Elastic Soft Mode and Electric Quadrupole Response in Excitonic Insulator Candidate (Ta$_{0.952}$V$_{0.048}$)$_2$NiSe$_5$: Contribution of Electron-Phonon Interaction

We performed ultrasonic measurements on (Ta$_{0.952}$V$_{0.048}$)$_2$NiSe$_5$ to investigate the contribution of acoustic phonons at the zone center to structural and possible excitonic transitions. The transverse elastic constant $C_{55}$ with irreducible representation $B_\mathrm{2g}$ exhibits softening over 90\% above a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{s} = 280$ K, indicating the soft mode of corresponding TA phonons. Our analysis based on the quadrupole response indicates that the electron-phonon interaction contributes to the excitonic transition in addition to the hybridization between the conduction and valence bands if the excitonic transition is realized.

Extremely high upper critical field in BiCh$_2$-based (Ch: S and Se) layered superconductor LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.22 and 0.69)

Centrosymmetric compounds with local inversion symmetry breaking have tremendously interesting and intriguing physical properties. In this study, we focus on a BiCh$_2$-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor, as a system with local inversion asymmetry, because spin polarisation based on the Rashba-Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit coupling has been observed in centrosymmetric BiCh$_2$-based LaOBiS$_2$ systems, while the BiCh$_2$ layer lacks local inversion symmetry. Herein, we report the existence of extremely high in-plane upper critical fields in the BiCh$_2$-based system LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.22 and 0.69). The superconducting states are not completely suppressed by the applied magnetic fields with strengths up to 55 T. Thus, we consider that the in-plane upper critical field is enhanced by the local inversion symmetry breaking and its layered structure. Our study will open a new pathway for the discovery of superconductors that exhibit a high upper critical field by focusing on the local inversion symmetry breaking.

Ferroelectric transition of a chiral molecular crystal BINOL2DMSO

We report dielectric, thermodynamical, acoustic, and optical properties of a chiral molecular crystal, 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol 2-dimethylsulfoxide (BINOL2DMSO). We find two successive phase transitions at Tc1=190 K and Tc2=125 K. The first transition at Tc1 is characterized by an order-disorder transition of the guest molecules DMSO along with ferroelectricity. At the second transition of Tc2, the crystal structure deforms from tetragonal to monoclinic, leading to domain formation. Low-temperature x-ray diffraction suggests that the space group changes from P4_12_12 (P4_32_12) to P4_1 (P4_3) at Tc1, and down to P112_1 at Tc2.

Magnetovolume Effect on the First-Order Metamagnetic Transition in UTe$_2$

The link between the metamagnetic transition and novel spin-triplet superconductivity of UTe$_2$ was discussed thermodynamically through magnetostriction measurements in a pulsed-magnetic field. We revealed a discontinuous magnetostriction across the metamagnetic transition at $μ_0H_{\rm m}\approx 35$~T for the applied magnetic fields along the crystallographic $b$ axis in the orthorhombic structure. The resultanting volume magnetostriction of $ΔV/V \approx-5.9\times 10^{-4}$ gives the initial pressure dependence of $H_{\rm m}$ by employing the Clausius-Clapeyron's equation, which agrees with previous pressure experiments. Further, significant anisotropic magnetostriction (AMS), derived by subtracting the averaged linear magnetostriction, was revealed. Contrary to the weakly field-dependent AMS along the $a$ axis, those along the $b$ and $c$ axes show strong field dependences with a similar magnitude but with opposite signs, indicating its lattice instability. The relationship between characteristic energy scales of magnetic fields and temperatures was discussed in terms of the Grüneisen parameters compared to the other $f$-electron systems. The volume shrinkage in UTe$_2$ at $H_{\rm m}$, contrary to the volume expansion in typical heavy fermion metamagnets, pushes to invoke the link with the valence instability related to the itinerant-localized dual nature of the U magnetism.

Spin-orbit-derived giant magnetoresistance in a layered magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2

Two-dimensional magnetic materials have recently attracted great interest due to their unique functions as the electric field control of a magnetic phase and the anomalous spin Hall effect. For such remarkable functions, a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) serves as an essential ingredient. Here we report a giant positive magnetoresistance in a layered magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2, which is a manifestation of the subtle combination of the SOC and Zeeman-type spin splitting. When the carrier concentration approaches the critical value of 2.5\times10^18 cm^-3, a sizable positive magnetoresistance of ~400 % emerges upon the application of magnetic fields normal to the conducting layers. Based on the magneto-Seebeck effect and the first-principles calculations, the unconventional magnetoresistance is ascribable to the enhancement of effective carrier mass in the SOC induced J = 3/2 state, which is tuned to the Fermi level through the Zeeman splitting enhanced by the p-d coupling. This study demonstrates a new aspect of the SOC-derived magnetotransport in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors, paving the way to novel spintronic functions.

Geometrical Hall effect and momentum-space Berry curvature from spin-reversed band pairs

When nanometric, noncoplanar spin textures with scalar spin chirality (SSC) are coupled to itinerant electrons, they endow the quasiparticle wavefunctions with a gauge field, termed Berry curvature, in a way that bears analogy to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The resulting deflection of moving charge carriers is termed geometrical (or topological) Hall effect. Previous experimental studies modeled this signal as a real-space motion of wavepackets under the influence of a quantum-mechanical phase. In contrast, we here compare the modification of Bloch waves themselves, and of their energy dispersion, due to SOC and SSC. Using the canted pyrochlore ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ as a model compound, our transport experiments and first-principle calculations show that SOC impartially mixes electronic bands with equal or opposite spin, while SSC is much more effective for opposite spin band pairs.

Domain Control by Adjusting Anisotropic Stress in Pyrochlore Oxide Cd2Re2O7

The 5d pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 exhibits successive phase transitions from a cubic pyrochlore structure (phase I) to a tetragonal structure without inversion symmetry below Ts1 of ~200 K (phase II) and further to another noncentrosymmetric tetragonal structure below Ts2 of ~120 K (phase III). The two low-temperature phases may be characterized by odd-parity multipolar orders induced by the Fermi liquid instability of the spin-orbit-coupled metal. To control the tetragonal domains generated by the transitions and to obtain a single-domain crystal for the measurements of anisotropic properties, we prepared single crystals with the (0 0 1) surface and applied biaxial and uniaxial stresses along the plane. Polarizing optical microscopy observations revealed that inducing a small strain of approximately 0.05% could flip the twin domains ferroelastically in a reversible fashion at low temperatures, which evidences that the tetragonal deformation switches at Ts2 between c > a for phase II and c < a for phase III. Resistivity measurements using single-domain crystals under uniaxial stress showed that the anisotropy was maximum at around Ts2 and turned over across Ts2: resistivity along the c axis is larger (smaller) than that along the a axis by ~25% for phase II (III) at around Ts2. These large anisotropies probably originate from spin-dependent scattering in the spin-split Fermi surfaces of the cluster electric toroidal quadrupolar phases of Cd2Re2O7.

Direct coupling of ferromagnetic moment and ferroelectric polarization in BiFeO$_3$

The spin-driven component of electric polarization in a single crystal of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ was experimentally investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 41 T. Sequential measurements of electric polarization for various magnetic field directions provide clear evidence of electric polarization normal to the hexagonal $c$ axis (${\bf P}_{\rm t}$) in not only the cycloidal phase, but also the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic phase. The direction of ${\bf P}_{\rm t}$ is directly coupled with the ferromagnetic moment in the canted antiferromagnetic phase, and thus controlled by changing the direction of the applied magnetic field. This magnetoelectric coupling is reasonably reproduced by the metal-ligand hybridization model.

Metamagnetic transitions and magnetoelectric responses in a chiral polar helimagnet Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$

Magnetic-field effect on the magnetic and electric properties in a chiral polar ordered corundum Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ has been investigated. Single-crystal soft x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements confirm long-wavelength magnetic modulation. The modulation direction tends to align along the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, suggesting that the nearly proper-screw type helicoid should be formed below 77\,K. The application of a high magnetic field causes a metamagnetic transition. In a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, a helix-to-canted antiferromagnetic transition takes place through the intermediate soliton lattice type state. On the other hand, a magnetic field applied along the polar axis induces a first-order metamagnetic transition. These metamagnetic transitions accompany a change in the electric polarization along the polar axis.

Magnetic and Structural Properties of A-Site Ordered Chromium Spinel Sulfides: Alternating Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Interactions in the Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magnetization curves of LiInCr4S8 and CuInCr4S8 have large hysteresis loops with different shapes, while there is no hysteresis in that of LiGaCr4S8. Geometrical frustration of the small tetrahedron is likely to give rise to a wide variety of ground states, indicating the rich physics in these antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic breathing pyrochlore magnets.

Magnetic Transitions under Ultrahigh Magnetic Fields of up to 130 T in the Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8

The magnetization processes of the spin-3/2 antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8 comprising a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice, which is an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, are studied under ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 130 T using state-of-the-art pulsed magnets. A half magnetization plateau is observed above 90 T to 130 T, suggesting that LiInCr4O8 has a strong spin-lattice coupling, similar to conventional chromium spinel oxides. The magnetization of LiGa0.125In0.875Cr4O8, in which the structural and magnetic transitions at low temperatures have been completely suppressed, shows a sudden increase above 13 T, indicating that a spin gap of 2.2 meV exists between a tetramer singlet ground state and an excited state with total spin 1, with the latter being stabilized by the application of a magnetic field. The breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet is found to be a unique frustrated system with strong spin-lattice coupling and bond alternation.

Magnetic-field-induced spin crossover of Y-doped Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$

The family of hole-doped Pr-based perovskite cobaltites, Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3}$ and (Pr$_{1-y}$RE$_{y}$)$_{0.3}$Ca$_{0.7}$CoO$_{3}$ (where RE is rare earth) has recently been found to exhibit simultaneous metal-insulator, spin-state, and valence transitions. We have investigated magnetic-field-induced phase transitions of (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ by means of magnetization measurements at 4.2$-$100 K up to an ultrahigh magnetic field of 140 T with the chemical pressure varied by $y$ = 0.0625, 0.075, 0.1. The observed magnetic-field-induced transitions were found to occur simultaneously with the metal-insulator transitions up to 100 T. The obtained magnetic field-temperature ($B$-$T$) phase diagram and magnetization curves are well analyzed by a spin-crossover model of a single ion with interion interactions. On the other hand, the chemical pressure dependence of the experimentally obtained magnetization change during the phase transition disagrees with the single ion model when approaching low temperatures. The significant $y$ dependence of the magnetization change at low temperatures may arise from the itinerant magnetism of Co$^{3+}$ in the paramagnetic metallic phase, where the chemical pressure enhances the exchange splitting by promoting the double-exchange interaction. The observed $B$-$T$ phase diagrams of (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ are quite contrary to that of LaCoO$_{3}$, indicating that in (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ the high-field phase possesses higher entropy than the low-field phase, whereas it is the other way around in LaCoO$_{3}$.

Quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation of spin triplets in dimerized quantum magnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$

We synthesized single crystals of composition Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ and investigated its quantum magnetic properties. The crystal structure is closely related to that of the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) dimerized magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ also known as Han purple. Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\,{=}\,20.8$ K. The magnetization curves for two different field directions almost perfectly coincide when normalized by the $g$-factor except for a small jump anomaly for a magnetic field perpendicular to the $c$ axis. The magnetization curve with a nonlinear slope above the critical field is in excellent agreement with exact-diagonalization calculations based on a 2D coupled spin-dimer model. Individual exchange constants are also evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results demonstrate a 2D exchange network and weak frustration between interdimer exchange interactions, supported by weak spin-lattice coupling implied from our magnetostriction data. The magnetic-field-induced spin ordering in Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ is described as the quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensation of triplets.

Anomalous Quantum Transport Properties in Semimetallic Black Phosphorus

Magnetoresistance in single crystals of black phosphorus is studied at ambient and hydrostatic pressures. In the semiconducting states at pressures below 0.71 GPa, the magnetoresistance shows periodic oscillations, which can be ascribed to the magneto-phonon resonance that is characteristic of high mobility semiconductors. In the metallic state above 1.64 GPa, the both transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance show titanic increase with exhibiting superposed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The observed small Fermi surfaces, high mobilities and light effective masses of carriers in semimetallic black phosphorus are comparable to those in the representative elemental semimetals of bismuth and graphite.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Polar Phase in Chiral Magnet CsCuCl$_3$

Magnetoelectric effects in the chiral magnet CsCuCl$_3$ have been investigated through the magnetization and electric polarization measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields. If the magnetic field is applied normal to the spin chiral c-axis, a plateau and a jump in magnetization are observed. Between the plateau and the jump in magnetization, a small but significant electric polarization of about 0.25 μC/m$^2$ along the a-axis is observed with the field applied almost perpendicular to the ac-plane. In addition, the paramagnetoelectric effect expected from the point group symmetry is confirmed. The emergence of the electric polarization is explained by the cooperation of the local electric polarization on the chiral solitonic spin arrangement and the paramagnetoelectric effect. Hence, we interpret this novel multiferroic phase in CsCuCl$_3$ as a polar solitonic phase.

Possible Excitonic Phase of Graphite in the Quantum Limit State

The in-plane resistivity, Hall resistivity and magnetization of graphite were investigated in pulsed magnetic fields applied along the \textit{c}-axis. The Hall resistivity approaches zero at around 53 T where the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivities steeply decrease. The differential magnetization also shows an anomaly at around this field with a similar amplitude compared to that of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at lower fields. This transition field appears insensitive to disorder, but reduces with doping holes. These results suggest the realization of the quantum limit states above 53 T. As a plausible explanation for the observed gapped out-of-plane conduction above 53 T, the emergence of the excitonic BCS-like state in graphite is proposed.

Anisotropic upper critical field of BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2

Superconducting properties under high magnetic fields for the novel BiS2-based layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 (polycrystalline sample prepared using the high-pressure synthesis method) have been investigated. The anisotropy of the upper critical field was discussed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the temperature derivative of resistivity. The temperature dependence of upper critical field showed an anomalous behavior with a characteristic magnetic field of 8 T. We revealed that the anomalous behavior was caused by the existence of three kinds of upper critical field, HC2max, HC2mid and HC2min in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. The lowest upper critical field HC2min is regarded as the Hc2 where the superconducting states of the grains with an orientation of H // c are suppressed. The HC2max and HC2mid are regarded as the Hc2 where the superconducting states of the grains with an orientation of H // ab are suppressed. The difference between the HC2max and HC2mid could be explained by the anisotropy of superconducting states within the Bi-S plane. The estimated anisotropy parameter of the upper critical fields was about 7.4 for the high-pressure-synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 polycrystalline sample. Since the value was clearly lower than the anisotropy parameter of over 30 observed in the previous report on the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 single crystals grown under ambient pressure, we concluded that a larger anisotropy of superconductivity was not essential for the enhancement of Tc, and lower anisotropy might be important for a higher Tc in LaO1-xFxBiS2.

Successive magnetic transitions of Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ in high magnetic fields

Magnetic and dielectric properties of åkermanite Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ single crystals were investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields. In magnetic fields along the $c$ axis, this material shows a magnetization plateau in a wide range of field below the saturation. Magnetization processes for fields along the $a$ and $b$ axes show multiple anomalies but different traces to each other, indicating the breaking of four-fold symmetry. Measurements of the magnetoelectric effects exhibit the changes in electric polarization according to the changes in the spin system. The experimentally determined quadratic magnetoelectric tensor is consistent with that expected in the crystal symmetry of orthorhombic $P2_12_12$.

Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in the Metal-Insulator Transition of Pyrochlore Oxide Nd2Ir2O7

We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we revealed that the large negative MR effect of the pyrochlore iridate Ln2Ir2O7 depends on the magnetism of the lanthanide Ln^{3+} ion. The d-f interaction plays a significant role in the large negative MR effect in the insulating state.

Field-Induced Magnetostructural Transitions in Antiferromagnetic Fe1+yTe1-xSx

The transport and structural properties of Fe1+yTe1-xSx (x=0, 0.05, and 0.10) crystals were studied in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. The application of high magnetic fields results in positive magnetoresistance effect with prominent hystereses in the antiferromagnetic state. Polarizing microscope images obtained at high magnetic fields showed simultaneous occurrence of structural transitions. These results indicate that magnetoelastic coupling is the origin of the bicollinear magnetic order in iron chalcogenides.

Magnetization Plateaus in the Spin-1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnets: Volborthite and Vesignieite

The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetization plateau in the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. The excess magnetization over Ms/3 is nearly equal to the sum of the magnetizations gained at the second and third magnetization steps in volborthite, suggesting that there is a common origin for the excess magnetization and the magnetization steps.

Magnetization "Steps" on a Kagome Lattice in Volborthite

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome-like compound volborthite are studied using a high-quality polycrystalline sample. It is evidenced from magnetization and specific heat measurements that the spins on the kagome lattice still fluctuate at low temperature, down to T = 60 mK that corresponds to 1/1500 of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, exhibiting neither a conventional long-range order nor a spin gap. In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields.

Successive phase transitions and phase diagrams of the quasi-two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet Rb4Mn(MoO4)3

Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic, thermal and neutron measurements have clarified that Rb4Mn(MoO4)3 is a model system of a quasi-2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy, exhibiting successive transitions across an intermediate collinear phase. As a rare case for geometrically frustrated magnetism, quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is found for complete, anisotropic phase diagrams as well as magnetic properties.
