Dominant Kitaev Interaction and Field-induced Quantum Disordered Phase in the Cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The identification of quantum spin liquid phases in Kitaev candidate materials remains a major experimental challenge. Since most Kitaev candidates develop antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperatures, currently there are great interest on the field-induced magnetic disordered phase in these compounds, that are distinct from (partially) polarized states. Recently, a cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has emerged as a promising Kitaev candidate with high-spin $t^{5}_{2g}e^2_g$ configuration and spin-orbit entangled $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ honeycomb lattice system. There are intensive studies on field-induced magnetic states and phase transitions under in-plane magnetic fields. In this study, we propose an intermediate disordered phase induced by an out-of-plane field along the $c$-axis, through high-field magnetization and magnetocaloric effect measurements. To explain the high-field behavior of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, we develop an effective $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ^{\prime}$ spin model featuring a dominant AFM Kitaev interaction. This framework uncovers an intermediate quantum spin liquid phase, establishing the material as a unique platform for exploring Kitaev physics and field-induced quantum-disordered states.

Quantum paramagnetism in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-ZnIrO$_3$

A polycrystalline sample of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ was synthesized via a topochemical reaction, and its structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties were investigated. The magnetization and heat capacity data show the absence of long-range magnetic order at least down to 2 K. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_W \sim 45$ K probed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicates that a Kitaev interaction is dominant. These observations suggest that a quantum spin liquid may have been realized. Furthermore, the observation of linear temperature-dependent contribution to the heat capacity with no magnetic field effect evidences gapless excitation. These facts are surprisingly contrary to the chemical disorder evidenced by the crystallographic analysis. By discussing the differences in the size effect of Z$_2$-fluxes in 2D and 3D Kitaev magnets, we propose that there is a hidden mechanism to protect the quantum spin liquid state from chemical disorder.

SmI3: 4f5 honeycomb magnet with spin-orbital entangled Γ7 Kramers doublet

We report magnetic properties of a 4f-honeycomb iodide SmI3 made up of edge-shared network of SmI6 octahedra. High temperature magnetic susceptibility indicates Γ7 Kramers doublet ground state of Sm3+ (4f5) ions stabilized by the spin-orbit coupling and octahedral crystal electric field, which interact with Sm-I-Sm bond angle nearly 90 degree. Magnetization measurements down to 0.1 K detected antiferromagnetic correlations and an anomaly in the magnetization curve before saturation without a sign of long-range order. Relevance between SmI3 and the antiferromagnetic Kitaev material proposed in the 4f-electron system is discussed.

Geometrical Hall effect and momentum-space Berry curvature from spin-reversed band pairs

When nanometric, noncoplanar spin textures with scalar spin chirality (SSC) are coupled to itinerant electrons, they endow the quasiparticle wavefunctions with a gauge field, termed Berry curvature, in a way that bears analogy to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The resulting deflection of moving charge carriers is termed geometrical (or topological) Hall effect. Previous experimental studies modeled this signal as a real-space motion of wavepackets under the influence of a quantum-mechanical phase. In contrast, we here compare the modification of Bloch waves themselves, and of their energy dispersion, due to SOC and SSC. Using the canted pyrochlore ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ as a model compound, our transport experiments and first-principle calculations show that SOC impartially mixes electronic bands with equal or opposite spin, while SSC is much more effective for opposite spin band pairs.

Thermal and magnetoelastic properties of α-RuCl3 in the field-induced low temperature states

We discuss the implications that new magnetocaloric, thermal expansion and magnetostriction data in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ single crystals have on its temperature-field phase diagram and uncover the magnetic-field dependence of an apparent energy gap structure $Δ(H)$ that evolves when the low temperature antiferromagnetic order is suppressed. We show that, depending on how the thermal expansion data is modeled, $Δ(H)$ can show a cubic field dependence and remain finite at zero field, consistent with the pure Kitaev model hosting itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ fluxes. Our magnetocaloric effect data provides, below $1\,\mathrm{K}$, unambiguous evidence for dissipative phenomena at $H_{\mathrm{c}}$, smoking gun for a first order phase transition. Our results, on the other hand, show little support for a phase transition from a QSL to a polarized paramagnetic state above $H_{\mathrm{c}}$.

Avoided quantum criticality and cluster-glass formation in itinerant ferromagnet Sr$_{1-x}$(La$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)$_x$RuO$_3$

We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the critical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic field. Furthermore, specific heat is enhanced within a wide temperature range, whereas specific heat shows no salient anomaly associated with spin freezing. These features are characteristics of the formation of cluster-glass; in particular, the observed frequency variations in ac magnetic susceptibility are well described by the Vogel-Fulcher law. We compare the features concerning the suppression of the ferromagnetic order in this doped compound with those in isostructural Ca- and La-doped SrRuO3, and suggest that a local correlated disorder effect and the very small coherence of itinerant Ru 4d electrons are responsible for the cluster-glass formation instead of the quantum phase transition in Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3.

Data-driven determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters and their uncertainties: The case of the zigzag-chain compound KCu$_4$P$_3$O$_{12}$

We propose a data-driven technique to estimate the spin Hamiltonian, including uncertainty, from multiple physical quantities. Using our technique, an effective model of KCu$_4$P$_3$O$_{12}$ is determined from the experimentally observed magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves with various temperatures under high magnetic fields. An effective model, which is the quantum Heisenberg model on a zigzag chain with eight spins having $J_1= -8.54 \pm 0.51 \{\rm meV}$, $J_2 = -2.67 \pm 1.13 \{\rm meV}$, $J_3 = -3.90 \pm 0.15 \{\rm meV}$, and $J_4 = 6.24 \pm 0.95 \{\rm meV}$, describes these measured results well. These uncertainties are successfully determined by the noise estimation. The relations among the estimated magnetic interactions or physical quantities are also discussed. The obtained effective model is useful to predict hard-to-measure properties such as spin gap, spin configuration at the ground state, magnetic specific heat, and magnetic entropy.

Ferrimagnetic States of Na-K Alloy Clusters in Zeolite Low-Silica X

In zeolite low-silica X (LSX), beta-cages with the inside diameter of approx 7 AA{} are arrayed in a diamond structure. Among them, supercages with the inside diameter of approx 13 AA{} are formed and arrayed in a diamond structure by the sharing of windows with the inside diameter of approx 8 AA{}. The chemical formula of zeolite LSX used in the present study is given by Na$_{x}$K$_{12-x}$Al$_{12}$Si$_{12}$O$_{48}$ per supercage (or beta-cage), where Na$_{x}$K$_{12-x}$ and Al$_{12}$Si$_{12}$O$_{48}$ are the exchangeable cations of zeolite LSX and the aluminosilicate framework, respectively. Na-K alloy clusters are incorporated in these cages by the loading of guest K metal at $n$K atoms per supercage (or beta-cage). A N'eel's N-type ferrimagnetism has been observed at $n = 7.8$ for $x = 4$. In the present paper, optical, magnetic and electrical properties are studied in detail mainly for $x = 4$. Ferrimagnetic properties are observed at $6.5 < n < 8.5$. At the same time, the Curie constant suddenly increases. An optical reflection band of beta-cage clusters at 2.8 eV is observed at $n > 6.5$ in accordance with the sudden increase in the Curie constant. An electrical resistivity indicates metallic values at $n$ gtrapprox 6, because a metallic state is realized in the energy band of supercage clusters. The ferrimagnetism is explained by the antiferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic sublattice of itinerant electron ferromagnetism at supercage clusters and that of localized moments at beta-cage clusters. The electrical resistivity in ferrimagnetic samples at $n = 8.2$ for $x = 4$ increases extraordinarily at very low temperatures, such as approx $10^6$ times larger than the value at higher temperatures. Observed anomalies in the electrical resistivity resembles the Kondo insulator, but itinerant electrons of narrow energy band of supercage clusters are ferromagnetic.

Observation of the in-plane magnetic field-induced phase transitions in FeSe

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of FeSe under the in-plane magnetic fields using torque magnetometry, specific heat, magnetocaloric measurements. Below the upper critical field Hc2, we observed the field-induced anomalies at H1 ~ 15 T and H2 ~ 22 T near H//ab and below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 2 K. The transition magnetic fields H1 and H2 exhibit negligible dependence on both temperature and field orientation. This contrasts with the strong temperature and angle dependence of Hc2, suggesting that these anomalies are attributed to the field-induced phase transitions, originating from the inherent spin-density-wave instability of quasiparticles near the superconducting gap minima or possible Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the highly spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. Our observations imply that FeSe, an atypical multiband superconductor with extremely small Fermi energies, represents a unique model system for stabilizing unusual superconducting orders beyond the Pauli limit.

Magnetic and Structural Properties of A-Site Ordered Chromium Spinel Sulfides: Alternating Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Interactions in the Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magnetization curves of LiInCr4S8 and CuInCr4S8 have large hysteresis loops with different shapes, while there is no hysteresis in that of LiGaCr4S8. Geometrical frustration of the small tetrahedron is likely to give rise to a wide variety of ground states, indicating the rich physics in these antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic breathing pyrochlore magnets.

Magnetic Transitions under Ultrahigh Magnetic Fields of up to 130 T in the Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8

The magnetization processes of the spin-3/2 antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8 comprising a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice, which is an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, are studied under ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 130 T using state-of-the-art pulsed magnets. A half magnetization plateau is observed above 90 T to 130 T, suggesting that LiInCr4O8 has a strong spin-lattice coupling, similar to conventional chromium spinel oxides. The magnetization of LiGa0.125In0.875Cr4O8, in which the structural and magnetic transitions at low temperatures have been completely suppressed, shows a sudden increase above 13 T, indicating that a spin gap of 2.2 meV exists between a tetramer singlet ground state and an excited state with total spin 1, with the latter being stabilized by the application of a magnetic field. The breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet is found to be a unique frustrated system with strong spin-lattice coupling and bond alternation.

Magnetism of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramer compound CuInVO$_5$

We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization of CuInVO$_5$. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 2.7$ K. We observed a $\frac{1}{2}$ quantum magnetization plateau above 30 T at 1.3 K. We show that the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramers with $J_1 = 240 \pm 20$ and $J_2 = -142 \pm 10$ K for the intratetramer interactions.

Origin of positive out-of-plane magnetoconductivity in overdoped Bi$_{1.6}$Pb$_{0.4}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{1.96}$Fe$_{0.04}$O$_{8+δ}$

To elucidate the pseudogap phase diagram including the overdoped state of high transition temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprates, we must understand the origin of the positive out-of-plane magnetoconductivity (MC) observed in these compounds. For this purpose, the out-of-plane resistivity $ρ_c(T,H)$ of an overdoped Bi$_{1.6}$Pb$_{0.4}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{1.96}$Fe$_{0.04}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) single crystal is measured under pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. We show that the superconductive density-of-states (DOS) depletion effect, in addition to the pseudogap effect, clearly appears below the superconductive fluctuation regime, and the contribution becomes dominant in the superconducting state.

Spin state ordering of strongly correlating LaCoO$_{3}$ induced at ultrahigh magnetic fields

Magnetization measurements of LaCoO$_{3}$ have been carried out up to 133 T generated with a destructive pulse magnet at a wide temperature range from 2 to 120 K. A novel magnetic transition was found at $B>100$ T and $T>T^{*}=32\pm 5$ K which is characterized by its transition field increasing with increasing temperature. At $T<T^{*}$, the previously reported transition at $B\sim65$ T was observed. Based on the obtained $B$-$T$ phase diagram and the Clausius-Clapeyron relation, the entropy of the high-field phase at 80 K is found to be smaller for about $1.5$ J K$^{-1}$ mol$^{-1}$ than that of the low-field phase. We suggest that the observed two high-field phases may originate in different spatial orders of the spin states and possibly other degrees of freedom such as orbitals. An inherent strong correlation of spin states among cobalt sites should have triggered the emergence of the ordered phases in LaCoO$_{3}$ at high magnetic fields.

Field-driven successive phase transitions in quasi-two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoTeO$_6$ and highly degenerate classical ground states

We report the results of magnetization and specific heat measurements of Ba$_2$CoTeO$_6$ composed of two subsystems A and B, which are magnetically described as an $S\,{=}\,1/2$ triangular-lattice Heisenberg-like antiferromagnet and a $J_1-J_2$ honeycomb-lattice Ising-like antiferromagnet, respectively. These two subsystems were found to be approximately decoupled. Ba$_2$CoTeO$_6$ undergoes magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\rm N1}\,{=}\,12.0$ K and $T_{\rm N2}\,{=}\,3.0$ K, which can be interpreted as the orderings of subsystems B and A, respectively. Subsystem A exhibits a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization for the magnetic field $H$ perpendicular to the $c$ axis owing to the quantum order-by-disorder, whereas for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$, subsystem B shows three-step metamagnetic transitions with magnetization plateaus at zero, one-third and one-half of the saturation magnetization. The analysis of the magnetization process for subsystem B shows that the classical ground states at these plateaus are infinitely degenerate within the Ising model.

Generation of flat-top pulsed magnetic fields with feedback control approach

We describe the construction of a simple, compact, and cost-effective feedback system that produces flat-top field profiles in pulsed magnetic fields. This system is designed for use in conjunction with a typical capacitor-bank driven pulsed magnet, and was tested using a 60-T pulsed magnet. With the developed feedback controller, we have demonstrated flat-top magnetic fields as high as 60.64 T with an excellent field stability of +-0.005 T. The result indicates that the flat-top pulsed magnetic field produced features high field stability and an accessible field strength. These features make this system useful for improving the resolution of data with signal averaging.

Possible Excitonic Phase of Graphite in the Quantum Limit State

The in-plane resistivity, Hall resistivity and magnetization of graphite were investigated in pulsed magnetic fields applied along the \textit{c}-axis. The Hall resistivity approaches zero at around 53 T where the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivities steeply decrease. The differential magnetization also shows an anomaly at around this field with a similar amplitude compared to that of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at lower fields. This transition field appears insensitive to disorder, but reduces with doping holes. These results suggest the realization of the quantum limit states above 53 T. As a plausible explanation for the observed gapped out-of-plane conduction above 53 T, the emergence of the excitonic BCS-like state in graphite is proposed.

Successive magnetic phase transitions in $\bmα$-RuCl$_3$: XY-like frustrated magnet on the honeycomb lattice

The layered compound $α$-RuCl$_3$ is composed of a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions with the $4d^5$ electronic state. We have investigated the magnetic properties of $α$-RuCl$_3$ via magnetization and specific heat measurements using single crystals. It was observed that $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{t}\,{\simeq}\,150$ K accompanied by fairly large hysteresis. This structural phase transition is expected to be similar to that observed in closely related CrCl$_3$. The magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities are strongly anisotropic, which mainly arise from the anisotropic $g$-factors, i.e., $g_{ab}\,{\simeq}\,2.5$ and $g_c\,{\simeq}\,0.4$ for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane, respectively. These $g$-factors and the obtained entropy indicate that the effective spin of Ru$^{3+}$ is one-half, which results from the low-spin state. Specific heat data show that magnetic ordering occurs in four steps at zero magnetic field. The successive magnetic phase transitions should be ascribed to the competition among exchange interactions. The magnetic phase diagram for $H\,{\parallel}\,ab$ is obtained. We discuss the strongly anisotropic $g$-factors in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and deduce that the exchange interaction is strongly XY-like. $α$-RuCl$_3$ is magnetically described as a three-dimensionally coupled XY-like frustrated magnet on a honeycomb lattice.

Almost Perfect Frustration in the Dimer Magnet Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$

We determined the crystal structure of Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which was synthesized in this work, and investigated its quantum magnetic properties using single crystals. This compound should be described as a two-dimensionally coupled spin-1/2 XY-like spin dimer system. Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ exhibits a stepwise magnetization process with a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization, irrespective of the field direction, although all the Co$^{2+}$ sites are equivalent. This indicates that spin triplets are localized owing to the almost perfect frustration of interdimer exchange interactions. Thus, the spin states for the zero and 1/2 magnetization-plateau states are almost exactly given by the simple product of singlet dimers and the alternate product of singlet and triplet dimers, respectively.

Anomalous Itinerant-Electron Metamagnetic Transition in the Layered Sr1-xCaxCo2P2 System

We report magnetic properties of the layered itinerant system, Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ in the magnetic field up to 70 T. As for the exchange-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal SrCo$_2$P$_2$, the magnetization curve shows two characteristic anomalies. The low-field anomaly is small without obvious hysteresis, and the high-field one is a typical behavior of the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition (IEMT). Such a successive transition in the magnetization curve cannot be explained by the conventional phenomenological theory for IEMT due to the Landau expansion of the free energy, but by the extended Landau expansion theory with distinguishable two energy states. In the systematical study of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$, furthermore, the metamagnetic transition field decreases and goes to zero as $x$ increases up to 0.5, indicating that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) exists at $x \sim 0.5$.

NaCuMoO_4(OH) as a Candidate Frustrated J_1-J_2 Chain Quantum Magnet

In a frustrated J_1-J_2 chain with the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction J_1 and the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction J_2, novel magnetic states such as a spin-nematic state are theoretically expected. However, they have been rarely examined in experiments because of the difficulty in obtaining suitable model compounds. We show here that the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet NaCuMoO_4(OH), which comprises edge-sharing CuO_2 chains, is a good candidate J_1-J_2 chain antiferromagnet. The exchange interactions are estimated as J_1 = - 51 K and J_2 = 36 K by comparing the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and magnetization data with the data obtained using calculations by the exact diagonalization method. High-field magnetization measurements at 1.3 K show a saturation above 26 T with little evidence of a spin nematic state expected just below the saturation field, which is probably due to smearing effects caused by thermal fluctuations and the polycrystalline nature of the sample.

Successive magnetic transitions of Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ in high magnetic fields

Magnetic and dielectric properties of åkermanite Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ single crystals were investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields. In magnetic fields along the $c$ axis, this material shows a magnetization plateau in a wide range of field below the saturation. Magnetization processes for fields along the $a$ and $b$ axes show multiple anomalies but different traces to each other, indicating the breaking of four-fold symmetry. Measurements of the magnetoelectric effects exhibit the changes in electric polarization according to the changes in the spin system. The experimentally determined quadratic magnetoelectric tensor is consistent with that expected in the crystal symmetry of orthorhombic $P2_12_12$.

Magnetization Process and Collective Excitations in the S=1/2 Triangular-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Ba3CoSb2O9

We have performed high-field magnetization and ESR measurements on Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ single crystals, as a representative two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a uniform triangular lattice, and have determined all the magnetic parameters. For an applied magnetic field $H$ parallel to the $ab$-plane, the entire magnetization curve including the plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization ($M_\mathrm{s}$) is in excellent agreement with the results of theoretical calculations except an anomaly near $(3/5)M_\mathrm{s}$, indicative of an additional field-induced transition. However, for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$, the magnetization curve exhibits a cusp near $M_\mathrm{s}/3$. Paramagnetic resonance signals above the Néel temperature indicate the nearly isotropic $g$-factor. A detailed analysis of the collective ESR modes observed in the ordered state, combined with the magnetization process, provides evidence of the weak easy-plane anisotropy.

Ferromagnetism induced in anisotropic stacked kagome-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$

The magnetic properties of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ were investigated through magnetization and specific heat measurements. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ is composed of a buckled kagome lattice of Cu$^{2+}$, which is stacked along the b axis. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is strongly anisotropic. Consequently, Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. The dangling spins couple with one another via effective exchange interactions, which are mediated by chain spins. The dangling spins are further divided into two subsystems, DS1 and DS2. The dangling spins in DS1 undergo three-dimensional ferromagnetic ordering at 3.14 K, while those in DS2 remain paramagnetic down to 0.35 K. The effective interaction between the DS1 spins is approximately expressed by the ferromagnetic $XXZ$ model with the $z$ direction parallel to the crystallographic c axis. A magnetic phase diagram for $H {\parallel} c$ was obtained and was analyzed within the framework of the molecular field approximation. With increasing magnetic field, the dangling spins are polarized and the magnetization curve exhibits a wide plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization.

Experimental Realization of Spin-1/2 Triangular-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We report the results of magnetization and specific heat measurements on Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$, in which the magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ion has a fictitious spin-1/2, and show evidence that a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a regular triangular lattice is actually realized in Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. We found that the entire magnetization curve including the one-third quantum magnetization plateau is in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations at a quantitative level.

High-field magnetization and magnetic phase transition in CeOs2Al10

We have studied the magnetization of CeOs2Al10 in high magnetic fields up to 55 T for H // a and constructed the magnetic phase diagram for H // a. The magnetization curve shows a concave H dependence below T_max \sim40 K which is higher than the transition temperature T_0 \sim29 K. The magnetic susceptibility along the a-axis shows a smooth and continuous decrease down to \sim20 K below T_max \sim40 K without showing an anomaly at T_0. From these two results, a Kondo singlet is formed below T_max and coexists with the antiferro magnetic order below T_0. We also propose that the larger suppression of the spin degrees of freedom along the a-axis than along the c-axis below T_max is associated with the origin of the antiferro magnetic component.

Magnetic Field and Pressure Phase Diagrams of Uranium Heavy-Fermion Compound U$_2$Zn$_{17}$

We have performed magnetization measurements at high magnetic fields of up to 53 T on single crystals of a uranium heavy-fermion compound U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ grown by the Bridgman method. In the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 9.7 K, a metamagnetic transition is found at $H_c$ $\simeq$ 32 T for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction ($a$-axis). The magnetic phase diagram for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction is given. The magnetization curve shows a nonlinear increase at $H_m$ $\simeq$ 35 T in the paramagnetic state above $T_{\rm N}$ up to a characteristic temperature $T_{χ{\rm max}}$ where the magnetic susceptibility or electrical resistivity shows a maximum value. This metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization at $H_m$ is discussed in comparison with the metamagnetic magnetism of the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt$_3$, URu$_2$Si$_2$, and UPd$_2$Al$_3$. We have also carried out high-pressure resistivity measurement on U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ using a diamond anvil cell up to 8.7 GPa. Noble gas argon was used as a pressure-transmitting medium to ensure a good hydrostatic environment. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ is almost pressure-independent up to 4.7 GPa and starts to increase in the higher-pressure region. The pressure dependences of the coefficient of the $T^2$ term in the electrical resistivity $A$, the antiferromagnetic gap $Δ$, and the characteristic temperature $T_{ρ{\rm max}}$ are discussed. It is found that the effect of pressure on the electronic states in U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ is weak compared with those in the other heavy fermion compounds.

Magnetic Properties of Spinel FeCr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ in High Magnetic Field

We studied temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization, $M(T)$ and $M(B)$, on thiospinel FeCr$_{2}$S$_{4}$. We observed a step-like anomaly at $T_{OO} \sim$ 9 K for $M$($T$) attributed to an orbital order transition in magnetic field 0 $< B \leq$ 7 T. Furthermore, also for $M$($B$), an step-like anomaly appears at $B_{c} \sim$ 5.5 T below $T_{OO}$. This suggests an existence of a magnetic phase boundary at $B_{c}$ in $T < T_{OO}$. Because the anomaly at $B_{c}$ of $M(B)$ exists in the orbital ordered phase, the spin structure of FeCr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ in $T\ <\ T_{OO}$ is strongly coupled with the lattice of the system.

Magnetization Plateaus in the Spin-1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnets: Volborthite and Vesignieite

The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetization plateau in the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. The excess magnetization over Ms/3 is nearly equal to the sum of the magnetizations gained at the second and third magnetization steps in volborthite, suggesting that there is a common origin for the excess magnetization and the magnetization steps.

High Field ESR and Magnetization of the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

We report the experimental and the analytical results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization in high magnetic fields up to about 68 T of the quasi two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$. From the temperature evolution of the ESR absorption linewidth, we find a distinct disturbing of the development of the spin correlation by $Z_2$-vortices between 23 K and 8.5 K. Below $T_{\rm{v}}=8.5$ K, spin-wave calculations based on a 57$^{\circ}$ spiral spin order well explains the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields and high field magnetization processes for $H$$\parallel$$c$ and $H$$\perp$$c$, although the magnetization for $H$$\perp$$c$ at high fields is different from the calculated one. Furthermore, we explain the field independent specific heat with $T^2$-dependence by the same spin-wave calculation, but the magnitude of the specific heat is much less than the observed one. Accordingly, these results suggest the occurrence of a $Z_2$ vortex-induced topological transition at $T_{\rm{v}}$ and may indicate quantum effects beyond the descriptions based on the above classical spin models.

High-Field Magnetization of CeRu2Al10

The magnetization measurements of CexLa1-xRu2Al10 (x = 1, 0.75) under the high magnetic field were performed in order to obtain the information for the long-range order (LRO) in CeRu2Al10. We successfully obtained the magnetic phase diagram of these two compounds for the applied magnetic field along the a-axis which is the magnetization easy axis, and found that the LRO for x = 1 disappears at ~50 T which is the critical field to the paramagnetic phase. For x = 0.75, the critical magnetic field decreases to ~37 T by La substitution. The magnetic phase diagram and magnetization curve are qualitatively consistent with the recent Hanzawa's mean field calculation results obtained by assuming the dimer of Ce ions whose crystalline electric field ground state has a large magnetic anisotropy. These results support the singlet pair formation scenario recently proposed by Tanida et al.. We also pointed out the possibility of the appearance of the field-induced magnetic phase between ~40 T and ~50 T for x = 1.

Interplay between quantum criticality and geometrical frustration in Fe3Mo3N with stella quadrangula lattice

In the eta-carbide-type correlated-electron metal Fe3Mo3N, ferromagnetism is abruptly induced from a nonmagnetic non-Fermi-liquid ground state either when a magnetic field (~14 T) applied to it or when it is doped with a slight amount of impurity (~5% Co). We observed a peak in the paramagnetic neutron scattering intensity at finite wave vectors, revealing the presence of the antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation hidden in the magnetic measurements. It causes a new type of geometrical frustration in the stellla quadrangula lattice of the Fe sublattice. We propose that the frustrated AF correlation suppresses the F correlation to its marginal point and is therfore responsible for the origin of the ferromagnetic (F) quantum critical behavior in pure Fe3Mo3N.

Magnetization and Magnetoresistance of CeRu2Al10 under High Magnetic Fields along c-Axis

We have studied the magnetization and magnetoresistance of CeRu2Al10 in the applied magnetic field H along the c-axis up to ~ 55 T. The magnetization M at low temperatures shows an H-linear increase with a small slope of M/H than that for H // a-axis up to ~ 55 T after showing a small anomaly at H ~ 4 T, which indicates that the critical field to the paramagnetic phase H_c^p is higher than 55 T for H // c-axis. The magnetization curves for H // a- and c-axes below the antiferro magnetic (AFM) transition temperature T0 behave as if the magnetic anisotropy in the AFM-ordered phase is small, although there exists a large magnetic anisotropy in the paramagnetic phase, which favors the easy magnetization axis along the a-axis. On the other hand, very recently, Khalyavin et al. have reported that the AFM order where the magnetic moment is parallel to the c-axis takes place below T0. These results indicate that the AFM order in this compound is not a simple one. The longitudinal magnetoresistance for H // c-axis at low temperatures shows no anomaly originating from the phase transition, but shows oscillations below 4.2 K. This oscillatory behavior below 4.2 K originates from the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, from which the cross section of the Fermi surface normal to the c-axis is estimated to be 1.0*10^14 cm-2, with no large effective mass. This is the first direct evidence of the existence of the Fermi surface below T0.

Magnetization "Steps" on a Kagome Lattice in Volborthite

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome-like compound volborthite are studied using a high-quality polycrystalline sample. It is evidenced from magnetization and specific heat measurements that the spins on the kagome lattice still fluctuate at low temperature, down to T = 60 mK that corresponds to 1/1500 of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, exhibiting neither a conventional long-range order nor a spin gap. In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields.

Synthesis, Structural and magnetic properties of the solid solution (CuCl1-xBrx)LaNb2O7 (0<x<1)

The two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin system (CuCl)LaNb2O7 has a spin-singlet ground state with a gap of 2.3 meV, while the isostructural material (CuBr)LaNb2O7 displays collinear antiferromagnetic order at TN = 32 K. Here we report on the synthesis of solid solution (CuCl1-xBrx)LaNb2O7 (0 < x < 1), and its structural and magnetic properties by means of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and neutron diffraction studies. The x-dependence of cell parameters follows Vegards law, verifying the uniform distribution of Cl and Br atoms at the halide site, though a more complex structural evolution is inferred from an opposing correlation between the intra- and interlayer cell distances (vs. x). 5%-Br substitution is found to induce antiferromagnetic order with TN = 7 K, consistent with a recent mSR study, and the magnetic structure is collinear, having a significantly reduced moment. Further Br substitution leads to a linear increase in TN up to x = 1. These results indicate that (CuCl)LaNb2O7 is located in the vicinity of the quantum phase boundary.

Upper critical fields of the 11-system iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeSe$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$

We have performed electrical resistivity measurements of a polycrystalline sample of FeSe$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$, which exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \sim 14$ K, in magnetic fields up to 55 T to determine the upper critical field $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$. In this compound, very large slopes of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$ at the onset, the mid-point, the zero-resistivity temperatures on superconductivity are determined to be -13.7, -10.1, and -6.9 T/K, respectively. The observed $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}(T)$s of this compound are considerably smaller than those expected from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, manifesting the Pauli limiting behavior. These results suggest that this compound has a large Maki parameter, but it is smaller than that calculated for a weak-coupling superconductor, indicating a large superconducting gap of this compound as a strong-coupling superconductor.

Awaking of ferromagnetism in GaMnN through control of Mn valence

Room temperature ferromagnetism of GaMnN thin films is awaked by a mild hydrogenation treatment of samples synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy. Local environment of Mn atoms is monitored by Mn-L2,3 near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) technique. Doped Mn ions are present at substitutional sites of Ga both before and after the hydrogenation. No secondary phase can be detected. Major valency of Mn changes from +3 to +2 by the hydrogenation. The present result supports the model that the ferromagnetism occurs when Mn2+ and Mn3+ are coexistent and holes in the mid- gap Mn band mediate the magnetic coupling.

Magnetic Properties of a Quantum Ferrimagnet: NiCu(pba)(D_2O)_3 . 2D_2O

We report the results of magnetic measurements on a powder sample of NiCu(pba)(D_2O)_3 \cdot 2D_2O$ (pba=1,3-propylenebis(oxamato)) which is one of the prototypical examples of an $S$=1/2 and 1 ferrimagnetic chain. Susceptibility($χ$) shows a monotonous increase with decreasing temperature (T) and reaches a maximum at about 7 K. In the plot of $χT$ versus $T$, the experimental data exhibit a broad minimum and are fit to the $χT$ curve calculated for the ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of S=1/2 and 1. From this fit, we have evaluated the nearest-neighbor exchange constant $J/k_B=121 K$, the g-values of Ni$^{2+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$, $g_{Ni}$=2.22 and $g_{Cu}$=2.09, respectively. Applied external field dependence of $χT$ at low temperatures is reproduced fairly well by the calculation for the same ferrimagnetic model.
