Gravity duals of N=2 SCFTs and asymptotic emergence of the electrostatic description

We built the first eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions with SO(2,4)xSO(3)xU(1)_R symmetry that exhibit the asymptotic emergence of an extra U(1) isometry. This enables us to make the connection with the usual electrostatics-quiver description. The solution is obtained via the Toda frame of Kahler surfaces with vanishing scalar curvature and SU(2) action.

Holographic perfect fluidity, Cotton energy-momentum duality and transport properties

We investigate background metrics for 2+1-dimensional holographic theories where the equilibrium solution behaves as a perfect fluid, and admits thus a thermodynamic description. We introduce stationary perfect-Cotton geometries, where the Cotton--York tensor takes the form of the energy--momentum tensor of a perfect fluid, i.e. they are of Petrov type D_t. Fluids in equilibrium in such boundary geometries have non-trivial vorticity. The corresponding bulk can be exactly reconstructed to obtain 3+1-dimensional stationary black-hole solutions with no naked singularities for appropriate values of the black-hole mass. It follows that an infinite number of transport coefficients vanish for holographic fluids. Our results imply an intimate relationship between black-hole uniqueness and holographic perfect equilibrium. They also point towards a Cotton/energy--momentum tensor duality constraining the fluid vorticity, as an intriguing boundary manifestation of the bulk mass/nut duality.

The all-loop non-Abelian Thirring model and its RG flow

We analyze the renormalization group flow in a recently constructed class of integrable sigma-models which interpolate between WZW current algebra models and the non-Abelian T-duals of PCM for a simple group G. They are characterized by the integer level k of the current algebra, a deformation parameter lambda and they exhibit a remarkable invariance involving the inversion of lambda. We compute the beta-function for lambda to leading order in 1/k. Based on agreement with previous results for the exact beta-function of the non-Abelian bosonized Thirring model and matching global symmetries, we state that our integrable models are the resummed version (capturing all counterterms in perturbation theory) of the non-Abelian bosonized Thirring model for a simple group G. Finally, we present an analogous treatment in a simple example of a closely related class of models interpolating between gauged WZW coset CFTs and the non-Abelian T-duals of PCM for the coset G/H.

Vorticity in holographic fluids

In view of the recent interest in reproducing holographically various properties of conformal fluids, we review the issue of vorticity in the context of AdS/CFT. Three-dimensional fluids with vorticity require four-dimensional bulk geometries with either angular momentum or nut charge, whose boundary geometries fall into the Papapetrou--Randers class. The boundary fluids emerge in stationary non-dissipative kinematic configurations, which can be cyclonic or vortex flows, evolving in compact or non-compact supports. A rich network of Einstein's solutions arises, naturally connected with three-dimensional Bianchi spaces. We use Fefferman--Graham expansion to handle holographic data from the bulk and discuss the alternative for reversing the process and reconstruct the exact bulk geometries.

Gravity duals of N = 2 superconformal field theories with no electrostatic description

We construct the first eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions, which are regular, have no smearing and possess only SO(2,4) x SO(3) x U(1)_R isometry. They are dual to four-dimensional field theories with N = 2 superconformal symmetry. We utilise the Toda frame of self-dual four-dimensional Euclidean metrics with SU(2) rotational symmetry. They are obtained by transforming the Atiyah--Hitchin instanton under SL(2,R) and are expressed in terms of theta functions. The absence of any extra U(1) symmetry, even asymptotically, renders inapplicable the electrostatic description of our solution.

The black M2-M5 ring intersection spins

We review the blackfold description of the fully localized orthogonal M2-M5 intersection in eleven-dimensional supergravity which constitutes the direct gravitational analogue of the Howe-Lambert-West self-dual string soliton solution. We emphasize the preliminary implications of this description for the physics of the M2-M5 system and the novel research directions that it opens. This report contains several new results. As an extension of previous work we report new results on deformations of the M2-M5-KKW intersection that describe self-dual ring intersections. Extremal non-supersymmetric configurations of this type probe novel aspects of the M2-M5 system and allow us to explore further the merits and limitations of the blackfold description of black brane intersections. In particular, we provide an example of a situation where an effective description of extremal non-supersymmetric spike configurations is shown to capture correctly features of the exact solutions beyond its strict regime of validity. This observation hints at the existence of improved convergence properties in the underlying derivative expansion scheme without the necessary presence of supersymmetry.

M2-M5 blackfold funnels

We analyze the basic M2-M5 intersection in the supergravity regime using the blackfold approach. This approach allows us to recover the 1/4-BPS self-dual string soliton solution of Howe, Lambert and West as a three-funnel solution of an effective fivebrane worldvolume theory in a new regime, the regime of a large number of M2 and M5 branes. In addition, it allows us to discuss finite temperature effects for non-extremal self-dual string soliton solutions and wormhole solutions interpolating between stacks of M5 and anti-M5 branes. The purpose of this paper is to exhibit these solutions and their basic properties.

Non-singlet Baryons in Less Supersymmetric Backgrounds

We analyze the holographic description of non-singlet baryons in various backgrounds with reduced supersymmetries and/or confinement. We show that they exist in all AdS_5xY_5 backgrounds with Y_5 an Einstein manifold bearing five form flux, for a number of quarks 5N/8< k< N, independently on the supersymmetries preserved. This result still holds for gamma_i deformations. In the confining Maldacena-Nunez background non-singlet baryons also exist, although in this case the interval for the number of quarks is reduced as compared to the conformal case. We generalize these configurations to include a non-vanishing magnetic flux such that a complementary microscopical description can be given in terms of lower dimensional branes expanding into fuzzy baryons. This description is a first step towards exploring the finite 't Hooft coupling region.

ABJM Baryon Stability and Myers effect

We consider magnetically charged baryon vertex like configurations in AdS^4 X CP^3 with a reduced number of quarks l. We show that these configurations are solutions to the classical equations of motion and are stable beyond a critical value of l. Given that the magnetic flux dissolves D0-brane charge it is possible to give a microscopical description in terms of D0-branes expanding into fuzzy CP^n spaces by Myers dielectric effect. Using this description we are able to explore the region of finite 't Hooft coupling.

String theory applications in gravitational problems and gauge theories

In this dissertation, we review the study of quark and monopole bound-state potentials within the gauge/gravity correspondence. Their behaviors often differ from what is expected on general physical grounds and field-theory considerations. We identify the configurations of physical interest by examining the stability of the string (brane) solutions dual to the flux tubes between the bound states. In particular, we formulate and prove several general statements concerning the perturbative stability of such string (brane) solutions, relevant for these configurations in a general class of backgrounds. We apply the results to N = 4 SYM and N = 1 at finite temperature and at generic points of the Coulomb branch. In all cases, the problematic regions are found to be unstable and hence physically irrelevant.
