N=(0,4) Black String Chains

We construct black string solutions in Type IIA supergravity arising from intersecting D2-D4-D6-NS5 branes in the presence of fractional D4-branes. The fractional D4-branes arise from D6-branes wrapping (collapsing) two-cycles in a Calabi--Yau two-fold. In the near horizon limit these solutions give rise to AdS$_3$ geometries preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry and fall within the recent classification of \cite{Lozano:2019emq}. We interpret our solutions as describing chains of black strings stacked on top of each other along an interval. We construct 2d quiver CFTs dual to our solutions that reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy microscopically.

New results in AdS/CFT in low dimensions from massive Type IIA

We review recent developments in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence in low dimensions, focusing on the construction of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ and AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ dual pairs in massive Type IIA string theory. We start discussing the $\text{AdS}_3\times S^2\times \text{CY}_2\times I$ solutions to massive IIA supergravity with $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry constructed in 1908.09851. We review the 2d CFTs dual to these solutions, together with their defect interpretation as surface defects within 5d fixed point theories living in D4-D8 bound states. Next, we discuss the $\text{AdS}_2\times S^3\times \text{CY}_2\times I$ solutions with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry constructed in 2011.13932. We discuss the superconformal quantum mechanics dual to these solutions, that we interpret in terms of line defects realised as D0-D4 baryon vertices in 5d Sp(N) fixed point theories. We review a particular example in this class of solutions, constructed through non-Abelian T-duality with respect to a non-compact isometry group, and discuss the possible embedding of a 3d black hole geometry constructed long ago via non-Abelian T-duality within this solution.

New AdS$_2$ backgrounds and ${\cal N}=4$ Conformal Quantum Mechanics

We present a new infinite family of Type IIB backgrounds with an AdS$_2$ factor, preserving ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY. For each member of the family we propose a precise dual Super Conformal Quantum Mechanics (SCQM). We provide holographic expressions for the number of vacua (the "central charge"), Chern-Simons terms and other non-perturbative aspects of the SCQM. We relate the "central charge" of the one-dimensional system with a combination of electric and magnetic fluxes in Type IIB. The Ramond-Ramond fluxes are used to propose an extremisation principle for the central charge. Other physical and geometrical aspects of these conformal quantum mechanics are analysed.

$M$-strings and AdS$_3$ solutions to M-theory with small $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry

We construct a general class of (small) $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ superconformal solutions in M-theory of the form AdS$_3\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_k\times \text{CY}_2$, foliated over an interval. These solutions describe M-strings in M5-brane intersections. The $M$-strings support $(0,4)$ quiver CFTs that are in correspondence with our backgrounds. We compute the central charge and show that it scales linearly with the total number of $M$-strings. We introduce momentum charge, thus allowing for a description in terms of M(atrix) theory. Upon reduction to Type IIA, we find a new class of solutions with four Poincaré supercharges of the form AdS$_2\times S^3\times \text{CY}_2\times \mathcal{I}$, that we extend to the massive IIA case. We generalise our constructions to provide a complete class of AdS$_3$ solutions to M-theory with (0,4) supersymmetry and SU(2) structure. We also construct new $AdS_2\times S^3\times \text{M}_4\times \mathcal{I}$ solutions to massive IIA, with M$_4$ a 4d Kähler manifold and four Poincaré supercharges.

1/4 BPS AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We discuss new solutions in massive Type IIA supergravity with AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ factors, preserving ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ SUSY. We propose a duality with a precise family of quivers that flow to ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ fixed points at low energies. These quivers consist on two families of linear quivers coupled by matter fields. Physical observables such as the central charges provide stringent checks of the proposed duality. A formal mapping is presented connecting our backgrounds with those dual to six dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ CFTs, suggesting the existence of a flow across dimensions between the CFTs.

Holographic Description of M-branes via AdS$_2$

We study $\textrm{AdS}_2\times S^4 \times S^2 \times Σ_2$ solutions in type IIB string theory arising from D1 -- D3 -- NS5 brane intersections. These backgrounds enjoy sixteen supercharges and the corresponding internal geometry is non-compact due to the specific form of the warping w.r.t. the Riemann surface $Σ_2$. Even though a direct computation of the holographic free energy of the would-be dual CFT$_1$ yields a divergent behaviour, it reveals the typical $N^3$ scaling of a 6d theory upon introducing a hard cut-off. We claim that such geometries may be interpreted as the gravity duals of M(atrix) models describing an IR phase of the $(2,0)$ theory of M5 branes, in presence of momentum and NUT charges. We discuss parallel $\textrm{AdS}_2$ geometries describing longitudinal M2 branes in the UV, where the counting of the number of degrees of freedom correctly reproduces the expected $N^{3/2}$ behaviour of the dual field theory. These geometries provide explicit examples where deconstructed extra dimensions yield well-defined UV descriptions in terms of higher-dimensional CFTs.

Two dimensional ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ quivers dual to AdS$_3$ solutions in massive IIA

In this paper we discuss an infinite family of new solutions in massive Type IIA supergravity with AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ factors, preserving ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ SUSY. After studying geometrical aspects of the backgrounds we propose a duality with a precise family of quivers that flow to (0,4) fixed points at low energies. These quivers consist on two families of (4,4) linear quivers coupled by matter fields. We present various tests of our proposal.

AdS$_3$ solutions in massive IIA, defect CFTs and T-duality

We establish a map between AdS$_3 \times$S$^2$ and AdS$_7$ solutions to massive IIA supergravity that allows one to interpret the former as holographic duals to D2-D4 defects inside 6d (1,0) CFTs. This relation singles out in a particular manner the AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ solution constructed from AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times $CY$_2$ through non-Abelian T-duality, with respect to a freely acting SU(2). We find explicit global completions to this solution and provide well-defined (0,4) 2d dual CFTs associated to them. These completions consist of linear quivers with colour groups coming from D2 and D6 branes and flavour groups coming from D8 and D4 branes. Finally, we discuss the relation with flows interpolating between AdS$_3\times$S$^2\times$T$^4$ geometries and AdS$_7$ solutions found in the literature.

Field Theory Aspects of non-Abelian T-duality and N=2 Linear Quivers

In this paper we propose a linear quiver with gauge groups of increasing rank as field theory dual to the AdS_5 background constructed by Sfetsos and Thompson through non-Abelian T-duality. The formalism to study 4d N=2 SUSY CFTs developed by Gaiotto and Maldacena is essential for our proposal. We point out an interesting relation between (Hopf) Abelian and non-Abelian T-dual backgrounds that allows to see both backgrounds as different limits of a solution constructed by Maldacena and Nunez. This suggests different completions of the long quiver describing the CFT dual to the non-Abelian T-dual background that match different observables.

Large superconformal near-horizons from M-theory

We report on a classification of supersymmetric solutions to 11D supergravity with $SO(2,2) \times SO(3)$ isometry, which are AdS/CFT dual to 2D CFTs with $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ supersymmetry. We recover the Maldacena, Strominger, Witten (MSW) near-horizon with small superconformal symmetry and identify a class of $AdS_3 \times S^2 \times S^2 \times CY_2$ geometries with emergent large superconformal symmetry. This exhausts known compact geometries. Compactification of M-theory on $CY_2$ results in a vacuum of 7D supergravity with large superconformal symmetry, providing a candidate near-horizon for an extremal black hole and a potential new setting to address microstates.

Supersymmetry and non-Abelian T-duality in type II supergravity

We study the effect of T-duality on supersymmetry in the context of type II supergravity. For both U(1) Abelian and SU(2) non-Abelian T-duality, we demonstrate that the supersymmetry variations after T-duality are related to the variations before T-duality through the Kosmann spinorial Lie derivative, which vanishes when the Killing spinors are independent of the T-duality directions. As a byproduct of our analysis, we present closed expressions for SU(2) T-duality in a class of spacetimes with diagonal Bianchi IX symmetry and comment on specific examples of T-dual geometries, including a novel AdS3 geometry with large N = (0,4) superconformal symmetry.

Three-dimensional N=4 Linear Quivers and non-Abelian T-duals

In this paper we construct a new Type IIB background with an $AdS_4$ factor that preserves ${\cal N}=4$ Supersymmetry. This solution is obtained using a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the Type IIA reduction of the $AdS_4\times S^7$ background. We interpret our configuration as a patch of a more general background with localised sources, dual to the renormalisation fixed point of a $T_ρ^{\hatρ} (SU(N))$ quiver field theory. This relates explicitly the $AdS_4$ geometry to a D3-D5-NS5 brane intersection, illuminating what seems to be a more general phenomenon, relating $AdS_{p+1}$ backgrounds generated by non-Abelian T-duality to Dp-D(p+2)-NS5 branes intersections.

New $AdS_3 \times S^2$ T-duals with $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ supersymmetry

It is well known that Hopf-fibre T-duality and uplift takes the D1-D5 near-horizon into a class of $AdS_3 \times S^2$ geometries in 11D where the internal space is a Calabi-Yau three-fold. Moreover, supersymmetry dictates that Calabi-Yau is the only permissible $SU(3)$-structure manifold. Generalising this duality chain to non-Abelian isometries, a strong parallel exists, resulting in the first explicit example of a class of $AdS_3 \times S^2$ geometries with $SU(2)$-structure. Furthermore, the non-Abelian T-dual of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ results in a new supersymmetric $AdS_3 \times S^2$ geometry, which falls outside of all known classifications. We explore the basic properties of the holographic duals associated to the new backgrounds. We compute the central charges and show that they are compatible with a large $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal algebra in the infra-red.

A new AdS_4/CFT_3 Dual with Extended SUSY and a Spectral Flow

We construct a new AdS_4 background in Type IIB supergravity by means of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the Type IIA dual of ABJM. The analysis of probe and particle-like branes suggests a dual CFT in which each of the gauge groups is doubled. A common feature of non-Abelian T-duality is that in the absence of any global information coming from String Theory it gives rise to non-compact dual backgrounds, with coordinates living in the Lie algebra of the Lie group involved in the dualization. In backgrounds with CFT duals this poses obvious problems to the CFTs. In this paper we show that for the new AdS_4 background the gauge groups of the associated dual CFT undergo a spectral flow as the non-compact internal direction runs from 0 to infinity, which resembles Seiberg duality in N=1. This phenomenon, very reminiscent of the cascade, provides an interpretation in the CFT for the running of the non-compact coordinate, and suggests that at the end of the flow the extra charges disappear and the dual CFT is described by a 2-node quiver very similar to ABJM, albeit with reduced supersymmetry.

Hints of 5d Fixed Point Theories from Non-Abelian T-duality

In this paper we investigate the properties of the putative 5d fixed point theory that should be dual, through the holographic correspondence, to the new supersymmetric AdS(6) solution constructed in Lozano et al. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the known supersymmetric AdS(6) solution of massive Type IIA. The analysis of the charge quantization conditions seems to put constraints on the global properties of the background, which, combined with the information extracted from considering probe branes, suggests a 2-node quiver candidate for the dual CFT.

A giant graviton genealogy

In this article we extend the construction of giant gravitons from holomorphic surfaces [arXiv:hep-th/0010206] to the ABJM correspondence. We construct a new class of 1/6-BPS M5-branes wrapping 5-manifolds in S^7/Z_k and supported by a large angular momentum in the orbifold space. These orbifold giant gravitons undergo a supersymmetry enhancement to 1/3-BPS and 1/2-BPS configurations in special cases. The compactification of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k to type IIA superstring theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 then gives rise to another new class of 1/6-BPS D4 and NS5-branes wrapping 4 and 5-manifolds in CP^3. The D4-branes carry a combination of D0-brane charge and angular momentum in the complex projective space, while the NS5-branes are supported only by D0-brane charge. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of a one-parameter family of 1/2-BPS M5-brane orbifold giant gravitons, and their D4 and NS5-brane CP^3 descendants.

S^2 x S^3 geometries in ABJM and giant gravitons

We construct a new NS5-brane solution in AdS_4 x CP^3 with S^2 x S^3 topology. This solution belongs to the general class of non-Einstein N_{11} metrics to which T^{1,1} belongs, and carries a non-vanishing D0-brane charge. In eleven dimensions it gives rise to a squashed S^2 x S^3 M5-brane giant graviton which is now of the N_{10} type. The energies of both solutions satisfy the BPS bound E=kQ/2, indicating supersymmetric configurations, where Q is interpreted as D0-brane charge for the NS5-brane and as angular momentum for the dynamically stable M5-brane giant graviton. The ground state is degenerate with a spherical D2 or M2-brane, rather than with a point-like object. Moreover, while the charge of the spherical 2-brane can be arbitrary, the charge of the S^2 x S^3 5-brane is bounded by N/2, with N the rank of the ABJM gauge group, a manifestation of the stringy exclusion principle. A microscopic description, suitable for the study of the finite 't Hooft coupling region, is provided in terms of spherical D2 or M2-branes expanding into fuzzy 3-spheres.

Supersymmetric AdS_6 via T-duality

We present a new supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of type IIB supergravity with SU(2) isometry. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this has potentially very interesting implications for 5d fixed point theories. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality on the known supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of massive IIA. The SU(2) R-symmetry is untouched, leading to sixteen supercharges and preserved supersymmetry.

Non-Abelian T-duality and consistent truncations in type-II supergravity

For a general class of SO(4) symmetric backgrounds in type II-supergravity, we show that the action of non-Abelian T-duality can be described via consistent truncation to seven dimensional theories with seemingly massive modes. As such, any solution to these theories uplifts to both massive type IIA and IIB supergravities presenting an invertible map between the two. For supersymmetric backgrounds, we show that for spinors transforming under SO(4) the non-Abelian T-duality transformation breaks the original supersymmetry by half. We use these mappings to generate the non-Abelian T-duals of the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave, the Lin, Lunin, Maldacena geometries and spacetimes with Lifshitz symmetry.

Non-singlet Baryons in Less Supersymmetric Backgrounds

We analyze the holographic description of non-singlet baryons in various backgrounds with reduced supersymmetries and/or confinement. We show that they exist in all AdS_5xY_5 backgrounds with Y_5 an Einstein manifold bearing five form flux, for a number of quarks 5N/8< k< N, independently on the supersymmetries preserved. This result still holds for gamma_i deformations. In the confining Maldacena-Nunez background non-singlet baryons also exist, although in this case the interval for the number of quarks is reduced as compared to the conformal case. We generalize these configurations to include a non-vanishing magnetic flux such that a complementary microscopical description can be given in terms of lower dimensional branes expanding into fuzzy baryons. This description is a first step towards exploring the finite 't Hooft coupling region.

ABJM Baryon Stability and Myers effect

We consider magnetically charged baryon vertex like configurations in AdS^4 X CP^3 with a reduced number of quarks l. We show that these configurations are solutions to the classical equations of motion and are stable beyond a critical value of l. Given that the magnetic flux dissolves D0-brane charge it is possible to give a microscopical description in terms of D0-branes expanding into fuzzy CP^n spaces by Myers dielectric effect. Using this description we are able to explore the region of finite 't Hooft coupling.

Charged Particle-like Branes in ABJM: A Summary

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, requiring additional fundamental strings to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The dynamics reveal that the charges must lie inside some interval, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in AdS_5 x S^5 with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Some ideas about the existence of these bounds in relation to the stringy exclusion principle are given.

Dielectric 5-Branes and Giant Gravitons in ABJM

We construct a supersymmetric NS5-brane wrapped on a twisted 5-sphere expanding in the $CP^3$ in $AdS_4\times CP^3$, with D0-brane charge. This configuration provides a realization of the stringy exclusion principle in terms of giant D0-branes. In the maximal case the twisted 5-sphere reduces to a $CP^2$ and its energy can be accounted for both by a bound state of $k$ D4-branes wrapping the $CP^2$ and a bound state of $N$ D0-branes, a realization on the gravity side of the symmetry of Young diagrams with $N$ rows and $k$ columns. We discuss some generalizations of this configuration in M-theory carrying angular momentum, some of them with an interpretation as giant gravitons. We provide the microscopical description that allows to explore the region of finite 't Hooft coupling.

Charged particle-like branes in ABJM

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, and therefore, require additional fundamental strings in order to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The study of the dynamics reveals that the charges must lie inside some interval in order to find well defined configurations, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Our configurations are sensitive to the flat $B$-field recently suggested in the literature. We make some comments on its possible role. We also discuss how these configurations are modified in the presence of a non-zero Romans mass.

Giant Gravitons and Fuzzy CP^2

In this article we describe the giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n backgrounds that involve 5-spheres, namely, the giant graviton in AdS_4 x S^7 and the dual giant graviton in AdS_7 x S^4, in terms of dielectric gravitational waves. Thus, we conclude the programme initiated in hep-th/0207199 and pursued in hep-th/0303183 and hep-th/0406148 towards the microscopical description of giant gravitons in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes. In our construction the gravitational waves expand due to Myers dielectric effect onto fuzzy 5-spheres which are described as S^1 bundles over fuzzy CP^2. These fuzzy spheres appear as solutions of the matrix model that comes up as the action for M-theory gravitational waves. The validity of our description is checked by confirming the agreement with the Abelian description in terms of a spherical M5-brane when the number of waves goes to infinity.

Giant Gravitons in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 as Fuzzy Cylinders

Using the non-Abelian action for coincident Type IIB gravitational waves proposed in hep-th/0303183 we show that giant gravitons in the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background can be described in terms of coincident waves expanding into a fuzzy cylinder, spanned by two embedding scalars and one worldvolume scalar. This fuzzy cylinder has dipole and magnetic moments with respect to the 2-form and 6-form potentials of the background, and can be interpreted as a bound state of D1-branes and D5-branes (wrapped on the 4-torus) wrapped around the basis of the cylinder. We show the exact agreement between this description and the Abelian, macroscopical description given in the literature.

The gauge invariance of the non-Abelian Chern-Simons action for D-branes revisited

We present an elegant method to prove the invariance of the Chern-Simons part of the non-Abelian action for N coinciding D-branes under the R-R and NS-NS gauge transformations, by carefully defining what is meant by a background gauge transformation in the non-Abelian world volume action. We study as well the invariance under massive gauge transformations of the massive Type IIA supergravity and show that no massive dielectric couplings are necessary to achieve this invariance. We show that this result is consistent with (massive) T-duality from the non-Abelian action for N D9-branes.

A Microscopical Description of Giant Gravitons

We construct a non-Abelian world volume effective action for a system of multiple M-theory gravitons. This action contains multipole moment couplings to the eleven-dimensional background potentials. We use these couplings to study, from the microscopical point of view, giant graviton configurations where the gravitons expand into an M2-brane, with the topology of a fuzzy 2-sphere, that lives in the spherical part of the AdS_7 x S^4 background or in the AdS part of AdS_4 x S^7. When the number of gravitons is large we find perfect agreement with the Abelian, macroscopical description of giant gravitons given in the literature.

A Microscopical Description of Giant Gravitons II: The AdS_5 x S^5 Background

In this article we continue with the microscopical investigation of giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes, initiated in hep-th/0207199. Using dualities and a Matrix theory derivation we propose an action that describes multiple Type IIB gravitons. This action contains multipole moment couplings to the Type IIB background potentials. Using these couplings, we study, from the microscopical point of view, the giant graviton and dual giant graviton configurations in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. In both cases the gravitons expand into a non-commutative 3-sphere, that is defined as an S^1-bundle over a fuzzy 2-sphere. When the number of gravitons is large we find perfect agreement with the Abelian, macroscopical description of giant gravitons in this spacetime, given in the literature.

Chern-Simons Couplings for Dielectric F-Strings in Matrix String Theory

We compute the non-abelian couplings in the Chern-Simons action for a set of coinciding fundamental strings in both the type IIA and type IIB Matrix string theories. Starting from Matrix theory in a weakly curved background, we construct the linear couplings of closed string fields to type IIA Matrix strings. Further dualities give a type IIB Matrix string theory and a type IIA theory of Matrix strings with winding.

Branes from Unstable Systems of Branes

We discuss various aspects of the description of branes as topological solitons in unstable brane systems of higher dimensions. We first describe a classification of all the possible realisations of branes of M and type II theories as topological solitons of a brane-antibrane system. We then present a description of type IIB NS-NS p-branes in terms of topological solitons in systems of spacetime-filling NS9, anti-NS9 pairs and discuss the implications of these constructions in the description of BPS and non-BPS states in the strongly coupled Heterotic SO(32) theory. We finally present briefly the construction of a conjectured spacetime-filling non-BPS M10-brane, starting point for a brane descent construction of the branes of M-theory.

S-Duality and Brane Descent Relations

We present a description of the type IIB NS-NS p-branes in terms of topological solitons in systems of spacetime-filling brane-antibrane pairs. S-duality implies that these spacetime-filling branes are NS9-branes, S-dual to the D9-branes of the type IIB theory. The possible vortex-like solutions in an NS9,anti-NS9 configuration are identified by looking at its worldvolume effective action. Finally we discuss the implications of these constructions in the description of BPS and non-BPS states in the strongly coupled Heterotic SO(32) theory.
