Eigenvalue bounds and spectral stability of Lamé operators with complex potentials

This paper is devoted to providing quantitative bounds on the location of eigenvalues, both discrete and embedded, of non self-adjoint Lamé operators of elasticity $-Δ^\ast + V$ in terms of suitable norms of the potential $V$. In particular, this allows to get sufficient conditions on the size of the potential such that the point spectrum of the perturbed operator remains empty. In three dimensions we show full spectral stability under suitable form-subordinated perturbations: we prove that the spectrum is purely continuous and coincides with the non negative semi-axis as in the free case.

Stability and instability of breathers in the $U(1)$ Sasa-Satusuma and Nonlinear Schrödinger models

We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss. In this paper we find the natural $H^2$ variational characterization for each of them, and prove that Sasa-Satsuma breathers are $H^2$ nonlinearly stable, improving the linear stability property previously proved by Pelinovsky and Yang. Moreover, in the SS case, we provide an alternative understanding of the SS solution as a breather, and not only as an embedded soliton. The method of proof is based in the use of a $H^2$ based Lyapunov functional, in the spirit of the first and third authors, extended this time to the vector-valued case. We also provide another rigorous justification of the instability of the remaining three nonlinear modes (Satsuma-Yajima, Peregrine y Kuznetsov-Ma), based in the study of their corresponding linear variational structure (as critical points of a suitable Lyapunov functional), and complementing the instability results recently proved e.g. in a paper by the third author.

Dispersive estimates for 2D-wave equations with critical potentials

We study the 2D-wave equation with a scaling-critical electromagnetic potential. This problem is doubly critical, because of the scaling invariance of the model and the singularities of the potentials, which are not locally integrable. In particular, the diamagnetic phenomenon allows to consider negative electric potential which can be singular in the same fashion as the inverse-square potential. We prove sharp time-decay estimates in the purely magnetic case, and Strichartz estimates for the complete model, involving a critical electromagnetic field.

Eigenvalue bounds for non-selfadjoint Dirac operators

In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\mathscr{D}_0)=\mathbb{R}$. The main tools we employ are an abstract version of the Birman-Schwinger principle, which include also the study of embedded eigenvalues, and suitable resolvent estimates for the Schrödinger operator.

Review on the stability of the Peregrine and related breathers

In this note, we review stability properties in energy spaces of three important nonlinear Schrödinger breathers: Peregrine, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Akhmediev. More precisely, we show that these breathers are unstable according to a standard definition of stability. Suitable Lyapunov functionals are described, as well as their underlying spectral properties. As an immediate consequence of the first variation of these functionals, we also present the corresponding nonlinear ODEs fulfilled by these NLS breathers. The notion of global stability for each breather above mentioned is finally discussed. Some open questions are also briefly mentioned.

Absence of eigenvalues of Dirac and Pauli Hamiltonians via the method of multipliers

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the magnetic field and the complex, matrix-valued electric potential, which guarantee that the corresponding system of Schrödinger operators has no point spectrum. In particular, this allows us to prove analogous results for Pauli operators under the same electromagnetic conditions and, in turn, as a consequence of the supersymmetric structure, also for magnetic Dirac operators.

On the improvement of the Hardy inequality due to singular magnetic fields

We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.

Spherical Schrödinger Hamiltonians: Spectral Analysis and Time Decay

In this survey, we review recent results concerning the canonical dispersive flow $e^{itH}$ led by a Schrödinger Hamiltonian $H$. We study, in particular, how the time decay of space $L^p$-norms depends on the frequency localization of the initial datum with respect to the some suitable spherical expansion. A quite complete description of the phenomenon is given in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the restriction of $H$ to the unit sphere, and a comparison with some uncertainty inequality is presented.

Relativistic Hardy inequalities in magnetic fields

We deal with Dirac operators with external homogeneous magnetic fields. Hardy-type inequalities related to these operators are investigated: for a suitable class of transversal magnetic fields, we prove a Hardy inequality with the same best constant as in the free case. This leaves naturally open an interesting question whether there exist magnetic fields for which a Hardy inequality with a better constant than the usual one, in connection with the well known diamagnetic phenomenon arising in non-relativistic models.

Sharp Hardy uncertainty principle and gaussian profiles of covariant Schrödinger evolutions

We prove a sharp version of the Hardy uncertainty principle for Schrödinger equations with external bounded electromagnetic potentials, based on logarithmic convexity properties of Schrödinger evolutions. We provide, in addition, an example of a real electromagnetic potential which produces the existence of solutions with critical gaussian decay, at two distinct times.

preprint2012arXiv

Hardy Uncertainty Principle and unique continuation properties of covariant Schrodinger flows

We prove a logarithmic convexity result for exponentially weighted $L^2$-norms of solutions to electromagnetic Schrödinger equation, without needing to assume smallness of the magnetic potential. As a consequence, we can prove a unique continuation result in the style of the Hardy uncertainty principle, which generalizes the analogous theorems which have been recently proved by Escauriaza, Kenig, Ponce and Vega.

A priori estimates for the Helmholtz equation with electromagnetic potentials in exterior domains

We study the Helmholtz equation with electromagnetic-type perturbations, in the exterior of a domain, in dimension $n\geq3$. We prove, by multiplier techniques in the sense of Morawetz, a family of a priori estimates from which the limiting absorption principle follows. Moreover, we give some standard applications to the absence of embedded eigenvalues and zero-resonances, under explicit conditions on the potentials.

Carleman estimates and necessary conditions for the existence of waveguides

We study via Carleman estimates the sharpest possible exponential decay for {\it waveguide} solutions to the Laplace equation $$(\partial^2_t+\triangle)u=Vu+W\cdot(\partial_t,\nabla)u,$$ and find a necessary quantitative condition on the exponential decay in the spatial-variable of nonzero waveguides solutions which depends on the size of $V$ and $W$ at infinity.

On the lack of dispersion for a class of magnetic Dirac flows

We show that global Strichartz estimates for magnetic Dirac operators generally fails, if the potentials do not decay fast enough at infinity. In order to prove this, we construct some explicit examples of homogeneous magnetic potentials with less than Coulomb decay, i. e. with homogeneity-degree more than -1, such that the magnetic field points to a fixed direction, which does not depend on $x\in \mathbb{R}^3$.

preprint2011arXiv

The lack of compactness in the Sobolev-Strichartz inequalities

We provide a general method to decompose any bounded sequence in $\dot H^s$ into linear dispersive profiles generated by an abstract propagator, with a rest which is small in the associated Strichartz norms. The argument is quite different from the one proposed by Bahouri-Gérard and Keraani in the cases of the wave and Schrödinger equations, and is adaptable to a large class of propagators, including those which are matrix-valued.

preprint2008arXiv

Magnetic virial identities, weak dispersion and Strichartz inequalities

We show a family of virial-type identities for the Schrödinger and wave equations with electromagnetic potentials. As a consequence, some weak dispersive inequalities in space dimension $n\geq3$, involving Morawetz and smoothing estimates, are proved; finally, we apply them to prove Strichartz inequalities for the wave equation with a non-trapping electromagnetic potential with almost Coulomb decay.

On the blow-up threshold for weakly coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations

We study the Cauchy problem for a system of two coupled nonlinear focusing Schroedinger equations arising in nonlinear optics. We discuss when the solutions are global in time or blow-up in finite time. Some results, in dependence of the data of the problem, are proved; in particular we give a bound, depending on the coupling parameter, for the blow-up threshold.
