Hyperbolic mass via horospheres

We derive geometric formulas for the mass of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds using coordinate horospheres. As an application, we obtain a new rigidity result of hyperbolic space: if a complete asymptotically hyperbolic manifold has scalar curvature lower bound -n(n-1) and is isometric to hyperbolic space outside a coordinate horosphere, then the manifold is isometric to hyperbolic space. In addition, we apply our formula to investigate regions near infinity that do not contribute to the mass quantity, which leads to improved rigidity results of hyperbolic space.

A Positive Mass Theorem for Manifolds with Boundary

We derive a positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with boundary whose mean curvature satisfies a sharp estimate involving the conformal Green's function. The theorem also holds if the conformal Green's function is replaced by the standard Green's function for the Laplacian operator. As an application, we obtain an inequality relating the mass and harmonic functions that generalizes H. Bray's mass-capacity inequality in his proof of the Riemannian Penrose conjecture.

Measuring Mass via Coordinate Cubes

Inspired by a formula of Stern that relates scalar curvature to harmonic functions, we evaluate the mass of an asymptotically flat $3$-manifold along faces and edges of a large coordinate cube. In terms of the mean curvature and dihedral angle, the resulting mass formula relates to Gromov's scalar curvature comparison theory for cubic Riemannian polyhedra. In terms of the geodesic curvature and turning angle of slicing curves, the formula realizes the mass as integration of the angle defect detected by the boundary term in the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.

Higher dimensional black hole initial data with prescribed boundary metric

We obtain higher dimensional analogues of the results of Mantoulidis and Schoen in [8]. More precisely, we show that (i) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $3$-sphere $S^3$ can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be arranged to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value specified by the Riemannian Penrose inequality; (ii) any metric $g$ with positive scalar curvature on the $n$-sphere $S^n$, with $ n \ge 4 $, such that $(S^n, g)$ isometrically embeds into $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ as a star-shaped hypersurface, can be realized as the induced metric on the outermost apparent horizon of an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature, whose ADM mass can be made to be arbitrarily close to the optimal value.

Total mean curvature, scalar curvature, and a variational analog of Brown-York mass

We study the supremum of the total mean curvature on the boundary of compact, mean-convex 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, and a prescribed boundary metric. We establish an additivity property for this supremum and exhibit rigidity for maximizers assuming the supremum is attained. When the boundary consists of 2-spheres, we demonstrate that the finiteness of the supremum follows from the previous work of Shi-Tam and Wang-Yau on the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity. In turn, we define a variational analog of Brown-York quasi-local mass without assuming that the boundary 2-sphere has positive Gauss curvature.

Variational and rigidity properties of static potentials

In this paper we study some global properties of static potentials on asymptotically flat $3$-manifolds $(M,g)$ in the nonvacuum setting. Heuristically, a static potential $f$ represents the (signed) length along $M$ of an irrotational timelike Killing vector field, which can degenerate on surfaces corresponding to the zero set of $f$. Assuming a suitable version of the null energy condition, we prove that a noncompact component of the zero set must be area minimizing. From this we obtain some rigidity results for static potentials that have noncompact zero set components, or equivalently, that are unbounded. Roughly speaking, these results show, at the pure initial data level, that `boost-type' Killing vector fields can exist only under special circumstances.

Boundary Effect of Ricci Curvature

On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, we study how Ricci curvature of the interior affects the geometry of the boundary. First we establish integral inequalities for functions defined solely on the boundary and apply them to obtain geometric inequalities involving the total mean curvature. Then we discuss related rigidity questions and prove Ricci curvature rigidity results for manifolds with boundary.

Static potentials on asymptotically flat manifolds

We consider the question whether a static potential on an asymptotically flat 3-manifold can have nonempty zero set which extends to the infinity. We prove that this does not occur if the metric is asymptotically Schwarzschild with nonzero mass. If the asymptotic assumption is relaxed to the usual assumption under which the total mass is defined, we prove that the static potential is unique up to scaling unless the manifold is flat. We also provide some discussion concerning the rigidity of complete asymptotically flat 3-manifolds without boundary that admit a static potential.

Deformation of Scalar Curvature and Volume

The stationary points of the total scalar curvature functional on the space of unit volume metrics on a given closed manifold are known to be precisely the Einstein metrics. One may consider the modified problem of finding stationary points for the volume functional on the space of metrics whose scalar curvature is equal to a given constant. In this paper, we localize a condition satisfied by such stationary points to smooth bounded domains. The condition involves a generalization of the static equations, and we interpret solutions (and their boundary values) of this equation variationally. On domains carrying a metric that does not satisfy the condition, we establish a local deformation theorem that allows one to achieve simultaneously small prescribed changes of the scalar curvature and of the volume by a compactly supported variation of the metric. We apply this result to obtain a localized gluing theorem for constant scalar curvature metrics in which the total volume is preserved. Finally, we note that starting from a counterexample of Min-Oo's conjecture such as that of Brendle-Marques-Neves, counterexamples of arbitrarily large volume and different topological types can be constructed.

Extensions and fill-ins with nonnegative scalar curvature

Motivated by the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity, we apply the asymptotically flat extensions, constructed by Shi and Tam in the proof of the positivity of the Brown--York mass, to study a fill-in problem of realizing geometric data on a 2-sphere as the boundary of a compact 3-manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature. We characterize the relationship between two borderline cases: one in which the Shi--Tam extension has zero total mass, and another in which fill-ins of nonnegative scalar curvature fail to exist. Additionally, we prove a type of positive mass theorem in the latter case.

Critical points of Wang-Yau quasi-local energy

In this paper, we prove the following theorem regarding the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy of a spacelike two-surface in a spacetime: Let $Σ$ be a boundary component of some compact, time-symmetric, spacelike hypersurface $Ω$ in a time-oriented spacetime $N$ satisfying the dominant energy condition. Suppose the induced metric on $Σ$ has positive Gaussian curvature and all boundary components of $Ω$ have positive mean curvature. Suppose $H \le H_0$ where $H$ is the mean curvature of $Σ$ in $Ω$ and $H_0$ is the mean curvature of $Σ$ when isometrically embedded in $R^3$. If $Ω$ is not isometric to a domain in $R^3$, then 1. the Brown-York mass of $Σ$ in $Ω$ is a strict local minimum of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy of $Σ$, 2. on a small perturbation $\tildeΣ$ of $Σ$ in $N$, there exists a critical point of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy of $\tildeΣ$.

Extension of a theorem of Shi and Tam

In this note, we prove the following generalization of a theorem of Shi and Tam \cite{ShiTam02}: Let $(Ω, g)$ be an $n$-dimensional ($n \geq 3$) compact Riemannian manifold, spin when $n>7$, with non-negative scalar curvature and mean convex boundary. If every boundary component $Σ_i$ has positive scalar curvature and embeds isometrically as a mean convex star-shaped hypersurface ${\hat Σ}_i \subset \R^n$, then \int_{Σ_i} H d σ\le \int_{{\hat Σ}_i} \hat{H} d {\hat σ} where $H$ is the mean curvature of $Σ_i$ in $(Ω, g)$, $\hat{H}$ is the Euclidean mean curvature of ${\hat Σ}_i$ in $\R^n$, and where $d σ$ and $d {\hat σ}$ denote the respective volume forms. Moreover, equality in (\ref{eqn: main theorem}) holds for some boundary component $Σ_i$ if, and only if, $(Ω, g)$ is isometric to a domain in $\R^n$. In the proof, we make use of a foliation of the exterior of the $\hat Σ_i$'s in $\R^n$ by the $\frac{H}{R}$-flow studied by Gerhardt \cite{Gerhardt90} and Urbas \cite{Urbas90}. We also carefully establish the rigidity statement in low dimensions without the spin assumption that was used in \cite{ShiTam02}

On geometric problems related to Brown-York and Liu-Yau quasilocal mass

We discuss some geometric problems related to the definitions of quasilocal mass proposed by Brown-York \cite{BYmass1} \cite{BYmass2} and Liu-Yau \cite{LY1} \cite{LY2}. Our discussion consists of three parts. In the first part, we propose a new variational problem on compact manifolds with boundary, which is motivated by the study of Brown-York mass. We prove that critical points of this variation problem are exactly static metrics. In the second part, we derive a derivative formula for the Brown-York mass of a smooth family of closed 2 dimensional surfaces evolving in an ambient three dimensional manifold. As an interesting by-product, we are able to write the ADM mass \cite{ADM61} of an asymptotically flat 3-manifold as the sum of the Brown-York mass of a coordinate sphere $S_r$ and an integral of the scalar curvature plus a geometrically constructed function $Φ(x)$ in the asymptotic region outside $S_r $. In the third part, we prove that for any closed, spacelike, 2-surface $Σ$ in the Minkowski space $\R^{3,1}$ for which the Liu-Yau mass is defined, if $Σ$ bounds a compact spacelike hypersurface in $\R^{3,1}$, then the Liu-Yau mass of $Σ$ is strictly positive unless $Σ$ lies on a hyperplane. We also show that the examples given by Ó Murchadha, Szabados and Tod \cite{MST} are special cases of this result.

Some estimates of Wang-Yau quasilocal energy

Given a spacelike 2-surface $Σ$ in a spacetime $N$ and a constant future timelike unit vector $T_0 $ in $\R^{3,1}$, we derive upper and lower estimates of Wang-Yau quasilocal energy $E(Σ, X, T_0)$ for a given isometric embedding $X$ of $Σ$ into a flat 3-slice in $\R^{3,1}$. The quantity $ E(Σ, X, T_0) $ itself depends on the choice of $X$, however the infimum of $ E(Σ, X, T_0)$ over $ T_0 $ does not. In particular, when $Σ$ lies in a time symmetric 3-slice in $N$ and has nonnegative Brown-York quasilocal mass $\mby(Σ)$, our estimates show that $\inf\limits_{T_0}E(Σ, X, T_0)$ equals $ \mby (Σ)$. We also study the spatial limit of $ \inf\limits_{T_0}E(S_r,X_r,T_0)$, where $S_r$ is a large coordinate sphere in a fixed end of an asymptotically flat initial data set $(M, g, p)$ and $X_r$ is an isometric embeddings of $S_r$ into $\mathbb{R}^3 \subset \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. We show that if $(M, g, p)$ has future timelike ADM energy-momentum, then $\lim\limits_{r\to\infty}\inf\limits_{T_0}E(S_r,X_r,T_0)$ equals the ADM mass of $(M, g, p)$.
