Static and Dynamical, Fractional Uncertainty Principles

We study the process of dispersion of low-regularity solutions to the Schrödinger equation using fractional weights (observables). We give another proof of the uncertainty principle for fractional weights and use it to get a lower bound for the concentration of mass. We consider also the evolution when the initial datum is the Dirac comb in $\mathbb{R}$. In this case we find fluctuations that concentrate at rational times and that resemble a realization of a Lévy process. Furthermore, the evolution exhibits multifractality.

Evolution of polygonal lines by the binormal flow

The aim of this paper is threefold. First we display solutions of the cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation on R in link with initial data a sum of Dirac masses. Secondly we show a Talbot effect for the same equation. Finally we prove the existence of a unique solution of the binormal flow with datum a polygonal line. This equation is used as a model for the vortex filaments dynamics in 3-D fluids and superfluids. We also construct solutions of the binormal flow that present an intermittency phenomena. Finally, the solution we construct for the binormal flow is continued for negative times, yielding a geometric way to approach the continuation after blow-up for the 1-D cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation.

On the energy of critical solutions of the binormal flow

The binormal flow is a model for the dynamics of a vortex filament in a 3-D inviscid incompressible fluid. The flow is also related with the classical continuous Heisenberg model in ferromagnetism, and the 1-D cubic Schrödinger equation. We consider a class of solutions at the critical level of regularity that generate singularities in finite time. One of our main results is to prove the existence of a natural energy associated to these solutions. This energy remains constant except at the time of the formation of the singularity when it has a jump discontinuity. When interpreting this conservation law in the framework of fluid mechanics, it involves the amplitude of the Fourier modes of the variation of the direction of the vorticity.

On the unique continuation of solutions to non-local non-linear dispersive equations

We prove unique continuation properties of solutions to a large class of nonlinear, non-local dispersive equations. The goal is to show that if $u_1,\,u_2$ are two suitable solutions of the equation defined in $\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$ such that for some non-empty open set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$, $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for $(x,t) \in Ω$, then $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for any $(x,t)\in\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$. The proof is based on static arguments. More precisely, the main ingredient in the proofs will be the unique continuation properties for fractional powers of the Laplacian established by Ghosh, Salo and Ulhmann in \cite{GhSaUh}, and some extensions obtained here.

Riemann's non-differentiable function and the binormal curvature flow

We make a connection between a famous analytical object introduced in the 1860s by Riemann, as well as some variants of it, and a nonlinear geometric PDE, the binormal curvature flow. As a consequence this analytical object has a non-obvious nonlinear geometric interpretation. We recall that the binormal flow is a standard model for the evolution of vortex filaments. We prove the existence of solutions of the binormal flow with smooth trajectories that are as close as desired to curves with a multifractal behavior. Finally, we show that this behavior falls within the multifractal formalism of Frisch and Parisi, which is conjectured to govern turbulent fluids.

On the improvement of the Hardy inequality due to singular magnetic fields

We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.

A strategy for self-adjointness of Dirac operators: Applications to the MIT bag model and delta-shell interactions

We develop an approach to prove self-adjointness of Dirac operators with boundary or transmission conditions at a $\mathcal{C}^2$-compact surface without boundary. To do so we are lead to study the layer potential induced by the Dirac system as well as to define traces in a weak sense for functions in the appropriate Sobolev space. Finally, we introduce Calderón projectors associated with the problem and illustrate the method in two special cases: the well-known MIT bag model and an electrostatic $δ$-shell interaction.

On the regularity of solutions to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation

This work is concerned with special regularity properties of solutions to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. In \cite{IsazaLinaresPonce} it was established that if the initial datun $u_0\in H^l((b,\infty))$ for some $l\in\mathbb Z^+$ and $b\in \mathbb R$, then the corresponding solution $u(\cdot,t)$ belongs to $H^l((β,\infty))$ for any $β\in \mathbb R$ and any $t\in (0,T)$. Our goal here is to extend this result to the case where $\,l\in \mathbb R^+$.

Optimal Staged Self-Assembly of General Shapes

We analyze the number of tile types $t$, bins $b$, and stages necessary to assemble $n \times n$ squares and scaled shapes in the staged tile assembly model. For $n \times n$ squares, we prove $\mathcal{O}(\frac{\log{n} - tb - t\log t}{b^2} + \frac{\log \log b}{\log t})$ stages suffice and $Ω(\frac{\log{n} - tb - t\log t}{b^2})$ are necessary for almost all $n$. For shapes $S$ with Kolmogorov complexity $K(S)$, we prove $\mathcal{O}(\frac{K(S) - tb - t\log t}{b^2} + \frac{\log \log b}{\log t})$ stages suffice and $Ω(\frac{K(S) - tb - t\log t}{b^2})$ are necessary to assemble a scaled version of $S$, for almost all $S$. We obtain similarly tight bounds when the more powerful flexible glues are permitted.

Power Side Channels in Security ICs: Hardware Countermeasures

Power side-channel attacks are a very effective cryptanalysis technique that can infer secret keys of security ICs by monitoring the power consumption. Since the emergence of practical attacks in the late 90s, they have been a major threat to many cryptographic-equipped devices including smart cards, encrypted FPGA designs, and mobile phones. Designers and manufacturers of cryptographic devices have in response developed various countermeasures for protection. Attacking methods have also evolved to counteract resistant implementations. This paper reviews foundational power analysis attack techniques and examines a variety of hardware design mitigations. The aim is to highlight exposed vulnerabilities in hardware-based countermeasures for future more secure implementations.

Spectral nuclear properties of NLS1 galaxies

It is not yet well known whether narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies follow the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation found for normal galaxies. Emission lines, such as [SII] or [OIII]$λ$5007, have been used as a surrogate of the stellar velocity dispersion and various results have been obtained. On the other hand, some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have shown Balmer emission with an additional intermediate component (IC) besides the well-known narrow and broad lines. In order to re-examine the location of NLS1 in the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation, we test some emission lines, such as the narrow component (NC) of H$α$ and the forbidden [NII]$λλ$6548,6584 and [SII]$λλ$6716,6731 lines, as replacements for $σ_{\star}$. On the other hand, we study the properties of the IC of H$α$ found in 14 galaxies of the sample to find a link between this component, the central engine, and the remaining lines. We also compare the emission among the broad component (BC) of H$α$ and those emitted at the narrow line region (NLR). We have obtained and studied medium-resolution spectra (170 km s$^{-1}$ FWHM at H$α$) of 36 NLS1 galaxies in the optical range $\sim$5800 - 6800Å. We found that, in general, most of the galaxies lie below the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation when the NC of H$α$, [SII], and [NII] lines are used as a surrogate of $σ_{\star}$. Besides this, we found that 13 galaxies show an IC, most of which are in the velocity range $\sim$ 700 $-$ 1500 km s$^{- 1}$. This is same range as in AGN types and is well correlated with the FWHM of BC and, therefore, with the BH mass. On the other hand, we found that there is a correlation between the luminosity of the BC of H$α$ and NC, IC, [NII]$λ$6584, and [SII] lines.

Universal Shape Replicators via Self-Assembly with Attractive and Repulsive Forces

We show how to design a universal shape replicator in a self-assembly system with both attractive and repulsive forces. More precisely, we show that there is a universal set of constant-size objects that, when added to any unknown hole-free polyomino shape, produces an unbounded number of copies of that shape (plus constant-size garbage objects). The constant-size objects can be easily constructed from a constant number of individual tile types using a constant number of preprocessing self-assembly steps. Our construction uses the well-studied 2-Handed Assembly Model (2HAM) of tile self-assembly, in the simple model where glues interact only with identical glues, allowing glue strengths that are either positive (attractive) or negative (repulsive), and constant temperature (required glue strength for parts to hold together). We also require that the given shape has specified glue types on its surface, and that the feature size (smallest distance between nonincident edges) is bounded below by a constant. Shape replication necessarily requires a self-assembly model where parts can both attach and detach, and this construction is the first to do so using the natural model of negative/repulsive glues (also studied before for other problems such as fuel-efficient computation); previous replication constructions require more powerful global operations such as an "enzyme" that destroys a subset of the tile types.

An isoperimetric-type inequality for electrostatic shell interactions for Dirac operators

In this article we investigate spectral properties of the coupling $H+V_λ$, where $H=-iα\cdot\nabla +mβ$ is the free Dirac operator in $\mathbb R^3$, $m>0$ and $V_λ$ is an electrostatic shell potential (which depends on a parameter $λ\in\mathbb R$) located on the boundary of a smooth domain in $\mathbb R^3$. Our main result is an isoperimetric-type inequality for the admissible range of $λ$'s for which the coupling $H+V_λ$ generates pure point spectrum in $(-m,m)$. That the ball is the unique optimizer of this inequality is also shown. Regarding some ingredients of the proof, we make use of the Birman-Schwinger principle adapted to our setting in order to prove some monotonicity property of the admissible $λ$'s, and we use this to relate the endpoints of the admissible range of $λ$'s to the sharp constant of a quadratic form inequality, from which the isoperimetric-type inequality is derived.

The vortex filament equation as a pseudorandom generator

In this paper, we consider the evolution of the so-called vortex filament equation (VFE), \begin{equation*} \mathbf X_t = \mathbf X_s\wedge\mathbf X_{ss}, \end{equation*} taking a planar regular polygon of $M$ sides as initial datum. We study VFE from a completely novel point of view: that of an evolution equation which yields a very good generator of pseudorandom numbers in a completely natural way. This essential randomness of VFE is in agreement with the randomness of the physical phenomena upon which it is based.

Vortex Filament Equation for a Regular Polygon

In this paper, we study the evolution of the vortex filament equation (VFE), $$\mathbf X_t = \mathbf X_s \wedge \mathbf X_{ss},$$ with $\mathbf X(s, 0)$ being a regular planar polygon. Using algebraic techniques, supported by full numerical simulations, we give strong evidence that $\mathbf X(s, t)$ is also a polygon at any rational time; moreover, it can be fully characterized, up to a rigid movement, by a generalized quadratic Gauß sum. We also study the fractal behavior of $\mathbf X(0, t)$, relating it with the so-called Riemann's non-differentiable function, that was proved by Jaffard to be a multifractal.

Shell interactions for Dirac operators: on the point spectrum and the confinement

Spectral properties and the confinement phenomenon for the coupling $H+V$ are studied, where $H=-iα\cdot\nabla +mβ$ is the free Dirac operator in $\mathcal{R}^3$ and $V$ is a measure-valued potential. The potentials $V$ under consideration are given in terms of surface measures on the boundary of bounded regular domains in $\mathcal{R}^3$. A criterion for the existence of point spectrum is given, with applications to electrostatic shell potentials. In the case of the sphere, an uncertainty principle is developed and its relation with some eigenvectors of the coupling is shown. Furthermore, a criterion for generating confinement is given. As an application, some known results about confinement on the sphere for electrostatic plus Lorentz scalar shell potentials are generalized to regular surfaces.

The initial value problem for the binormal flow with rough data

In this article we consider the initial value problem of the binormal flow with initial data given by curves that are regular except at one point where they have a corner. We prove that under suitable conditions on the initial data a unique regular solution exists for strictly positive and strictly negative times. Moreover, this solution satisfies a weak version of the equation for all times and can be seen as a perturbation of a suitably chosen self-similar solution. Conversely, we also prove that if at time t = 1 a small regular perturbation of a self-similar solution is taken as initial condition then there exists a unique solution that at time t = 0 is regular except at a point where it has a corner with the same angle as the one of the self-similar solution. This solution can be extended for negative times. The proof uses the full strength of the previous papers [9], [2], [3] and [4] on the study of small perturbations of self-similar solutions. A compactness argument is used to avoid the weighted conditions we needed in [4], as well as a more refined analysis of the asymptotic in time and in space of the tangent and normal vectors.

Relativistic Hardy inequalities in magnetic fields

We deal with Dirac operators with external homogeneous magnetic fields. Hardy-type inequalities related to these operators are investigated: for a suitable class of transversal magnetic fields, we prove a Hardy inequality with the same best constant as in the free case. This leaves naturally open an interesting question whether there exist magnetic fields for which a Hardy inequality with a better constant than the usual one, in connection with the well known diamagnetic phenomenon arising in non-relativistic models.

Shell interactions for Dirac operators

The self-adjointness of $H+V$ is studied, where $H=-iα\cdot\nabla +mβ$ is the free Dirac operator in $\R^3$ and $V$ is a measure-valued potential. The potentials $V$ under consideration are given by singular measures with respect to the Lebesgue measure, with special attention to surface measures of bounded regular domains. The existence of non-trivial eigenfunctions with zero eigenvalue naturally appears in our approach, which is based on well known estimates for the trace operator defined on classical Sobolev spaces and some algebraic identities of the Cauchy operator associated to $H$.

Stability of the selfsimilar dynamics of a vortex filament

In this paper we continue our investigation about selfsimilar solutions of the vortex filament equation, also known as the binormal flow (BF) or the localized induction equation (LIE). Our main result is the stability of the selfsimilar dynamics of small pertubations of a given selfsimilar solution. The proof relies on finding precise asymptotics in space and time for the tangent and the normal vectors of the perturbations. A main ingredient in the proof is the control of the evolution of weighted norms for a cubic 1-D Schrödinger equation, connected to the binormal flow by Hasimoto's transform.

Self-adjoint extensions of Dirac operators with Coulomb type singularity

In this work we construct self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator associated to Hermitian matrix potentials with Coulomb decay and prove that the domain is maximal. The result is obtained by means of a Hardy-Dirac type inequality. In particular, we can work with some electromagnetic potentials such that both, the electric potential and the magnetic one, have Coulomb type singularity.

Carleman estimates and necessary conditions for the existence of waveguides

We study via Carleman estimates the sharpest possible exponential decay for {\it waveguide} solutions to the Laplace equation $$(\partial^2_t+\triangle)u=Vu+W\cdot(\partial_t,\nabla)u,$$ and find a necessary quantitative condition on the exponential decay in the spatial-variable of nonzero waveguides solutions which depends on the size of $V$ and $W$ at infinity.

Discrete conservation laws and the convergence of long time simulations of the mKdV equation

Pseudospectral collocation methods and finite difference methods have been used for approximating an important family of soliton like solutions of the mKdV equation. These solutions present a structural instability which make difficult to approximate their evolution in long time intervals with enough accuracy. The standard numerical methods do not guarantee the convergence to the proper solution of the initial value problem and often fail by approaching solutions associated to different initial conditions. In this frame the numerical schemes that preserve the discrete invariants related to some conservation laws of this equation produce better results than the methods which only take care of a high consistency order. Pseudospectral spatial discretization appear as the most robust of the numerical methods, but finite difference schemes are useful in order to analyze the rule played by the conservation of the invariants in the convergence.

On the stability of self-similar solutions of 1D cubic Schrodinger equations

In this paper we will study the stability properties of self-similar solutions of 1-d cubic NLS equations with time-dependent coefficients of the form iu_t+u_{xx}+\frac{u}{2} (|u|^2-\frac{A}{t})=0, A\in \R (cubic). The study of the stability of these self-similar solutions is related, through the Hasimoto transformation, to the stability of some singular vortex dynamics in the setting of the Localized Induction Equation (LIE), an equation modeling the self-induced motion of vortex filaments in ideal fluids and superfluids. We follow the approach used by Banica and Vega that is based on the so-called pseudo-conformal transformation, which reduces the problem to the construction of modified wave operators for solutions of the equation iv_t+ v_{xx} +\frac{v}{2t}(|v|^2-A)=0. As a by-product of our results we prove that equation (cubic) is well-posed in appropriate function spaces when the initial datum is given by u(0,x)= z_0 \pv \frac{1}{x} for some values of z_0\in \C\setminus\{0\}, and A is adequately chosen. This is in deep contrast with the case when the initial datum is the Dirac-delta distribution.

The Gardner equation and the L^2-stability of the N-soliton solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation

Multi-soliton solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) are shown to be globally L2-stable, and asymptotically stable in the sense of Martel-Merle. The proof is surprisingly simple and combines the Gardner transform, which links the Gardner and KdV equations, together with the Martel-Merle-Tsai and Martel-Merle recent results on stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space, applied this time to the Gardner equation. As a by-product, the results of Maddocks-Sachs and Merle-Vega are improved in several directions.

Magnetic virial identities, weak dispersion and Strichartz inequalities

We show a family of virial-type identities for the Schrödinger and wave equations with electromagnetic potentials. As a consequence, some weak dispersive inequalities in space dimension $n\geq3$, involving Morawetz and smoothing estimates, are proved; finally, we apply them to prove Strichartz inequalities for the wave equation with a non-trapping electromagnetic potential with almost Coulomb decay.

On the Dirac delta as initial condition for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

In this article we will study the initial value problem for some Schrödinger equations with Diraclike initial data and therefore with infinite L2 mass, obtaining positive results for subcritical nonlinearities. In the critical case and in one dimension we prove that after some renormalization the corresponding solution has finite energy. This allows us to conclude a stability result in the defocusing setting. These problems are related to the existence of a singular dynamics for Schrödinger maps through the so called Hasimoto transformation.
