Effect of the average scalar curvature on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate the effect of the average scalar curvature on the conjugate radius, average area of the geodesic spheres, average volume of the metric balls and the total volume of a closed Riemannian manifold $N$ (or more generally $N$ with finite volume whose negative Ricci curvature integral on $SN$ is finite). For example, we prove that if the average scalar curvature is larger than the lower bound of the normalized Ricci curvature, then we can improve the Bishop-Gromov estimate on the average volume of the metric balls of any size. We also prove the monotone decreasing property of a certain geometric integral when the average scalar curvature has a lower bound. This leads to a comparison theorem of the average total mean curvature of geodesic spheres of radius up to $\mathrm{inj}(N)$.

Length-minimizing level curves via calibrations

We present an elementary criterion to show the length-minimizing property of geodesics for a large class of conformal metrics. In particular, we prove the length-minimizing property of level curves of harmonic functions and the length-minimizing property of a family of the conic sections with the eccentricity $\varepsilon$ in the upper half plane endowed with the conformal metric $ \left( {\varepsilon}^{2} + \frac{1}{\;{y^2} \;} \right) \left(dx^{2} + dy^{2} \right)$.

Universal Approximation on the Hypersphere

It is well known that any continuous probability density function on $\mathbb{R}^m$ can be approximated arbitrarily well by a finite mixture of normal distributions, provided that the number of mixture components is sufficiently large. The von-Mises-Fisher distribution, defined on the unit hypersphere $S^m$ in $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$, has properties that are analogous to those of the multivariate normal on $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$. We prove that any continuous probability density function on $S^m$ can be approximated to arbitrary degrees of accuracy by a finite mixture of von-Mises-Fisher distributions.

Weighted Hsiung-Minkowski formulas and rigidity of umbilical hypersurfaces

We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.

On the positivity of a quasi-local mass in general dimensions

In this paper, we obtain a positivity result of a quasi-local mass integral as proposed by Shi and Tam in general dimensions. The main argument is based on the monotonicity of a mass integral in a foliation of quasi-spherical metrics and a positive mass type theorem which was proved by Wang and Yau in the three dimensional case, and is shown here in higher dimensions using spinor methods.
