Lorentz symmetry breaking -- classical and quantum aspects

In this book, we review various aspects of the Lorentz symmetry breaking, both classical and quantum ones, with the special interest to perturbative generation of Lorentz-breaking terms. We present impacts of Lorentz symmetry breaking in noncommutative and supersymmetric theories. Also, we discuss the problem of Lorentz symmetry breaking in a curved space-time. The book is closed with a review of experimental studies of Lorentz symmetry breaking.

Bouncing universe in a heat bath

We develop a thermal description for photon modes within the context of bouncing universe. Within this study, we start with a Lorentz-breaking dispersion relation which accounts for modified Friedmann equations with a bounce solution. We calculate the spectral radiance, the entropy, the Helmholtz free energy, the heat capacity, and the mean energy. Nevertheless, the latter two ones turn out to contribute only in a trivial manner. Furthermore, one intriguing aspect gives rise to: for some configurations of $η$, $l_{P}$, and $T$, the thermodynamical behavior of the system seems to indicate instability. However, despite of showing this particularity, the solutions of the thermodynamic functions in general turn out to agree with the literature, e.g., the second law of thermodynamics is maintained. More so, all the results are derived \textit{analytically} and three different regimes of temperature of the universe are also considered, i.e., the inflationary era, the electroweak epoch and the cosmic microwave background.

Gauge embedding procedure: classical and quantum equivalence between dual models

In this paper the gauge embedding procedure of dualization is reassessed through a deeper analysis of the mutual equivalence of vector field models of more generic forms, explicitly, a general modified massive gauge-breaking extension of electrodynamics and its dual gauge-invariant model we derive in the paper. General relations between the vector field propagators and interaction terms of these models are obtained. Further, these models are shown to be equivalent at tree-level and one-loop physical calculations. Finally, we discuss extension of this equivalence to all loop orders.

Induced gravitational topological term and the Einstein-Cartan modified theory

It is well known that only the axial piece of the torsion couples minimally to fermions in a Riemann-Cartan geometry, while the other ones decouple. In this paper, we consider the Dirac field minimally coupled to a dynamical background with torsion and compute its contribution to the fermionic one-loop effective action. Such a contribution owns topological nature since it can be linked with topological invariants from Riemann-Cartan spaces, like Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms. Furthermore, we propose a novel modified theory of gravity constructed by adding the aforementioned one-loop contribution to the Einstein-Cartan action. The modified field equations reduce to those ones of GR under certain circumstances, providing therefore trivial solutions. However, in particular, we find a non-trivial solution where the modified field equations do not reduce to the GR ones.

One-loop calculations in CPT-even Lorentz-breaking scalar QED

In this paper, we study a CPT-even Lorentz-breaking extension of the scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop lower-order contributions in the Lorentz-violating parameters to the two-point functions of scalar and gauge fields. We found that the two background tensors, coming from the two sectors (scalar and gauge) are mixed in the one-loop corrections both in finite and divergent parts. This shows that these two Lorentz-breaking terms cannot be studied in an isolated form. Besides, the results in the gauge sector are confirmed to be transversal.

Radiative corrections in metric-affine bumblebee model

We consider the metric-affine formulation of bumblebee gravity, derive the field equations, and show that the connection can be written as Levi-Civita of a disformally related metric in which the bumblebee field determines the disformal part. As a consequence, the bumblebee field gets coupled to all the other matter fields present in the theory, potentially leading to nontrivial phenomenological effects. To explore this issue we compute the weak-field limit and study the resulting effective theory. In this scenario, we couple scalar and spinorial matter to the effective metric which, besides the zeroth-order Minkowskian contribution, also has the vector field contributions of the bumblebee, and show that it is renormalizable at one-loop level. From our analysis it also follows that the non-metricity of this theory is determined by the gradient of the bumblebee field, and that it can acquire a vacuum expectation value due to the contribution of the bumblebee field.

Softly higher-derivative massive gravity

In this work, we study the higher-derivative massive gravity in $D$-dimensional space-time with the mass term arisen due to a 2-brane embedded in a $4D$ Minkowski spacetime. We consider the effect of a resonance mass term from the DGP braneworld model for the higher-derivative massive gravity. Moreover, we add the gravitational Chern-Simons and Ricci-Cotton terms to this model and evaluate the graviton propagator using a basis of Barnes-Rivers spin projectors. Using the obtained propagator, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing causality and unitarity.

Spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking and one-loop effective action in the metric-affine bumblebee gravity

The metric-affine bumblebee model in the presence of fermionic matter minimally coupled to the connection is studied. We show that the model admits an Einstein frame representation in which the matter sector is described by a non-minimal Dirac action without any analogy in the literature. Such non-minimal terms involve unconventional couplings between the bumblebee and the fermion field. We then rewrite the quadratic fermion action in the Einstein frame in the basis of 16 Dirac matrices in order to identify the coefficients for Lorentz/CPT violation in all orders of the non-minimal coupling $ξ$. The exact result for the fermionic determinant in the Einstein frame, including all orders in $ξ$, is also provided. We demonstrate that the axial contributions are at least of second order in the perturbative expansion of $ξ$. Furthermore, we compute the one-loop effective potential within the weak field approximation.

Topological structures in a non-canonical perturbative dynamics of a cuscuton-like model

In this work, a possible description for quantum dynamics of the cuscuton within the sigma-model approach is presented. Lower order perturbative corrections and the structure of divergences are found. Motivated by the results generated by the perturbative approach, we investigate the existence of topological structures in the cuscuton-like model. The structures we study are, first, kink-like configurations in two dimensional spacetime, second, vortex solutions in three dimensional one with gauge field ruled by the Maxwell term. In fact, to show the existence of kink solutions it is needed to introduce a standard dynamics term in the cuscuton-like model. Then, a numerical approach (interpolation method) is used and the solution of the scalar field is presented. On the other hand, for the study of topological vortices, we reorganized the energy density to obtain, for convenience, equations similar to those canonical vortex structures, namely, the Maxwell-Higgs model. In fact, even for this particular case, we observed the existence of structures with localized energy and quantized magnetic flux in a given topological sector. We also show that when the model does not spontaneously break the symmetry, the $(2+1)D$ model only admits the so-called non-topological field solutions.

Gravitational lensing in a black-bounce traversable wormhole spacetime

In this work, we calculate the deflection angle of light in a spacetime that interpolates between regular black holes and traversable wormholes, depending on the free parameter of the metric. Afterwards, this angular deflection is substituted into the lens equations which allows to obtain physically measurable results, such as the position of the relativistic images and the magnifications.

No radiative corrections to the Carroll-Field-Jackiw term beyond one-loop order

We demonstrate explicitly the absence of the quantum corrections to the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term beyond one-loop within the Lorentz-breaking CPT-odd extension of QED. The proof holds within two prescriptions of quantum calculations, with the axial vector in the fermion sector {}treated either as a perturbation or as a contribution in the exact propagator of the fermion field.

Strong gravitational lensing in a spacetime with topological charge within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity

In this work we calculate the angular deflection of light in the strong field limit in two spacetimes which were previously studied within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI), namely, a black hole and a wormhole, both with topological charge. We show that the presence of the parameters characterizing EiBI and the topological charge promote significant changes in the angular deflection of light with respect to that one obtained in Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the expression for angular deflection in the strong field limit, we calculate the position and magnification of the respective relativistic images.

Horava-Lifshitz four-fermion model revisited and dynamical symmetry breaking

In this paper, we develop studies of the dynamical symmetry breaking in the Horava-Lifshitz four-fermion model for the specific case $z=3$ and explicitly demonstrate that for various space-time dimensions, one could arrive at the theory displaying both dynamical generation of the Lorentz symmetry for the kinetic term and arising the positively defined potential at the same time. At the same time, for $D=3$, the Lorentz invariant Chern-Simons term is generated.

Lorentz symmetry breaking in a Yang-Mills theory within the Gribov restriction

In this paper we take into account the existence of Gribov copies in a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge with an effective Lorentz symmetry breaking, induced by the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term. The self consistent gap equation of the Gribov parameter is properly derived and, provided observational bounds to the amplitude of the CFJ parameter in the $SU(2)$ gauge theory, a qualitative analysis of the Gribov parameter and of the poles of the propagator is developed.

Nonlinear $σ$-models in the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

In this paper we consider two different nonlinear $σ$-models minimally coupled to Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. We show that the resultant geometries represent minimal modifications with respect to those found in GR, though with important physical consequences. In particular, wormhole structures always arise, though this does not guarantee by itself the geodesic completeness of those space-times. In one of the models, quadratic in the canonical kinetic term, we identify a subset of solutions which are regular everywhere and are geodesically complete. We discuss characteristic features of these solutions and their dependence on the relationship between mass and global charge.

Radiative corrections and Lorentz violation

Radiative corrections in Lorentz violating (LV) models have already received a lot of attention in the literature in recent years, with many instances where a LV operator in one sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME) generates, via loop corrections, one of the LV coefficients in the photon sector, which is probably the most understood and well constrained part of the SME. In many of these works, however, the now standard notation of the SME is not used, which can obscure the comparison of different results, and their possible phenomenological relevance. In this work, we fill this gap, trying to build up a more general perspective on the topic, bringing many of the results to the SME conventional notation and commenting on their possible phenomenological relevance. We uncover one example where a result already presented in the literature can be used to place a stronger bound on the temporal component of the b_μ coefficient of the fermion sector of the SME.

Chern-Simons modified gravity and closed time-like curves

We verify the consistency of the Gödel-type solutions within the four-dimensional Chern-Simons modified gravity with the non-dynamical Chern-Simons coefficient, for different forms of matter including dust, fluid, scalar field and electromagnetic field, and the related causality issues. Unlike the general relativity, the vacuum solution turns out to be possible in our theory. Another essentially new result of our theory having no analogue in the general relativity consists in the existence of the hyperbolic causal solutions for the physically well-motivated matter.

Generation of higher derivatives operators and electromagnetic wave propagation in a Lorentz-violation scenario

We study the perturbative generation of higher-derivative operators as corrections to the photon effective action, which are originated from a Lorentz violation background. Such corrections are obtained, at one-loop order, through the proper-time method, using the zeta function regularization. We focus over the lowest order corrections and investigate their influence in the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the vacuum, in the presence of a strong, constant magnetic field. This is a setting of experimental relevance, since it bases active efforts to measure non linear electromagnetic effects. After surprising cancellations of Lorentz violating corrections to the Maxwell's equation, we show that no effects of the kind of Lorentz violation we consider can be detected in such a context.

Gödel and Gödel-type universes in Brans-Dicke theory

In this paper, conditions for existence of Gödel and Gödel-type solutions in Brans-Dicke (BD) scalar-tensor theory and their main features are studied. The consistency of equations of motion, causality violation and existence of CTCs (closed time-like curves) are investigated. The role which cosmological constant and Mach principle play to achieve the consistency of this model is studied.

Higher-derivative Lorentz-breaking terms in extended QED at the finite temperature

In this paper we discuss finiteness and ambiguities of the higher-derivative Lorentz-breaking terms in extended QED with a magnetic coupling at the finite temperature. We find that, beside of the higher-derivative Carroll-Field-Jackiw-like term and Myers-Pospelov term, many new terms arise in a finite temperature case, but most of them vanish in high temperature limit.

Induction of the higher-derivative Chern-Simons extension in QED$_3$

We perform the perturbative generation of the higher-derivative Chern-Simons contribution to the effective action in the three-dimensional QED at zero and finite temperature. In the latter case, we show that as the temperature goes to infinity this contribution vanishes. However, as expected, as the temperature goes to zero only the covariant part survives. The non-covariant part contributes only in intermediate temperatures where presents a maximum.

Nonanalyticity of the induced Carroll-Field-Jackiw term at finite temperature

In this paper, we discuss the behavior of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) coefficient $k^μ$ arising due to integration over massive fermions, and the modification suffered by its topological structure in the finite temperature case. Our study is based on the imaginary time formalism and summation over the Matsubara frequencies. We demonstrate that the self-energy of photon is non-analytic for the small $k^μ$ limit, i.e., the static limit $(k_0=0,\vec k\rightarrow 0)$ and the long wavelength limit $(k_0\rightarrow 0,\vec k= 0)$ do not commute, while the tensorial structure of the CFJ term holds in both limits.

On the alternative formulation of the three-dimensional noncommutative superspace

In this paper we propose a new version for the noncommutative superspace in 3D. This version is shown to be convenient for performing quantum calculations. In the paper, we use the theory of the chiral superfield as a prototype for possible generalizations, calculating the one-loop two-point function of a chiral supefield and the one-loop low-energy effective action in this theory.

Remarks on a Lorentz-breaking 4D chiral gauge theory

We investigate a Lorentz-violating chiral model composed by two fermions, a complex scalar field and a gauge field. We show that by convenientely adjusting the parameters of the model, it is possible to generate an unambiguous Carroll-Field-Jackiw term and, at the same time, provide the cancelation of the chiral anomaly. The renormalizability of the model is investigated and it is shown that the same counterterms needed in the symmetric phase also renormalize the model with broken symmetry.

Casimir Effect in Horava-Lifshitz-like theories

In this paper we consider a Lorentz-breaking scalar field theory within the Horava-Lifshtz approach. We investigate the changes that a space-time anisotropy produces in the Casimir effect. A massless real quantum scalar field is considered in two distinct situations: between two parallel plates and inside a rectangular two-dimensional box. In both cases we have adopted specific boundary conditions on the field at the boundary. As we shall see, the energy and the Casimir force strongly depends on the parameter associated with the breaking of Lorentz symmetry and also on the boundary conditions.

Note on the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld scenario

In this work we deal with the presence of braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional space-time with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. The braneworld scenario is built under the presence of a single real scalar field, and we modify the gravity sector to include generic function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We study several specific models, and we construct exact braneworld solutions, in particular for including the Gauss-Bonnet term at first and second order power. As an interesting result, we show that the brane tends to split for a specific modification in the gravity sector, in the presence of non constant Gauss-Bonnet term.

On one-loop corrections in the Horava-Lifshitz-like QED

We study the one-loop two point functions of the gauge, scalar and spinor fields for a Horava-Lifshitz-like QED with critical exponent $z=2$. It turns out that, in certain cases, the dynamical restoration of the Lorentz symmetry at low energies can take place. We also analyze the three point vertex function of the gauge and spinor fields and prove that the triangle anomaly identically vanishes in this theory.

On the decoupling of heavy states in higher-derivative supersymmetric field theories

We study the problem of decoupling of heavy chiral superfields in four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric field theories with Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-violating higher-derivative terms. We demonstrate that the earlier found effect of large logarithmic quantum corrections, due to heavy chiral superfields, takes place not only if the theory possesses quantum divergences, but also for essentially finite theories involving higher derivative terms, both Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-breaking ones.

On the duality in CPT-even Lorentz-breaking theories

In this paper, we generalize the duality between self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories for the case of a CPT-even Lorentz-breaking extension of these theories. The duality is demonstrated with use of the gauge embedding procedure, both in free and coupled cases, and with the master action approach. The physical spectra of both Lorentz-breaking theories are studied. The massive poles are shown to coincide and to respect the requirements for unitarity and causality at tree level. The extra massless poles which are present in the dualized model are shown to be nondynamical.

On the Lorentz-breaking theory with higher derivatives in spinor sector

We consider the two-point function of the gauge field in Lorentz-breaking theories with higher-derivative extension of the Dirac Lagrangian. We show that the Carroll-Field-Jackiw term naturally arises in this theory as a quantum correction being perfectly finite and thus displaying no ambiguities. Also, the finiteness of this term at low energy limit and the absence of large Lorentz violating corrections allows to avoid the fine-tuning problem.

One-loop effective potential in nonlocal scalar field models

In this paper we apply the usual perturbative methodology to evaluate the one-loop effective potential in a nonlocal scalar field theory. We find that the effect induced by the nonlocaliity of the theory is always very small and we discuss the consequences of this result. In particular we argue that, looking at one-loop corrections for matter fields, it is not possible to find signals of the nonlocality of the theory in cosmological observables since, even during inflation when energies are very high, nonlocality-induced corrections are expected to be very small.

Braneworld solutions for F(R) models with non-constant curvature

This work deal with braneworld scenarios with generalized gravity. We investigate models where the potential of the scalar field is polynomial or nonpolynomial. We obtain exact and approximated solutions for the scalar field, warp factor and energy density, in the complex scenario with no restriction on the scalar curvature. In particular, we describe the case where the brane may split, engendering internal structure, with the splitting caused by the same parameter that controls deviation from standard gravity.

Generation of Axion-Like Couplings via Quantum Corrections in a Lorentz Violating Background

Light pseudoscalars, or axion like particles (ALPs), are much studied due to their potential relevance to the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The most relevant coupling of ALPs from the viewpoint of current experimental searches is to the photon: in this work, we study the generation of this coupling as an effect of quantum corrections, originated from an underlying Lorentz violating background. Most interestingly, we show that the interaction so generated turns out to be Lorentz invariant, thus mimicking the standard ALPs coupling to the photon that is considered in the experiments. This consideration implies that violations of spacetime symmetries, much studied as possible consequences of physics in very high energy scales, might infiltrate in other realms of physics in unsuspected ways. Additionally, we conjecture that a similar mechanism can also generate Lorentz invariant couplings involving scalar particles and photons, playing a possible role in the phenomenology of Higgs bosons.

On the one-loop effective potential in the higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a nonconventional kinetic term

We explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential for a higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a nonconventional kinetic term. We consider the cases of minimal and nonminimal general Lagrangians. In particular, we find that in the minimal case the divergent part of the one-loop effective potential vanishes by reason of the chirality.

Three-dimensional Lorentz-violating action

We demonstrate the generation of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons-like Lorentz-breaking ``mixed" quadratic action via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of vector and scalar fields to the spinor field and study some features of the scalar QED with such a term. We show that the same term emerges through a nonpertubative method, namely the Julia-Toulouse approach of condensation of charges and defects.

Gödel-type universes and chronology protection in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

In the attempts toward a quantum gravity theory, general relativity faces a serious difficulty since it is non-renormalizable theory. Hořava-Lifshitz gravity offers a framework to circumvent this difficulty, by sacrificing the local Lorentz invariance at ultra-high energy scales in exchange of power-counting renormalizability. The Lorentz symmetry is expected to be recovered at low and medium energy scales. If gravitation is to be described by a Hořava-Lifshitz gravity theory there are a number of issues that ought to be reexamined in its context, including the question as to whether this gravity incorporates a chronology protection, or particularly if it allows Gödel-type solutions with violation of causality. We show that Hořava-Lifshitz gravity only allows hyperbolic Gödel-type space-times whose essential parameters $m$ and $ω$ are in the chronology respecting intervals, excluding therefore any noncausal Gödel-type space-times in the hyperbolic class. There emerges from our results that the famous noncausal Gödel model is not allowed in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The question as to whether this quantum gravity theory permits hyperbolic Gödel-type solutions in the chronology preserving interval of the essential parameters is also examined. We show that Hořava-Lifshitz gravity not only excludes the noncausal Gödel universe, but also rules out any hyperbolic Gödel-type solutions for physically well-motivated perfect-fluid matter content.

On the effective superpotential in the generic higher-derivative superfield supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theory

We formulate a generic three-dimensional superfield higher-derivative gauge theory coupled to the matter, which, in certain cases reduces to the three-dimensional scalar super-QED, or supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons or Chern-Simons theories with matter. For this theory, we explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential.

On the many-field f(R) brane

We consider the Randall-Sundrum braneworld theory with a single extra dimension of infinite extent to investigate generalized $f(R)$ braneworld models in the presence of several real scalar fields. In particular, we solve the modified Einstein equations for the case of flat brane, with zero cosmological constant, and for the case of bent brane, with a nonvanishing cosmological constant. In both cases we found explicit solutions for the scalar fields with analytical expressions for the respective warp factors.

The aether-modified gravity and the Godel metric

We formulate the nonminimal aether-modified gravity whose action represents itself as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action and the CPT-even Lorentz-breaking aether-like gravity term proposed by Carroll. For this theory, we show that the Gödel metric solves the modified Einstein equations under a corresponding modification of the matter, while, for the small Lorentz-breaking corrections, the matter turns out to be usual. On the other side, if the matter is suggested to be the same as in the usual general relativity, the Gödel metric is modified by additive aether terms.

Kaluza-Klein description of geometric phases in graphene

In this paper, we use the Kaluza-Klein approach to describe topological defects in a graphene layer. Using this approach, we propose a geometric model allowing to discuss the quantum flux in $K$-spin subspace. Within this model, the graphene layer with a topological defect is described by a four-dimensional metric, where the deformation produced by the topological defect is introduced via the three-dimensional part of metric tensor, while an Abelian gauge field is introduced via an extra dimension. We use this new geometric model to discuss the arising of topological quantum phases in a graphene layer with a topological defect.

Dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity and Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric

We study the conditions for the consistency of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. It turns out to be that in this situation the accelerated expansion of the Universe takes place, with the time dependence of the scale factor turns out to be similar to the case of presence of the Chaplygin gas. Also we found that this modification changes the total density of the Universe and therefore gives a nontrivial impact to a cosmological scenario.

On the electrodynamics in time-dependent linear media

In this work we study the classical electrodynamics in homogeneous conducting and nonconducting time-dependent linear media in the absence of charge sources. Surprisingly, we find that the time dependence of the permittivity gives rise to an additional term in the Ampere-Maxwell equation and an asymmetry between the electric and magnetic field wave equations. As special cases we consider a linear and an exponential growth of the permittivity, as well as a sinusoidal time-dependent permittivity.

Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in a three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model

Using the superfield formalism, we study the dynamical breaking of gauge symmetry in the N=1 three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons model, coupled to a complex scalar superfield with a quartic self-coupling. This is an analogue of the conformally invariant Coleman-Weinberg model in four spacetime dimensions. We show that a mass for the gauge and matter superfields are dynamically generated after two-loop corrections to the effective superpotential. We also discuss the N=2 extension of our work, showing that the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in such model is not feasible, because it is incompatible with perturbation theory.

Horava-Lifshitz modifications of the Casimir effect

We study the modifications induced by spacetime anisotropy on the Casimir effect in the case of two parallel plates. Nonperturbative and perturbative regimes are analyzed. In the first case the Casimir force either vanishes or it reverses its direction which, in any case, makes the proposal untenable. On the other hand, the perturbative model enables us to incorporate appropriately the effects of spacetime anisotropy.

On the aether-like Lorentz-breaking actions

We demonstrate the generation of the CPT-even, aether-like Lorentz-breaking actions for the scalar and electromagnetic fields via their appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling to spinor fields in three, four and five space-time dimensions. Besides, we show that the aether-like terms for the spinor field also can be generated as a consequence of the same couplings. Also we discuss the dispersion relations in the theories with aether-like Lorentz-breaking terms and find the tree-level effective (Breit) potential for fermion scattering and the one-loop effective potential corresponding to the action of the scalar field.

On the duality in four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking field theories

We consider new issues of duality in four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking field theories. In particular, we demonstrate that the arising of the aether-like Lorentz-breaking term is necessary in order for the 4D models to display the duality analog between the MCS and self-dual models in 3D. We further study the dispersion relations in both theories and discuss the physical contents of the models involved in this new dualilty.

Equivalence between supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models coupled to a matter spinor superfield

We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss.

Measuring magnetic profiles at manganite surfaces with monolayer resolution

The performance of manganite-based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) has suffered from reduced magnetization present at the junction interfaces that is ultimately responsible for the spin polarization of injected currents; this behavior has been attributed to a magnetic "dead layer" that typically extends a few unit cells into the manganite. X-ray magnetic scattering in resonant conditions (XRMS) is one of the most innovative and effective techniques to extract surface or interfacial magnetization profiles with subnanometer resolution, and has only recently been applied to oxide heterostructures. Here we present our approach to characterizing the surface and interfacial magnetization of such heterostructures using the XRMS technique, conducted at the BEAR beamline (Elettra synchrotron, Trieste). Measurements were carried out in specular reflectivity geometry, switching the left/right elliptical polarization of light as well the magnetization direction in the scattering plane. Spectra were collected across the Mn L2,3 edge for at least four different grazing angles in order to better analyse the interference phenomena. The resulting reflectivity spectra have been carefully fit to obtain the magnetization profiles, minimizing the number of free parameters as much as possible. Optical constants of the samples (real and imaginary part of the refractive index) in the interested frequency range are obtained through absorption measurements in two magnetization states and subsequent Kramers-Kronig transformation, allowing quantitative fits of the magnetization profile at different temperatures. We apply this method to the study of air-exposed surfaces of epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (001) films grown on SrTiO3 (001) substrates.

The three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace

We propose two alternative formulations for a three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace in which some of the fermionic coordinates obey Clifford anticommutation relations. For this superspace, we construct the supersymmetry generators satisfying standard anticommutation relations and the corresponding supercovariant derivatives. We formulate a scalar superfield theory in such a superspace and calculate its propagator. We also suggest a prescription for the introduction of interactions in such theories.

Complete Low-Energy Effective action in N=4 SYM: a Direct N=2 Supergraph Calculation

Using the covariant N=2 harmonic supergraph techniques we calculate the one-loop low-energy effective action of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb branch with gauge group SU(2) spontaneously broken down to U(1). The full dependence of the low-energy effective action on both the hypermultiplet and gauge fields is determined. The direct quantum calculation confirms the correctness of the exact N=4 SYM low-energy effective action derived in hep-th/0111062 on the purely algebraic ground by invoking a hidden N=2 supersymmetry which completes the manifest N=2 one to N=4. Our results provide an exhaustive solution to the problem of finding out the exact completely N=4 supersymmetric low-energy effective action for the theory under consideration.
