Competing 4f-electron dynamics in Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0 to 1): magnetic ordering emerging from the Kondo semiconducting state

We have carried out muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on polycrystalline samples of Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 and 1) to investigate the nature of the ground state (magnetic ordered versus paramagnetic) and the origin of the spin gap formation as evident from the bulk measurements in the end members. Our zero-field muSR spectra clearly reveal coherent two-frequency oscillations at low temperature in x=0, 0.3 and 0.5 samples, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment with TN=27, 26 and 21 K respectively. On the other hand the muSR spectra of x=0.8 and x=1 down to 1.4 K and 0.045 K, respectively exhibit a temperature independent Kubo-Toyabe term confirming a paramagnetic ground state. The long-range magnetic ordering in x=0.5 below 21 K has been confirmed through the neutron diffraction study. INS measurements of x=0 clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 8 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to an opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. Interestingly, at 4.5 K the spin gap excitation broadens in x=0.3 and exhibits two clear peaks at 8.4(3) and 12.0(5) meV in x=0.5. In the x=0.8 sample, which remains paramagnetic down to 1.2 K, there is a clear signature of a spin gap of 10-12 meV at 7 K, with a strong Q-dependent intensity. Evidence of a spin gap of 12.5(5) meV has also been found in x=1. The observation of a spin gap in the paramagnetic samples (x=0.8 and 1) is an interesting finding in this study and it challenges our understanding of the origin of the semiconducting gap in CeT2Al10 (T=Ru and Os) compounds in terms of hybridization gap opening only a small part of the Fermi surface, gapped spin waves, or a spin-dimer gap.

Phonon-roton modes of liquid 4He beyond the roton in MCM-41

We present neutron scattering measurements of the phonon-roton (P-R) mode of superfluid 4He confined in 47 ÅMCM-41 at T = 0.5 K at wave vectors, Q, beyond the roton wave vector (Q_R =1.92 Å−1^{-1}). Measurements beyond the roton require access to high wave vectors (up to Q = 4 Å−1^{-1}) with excellent energy resolution and high statistical precision. The present results show for the first time that at T = 0.5 K the P-R mode in MCM-41 extends out to wave-vector Q≃\simeq3.6 Å−1^-1 with the same energy and zero width (within precision) as observed in bulk superfluid 4He. Layer modes in the roton region are also observed. Specifically, the P-R mode energy, ωQω_Q, increases with Q for Q > QR and reaches a plateau at a maximum energy Q = 2Δ where Δ is the roton energy, Δ = 0.74 ±\pm 0.01 meV in MCM-41. This upper limit means the P-R mode decays to two rotons when its energy exceeds 2Δ. It also means that the P-R mode does not decay to two layers modes. If the P-R could decay to two layer modes, ωQω_Q would plateau at a lower energy, ωQω_Q = 2ΔL where ΔL = 0.60 meV is the energy of the roton like minimum of the layer mode. The observation of the P-R mode with energy up to 2Δ shows that the P-R mode and the layer modes are independent modes with apparently little interaction between them.

Evidence of a new quantum state of nano-confined water

Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering provides a means of directly and accurately measuring the momentum distribution of protons in water, which is determined primarily by the protons ground state wavefunction. We find that in water confined on scales of 20A, this wave function responds to the details of the confinement, corresponds to a strongly anharmonic local potential, shows evidence in some cases of coherent delocalization in double wells, and involves changes in zero point kinetic energy of the protons from -40 to +120 meV difference from that of bulk water at room temperature. This behavior appears to be a generic feature of nanoscale confinement. It is exhibited here in 16A inner diameter carbon nanotubes, two different hydrated proton exchange membranes(PEMs), Nafion 1120 and Dow 858, and has been seen earlier in xerogel and 14A diameter carbon nanotubes. The proton conductivity in the PEM samples correlates with the degree of coherent delocalization of the proton.

Inhomogeneous level splitting in Pr2−x_{2-x}Bix_xRu2_2O7_7

We report that Bi doping drives Prx_xBi2−x_{2-x}Ru2_2O7_7 from an antiferromagnetic insulator (x=2x=2) to a metallic paramagnet (x≈1x\approx 1) with a broad low TT maximum in C/TC/T. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations (ℏω≈1\hbarω\approx 1 meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to kBT>>ℏωk_BT>>\hbarω. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr3+^{3+} ground state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data.
