Exterior energy bounds for the critical wave equation close to the ground state

By definition, the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution to a wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+N}$ is the sum of the limits as $t\to \pm\infty$ of the energy in the the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone. In our previous work (JEMS 2012, arXiv:1003.0625), we have proved that the exterior asymptotic energy of a solution of the linear wave equation in odd space dimension $N$ is bounded from below by the conserved energy of the solution. In this article, we study the analogous problem for the linear wave equation with a potential \begin{equation} \label{abstractLW} \tag{*} \partial_t^2u+L_Wu=0,\quad L_W:=-Δ-\frac{N+2}{N-2}W^{\frac{4}{N-2}} \end{equation} obtained by linearizing the energy critical wave equation at the ground-state solution $W$, still in odd space dimension. This equation admits nonzero solutions of the form $A+tB$, where $L_WA=L_WB=0$ with vanishing asymptotic exterior energy. We prove that the exterior energy of a solution of \eqref{abstractLW} is bounded from below by the energy of the projection of the initial data on the orthogonal complement of the space of initial data corresponding to these solutions. This will be used in a subsequent paper to prove soliton resolution for the energy-critical wave equation with radial data in all odd space dimensions. We also prove analogous results for the linearization of the energy-critical wave equation around a Lorentz transform of $W$, and give applications to the dynamics of the nonlinear equation close to the ground state in space dimensions $3$ and $5$.

On the unique continuation of solutions to non-local non-linear dispersive equations

We prove unique continuation properties of solutions to a large class of nonlinear, non-local dispersive equations. The goal is to show that if $u_1,\,u_2$ are two suitable solutions of the equation defined in $\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$ such that for some non-empty open set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$, $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for $(x,t) \in Ω$, then $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for any $(x,t)\in\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$. The proof is based on static arguments. More precisely, the main ingredient in the proofs will be the unique continuation properties for fractional powers of the Laplacian established by Ghosh, Salo and Ulhmann in \cite{GhSaUh}, and some extensions obtained here.

On the regularity of solutions to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation

This work is concerned with special regularity properties of solutions to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. In \cite{IsazaLinaresPonce} it was established that if the initial datun $u_0\in H^l((b,\infty))$ for some $l\in\mathbb Z^+$ and $b\in \mathbb R$, then the corresponding solution $u(\cdot,t)$ belongs to $H^l((β,\infty))$ for any $β\in \mathbb R$ and any $t\in (0,T)$. Our goal here is to extend this result to the case where $\,l\in \mathbb R^+$.

Profiles for bounded solutions of dispersive equations, with applications to energy-critical wave and Schrödinger equations

Consider a bounded solution of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation that does not scatter to a linear solution. We prove that this solution converges in some weak sense, along a sequence of times and up to scaling and space translation, to a sum of solitary waves. This result is a consequence of a new general compactness/rigidity argument based on profile decomposition. We also give an application of this method to the energy-critical Schrödinger equation.

Profiles for the radial focusing 4d energy-critical wave equation

Consider a finite energy radial solution to the focusing energy critical semilinear wave equation in 1+4 dimensions. Assume that this solution exhibits type-II behavior, by which we mean that the critical Sobolev norm of the evolution stays bounded on the maximal interval of existence. We prove that along a sequence of times tending to the maximal forward time of existence, the solution decomposes into a sum of dynamically rescaled solitons, a free radiation term, and an error tending to zero in the energy space. If, in addition, we assume that the critical norm of the evolution localized to the light cone (the forward light cone in the case of global solutions and the backwards cone in the case of finite time blow-up) is less than 2 times the critical norm of the ground state solution W, then the decomposition holds without a restriction to a subsequence.

Solutions of the focusing nonradial critical wave equation with the compactness property

Consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3, 4 or 5. In a previous paper, we proved that any solution which is bounded in the energy space converges, along a sequence of times and in some weak sense, to a solution with the compactness property, that is a solution whose trajectory stays in a compact subset of the energy space up to space translation and scaling. It is conjectured that the only solutions with the compactness property are stationary solutions and solitary waves that are Lorentz transforms of the former. In this note we prove this conjecture with an additional non-degeneracy assumption related to the invariances of the elliptic equation satisfied by stationary solutions. The proof uses a standard monotonicity formula, modulation theory, and a new channel of energy argument which is independent of the space dimension.

Homogenization of Green and Neumann Functions

For a family of second-order elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Green and Neumann functions, using Dirichlet and Neumann correctors. As a result we obtain asymptotic expansions of Poisson kernels and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps as well as near optimal convergence rates in $W^{1,p}$ for solutions with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions.

The Calderon problem with partial data on manifolds and applications

We consider Calderon's inverse problem with partial data in dimensions $n \geq 3$. If the inaccessible part of the boundary satisfies a (conformal) flatness condition in one direction, we show that this problem reduces to the invertibility of a broken geodesic ray transform. In Euclidean space, sets satisfying the flatness condition include parts of cylindrical sets, conical sets, and surfaces of revolution. We prove local uniqueness in the Calderon problem with partial data in admissible geometries, and global uniqueness under an additional concavity assumption. This work unifies two earlier approaches to this problem (\cite{KSU} and \cite{I}) and extends both. The proofs are based on improved Carleman estimates with boundary terms, complex geometrical optics solutions involving reflected Gaussian beam quasimodes, and invertibility of (broken) geodesic ray transforms. This last topic raises questions of independent interest in integral geometry.

Well-posedness for the fifth-order KdV equation in the energy space

We prove that the initial value problem (IVP) associated to the fifth order KdV equation {equation} \label{05KdV} \partial_tu-α\partial^5_x u=c_1\partial_xu\partial_x^2u+c_2\partial_x(u\partial_x^2u)+c_3\partial_x(u^3), {equation} where $x \in \mathbb R$, $t \in \mathbb R$, $u=u(x,t)$ is a real-valued function and $α, \ c_1, \ c_2, \ c_3$ are real constants with $α\neq 0$, is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R)$ for $s \ge 2$. In the Hamiltonian case (\textit i.e. when $c_1=c_2$), the IVP associated to \eqref{05KdV} is then globally well-posed in the energy space $H^2(\mathbb R)$.

Convergence Rates in L^2 for Elliptic Homogenization Problems

We study rates of convergence of solutions in L^2 and H^{1/2} for a family of elliptic systems {L_ε} with rapidly oscillating oscillating coefficients in Lipschitz domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence, we obtain convergence rates for Dirichlet, Neumann, and Steklov eigenvalues of {L_ε}. Most of our results, which rely on the recently established uniform estimates for the L^2 Dirichlet and Neumann problems in \cite{12,13}, are new even for smooth domains.

Determining an unbounded potential from Cauchy data in admissible geometries

In a previous article of Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig, Salo and Uhlmann, anisotropic inverse problems were considered in certain admissible geometries, that is, on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. In particular, it was proved that a bounded smooth potential in a Schrödinger equation was uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in dimensions n \geq 3. In this article we extend this result to the case of unbounded potentials, namely those in Ln/2. In the process, we derive Lp Carleman estimates with limiting Carleman weights similar to the Euclidean estimates of Jerison-Kenig and Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge.

On $L^p$ resolvent estimates for Laplace-Beltrami operators on compact manifolds

In this article we prove $L^p$ estimates for resolvents of Laplace-Beltrami operators on compact Riemannian manifolds, generalizing results of Kenig, Ruiz and Sogge in the Euclidean case and Shen for the torus. We follow Sogge and construct Hadamard's parametrix, then use classical boundedness results on integral operators with oscillatory kernels related to the Carleson and Sjölin condition. Our initial motivation was to obtain $L^p$ Carleman estimates with limiting Carleman weights generalizing those of Jerison and Kenig; we illustrate the pertinence of $L^p$ resolvent estimates by showing the relation with Carleman estimates. Such estimates are useful in the construction of complex geometrical optics solutions to the Schrödinger equation with unbounded potentials, an essential device for solving anisotropic inverse problems.

An alternative approach to regularity for the Navier-Stokes equations in critical spaces

In this paper we present an alternative viewpoint on recent studies of regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in critical spaces. In particular, we prove that mild solutions which remain bounded in the space $\dot H^{1/2}$ do not become singular in finite time, a result which was proved in a more general setting by L. Escauriaza, G. Seregin and V. Sverak using a different approach. We use the method of "concentration-compactness" + "rigidity theorem" which was recently developed by C. Kenig and F. Merle to treat critical dispersive equations. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first instance in which this method has been applied to a parabolic equation. We remark that we have restricted our attention to a special case due only to a technical restriction, and plan to return to the general case (the $L^3$ setting) in a future publication.

Homogenization of Elliptic Systems with Neumann Boundary Conditions

The main purpose of this work is to study uniform regularity estimates for a family of elliptic operators $\{\mathcal{L}_\varepsilon, \varepsilon>0\}$, arising in the theory of homogenization, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish sharp $W^{1,p}$ estimates, Lipschitz estimates, and nontangential maximal function estimates, which are uniform in the parameter $\varepsilon$, on solutions with Neumann boundary conditions in $C^{1,α}$ domains.

Local well-posedness and blow up in the energy space for a class of L2 critical dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations

We consider a family of dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations (dgBO) which are critical with respect to the L2 norm and interpolate between the critical modified (BO) equation and the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (gKdV). First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space for these equations, extending results by Kenig, Ponce and Vega concerning the (gKdV) equations. Second, we address the blow up problem in the spirit of works of Martel and Merle on the critical (gKdV) equation, by studying rigidity properties of the (dgBO) flow in a neighborhood of solitons. We prove that when the model is close to critical (gKdV), solutions of negative energy close to solitons blow up in finite or infinite time in the energy space. The blow up proof requires in particular extensions to (dgBO) of monotonicity results for localized versions of L2 norms by pseudo-differential operator tools.

Reconstructions from boundary measurements on admissible manifolds

We prove that a potential $q$ can be reconstructed from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Schrodinger operator $-Δ_g + q$ in a fixed admissible 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. We also show that an admissible metric $g$ in a fixed conformal class can be constructed from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for $Δ_g$. This is a constructive version of earlier uniqueness results by Dos Santos Ferreira et al. on admissible manifolds, and extends the reconstruction procedure of Nachman in Euclidean space. The main points are the derivation of a boundary integral equation characterizing the boundary values of complex geometrical optics solutions, and the development of associated layer potentials adapted to a cylindrical geometry.

Free boundary regularity for harmonic measures and Poisson kernels

One of the basic aims of this paper is to study the relationship between the geometry of ``hypersurface like'' subsets of Euclidean space and the properties of the measures they support. In this context we show that certain doubling properties of a measure determine the geometry of its support. A Radon measure is said to be doubling with constant C if C times the measure of the ball of radius r centered on the support is greater than the measure of the ball of radius 2r and the same center. We prove that if the doubling constant of a measure on \R^{n+1} is close to the doubling constant of the n-dimensional Lebesgue measure then its support is well approximated by n-dimensional affine spaces, provided that the support is relatively flat to start with. Primarily we consider sets which are boundaries of domains in \R^{n+1}. The n-dimensional Hausdorff measure may not be defined on the boundary of a domain in R^{n+1}. Thus we turn our attention to the harmonic measure which is well behaved under minor assumptions. We obtain a new characterization of locally flat domains in terms of the doubling properties of their harmonic measure. Along these lines we investigate how the ``weak'' regularity of the Poisson kernel of a domain determines the geometry of its boundary.
