On a conjecture of Andrews and Bachraoui

Recently, Andrews and Bachraoui considered a generating function $F_{k,m}(q)$ associated with certain two-color partitions, and conjectured that this function has non-negative coefficients for $m=1$. They showed this property for $1 \leq k \leq 4$. In this note, we prove that $F_{k,1}(q)$ has non-negative coefficients for $5 \leq k \leq 10$. Moreover, we show that, as $k\to\infty$, $F_{k,1}(q)$ is related to Ramanujan's third order mock theta function $ω(q)$ and to quotients of certain $q$-binomial coefficients.

A modular framework for functions of Knopp and indefinite binary quadratic forms

We study functions introduced by Knopp and complete them to non-holomorphic bimodular forms of positive integral weight related to indefinite binary quadratic forms. We investigate further properties of our completions, which in turn motivates certain local cusp forms. We then define modular analogues of negative weight of our local cusp forms, which are locally harmonic Maass forms with continuously removable singularities. We show that they admit local splittings in terms of Eichler integrals.

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths

Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Higher Depth False Modular Forms

False theta functions are functions that are closely related to classical theta functions and mock theta functions. In this paper, we study their modular properties at all ranks by forming modular completions analogous to modular completions of indefinite theta functions of any signature and thereby develop a structure parallel to the recently developed theory of higher depth mock modular forms. We then demonstrate this theoretical base on a number of examples up to depth three coming from characters of modules for the vertex algebra $W^0(p)_{A_n}$, $1 \leq n \leq 3$, and from $\hat{Z}$-invariants of $3$-manifolds associated with gauge group $\mathrm{SU}(3)$.

Infinite families of crank functions, Stanton-type conjectures, and unimodality

Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required. Here, we prove two of these conjectures. We also provide abstract criteria for quotients of polynomials by certain cyclotomic polynomials to have non-negative coefficients based on unimodality and symmetry. Furthermore, we extend Stanton's conjecture to an infinite family of cranks. This suggests further applications to other combinatorial objects. We also discuss numerical evidence for our conjectures, connections with other analytic conjectures such as the distribution of partition ranks.

Statistics for Unimodal Sequences

We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.

Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series as $q$-brackets of weighted $t$-hook functions on partitions

We consider the $t$-hook functions on partitions $f_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ defined by $$ f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}_t(λ)$ is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. The Bloch-Okounkov $q$-brackets $\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q$ include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even $a\geq 2$, we show that these $q$-brackets are natural pieces of weight $2-a$ sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd $a\leq -1,$ we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. We use these results to obtain new formulas of Chowla-Selberg type, and asymptotic expansions involving values of the Riemann zeta-function and Bernoulli numbers. We make use of work of Berndt, Han and Ji, and Zagier.

On $t$-core and self-conjugate $(2t-1)$-core partitions in arithmetic progressions

We extend recent results of Ono and Raji, relating the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions to Hurwitz class numbers. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial explanation for the curious equality $2\operatorname{sc}_7(8n+1) = \operatorname{c}_4(7n+2)$. We also conjecture that an equality of this shape holds if and only if $t=4$, proving the cases $t\in\{2,3,5\}$ and giving partial results for $t>5$.

Rigidity of elliptic genera: from number theory to geometry and back

In this paper we derive topological and number theoretical consequences of the rigidity of elliptic genera, which are special modular forms associated to each compact almost complex manifold. In particular, on the geometry side, we prove that rigidity implies relations between the Betti numbers and the index of a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ admitting a Hamiltonian action of a circle with isolated fixed points. We investigate the case of maximal index and toric actions. On the number theoretical side we prove that from each compact almost complex manifold of index greater than one, that can be endowed with the action of a circle with isolated fixed points, one can derive non-trivial relations among Eisenstein series. We give explicit formulas coming from the standard action on $\mathbb{C} P^n$.

Some $q$-series identities extending work of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on sums of divisors functions

In this article we extend a theorem of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on the asymptotic behavior of polynomials defined by a general class of recursive equations. Here the polynomials are in the variable $q$, and the recursive definition at step $n$ introduces a polynomial in $n$. Our extension replaces the polynomial in $n$ with either an exponential or periodic function of $n$.

Higher depth quantum modular forms and plumbed $3$-manifolds

In this paper we study new invariants $\widehat{Z}_{\boldsymbol{a}}(q)$ attached to plumbed $3$-manifolds that were introduced by Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa. These remarkable $q$-series at radial limits conjecturally compute WRT invariants of the corresponding plumbed $3$-manifold. Here we investigate the series $\widehat{Z}_{0}(q)$ for unimodular plumbing ${\tt H}$-graphs with six vertices. We prove that for every positive definite unimodular plumbing matrix, $\widehat{Z}_{0}(q)$ is a depth two quantum modular form on $\mathbb{Q}$.

A classification of harmonic Maass forms

We give a classification of the Harish-Chandra modules generated by the pullback to $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ of harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ with exponential growth allowed at the cusps. We assume that the weight is integral but include vector-valued forms. Due to the weak growth condition, these modules need not be irreducible. Elementary Lie algebra considerations imply that there are 9 possibilities, and we show, by giving explicit examples, that all of them arise from harmonic Maass forms. Finally, we briefly discuss the case of forms that are not harmonic but rather are annihilated by a power of the Laplacian, where much more complicated Harish-Chandra modules can arise.

A problem of Petersson about weight 0 meromorphic modular forms

In this paper, we provide an explicit construction of weight $0$ meromorphic modular forms. Following work of Petersson, we build these via Poincaré series. There are two main aspects of our investigation which differ from his approach. Firstly, the naive definition of the Poincaré series diverges and one must analytically continue via Hecke's trick. Hecke's trick is further complicated in our situation by the fact that the Fourier expansion does not converge everywhere due to singularities in the upper half-plane so it cannot solely be used to analytically continue the functions. To explain the second difference, we recall that Petersson constructed linear combinations from a family of meromorphic functions which are modular if a certain principal parts condition is satisfied. In contrast to this, we construct linear combinations from a family of non-meromorphic modular forms, known as polar harmonic Maass forms, which are meromorphic whenever the principal parts condition is satisfied.

Formulas for Jacobi forms and generalized Frobenius partitions

Since their introduction by Andrews, generalized Frobenius partitions have interested a number of authors, many of whom have worked out explicit formulas for their generating functions in specific cases. This has uncovered interesting combinatorial structure and led to proofs of a number of congruences. In this paper, we show how Andrews' generating functions can be cast in the framework of Eichler and Zagier's Jacobi forms. This reformulation allows us to compute explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions (and in fact provides formulas for further functions of potential combinatorial interest), and it leads to a recursion formula to calculate them in terms of infinite $q$-products.

Ramanujan and coefficients of meromorphic modular forms

The study of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms dates back to Ramanujan, who, together with Hardy, studied the reciprocal of the weight 6 Eisenstein series. Ramanujan conjectured a number of further identities for other meromorphic modular forms and quasi-modular forms which were subsequently established by Berndt, Bialek, and Yee. In this paper, we place these identities into the context of a larger family by making use of Poincaré series introduced by Petersson and a new family of Poincaré series which we construct here and which are of independent interest. In addition we establish a number of new explicit identities. In particular, we give the first examples of Fourier expansions for meromorphic modular form with third-order poles and quasi-meromorphic modular forms with second-order poles.

Ramanujan-like formulas for Fourier coefficients of all meromorphic cusp forms

In this paper, we investigate Fourier expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Over the years, a number of special cases of meromorphic modular forms were shown to have Fourier expansions closely resembling the expansion of the reciprocal of the weight $6$ Eisenstein series which was computed by Hardy and Ramanujan. By investigating meromorphic modular forms within a larger space of so-called polar harmonic Maass forms, we prove in this paper that all negative-weight meromorphic modular forms (and furthermore all quasi-meromorpic modular forms) have Fourier expansions of this type, granted that they are bounded towards $i\infty$.

Regularized inner products and errors of modularity

We develop a regularization for Petersson inner products of arbitrary weakly holomorphic modular forms, generalizing several known regularizations. As one application, we extend work of Duke, Imamoglu, and Toth on regularized inner products of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights $0$ and $3/2$. These regularized inner products can be evaluated in terms of the coefficients of holomorphic parts of harmonic Maass forms of dual weights. Moreover, we study the errors of modularity of the holomorphic parts of such a harmonic Maass forms and show that they induce cocyles in the first parabolic cohomology group introduced by Bruggeman, Choie, and the second author. This provides explicit representatives of the cohomology classes constructed abstractly and in a very general setting in their work.

$p$-adic properties of modular shifted convolution Dirichlet series

Hoffstein and Hulse recently introduced the notion of shifted convolution Dirichlet series for pairs of modular forms $f_1$ and $f_2$. The second two authors investigated certain special values of symmetrized sums of such functions, numbers which are generally expected to be mysterious transcendental numbers. They proved that the generating functions of these values in $h$-aspect are linear combinations of mixed mock modular forms and quasimodular forms. Here we examine the special cases when $f_1=f_2$ where, in addition, there is a prime $p$ for which $p^2$ divides the level. We prove that the mixed mock modular form is a linear combination of at most two weight 2 weakly holomorphic $p$-adic modular forms.

Distinct parts partitions without sequences

Partitions without sequences of consecutive integers as parts have been studied recently by many authors, including Andrews, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik, among others. Their results include a description of combinatorial properties, hypergeometric representations for the generating functions, and asymptotic formulas for the enumeration functions. We complete a similar investigation of partitions into distinct parts without sequences, which are of particular interest due to their relationship with the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Our main results include a double series representation for the generating function, an asymptotic formula for the enumeration function, and several combinatorial inequalities.

False theta functions and companions to Capparelli's identities

Capparelli conjectured two modular identities for partitions whose parts satisfy certain gap conditions, where were motivated by the calculation of characters for the standard modules of certain affine Lie algebras and by vertex operator theory. These identities were subsequently proved and refined by Andrews, who related them to Jacobi theta functions, and also by Alladi-Andrews-Gordon, Capparelli, and Tamba-Xie. In this paper we prove two new companions to Capparelli's identities, where the evaluations are expressed in terms of Jacobi theta functions and false theta functions.

Half-integral weight Eichler integrals and quantum modular forms

In analogy with the classical theory of Eichler integrals for integral weight modular forms, Lawrence and Zagier considered examples of Eichler integrals of certain half-integral weight modular forms. These served as early prototypes of a new type of object, which Zagier later called a quantum modular form. Since then, a number of others have studied similar examples. Here we develop the theory in a general context, giving rise to a well-defined class of quantum modular forms. Since elements of this class show up frequently in examples of combinatorial and number theoretical interest, we propose the study of the general properties of this space of quantum modular forms. We conclude by giving a set of fundamental questions concerning this space of objects which merit further study.

Identities for generalized Appell functions and the blow-up formula

In this paper, we prove identities for a class of generalized Appell functions which are based on the $\operatorname{A}_2$ root lattice. The identities are reminiscent of periodicity relations for the classical Appell function, and are proven using only analytic properties of the functions. Moreover they are a consequence of the blow-up formula for generating functions of invariants of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves of rank 3 on rational surfaces. Our proof confirms that in the latter context, different routes to compute the generating function (using the blow-up formula and wall-crossing) do arrive at identical $q$-series. The proof also gives a clear procedure for how to prove analogous identities for generalized Appell functions appearing in generating functions for sheaves with rank $r>3$.

Maass-Jacobi Poincaré series and Mathieu Moonshine

Mathieu moonshine attaches a weak Jacobi form of weight zero and index one to each conjugacy class of the largest sporadic simple group of Mathieu. We introduce a modification of this assignment, whereby weak Jacobi forms are replaced by semi-holomorphic Maass-Jacobi forms of weight one and index two. We prove the convergence of some Maass-Jacobi Poincaré series of weight one, and then use these to characterize the semi-holomorphic Maass-Jacobi forms arising from the largest Mathieu group.

Negative index Jacobi forms and quantum modular forms

In this paper, we consider the Fourier coefficients of a special class of meromorphic Jaocbi forms of negative index. Much recent work has been done on such coefficients in the case of Jacobi forms of positive index, but almost nothing is known for Jacobi forms of negative index. In this paper we show, from two different perspectives, that their Fourier coefficients have a simple decomposition in terms of partial theta functions. The first perspective uses the language of Lie super algebras, and the second applies the theory of elliptic functions. In particular, we find a new infinite family of rank-crank type PDEs generalizing the famous example of Atkin and Garvan. We then describe the modularity properties of these coefficients, showing that they are "mixed partial theta functions", along the way determining a new class of quantum modular partial theta functions which is of independent interest.

On the Fourier coefficients of negative index meromorphic Jacobi forms

In this paper, we consider the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms of negative index. This extends recent work of Creutzig and the first two authors for the special case of Kac-Wakimoto characters which occur naturally in Lie theory, and yields, as easy corollaries, many important PDEs arising in combinatorics such as the famous rank-crank PDE of Atkin and Garvan. Moreover, we discuss the relation of our results to partial theta functions and quantum modular forms as introducted by Zagier, which together with previous work on positive index meromorphic Jacobi forms illuminates the general structure of the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms.

On the modularity of certain functions from the Gromov-Witten theory of elliptic orbifolds

In this paper, we study modularity of several functions which naturally arose in a recent paper of Lau and Zhou on open Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic orbifolds. They derived a number of examples of indefinite theta functions, and we provide modular completions for several such functions which involve more complicated objects than ordinary modular forms. In particular, we give new closed formulas for special indefinite theta functions of type $(1,2)$ in terms of products of mock modular forms. This formula is also of independent interest.

Radial limits of mock theta functions

Inspired by the original definition of mock theta functions by Ramanujan, a number of authors have considered the question of explicitly determining their behavior at the cusps. Moreover, these examples have been connected to important objects such as quantum modular forms and ranks and cranks by Folsom, Ono, and Rhoades. Here we solve the general problem of understanding Ramanujan's definition explicitly for any weight $\frac12$ mock theta function, answering a question of Rhoades. Moreover, as a side product, our results give a large, explicit family of modular forms.

Asymptotic formulas for coefficients of inverse theta functions

We determine asymptotic formulas for the coefficients of a natural class of negative index and negative weight Jacobi forms. These coefficients can be viewed as a refinement of the numbers $p_k(n)$ of partitions of n into k colors. Part of the motivation for this work is that they are equal to the Betti numbers of the Hilbert scheme of points on an algebraic surface S and appear also as counts of Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) states in physics.

Double series representations for Schur's partition function and related identities

We prove new double summation hypergeometric $q$-series representations for several families of partitions, including those that appear in the famous product identities of Göllnitz, Gordon, and Schur. We give several different proofs for our results, using bijective partitions mappings and modular diagrams, the theory of $q$-difference equations and recurrences, and the theories of summation and transformation for $q$-series. We also consider a general family of similar double series and highlight a number of other interesting special cases.

Harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms with singularities and a theta-like decomposition

Real-analytic Jacobi forms play key roles in different areas of mathematics and physics, but a satisfactory theory of such Jacobi forms has been lacking. In this paper, we fill this gap by introducing a space of harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms with singularities which includes the real-analytic Jacobi forms from Zwegers's PhD thesis. We provide several structure results for the space of such Jacobi forms, and we employ Zwegers's $\widehatμ$-functions to establish a theta-like decomposition.

Locally harmonic Maass forms and the kernel of the Shintani lift

In this paper we define a new type of modular object and construct explicit examples of such functions. Our functions are closely related to cusp forms constructed by Zagier which played an important role in the construction by Kohnen and Zagier of a kernel function for the Shimura and Shintani lifts between half-integral and integral weight cusp forms. Although our functions share many properties in common with harmonic weak Maass forms, they also have some properties which strikingly contrast those exhibited by harmonic weak Maass forms. As a first application of the new theory developed in this paper, one obtains a new perspective on the fact that the even periods of Zagier's cusp forms are rational as an easy corollary.

Modular local polynomials

In this paper, we consider modular local polynomials. These functions satisfy modularity while they are locally defined as polynomials outside of an exceptional set. We prove an inequality for the dimension of the space of such forms when the exceptional set is given by certain natural geodesics related to binary quadratic forms of (positive) discriminant $D$. We furthermore show that the dimension is the largest possible if and only if $D$ is an even square. Following this, we describe how to use the methods developped in this paper to establish an algorithm which explicitly determines the space of modular local polynomials for each $D$.

On the Fourier expansion of Bloch-Okounkov

In this paper, we study algebraic and analytic properties of Fourier coefficients, expressed as $q$-series, of the so-called Bloch-Okounkov $n$-point function. We prove several results about these series and explain how they relate to Rogers' false theta function. Then we obtain their full asymptotics, as $τ\rightarrow 0$, and use this result to derive asymptotic properties of the coefficients in the $q$-expansion. At the end, we also introduce and discuss higher rank generalization of Bloch-Okounkov's functions.

Shintani lifts and fractional derivatives for harmonic weak Maass forms

In this paper, we construct Shintani lifts from integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms to half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. Although defined by different methods, these coincide with the classical Shintani lifts when restricted to the space of cusp forms. As a side effect, this gives the coefficients of the classical Shintani lifts as new cycle integrals. This yields new formulas for the $L$-values of Hecke eigenforms. When restricted to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms orthogonal to cusp forms, the Shintani lifts introduce a definition of weakly holomorphic Hecke eigenforms. Along the way, auxiliary lifts are constructed from the space of harmonic weak Maass forms which yield a "fractional derivative" from the space of half-integral weight harmonic weak Maass forms to half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. This fractional derivative complements the usual $ξ$-operator introduced by Bruinier and Funke.

A partition identity and the universal mock theta function $g_2$

We prove analytic and combinatorial identities reminiscent of Schur's classical partition theorem. Specifically, we show that certain families of overpartitions whose parts satisfy gap conditions are equinumerous with partitions whose parts satisfy congruence conditions. Furthermore, if small parts are excluded, the resulting overpartitions are generated by the product of a modular form and Gordon and McIntosh's universal mock theta function. Finally, we give an interpretation for the universal mock theta function at real arguments in terms of certain conditional probabilities.

Almost harmonic Maass forms and Kac-Wakimoto characters

We resolve a question of Kac, and explain the automorphic properties of characters due to Kac-Wakimoto pertaining to sl(m|n)^ highest weight modules, for n \geq 1. We prove that the Kac-Wakimoto characters are essentially holomorphic parts of certain generalizations of harmonic weak Maass forms which we call "almost harmonic Maass forms". Using a new approach, this generalizes prior work of the first author and Ono, and the authors, both of which treat only the case n = 1. We also provide an explicit asymptotic expansion for the characters.

Asymptotic formulas for stacks and unimodal sequences

We study enumeration functions for unimodal sequences of positive integers, where the size of a sequence is the sum of its terms. We survey known results for a number of natural variants of unimodal sequences, including Auluck's generalized Ferrer diagrams, Wright's stacks, and Andrews' convex compositions. These results describe combinatorial properties, generating functions, and asymptotic formulas for the enumeration functions. We also prove several new asymptotic results that fill in the notable missing cases from the literature, including an open problem in statistical mechanics due to Temperley. Furthermore, we explain the combinatorial and asymptotic relationship between partitions, Andrews' Frobenius symbols, and stacks with summits.

Schur's partition theorem and mixed mock modular forms

We study families of partitions with gap conditions that were introduced by Schur and Andrews, and describe their fundamental connections to combinatorial q-series and automorphic forms. In particular, we show that the generating functions for these families naturally lead to deep identities for theta functions and Hickerson's universal mock theta function, which provides a very general answer to Andrews' Conjecture on the modularity of the Schur-type generating function. Furthermore, we also complete the second part of Andrews' speculation by determining the asymptotic behavior of these functions. In particular, we use Wright's Circle Method in order to prove families of asymptotic inequalities in the spirit of the Alder-Andrews Conjecture. As a final application, we prove the striking result that the universal mock theta function can be expressed as a conditional probability in a certain natural probability space with an infinite sequence of independent events.

Asymptotic inequalities for positive crank and rank moments

Andrews, Chan, and Kim recently introduced a modified definition of crank and rank moments for integer partitions that allows the study of both even and odd moments. In this paper, we prove the asymptotic behavior of these moments in all cases, and our main result states that while the two families of moment functions are asymptotically equal, the crank moments are always asymptotically larger than the rank moments. Andrews, Chan, and Kim primarily focused on one case, and proved the stronger result that the first crank moment is strictly larger than the first rank moment for all partitions by showing that the difference is equal to a combinatorial statistic on partitions that they named the ospt-function. Our main results therefore also give the asymptotic behavior of the ospt-function, and we further determine its behavior modulo 2 by relating its parity to Andrews spt-function.

k-Run Overpartitions and Mock Theta Functions

In this paper we introduce k-run overpartitions as natural analogs to partitions without k-sequences, which were first defined and studied by Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik. Following their work as well as that of Andrews, we prove a number of results for k-run overpartitions, beginning with a double summation q-hypergeometric series representation for the generating functions. In the special case of 1-run overpartitions we further relate the generating function to one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Finally, we describe the relationship between k-run overpartitions and certain sequences of random events, and use probabilistic estimates in order to determine the asymptotic growth behavior of the number of k-run overpartitions of size n.

On the positivity of black hole degeneracies in string theory

Certain helicity trace indices of charged states in N=4 and N=8 superstring theory have been computed exactly using their explicit weakly coupled microscopic description. These indices are expected to count the exact quantum degeneracies of black holes carrying the same charges. In order for this interpretation to be consistent, these indices should be positive integers. We prove this positivity property for a class of four/five dimensional black holes in type II string theory compactified on T^6/T^5 and on K3 \times T^2/S^1. The proof relies on the mock modular properties of the corresponding generating functions.

Theta lifts and local Maass forms

The first two authors and Kohnen have recently introduced a new class of modular objects called locally harmonic Maass forms, which are annihilated almost everywhere by the hyperbolic Laplacian operator. In this paper, we realize these locally harmonic Maass forms as theta lifts of harmonic weak Maass forms. Using the theory of theta lifts, we then construct examples of (non-harmonic) local Maass forms, which are instead eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian almost everywhere.

From sheaves on P2 to a generalization of the Rademacher expansion

Moduli spaces of stable coherent sheaves on a surface are of much interest for both mathematics and physics. Yoshioka computed generating functions of Poincare polynomials of such moduli spaces if the surface is the projective plane P2 and the rank of the sheaves is 2. Motivated by physical arguments, this paper investigates the modular properties of these generating functions. It is shown that these functions can be written in terms of the Lerch sum and theta function. Based on this, we prove a conjecture by Vafa and Witten, which expresses the generating functions of Euler numbers as a mixed mock modular form. Moreover, we derive an exact formula for the Fourier coefficients of this function, which is similar to the Rademacher expansion for weakly holomorphic modular forms but is more complicated. This is the first example of an exact formula for the Fourier coefficients of mixed mock modular forms, which is of independent mathematical interest.

Inequalities for full rank differences of 2-marked Durfee symbols

In this paper, we obtain infinitely many non-trivial identities and inequalities between full rank differences for 2-marked Durfee symbols, a generalization of partitions introduced by Andrews. A certain strict inequality, which almost always holds, shows that identities for Dyson's rank, similar to those proven by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer, are quite rare. By showing an analogous strict inequality, we show that such non-trivial identities are also rare for the full rank, but on the other hand we obtain an infinite family of non-trivial identities, contrasting the partition theoretic case.

Mock period functions, sesquiharmonic Maass forms, and non-critical values of L-functions

We introduce a new technique of completion for 1-cohomology which parallels the corresponding technique in the theory of mock modular forms. This technique is applied in the context of non-critical values of L-functions of GL(2,Q) cusp forms. We prove that a generating series of non-critical values can be interpreted as a mock period function we define in analogy with period polynomials. Further, we prove that non-critical values can be encoded into a sesquiharmonic Maass form. Finally, we formulate and prove an Eichler-Shimura-type isomorphism for the space of mock period functions.

Partial theta functions and mock modular forms as q-hypergeometric series

Ramanujan studied the analytic properties of many $q$-hypergeometric series. Of those, mock theta functions have been particularly intriguing, and by work of Zwegers, we now know how these curious $q$-series fit into the theory of automorphic forms. The analytic theory of partial theta functions however, which have $q$-expansions resembling modular theta functions, is not well understood. Here we consider families of $q$-hypergeometric series which converge in two disjoint domains. In one domain, we show that these series are often equal to one another, and define mock theta functions, including the classical mock theta functions of Ramanujan, as well as certain combinatorial generating functions, as special cases. In the other domain, we prove that these series are typically not equal to one another, but instead are related by partial theta functions.

Automorphic properties of generating functions for generalized odd rank moments and odd Durfee symbols

We define two-parameter generalizations of Andrews' $(k+1)$-marked odd Durfee symbols and $2k$th symmetrized odd rank moments, and study the automorphic properties of some of their generating functions. When $k=0$ we obtain families of modular forms and mock modular forms. When $k \geq 1$, we find quasimodular forms and quasimock modular forms.

Improved bounds on metastability thresholds and probabilities for generalized bootstrap percolation

We generalize and improve results of Andrews, Gravner, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik on metastability thresholds for generalized two-dimensional bootstrap percolation models, and answer several of their open problems and conjectures. Specifically, we prove slow convergence and localization bounds for Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik's k-percolation models, and in the process provide a unified and improved treatment of existing results for bootstrap, modified bootstrap, and Frobose percolation. Furthermore, we prove improved asymptotic bounds for the generating functions of partitions without k-gaps, which are also related to certain infinite probability processes relevant to these percolation models. One of our key technical probability results is also of independent interest. We prove new upper and lower bounds for the probability that a sequence of independent events with monotonically increasing probabilities contains no "k-gap" patterns, which interpolates the general Markov chain solution that arises in the case that all of the probabilities are equal.

Automorphic properties of generating functions for generalized rank moments and Durfee symbols

We define two-parameter generalizations of two combinatorial constructions of Andrews: the kth symmetrized rank moment and the k-marked Durfee symbol. We prove that three specializations of the associated generating functions are so-called quasimock theta functions, while a fourth specialization gives quasimodular forms. We then define a two-parameter generalization of Andrews' smallest parts function and note that this leads to quasimock theta functions as well. The automorphic properties are deduced using q-series identities relating the relevant generating functions to known mock theta functions.

Rank and crank moments for overpartitions

We study two types of crank moments and two types of rank moments for overpartitions. We show that the crank moments and their derivatives, along with certain linear combinations of the rank moments and their derivatives, can be written in terms of quasimodular forms. We then use this fact to prove exact relations involving the moments as well as congruence properties modulo 3, 5, and 7 for some combinatorial functions which may be expressed in terms of the second moments. Finally, we establish a congruence modulo 3 involving one such combinatorial function and the Hurwitz class number H(n).
