Magnetic molecular orbitals in MnSi

A large body of knowledge about magnetism is attained from models of interacting spins, which usually reside on magnetic ions. Proposals beyond the ionic picture are uncommon and seldom verified by direct observations in conjunction with microscopic theory. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering to study the itinerant near-ferromagnet MnSi, we find that the system's fundamental magnetic units are interconnected, extended molecular orbitals consisting of three Mn atoms each, rather than individual Mn atoms. This result is further corroborated by magnetic Wannier orbitals obtained by ab initio calculations. It contrasts the ionic picture with a concrete example, and presents a novel regime of the spin waves where the wavelength is comparable to the spatial extent of the molecular orbitals. Our discovery brings important insights into not only the magnetism of MnSi, but also a broad range of magnetic quantum materials where structural symmetry, electron itinerancy and correlations act in concert.

Single-ion properties of the transverse-field Ising model material CoNb$_2$O$_6$

CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co$^{2+}$ acts as a pseudo-spin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic pseudo-spin 1/2 Hamiltonian. These terms are expected to be controlled in part by single-ion physics, namely the wavefunction for the pseudo-spin 1/2 angular momentum doublet. Here, we present the results of both inelastic neutron scattering measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on CoNb$_2$O$_6$, which elucidate the single-ion physics of Co$^{2+}$ in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ for the first time. We find that the system is well-described by an intermediate spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonian, and the ground state is a well-isolated Kramers doublet with an anisotropic $g$-tensor. We provide the approximate wavefunctions for this doublet, which we expect will be useful in theoretical investigations of the anisotropic exchange interactions.

Spin excitations in the kagome-lattice metallic antiferromagnet Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$Sn

Kagome-lattice materials have attracted tremendous interest due to the broad prospect for seeking superconductivity, quantum spin liquid states, and topological electronic structures. Among them, the transition-metal kagome lattices are high-profile objects for the combination of topological properties, rich magnetism, and multiple-orbital physics. Here we report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin dynamics of a kagome-lattice antiferromagnetic metal Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$Sn. Although the magnetic excitations can be observed up to $\sim$250 meV, well-defined spin waves are only identified below $\sim$90 meV and can be modeled using Heisenberg exchange with ferromagnetic in-plane nearest-neighbor coupling $J_1$, in-plane next-nearest-neighbor coupling $J_2$, and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling $J_c$ under linear spin-wave theory. Above $\sim$90 meV, the spin waves enter the itinerant Stoner continuum and become highly damped particle-hole excitations. At the K point of the Brillouin zone, we reveal a possible band crossing of the spin wave, which indicates a potential Dirac magnon. Our results uncover the evolution of the spin excitations from the planar AFM state to the axial AFM state in Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$Sn, solve the magnetic Hamiltonian for both states, and confirm the significant influence of the itinerant magnetism on the spin excitations.

Spin waves and magnetic exchange Hamiltonian in CrSBr

CrSBr is an air-stable 2D van der Waals semiconducting magnet with great technological promise, but its atomic-scale magnetic interactions -- crucial information for high-frequency switching -- are poorly understood. We present an experimental study to determine the CrSBr magnetic exchange Hamiltonian and bulk magnon spectrum. We confirm the $A$-type antiferromagnetic order using single crystal neutron diffraction. We also measure the magnon dispersions using inelastic neutron scattering and rigorously fit the excitation modes to a spin wave model. The magnon spectrum is well described by an intra-plane ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange model with seven nearest in-plane exchanges. This fitted exchange Hamiltonian enables theoretical predictions of CrSBr behavior: as one example, we use the fitted Hamiltonian to predict the presence of chiral magnon edge modes with a spin-orbit enhanced CrSBr heterostructure.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu$_6[$Si$_6$O$_{18}]\cdot 6$H$_2$O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to $21~$T and magnetization measurements up to $30~$T. In zero field, the Cu$^{2+}$-moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the $c$-axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the $c$-axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at $B^*=12.2~$T at $1.5~$K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around $B^*$. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Magnetic exchange interactions in the van der Waals layered antiferromagnet MnPSe3

Two-dimensional van der Waals compounds with magnetic ions on a honeycomb lattice are hosts to a variety of exotic behavior. The magnetic interactions in one such compound, MnPSe$_3$, are investigated with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. Magnetic excitations are observed in the magnetically ordered regime and persist to temperatures well above the ordering temperature, $\rm T_N$ = 74 K, consistent with low dimensional magnetic interactions. The inelastic neutron scattering results allow a model spin Hamiltonian to be presented that includes dominant intralayer interactions of $J_{1ab}$=0.45 meV, $J_{2ab}$=0.03 meV, $J_{3ab}$=0.19 meV, and appreciable interlayer interactions of $J_c$=0.031(5) meV. No evidence for anisotropy in the form of a spin-gap is observed in the data collected. The measurements on MnPSe$_3$ are contrasted with those on MnPS$_3$ and reveal a large increase in the interlayer exchange interactions in MnPSe$_3$, despite the quasi-2D magnetic behavior.

Realization of the orbital-selective Mott state at the molecular level in Ba$_3$LaRu$_2$O$_9$

Molecular magnets based on heavy transition metals have recently attracted significant interest in the quest for novel magnetic properties. For systems with an odd number of valence electrons per molecule, high or low molecular spin states are typically expected in the double exchange or quasi-molecular orbital limits respectively. In this work, we use bulk characterization, muon spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering to identify a rare intermediate spin-3/2 per dimer state in the 6H-perovskite Ba$_3$LaRu$_2$O$_9$ that cannot be understood in a double exchange or quasi-molecular orbital picture and instead arises from orbital-selective Mott insulating behavior at the molecular level. Our measurements are also indicative of collinear stripe magnetic order below $T_N$ = 26(1) K for these molecular spin-3/2 degrees-of-freedom, which is consistent with expectations for an ideal triangular lattice with significant next nearest neighbor in-plane exchange. Finally, we present neutron diffraction and Raman scattering data under applied pressure that reveal low-lying structural and spin state transitions at modest pressures P $\le$ 1 GPa, which highlights the delicate balance between competing energy scales in this system.

Topological magnon bands in a room temperature Kagome magnet

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic Kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn6Sn6, a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic Kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and ascribe this feature to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Our observation supports the existence of topological Dirac magnons in both the commensurate collinear and incommensurate coplanar magnetic orders, which is further corroborated by symmetry analysis. This finding places YMn6Sn6 as a promising candidate for room-temperature magnon spintronics applications.

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground state in Sr$_2$ScOsO$_6$

We report neutron scattering experiments which reveal a large spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum of weakly-monoclinic double perovskite Sr2ScOsO6. The spin gap is demonstrative of appreciable spin-orbit-induced anisotropy, despite nominally orbitally-quenched 5d3 Os5+ ions. The system is successfully modeled including nearest neighbor interactions in a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with exchange anisotropy. We find that the presence of the spin-orbit-induced anisotropy is essential for the realization of the type I antiferromagnetic ground state. This demonstrates that physics beyond the LS or JJ coupling limits plays an active role in determining the collective properties of 4d3 and 5d3 systems, and that theoretical treatments must include spin-orbit coupling.

CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$: Spin waves on a frustrated antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which consists of corrugated honeycomb layers of Mn. The dispersion of magnetic excitations has been measured along the H and L directions in reciprocal space, with a maximum excitation energy of $\approx$ 24 meV. These excitations are well described by spin waves in a Heisenberg model, including first and second neighbor exchange interactions, J$_{1}$ and J$_{2}$, in the Mn plane and also an exchange interaction between planes. The determined ratio J$_{2}$/J$_{1}$ $\approx$ 1/6 suggests that CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$ is the first example of a compound that lies very close to the mean field tricritical point, known for the classical Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, where the Néel phase and two different spiral phases coexist. The magnitude of the determined exchange interactions reveal a mean field ordering temperature $\approx$ 4 times larger than the reported Néel temperature T$_{N}$ = 85 K, suggesting significant frustration arising from proximity to the tricritical point.

Neutron Spectroscopic Study of Crystalline Electric Field Excitations in Stochiometric and Lightly Stuffed Yb2Ti2O7

Time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy has been used to determine the crystalline electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian, eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the $J$ = 7/2 Yb$^{3+}$ ion in the candidate quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnet $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$. The precise ground state (GS) of this exotic, geometrically-frustrated magnet is known to be sensitive to weak disorder associated with the growth of single crystals from the melt. Such materials display weak "stuffing" wherein a small proportion, $\approx$ 2\%, of the non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ sites are occupied by excess Yb$^{3+}$. We have carried out neutron spectroscopic measurements on a stoichiometric powder sample of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, as well as a crushed single crystal with weak stuffing and an approximate composition of Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ with $x$ = 0.046. All samples display three CEF transitions out of the GS, and the GS doublet itself is identified as primarily composed of m$_J$ = $\pm$1/2, as expected. However,"stuffing" at low temperatures in Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ induces a similar finite CEF lifetime as is induced in stoichiometric Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ by elevated temperature. We conclude that an extended strain field exists about each local "stuffed" site, which produces a distribution of random CEF environments in the lightly stuffed Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$, in addition to producing a small fraction of Yb-ions in defective environments with grossly different CEF eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Spin-Phonon Coupling and High Pressure Phase Transitions of RMnO3 (R= Ca and Pr): An Inelastic Neutron Scattering and First Principle Studies

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements over 7-1251 K in CaMnO3 covering various phase transitions, and over 6-150 K in PrMnO3 covering the magnetic transition. The excitations around 20 meV in CaMnO3 and at 17 meV in PrMnO3 are found to be associated with magnetic origin. In spite of similarity of the structure of the two compounds, the neutron inelastic spectrum of PrMnO3 exhibits broad features at 150 K unlike well-defined peaks in the spectrum of CaMnO3. This might result from the difference in nature of interactions in the two compounds (magnetic and Jahn-Teller distortion). The interpretation and analysis of the observed phonon spectra have been performed using ab-initio phonon calculations. We also discuss the effect of pressure on the structural distortions in the orthorhombic phase of CaMnO3 and PrMnO3. On application of pressure, we found that the variations of Mn-O distances are isotropic for CaMnO3 and highly anisotropic for PrMnO3. The calculated structure as a function of pressure in PrMnO3 shows that suppression of Jahn-Teller distortion and insulator to metal transition occurs simultaneously. Our calculations show that this transition may not be associated with the occurrence of the tetragonal phase above 20 GPa as reported in the literature, since the tetragonal phase is found to be dynamically unstable although it is found to be energetically favored over the orthorhombic phase above 20 GPa. CaMnO3 does not show any phase transition up to 60 GPa.

Antiferromagnetic Exchange, Hund's Coupling and the Origin of the Charge Gap in LaMnPO

We present inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements of the antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnPO that are well described by a Heisenberg spin model. These measurements are consistent with the presence of two-dimensional magnetic correlations up to a temperature T$_{max}$ $\approx$ 700 K >> T$_{N}$ = 375 K, the Néel temperature. Optical transmission measurements show the T = 300 K direct charge gap $Δ$ = 1 eV has decreased only marginally by 500 K and suggest it decreases by only 10% at T$_{max}$. Density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory calculations reproduce a direct charge gap in paramagnetic LaMnPO only when a strong Hund's coupling J$_{H}$ = 0.9 eV is included, as well as onsite Hubbard U = 8 eV. These results show the direct charge gap in LaMnPO is rather insensitive to antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and instead is a result of the local physics governed by U and J$_{H}$.

Neutron Scattering Evidence for a Periodically-Modulated Superconducting Phase in the Underdoped Cuprate La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$

The role of antiferromagnetic spin correlations in high-temperature superconductors remains a matter of debate. We present inelastic neutron scattering evidence that gapless spin fluctuations coexist with superconductivity in La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$. Furthermore, we observe that both the low-energy magnetic spectral weight and the spin incommensurability are enhanced by the onset of superconducting correlations. We propose that the coexistence occurs through intertwining of spatial modulations of the pair wave function and the antiferromagnetic correlations. This proposal is also directly relevant to sufficiently underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$.

Inelastic neutron scattering studies of YFeO$_3$

Spin waves in the the rare earth orthorferrite YFeO$_3$ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering and analyzed with a full four-sublattice model including contributions from both the weak ferromagnetic and hidden antiferromagnetic orders. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interactions of $J_1 = -4.23 \pm 0.08$ (nearest-neighbors only) or $J_1 = -4.77 \pm 0.08$ meV and $J_2 = -0.21 \pm 0.04$ meV lead to excellent fits for most branches at both low and high energies. An additional branch associated with the hidden antiferromagnetic order was observed. This work paves the way for studies of other materials in this class containing spin reorientation transitions and magnetic rare earth ions.

Spin pseudogap in Ni-doped SrCuO2

The S=1/2 spin chain material SrCuO2 doped with 1% S=1 Ni-impurities is studied by inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, the spectrum shows a pseudogap Δ~ 8 meV, absent in the parent compound, and not related to any structural phase transition. The pseudogap is shown to be a generic feature of quantum spin chains with dilute defects. A simple model based on this idea quantitatively accounts for the exprimental data measured in the temperature range 2-300 K, and allows to represent the momentum-integrated dynamic structure factor in a universal scaling form.

Spin-orbital locked magnetic excitations in a half-metallic double perovskite Ba2FeReO6

We present a powder inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$, a member of the double perovskite family of materials which exhibit half-metallic behavior and high Curie temperatures. We find clear evidence of two well-defined dispersing magnetic modes in its low temperature ferrimagnetic state. We develop a local moment model, which incorporates the interaction of Fe spins with spin-orbit locked magnetic moments on Re, and show that this captures our experimental observations. Our study further opens up double perovskites as model systems to explore the interplay of strong correlations and spin-orbit coupling in 5d transition metal oxides.

Evidence of a new quantum state of nano-confined water

Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering provides a means of directly and accurately measuring the momentum distribution of protons in water, which is determined primarily by the protons ground state wavefunction. We find that in water confined on scales of 20A, this wave function responds to the details of the confinement, corresponds to a strongly anharmonic local potential, shows evidence in some cases of coherent delocalization in double wells, and involves changes in zero point kinetic energy of the protons from -40 to +120 meV difference from that of bulk water at room temperature. This behavior appears to be a generic feature of nanoscale confinement. It is exhibited here in 16A inner diameter carbon nanotubes, two different hydrated proton exchange membranes(PEMs), Nafion 1120 and Dow 858, and has been seen earlier in xerogel and 14A diameter carbon nanotubes. The proton conductivity in the PEM samples correlates with the degree of coherent delocalization of the proton.

Kondo behavior, ferromagnetic correlations, and crystal fields in the heavy Fermion compounds Ce3X (X=In, Sn)

We report measurements of inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat for the heavy Fermion compounds Ce$_3$In and Ce$_3$Sn. The neutron scattering results show that the excited crystal field levels have energies $E_1$ = 13.2 meV, $E_2$ = 44.8 meV for Ce$_3$In and $E_1$ = 18.5 meV, $E_2$ = 36.1 meV for Ce$_3$Sn. The Kondo temperature deduced from the quasielastic linewidth is 17 K for Ce$_3$In and 40 K for Ce$_3$Sn. The low temperature behavior of the specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility can not be well-described by J=1/2 Kondo physics alone, but require calculations that include contributions from the Kondo effect, broadened crystal fields, and ferromagnetic correlations, all of which are known to be important in these compounds. We find that in Ce$_3$In the ferromagnetic fluctuation makes a 10-15 % contribution to the ground state doublet entropy and magnetization. The large specific heat coefficient $γ$ in this heavy fermion system thus arises more from the ferromagnetic correlations than from the Kondo behavior.

Neutron scattering and scaling behavior in URu2Zn20 and YbFe2Zn20

The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons.

Singlet-Triplet Excitations in the Unconventional Spin-Peierls System TiOBr

We have performed time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the unconventional spin-Peierls compound TiOBr using the fine-resolution Fermi chopper spectrometer (SEQUOIA) at the SNS. These measurements reveal two branches of magnetic excitations within the commensurate and incommensurate spin-Peierls phases, which we associate with n = 1 and n = 2 triplet excitations out of the singlet ground state. These measurements represent the first direct measure of the singlet-triplet energy gap in TiOBr, which is determined to be Eg = 21.2 +/- 1.0 meV.
