Signature of a randomness-driven spin-liquid state in a frustrated magnet

Collective behaviour of electrons, frustration induced quantum fluctuations and entanglement in quantum materials underlie some of the emergent quantum phenomena with exotic quasi-particle excitations that are highly relevant for technological applications. Herein, we present our thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation measurements, complemented by ab initio density functional theory and exact diagonalization results, on the recently synthesized frustrated antiferromagnet Li4CuTeO6, in which Cu2+ ions (S = 1/2) constitute disordered spin chains and ladders along the crystallographic [101] direction with weak random inter-chain couplings. Our thermodynamic experiments detect neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 45 mK despite the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments leading to a large effective Curie-Weiss temperature of -154 K. Muon spin relaxation results are consistent with thermodynamic results. The temperature and magnetic field scaling of magnetization and specific heat reveal a data collapse pointing towards the presence of random-singlets within a disorder-driven correlated and dynamic ground-state in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

Spin liquid state in a rare-earth hyperkagome lattice

Quantum fluctuations enhanced by frustration and subtle interplay between competing degrees of freedom offer an ideal ground to realize novel states with fractional quantum numbers in quantum materials that defy standard theoretical paradigms. Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled state wherein frustration induced strong quantum fluctuations preclude symmetry breaking phase transitions down to zero temperature without any order parameter. Experimental realizations of QSL in quantum materials with spin dimensionality greater than one is very rare. Here, we present our thermodynamic, nuclear magnetic resonance, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering studies of a new rare-earth hyperkagome compound Li3Yb3Te2O12 in which Yb3+ ions constitute a three dimensional spin-lattice without any detectable disorder. Our comprehensive experiments evince neither signature of magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 38 mK that suggest the realization of dynamic liquid-like ground state in this antiferromagnet. The ground state of this material is interpreted by a low energy Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom with short range spin correlations. The present results demonstrate a viable basis to explore spin-orbit driven enigmatic correlated quantum states in a new class of rare-earth based three dimensional frustrated magnets that may open new avenues in theoretical and experimental search for spin liquids.

Structural 130-K Phase Transition and Emergence of a Two-Ion Kondo State in HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga Explored by $^{69,71}$Ga Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We have studied the microscopic magnetic properties, the nature of the 130-K phase transition, and the ground state in the recently synthesized compound Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga by use of $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra clearly show an unusual phase transition at $T_t$ $\sim$ 130 K yielding a splitting of the high-temperature single NQR line into two clearly resolved NQR lines, providing evidence for two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites. The NQR frequencies are in good agreement with fully-relativistic calculations of the band structure. Our NQR results indicate the absence of magnetic or charge order down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/$T_1$, shows three distinct regimes, with onset temperatures at $T_t$ and 2 K. The temperature-independent 1/$T_1$, observed between $T_t$ and 2 K, crosses over to a Korringa process, 1/$T_1$ $\propto$ $T$, below $\sim$ 2 K, which evidences a rare two-ion Kondo scenario: the system goes into a dense Kondo coherent state at 2.0 and 0.8 K for the two different Ga sites.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Non-Fermi Liquid System CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ Investigated Using $μ$SR

Reduced dimensionality offers a crucial information in deciding the type of the quantum ground state in heavy fermion materials. Here we have examined stoichiometric CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound, which crystallizes in a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure with Ga-Ce-Co chains along the $c$-axis. The low-temperature behavior of magnetic susceptibility ($χ\sim-\ln T$), heat capacity ($C_p/T\sim-\ln T$), and resistivity ($ρ\sim T^{n}$) firmly confirm the non-Fermi liquid ground state of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$. We studied the low-energy spin dynamics of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound utilizing zero field (ZF-) and longitudinal field (LF-) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurement reveals the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70 mK, and interestingly below 1 K, the electronic relaxation rate sharply rises, intimating the appearance of low energy quantum spin fluctuations in CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$.

Anisotropic field-induced ordering in the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid NaYbSe$_2$

High-quality single crystals of NaYbSe$_2$, which resembles a perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet without the intrinsic disorder, are investigated by magnetization and specific heat, as well as the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The low-field measurements confirm the absence of any spin freezing or long-range magnetic order down to 50~mK, which suggests a quantum spin liquid ground (QSL) state with gapless excitations. The instability of the QSL state is observed upon applying magnetic fields. For the $H\bot c$ direction, a field-induced magnetic phase transition is observed above 2~T from the $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data, agreeing with a clear $\frac{M_s}{3}$ plateau of $M(H)$, which is associated with an up-up-down (uud) spin arrangement. For the $H\|c$ direction, a field-induced transition could be evidenced at a much higher field range (9 - 21~T). The $^{23}$Na NMR measurements provide microscopic evidence for field-induced ordering for both directions. A reentrant behavior of $T_{\rm N}$, originating from the thermal and quantum spin fluctuations, is observed for both directions. The anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\perp}\simeq$ 4.7~K and $J_z\simeq$2.33~K are extracted from the modified bond-dependent XXZ model for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. The absence of magnetic long-range order at zero fields is assigned to the effect of strong bond-frustration, arising from the complex spin-orbit entangled $4f$ ground state. Finally, we derive the highly anisotropic magnetic phase diagram, which is discussed in comparison with the existing theoretical models for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets.

Converse effect of pressure on quadrupolar and magnetic transition in Ce$_{3}$Pd$_{20}$Si$_{6}$

The heavy fermion compound Ce$_{3}$Pd$_{20}$Si$_{6}$ displays unconventional quantum criticality as the lower of two consecutive phase transitions is fully suppressed by magnetic field. Here we report on the effects of pressure as additional tuning parameter. Specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a converse effect of pressure on the two transitions, leading to the merging of both transitions at 6.2 kbar. The field-induced quantum criticality is robust under pressure tuning. We rationalize our findings within an extended version of the global phase diagram for antiferromagnetic heavy fermion quantum criticality.

Crystal field states of Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to determine the crystal field states of the Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. Both the compounds crystallize in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space group Pm-3n) in which the Ce atoms occupy two distinct crystallographic sites with cubic (m-3) and tetragonal (-4m.2) point symmetries. The INS data of CeRuSn3 reveal the presence of a broad excitation centered around 6-8 meV which is accounted by a model based on crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. On the other hand, the INS data of isostructural CeRhSn3 reveal three CEF excitations around 7.0, 12.2 and 37.2 meV. The neutron intensity sum rule indicates that the Ce ions at both cubic and tetragonal Ce sites are in Ce3+ state in both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. The CEF level schemes for both the compounds are deduced. We estimate the Kondo temperature T_K = 3.1(2) K for CeRuSn3 from neutron quasielastic linewidth in excellent agreement with that determined from the scaling of magnetoresistance which gives T_K = 3.2(1) K. For CeRhSn3 the neutron quasielastic linewidth gives T_K = 4.6 K. For both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3, the ground state of Ce3+ turns out to be a quartet for the cubic site and a doublet for the tetragonal site.

Field-insensitive heavy fermion features and phase transition in the caged-structure quasi-skutterudite Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$

The robust field-insensitive heavy fermion features in Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ and the magnetic phase transition at $T_N \approx$ 5~K are studied using magnetization $M(T)$, specific heat $C_p(T)$, resistivity $ρ(T)$ and thermal conductivity $κ_T(T)$. The average crystal structure of Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ conforms to the cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}n$ however, signatures of subtle structural distortions are obtained from the x ray data. The magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, follows a modified Curie-Weiss law indicating the presence of crystal fields of Sm$^{3+}$ and the significance of van Vleck terms. No sign of ferromagnetism is observed in $M(H)$ of Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which yields only 0.025~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/f.u.-Sm at 2~K, 7~T. The Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ\approx$ 220~mJ/mol-Sm K$^2$, estimated from the analysis of low temperature specific heat suggests the formation of heavy quasi particles at low temperature. Though a ln$T$ dependence of $ρ(T)$ is observed till 60~K, the resistivity behavior is accounted for by assuming a two-band model for activated behavior of charge carriers. The field scans of resistivity, $ρ(H)$, below $T_N$ display significant nonlinearity while those above the $T_N$ are more metal-like. Low values of thermal conductivity, $κ_T(T)$, are observed in Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ however, displaying an anomaly at $T_N$ which signifies magnetoelastic coupling. A fairly high value of Seebeck coefficient, $S \approx$ 40~$μ$V/K is observed at 300~K. We identify Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ as a low charge carrier density system with unusual field-insensitive heavy fermion features very similar to the filled skutterudites.

Incommensurate spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism in CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B

The newly discovered Ising-type ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B exhibits an additional phase transition at $T_\textrm{N}$ = 14.2 K before entering the ferromagnetic ground state at $T_\textrm{C}$ = 12.8 K. We clarify the nature of this transition through high resolution neutron diffraction measurements. The data reveal the presence of a longitudinal incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) in the temperature range of $T_\textrm{C}<T<T_\textrm{N}$. The propagation vector ${\bf q} \sim (0,0,0.148)$ is nearly temperature independent in this region and discontinuously locks into ${\bf q} = 0$ at $T_\textrm{C}$. Mean-field calculations of an effective Ising model indicate that the modulated SDW phase is stabilized by a strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. This makes CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B a particularly attractive model system to study the global phase diagram of ferromagnetic heavy-fermion metals under influence of magnetic frustration.

Magnetic structures and magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO$_3$ studied by neutron powder diffraction

The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO$_3$ studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_N \approx$ 295~K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR} \approx$ 26~K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and $T^\mathrm{R}_N \approx$ 2~K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295~K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ belongs to the irreducible representation $Γ_4$ ($G_xA_yF_z$ or $Pb'n'm$). A mixed-domain structure of ($Γ_1 + Γ_4$) is found at 250~K which remains stable down to the spin re-orientation transition at $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR}\approx$ 26~K. Below 26~K and above 250~K, the majority phase ($> 80\%$) is that of $Γ_4$. Below 10~K the high-temperature phase $Γ_4$ remains stable till 2~K. At 2~K, Tb develops a magnetic moment value of 0.6(2)~$μ_\mathrm{B}/$f.u. and orders long-range in $F_z$ compatible with the $Γ_4$ representation. Our study confirms the magnetic phase transitions reported already in a single crystal of TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ and, in addition, reveals the presence of mixed magnetic domains. The ratio of these magnetic domains as a function of temperature is estimated from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data. Indications of short-range magnetic correlations are present in the low-$Q$ region of the neutron diffraction patterns at $T < T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR}$. These results should motivate further experimental work devoted to measure electric polarization and magnetocapacitance of TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$.

Magnetic, specific heat and electrical transport properties of Frank-Kasper cage compounds RTM$_2$Al$_{20}$ [R = Eu,Gd and La ; TM = V,Ti]

Single crystals of Frank-Kasper compounds RTM$_2$Al$_{20}$ (R = Eu, Gd and La; TM = V and Ti) were grown by self-flux method and their physical properties were investigated through magnetization ($M$), magnetic susceptibility ($χ$), specific heat ($C_P$) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction studies and structural analysis showed that these compounds crystallize in the cubic crystal structure with the space group $Fd\overline{3}m$. The magnetic susceptibility for the compounds EuTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ and GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ showed a sudden jump below the N{é}el temperature $T_N$ indicative of plausible double magnetic transition. Specific heat ($C_P$) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements also confirm the first-order magnetic transition (FOMT) and possible double magnetic transitions. Temperature variation of heat capacity showed a sharp phase transition and huge $C_P$ value for the (Eu/Gd)Ti$_2$Al$_{20}$ compounds Full width at half-maximum (FWHM) $<$ 0.2 K) which is reminiscent of a first-order phase transition and a unique attribute among RTM$_2$Al$_{20}$ compounds. We observed clear anomaly between heating and cooling cycle in temperature-time relaxation curve for the compounds GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (2.38 $K$) and EuTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (3.2 $K$) which is indicating a thermal arrest due to the latent heat. The temperature variation of $S_{mag}$ for GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ saturates to a value $0.95R\ln8$ while the other magnetic systems exhibited still lower entropy saturation values in the high temperature limit. Resistivity measurements showed that all the samples behave as normal Fermi liquid type compounds and $ρ(T)$ due to electron-phonon scattering follows Bloch-Gr$\ddot{\textrm u}$neisen-Mott relation in the paramagnetic region.

Magneto-transport properties of CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$: Similarities to URu$_2$Si$_2$

We report on magneto-transport properties of the Kondo semiconducting compound CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$, focusing on its exotic phase below $T_0$ = 27 K. In this phase, an excess thermal conductivity $κ$ emerges and is gradually suppressed by magnetic field, strikingly resembling those observed in the hidden-order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$. Our analysis indicates that low-energy magnetic excitation is the most likely origin, as was also proposed for URu$_2$Si$_2$ recently, despite the largely reduced magnetic moments. Likewise, other transport properties such as resistivity, thermopower and Nernst effect exhibit distinct features characterizing the very different charge dynamics above and below $T_0$, sharing similarities to URu$_2$Si$_2$, too. Given the exotic nature of the ordered phases in both compounds, whether a unified interpretation to all these observations exists appears to be extremely interesting.

Temperature dependence of exchange biased multiferroic $ \mathbf{BiFeO_3} $/$ \mathbf{Ni_{81}Fe_{19}} $ polycrystalline bilayer

The temperature dependence of exchange bias properties are studied in polycrystalline $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} / \mathrm{Ni_{81}Fe_{19}} $ bilayers, for different $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thicknesses. Using a field cooling protocol, a non-monotonic behavior of the exchange bias field is shown in the exchange-biased bilayers. Another thermal protocol, the Soeya protocol, related to the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thermal activation energies was carried out and reveals a two-step evolution of the exchange bias field. The results of these two different protocols are similar to the ones obtained for measurements previously reported on epitaxial $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $, indicating a driving mechanism independent of the long-range crystalline arrangement (i.e., epitaxial or polycrystalline). An intrinsic property of $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ is proposed as being the driving mechanism for the thermal dependent magnetization reversal: the canting of the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ spins leading to a biquadratic contribution to the exchange coupling. The temperature dependence of the magnetization reversal angular behavior agrees with the presence of such a biquadratic contribution for exchange biased bilayers studied here.

Broken time-reversal symmetry probed by muon spin relaxation in the caged type superconductor Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$

The superconducting state of the caged type compound Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ has been investigated by using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR) measurements and the results interpreted on the basis of the group theoretical classifications of the possible pairing symmetries and a simple model of the resulting quasiparticle spectra. Our zero-field $μ$SR measurements clearly reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that the superconducting state in this material is characterized by the broken time-reversal symmetry. Further the analysis of temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth measured using the transverse field $μ$SR measurements suggest an isotropic $s$-wave character for the superconducting gap. This is in agreement with the heat capacity behavior and we show that it can be interpreted in terms of a non unitary triplet state with point nodes and an open Fermi surface.

Contrasting chemical pressure effect on the moment direction in the Kondo semiconductor CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru,Os)

The opening of a spin gap in the orthorhombic compounds CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) is followed by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$ = 27 K and 28.5 K, respectively, with a small ordered moment (0.29$-$0.34$μ_B$) along the $c-$axis, which is not an easy axis of the crystal field (CEF). In order to investigate how the moment direction and the spin gap energy change with 10\% La doping in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$T$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) and also to understand the microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state, we here report on magnetic, transport, and thermal properties, neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on these compounds. Our INS study reveals the persistence of spin gaps of 7 meV and 10 meV in the 10\% La-doped T = Ru and Os compounds, respectively. More interestingly our ND study shows a very small ordered moment of 0.18 $μ_B$ along the $b-$axis (moment direction changed compared with the undoped compound), in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$, however a moment of 0.23 $μ_B$ still along the $c-$axis in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Os$_2$Al$_{10}$. This contrasting behavior can be explained by a different degree of hybridization in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$, being stronger in the latter than in the former. Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) studies on Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), reveal the presence of coherent frequency oscillations indicating a long$-$range magnetically ordered ground state for $x$ = 0 to 0.5, but an almost temperature independent Kubo$-$Toyabe response between 45 mK and 4 K for $x$ = 0.7. We will compare the results of the present investigations with those reported on the electron and hole$-$doping in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Destruction of Kondo effect in cubic heavy fermion compound Ce3Pd20Si6

How ground states of quantum matter transform between one another reveals deep insights into the mechanisms stabilizing them. Correspondingly, quantum phase transitions are explored in numerous materials classes, with heavy fermion compounds being among the most prominent ones. Recent studies in an anisotropic heavy fermion compound have shown that different types of transitions are induced by variations of chemical or external pressure [1-3], raising the question of the extent to which heavy fermion quantum criticality is universal. To make progress, it is essential to broaden both the materials basis and the microscopic parameter variety. Here, we identify a cubic heavy fermion material as exhibiting a field-induced quantum phase transition, and show how the material can be used to explore one extreme of the dimensionality axis. The transition between two different ordered phases is accompanied by an abrupt change of Fermi surface, reminiscent of what happens across the field-induced antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition in the anisotropic YbRh2Si2. This finding leads to a materials-based global phase diagram -- a precondition for a unified theoretical description.

Large Seebeck Effect by Charge-Mobility Engineering

The Seebeck effect describes the generation of an electric potential in a conducting solid exposed to a temperature gradient. Besides fundamental relevance in solid state physics, it serves as a key quantity to determine the performance of functional thermoelectric materials. In most cases, it is dominated by an energy-dependent electronic density of states at the Fermi level, in line with the prevalent efforts toward superior thermoelectrics through the engineering of electronic structure. Here, we demonstrate an alternative source for the Seebeck effect based on charge-carrier relaxation: A charge mobility that changes rapidly with temperature can result in a sizeable addition to the Seebeck coefficient. This new Seebeck source is demonstrated explicitly for Ni-doped CoSb3, where a dramatic mobility change occurs due to the crossover between two different charge-relaxation regimes. Our findings unveil the origin of pronounced features in the Seebeck coefficient of many other elusive materials characterized by a significant mobility mismatch. As the physical origin for the latter can vary greatly, our proposal provides a unifying framework for the understanding of a large panoply of thermoelectric phenomena. When utilized appropriately, this effect can also provide a novel route to the design of improved thermoelectric materials for applications in solid-state cooling or power generation.

$μ$SR and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$

The magnetic state of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$ has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. CeNiC$_2$ exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N_1}$ = 20 K, $T_{N_2}$ = 10 K and $T_{N_3}$ = 2.5 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below 20 K is confirmed by the observation of oscillations in the $μ$SR spectra between 10 and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. INS studies reveal two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations around 8 and 30 meV. INS data have been analyzed using a CEF model and the wave functions were evaluated. We also calculated the direction and magnitude of the ground state moment using CEF wave functions and compare the results with that proposed from the neutron diffraction. Our CEF model correctly predicts that the moments order along the $b-$axis (or $y$-axis) and the observed magnetic moment is 0.687(5) $μ_B$, which is higher than the moment observed from the neutron diffraction (0.25 $μ_B$/Ce). We attribute the observed reduced moment due to the Kondo screening effect.

Anomalous change of the magnetic moment direction by hole doping in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$

We present a detailed investigation of the hole (3\% Re) doping effect on the polycrystalline CeRu$_{2}$Al$_{10}$ sample by magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), and neutron scattering (both elastic and inelastic) measurements. CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is an exceptional cerium compound with an unusually high Neel temperature of 27 K. Here we study the stability of the unusual magnetic order by means of controlled doping, and we uncover further surprising attributes of this phase transition. The heat capacity, resistivity and $μ$SR measurements reveal an onset of magnetic ordering below 23 K, while a broad peak at 31 K (i.e. above $T_N$), has been observed in the temperature dependent susceptibility, indicating an opening of a spin gap above $T_N$. Our important finding, from the neutron diffraction, is that the compound orders antiferromagnetically with a propagation vector $\bf k$ = (1 0 0) and the ordered state moment is 0.20(1)$μ_B$ along the $b-$axis. This is in sharp contrast to the undoped compound, which shows AFM ordering at 27 K with the ordered moment of 0.39(3)$μ_B$ along the $c-$axis. Similar to CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ our inelastic neutron scattering study on the Re doped shows a sharp spin gap-type excitation near 8 meV at 5 K, but with slightly reduced intensity compared to the undoped compound. Further the excitation broadens and shifts to lower energy ($\le$ 4 meV) near 35 K. These results suggest that the low temperature magnetic properties of the hole doped sample is governed by the competition between the anisotropic hybridization effect and crystal field anisotropy as observed in hole-doped CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Contrasting electron and hole doping effects on the spin gap of the caged type Kondo semimetal CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$: A muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering investigation

The effects of electron (Ir) and hole (Re) doping on the hybridization gap and antiferromagnetic order have been studied by magnetization, muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR), and inelastic neutron scattering on the polycrystalline samples of Ce(Os$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0.08 and 0.15) and CeOs$_{1.94}$Re$_{0.06}$Al$_{10}$. $μ^+$SR spectra clearly reveals magnetic ordering below 20 and 10 K for $x$ = 0.08 and 0.15 samples respectively with a very weak signature of oscillations of the muon initial asymmetry at very short time scale. Our important findings are that small amount of electron doping (i) completely suppress the inelastic magnetic excitations near 11 meV down to 2K, which were observed in the undoped compound, and the response transforms into a broad quasielastic response and (ii) the internal field at the corresponding muon site is remarkably enhanced by about ten times compared with the parent compound. On the other hand with small amount of hole (3\% Re) doping the intensity of the inelastic magnetic excitations near 11 meV is reduced significantly. The main origin of the observed doping effect is an extra 5$d$ electrons being carried by Ir and a hole carried by Re compared with that the Os atom. The obtained results demonstrate a great sensitivity of the carrier doping and provides additional ways to study their anomalous magnetic properties.

Investigations of the singlet ground state system: PrIrSi3

We report our comprehensive study of physical properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrIrSi3 investigated by dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), thermo-remnant magnetization M(t), ac magnetic susceptibility chi_ac(T), specific heat C_p(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A magnetic phase transition is marked by a sharp anomaly at T_tr = 12.2 K in chi(T) measured at low applied fields which is also reflected in the C_p(T) data through a weak anomaly at 12 K. An irreversibility between the zero field cooled and field cooled chi(T) data below 12.2 K and a very large relaxation time of M(t) indicates the presence of ferromagnetic correlation. The magnetic part of specific heat shows a broad Schottky-type anomaly near 40~K due to the crystal electric field (CEF) effect. An extremely small value of magnetic entropy below 12 K suggests a CEF-split singlet ground state which is confirmed from our analysis of INS data. The INS spectra show two prominent inelastic excitations at 8.5 meV and 18.5 meV that could be well accounted by a CEF model. The CEF splitting energy between the ground state singlet and the first excited doublet is found to be 92 K. Our muSR data reveal a possible magnetic ordering below 30 K which is much higher than that found from the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This could be due to the presence of short range correlations well above the long range magnetic ordering or due to the electronic changes induced by muons. The induced moment magnetism in the singlet ground state system PrIrSi3 with such a large splitting energy of 92 K is quite surprising.

Momentum-space structure of quasielastic spin fluctuations in Ce3Pd20Si6

Among heavy-fermion metals, Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$ is one of the heaviest-electron systems known to date. Here we used high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to observe low-energy magnetic scattering from a single crystal of this compound in the paramagnetic state. We investigated its temperature dependence and distribution in momentum space, which was not accessible in earlier measurements on polycrystalline samples. At low temperatures, a quasielastic magnetic response with a half-width Γ=0.1 meV persists with varying intensity all over the Brillouin zone. It forms a broad hump centered at the (111) scattering vector, surrounded by minima of intensity at (002), (220) and equivalent wave vectors. The momentum-space structure distinguishes this signal from a simple crystal-field excitation at 0.31 meV, suggested previously, and rather lets us ascribe it to short-range dynamical correlations between the neighboring Ce ions, mediated by the itinerant heavy f-electrons via the RKKY mechanism. With increasing temperature, the energy width of the signal follows the conventional T$\scriptstyle^{1/2}$ law, Γ(T) = Γ$_0$ + A*T$\scriptstyle^{1/2}$. The momentum-space symmetry of the quasielastic response suggests that it stems from the simple-cubic Ce sublattice occupying the 8c Wyckoff site, whereas the crystallographically inequivalent 4a site remains magnetically silent in this material.

Physical properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3: A μSR study

The results of heat capacity C_p(T, H) and electrical resistivity ρ(T,H) measurements down to 0.35 K as well as muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) measurements on a noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3 are presented. Powder neutron diffraction confirmed the reported noncentrosymmetric body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure (space group I4\,mm) of LaIrSi3. The bulk superconductivity is observed below T_c = 0.72(1) K. The intrinsic ΔC_e/γ_n T_c = 1.09(3) is significantly smaller than the BCS value of 1.43, and this reduction is accounted by the α-model of BCS superconductivity. The analysis of the superconducting state C_e(T) data by the single-band α-model indicates a moderately anisotropic order parameter with the s-wave gap Δ(0)/k_B T_c = 1.54(2) which is lower than the BCS value of 1.764. Our estimates of various normal and superconducting state parameters indicate a weakly coupled electron-phonon driven type-I s-wave superconductivity in LaIrSi3. The \muSR results also confirm the conventional type-I superconductivity in LaIrSi3 with a preserved time reversal symmetry and hence a singlet pairing superconducting ground state.

Change of magnetic ground state by light electron-doping in CeOs2Al10

The effect of Ir substitution for Os in CeOs2Al10, with an unusually high Neel temperature of T~28.5K, has been studied by high-resolution neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. A small amount of Ir (~ 8%) results in a pronounced change of the magnetic structure of the Ce-sublattice. The new magnetic ground state is controlled by the single ion anisotropy and implies antiferromagnetic arrangement of the Ce-moments along the a-axis, as expected from the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility. The value of the ordered moments, 0.92(1) mu_B, is substantially bigger than in the undoped compound, whereas the transition temperature is reduced down to 21K. A comparison of the observed phenomena with the recently studied CeRu1.9Rh0.1Al10 system, exhibiting similar behaviour [A. Kondo et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 054709 (2013)], strongly suggests the electron doping as the main origin of the ground state changes. This provides a new way of exploring the anomalous magnetic properties of the Ce(Ru/Os)2Al10 compounds.

Competing 4f-electron dynamics in Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0 to 1): magnetic ordering emerging from the Kondo semiconducting state

We have carried out muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on polycrystalline samples of Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 and 1) to investigate the nature of the ground state (magnetic ordered versus paramagnetic) and the origin of the spin gap formation as evident from the bulk measurements in the end members. Our zero-field muSR spectra clearly reveal coherent two-frequency oscillations at low temperature in x=0, 0.3 and 0.5 samples, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment with TN=27, 26 and 21 K respectively. On the other hand the muSR spectra of x=0.8 and x=1 down to 1.4 K and 0.045 K, respectively exhibit a temperature independent Kubo-Toyabe term confirming a paramagnetic ground state. The long-range magnetic ordering in x=0.5 below 21 K has been confirmed through the neutron diffraction study. INS measurements of x=0 clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 8 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to an opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. Interestingly, at 4.5 K the spin gap excitation broadens in x=0.3 and exhibits two clear peaks at 8.4(3) and 12.0(5) meV in x=0.5. In the x=0.8 sample, which remains paramagnetic down to 1.2 K, there is a clear signature of a spin gap of 10-12 meV at 7 K, with a strong Q-dependent intensity. Evidence of a spin gap of 12.5(5) meV has also been found in x=1. The observation of a spin gap in the paramagnetic samples (x=0.8 and 1) is an interesting finding in this study and it challenges our understanding of the origin of the semiconducting gap in CeT2Al10 (T=Ru and Os) compounds in terms of hybridization gap opening only a small part of the Fermi surface, gapped spin waves, or a spin-dimer gap.

Magnetic ordering with reduced cerium moments in hole-doped CeOs2Al10

The lightly hole-doped system CeOs1.94Re0.06Al10 has been studied by muon spin relaxation and neutron diffraction measurements. A long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ce-sublattice with substantially reduced value of the magnetic moment 0.18(1) μ_B has been found below T_N = 21 K. Similar to the undoped parent compound, the magnetic ground state of CeOs1.94Re0.06Al10 preserves the anomalous direction of the ordered moments along the c-axis. The obtained result reveals the crucial difference between electron- and hole-doping effects on the magnetic ordering in CeOs2Al10. The former suppresses the anisotropic c-f hybridization and promotes localized Ce moments. On the contrary, the latter increases the hybridization and shifts the system towards delocalized non-magnetic state.

muSR and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of the caged type Kondo semimetals: CeT2Al10 (T=Fe, Ru and Os)

Recently the Ce-based caged-type compounds having general formula CeT2Al10 (T=Fe, Ru and Os) have generated considerable interest due to the Kondo semiconducting paramagnetic ground state (down to 40 mK) observed in CeFe2Al10 and anomalously high magnetic ordering temperature with a spin gap formation at low temperatures in Kondo semimetals CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10. The formation of long-range magnetic ordering out of the Kondo semiconducting/semimetallic state itself is extraordinary and these are the first examples of this enigmatic coexistence of electronic ground states. These compounds also exhibit strong anisotropy in the magnetic and transport properties, which has been explained on the basis of single ion crystal electric field (CEF) anisotropy in the presence of strongly anisotropic hybridization between localised 4f-electron and conduction electrons. Further they also exhibit a remarkable modification of magnetic and transport properties with doping on Ce, or T or Al sites. In this review we briefly discuss the bulk properties of these compounds, giving a detailed discussion on our muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) investigations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results.

Anisotropic optical conductivity of the putative Kondo insulator CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$

Kondo insulators and in particular their non-cubic representatives have remained poorly understood. Here we report on the development of an anisotropic energy pseudogap in the tetragonal compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ employing optical reflectivity measurements in broad frequency and temperature ranges, and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory calculations. The calculations provide evidence for a Kondo insulator-like response within the $a-a$ plane and a more metallic response along the c axis and qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations, helping to identify their origin.

Full Relativistic Electronic Structure and Fermi Surface Sheets of the First Honeycomb-Lattice Pnictide Superconductor SrPtAs

We report full-potential density functional theory (DFT)-based {\it ab initio} band structure calculations to investigate electronic structure properties of the first pnictide superconductor with a honeycomb-lattice structure: SrPtAs. As a result, electronic bands, density of states, Fermi velocities and the topology of the Fermi surface for SrPtAs are obtained. These quantities are discussed in comparison to the first available experimental data. Predictions for future measurements are provided.

CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$: heavy fermions emerging from a Kondo-insulating state

The combination of low-temperature specific-heat and nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements reveals important information of the ground-state properties of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, which has been proposed as a rare example of a tetragonal Kondo-insulator (KI). The NMR spin-latticerelaxation rate $1/T_1$ deviates from the Korringa law below 100 K signaling the onset of an energy gap $ΔE_g1/k_B \simeq 30$K. This gap is stable against magnetic fields up to 10 T. Below 10 K, however, unusual low-energy excitations of in-gap states are observed, which depend strongly on the field H. The specific heat C detects these excitations in the form of an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= C(T)/T$ : In zero field, $γ$ increases steeply below 5 K, reaching a maximum at 0.1 K, and then saturates at $γ= 0.6$ J/molK$^2$. This maximum is shifted to higher temperatures with increasing field suggesting a residual density of states at the Fermi level developing a spin gap $ΔE_g2$. A simple model, based on two narrow quasiparticle bands located at the Fermi level - which cross the Fermi level in zero field at 0.022 states/meV f.u. - can account qualitatively as well as quantitatively for the measured observables. In particular, it is demonstrated that fitting our data of both specific heat and NMR to the model, incorporating a Ce magnetic moment of $μ= ΔE_g1/μ_{0H} \simeq 1 μ_B$, leads to the prediction of the field dependence of the gap. Our measurements rule out the presence of a quantum critical point as the origin for the enhanced $γ$ in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ and suggest that this arises rather from correlated, residual in-gap states at the Fermi level. This work provides a fundamental route for future investigations into the phenomenon of narrow-gap formation in the strongly correlated class of system

Direct evidence of long-range ordering of reduced magnetic moments in the spin-gap compound CeOs2Al10 through muon spin relaxation investigations

We have carried out neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering investigations on a polycrystalline sample of CeOs2Al10 to investigate the nature of the phase transition observed near 29 K in the resistivity and heat capacity. Our muSR data clearly reveal coherent frequency oscillations below 28 K, indicating the presence of an internal field at the muon site, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment below 28 K. Upon cooling the sample below 15 K, unusual behaviour of the temperature dependent muSR frequencies may indicate either a change of the muon site, consistent with the observation of superstructure reflections in electron diffraction or a change of the ordered magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction data do not reveal any clear sign of either magnetic Bragg peaks or superlattice reflections. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 11 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. The magnitude of the spin-gap (11 meV) as derived from the INS peak position agrees very well with the gap value as estimated from the bulk properties.

Long-range magnetic order in CeRu2Al10 evidenced by muSR and neutron diffraction

The low temperature state of CeRu2Al10 has been studied by neutron powder diffraction and muon spin relaxation (muSR). By combining both techniques, we prove that the transition occurring below T*~27K, which has been the subject of considerable debate, is unambiguously magnetic due to the ordering of the Ce sublattice. The magnetic structure with propagation vector k=(1,0,0) involves collinear antiferromagnetic alignment of the Ce moments along the c-axis of the Cmcm space group with a reduced moment of 0.34(2)mu_B. No structural changes within the resolution limit have been detected below the transition temperature. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic Bragg peaks and the muon precession frequency show an anomaly around T2~12 K indicating a possible second transition.
