Renormalization of the band gap in 2D materials through the competition between electromagnetic and four-fermion interactions

Recently the renormalization of the band gap $m$, in both WSe$_2$ and MoS$_2$, has been experimentally measured as a function of the carrier concentration $n$. The main result establishes a decreasing of hundreds of meV, in comparison with the bare band gap, as the carrier concentration increases. These materials are known as transition metal dichalcogenides and their low-energy excitations are, approximately, described by the massive Dirac equation. Using Pseudo Quantum Electrodynamics (PQED) to describe the electromagnetic interaction between these quasiparticles and from renormalization group analysis, we obtain that the renormalized mass describes the band gap renormalization with a function given by $m(n)/m_0=(n/n_0)^{C_λ/2}$, where $m_0=m(n_0)$ and $C_λ$ is a function of the coupling constant $λ$. We compare our theoretical results with the experimental findings for WSe$_2$ and MoS$_2$, and we conclude that our approach is in agreement with these experimental results for reasonable values of $λ$. In addition we introduced a Gross-Neveu (GN) interaction which could simulate an disorder/impurity-like microscopic interaction. In this case, we show that there exists a critical coupling constant, namely, $λ_c \approx 0,66$ in which the beta function of the mass vanishes, providing a stable fixed point in the ultraviolet limit. For $λ>λ_c$, the renormalized mass decreases while for $λ<λ_c$ it increases with the carrier concentration.

Low-Energy Lorentz Invariance in Lifshitz Nonlinear Sigma Models

This work is dedicated to the study of both large-$N$ and perturbative quantum behaviors of Lifshitz nonlinear sigma models with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ in 2+1 dimensions. We discuss renormalization and renormalization group aspects with emphasis on the possibility of emergence of Lorentz invariance at low energies. Contrarily to the perturbative expansion, where in general the Lorentz symmetry restoration is delicate and may depend on stringent fine-tuning, our results provide a more favorable scenario in the large-$N$ framework. We also consider supersymmetric extension in this nonrelativistic situation.

Remarks on a Lorentz-breaking 4D chiral gauge theory

We investigate a Lorentz-violating chiral model composed by two fermions, a complex scalar field and a gauge field. We show that by convenientely adjusting the parameters of the model, it is possible to generate an unambiguous Carroll-Field-Jackiw term and, at the same time, provide the cancelation of the chiral anomaly. The renormalizability of the model is investigated and it is shown that the same counterterms needed in the symmetric phase also renormalize the model with broken symmetry.

Lorentz breaking supersymmetry and Horava-Lifshitz-like models

We present a Lorentz-breaking supersymmetric algebra characterized by a critical exponent $z$. Such construction requires a non trivial modification of the supercharges and superderivatives. The improvement of renormalizability for supersymmetric scalar QED is shown and the Kählerian effective potentials are calculated in different cases. We also show how the theory flows naturally to the Lorentz symmetric case at low energies.

On one-loop corrections in the Horava-Lifshitz-like QED

We study the one-loop two point functions of the gauge, scalar and spinor fields for a Horava-Lifshitz-like QED with critical exponent $z=2$. It turns out that, in certain cases, the dynamical restoration of the Lorentz symmetry at low energies can take place. We also analyze the three point vertex function of the gauge and spinor fields and prove that the triangle anomaly identically vanishes in this theory.

On the one-loop effective potential in the higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a nonconventional kinetic term

We explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential for a higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a nonconventional kinetic term. We consider the cases of minimal and nonminimal general Lagrangians. In particular, we find that in the minimal case the divergent part of the one-loop effective potential vanishes by reason of the chirality.

Braneworlds scenarios in a gravity model with higher order spatial three-curvature terms

In this work we study a Horava-like five-dimensional model in the context of braneworld theory. To begin with, the equations of motion of such model are obtained and, within the realm of warped geometry, we show that the model is consistent if and only if $λ$ takes its relativistic value 1. Furthermore, since the first derivative of the warp factor is discontinuous over the branes, we show that the elimination of problematic terms involving the square of the warp factor second order derivatives are eliminated by imposing detailed balance condition in the bulk. Afterwards, the Israel's junction conditions are computed, allowing the attainment of an effective Lagrangian in the visible brane. In particular, for a (4+1)-dimensional Horava-like model defined in the bulk without cosmological constant, we show that the resultant effective Lagrangian in the brane corresponds to a (3+1)-dimensional Horava-like model with an emergent positive cosmological constant but without detailed balance condition. Now, restoration of detailed balance condition, at this time imposed over the brane, plays an interesting role by fitting accordingly the sign of the arbitrary constant $β$ that labels the extra terms in the model, insuring a positive brane tension and a real energy for the graviton within its dispersion relation. To end up with, the brane consistency equations are obtained and, as a result, we show that the detailed balance condition again plays an essential role in eliminating bad behaving terms and that the model admits positive brane tensions in the compactification scheme if, and only if, $β$ is negative, what is in accordance with the previous result obtained for the visible brane.

Chern-Simons terms in Lifshitz like quantum electrodynamics

In this work the generation of generalized Chern-Simons terms in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with high spatial derivatives is studied. We analyze the self-energy corrections to the gauge field propagator by considering an expansion of the amplitude up to third order in the external momenta. The divergences of the corrections are determined and explicit forms for the Chern-Simons terms with high derivatives are obtained. Some unusual aspects of the calculation are stressed and the existence of a smooth isotropic limit is proved. The transversality of the anisotropic gauge propagator is also discussed.

Competing interactions and the Lifshitz-type Nonlinear Sigma Model

We establish the equivalence between the continuum limit of the quantum spherical model with competing interactions, which is relevant to the investigation of Lifshitz points, and the O(N) nonlinear sigma model with the addition of higher order spatial derivative operators, which breaks the Lorentz symmetry and is known as Lifshitz-type (or anisotropic) nonlinear sigma model. In the context of the 1/N expansion, we also discuss the renormalization properties of this nonlinear sigma model and find the nontrivial fixed points of the beta-functions in various dimensions, which turn out to be connected with the existence of phase transitions in the quantum spherical model.

Stochastic Quantization of the Spherical Model and Supersymmetry

We use the stochastic quantization method to construct a supersymmetric version of the quantum spherical model. This is based on the equivalence between the Brownian motion described by a Langevin equation and the supersymmetric quantum mechanics, which is connected with the existence of the Nicolai map. We investigate the critical behavior of the supersymmetric model at finite as well as at zero temperatures, showing that it exhibits both classical and quantum phase transitions, and determine the critical dimensions.

Dynamics of a Dirac Fermion in the presence of spin noncommutativity

Recently, it has been proposed a spacetime noncommutativity that involves spin degrees of freedom, here called "spin noncommutativity". One of the motivations for such a construction is that it preserves Lorentz invariance, which is deformed or simply broken in other approaches to spacetime noncommutativity. In this work, we gain further insight in the physical aspects of the spin noncommutativity. The noncommutative Dirac equation is derived from an action principle, and it is found to lead to the conservation of a modified current, which involves the background electromagnetic field. Finally, we study the Landau problem in the presence of spin noncommutativity. For this scenario of a constant magnetic field, we are able to derive a simple Hermitean non-commutative correction to the Hamiltonian operator, and show that the degeneracy of the excited states is lifted by the noncommutativity at the second order or perturbation theory.

On Higher Spatial Derivative Field Theories

In this work, we employ renormalization group methods to study the general behavior of field theories possessing anisotropic scaling in the spacetime variables. The Lorentz breaking symmetry that accompanies these models are either soft, if no higher spatial derivative is present, or it may have a more complex structure if higher spatial derivatives are also included. Both situations are discussed in models with only scalar fields and also in models with fermions as a Yukawa like model.

Propagator in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper it is studied the propagator for the modified theory of gravity proposed by Ho\vrava. We first calculate the propagator in the $λ=1$ case and show that the main poles that arise correspond to the spin two particle and scalar particle, already known in the literature. The presence of a bad ultraviolet behaving term spoils renormalizability of the theory but it is eliminated by imposing the detailed balance condition, although just a soft version of this condition is actually needed. The problems of a negative mass term and a residue with undefined sign, which is due to the presence of the cosmological constant, is verified at the tree level demanding a complete elimination of the tadpole in order to be fully analyzed. However, in the absence of such constant, the extra scalar degree of freedom has no dynamics, at least at the tree-level, and the theory posses only two dynamical degrees of freedom. Also, to understand the implications of $λ$, we analyse a simplified model, the $λR$ theory, and verify that it becomes non unitary, being a strong argument to set $λ=1$.

Fourth order spatial derivative gravity

In this work we study a modified theory of gravity that contains up to fourth order spatial derivatives as a model for the Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The propagator is evaluated and, as a result, it is obtained one extra pole corresponding to a spin two nonrelativistic massless particle, an extra term which jeopardizes renormalizability, besides the unexpected general relativity unmodified propagator. Then, unitarity is proved at the tree-level, where the general relativity pole has shown to have no dynamics, remaining only the two degrees of freedom of the new pole. Next, the nonrelativistic effective potential is determined from a scattering process of two identical massive gravitationally interacting bosons. In this limit, Newton's potential is obtained, together with a Darwin-like term that comes from the extra non-pole term in the propagator. Regarding renormalizability, this extra term may be harmful, by power counting, but it can be eliminated by adjusting the free parameters of the model. This adjustment is in accord with the detailed balance condition suggested in the literature and shows that the way in which extra spatial derivative terms are added is of fundamental importance.

Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in a three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model

Using the superfield formalism, we study the dynamical breaking of gauge symmetry in the N=1 three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons model, coupled to a complex scalar superfield with a quartic self-coupling. This is an analogue of the conformally invariant Coleman-Weinberg model in four spacetime dimensions. We show that a mass for the gauge and matter superfields are dynamically generated after two-loop corrections to the effective superpotential. We also discuss the N=2 extension of our work, showing that the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in such model is not feasible, because it is incompatible with perturbation theory.

Dynamical noncommutativity

The model of dynamical noncommutativity is proposed. The system consists of two interrelated parts. The first of them describes the physical degrees of freedom with coordinates q^1, q^2, the second one corresponds to the noncommutativity r which has a proper dynamics. After quantization the commutator of two physical coordinates is proportional to the function of r. The interesting feature of our model is the dependence of nonlocality on the energy of the system. The more the energy, the more the nonlocality. The lidding contribution is due to the mode of noncommutativity, however, the physical degrees of freedom also contribute in nonlocality in higher orders in θ.

Horava-Lifshitz modifications of the Casimir effect

We study the modifications induced by spacetime anisotropy on the Casimir effect in the case of two parallel plates. Nonperturbative and perturbative regimes are analyzed. In the first case the Casimir force either vanishes or it reverses its direction which, in any case, makes the proposal untenable. On the other hand, the perturbative model enables us to incorporate appropriately the effects of spacetime anisotropy.

Noncommutativity due to spin

Using the Berezin-Marinov pseudoclassical formulation of spin particle we propose a classical model of spin noncommutativity. In the nonrelativistic case, the Poisson brackets between the coordinates are proportional to the spin angular momentum. The quantization of the model leads to the noncommutativity with mixed spacial and spin degrees of freedom. A modified Pauli equation, describing a spin half particle in an external e.m. field is obtained. We show that nonlocality caused by the spin noncommutativity depends on the spin of the particle; for spin zero, nonlocality does not appear, for spin half, $ΔxΔy\geqθ^{2}/2$, etc. In the relativistic case the noncommutative Dirac equation was derived. For that we introduce a new star product. The advantage of our model is that in spite of the presence of noncommutativity and nonlocality, it is Lorentz invariant. Also, in the quasiclassical approximation it gives noncommutativity with a nilpotent parameter.

On the aether-like Lorentz-breaking actions

We demonstrate the generation of the CPT-even, aether-like Lorentz-breaking actions for the scalar and electromagnetic fields via their appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling to spinor fields in three, four and five space-time dimensions. Besides, we show that the aether-like terms for the spinor field also can be generated as a consequence of the same couplings. Also we discuss the dispersion relations in the theories with aether-like Lorentz-breaking terms and find the tree-level effective (Breit) potential for fermion scattering and the one-loop effective potential corresponding to the action of the scalar field.

The 1/N Expansion in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

We study the 1/N expansion in noncommutative quantum mechanics for the anharmonic and Coulombian potentials. The expansion for the anharmonic oscillator presented good convergence properties, but for the Coulombian potential, we found a divergent large N expansion when using the usual noncommutative generalization of the potential. We proposed a modified version of the noncommutative Coulombian potential which provides a well-behaved 1/N expansion.

Equivalence between supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models coupled to a matter spinor superfield

We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss.

The three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace

We propose two alternative formulations for a three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace in which some of the fermionic coordinates obey Clifford anticommutation relations. For this superspace, we construct the supersymmetry generators satisfying standard anticommutation relations and the corresponding supercovariant derivatives. We formulate a scalar superfield theory in such a superspace and calculate its propagator. We also suggest a prescription for the introduction of interactions in such theories.

Noncommutative Correction to the Aharonov-Bohm Scattering: a Field Theory Approach

We study a noncommutative nonrelativistic theory in 2+1 dimensions of a scalar field coupled to the Chern-Simons field. In the commutative situation this model has been used to simulate the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the field theory context. We verified that, contrarily to the commutative result, the inclusion of a quartic self-interaction of the scalar field is not necessary to secure the ultraviolet renormalizability of the model. However, to obtain a smooth commutative limit the presence of a quartic gauge invariant self-interaction is required. For small noncommutativity we fix the corrections to the Aharonov-Bohm scattering and prove that up to one-loop the model is free from dangerous infrared/ultraviolet divergences.

Nonrelativistic Limit of the Scalar Chern-Simons Theory and the Aharonov-Bohm Scattering

We study the nonrelativistic limit of the quantum theory of a Chern-Simons field minimally coupled to a scalar field with quartic self-interaction. The renormalization of the relativistic model, in the Coulomb gauge, is discussed. We employ a procedure to calculate scattering amplitudes for low momenta that generates their $|p|/m$ expansion and separates the contributions coming from high and low energy intermediary states. The two body scattering amplitude is calculated up to order $p^2/m^2$. It is shown that the existence of a critical value of the self-interaction parameter for which the 2-particle scattering amplitude reduces to the Aharonov-Bohm one is a strictly nonrelativistic feature. The subdominant terms correspond to relativistic corrections to the Aharonov-Bohm scattering. A nonrelativistic reduction scheme and an effective nonrelativistic Lagrangian to account for the relativistic corrections are proposed.

Canonical Quantization of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory in the Coulomb Gauge

The Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is canonically quantized in the Coulomb gauge by using the Dirac bracket quantization procedure. The determination of the Coulomb gauge polarization vector turns out to be intrincate. A set of quantum Poincaré densities obeying the Dirac-Schwinger algebra, and, therefore, free of anomalies, is constructed. The peculiar analytical structure of the polarization vector is shown to be at the root for the existence of spin of the massive gauge quanta. The Coulomb gauge Feynman rules are used to compute the Möller scattering amplitude in the lowest order of perturbation theory. The result coincides with that obtained by using covariant Feynman rules. This proof of equivalence is, afterwards, extended to all orders of perturbation theory. The so called infrared safe photon propagator emerges as an effective propagator which allows for replacing all the terms in the interaction Hamiltonian of the Coulomb gauge by the standard field-current minimal interaction Hamiltonian.
