The $ν$ EYE Neutrino Telescope: Conceptual Design Report

The {$\bfνEYE$} (``new eye'', Neutrino Experiment at YEmilab, \href{https://sites.google.com/korea.ac.kr/the-nueye-telescope} {\tt nuEYE.korea.ac.kr}) neutrino project leverages the existing large pit at Yemilab located in South Korea, to reveal the existence of sterile neutrino, the up-turn of the neutrinos from the Sun, and the first minimum of the neutrino oscillation over distances on the order of tens of kilometers for the first time. This initiative is expected to facilitate a wide range of significant scientific and technological advancements within both South Korean and international communities engaged in neutrino science and technology. The {$\bfνEYE$} aims to investigate the largely unexplored sector of almost-massless lepton in the elementary particle physics in detail. The emphasis will be placed on the study of real time nuclear processes and reactions involving possible sterile neutrinos on timescales down to nanoseconds in ultra-high intense or radioactive neutrino beams for the first time in the world; the {$\bfνEYE$} looks at to-be universal oscillation (``up-turn'' in the electron neutrino survival probability) of neutrinos predicted by the three neutrino oscillation paradigm. This will confirm or deny our current understanding on the particle interactions of the lepton sector; and measurement of the first oscillation minimum between the first and second neutrinos in mass.

An exact solution of the higher-order gravity in standard radiation-dominated era

We report that the standard evolution of radiation-dominated era (RDE) universe $a \propto t^{1/2}$ is a sufficient condition for solving a sixth order gravitational field equation derived from the Lagrangian containing $B R^{ab}R_{ab} + C R {R^{;c}}_{c}$ as well as a polynomial $f(R)$ for a spatially flat radiation FLRW universe. By virtue of the similarity between $R^{ab}R_{ab}$ and $R^2$ models up to the background order and of the vanishing property of ${R^{;c}}_{c}$ for $ H = 1/(2t)$, the analytical solution can be obtained from a special case to general one. This proves that the standard cosmic evolution is valid even within modified gravitational theory involving higher-order terms. An application of this background solution to the tensor-type perturbation reduces the complicated equation to the standard second order equation of gravitational wave. We discuss the possible ways to discriminate the modified gravity model on the observations such as the gravitational wave from the disturbed universe and primordial abundances.

Asymmetric nuclear matter in relativistic mean-field models with isoscalar- and isovector-meson mixing

Using the relativistic mean-field model with nonlinear couplings between the isoscalar and isovector mesons, we study the properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. Not only the vector mixing, $ω_μω^μ\mathbfρ_ν\mathbfρ^ν$, but also the quartic interaction due to the scalar mesons, $σ^{2}\mathbfδ^{2}$, is taken into account to investigate the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, $E_{\rm sym}$, and the neutron-star properties. It is found that the $δ$ meson increases $E_{\rm sym}$ at high densities, whereas the $σ$-$δ$ mixing makes $E_{\rm sym}$ soft above the saturation density. Furthermore, the $δ$ meson and its mixing have a large influence on the radius and tidal deformability of a neutron star. In particular, the $σ$-$δ$ mixing reduces the neutron-star radius, and, thus, the present calculation can simultaneously reproduce the dimensionless tidal deformabilities of a canonical $1.4M_{\odot}$ neutron star observed from the binary neutron star merger, GW170817, and from the compact binary coalescence, GW190814.

Effects of Many-body Interactions in Hypernuclei with Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU Functionals

We investigate the properties of $Λ$ hyperon in $Λ$-hypernuclei using an effective nuclear density functional theory which is based on the low-energy effective field theory. It expands the energy density in the power of Fermi momentum, and consequently has multiple density dependence for the effective many-body interactions. Starting from the effective density functional for nucleons, we determine the parameters for the two- and many-body $Λ$-$N$ interactions added to the nucleon energy density functional by fitting to $Λ$-hypernuclear data. The experimental data consist of the energy levels of a $Λ$ hyperon in the $p$-, and $d$-states as well as $s$-state of $Λ$-hypernuclei in the mass range from $_Λ^{16}$O to $_Λ^{208}$Pb. The results turn out to properly explain the data relevant to hypernuclei owing to the effective many-body interaction apart from a few data in light hypernuclei. This hyperon functional is applied to study the $Λ$ hyperon binding energy of the neutron-rich $^{124-136}_Λ$Sn isotopes which are under consideration for the measurement at J-PARC. Our results are shown to be insensitive to the density dependence of symmetry energy. We also examine the nuclear matter including $Λ$ hyperon. We note that the hyperon threshold density depends on the nuclear matter properties.

Massive neutron stars with small radii in relativistic mean-field models optimized to nuclear ground states

We present an equation of state (EoS) for neutron stars using the relativistic mean-field model with isoscalar- and isovector-meson mixing. Taking into account the results of the neutron skin thickness, $R_{\rm skin}$, of $^{208}$Pb reported by the PREX collaboration, the dimensionless tidal deformability of a canonical neutron star observed from GW170817, and a $2.6$ $M_{\odot}$ compact star implied by the secondary component of GW190814, a new effective interaction is constructed so as to reproduce the saturation condition of nuclear matter and the ground-state properties of finite, closed-shell nuclei. We find that the neutron star EoS exhibits the rapid stiffening around twice the nuclear saturation density, which is caused by the soft nuclear symmetry energy, $E_{\rm sym}$. It is also noticeable that the thick $R_{\rm skin}$ from the PREX-2 experiment can be achieved with the small slope parameter of $E_{\rm sym}$ stemming from the isoscalar-meson mixing. Thus, we speculate that the secondary component of GW190814 is the heaviest neutron star ever discovered.

Nuclear mass table in deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum: I. even-even nuclei

Ground-state properties of even-even nuclei with $8\le Z\le120$ from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line have been investigated using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) with the density functional PC-PK1. With the effects of deformation and continuum included simultaneously, 2583 even-even nuclei are predicted to be bound. The calculated binding energies, two-nucleon separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, quadrupole deformations, and neutron and proton Fermi surfaces are tabulated and compared with available experimental data. The rms deviation from the 637 mass data is 1.518 MeV, providing one of the best microscopic descriptions for nuclear masses. The drip lines obtained from DRHBc calculations are compared with other calculations, including the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) and triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (TRHB) calculations with PC-PK1. The deformation and continuum effects on the limits of the nuclear landscape are discussed. Possible peninsulas consisting of bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line are predicted. The systematics of the two-nucleon separation energies, two-nucleon gaps, rms radii, quadrupole deformations, potential energy curves, neutron densities, neutron mean-field potentials, and pairing energies in the DRHBc calculations are also discussed. In addition, the $α$ decay energies extracted are in good agreement with available data.

Impact of hypernova νp-process nucleosynthesis on the galactic chemical evolution of Mo and Ru

We calculate Galactic Chemical Evolution (GCE) of Mo and Ru by taking into account the contribution from $νp$-process nucleosynthesis. We estimate yields of $p$-nuclei such as $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ through the $νp$-process in various supernova (SN) progenitors based upon recent models. In particular, the $νp$-process in energetic hypernovae produces a large amount of $p$-nuclei compared to the yield in ordinary core-collapse SNe. Because of this the abundances of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ in the Galaxy are significantly enhanced at [Fe/H]=0 by the $νp$-process. We find that the $νp$-process in hypernovae is the main contributor to the elemental abundance of $^{92}$Mo at low metallicity [Fe/H$]<-2$. Our theoretical prediction of the elemental abundances in metal-poor stars becomes more consistent with observational data when the $νp$-process in hypernovae is taken into account.

Shape coexistence and neutron skin thickness of Pb isotopes by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum

We investigate ground states properties of Pb isotopes located between neutron and proton drip-lines estimated by two-neutron (two-proton) separation energies and Fermi energies within the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc). First, we report some candidates of nuclear shape coexistence in the isotope chain. They are accessed by calculating total energy as a function of the deformation parameter $β_2$, and for the coexistence candidates we take a couple of the deformation region bringing about minima of the energy within energy difference $ΔE < $ 1 MeV. Second, the Pb isotopes near neutron drip-lines are also investigated and compared to the results by other nuclear mass models. We find out eleven neutron emitters, $^{278 - 296, 300}$Pb, giving rise to the Pb peninsular near the neutron drip-line. Finally, by exploiting the neutron and proton density we deduce the neutron skin thickness (NST) of the Pb isotopes and compare to the available experimental data. The recent data regarding the shape coexistence of $^{184,186,188}$Pb and the NST of $^{208}$Pb are shown to be well matched with the present results.

Deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with point coupling functional: examples of even-even Nd isotopes

The aim of this work is to develop the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) theory based on the point-coupling density functionals and extend it to provide a unified description for all even-even nuclei in the nuclear chart by overcoming all possible challenges. The nuclear superfluidity is considered via Bogoliubov transformation. Densities and potentials are expanded in terms of Legendre polynomials to include the axial deformation degrees of freedom. Sophisticated relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations in coordinate space are solved in the DiracWoods-Saxon basis to consider the continuum effects. Numerical checks are performed from light nuclei to heavy nuclei. The techniques to construct the DRHBc mass table for even-even nuclei are explored. The DRHBc theory is extended to study heavier nuclei beyond magnesium isotopes. Taking Nd isotopes as examples, the experimental binding energies, two-neutron separation energies, quadrupole deformations, and charge radii are reproduced rather well. The deformation and continuum play essential roles in the description of nuclear masses and prediction of drip-line nuclei. By examining the single-particle levels in the canonical basis and their contributions to the total density, the thickness of the neutron skin, the particles number in continuum, and the Coulomb barrier, the exotic structures including the neutron skin and the proton radioactivity are predicted.

ν\barν -Pair Synchrotron Emission in Neutron-Star Matter based on a Relativistic Quantum Approach

We study the neutrino anti-neutrino pair synchrotron emission from electrons and protons in a relativistic quantum approach. This process occurs only under a strong magnetic field, and it is considered to be one of effective processes for neutron star cooling. In this work we calculate the luminosity of the neutrino anti-neutrino pairs emitted from neutron-star-matter with a magnetic field of about 10^{15} G. We find that the energy loss is much larger than that of the modified Urca process. The neutrino anti-neutrino pair emission processes in strong magnetic fields is expected to contribute significantly to the cooling of the magnetars.

The viability of the 3+1 neutrino model in the supernova neutrino process

Adopting the 3+1 neutrino mixing parameters by the IceCube and shortbase line experiments, we investigate the sterile-active neutrino oscillation effects on the supernova neutrino process. For the sterile neutrino ($ν_s$), we study two different luminosity models. First, we presume that the $ν_s$ does not interact with other particles through the standard interactions apart from the oscillation with the active neutrinos. Second, we consider that $ν_s$ can be directly produced by $ν_e$ scattering with matter. In both cases, we find that the pattern of neutrino oscillations can be changed drastically by the $ν_s$ in supernova environments. Especially multiple resonances occur, and consequently affect thermal neutrino-induced reaction rates. As a result, $^7$Li, $^7$Be, $^{11}$B, $^{11}$C, $^{92}$Nb, $^{98}$Tc and $^{138}$La yields in the $ν$-process are changed. Among those nuclei, $^7$Li and $^{11}$B yields can be constrained by the analysis of observed SiC X grains. Based on the meteoritic data, we conclude that the second model can be allowed while first model is excluded. The viability of the second model depends on the sterile neutrino temperature and the neutrino mass hierarchy.

Competition of deformation and neutron-proton pairing in Gamow-Teller transitions for $^{56, 58}$Ni and $^{62,64}$Ni

We investigated effects of neutron-proton ($np$) pairing correlations comprising isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) component on Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions of $^{56, 58,62,64}$Ni by taking into account nuclear deformation in a deformed Woods-Saxon mean field. Our GT calculations based on a deformed Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (DBCS) approach have been performed within a deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation (DQRPA) which explicitly includes the deformation as well as all kinds of pairing correlations not only at the DBCS but also at the DQRPA stage. Competition of these two effects, the deformation and the IS spin-triplet and IV spin-singlet component of the $np$ pairing, is shown to be significant for understanding the GT strength distributions of Ni isotopes.

A new neutrino source for the study of the solar neutrino physics in the vacuum-matter transition region

Production of a neutrino source through proton induced reaction is studied by using the particle transport code, GEANT4. Unstable isotope such as $^{27}$Si can be produced when $^{27}$Al target is bombarded by 15 MeV energetic proton beams. Through the beta decay process of the unstable isotope, a new electron-neutrino source in the 1.0 $\sim$ 5.0 MeV energy range is obtained. Proton induced reactions are simulated with JENDL High Energy File 2007 (JENDL/HE-2007) data and other nuclear data. For radioactive decay processes, we use "G4RadioactiveDecay" model based on the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF). We suggest target systems required for future's solar neutrino experiments, in particular, for the vacuum-matter transition region. As for the detection system of the new neutrino source, we evaluate reaction rates for available radiochemical detectors and LENA type scintillator detector. Possibility of detecting sterile neutrinos is also discussed.

Pion Production via Proton Synchrotron Radiation in Strong Magnetic Fields in Relativistic Field Theory: Scaling Relations and Angular Distributions

We study pion production by proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of a strong magnetic field when the Landau numbers of the initial and final protons are $n_{i,f} \sim 10^4 - 10^5$. We find in our relativistic field theory calculations that the pion decay width depends only on the field strength parameter which previously was only conjectured based upon semi-classical arguments. Moreover, we also find new results that the decay width satisfies a robust scaling relation, and that the polar angular distribution of emitted pion momenta is very narrow and can be easily obtained. This scaling implies that one can infer the decay width in more realistic magnetic fields of $10^{15}$G, where $n_{i,f} \sim 10^{12} - 10^{13}$, from the results for $n_{i,f} \sim 10^4 - 10^5$. The resultant pion intensity and angular distributions for realistic magnetic field strengths are presented and their physical implications discussed.

Testing the tetraquark structure for the $X$ resonances in low-lying region

Assuming four-quark structure for the $X$ resonances in low-lying region, we calculate their masses using the color-spin interaction. In specific, the hyperfine masses of the color-spin interaction are calculated for the possible states in spin-0, spin-1, spin-2 channels. The two states in spin-0 channel as well as the two states in spin-1 channel are diagonalized in order to generate the physical hyperfine masses. By matching the difference in hyperfine masses with the splitting in corresponding hadron masses and using the $X(3872)$ mass as an input, we estimate the masses corresponding to the states $J^{PC}=0^{++}, 1^{+-},2^{++}$. We find the masses of two states in $1^{+-}$ are close to those of $X(3823)$, $X(3900)$, and the mass of the $2^{++}$ state is close to that of $X(3940)$. For them, the discrepancies are about $\sim 10$ MeV. This may suggest that the quantum numbers of the controversial states are $X(3823)=1^{+-}, X(3900)=1^{+-}, X(3940)=2^{++}$. In this work, we use the same inputs parameters, the constituent quark masses and the strength of the color-spin interaction, that have been adopted in the previous work on the $D$ or $B$-meson excited states. There, it was shown that the four-quark structure can be manifested in their excited states. Thus, our results in this work provide a consistent treatment on open- and hidden-charm mesons as far as the four-quark model is concerned.

Constraints on modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity during big bang nucleosynthesis

The modified gravity is considered to be one of possible explanations of the accelerated expansions of the present and the early universe. We study effects of the modified gravity on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). If effects of the modified gravity are significant during the BBN epoch, they should be observed as changes of primordial light element abundances. We assume a $f(G)$ term with the Gauss-Bonnet term $G$, during the BBN epoch. A power-law relation of $df/dG \propto t^p$ where $t$ is the cosmic time was assumed for the function $f(G)$ as an example case. We solve time evolutions of physical variables during BBN in the $f(G)$ gravity model numerically, and analyzed calculated results. It is found that a proper solution for the cosmic expansion rate can be lost in some parameter region. In addition, we show that calculated results of primordial light element abundances can be significantly different from observational data. Especially, observational limits on primordial D abundance leads to the strongest constraint on the $f(G)$ gravity. We then derive constraints on parameters of the $f(G)$ gravity taking into account the existence of the solution of expansion rate and final light element abundances.

Corrected constraints on big bang nucleosynthesis in a modified gravity model of $f(R) \propto R^n$

Big bang nucleosynthesis in a modified gravity model of $f(R)\propto R^n$ is investigated. The only free parameter of the model is a power-law index $n$. We find cosmological solutions in a parameter region of $1< n \leq (4+\sqrt{6})/5$. We calculate abundances of $^4$He, D, $^3$He, $^7$Li, and $^6$Li during big bang nucleosynthesis. We compare the results with the latest observational data. It is then found that the power-law index is constrained to be $(n-1)=(-0.86\pm 1.19)\times 10^{-4}$ (95 % C.L.) mainly from observations of deuterium abundance as well as $^4$He abundance.

Equation of state for neutron stars with hyperons and quarks in relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation

We construct the equation of state (EoS) for neutron stars explicitly including hyperons and quarks. Using the quark-meson coupling model with relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation, the EoS for hadronic matter is derived by taking into account the strange ($σ^{\ast}$ and $ϕ$) mesons as well as the light non-strange ($σ$, $ω$, $\vecπ$ and $\vecρ$) mesons. Relevant coupling constants are determined to reproduce the experimental data of nuclear matter and hypernuclei in SU(3) flavor symmetry. For quark matter, we employ the MIT bag model with one-gluon-exchange interaction, and Gibbs criteria for chemical equilibrium in the phase transition from hadrons to quarks. We find that the strange vector ($ϕ$) meson and the Fock contribution make the hadronic EoS stiff, and that the maximum mass of a neutron star can be consistent with the observed mass of heavy neutron stars even if the coexistence of hadrons and quarks takes place in the core. However, in the present calculation the transition to pure quark matter does not occur in stable neutron stars. Furthermore, the lower bound of the critical chemical potential of the quark-hadron transition at zero temperature turns out to be around 1.5 GeV in order to be consistent with the recent observed neutron star data.

Quantum Field Theoretic Treatment of Pion Production via Proton Synchrotron Radiation in Strong Magnetic Fields: Effects of Landau Levels

We study pion production from proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We derive the exact proton propagator from the Dirac equation in a strong magnetic field by explicitly including the anomalous magnetic moment. In this exact quantum-field approach the magnitude of pion synchrotron emission turns out to be much smaller than that obtained in the semi-classical approach. However, we also find that the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton greatly enhances the production rate about by two order magnitude.

Asymmetric Neutrino Production in Strongly Magnetized Proto-Neutron Stars

We calculate the neutrino production cross-section through the direct URCA process in proto-neutron star matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We assume isoentropic conditions and introduce a new equation of state parameter-set in the relativistic mean-field approach that can reproduce neutron stars with $M > 1.96$ M$_\odot$ as required by observations. We find that the production process increases the flux of emitted neutrinos along the direction parallel to the magnetic field and decreases the flux in the opposite direction. This means that the neutrino flux asymmetry due to the neutrino absorption and scattering processes in a magnetic field becomes larger by the inclusion of the neutrino production process.

Cosmological solutions to the Lithium problem: Big-bang nucleosynthesis with photon cooling, $X$-particle decay and a primordial magnetic field

The $^7$Li abundance calculated in BBN with the baryon-to-photon ratio fixed from fits to the CMB power spectrum is inconsistent with the observed lithium abundances on the surface of metal-poor halo stars. Previous cosmological solutions proposed to resolve this $^7$Li problem include photon cooling (possibly via the Bose-Einstein condensation of a scalar particle) or the decay of a long-lived $X-$particle (possibly the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle). In this paper we reanalyze these solutions, both separately and in concert. We also introduce the possibility of a primordial magnetic field (PMF) into these models. We constrain the $X-$particles and the PMF parameters by the observed light element abundances using a likelihood analysis to show that the inclusion of all three possibilities leads to an optimum solution to the lithium problem. We deduce allowed ranges for the $X-$particle parameters and energy density in the PMF that can solve $^7$Li problem.

Four-quark structure of the excited states of heavy mesons

We propose a four-quark structure for some of the excited states of heavy mesons containing a single charm or bottom quark. The four-quark wave functions are constructed based on a diquark-antidiquark form under the constraint that they form an antitriplet $\bar{\bf{3}}_f$ in $\mbox{SU(3)}_f$, which seems to be realized in some of the excited states listed in Particle Data Group. Depending on the structure of antidiquark, we construct two possible models for its wave functions: Model I) the antidiquark is symmetric in flavor ($\bar{\bf{6}}_f$) and antisymmetric in color ($\bf{3}_c$) and Model II) the antidiquark is antisymmetric in flavor ($\bf{3}_f$) and symmetric in color ($\bar{\bf{6}}_c$). To test phenomenological relevance of these wave functions, we calculate the mass differences among the excited states of spin $J=0,1,2$ using color-spin interactions. The four-quark wave functions based on Model~I is found to reproduce the observed mass of the excited states of heavy mesons. Also, our four-quark model provides an interesting phenomenology relating to the decay widths of the excited states. To further pursue the possibility of the four-quark structure, we make a few predictions for open charm and open bottom states that may be discovered in future experiments. Most of them are expected to have broad widths, which would make them difficult to be identified experimentally. However, one resonance with $J=1$ containing bottom and strange quarks is expected to appear as a sharp peak with its mass around $B^{\bar s}_{1N} \sim 5753$~MeV. Confirmation of the existence of such states in future experiments will shed light on our understanding of the structure of heavy meson excited states.

Gamow-Teller Strength distributions in $^{76}\textrm{Ge}$, $^{76,82}\textrm{Se}$, and $^{90,92}\textrm{Zr}$ by the Deformed Proton-neutron QRPA

We developed the deformed proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and applied to the evaluation of the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strength distributions including high-lying excited states, which data becomes recently available beyond one or two nucleon threshold by charge exchange reactions using hundreds of MeV projectiles. Our calculations started with single-particle states calculated by a deformed axially symmetric Woods-Saxon potential. Neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairing correlations are explicitly taken into account at the deformed Bardeen Cooper Schriffer theory. Ground state correlations, and two-particle and two-hole mixing states are included in the deformed QRPA. In this work, we use a realistic two-body interaction given by the Brueckner $G$-matrix based on the CD Bonn potential to reduce the ambiguity on the nucleon-nucleon interactions inside nuclei. We applied our formalism to the GT transition strengths for $^{76}$Ge, $^{76,82}$Se, and $^{90,92}\textrm{Zr}$, and compared to available experimental data. The GT strength distributions were sensitive on the deformation parameter as well as its sign, {\it i.e.}, oblate or prolate. The Ikeda sum rule, which is usually thought to be satisfied under the one-body current approximation irrespective of nucleon models, is used to test our numerical calculations and shown to be satisfied without introducing the quenching factor, if high-lying GT excited states are properly taken into account. Most of the GT strength distributions of the nuclei considered in this work turn out to have the high-lying GT excited states beyond one nucleon threshold, which are shown to be consistent with available experimental data.

General limit on the relation between abundances of D and $^7$Li in big bang nucleosynthesis with nucleon injections

The injections of energetic hadrons could have occurred in the early universe by decays of hypothetical long-lived exotic particles. The injections induce the showers of nonthermal hadrons via nuclear scattering. Neutrons generated at these events can react with $^7$Be nuclei and reduce $^7$Be abundance solving a problem of the primordial $^7$Li abundance. We suggest that thermal neutron injection is a way to derive a model independent conservative limit on the relation between abundances of D and $^7$Li in a hadronic energy injection model. We emphasize that an uncertainty in cross sections of inelastic $n+p$ scattering affects the total number of induced neutrons, which determines final abundances of D and $^7$Li. In addition, the annihilations of antinucleons with $^4$He result in higher D abundance and trigger nonthermal $^6$Li production. It is concluded that a reduction of $^7$Li abundance from a value in the standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model down to an observational two $σ$ upper limit is necessarily accompanied by an undesirable increase of D abundance up to at least an observational 12 $σ$ upper limit from observations of quasi-stellar object absorption line systems. The effects of antinucleons and secondary particles produced in the hadronic showers always lead to a severer constraint. The BBN models involving any injections of extra neutrons are thus unlikely to reproduce a small $^7$Li abundance consistent with observations.

Revised Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with long-lived negatively charged massive particles: updated recombination rates, primordial 9Be nucleosynthesis, and impact of new 6Li limits

We extensively reanalyze effects of a long-lived negatively charged massive particle, X-, on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The BBN model with an X- particle was originally motivated by the discrepancy between 6,7Li abundances predicted in standard BBN model and those inferred from observations of metal-poor stars. In this model 7Be is destroyed via the recombination with an X- particle followed by radiative proton capture. We calculate precise rates for the radiative recombinations of 7Be, 7Li, 9Be, and 4He with X-. In nonresonant rates we take into account respective partial waves of scattering states and respective bound states. The finite sizes of nuclear charge distributions cause deviations in wave functions from those of point-charge nuclei. For a heavy X- mass, m_X \gtrsim 100 GeV, the d-wave --> 2P transition is most important for 7Li and 7,9Be, unlike recombination with electrons. Our new nonresonant rate of the 7Be recombination for m_X=1000 GeV is more than 6 times larger than the existing rate. Moreover, we suggest a new important reaction for 9Be production: the recombination of 7Li and X- followed by deuteron capture. We derive binding energies of X-nuclei along with reaction rates and Q-values. We then calculate BBN and find that the amount of 7Be destruction depends significantly on the charge distribution of 7Be. Finally, updated constraints on the initial abundance and the lifetime of the X- are derived in the context of revised upper limits to the primordial 6Li abundance. Parameter regions for the solution to the 7Li problem are revised, and the primordial 9Be abundances is revised.

7Be charge exchange between 7Be3+ ion and exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle in big bang nucleosynthesis

The existence of an exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle, i.e., X-, during big bang nucleosynthesis can affect primordial light element abundances. Especially, the final abundance of 7Li, mainly originating from the electron capture of 7Be, has been suggested to reduce by the 7Be destruction via the radiative X- capture of 7Be followed by the radiative proton capture of the bound state of 7Be and X- (7BeX). We suggest a new route of 7BeX formation, that is the 7Be charge exchange at the reaction of 7Be3+ ion and X-. The formation rate depends on the number fraction of 7Be3+ ion, the charge exchange cross section of 7Be3+, and the probability that produced excited states 7BeX* are converted to the ground state. We estimate respective quantities affecting the 7BeX formation rate, and find that this reaction pathway can be more important than ordinary radiative recombination of 7Be and X-. The effect of the charge exchange reaction is then shown in a latest nuclear reaction network calculation. Quantum physical model calculations for related reactions are needed to precisely estimate the efficiency of this pathway in future.

Asymmetric Neutrino Emission from Magnetized Proto-Neutron Star Matter including Hyperons in Relativistic Mean Field Theory

The absorption/scattering cross sections are suppressed/enhanced incoherently in the direction of the magnetic fielld, B. The asymmetry is 2-4% at the matter density ρ_0 < ρ_B < 3ρ_0 and temperature T < 40 MeV for B=2 X 10^{17} G. This asymmetry is comparable to the effects owing to parity violation or asymmetric magnetic field topology proposed for the origin of pulsar kicks.

Asymmetry in the neutrino and anti-neutrino reactions in a nuclear medium

We study the effect of the density-dependent axial and vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($ν_e$) and anti-neutrino $({\bar ν}_e)$ reactions for a nucleon in nuclear matter or in $^{12}$C. The nucleon form factors in free space are presumed to be modified for a bound nucleon in a nuclear medium. We adopt the density-dependent form factors calculated by the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν}_e$ induced reactions with the initial energy $E = $ 8 $\sim$ 80 MeV. We find that the total $ν_e$ cross sections on $^{12}$C as well as a nucleon in nuclear matter are reduced by about 5% at the nuclear saturation density, $ρ_0$. This reduction is caused by the modification of the nucleon structure in matter. Although the density effect for both cases is relatively small, it is comparable with the effect of Coulomb distortion on the outgoing lepton in the $ν$-reaction. In contrast, the density effect on the ${\bar ν}_e$ reaction reduces the cross section significantly in both nuclear matter and $^{12}$C cases, and the amount maximally becomes of about 35% around $ρ_0$. Such large asymmetry in the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν}_e$ cross sections, which seems to be nearly independent of the target, is originated from the difference in the helicities of ${\bar ν}_e$ and $ν_e$. It is expected that the asymmetry influences the r-process and also the neutrino-process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae.

Effects of the density-dependent weak form factors on the neutrino reaction via neutral current for the nucleon in nuclear medium and $^{12}$C

The nucleon form factors in free space are usually thought to be modified when a nucleon is bound in a nucleus or immersed in a nuclear medium. We investigate effects of the density-dependent axial and weak-vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($ν_e$) and anti-electro-neutrino $({\bar ν_e})$ reactions via neutral current (NC) for a nucleon in nuclear medium or $^{12}$C. For the density-dependent form factors, we exploit the quark-meson-coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν_e}$ induced reactions by NC. About 12% decrease of the total cross section by $ν_e$ reaction on the nucleon is obtained at normal density, $ρ= ρ_0 \sim 0.15 {fm}^{-3} $, as well as about 18% reduction of total $ν_e$ cross section on $^{12}$C, by the modification of the weak form factors of the bound nucleon. However, similarly to the charged current reaction, effects of the nucleon property change in the ${\bar ν}_e$ reaction reduce significantly the cross sections about 30% for the nucleon in matter and $^{12}$C cases. Such a large asymmetry in the ${\bar ν}_e$ cross sections is addressed to originate from the different helicities of ${\bar ν}_e$ and $ν_e$.

Equation of state for neutron stars in SU(3) flavor symmetry

Using several relativistic mean field models (such as GM1, GM3, NL3, TM1, FSUGold and IU-FSU) as well as the quark-meson coupling model, we calculate the particle fractions, the equation of state, the maximum mass and radius of a neutron star within relativistic Hartree approximation. In determining the couplings of the isoscalar, vector mesons to the octet baryons, we examine the extension of SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry to SU(3) flavor symmetry. Furthermore, we consider the strange ($σ^{\ast}$ and $ϕ$) mesons, and study how they affect the equation of state. We find that the equation of state in SU(3) symmetry can sustain a neutron star with mass of $(1.8 \sim 2.1) M_{\odot}$ even if hyperons exist inside the core. In addition, the strange vector ($ϕ$) meson and the variation of baryon structure in matter also play important roles in supporting a massive neutron star.

High-lying Gamow-Teller excited states in the deformed nuclei, $^{76}\textrm{Ge}$ and $^{82}\textrm{Se}$, by the smearing of the Fermi surface in Deformed Quasi-particle RPA (DQRPA)

With the advent of high analysis technology in detecting the Gamow-Teller (GT) excited states beyond one nucleon emission threshold, the quenching of the GT strength to the Ikeda sum rule seems to be recovered by the high-lying GT states. Moreover, in some nuclei, the stronger GT peaks than any other peaks appear explicitly in the high-lying excited states. We address that these high-lying GT excited states stems from the smearing of the Fermi surface by the increase of the chemical potential owing to the deformation within a framework of the deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation (DQRPA). Detailed mechanism leading to the smearing is discussed, and comparisons to the available experimental data are shown to explain the strong peaks on the high-lying GT excited states in a satisfactory manner.

Neutron stars in a perturbative $f(R)$ gravity model with strong magnetic fields

We investigate the effect of a strong magnetic field on the structure of neutron stars in a model with perturbative $f(R)$ gravity. The effect of an interior strong magnetic field of about $10^{17 \sim 18}$ G on the equation of state is derived in the context of a quantum hadrodynamics (QHD) model. We solve the modified spherically symmetric hydrostatic equilibrium equations derived for a gravity model with $f(R)=R+αR^2$. Effects of both the finite magnetic field and the modified gravity are detailed for various values of the magnetic field and the perturbation parameter $α$ along with a discussion of their physical implications. We show that there exists a parameter space of the modified gravity and the magnetic field strength, in which even a soft equation of state can accommodate a large ($> 2$ M$_\odot$) maximum neutron star mass through the modified mass-radius relation.

Shell evolution of N=20 nuclei and Gamow-Teller strengths of $^{30,32,34}$Mg by the deformed QRPA

Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions of Mg isotopes are investigated within a framework of the deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation(DQRPA). We found that the N=20 shell closure in $^{28 \sim 34}$Mg was broken by the prolate shape deformation originating from the {\it fp}-intruder states. The shell closure breaking gives rise to a shift of low-lying GT excited states into high-lying states. Discussions regarding the shell evolution trend of single particle states around N=20 nuclei are also presented with the comparison to other approaches.

Neutrino induced reactions related to the $ν$-process nucleosynthesis of ${}^{92}$Nb and ${}^{98}$Tc

It has recently been proposed that ${}^{92}_{41}$Nb and ${}^{98}_{43}$Tc may have been formed in the $ν$-process. We investigate the neutrino induced reactions related to the $ν$-process origin of the two odd-odd nuclei. The main neutrino reactions for ${}^{92}_{41}$Nb are the charged-current (CC) $^{92}$Zr($ν_e,e^{-}$)$^{92}$Nb and the neutral-current (NC) $^{93}$Nb($ν ({\bar ν}), ν^{'} ({\bar ν})^{'}$ n)$^{92}$Nb reactions. The main reactions for ${}^{98}_{43}$Tc, are the CC reaction $^{98}$Mo($ν_e,e^-$)$^{98}$Tc and the NC reaction $^{99}$Ru($ν ({\bar ν}), ν^{'} ({\bar ν})^{'}$ p)$^{98}$Tc. Our calculations are carried out using the quasi-particle random phase approximation. Numerical results are presented for the energy and temperature dependent cross sections. Since charge exchange reactions by neutrons may also lead to the formation of ${}^{92}_{41}$Nb and ${}^{98}_{43}$Tc, we discuss the feasibility of the $^{92}$Mo(n,p)$^{92}$Nb and $^{98}$Ru(n,p)$^{98}$Tc reactions to produce these nuclei.

QHD equation of state for strongly magnetized neutron stars

We investigate the quantum hadrodynamic equation of state for neutron stars (with and without including hyperons) in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The deduced masses and radii are consistent with recent observations of high mass neutron stars even in the case of hyperonic nuclei for sufficiently strong magnetic fields. The calculated adiabatic index and the moments of inertia for magnetized neutron stars exhibit rapid changes with density. This may provide some insight into the mechanism of star-quakes and flares in magnetars.

Roles of High-lying Excited States on Neutrino Reactions and the Gamow Teller strength for $^{40}$Ar

Neutrino reactions on $^{40}$Ar via charged and neutral currents for detecting solar and core collapsing supernovae (SNe) neutrinos and the Gamow Teller strength are calculated by considering the high-lying excited states up to a few tens of MeV region. The nucleus was originally exploited to identify the solar neutrino emitted from $^{8}$B produced in the pp-chains on the Sun. With the higher energy neutrinos emitted from the core collapsing SNe, contributions from higher multi-pole transitions including the spin dipole resonances (SDR) as well as the Gamow Teller (GT) and Fermi transitions are shown to be important ingredients for understanding reactions induced by the SNe as well as solar neutrinos. In this work, we focused on the role of high-lying excited states which are located beyond a few low-lying states known in the experiment. Expected large difference between the cross sections of $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν_e}$ reactions on $^{40}$Ar, which difference has been anticipated in previous calculations because of the large Q value in the ${\bar ν}_e$ reaction, is significantly diminished. The reduction leads only to about 2 times difference between them. Our calculations are carried out by the Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA), which takes account of the neutron-proton pairing as well as proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing correlations. They were successfully applied in the description of the nuclear beta decay and relevant neutrino reaction data on $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe, and the GT data on the $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta.

Time Dependent Quark Masses and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Revisited

We reinvestigate the constraints from primordial nucleosynthesis on a possible time-dependent quark mass. The limits on such quark-mass variations are particularly sensitive to the adopted observational abundance constraints. Hence, in the present study we have considered updated light-element abundances and uncertainties deduced from observations. We also consider new nuclear reaction rates and an independent analysis of the influence of such quark-mass variations on the resonance properties of the important 3He(d,p)4He reaction. We find that the updated abundance and resonance constraints imply a narrower range on the possible quark-mass variations in the early universe. We also find that, contrary to previous investigations, the optimum concordance region reduces to a (95% C.L.) value of -0.005 < delta m_q/m_q < 0.007 consistent with no variation in the averaged quark mass.

Medium effects of magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields

We investigate medium effects due to density-dependent magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields. If we allow the variation of anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of baryons in dense matter under strong magnetic fields, AMMs of nucleons are enhanced to be larger than those of hyperons. The enhancement naturally affects the chemical potentials of baryons to be large and leads to the increase of a proton fraction. Consequently, it causes the suppression of hyperons, resulting in the stiffness of the equation of state. Under the presumed strong magnetic fields, we evaluate relevant particles' population, the equation of state and the maximum masses of neutron stars by including density-dependent AMMs and compare them with those obtained from AMMs in free space.

Neutrino reactions on $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta via charged and neutral currents by the Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA)

Cosmological origins of the two heaviest odd-odd nuclei, $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta, are believed to be closely related to the neutrino-process. We investigate in detail neutrino-induced reactions on the nuclei. Charged current (CC) reactions, $^{138}$Ba$ (ν_e, e^{-}) ^{138}$La and $^{180}$Hf$ (ν_e, e^{-}) ^{180}$Ta, are calculated by the standard Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) with neutron-proton pairing as well as neutron-neutron, proton-proton pairing correlations. For neutral current (NC) reactions, $^{139}$La$ (ν ν^{'}) ^{139}${La}$^*$ and $^{181}$Ta$ (ν, ν^{'}) ^{181}$Ta$^*$, we generate ground and excited states of odd-even target nuclei, $^{139}$La and $^{181}$Ta, by operating one quasi-particle to even-even nuclei, $^{138}$Ba and $^{180}$Hf, which are assumed as the BCS ground state. Numerical results for CC reactions are shown to be consistent with recent semi-empirical data deduced from the Gamow-Teller strength distributions measured in the ($^{3}$He, t) reaction. Results for NC reactions are estimated to be smaller by a factor about 4 $\sim$ 5 rather than those by CC reactions. Finally, cross sections weighted by the incident neutrino flux in the core collapsing supernova are presented for further applications to the network calculations for relevant nuclear abundances.

Neutrino reactions via neutral and charged current by Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation(QRPA)

We developed the quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) for the neutrino scattering off even-even nuclei via neutral current (NC) and charged cur- rent (CC). The QRPA has been successfully applied for the βand ββdecay of relevant nuclei. To describe neutrino scattering, general multipole transitions by weak interactions with a finite momentum transfer are calculated for NC and CC reaction with detailed formalism. Since we consider neutron-proton (np) pairing as well as neutron-neutron (nn) and proton-proton (pp) pairing correlations, the nn + pp QRPA and np QRPA are combined in a framework, which enables to describe both NC and CC reactions in a consistent way. Numerical results for ν-^{12}C, -^{56}Fe and -^{56}Ni reactions are shown to comply with other theoretical calculations and reproduce well available experimental data.

Signals for strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering in quasi-elastic region

Strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering are investigated on the elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and the neutrino-nucleus scattering for 12C target in the quasi-elastic region on the incident energy of 500 MeV, within the framework of a relativistic single particle model. For the neutrino-nucleus scattering, the effects of final state interaction for the knocked-out nucleon are included by a relativistic optical potential. In the cross sections we found some cancellations of the strange quark contributions between the knocked-out protons and neutrons. Consequently, the asymmetries between the incident neutrino and antineutrino which is the ratio of neutral current to charged current, and the difference between the asymmetries are shown to be able to yield more feasible quantities for the strangeness effects. In order to explicitly display importance of the cancellations, results of the exclusive reaction 16O(ν, ν' p) are additionally presented for detecting the strangeness effects.
