Quantum half-orphans in kagome antiferromagnets

We numerically study the effects of non-magnetic impurities (vacancies) in the spin-$S$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice. For a range of low but nonzero temperatures, and spin values that extend down to $S=2$, we find that the magnetization response to an external magnetic field is consistent with the response of emergent "half-orphan" degrees of freedom that are expected to dominate the response of the corresponding classical magnet in a similar temperature range whenever there are two vacancies on the same triangle. Specifically, for all spin values we have considered (from $S=1/2$ to $S=4$), there is a large enhancement of the local susceptibility of the lone spin on such a triangle with two vacancies; in the presence of a uniform magnetic field $h$, this lone-spin behaves effectively as an almost free spin $S$ in an effective field $h/2$. Quite remarkably, in the zero temperature limit, the ground state in the presence of a half-orphan has a non-zero total spin value $S_{GS}$ that shows a trend similar to $S/2$ when $S\ge 2$. These qualitative aspects of the response differ strikingly from the more conventional response of diluted samples without such half-orphan degrees of freedom. We discuss how these findings could be checked experimentally.

Extremal statistics of entanglement eigenvalues can track the many-body localized to ergodic transition

Some interacting disordered many-body systems are unable to thermalize when the quenched disorder becomes larger than a threshold value. Although several properties of nonzero energy density eigenstates (in the middle of the many-body spectrum) exhibit a qualitative change across this many-body localization (MBL) transition, many of the commonly-used diagnostics only do so over a broad transition regime. Here, we provide evidence that the transition can be located precisely even at modest system sizes by sharply-defined changes in the distribution of extremal eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix of subsystems. In particular, our results suggest that $p* = \lim_{λ_2 \rightarrow \ln(2)^{+}}P_2(λ_2)$, where $P_2(λ_2)$ is the probability distribution of the second lowest entanglement eigenvalue $λ_2$, behaves as an ''order-parameter'' for the MBL phase: $p*> 0$ in the MBL phase, while $p* = 0$ in the ergodic phase with thermalization. Thus, in the MBL phase, there is a nonzero probability that a subsystem is entangled with the rest of the system only via the entanglement of one subsystem qubit with degrees of freedom outside the region. In contrast, this probability vanishes in the thermal phase.

Nonlinear Fluctuating Hydrodynamics for the Classical XXZ Spin Chain

Using the framework of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NFH), we examine equilibrium spatio-temporal correlations in classical ferromagnetic spin chains with nearest neighbor interactions. In particular, we consider the classical XXZ-Heisenberg spin chain (also known as Lattice Landau Lifshitz or LLL model) evolving deterministically and chaotically via Hamiltonian dynamics, for which energy and $z$-magnetization are the only locally conserved fields. For the easy-plane case, this system has a low-temperature regime in which the difference between neighboring spin's angular orientations in the XY plane is an \textit{almost conserved} field. According to the predictions of NFH, the dynamic correlations in this regime exhibit a heat peak and propagating sound peaks, all with anomalous broadening. We present a detailed molecular dynamics test of these predictions and find a reasonably accurate verification. We find that, in a suitable intermediate temperature regime, the system shows two sound peaks with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling and a heat peak where the expected anomalous broadening is less clear. In high temperature regimes of both easy plane and easy axis case of LLL, our numerics show clear diffusive spin and energy peaks and absence of any sound modes, as one would expect. We also simulate an integrable version of the XXZ-model, for which the ballistic component instead moves with a broad range of speeds rather than being concentrated in narrower peaks around the sound speed.

Sign-problem-free Monte Carlo simulation of certain frustrated quantum magnets

We introduce a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method which efficiently simulates in a sign-problem-free way a broad class of frustrated $S=1/2$ models with competing antiferromagnetic interactions. Our scheme uses the basis of total spin eigenstates of clusters of spins to avoid the severe sign problem faced by other QMC methods. We also flag important limitations of the new method, and comment on possibilities for further progress.

Vacancy-induced low-energy states in undoped graphene

We demonstrate that a nonzero concentration $n_v$ of static, randomly-placed vacancies in graphene leads to a density $w$ of zero-energy quasiparticle states at the band-center $ε=0$ within a tight-binding description with nearest-neighbour hopping $t$ on the honeycomb lattice. We show that $w$ remains generically nonzero in the compensated case (exactly equal number of vacancies on the two sublattices) even in the presence of hopping disorder, and depends sensitively on $n_v$ and correlations between vacancy positions. For low, {\em but not-too-low} $|ε|/t$ in this compensated case, we show that the density of states (DOS) $ρ(ε)$ exhibits a strong divergence of the form $ρ_{\rm 1D}(ε) \sim |ε|^{-1}/ [\log(t/|ε|)]^{(y+1)} $, which crosses over to the universal low-energy asymptotic form expected on symmetry grounds $ρ_{\rm GW}(ε) \sim |ε|^{-1}e^{-b[\log(t/|ε|)]^{2/3} }$ below a crossover scale $ε_c \ll t$. $ε_c$ is found to decrease rapidly with decreasing $n_v$, while $y$ decreases much more slowly.

Classical spin-liquid on the maximally frustrated honeycomb lattice

We show that the honeycomb Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J_1/2=J_2=J_3$, where $J_{1/2/3}$ are first-, second- and third-neighbour couplings respectively, forms a classical spin liquid with pinch-point singularities in the structure factor at the Brillouin zone corners. Upon dilution with non-magnetic ions, fractionalised degrees of freedom carrying $1/3$ of the free moment emerge. Their effective description in the limit of low-temperature is that of spins randomly located on a triangular lattice, with a frustrated interaction of long-ranged logarithmic form. The XY version of this magnet exhibits nematic thermal order by disorder, which comes with a clear experimental diagnostic.

Columnar order and Ashkin-Teller criticality in mixtures of hard-squares and dimers

We show that critical exponents of the transition to columnar order in a {\em mixture} of $2 \times 1$ dimers and $2 \times 2$ hard-squares on the square lattice {\em depends on the composition of the mixture} in exactly the manner predicted by the theory of Ashkin-Teller criticality, including in the hard-square limit. This result settles the question regarding the nature of the transition in the hard-square lattice gas. It also provides the first example of a polydisperse system whose critical properties depend on composition. Our ideas also lead to some interesting predictions for a class of frustrated quantum magnets that exhibit columnar ordering of the bond-energies at low temperature.

Melting of three-sublattice order in easy-axis antiferromagnets on triangular and Kagome lattices

When the constituent spins have an energetic preference to lie along an easy-axis, triangular and Kagome lattice antiferromagnets often develop long-range order that distinguishes the three sublattices of the underlying triangular Bravais lattice. In zero magnetic field, this three-sublattice order melts {\em either} in a two-step manner, {\em i.e.} via an intermediate phase with power-law three-sublattice order controlled by a temperature dependent exponent $η(T) \in (\frac{1}{9},\frac{1}{4})$, {\em or} via a transition in the three-state Potts universality class. Here, I predict that the uniform susceptibility to a small easy-axis field $B$ diverges as $χ(B) \sim |B|^{-\frac{4 - 18 η}{4-9η}}$ in a large part of the intermediate power-law ordered phase (corresponding to $η(T) \in (\frac{1}{9},\frac{2}{9})$), providing an easy-to-measure thermodynamic signature of two-step melting. I also show that these two melting scenarios can be generically connected via an intervening multicritical point, and obtain numerical estimates of multicritical exponents.

Quantum cluster algorithm for frustrated Ising models in a transverse field

Working within the stochastic series expansion framework, we introduce and characterize a new quantum cluster algorithm for quantum Monte Carlo simulations of transverse field Ising models with frustrated Ising exchange interactions. As a demonstration of the capabilities of this new algorithm, we show that a relatively small, ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour coupling drives the transverse field Ising antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice from an antiferromagnetic three-sublattice ordered state at low temperature to a ferrimagnetic three-sublattice ordered state.

Random Coulomb antiferromagnets: from diluted spin liquids to Euclidean random matrices

We study a disordered classical Heisenberg magnet with uniformly antiferromagnetic interactions which are frustrated on account of their long-range Coulomb form, {\em i.e.} $J(r)\sim -A\ln r$ in $d=2$ and $J(r)\sim A/r$ in $d=3$. This arises naturally as the $T\rightarrow 0$ limit of the emergent interactions between vacancy-induced degrees of freedom in a class of diluted Coulomb spin liquids (including the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on checkerboard, SCGO and pyrochlore lattices) and presents a novel variant of a disordered long-range spin Hamiltonian. Using detailed analytical and numerical studies we establish that this model exhibits a very broad paramagnetic regime that extends to very large values of $A$ in both $d=2$ and $d=3$. In $d=2$, using the lattice-Green function based finite-size regularization of the Coulomb potential (which corresponds naturally to the underlying low-temperature limit of the emergent interactions between orphan-spins), we only find evidence that freezing into a glassy state occurs in the limit of strong coupling, $A=\infty$, while no such transition seems to exist at all in $d=3$. We also demonstrate the presence and importance of screening for such a magnet. We analyse the spectrum of the Euclidean random matrices describing a Gaussian version of this problem, and identify a corresponding quantum mechanical scattering problem.

Resonating valence-bond physics on the honeycomb lattice

We study bond and spin correlations of the nearest-neighbour resonating valence bond (RVB) wavefunction for a SU($2$) symmetric $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice. We find that spin correlations in this wavefunction are short-ranged, while the bond energy correlation function takes on an oscillatory power-law form $D(\vec{r}) \sim \cos({\mathbf Q}\cdot {\vec{r}}) /|{\vec{r}}|^{η_w(2)}$, where ${\mathbf Q} = (2π/3, -2π/3)$ is the wavevector corresponding to "columnar" valence-bond solid order on the honeycomb lattice, and $η_w(2) \approx 1.49(3)$. We use a recently introduced large-$g$ expansion approach to relate bond-energy correlators of the SU($g$) wavefunction to dimer correlations of an interacting fully-packed dimer model with a three-dimer interaction of strength $V(g)=-\log(1+1/g^2)$. Putting $g=2$, we find numerically that the dimer correlation function $D^{d}(\vec{r})$ of this dimer model has power-law behaviour $D^{d}(\vec{r}) \sim \cos({\mathbf Q}\cdot {\vec{r}}) /|{\vec{r}}|^{η_d(2)}$ with $η_d(2) \approx 1.520(15)$, in rather good agreement with the wavefunction results. We also study the same quantities for $g=3,4,10$ and find that the bond-energy correlations in the SU($g$) wavefunction are consistently well-reproduced by the corresponding dimer correlations in the interacting dimer model.

Transitions to valence-bond solid order in a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet

We use Quantum Monte-Carlo methods to study the ground state phase diagram of a S=1/2 honeycomb lattice magnet in which a nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J (favoring Néel order) competes with two different multi-spin interaction terms: a six-spin interaction Q_3 that favors columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order, and a four-spin interaction Q_2 that favors staggered VBS order. For Q_3 ~ Q_2 >> J, we establish that the competition between the two different VBS orders stabilizes Néel order in a large swathe of the phase diagram even when J is the smallest energy-scale in the Hamiltonian. When Q_3 >> (Q_2,J) (Q_2 >> (Q_3,J)), this model exhibits at zero temperature phase transition from the Néel state to a columnar (staggered) VBS state. We establish that the Néel-columnar VBS transition is continuous for all values of Q_2, and that critical properties along the entire phase boundary are well-characterized by critical exponents and amplitudes of the non-compact CP^1 (NCCP^1) theory of deconfined criticality, similar to what is observed on a square lattice. However, a surprising three-fold anisotropy of the phase of the VBS order parameter at criticality, whose presence was recently noted at the Q_2=0 deconfined critical point, is seen to persist all along this phase boundary. We use a classical analogy to explore this by studying the critical point of a three-dimensional XY model with a four-fold anisotropy field which is known to be weakly irrelevant at the three-dimensional XY critical point. In this case, we again find that the critical anisotropy appears to saturate to a nonzero value over the range of sizes accessible to our simulations.

Néel to valence-bond solid transition on the honeycomb lattice: Evidence for deconfined criticality

We study a spin-1/2 SU(2) model on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange $J$ that favors Néel order, and competing 6-spin interactions $Q$ which favor a valence bond solid (VBS) state in which the bond-energies order at the "columnar" wavevector ${\mathbf K} = (2π/3,-2π/3)$. We present quantum Monte-Carlo evidence for a direct continuous quantum phase transition between Néel and VBS states, with exponents and logarithmic violations of scaling consistent with those at analogous deconfined critical points on the square lattice. Although this strongly suggests a description in terms of deconfined criticality, the measured three-fold anisotropy of the phase of the VBS order parameter shows unusual near-marginal behaviour at the critical point.

Antiferromagnetic order in systems with doublet $S_{\rm tot}=1/2$ ground states

We use projector Quantum Monte-Carlo methods to study the $S_{\rm tot}=1/2$ doublet ground states of two dimensional $S=1/2$ antiferromagnets on a $L \times L$ square lattice with an odd number of sites $N_{\rm tot}=L^2$. We compute the ground state spin texture $Φ^z(\vec{r}) = <S^z(\vec{r})>_{\uparrow}$ in $|G>_{\uparrow}$, the $S^z_{\rm tot}=1/2$ component of this doublet, and investigate the relationship between $n^z$, the thermodynamic limit of the staggered component of this ground state spin texture, and $m$, the thermodynamic limit of the magnitude of the staggered magnetization vector of the same system in the singlet ground state that obtains for even $N_{\rm tot}$. We find a univeral relationship between the two, that is independent of the microscopic details of the lattice level Hamiltonian and can be well approximated by a polynomial interpolation formula: $n^z \approx (1/3 - \frac{a}{2} -\frac{b}{4}) m + am^2+bm^3$, with $a \approx 0.288$ and $b\approx -0.306$. We also find that the full spin texture $Φ^z(\vec{r})$ is itself dominated by Fourier modes near the antiferromagnetic wavevector in a universal way. On the analytical side, we explore this question using spin-wave theory, a simple mean field model written in terms of the total spin of each sublattice, and a rotor model for the dynamics of $\vec{n}$. We find that spin-wave theory reproduces this universality of $Φ^z(\vec{r})$ and gives $n^z = (1-α-β/S)m + (α/S)m^2 +{\mathcal O}(S^{-2})$ with $α\approx 0.013$ and $β\approx 1.003$ for spin-$S$ antiferromagnets, while the sublattice-spin mean field theory and the rotor model both give $n^z = 1/3 m$ for $S=1/2$ antiferromagnets. We argue that this latter relationship becomes asymptotically exact in the limit of infinitely long-range {\em unfrustrated} exchange interactions.

Vacancy-induced spin textures and their interactions in a classical spin liquid

Motivated by experiments on the archetypal frustrated magnet SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ (SCGO), we study the classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore slab (Kagomé bilayer) lattice with site-dilution $x=1-p$. This allows us to address generic aspects of the physics of non-magnetic vacancies in a classical spin liquid. We explicitly demonstrate that the pure ($x=0$) system remains a spin-liquid down to the lowest temperatures, with an unusual {\em non-monotonic} temperature dependence of the susceptibility, which even turns diamagnetic for the apical spins between the two kagome layers. For $x> 0$ but small, the low temperature magnetic response of the system is most naturally described in terms of the properties of spatially extended spin textures that cloak an "orphan" $S=3/2$ Cr$^{3+}$ spin in direct proximity to a pair of missing sites belonging to the same triangular simplex. In the $T \rightarrow 0$ limit, these orphan-texture complexes each carry a net magnetization that is exactly half the magnetic moment of an individual spin of the undiluted system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that they interact via an entropic {\em temperature dependent} {\em pair-wise exchange interaction} $J_{eff}(T,\vec{r}) \sim T {\mathcal J} (\vec{r} \sqrt{T})$ that has a logarithmic form at short-distances and decays exponentially beyond a thermal correlation length $ξ(T) \sim 1/\sqrt{T}$. The sign of $J_{eff}$ depends on whether the two orphan spins belong to the same Kagome layer or not. We provide a detailed analytical account of these properties using an effective field theory approach specifically tailored for the problem at hand. These results are in quantitative agreement with large-scale Monte Carlo numerics.

Phase transitions in the distribution of the Andreev conductance of superconductor-metal junctions with multiple transverse modes

We compute analytically the full distribution of Andreev conductance $G_{\mathrm{NS}}$ of a metal-superconductor interface with a large number $N_c$ of transverse modes, using a random matrix approach. The probability distribution $\mathcal{P}(G_{\mathrm{NS}},N_c)$ in the limit of large $N_c$ displays a Gaussian behavior near the average value $<G_{\mathrm{NS}}>= (2-\sqrt{2}) N_c$ and asymmetric power-law tails in the two limits of very small and very large $G_{\mathrm{NS}}$. In addition, we find a novel third regime sandwiched between the central Gaussian peak and the power law tail for large $G_{\mathrm{NS}}$. Weakly non-analytic points separate these four regimes---these are shown to be consequences of three phase transitions in an associated Coulomb gas problem.

Resonating valence bond wavefunctions and classical interacting dimer models

We relate properties of nearest-neighbour resonating valence bond (nnRVB) wavefunctions for $SU(g)$ spin systems on two dimensional bipartite lattices to those of fully-packed classical dimer models with potential energy $V$ on the same lattice. We define a cluster expansion of $V$ in terms of $n$-body potentials $V_n$, which are recursively determined from the nnRVB wavefunction on {\em finite subgraphs} of the original lattice. The magnitude of the $n$-body interaction $V_n$ ($n>1$) is of order ${\mathcal O}(g^{-(n-1)})$ for small $g^{-1}$, while $V_1$ reduces to a constant due to the fully-packed nature of the model. At leading non-trivial order on the square lattice, the interacting dimer model only has two-body interactions $V_2(g)$ that favour two parallel dimers on elementary plaquettes. Setting $g=2$ and using the results of earlier work on this interacting dimer model, we find that the long-distance behaviour of the bond-energy correlation function is dominated by an oscillatory term that decays as $ 1/|\vec{r}|^α$ with $α\approx 1.22$ for SU(2) spins. This result is in remarkable quantitative agreement with earlier direct numerical studies of the corresponding wavefunction, which give $α\approx 1.20$.

Vacancy-induced spin texture in a one dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We study the effect of a missing spin in a one dimensional $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet with nearest neighbour Heisenberg exchange $J$ and six-spin coupling $Q=4qJ$ using Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) and bosonization techniques. For $q< q_c \approx 0.04$, the system is in a quasi-long range ordered power-law antiferromagnetic phase, which gives way to a valence-bond solid state that spontaneously breaks lattice translation symmetry for $q> q_c$. We study the ground state spin texture $Φ(r) = <G_{\uparrow}|S^z(r)|G_{\uparrow}>$ in the the $S^z_{tot}=1/2$ ground state $|G_{\uparrow}>$ of the system with a missing spin, focusing on the alternating part $N_z(r)$. We find that our QMC results for $N_z$ at $q =q_c$ take on the scaling form expected from bosonization considerations, but violate scaling for $q < q_c$. Within the bosonization approach, such violations of scaling arise from the presence of a marginally irrelevant sine-Gordon interaction, whose effects we calculate using renormalization group (RG) improved perturbation theory. Our field-theoretical predictions are found to agree well with the QMC data for $q < q_c$.

Fractional spin textures in the frustrated magnet SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$

We consider the archetypal frustrated antiferromagnet SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ in its well-known spin-liquid state, and demonstrate that a Cr$^{3+}$ spin $S=3/2$ ion in direct proximity to a pair of vacancies (in disordered $p<1$ samples) is cloaked by a spatially extended spin texture that encodes the correlations of the parent spin-liquid. In this spin-liquid regime, the combined object has a magnetic response identical to a classical spin of length $S/2 = 3/4$, which dominates over the small intrinsic susceptibility of the pure system. This fractional-spin texture leaves an unmistakable imprint on the measured $^{71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lineshapes, which we compute using Monte-Carlo simulations and compare with experimental data.

Generalization of the singlet sector valence bond loop algorithm to antiferromagnetic ground states with total spin $S_{tot}=1/2$

We develop a generalization of the singlet sector valence bond basis projection algorithm of Sandvik, Beach, and Evertz (A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 207203 (2005); K. S. D. Beach and A. W. Sandvik, Nucl. Phys. B750, 142 (2006); A. W. Sandvik and H. G. Evertz, arXiv:0807.0682, unpublished.) to cases in which the ground state of an antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian has total spin $S_{tot} = 1/2$ in a finite size system. We explain how various ground state expectation values may be calculated by generalizations of the estimators developed in the singlet case, and illustrate the power of the method by calculating the ground state spin texture and bond energies in a $L \times L$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $L$ odd and free boundaries.

Impurity spin texture at a deconfined quantum critical point

The spin texture surrounding a non-magnetic impurity in a quantum antiferromagnet is a sensitive probe of the novel physics of a class of quantum phase transitions between a Neel ordered phase and a valence bond solid phase in square lattice S=1/2 antiferromagnets. Using a newly developed T=0 Quantum Monte Carlo technique, we compute this spin texture at these transitions and find that it does not obey the universal scaling form expected at a scale invariant quantum critical point. We also identify the precise logarithmic form of these scaling violations. Our results are expected to yield important clues regarding the probable theory of these unconventional transitions.

Impurity spin texture at a Néel-Valence Bond Solid critical point in $d=2$ SU(3) quantum antiferromagnets

We study the impurity physics at a continuous quantum phase transition from an SU(3) symmetric Néel ordered state to a valence bond solid state that breaks lattice symmetries, using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. This continuous transition is expected to be an example of `deconfined criticality' in an SU(3) symmetric system. We find that the spin-texture induced by a missing-spin defect at the transition takes on a finite-size scaling form consistent with expectations from standard scaling arguments at a scale-invariant quantum critical point, albeit with significant subleading power-law finite size corrections that we analyze in detail. Together with recently-found logarithmic violations of scaling at similar continuous transitions in the SU(2) case, our results provide indirect evidence for the existence of operators that become marginal as $N$ is reduced to 2 in the field theoretical description of these deconfined critical points.

Neel to staggered dimer order transition in a generalized honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model

We study a generalized honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic 2-spin exchange, and competing 4-spin interactions which serve to stabilize a staggered dimer state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo numerics, spin wave theory, and bond operator theory, we show that this model undergoes a strong first-order transition between a Neel state and a staggered dimer state upon increasing the strength of the 4-spin interactions. We attribute the strong first order character of this transition to the spinless nature of the core of point-like Z(3) vortices obtained in the staggered dimer state. Unlike in the case of a columnar dimer state, disordering such vortices in the staggered dimer state does not naturally lead to magnetic order, suggesting that, in this model, the dimer and Neel order parameters should be thought of as independent fields as in conventional Landau theory.

Collinear ordering of easy-axis triangular lattice antiferromagnets

Antiferromagnetically coupled moments on the frustrated triangular lattice typically order in a coplanar state at low temperature. Here, we demonstrate that the presence of not-very-large easy axis single ion anisotropy leads to an interesting orientationally ordered collinear state in triangular lattice antiferromagnets with moments $S \ge 3/2$. This ordered state breaks the symmetry of $π/3$ rotations about a lattice site, while leaving intact the translational symmetry of the lattice.

Semiclassical spin liquid state of easy axis Kagome antiferromagnets

Motivated by recent experiments on Nd-langasite, we consider the effect of strong easy axis single-ion anisotropy $D$ on $S > 3/2$ spins interacting with antiferromagnetic exchange $J$ on the Kagome lattice. When $T \ll DS^2$, the collinear low energy states selected by the anisotropy map on to configurations of the classical Kagome lattice Ising antiferromagnet. However, the low temperature limit is quite different from the cooperative Ising paramagnet that obtains classically for $T \ll JS^2$. We find that sub-leading ${\mathcal O}(J^3S/D^2)$ multi-spin interactions arising from the transverse quantum dynamics result in a crossover from an intermediate temperature classical cooperative Ising paramagnet to a semiclassical spin liquid with distinct short-ranged correlations for $T \ll J^3S/D^2$.

Persistent supersolid phase of hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice

We study hard-core bosons with unfrustrated hopping ($t$) and nearest neighbour repulsion ($U$) on the triangular lattice. At half-filling, the system undergoes a zero temperature ($T$) quantum phase transition from a superfluid phase at small $U$ to a supersolid at $U_c \approx 4.45$ in units of $2t$. This supersolid phase breaks the lattice translation symmetry in a characteristic $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ pattern, and is remarkably stable--indeed, a smooth extrapolation of our results indicates that the supersolid phase persists for arbitrarily large $U/t$.

Far from equilibrium dynamics of the Bose gas

We study the approach to equilibrium of a Bose gas to a superfluid state. We point out that dynamic scaling, characteristic of far from equilibrium phase-ordering systems, should hold. We stress the importance of a non-dissipative Josephson precession term in driving the system to a new universality class. A model of coarsening in d=2, involving a quench between two temperatures below the equilibrium superfluid transition temperature (T_c), is exactly solved and demonstrates the relevance of the Josephson term. Numerical results on quenches from above T_c in d=2,3 provide evidence for the scaling picture postulated.
