External sources in a minimal and nonminimal CPT-odd Lorentz violating Maxwell electrodynamics

This paper is devoted to the study of interactions between stationary electromagnetic sources for the minimal and nonminimal CPT-odd photon sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), where we search mainly for physical phenomena not present in the Maxwell electrodynamics. First we consider the minimal CPT-odd sector, where the Lorentz violation is caused by the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, namely $\simε^{μναβ}\left(k_{AF}\right)_μA_νF_{αβ}$, and we treat the Lorentz breaking parameter $\left(k_{AF}\right)^μ$ perturbatively up to second order. We consider effects due to the presence of point-like charges, Dirac strings and point-like dipoles. In special, we calculate the electromagnetic field produced outside the string and investigate the so called Aharonov-Bohm bound states in Lorentz violation context. After, we consider a model where the Lorentz violation is generated by the higher-derivative version of the CFJ model, namely $\simε^{μναβ}V_μA_ν\Box F_{αβ}$, which is a dimension five term of the CPT-odd sector of the nonminimal SME. For this higher-derivative model, we obtain effects up to second order in $V^μ$ related to the presence of point-like charges and a steady current line. We use overestimated constrains for the Lorentz violation parameters in order to investigate the physical relevance of some results found in atomic systems. We also make an overestimate for the background vectors using experimental data from the atomic electric field.

Semi-transparent boundaries in CPT-even Lorentz violating electrodynamics

Some aspects of the nonbirefringent CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), in the vicinity of a semi-transparent mirror, are investigated in this paper. We first consider a model where the Lorentz symmetry breaking is caused by a single background vector $v^μ$, and we obtain perturbative results up to second order in $v^μ$. Specifically, we compute the modified propagator for the gauge field due to the presence of the mirror and we analyze the corresponding interaction between the mirror and a stationary point-like charge. We show that when the charge is placed in the vicinity of the mirror, a spontaneous torque emerges, which is a new effect with no counterpart in Maxwell electrodynamics. We also compare these results with the corresponding ones obtained for the Lorentz violating scalar field theory. As expected, in the limiting case of perfect mirrors, we recover the interaction found via the image method. Finally, we discuss how we can extend these results for a more general Lorentz violating background.

Mirrors and field sources in a Lorentz-violating scalar field theory

In this paper we consider different classical effects in a model for a scalar field incorporating Lorentz symmetry breaking due to the presence of a single background vector v^μ coupled to its derivative. We perform an investigation of the interaction energy between stationary steady sources concentrated along parallel branes with an arbitrary number of dimensions, and derive from this study some physical consequences. For the case of the scalar dipole we show the emergence of a nontrivial torque, which is distinctive sign of the Lorentz violation. We also investigate a similar model in the presence of a semi-transparent mirror. For a general relative orientation between the mirror and the v^μ, we are able to perform calculations perturbatively in v^μ up to second order. We also find results without recourse to approximations for two special cases, that of the mirror and v^μ being parallel or perpendicular to each other. For all these configurations, the propagator for the scalar field and the interaction force between the mirror and a point-like field source are computed. It is shown that the image method is valid in our model for the Dirichlet's boundary condition, and we argue that this is a non-trivial result. We also show the emergence of a torque on the mirror depending on its orientation with respect to the Lorentz violating background. This is a new effect with no counterpart in theories with Lorentz symmetry in the presence of mirrors.

Radiative corrections and Lorentz violation

Radiative corrections in Lorentz violating (LV) models have already received a lot of attention in the literature in recent years, with many instances where a LV operator in one sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME) generates, via loop corrections, one of the LV coefficients in the photon sector, which is probably the most understood and well constrained part of the SME. In many of these works, however, the now standard notation of the SME is not used, which can obscure the comparison of different results, and their possible phenomenological relevance. In this work, we fill this gap, trying to build up a more general perspective on the topic, bringing many of the results to the SME conventional notation and commenting on their possible phenomenological relevance. We uncover one example where a result already presented in the literature can be used to place a stronger bound on the temporal component of the b_μ coefficient of the fermion sector of the SME.

Generation of higher derivatives operators and electromagnetic wave propagation in a Lorentz-violation scenario

We study the perturbative generation of higher-derivative operators as corrections to the photon effective action, which are originated from a Lorentz violation background. Such corrections are obtained, at one-loop order, through the proper-time method, using the zeta function regularization. We focus over the lowest order corrections and investigate their influence in the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the vacuum, in the presence of a strong, constant magnetic field. This is a setting of experimental relevance, since it bases active efforts to measure non linear electromagnetic effects. After surprising cancellations of Lorentz violating corrections to the Maxwell's equation, we show that no effects of the kind of Lorentz violation we consider can be detected in such a context.

New effects in the interaction between electromagnetic sources mediated by nonminimal Lorentz violating interactions

This paper is dedicated to the study of interactions between external sources for the electromagnetic field in a Lorentz symmetry breaking scenario. We focus on a particular higher derivative, Lorentz violating interaction that arises from a specific model that was argued to lead to interesting effects in the low energy phenomenology of light pseudoscalars interacting with photons. The kind of higher derivative Lorentz violating interaction we discuss do not appear in the well known Standard Model Extension, therefore they are called nonminimal. They are usually expected to be relevant only at very high energies, but we argue they might also induce relevant effects in low energy phenomena. Special attention is given for phenomena that have no counterpart in Maxwell theory.

Nielsen Identity and the Renormalization Group Functions in an Abelian Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Model in the Superfield Formalism

In this paper we study the Nielsen identity for the supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model in the superfield formalism, in three spacetime dimensions. The Nielsen identity is essential to understand the gauge invariance of the symmetry breaking mechanism, and it is calculated by using the BRST invariance of the model. We discuss the technical difficulties in applying this identity to the complete effective superpotential, but we show how we can study in detail the gauge independence of one part of the effective superpotential, $K_{eff}$. We calculate the renormalization group functions of the model for arbitrary gauge-fixing parameter, finding them to be independent of the gauge choice. This result can be used to argue that $K_{eff}$ also does not depend on the gauge parameter. We discuss the possibility of the extension of these results to the complete effective superpotential.

Renormalization Group Improvement and Dynamical Breaking of Symmetry in a Supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter Model

In this work, we investigate the consequences of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective superpotential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in an N = 1 supersymmetric theory including an Abelian Chern-Simons superfield coupled to N scalar superfields in (2+1) dimensional spacetime. The classical Lagrangian presents scale invariance, which is broken by radiative corrections to the effective superpotential. We calculate the effective superpotential up to two-loops by using the RGE and the beta functions and anomalous dimensions known in the literature. We then show how the RGE can be used to improve this calculation, by summing up properly defined series of leading logs (LL), next-to-leading logs (NLL) contributions, and so on... We conclude that even if the RGE improvement procedure can indeed be applied in a supersymmetric model, the effects of the consideration of the RGE are not so dramatic as it happens in the non-supersymmetric case.

A relation between deformed superspace and Lee-Wick higher-derivative theories

We propose a type of non-anticommutative superspace, with the interesting property of relating to Lee-Wick type of higher derivatives theories, which are known for their interesting properties, and have lead to proposals of phenomenologicaly viable higher derivatives extensions of the Standard Model. The deformation of superspace we consider does not preserve supersymmetry or associativity in general; however, we show that a non-anticommutative version of the Wess-Zumino model can be properly defined. In fact, the definition of chiral and antichiral superfields turns out to be simpler in our case than in the well known ${\cal N}=1/2$ supersymmetric case. We show that, when the theory is truncated at the first nontrivial order in the deformation parameter, supersymmetry is restored, and we end up with a well known Lee-Wick type of higher derivative extension of the Wess-Zumino model. Thus we show how non-anticommutative could provide an alternative mechanism for generation of these kind of higher derivative theories.

Generation of Axion-Like Couplings via Quantum Corrections in a Lorentz Violating Background

Light pseudoscalars, or axion like particles (ALPs), are much studied due to their potential relevance to the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The most relevant coupling of ALPs from the viewpoint of current experimental searches is to the photon: in this work, we study the generation of this coupling as an effect of quantum corrections, originated from an underlying Lorentz violating background. Most interestingly, we show that the interaction so generated turns out to be Lorentz invariant, thus mimicking the standard ALPs coupling to the photon that is considered in the experiments. This consideration implies that violations of spacetime symmetries, much studied as possible consequences of physics in very high energy scales, might infiltrate in other realms of physics in unsuspected ways. Additionally, we conjecture that a similar mechanism can also generate Lorentz invariant couplings involving scalar particles and photons, playing a possible role in the phenomenology of Higgs bosons.

Non-perturbative fixed points and renormalization group improved effective potential

The stability conditions of a renormalization group improved effective potential have been discussed in the case of scalar QED and QCD with a colorless scalar. We calculate the same potential in these models assuming the existence of non-perturbative fixed points associated to a conformal phase. In the case of scalar QED the barrier of instability found previously is barely displaced as we approach the fixed point, and in the case of QCD with a colorless scalar not only the barrier is changed but the local minimum of the potential is also changed.

Dynamics of a Dirac Fermion in the presence of spin noncommutativity

Recently, it has been proposed a spacetime noncommutativity that involves spin degrees of freedom, here called "spin noncommutativity". One of the motivations for such a construction is that it preserves Lorentz invariance, which is deformed or simply broken in other approaches to spacetime noncommutativity. In this work, we gain further insight in the physical aspects of the spin noncommutativity. The noncommutative Dirac equation is derived from an action principle, and it is found to lead to the conservation of a modified current, which involves the background electromagnetic field. Finally, we study the Landau problem in the presence of spin noncommutativity. For this scenario of a constant magnetic field, we are able to derive a simple Hermitean non-commutative correction to the Hamiltonian operator, and show that the degeneracy of the excited states is lifted by the noncommutativity at the second order or perturbation theory.

Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in a three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model

Using the superfield formalism, we study the dynamical breaking of gauge symmetry in the N=1 three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons model, coupled to a complex scalar superfield with a quartic self-coupling. This is an analogue of the conformally invariant Coleman-Weinberg model in four spacetime dimensions. We show that a mass for the gauge and matter superfields are dynamically generated after two-loop corrections to the effective superpotential. We also discuss the N=2 extension of our work, showing that the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in such model is not feasible, because it is incompatible with perturbation theory.

Horava-Lifshitz modifications of the Casimir effect

We study the modifications induced by spacetime anisotropy on the Casimir effect in the case of two parallel plates. Nonperturbative and perturbative regimes are analyzed. In the first case the Casimir force either vanishes or it reverses its direction which, in any case, makes the proposal untenable. On the other hand, the perturbative model enables us to incorporate appropriately the effects of spacetime anisotropy.

Renormalization Group and Conformal Symmetry Breaking in the Chern-Simons Theory Coupled to Matter

The three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to a scalar and a fermionic field of arbitrary charge is considered in order to study conformal symmetry breakdown and the effective potential stability. We present an improved effective potential computation based on two-loop calculations and the renormalization group equation: the later allows us to sum up series of terms in the effective potential where the power of the logarithms are one, two and three units smaller than the total power of coupling constants (i.e., leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading logarithms). For the sake of this calculation we determined the beta function of the fermion-fermion-scalar-scalar interaction and the anomalous dimension of the scalar field. We shown that the improved effective potential provides a much more precise determination of the properties of the theory in the broken phase, compared to the standard effective potential obtained directly from the loop calculations. This happens because the region of the parameter space where dynamical symmetry breaking occurs is drastically reduced by the improvement discussed here.

The 1/N Expansion in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

We study the 1/N expansion in noncommutative quantum mechanics for the anharmonic and Coulombian potentials. The expansion for the anharmonic oscillator presented good convergence properties, but for the Coulombian potential, we found a divergent large N expansion when using the usual noncommutative generalization of the potential. We proposed a modified version of the noncommutative Coulombian potential which provides a well-behaved 1/N expansion.

Equivalence between supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models coupled to a matter spinor superfield

We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss.

The three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace

We propose two alternative formulations for a three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace in which some of the fermionic coordinates obey Clifford anticommutation relations. For this superspace, we construct the supersymmetry generators satisfying standard anticommutation relations and the corresponding supercovariant derivatives. We formulate a scalar superfield theory in such a superspace and calculate its propagator. We also suggest a prescription for the introduction of interactions in such theories.
