Gravity duals of N=2 SCFTs and asymptotic emergence of the electrostatic description

We built the first eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions with SO(2,4)xSO(3)xU(1)_R symmetry that exhibit the asymptotic emergence of an extra U(1) isometry. This enables us to make the connection with the usual electrostatics-quiver description. The solution is obtained via the Toda frame of Kahler surfaces with vanishing scalar curvature and SU(2) action.

Integrable interpolations: From exact CFTs to non-Abelian T-duals

We derive two new classes of integrable theories interpolating between exact CFT WZW or gauged WZW models and non-Abelian T-duals of principal chiral models or geometric coset models. They are naturally constructed by gauging symmetries of integrable models. Our analysis implies that non-Abelian T-duality preserves integrability and suggests a novel way to understand the global properties of the corresponding backgrounds.

Non-integrability in non-relativistic theories

Generic non-relativistic theories giving rise to non-integrable string solutions are classified. Our analysis boils down to a simple algebraic condition for the scaling parameters of the metric. Particular cases are the Lifshitz and the anisotropic Lifshitz spacetimes, for which we find that for trivial dilaton dependence the only integrable physical theory is that for z=1. For the hyperscaling violation theories we conclude that the vast majority of theories are non-integrable, while only for a small class of physical theories, where the Fermi surfaces belong to, integrability is not excluded. Schrodinger theories are also analyzed and a necessary condition for non-integrability is found. Our analysis is also applied to cases where the exponential of the dilaton is a monomial of the holographic coordinate.

The all-loop non-Abelian Thirring model and its RG flow

We analyze the renormalization group flow in a recently constructed class of integrable sigma-models which interpolate between WZW current algebra models and the non-Abelian T-duals of PCM for a simple group G. They are characterized by the integer level k of the current algebra, a deformation parameter lambda and they exhibit a remarkable invariance involving the inversion of lambda. We compute the beta-function for lambda to leading order in 1/k. Based on agreement with previous results for the exact beta-function of the non-Abelian bosonized Thirring model and matching global symmetries, we state that our integrable models are the resummed version (capturing all counterterms in perturbation theory) of the non-Abelian bosonized Thirring model for a simple group G. Finally, we present an analogous treatment in a simple example of a closely related class of models interpolating between gauged WZW coset CFTs and the non-Abelian T-duals of PCM for the coset G/H.

Fermionic impurities in the unquenched ABJM

We study, in a holographic setup, the effect of adding localized fermionic impurities to the three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories with unquenched fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. The impurities are introduced as probe D6-branes extending along the radial direction and wrapping a five-dimensional submanifold inside a squashed CP^3. We analyze the straight flux tube embeddings and study the corresponding fluctuation modes of the D6-branes. The conformal dimensions of the operators dual to such fluctuations depend non-trivially on the ratio of the flavor number to the Chern-Simon level of the unquenched ABJM.

Gravity duals of N = 2 superconformal field theories with no electrostatic description

We construct the first eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions, which are regular, have no smearing and possess only SO(2,4) x SO(3) x U(1)_R isometry. They are dual to four-dimensional field theories with N = 2 superconformal symmetry. We utilise the Toda frame of self-dual four-dimensional Euclidean metrics with SU(2) rotational symmetry. They are obtained by transforming the Atiyah--Hitchin instanton under SL(2,R) and are expressed in terms of theta functions. The absence of any extra U(1) symmetry, even asymptotically, renders inapplicable the electrostatic description of our solution.

Non-Abelian T-duality and the AdS/CFT correspondence:new N=1 backgrounds

We consider non-Abelian T-duality on N=1 supergravity backgrounds possessing well understood field theory duals. For the case of D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, we dualise along an SU(2) isometry. The result is a type-IIA geometry whose lift to M-theory is of the type recently proposed by Bah et. al. as the dual to certain N=1 SCFT quivers produced by M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface. In the non-conformal cases we find smooth duals in massive IIA supergravity with a Romans mass naturally quantised. We initiate the interpretation of these geometries in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that the central charge and the entanglement entropy are left invariant by this dualisation. The backgrounds suggest a form of Seiberg duality in the dual field theories which also exhibit domain walls and confinement in the infrared.

On Non-Abelian T-Duality and new N=1 backgrounds

We study the action of non-Abelian T-duality in the context of N=1 geometries with well understood field theory duals. In the conformal case this gives rise to a new solution that contains an AdS_5 X S^2 piece. In the case of non-conformal geometries we obtain a new background in massive IIA supergravity that presents similar behaviour to the cascade of Seiberg dualities. Some physical observables are discussed.

Supersymmetric AdS_6 via T-duality

We present a new supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of type IIB supergravity with SU(2) isometry. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this has potentially very interesting implications for 5d fixed point theories. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality on the known supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of massive IIA. The SU(2) R-symmetry is untouched, leading to sixteen supercharges and preserved supersymmetry.

Brane embeddings in sphere submanifolds

Wrapping a D(8-p)-brane on AdS_2 times a submanifold of S^{8-p} introduces point-like defects in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence for a Dp-brane background. We classify and work out the details in all possible cases with a single embedding angular coordinate. Brane embeddings of the temperature and beta-deformed near horizon D3-brane backgrounds are also examined. We comment on the relevance of our results to holographic lattices and dimers.

Non-Abelian T-duality and consistent truncations in type-II supergravity

For a general class of SO(4) symmetric backgrounds in type II-supergravity, we show that the action of non-Abelian T-duality can be described via consistent truncation to seven dimensional theories with seemingly massive modes. As such, any solution to these theories uplifts to both massive type IIA and IIB supergravities presenting an invertible map between the two. For supersymmetric backgrounds, we show that for spinors transforming under SO(4) the non-Abelian T-duality transformation breaks the original supersymmetry by half. We use these mappings to generate the non-Abelian T-duals of the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave, the Lin, Lunin, Maldacena geometries and spacetimes with Lifshitz symmetry.

ABJM Baryon Stability and Myers effect

We consider magnetically charged baryon vertex like configurations in AdS^4 X CP^3 with a reduced number of quarks l. We show that these configurations are solutions to the classical equations of motion and are stable beyond a critical value of l. Given that the magnetic flux dissolves D0-brane charge it is possible to give a microscopical description in terms of D0-branes expanding into fuzzy CP^n spaces by Myers dielectric effect. Using this description we are able to explore the region of finite 't Hooft coupling.

High spin limits and non-abelian T-duality

The action of the non-abelian T-dual of the WZW model is related to an appropriate gauged WZW action via a limiting procedure. We extend this type of equivalence to general sigma-models with non-abelian isometries and their non-abelian T-duals, focusing on Principal Chiral models. We reinforce and refine this equivalence by arguing that the non-abelian T-duals are the effective backgrounds describing states of an appropriate parent theory corresponding to divergently large highest weight representations. The proof involves carrying out a subtle limiting procedure in the group representations and relating them to appropriate limits in the corresponding backgrounds. We illustrate the general method by providing several non-trivial examples.

On non-abelian T-dual geometries with Ramond fluxes

We show how to implement T-duality along non-abelian isometries in backgrounds with non-vanishing Ramond fields. When the dimension of the isometry group is odd (even) the duality swaps (preserves) the chirality of the theory. In certain cases a non-abelian duality can result in a massive type-IIA background. We provide two examples by dualising SU(2) isometry subgroups in $AdS_5\times S^5$ and $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$. The resultant dual geometries inherit the original AdS factors but have transverse spaces with reduced isometry and preserve only half of the original supersymmetry. The non-abelian dual of $AdS_5\times S^5$ has an M-theory lift which is related to the gravity duals of N=2 superconformal theories. We comment on a possible interpretation of this as a high spin limit.

Solving field equations in non-isometric coset CFT backgrounds

The largest known class of gravitational backgrounds with an exact string theoretical description is based on coset G/H CFTs and the corresponding gauged WZW models. These backgrounds generically lack isometries and are quite complicated. Thus the corresponding field equations seem impossible to solve and their use in physical applications becomes problematic. We develop a systematic general method enabling us to overcome this problem using group theory. The method is inspired by observations made in some elementary geometric coset and coset CFTs, but its full power is apparent in non-abelian cases. We analyze exhaustively the coset SU(2)xSU(2)/SU(2) and explicitly solve the scalar wave equation of the corresponding gravitational background. We also examine the high spin limit and derive the effective geometry that consistently captures the corresponding sector in the theory.

Systematic classical continuum limits of integrable spin chains and emerging novel dualities

We examine certain classical continuum long wave-length limits of prototype integrable quantum spin chains. We define the corresponding construction of classical continuum Lax operators. Our discussion starts with the XXX chain, the anisotropic Heisenberg model and their generalizations and extends to the generic isotropic and anisotropic gl_n magnets. Certain classical and quantum integrable models emerging from special "dualities" of quantum spin chains, parametrized by c-number matrices, are also presented.

Relativistic Quantum Gravity at a Lifshitz Point

We show that the Horava theory for the completion of General Relativity at UV scales can be interpreted as a gauge fixed theory, and it can be extended to an invariant theory under the full group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms. In this respect, although being fully relativistic, it results to be locally anisotropic in the time-like and space-like directions defined by a family of irrotational observers. We show that this theory propagates generically three degrees of freedom: two of them are related to the four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant graviton (the metric) and one is related to a propagating scalar mode. Finally, we note that in the present formulation, matter can be consistently coupled to gravity.

Supersymmetric deformations of F1-NS5-branes and their exact CFT description

We consider certain classes of operators in the exact conformal field theory SL(2,R) x SU(2) x U(1)^4 describing strings in an AdS(3) x S(3) x T4 geometry supported by Neveu--Schwarz 3-form fluxes. This background arises in the near-horizon limit of a system of NS5-branes wrapped on a 4-torus and F1-branes smeared on the 4-torus when both types of branes are located at the same point in their common transverse space. We find a class of operators that lead to spacetime supersymmetric deformations. It is remarkable that most of these operators are not chiral primary with respect to the N=2 superconformal algebra on the wordsheet. A subset of these worldsheet conformal field theory deformations admits an interpretation either as a geometric deformation of the brane system or as a deformation of the distribution of the F1-branes, viewed as smooth instantons, inside the wrapped NS5-brane worldvolume. The 2-dimensional conformal field theory, however, seems to lack operators corresponding to arbitrary NS5-brane deformations, in contrast to pure NS5-brane systems where all geometric deformations can be accounted for by chiral primary operators.

The black hole and FRW geometries of non-relativistic gravity

We consider the recently proposed non-relativistic Hořava-Lifshitz four-dimensional theory of gravity. We study a particular limit of the theory which admits flat Minkowski vacuum and we discuss thoroughly the quadratic fluctuations around it. We find that there are two propagating polarizations of the metric. We then explicitly construct a spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution that represents the analog of the Schwarzschild solution of GR. We show that this theory has the same Newtonian and post-Newtonian limits as GR and thus, it passes the classical tests. We also consider homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions and we show that although the equations are identical with GR cosmology, the couplings are constrained by the observed primordial abundance of ${}^4{\rm He}$.

Supersymmetric moduli of the SU(2) x R linear dilaton background and NS5-branes

We study several classes of marginal deformations of the conformal field theory SU(2) x R. This theory describes the near-horizon region of a stack of parallel and coincident NS5-branes and is related holographically to little string theory. We investigate the supersymmetry properties of these deformations and we elucidate their role in the context of holography. The conformal field theory moduli space contains "non-holographic" operators that do not seem to have a simple interpretation in little string theory. Subsequently, we analyze several NS5-brane configurations in terms of SU(2) x R deformations. We discuss in detail interesting phenomena, like the excision of the strong coupling region associated with the linear dilaton and the manifestation of the symmetries of an NS5-brane setup in the deforming operators. Finally, we present a class of conformally hyperkaehler geometries that arise as "non-holographic" deformations of SU(2) x R.

Supergravity and the jet quenching parameter in the presence of R-charge densities

Following a recent proposal, we employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the jet quenching parameter for N=4 Yang-Mills theory at nonzero R-charge densities. Using as dual supergravity backgrounds non-extremal rotating branes, we find that the presence of the R-charges generically enhances the jet quenching phenomenon. However, at fixed temperature, this enhancement might or might not be a monotonically increasing function of the R-charge density and depends on the number of independent angular momenta describing the solution. We perform our analysis for the canonical as well as for the grand canonical ensemble which give qualitatively similar results.

Fundamental branes and shock waves

We construct supersymmetric brane solutions in string and M-theory with moduli parameters that depend arbitrarily on the light-cone time. Our investigation aims in understanding time dependent phenomena in gauge theories at strong coupling within the gauge/gravity correspondence. For that reason we use, as a basic ingredient, multicenter supergravity solutions which model the Coulomb branch of the corresponding strongly coupled gauge theories. We introduce the notion of shape invariant motions and show that in a particular limit involving pulse-type motions of finite energy, the solutions represent gravitational shock waves moving on the brane background geometry. We apply the general formalism for D3-branes distributed on a disc and on a sphere as well as for NS5-branes distributed on a ring, all with time varying radii. We examine the problem of open strings attached on moving branes and suggest a mechanism which may be responsible for giving rise at a macroscopic level to gravitational shock waves.

Supersymmetry and Lorentzian holonomy in various dimensions

We present a systematic method for constructing manifolds with Lorentzian holonomy group that are non-static supersymmetric vacua admitting covariantly constant light-like spinors. It is based on the metric of their Riemannian counterparts and the realization that, when certain conditions are satisfied, it is possible to promote constant moduli parameters into arbitrary functions of the light-cone time. Besides the general formalism, we present in detail several examples in various dimensions.

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics from wrapped branes

We explicitly construct a solution of eight-dimensional gauged supergravity representing D6-branes wrapped on six-cycles inside Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The solution preserves two supercharges and asymptotically is a cone with the coset space SU(2)^4/U(1)^3 as its base. It is shown to correspond to an M-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau manifold with SU(5) holonomy and we discuss in detail its geometrical and topological features. We also construct a family of related higher dimensional metrics having SU(n+1) holonomy, which of course have no brane interpretation.

String backgrounds and LCFT

We describe a large class of exact string backgrounds with a null Killing vector arising, via a limiting à la Penrose procedure, from string backgrounds corresponding to coset conformal field theories for compact groups G_N/H_N times a free time-like boson U(1)_{-N}. In this way a class of novel logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFT) emerges, that includes the one constructed recently as an N\to \infty limit of the SU(2)_N/U(1) X U(1)_{-N} theory. We explicitly give the exact operator algebra for the basic chiral fields as well as their representation in terms of free bosons, even though these are not known in general at finite N. We also compute four-point functions of various operators in the theory. For the cases of the four- and five-dimensional models, corresponding to a limit of the theory SO(D+1)_N/SO(D) X U(1)_{-N} for D=3 and 4, we also present the explicit expressions for the background fields.

Rotating NS5-brane solution and its exact string theoretical description

We construct the most general solution in type-II string theory that represents N coincident non-extremal rotating NS5-branes and determine the relevant thermodynamic quantities. We show that in the field theory limit, it has an exact description. In particular, it can be obtained by an O(3,3) duality transformation on the exact string background for the coset model SL(2,R)_{-N}/U(1) \times SU(2)_N. In the extreme supersymmetric limit we recover the multicenter solution, with a ring singularity structure, that has been discussed recently.

Non--Abelian Duality, Parafermions and Supersymmetry

Non--Abelian duality in relation to supersymmetry is examined. When the action of the isometry group on the complex structures is non--trivial, extended supersymmetry is realized non--locally after duality, using path ordered Wilson lines. Prototype examples considered in detail are, hyper--Kahler metrics with SO(3) isometry and supersymmetric WZW models. For the latter, the natural objects in the non--local realizations of supersymmetry arising after duality are the classical non--Abelian parafermions. The canonical equivalence of WZW models and their non--Abelian duals with respect to a vector subgroup is also established.

Stochastic Tachyon Fluctuations, Marginal Deformations and Shock Waves in String Theory

Starting with exact solutions to string theory on curved spacetimes we obtain deformations that represent gravitational shock waves. These may exist in the presence or absence of sources. Sources are effectively induced by a tachyon field that randomly fluctuates around a zero condensate value. It is shown that at the level of the underlying conformal field theory (CFT) these deformations are marginal and moreover all \a'-corrections are taken into account. Explicit results are given when the original undeformed 4-dimensional backgrounds correspond to tensor products of combinations of 2-dimensional CFT's, for instance SL(2,R)/R \times SU(2)/U(1).

Exact string backgrounds from WZW models based on non-semi-simple groups

We formulate WZW models based on a centrally extended version of the Euclidean group in $d$-dimensions. We obtain string backgrounds corresponding to conformal $\s$-models in $D=d^2$ space-time dimensions with exact central charge $c=d^2$ and $d(d-1)/2$ null Killing vectors. By identifying the corresponding conformal field theory we show that the one loop results coincide with the exact ones up to a shifting of a parameter.
