Testing the tetraquark structure for the $X$ resonances in low-lying region

Assuming four-quark structure for the $X$ resonances in low-lying region, we calculate their masses using the color-spin interaction. In specific, the hyperfine masses of the color-spin interaction are calculated for the possible states in spin-0, spin-1, spin-2 channels. The two states in spin-0 channel as well as the two states in spin-1 channel are diagonalized in order to generate the physical hyperfine masses. By matching the difference in hyperfine masses with the splitting in corresponding hadron masses and using the $X(3872)$ mass as an input, we estimate the masses corresponding to the states $J^{PC}=0^{++}, 1^{+-},2^{++}$. We find the masses of two states in $1^{+-}$ are close to those of $X(3823)$, $X(3900)$, and the mass of the $2^{++}$ state is close to that of $X(3940)$. For them, the discrepancies are about $\sim 10$ MeV. This may suggest that the quantum numbers of the controversial states are $X(3823)=1^{+-}, X(3900)=1^{+-}, X(3940)=2^{++}$. In this work, we use the same inputs parameters, the constituent quark masses and the strength of the color-spin interaction, that have been adopted in the previous work on the $D$ or $B$-meson excited states. There, it was shown that the four-quark structure can be manifested in their excited states. Thus, our results in this work provide a consistent treatment on open- and hidden-charm mesons as far as the four-quark model is concerned.

Constraints on modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity during big bang nucleosynthesis

The modified gravity is considered to be one of possible explanations of the accelerated expansions of the present and the early universe. We study effects of the modified gravity on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). If effects of the modified gravity are significant during the BBN epoch, they should be observed as changes of primordial light element abundances. We assume a $f(G)$ term with the Gauss-Bonnet term $G$, during the BBN epoch. A power-law relation of $df/dG \propto t^p$ where $t$ is the cosmic time was assumed for the function $f(G)$ as an example case. We solve time evolutions of physical variables during BBN in the $f(G)$ gravity model numerically, and analyzed calculated results. It is found that a proper solution for the cosmic expansion rate can be lost in some parameter region. In addition, we show that calculated results of primordial light element abundances can be significantly different from observational data. Especially, observational limits on primordial D abundance leads to the strongest constraint on the $f(G)$ gravity. We then derive constraints on parameters of the $f(G)$ gravity taking into account the existence of the solution of expansion rate and final light element abundances.

Corrected constraints on big bang nucleosynthesis in a modified gravity model of $f(R) \propto R^n$

Big bang nucleosynthesis in a modified gravity model of $f(R)\propto R^n$ is investigated. The only free parameter of the model is a power-law index $n$. We find cosmological solutions in a parameter region of $1< n \leq (4+\sqrt{6})/5$. We calculate abundances of $^4$He, D, $^3$He, $^7$Li, and $^6$Li during big bang nucleosynthesis. We compare the results with the latest observational data. It is then found that the power-law index is constrained to be $(n-1)=(-0.86\pm 1.19)\times 10^{-4}$ (95 % C.L.) mainly from observations of deuterium abundance as well as $^4$He abundance.

FACT -- The G-APD revolution in Cherenkov astronomy

Since two years, the FACT telescope is operating on the Canary Island of La Palma. Apart from its purpose to serve as a monitoring facility for the brightest TeV blazars, it was built as a major step to establish solid state photon counters as detectors in Cherenkov astronomy. The camera of the First G-APD Cherenkov Telesope comprises 1440 Geiger-mode avalanche photo diodes (G-APD), equipped with solid light guides to increase the effective light collection area of each sensor. Since no sense-line is available, a special challenge is to keep the applied voltage stable although the current drawn by the G-APD depends on the flux of night-sky background photons significantly varying with ambient light conditions. Methods have been developed to keep the temperature and voltage dependent response of the G-APDs stable during operation. As a cross-check, dark count spectra with high statistics have been taken under different environmental conditions. In this presentation, the project, the developed methods and the experience from two years of operation of the first G-APD based camera in Cherenkov astronomy under changing environmental conditions will be presented.

General limit on the relation between abundances of D and $^7$Li in big bang nucleosynthesis with nucleon injections

The injections of energetic hadrons could have occurred in the early universe by decays of hypothetical long-lived exotic particles. The injections induce the showers of nonthermal hadrons via nuclear scattering. Neutrons generated at these events can react with $^7$Be nuclei and reduce $^7$Be abundance solving a problem of the primordial $^7$Li abundance. We suggest that thermal neutron injection is a way to derive a model independent conservative limit on the relation between abundances of D and $^7$Li in a hadronic energy injection model. We emphasize that an uncertainty in cross sections of inelastic $n+p$ scattering affects the total number of induced neutrons, which determines final abundances of D and $^7$Li. In addition, the annihilations of antinucleons with $^4$He result in higher D abundance and trigger nonthermal $^6$Li production. It is concluded that a reduction of $^7$Li abundance from a value in the standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model down to an observational two $σ$ upper limit is necessarily accompanied by an undesirable increase of D abundance up to at least an observational 12 $σ$ upper limit from observations of quasi-stellar object absorption line systems. The effects of antinucleons and secondary particles produced in the hadronic showers always lead to a severer constraint. The BBN models involving any injections of extra neutrons are thus unlikely to reproduce a small $^7$Li abundance consistent with observations.

Is the molecular Berry phase an artifact of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation?

We demonstrate that the molecular Berry phase and the corresponding non-analyticity in the electronic Born-Oppenheimer wavefunction is, in general, not a true topological feature of the exact solution of the full electron-nuclear Schrödinger equation. For a numerically exactly solvable model we show that a non-analyticity, and the associated geometric phase, only appear in the limit of infinite nuclear mass, while a perfectly smooth behavior is found for any finite nuclear mass.

Revised Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with long-lived negatively charged massive particles: updated recombination rates, primordial 9Be nucleosynthesis, and impact of new 6Li limits

We extensively reanalyze effects of a long-lived negatively charged massive particle, X-, on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The BBN model with an X- particle was originally motivated by the discrepancy between 6,7Li abundances predicted in standard BBN model and those inferred from observations of metal-poor stars. In this model 7Be is destroyed via the recombination with an X- particle followed by radiative proton capture. We calculate precise rates for the radiative recombinations of 7Be, 7Li, 9Be, and 4He with X-. In nonresonant rates we take into account respective partial waves of scattering states and respective bound states. The finite sizes of nuclear charge distributions cause deviations in wave functions from those of point-charge nuclei. For a heavy X- mass, m_X \gtrsim 100 GeV, the d-wave --> 2P transition is most important for 7Li and 7,9Be, unlike recombination with electrons. Our new nonresonant rate of the 7Be recombination for m_X=1000 GeV is more than 6 times larger than the existing rate. Moreover, we suggest a new important reaction for 9Be production: the recombination of 7Li and X- followed by deuteron capture. We derive binding energies of X-nuclei along with reaction rates and Q-values. We then calculate BBN and find that the amount of 7Be destruction depends significantly on the charge distribution of 7Be. Finally, updated constraints on the initial abundance and the lifetime of the X- are derived in the context of revised upper limits to the primordial 6Li abundance. Parameter regions for the solution to the 7Li problem are revised, and the primordial 9Be abundances is revised.

Statistical Mechanics Model for the Dynamics of Collective Epigenetic Histone Modification

Epigenetic histone modifications play an important role in the maintenance of different cell phenotypes. The exact molecular mechanism for inheritance of the modification patterns over cell generations remains elusive. We construct a Potts-type model based on experimentally observed nearest-neighbor enzyme lateral interactions and nucleosome covalent modification state biased enzyme recruitment. The model can lead to effective nonlocal interactions among nucleosomes suggested in previous theoretical studies, and epigenetic memory is robustly inheritable against stochastic cellular processes.

7Be charge exchange between 7Be3+ ion and exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle in big bang nucleosynthesis

The existence of an exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle, i.e., X-, during big bang nucleosynthesis can affect primordial light element abundances. Especially, the final abundance of 7Li, mainly originating from the electron capture of 7Be, has been suggested to reduce by the 7Be destruction via the radiative X- capture of 7Be followed by the radiative proton capture of the bound state of 7Be and X- (7BeX). We suggest a new route of 7BeX formation, that is the 7Be charge exchange at the reaction of 7Be3+ ion and X-. The formation rate depends on the number fraction of 7Be3+ ion, the charge exchange cross section of 7Be3+, and the probability that produced excited states 7BeX* are converted to the ground state. We estimate respective quantities affecting the 7BeX formation rate, and find that this reaction pathway can be more important than ordinary radiative recombination of 7Be and X-. The effect of the charge exchange reaction is then shown in a latest nuclear reaction network calculation. Quantum physical model calculations for related reactions are needed to precisely estimate the efficiency of this pathway in future.

Asymmetry in the neutrino and anti-neutrino reactions in a nuclear medium

We study the effect of the density-dependent axial and vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($ν_e$) and anti-neutrino $({\bar ν}_e)$ reactions for a nucleon in nuclear matter or in $^{12}$C. The nucleon form factors in free space are presumed to be modified for a bound nucleon in a nuclear medium. We adopt the density-dependent form factors calculated by the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν}_e$ induced reactions with the initial energy $E = $ 8 $\sim$ 80 MeV. We find that the total $ν_e$ cross sections on $^{12}$C as well as a nucleon in nuclear matter are reduced by about 5% at the nuclear saturation density, $ρ_0$. This reduction is caused by the modification of the nucleon structure in matter. Although the density effect for both cases is relatively small, it is comparable with the effect of Coulomb distortion on the outgoing lepton in the $ν$-reaction. In contrast, the density effect on the ${\bar ν}_e$ reaction reduces the cross section significantly in both nuclear matter and $^{12}$C cases, and the amount maximally becomes of about 35% around $ρ_0$. Such large asymmetry in the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν}_e$ cross sections, which seems to be nearly independent of the target, is originated from the difference in the helicities of ${\bar ν}_e$ and $ν_e$. It is expected that the asymmetry influences the r-process and also the neutrino-process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae.

Effects of the density-dependent weak form factors on the neutrino reaction via neutral current for the nucleon in nuclear medium and $^{12}$C

The nucleon form factors in free space are usually thought to be modified when a nucleon is bound in a nucleus or immersed in a nuclear medium. We investigate effects of the density-dependent axial and weak-vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($ν_e$) and anti-electro-neutrino $({\bar ν_e})$ reactions via neutral current (NC) for a nucleon in nuclear medium or $^{12}$C. For the density-dependent form factors, we exploit the quark-meson-coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν_e}$ induced reactions by NC. About 12% decrease of the total cross section by $ν_e$ reaction on the nucleon is obtained at normal density, $ρ= ρ_0 \sim 0.15 {fm}^{-3} $, as well as about 18% reduction of total $ν_e$ cross section on $^{12}$C, by the modification of the weak form factors of the bound nucleon. However, similarly to the charged current reaction, effects of the nucleon property change in the ${\bar ν}_e$ reaction reduce significantly the cross sections about 30% for the nucleon in matter and $^{12}$C cases. Such a large asymmetry in the ${\bar ν}_e$ cross sections is addressed to originate from the different helicities of ${\bar ν}_e$ and $ν_e$.

Electronic Instability in a Zero-Gap Semiconductor: the Charge-Density Wave in (TaSe4)2I

We report a comprehensive study of the paradigmatic quasi-1D compound (TaSe4)2I performed by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find it to be a zero-gap semiconductor in the non-distorted structure, with non-negligible interchain coupling. Theory and experiment support a Peierls-like scenario for the CDW formation below T_CDW = 263 K, where the incommensurability is a direct consequence of the finite interchain coupling. The formation of small polarons, strongly suggested by the ARPES data, explains the puzzling semiconductor-to-semiconductor transition observed in transport at T_CDW.

High-lying Gamow-Teller excited states in the deformed nuclei, $^{76}\textrm{Ge}$ and $^{82}\textrm{Se}$, by the smearing of the Fermi surface in Deformed Quasi-particle RPA (DQRPA)

With the advent of high analysis technology in detecting the Gamow-Teller (GT) excited states beyond one nucleon emission threshold, the quenching of the GT strength to the Ikeda sum rule seems to be recovered by the high-lying GT states. Moreover, in some nuclei, the stronger GT peaks than any other peaks appear explicitly in the high-lying excited states. We address that these high-lying GT excited states stems from the smearing of the Fermi surface by the increase of the chemical potential owing to the deformation within a framework of the deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation (DQRPA). Detailed mechanism leading to the smearing is discussed, and comparisons to the available experimental data are shown to explain the strong peaks on the high-lying GT excited states in a satisfactory manner.

Kinematics of a cascade decay for the precision measurement of $^{29}{\rm Si}$ binding energy

Comparison of a Penning trap and a flat-crystal spectrometer experiments gives a direct test of $E=mc^2$. The result is $1-Δmc^2/E =(-1.4 \pm 4.4) \times 10^{-7}$ for $^{29}{\rm Si}$ and $^{33}{\rm S}$. The dominant uncertainty is on the $γ$-ray measurement in neutron capture reactions, and the secondary $γ$-ray has the uncertainty 4.0 eV for $^{29}{\rm Si}$. We calculated the Doppler effect of the secondary $γ$-ray as $-646.9 \cos θ$ eV from the relativistic energy momentum relation of the $^{28}{\rm Si}(n,γ)^{29}{\rm Si}$ reaction. This corresponds to the full wave of half maximum of 431.3 eV. The error 4.0 eV comes mainly from the Bragg angle measurement between the centroids of the linewidths which means that only the most probable part of the whole data has been considered. It is necessary to confirm the assumption of the isotropy for the object to measure. We discussed a coincidence measurement as one of the methods to overcome the assumption.

Nonlinear Force-Free Extrapolation of the Coronal Magnetic Field Based on the MHD Relaxation Method

We develop a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation code based on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) relaxation method. We extend the classical MHD relaxation method in two important ways. First, we introduce an algorithm initially proposed by cite{2002JCoPh.175..645D} to effectively clean the numerical errors associated with $nabla cdot vec{B}$. Second, the multi-grid type method is implemented in our NLFFF to perform direct analysis of the high-resolution magnetogram data. As a result of these two implementations, we successfully extrapolated the high resolution force-free field introduced by cite{1990ApJ...352..343L} with better accuracy in a drastically shorter time. We also applied our extrapolation method to the MHD solution obtained from the flux-emergence simulation by cite{2012ApJ...748...53M}. We found that NLFFF extrapolation may be less effective for reproducing areas higher than a half-domain, where some magnetic loops are found in a state of continuous upward expansion. However, an inverse S shaped structure consisting of the sheared and twisted loops formed in the lower region can be captured well through our NLFFF extrapolation method. We further discuss how well these sheared and twisted fields are reconstructed by estimating the magnetic topology and twist quantitatively.

The electronic structure of the high-symmetry perovskite iridate Ba2IrO4

We report angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements, density functional and model tight-binding calculations on Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ (Ba-214), an antiferromagnetic ($T_N=230$ K) insulator. Ba-214 does not exhibit the rotational distortion of the IrO$_6$ octahedra that is present in its sister compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ (Sr-214), and is therefore an attractive reference material to study the electronic structure of layered iridates. We find that the band structures of Ba-214 and Sr-214 are qualitatively similar, hinting at the predominant role of the spin-orbit interaction in these materials. Temperature-dependent ARPES data show that the energy gap persists well above $T_N$, and favour a Mott over a Slater scenario for this compound.

Tunable polaronic conduction in anatase TiO2

Oxygen vacancies created in anatase TiO2 by UV photons (80 - 130 eV) provide an effective electron-doping mechanism and induce a hitherto unobserved dispersive metallic state. Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) reveals that the quasiparticles are large polarons. These results indicate that anatase can be tuned from an insulator to a polaron gas to a weakly correlated metal as a function of doping and clarify the nature of conductivity in this material.

Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering and Fusion Cross Section Data for the 9Be+28Si, 144Sm, and 208Pb Systems at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies using Double Folding Potential

Based on the extended optical model with the double folding potential, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed of elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{28}$Si, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb systems at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. We find that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is systematically repulsive for all the targets considered, which is consistent with the results deduced from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations taking into account the polarization effects due to breakup. Further, it is found that both DR and fusion parts of the extracted polarization potentials satisfy the dispersion relation.

Medium effects of magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields

We investigate medium effects due to density-dependent magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields. If we allow the variation of anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of baryons in dense matter under strong magnetic fields, AMMs of nucleons are enhanced to be larger than those of hyperons. The enhancement naturally affects the chemical potentials of baryons to be large and leads to the increase of a proton fraction. Consequently, it causes the suppression of hyperons, resulting in the stiffness of the equation of state. Under the presumed strong magnetic fields, we evaluate relevant particles' population, the equation of state and the maximum masses of neutron stars by including density-dependent AMMs and compare them with those obtained from AMMs in free space.

Neutrino reactions via neutral and charged current by Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation(QRPA)

We developed the quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) for the neutrino scattering off even-even nuclei via neutral current (NC) and charged cur- rent (CC). The QRPA has been successfully applied for the βand ββdecay of relevant nuclei. To describe neutrino scattering, general multipole transitions by weak interactions with a finite momentum transfer are calculated for NC and CC reaction with detailed formalism. Since we consider neutron-proton (np) pairing as well as neutron-neutron (nn) and proton-proton (pp) pairing correlations, the nn + pp QRPA and np QRPA are combined in a framework, which enables to describe both NC and CC reactions in a consistent way. Numerical results for ν-^{12}C, -^{56}Fe and -^{56}Ni reactions are shown to comply with other theoretical calculations and reproduce well available experimental data.

Ab Initio Study of Different Acid Molecules Interacting with H2O

Using the Gaussian-03 for ab initio calculations, we have studied interaction of different acid molecules with a single water molecule. The molecular and supermolecular optimized structures were found with the Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP-hybrid potential) calculations of density-functional theory (DFT) methods as well as the Moeller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory, using the basis set of Aug-cc-pVDZ quality and the CRENBL ECP effective core potential for molecules containing heavy iodine atom. Possible isomers of studied acids and supermolecules, consisting of acid molecules coupled with a single water molecule, are shown. Energies, zero-point energies (ZPEs), thermal enthalpies and free energies, as well as the corresponding binding energies for the theoretical methods were calculated. It was found that optimized structures of supermolecular isomers with lowest energies corresponding to the global minimum on the potential energy surfaces can be different for both theories. The simplest structure acids H2S and H2Se, forming acid-water supermolecules, can give clear evidence of disagreement of the two theoretical methods concerning optimization of lowest energy structures, because the B3LYP-DFT method gives the lowest-energy structure for the first supermolecular isomer, but the MP2 method for the second possible isomer. A dramatic difference between potential energy surfaces for both theories applying to the optimized structure finding of the H2SO3-H2O supermolecular isomers was found, because MP2 supermolecular geometries cannot exist for the corresponding B3LYP-DFT ones, for which the frequency characteristics of the supermolecular isomers were also calculated. In general, the binding energies and ZPE ones for the MP2 method are 10-15% larger than those for the B3LYP-DFT method.

Signals for strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering in quasi-elastic region

Strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering are investigated on the elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and the neutrino-nucleus scattering for 12C target in the quasi-elastic region on the incident energy of 500 MeV, within the framework of a relativistic single particle model. For the neutrino-nucleus scattering, the effects of final state interaction for the knocked-out nucleon are included by a relativistic optical potential. In the cross sections we found some cancellations of the strange quark contributions between the knocked-out protons and neutrons. Consequently, the asymmetries between the incident neutrino and antineutrino which is the ratio of neutral current to charged current, and the difference between the asymmetries are shown to be able to yield more feasible quantities for the strangeness effects. In order to explicitly display importance of the cancellations, results of the exclusive reaction 16O(ν, ν' p) are additionally presented for detecting the strangeness effects.
