The proposed algorithm is simple, straightforward and efficient and helps to unearth several new types of linearizing transformations besides the known ones in the literature. To make our studies systematic we divide our analysis into two parts. In the first part we confine our investigations to the scalar ODEs and in the second part we focuss our attention on a system of two coupled second order ODEs. In the case of scalar ODEs, we consider second and third order nonlinear ODEs in detail and discuss the method of deriving maximal number of linearizing transformations irrespective of whether it is local or nonlocal type and illustrate the underlying theory with suitable examples. As a by-product of this investigation we unearth a new type of linearizing transformation in third order nonlinear ODEs. Finally the study is extended to the case of general scalar ODEs. We then move on to the study of two coupled second order nonlinear ODEs in the next part and show that the algorithm brings out a wide variety of linearization transformations. The extraction of maximal number of linearizing transformations in every case is illustrated with suitable examples.

A systematic method of finding linearizing transformations for nonlinear ordinary differential equations: II. Extension to coupled ODEs

In this second paper on the method of deriving linearizing transformations for nonlinear ODEs, we extend the method to a set of two coupled second order nonlinear ODEs. We show that besides the conventional point, Sundman and generalized linearizing transformations one can also find a large class of mixed or hybrid type linearizing transformations like point-Sundman, point-generalized linearizing transformation and Sundman-generalized linearizing transformation in coupled second order ODEs using the integrals of motion. We propose suitable algorithms to identify all these transformations (with maximal in number) in a straightforward manner. We illustrate the method of deriving each one of the linearizing transformations with a suitable example.

Anticipating, Complete and Lag Synchronizations in RC Phase-Shift Network Based Coupled Chua's Circuits without Delay

We construct a new RC phase shift network based Chua's circuit, which exhibits a period-doubling bifurcation route to chaos. Using coupled versions of such a phase-shift network based Chua's oscillators, we describe a new method for achieving complete synchronization (CS), approximate lag synchronization (LS) and approximate anticipating synchronization (AS) without delay or parameter mismatch. Employing the Pecora and Carroll approach, chaos synchronization is achieved in coupled chaotic oscillators, where the drive system variables control the response system. As a result, AS or LS or CS is demonstrated without using a variable delay line both experimentally and numerically.

Exact quantization of a PT-symmetric (reversible) Liénard-type nonlinear oscillator

We carry out an exact quantization of a PT symmetric (reversible) Liénard type one dimensional nonlinear oscillator both semiclassically and quantum mechanically. The associated time independent classical Hamiltonian is of non-standard type and is invariant under a combined coordinate reflection and time reversal transformation. We use von Roos symmetric ordering procedure to write down the appropriate quantum Hamiltonian. While the quantum problem cannot be tackled in coordinate space, we show how the problem can be successfully solved in momentum space by solving the underlying Schrödinger equation therein. We obtain explicitly the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (in momentum space) and deduce the remarkable result that the spectrum agrees exactly with that of the linear harmonic oscillator, which is also confirmed by a semiclassical modified Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule, while the eigenfunctions are completely different.

Exact solutions of coupled Liénard-type nonlinear systems using factorization technique

General solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are in general difficult to find although powerful integrability techniques exist in the literature for this purpose. It has been shown that in some scalar cases particular solutions may be found with little effort if it is possible to factorize the equation in terms of first order differential operators. In our present study we use this factorization technique to address the problem of finding solutions of a system of general two-coupled Liénard type nonlinear differential equations. We describe a generic algorithm to identify specific classes of Liénard type systems for which solutions may be found. We demonstrate this method by identifying a class of two-coupled equations for which the particular solution can be found by solving a Bernoulli equation. This class of equations include coupled generalization of the modified Emden equation. We further deduce the general solution of a class of coupled ordinary differential equations using the factorization procedure discussed in this manuscript.

Global and Partial Phase Synchronizations in Arrays of Piecewise Linear Time-Delay Systems

In this paper, we report the identification of global and partial phase synchronizations in linear arrays of unidirectionally coupled piecewise linear time-delay systems with two different coupling configurations. In particular, in a linear array with open end boundary conditions, global phase synchronization (GPS) is achieved by a sequential synchronization as a function of the coupling strength (a second order transition). Further, the asynchronous ones in the array with respect to the main sequentially synchronized cluster organize themselves to form clusters before they achieve synchronization with the main cluster. On the other hand, in a linear array with closed end boundary conditions (ring topology), partial phase synchronization (PPS) is achieved by forming different groups of phase synchronized clusters above some threshold value of the coupling strength (a first order transition) where they continue to be in a stable PPS state. We confirm the occurrence of both global and partial phase synchronizations in two different piecewise linear time-delay systems using various numerical methods.

Method of generating $N$-dimensional isochronous nonsingular Hamiltonian systems

In this paper we develop a straightforward procedure to construct higher dimensional isochronous Hamiltonian systems. We first show that a class of singular Hamiltonian systems obtained through the $Ω$-modified procedure is equivalent to constrained Newtonian systems. Even though such systems admit isochronous oscillations, they are effectively one degree of freedom systems due to the constraints. Then we generalize the procedure in terms of $Ω_i$-modified Hamiltonians and identify suitable canonically conjugate coordinates such that the constructed $Ω_i$-modified Hamiltonian is \emph{nonsingular} and the corresponding Newton's equation of motion is constraint free. The procedure is first illustrated for two dimensional systems and subsequently extended to $N$-dimensional systems. The general solution of these systems are obtained by integrating the underlying equations and is shown to admit isochronous as well as amplitude independent quasiperiodic solutions depending on the choice of parameters.

Transition to complete synchronization and global intermittent synchronization in an array of time-delay systems

We report the nature of transitions from nonsynchronous to complete synchronization (CS) state in arrays of time-delay systems, where the systems are coupled with instantaneous diffusive coupling. We demonstrate that the transition to CS occurs distinctly for different coupling configurations. In particular, for unidirectional coupling, locally (microscopically) synchronization transition occurs in a very narrow range of coupling strength but for a global one (macroscopically) it occurs sequentially in a broad range of coupling strength preceded by an intermittent synchronization. On the other hand, in the case of mutual coupling a very large value of coupling strength is required for local synchronization and, consequently, all the local subsystems synchronize immediately for the same value of the coupling strength and hence globally synchronization also occurs in a narrow range of the coupling strength. In the transition regime, we observe a new type of synchronization transition where long intervals of high quality synchronization which are interrupted at irregular times by intermittent chaotic bursts simultaneously in all the systems, which we designate as global intermittent synchronization (GIS). We also relate our synchronization transition results to the above specific types using unstable periodic orbit theory. The above studies are carried out in a well known piecewise linear time-delay system.

A general coupled nonlinear oscillator model for event-related (de)synchronization

Changes in the level of synchronization and desynchronization in coupled oscillator systems due to an external stimulus is called event related synchronization or desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Such changes occur in real life systems where the collective activity of the entities of a coupled system is affected by some external influence. In order to understand the role played by the external influence in the occurrence of ERD and ERS, we study a system of coupled nonlinear oscillators in the presence of an external stimulus signal. We find that the phenomena of ERS and ERD are generic and occur in all types of coupled oscillator systems. We also find that the same external stimulus signal can cause ERS and ERD depending upon the strength of the signal. We identify the stability of the ERS and ERD states and also find analytical and numerical boundaries between the different synchronization regimes involved in the occurrence of ERD and ERS.

Delay-enhanced coherent chaotic oscillations in networks with large disorders

We study the effect of coupling delay in a regular network with a ring topology and in a more complex network with an all-to-all (global) topology in the presence of impurities (disorder). We find that the coupling delay is capable of inducing phase-coherent chaotic oscillations in both types of networks, thereby enhancing the spatiotemporal complexity even in the presence of 50% of symmetric disorders of both fixed and random types. Furthermore, the coupling delay increases the robustness of the networks up to 70% of disorders, thereby preventing the network from acquiring periodic oscillations to foster disorder-induced spatiotemporal order. We also confirm the enhancement of coherent chaotic oscillations using snapshots of the phases and values of the associated Kuramoto order parameter. We also explain a possible mechanism for the phenomenon of delay-induced coherent chaotic oscillations despite the presence of large disorders and discuss its applications.

Mass synchronization: Occurrence and its control with possible applications to brain dynamics

Occurrence of strong or mass synchronization of a large number of neuronal populations in the brain characterizes its pathological states. In order to establish an understanding of the mechanism underlying such pathological synchronization we present a model of coupled populations of phase oscillators representing the interacting neuronal populations. Through numerical analysis, we discuss the occurrence of mass synchronization in the model, where a source population which gets strongly synchronized drives the target populations onto mass synchronization. We hypothesize and identify a possible cause for the occurrence of such a synchronization, which is so far unknown: Pathological synchronization is caused not just because of the increase in the strength of coupling between the populations but also because of the strength of the strong synchronization of the drive population. We propose a demand-controlled method to control this pathological synchronization by providing a delayed feedback where the strength and frequency of the synchronization determines the strength and the time delay of the feedback. We provide an analytical explanation for the occurrence of pathological synchronization and its control in the thermodynamic limit.

Nonlocal symmetries of a class of scalar and coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations of any order

In this paper we devise a systematic procedure to obtain nonlocal symmetries of a class of scalar nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of arbitrary order related to linear ODEs through nonlocal relations. The procedure makes use of the Lie point symmetries of the linear ODEs and the nonlocal connection to deduce the nonlocal symmetries of the corresponding nonlinear ODEs. Using these nonlocal symmetries we obtain reduction transformations and reduced equations to specific examples. We find the reduced equations can be explicitly integrated to deduce the general solutions for these cases. We also extend this procedure to coupled higher order nonlinear ODEs with specific reference to second order nonlinear ODEs.

The Fascinating World of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert Equation: An Overview

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation is a fascinating nonlinear evolution equation both from mathematical and physical points of view. It is related to the dynamics of several important physical systems such as ferromagnets, vortex filaments, moving space curves, etc. and has intimate connections with many of the well known integrable soliton equations, including nonlinear Schrödinger and sine-Gordon equations. It can admit very many dynamical structures including spin waves, elliptic function waves, solitons, dromions, vortices, spatio-temporal patterns, chaos, etc. depending on the physical and spin dimensions and the nature of interactions. An exciting recent development is that the spin torque effect in nanoferromagnets is described by a generalization of the LLG equation which forms a basic dynamical equation in the field of spintronics. This article will briefly review these developments as a tribute to Robin Bullough who was a great admirer of the LLG equation.

A nonlocal connection between certain linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations : Extension to coupled equations

Identifying integrable coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of dissipative type and deducing their general solutions are some of the challenging tasks in nonlinear dynamics. In this paper we undertake these problems and unearth two classes of integrable coupled nonlinear ODEs of arbitrary order. To achieve these goals we introduce suitable nonlocal transformations in certain linear ODEs and generate the coupled nonlinear ODEs. In particular, we show that the problem of solving these classes of coupled nonlinear ODEs of any order, effectively reduces to solving a single first order nonlinear ODE. We then describe a procedure to derive explicit general solutions for the identified integrable coupled ODEs, when the above mentioned first order nonlinear ODE reduces to a Bernoulli equation. The equations which we generate and solve include the two coupled versions of modified Emden equations (in second order), coupled versions of Chazy equations (in third order) and their variants, higher dimensional coupled Ricatti and Abel chains as well as a new integrable chain and higher order equations.

Bright and dark solitons in a quasi 1D Bose-Einstein condensates modelled by 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent parameters

We investigate the exact bright and dark solitary wave solutions of an effective one dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by assuming that the interaction energy is much less than the kinetic energy in the transverse direction. In particular, following the earlier works in the literature Pérez-García et al. [Physica D 221 (2006) 31], Serkin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 074102], Gürses [arXiv:0704.2435] and Kundu [Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 015601], we point out that the effective 1D equation res ulting from the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be transformed into the stand ard soliton (bright/dark) possessing, completely integrable 1D nonlinear Schrö dinger (NLS) equation by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave function. We consider both confining and expulsive harmonic trap potentials separately and treat the atomic scattering length, gain/loss term and trap frequency as the experimental control parameters by modulating them as a function of time. In the case when the trap frequency is kept constant, we show the existence of different kinds of soliton solutions, such as the periodic oscillating solitons, collapse and revival of condensate, snake-like solitons, stable solitons, soliton growth and decay and formation of two-soliton like bound state, as the atomic scattering length and gain/loss term are varied. However when the trap frequency is also modulated, we show the phenomena of collapse and revival of two-soliton like bound state formation of the condensate for double modulated periodic potential and bright and dark solitons for step-wise modulated potentials.

Chimera and globally clustered chimera: Impact of time delay

Following a short report of our preliminary results [Phys. Rev. E 79, 055203(R) (2009)], we present a more detailed study of the effects of coupling delay in diffusively coupled phase oscillator populations. We find that coupling delay induces chimera and globally clustered chimera (GCC) states in delay coupled populations. We show the existence of multi-clustered states that act as link between the chimera and the GCC states. A stable GCC state goes through a variety of GCC states, namely periodic, aperiodic, long-- and short--period breathers and becomes unstable GCC leading to global synchronization in the system, on increasing time delay. We provide numerical evidence and theoretical explanations for the above results and discuss possible applications of the observed phenomena.

Coherently coupled bright optical solitons and their collisions

We obtain explicit bright one- and two-soliton solutions of the integrable case of the coherently coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations by applying a non-standard form of the Hirota's direct method. We find that the system admits both degenerate and non-degenerate solitons in which the latter can take single hump, double hump, and flat-top profiles. Our study on the collision dynamics of solitons in the integrable case shows that the collision among degenerate solitons and also the collision of non-degenerate solitons are always standard elastic collisions. But the collision of a degenerate soliton with a non-degenerate soliton induces switching in the latter leaving the former unaffected after collision, thereby showing a different mechanism from that of the Manakov system.

Design of time delayed chaotic circuit with threshold controller

A novel time delayed chaotic oscillator exhibiting mono- and double scroll complex chaotic attractors is designed. This circuit consists of only a few operational amplifiers and diodes and employs a threshold controller for flexibility. It efficiently implements a piecewise linear function. The control of piecewise linear function facilitates controlling the shape of the attractors. This is demonstrated by constructing the phase portraits of the attractors through numerical simulations and hardware experiments. Based on these studies, we find that this circuit can produce multi-scroll chaotic attractors by just introducing more number of threshold values.

Observation of chaotic beats in a driven memristive Chua's circuit

In this paper, a time varying resistive circuit realising the action of an active three segment piecewise linear flux controlled memristor is proposed. Using this as the nonlinearity, a driven Chua's circuit is implemented. The phenomenon of chaotic beats in this circuit is observed for a suitable choice of parameters. The memristor acts as a chaotically time varying resistor (CTVR), switching between a less conductive OFF state and a more conductive ON state. This chaotic switching is governed by the dynamics of the driven Chua's circuit of which the memristor is an integral part. The occurrence of beats is essentially due to the interaction of the memristor aided self oscillations of the circuit and the external driving sinusoidal forcing. Upon slight tuning/detuning of the frequencies of the memristor switching and that of the external force, constructive and destructive interferences occur leading to revivals and collapses in amplitudes of the circuit variables, which we refer as chaotic beats. Numerical simulations and Multisim modelling as well as statistical analyses have been carried out to observe as well as to understand and verify the mechanism leading to chaotic beats.

On certain new integrable second order nonlinear differential equations and their connection with two dimensional Lotka-Volterra system

In this paper, we consider a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation of the form $\ddot{x}+k_1\frac{\dot{x}^2}{x}+(k_2+k_3x)\dot{x}+k_4x^3+k_5x^2+k_6x=0$, where $k_i$'s, $i=1,2,...,6,$ are arbitrary parameters. By using the modified Prelle-Singer procedure, we identify five new integrable cases in this equation besides two known integrable cases, namely (i) $k_2=0, k_3=0$ and (ii) $k_1=0, k_2=0, k_5=0$. Among these five, four equations admit time dependent first integrals and the remaining one admits time independent first integral. From the time independent first integral, nonstandard Hamiltonian structure is deduced thereby proving the Liouville sense of integrability. In the case of time dependent integrals, we either explicitly integrate the system or transform to a time-independent case and deduce the underlying Hamiltonian structure. We also demonstrate that the above second order ordinary differential equation is intimately related to the two-dimensional Lotka-Volterra (LV) system. From the integrable parameters of above nonlinear equation and all the known integrable cases of the latter can be deduced thereby.

Scaling and synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators

Chaos synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators driven by an external identical oscillator is studied. Based on numerical simulations we show that by introducing additional couplings at $(mN_c+1)$-th oscillators in the ring, where $m$ is an integer and $N_c$ is the maximum number of synchronized oscillators in the ring with a single coupling, the maximum number of oscillators that can be synchronized can be increased considerably beyond the limit restricted by size instability. We also demonstrate that there exists an exponential relation between the number of oscillators that can support stable synchronization in the ring with the external drive and the critical coupling strength $ε_c$ with a scaling exponent $γ$. The critical coupling strength is calculated by numerically estimating the synchronization error and is also confirmed from the conditional Lyapunov exponents (CLEs) of the coupled systems. We find that the same scaling relation exists for $m$ couplings between the drive and the ring. Further, we have examined the robustness of the synchronous states against Gaussian white noise and found that the synchronization error exhibits a power-law decay as a function of the noise intensity indicating the existence of both noise-enhanced and noise-induced synchronizations depending on the value of the coupling strength $ε$. In addition, we have found that $ε_c$ shows an exponential decay as a function of the number of additional couplings. These results are demonstrated using the paradigmatic models of Rössler and Lorenz oscillators.

A Group Theoretical Identification of Integrable Cases of the Liénard Type Equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$ : Part I: Equations having Non-maximal Number of Lie point Symmetries

We carry out a detailed Lie point symmetry group classification of the Liénard type equation, $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$, where $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are arbitrary smooth functions of $x$. We divide our analysis into two parts. In the present first part we isolate equations that admit lesser parameter Lie point symmetries, namely, one, two and three parameter symmetries, and in the second part we identify equations that admit maximal (eight) parameter Lie-point symmetries. In the former case the invariant equations form a family of integrable equations and in the latter case they form a class of linearizable equations (under point transformations). Further, we prove the integrability of all of the equations obtained in the present paper through equivalence transformations either by providing the general solution or by constructing time independent Hamiltonians. Several of these equations are being identified for the first time from the group theoretical analysis.

A Group Theoretical Identification of Integrable Equations in the Liénard Type Equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$ : Part II: Equations having Maximal Lie Point Symmetries

In this second of the set of two papers on Lie symmetry analysis of a class of Liénard type equation of the form $\ddot {x} + f(x)\dot {x} + g(x)= 0$, where over dot denotes differentiation with respect to time and $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are smooth functions of their variables, we isolate the equations which possess maximal Lie point symmetries. It is well known that any second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which admits eight parameter Lie point symmetries is linearizable to free particle equation through point transformation. As a consequence all the identified equations turn out to be linearizable. We also show that one can get maximal Lie point symmetries for the above Liénard equation only when $f_{xx} =0$ (subscript denotes differentiation). In addition, we discuss the linearising transformations and solutions for all the nonlinear equations identified in this paper.

Bifurcation and chaos in spin-valve pillars in a periodic applied magnetic field

We study the bifurcation and chaos scenario of the macro-magnetization vector in a homogeneous nanoscale-ferromagnetic thin film of the type used in spin-valve pillars. The underlying dynamics is described by a generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. The LLG equation has an especially appealing form under a complex stereographic projection, wherein the qualitative equivalence of an applied field and a spin-current induced torque is transparent. Recently chaotic behavior of such a spin vector has been identified by Zhang and Li using a spin polarized current passing through the pillar of constant polarization direction and periodically varying magnitude, owing to the spin-transfer torque effect. In this paper we show that the same dynamical behavior can be achieved using a periodically varying applied magnetic field, in the presence of a constant DC magnetic field and constant spin current, which is technically much more feasible, and demonstrate numerically the chaotic dynamics in the system for an infinitely thin film. Further, it is noted that in the presence of a nonzero crystal anisotropy field chaotic dynamics occurs at much lower magnitudes of the spin-current and DC applied field.

Using the complex stereographic variable representation for the macrospin, from a study of the nonlinear dynamics underlying the generalized Landau-Lifshitz(LL) equation with Gilbert damping, we show that the spin-transfer torque is effectively equivalent to an applied magnetic field. We study the macrospin switching on a Stoner particle due to spin-transfer torque on application of a spin polarized current. We find that the switching due to spin-transfer torque is a more effective alternative to switching by an applied external field in the presence of damping. We demonstrate numerically that a spin-polarized current in the form of a short pulse can be effectively employed to achieve the desired macro-spin switching.

Bright-dark solitons and their collisions in mixed N-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Mixed type (bright-dark) soliton solutions of the integrable N-coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (CNLS) equations with mixed signs of focusing and defocusing type nonlinearity coefficients are obtained by using Hirota's bilinearization method. Generally, for the mixed N-CNLS equations the bright and dark solitons can be split up in $(N-1)$ ways. By analysing the collision dynamics of these coupled bright and dark solitons systematically we point out that for $N>2$, if the bright solitons appear in at least two components, non-trivial effects like onset of intensity redistribution, amplitude dependent phase-shift and change in relative separation distance take place in the bright solitons during collision. However their counterparts, the dark solitons, undergo elastic collision but experience the same amplitude dependent phase-shift as that of bright solitons. Thus in the mixed CNLS system there co-exist shape changing collision of bright solitons and elastic collision of dark solitons with amplitude dependent phase-shift, thereby influencing each other mutually in an intricate way.

A Simple and Unified Approach to Identify Integrable Nonlinear Oscillators and Systems

In this paper, we consider a generalized second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation of the form $\ddot{x}+(k_1x^q+k_2)\dot{x}+k_3x^{2q+1}+k_4x^{q+1}+λ_1x=0$, where $k_i$'s, $i=1,2,3,4$, $λ_1$ and $q$ are arbitrary parameters, which includes several physically important nonlinear oscillators such as the simple harmonic oscillator, anharmonic oscillator, force-free Helmholtz oscillator, force-free Duffing and Duffing-van der Pol oscillators, modified Emden type equation and its hierarchy, generalized Duffing-van der Pol oscillator equation hierarchy and so on and investigate the integrability properties of this rather general equation. We identify several new integrable cases for arbitrary value of the exponent $q, q\in R$. The $q=1$ and $q=2$ cases are analyzed in detail and the results are generalized to arbitrary $q$. Our results show that many classical integrable nonlinear oscillators can be derived as sub-cases of our results and significantly enlarge the list of integrable equations that exist in the contemporary literature. To explore the above underlying results we use the recently introduced generalized extended Prelle-Singer procedure applicable to second order ODEs. As an added advantage of the method we not only identify integrable regimes but also construct integrating factors, integrals of motion and general solutions for the integrable cases, wherever possible, and bring out the mathematical structures associated with each of the integrable cases.

Motion of Curves and Surfaces and Nonlinear Evolution Equations in (2+1) Dimensions

It is shown that a class of important integrable nonlinear evolution equations in (2+1) dimensions can be associated with the motion of space curves endowed with an extra spatial variable or equivalently, moving surfaces. Geometrical invariants then define topological conserved quantities. Underlying evolution equations are shown to be associated with a triad of linear equations. Our examples include Ishimori equation and Myrzakulov equations which are shown to be geometrically equivalent to Davey-Stewartson and Zakharov -Strachan (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations respectively.

A (2+1) dimensional integrable spin model: Geometrical and gauge equivalent counterpart, solitons and localized coherent structures

A non-isospectral (2+1) dimensional integrable spin equation is investigated. It is shown that its geometrical and gauge equivalent counterparts is the (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation introduced by Zakharov and studied recently by Strachan. Using a Hirota bilinearised form, line and curved soliton solutions are obtained. Using certain freedom (arbitrariness) in the solutions of the bilinearised equation, exponentially localized dromion-like solutions for the potential is found. Also, breaking soliton solutions (for the spin variables) of the shock wave type and algebraically localized nature are constructed.

Nonlinear Physics: Integrability, Chaos and Beyond

Integrability and chaos are two of the main concepts associated with nonlinear physical systems which have revolutionized our understanding of them. Highly stable exponentially localized solitons are often associated with many of the important integrable nonlinear systems while motions which are sensitively dependent on initial conditions are associated with chaotic systems. Besides dramatically raising our perception of many natural phenomena, these concepts are opening up new vistas of applications and unfolding technologies: Optical soliton based information technology, magnetoelectronics, controlling and synchronization of chaos and secure communications, to name a few. These developments have raised further new interesting questions and potentialities. We present a particular view of some of the challenging problems and payoffs ahead in the next few decades by tracing the early historical events, summarizing the revolutionary era of 1950-70 when many important new ideas including solitons and chaos were realized and reviewing the current status. Important open problems both at the basic and applied levels are discussed.
