RFSoC-based front-end electronics for pulse detection

Radiation measurement relies on pulse detection, which can be performed using various configurations of high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). For optimal power consumption, design simplicity, system flexibility, and the availability of DSP slices, we consider the Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) to be a more suitable option than traditional setups. To this end, we have developed custom RFSoC-based electronics and verified its feasibility. The ADCs on RFSoC exhibit a flat frequency response of 1-125 MHz. The root-mean-square (RMS) noise level is 2.1 ADC without any digital signal processing. The digital signal processing improves the RMS noise level to 0.8 ADC (input equivalent 40 Vrms). Baseline correction via digital signal processing can effectively prevent photomultiplier overshoot after a large pulse. Crosstalk between all channels is less than -55 dB. The measured data transfer speed can support up to 32 kHz trigger rates (corresponding to 750 Mbps). Overall, our RFSoC-based electronics are highly suitable for pulse detection, and after some modifications, they will be employed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND).

A search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND with gamma-ray bursts

We present the results of a time-coincident event search for low-energy electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND detector with gamma-ray bursts from the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Using a variable coincidence time window of ±\pm500s plus the duration of each gamma-ray burst, no statistically significant excess above background is observed. We place the world's most stringent 90% confidence level upper limit on the electron antineutrino fluence below 17.5 MeV. Assuming a Fermi-Dirac neutrino energy spectrum from the gamma-ray burst source, we use the available redshift data to constrain the electron antineutrino luminosity and effective temperature.

Abundances of uranium and thorium elements in Earth estimated by geoneutrino spectroscopy

The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U^{238}\mathrm{U}, 235U^{235}\mathrm{U}, 232Th^{232}\mathrm{Th}, and 40K^{40}\mathrm{K} have contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth model. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid-Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18-year observation time, and improvements in detector background levels mainly by an 8-year almost rector-free period now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. Herein the KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High-Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σσ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.

KamLAND's search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos with astrophysical neutrinos from IceCube

We report the results of a search for MeV-scale astrophysical neutrinos in KamLAND presented as an excess in the number of coincident neutrino interactions associated with the publicly available high-energy neutrino datasets from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We find no statistically significant excess in the number of observed low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND, given a coincidence time window of ±\pm500s, ±\pm1,000s, ±\pm3,600s, and ±\pm10,000s around each of the IceCube neutrinos. We use this observation to present limits from 1.8 MeV to 100 MeV on the electron antineutrino fluence, assuming a mono-energetic flux. We then compare the results to several astrophysical measurements performed by IceCube and place a limit at the 90% confidence level on the electron antineutrino isotropic thermal luminosity from the TXS 0506+056 blazar.

Magnetic-field and pressure phase diagram of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CsCuCl3_3 clarified by magnetic susceptibility measured with a proximity detector oscillator

The effect of pressure (PP) on magnetic susceptibility of CsCuCl3_3 was examined in magnetic fields (μ0\rm μ_0HH) of up to 51 T using a proximity detector oscillator (PDO), and the HH-PP phase diagram of CsCuCl3_3 was constructed over the saturation field (HsatH_{\rm sat}). We found that, with increasing PP, HsatH_{\rm sat} increases and the uud-phase that appeared at PP = 0.7 GPa widened. Based on comparison between the experimental and calculated HH-PP phase diagrams, the Y-phase was predicted to appear above 1.7 GPa. The interchain antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the abab-plane was evaluated and found to increase with increasing PP, which is consistent with a previous study under high pressure [D. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Commun. {\bf 12}, 4263 (2021).]. Moreover, an anomaly was observed below PP = 0.6 GPa just below HsatH_{\rm sat} and might be a new phase transition derived from nonlinear response caused by the PDO technique.

Search for supernova neutrinos and constraint on the galactic star formation rate with the KamLAND data

We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8--111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of ∼\sim10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate as to be 0.15 yr−1^{-1} with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40--59 kpc and 65--81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5--22.7) M⊙yr−1M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr}^{-1} with a 90% confidence level.

A Search for Charged Excitation of Dark Matter with the KamLAND-Zen Detector

There are many theories where a dark matter particle is part of a multiplet with an electrically charged state. If WIMP dark matter (χ0χ^{0}) is accompanied by a charged excited state (χ−χ^{-}) separated by a small mass difference, it can form a stable bound state with a nucleus. In supersymmetric models, the χ0χ^{0} and the χ−χ^{-} could be the neutralino and a charged slepton, such as the neutralino-stau degenerate model. The formation binding process is expected to result in an energy deposition of {\it O}(1--10 MeV), making it suitable for detection in large liquid scintillator detectors. We describe new constraints on the bound state formation with a xenon nucleus using the KamLAND-Zen 400 Phase-II dataset. In order to enlarge the searchable parameter space, all xenon isotopes in the detector were used. For a benchmark parameter set of mχ0=100m_{χ^{0}} = 100 GeV and Δm=10Δm = 10 MeV, this study sets the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section ⟨σv⟩\langleσv\rangle and the decay-width of χ−χ^{-} of 2.0×10−312.0 \times 10^{-31} cm3/s{\rm cm^3/s} and 1.1×10−181.1 \times 10^{-18} GeV, respectively (90\% confidence level).

Limits on astrophysical antineutrinos with the KamLAND experiment

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos (νˉe\barν_e) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3 to 30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60--110 cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} (90% CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improves on the upper probability limit of 8^{8}B solar neutrinos converting into νˉe\barν_e's, Pνe→νˉe<3.5×10−5P_{ν_e \rightarrow \barν_e} < 3.5\times10^{-5} (90% CL) assuming an undistorted νˉe\barν_e shape. This corresponds to a solar νˉe\barν_e flux of 60 cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

PICOLON (Pure Inorganic Crystal Observatory for LOw-energy Neutr(al)ino) aims to search for cosmic dark matter by high purity NaI(Tl) scintillator. We developed extremely pure NaI(Tl) crystal by hybrid purification method. The recent result of 210^{210}Pb in our NaI(Tl) is less than 5.7 μμBq/kg. Search for Solar Flare Neutrinos with the KamLAND detector

We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of 8.4×1078.4 \times 10^7 cm−2^{-2} (3.0×1093.0 \times 10^{9} cm−2^{-2}) on electron anti-neutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.

KamLAND Sensitivity to Neutrinos from Pre-Supernova Stars

In the late stages of nuclear burning for massive stars ($M>8~M_{\sun}$), the production of neutrino-antineutrino pairs through various processes becomes the dominant stellar cooling mechanism. As the star evolves, the energy of these neutrinos increases and in the days preceding the supernova a significant fraction of emitted electron anti-neutrinos exceeds the energy threshold for inverse beta decay on free hydrogen. This is the golden channel for liquid scintillator detectors because the coincidence signature allows for significant reductions in background signals. We find that the kiloton-scale liquid scintillator detector KamLAND can detect these pre-supernova neutrinos from a star with a mass of $25~M_{\sun}$ at a distance less than 690~pc with 3σσ significance before the supernova. This limit is dependent on the neutrino mass ordering and background levels. KamLAND takes data continuously and can provide a supernova alert to the community.

Search for electron antineutrinos associated with gravitational wave events GW150914 and GW151226 using KamLAND

We present a search for low energy antineutrino events coincident with the gravitational wave events GW150914 and GW151226, and the candidate event LVT151012 using KamLAND, a kiloton-scale antineutrino detector. We find no inverse beta-decay neutrino events within ±500\pm 500 seconds of either gravitational wave signal. This non-detection is used to constrain the electron antineutrino fluence and the luminosity of the astrophysical sources.

Structure near K−K^-+pp+pp threshold in the in-flight 3^3He(K−,Λp)n(K^-,Λp)n reaction

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to ΛpΛp, the 3He(K−,Λp)nmissing {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing} reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/cc. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass MXM_X of the 3He(K−,Λp)X {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the ΛpnΛpn final state. The observed ΛpnΛp n events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the ΛpΛp. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum χ2χ^2 method was applied to deduce its mass MX =M_X\ = 2355 −8+6 ^{+ 6}_{ - 8} (stat.) ±12 \pm 12 (syst.) MeV/c2^2, and decay-width ΓX =Γ_X\ = 110 −17+19 ^{+ 19}_{ - 17} (stat.) ±27 \pm 27 (syst.) MeV/c2^2, respectively. The form factor parameter QX∼Q_X \sim 400 MeV/cc implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

7Be Solar Neutrino Measurement with KamLAND

We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate of 862 keV 7Be solar neutrinos based on a 165.4 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The observed rate is 582 +/- 90 (kton-day)^-1, which corresponds to a 862 keV 7Be solar neutrino flux of (3.26 +/- 0.50) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, assuming a pure electron flavor flux. Comparing this flux with the standard solar model prediction and further assuming three flavor mixing, a nu_e survival probability of 0.66 +/- 0.14 is determined from the KamLAND data. Utilizing a global three flavor oscillation analysis, we obtain a total 7Be solar neutrino flux of (5.82 +/- 0.98) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, which is consistent with the standard solar model predictions.

A compact ultra-clean system for deploying radioactive sources inside the KamLAND detector

We describe a compact, ultra-clean device used to deploy radioactive sources along the vertical axis of the KamLAND liquid-scintillator neutrino detector for purposes of calibration. The device worked by paying out and reeling in precise lengths of a hanging, small-gauge wire rope (cable); an assortment of interchangeable radioactive sources could be attached to a weight at the end of the cable. All components exposed to the radiopure liquid scintillator were made of chemically compatible UHV-cleaned materials, primarily stainless steel, in order to avoid contaminating or degrading the scintillator. To prevent radon intrusion, the apparatus was enclosed in a hermetically sealed housing inside a glove box, and both volumes were regularly flushed with purified nitrogen gas. An infrared camera attached to the side of the housing permitted real-time visual monitoring of the cable's motion, and the system was controlled via a graphical user interface.

A Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment Using J-PARC Neutrino Beam and Hyper-Kamiokande

Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of CPCP asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this document, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis has been updated from the previous Letter of Intent [K. Abe et al., arXiv:1109.3262 [hep-ex]], based on the experience gained from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW ×\times 107^7 sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to 1.56×10221.56\times10^{22} protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a 2.52.5-degree off-axis neutrino beam produced by the J-PARC proton synchrotron, it is expected that the CPCP phase δCPδ_{CP} can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of δCPδ_{CP}, and CPCP violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than 3 σ3\,σ (5 σ5\,σ) for 7676% (5858%) of the δCPδ_{CP} parameter space.

Chiral surface twists and skyrmion stability in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets

Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) investigations of modulated states in a FeGe wedge and detailed calculations demonstrate that chiral twists arising near the surfaces of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets (Meynell et al. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 014406 (2014)) provide a stabilization mechanism for skyrmion lattices and helicoids in cubic helimagnet nanolayers. The calculated magnetic phase diagram for free standing cubic helimagnet nanolayers shows that magnetization processes in these compounds fundamentally differ from those in bulk cubic helimagnets and are characterized by the first-order transitions between modulated phases and the formation of specific multidomain states. The paper reports LTEM observations of multidomain patterns in FeGe free-standing nanolayers.

Dark matter search project PICO-LON

The PICO-LON project aims at search for cold dark matter by means of highly radio-pure and large volume NaI(Tl) scintillator. The NaI powder was purifed by chemical processing to remove lead isotopes and selecting a high purity graphite crucible. The concentrations of radioactive impurities of 226^{226}Ra and 228^{228}Th were effectively reduced to 58±\pm4 μμBq/kg and 1.5±\pm1.9 μμBq/kg, respectively. It should be remarked that the concentration of 210^{210}Pb, which is crucial for the sensitivity to dark matter, was reduced to 24±\pm2 μμBq/kg. The total background rate at 10 keVee was as low as 8 keV−1^{-1}kg−1^{-1}day−1^{-1}, which was sufficiently low to search for dark matter. Further purification of NaI(Tl) ingot and future prospect of PICO-LON project is discussed.

Measurement of the strong interaction induced shift and width of the 1s state of kaonic deuterium at J-PARC

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

Search for double-beta decay of 136Xe to excited states of 136Ba with the KamLAND-Zen experiment

A search for double-beta decays of 136Xe to excited states of 136Ba has been performed with the first phase data set of the KamLAND-Zen experiment. The 0+1, 2+1 and 2+2 transitions of 0ν\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 89.5kg-yr of 136Xe, while the same transitions of 2ν\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 61.8kg-yr. No excess over background was found for all decay modes. The lower half-life limits of the 2+1 state transitions of 0ν\{beta}\{beta} and 2ν\{beta}\{beta} decay were improved to T(0ν, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 2.6\times10^25 yr and T(2ν, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 4.6\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.), respectively. We report on the first experimental lower half-life limits for the transitions to the 0+1 state of 136Xe for 0ν\{beta}\{beta} and 2ν\{beta}\{beta} decay. They are T (0ν, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 2.4\times10^25 yr and T(2ν, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 8.3\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). The transitions to the 2+2 states are also evaluated for the first time to be T(0ν, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 2.6\times10^25 yr and T(2ν, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 9.0\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). These results are compared to recent theoretical predictions.

Search for n-nbar oscillation in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutron-antineutron (n−nˉn-\bar{n}) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or 2.45×10342.45 \times 10^{34} neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for n−nˉn-\bar{n} oscillation was found, the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in 16{}^{16}O, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be 1.9×10321.9 \times 10^{32}~years at the 90\% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be 2.7×1082.7 \times 10^8~s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of 0.517×10230.517 \times 10^{23}~s−1^{-1} and its uncertainty.

CeLAND: search for a 4th light neutrino state with a 3 PBq 144Ce-144Pr electron antineutrino generator in KamLAND

The reactor neutrino and gallium anomalies can be tested with a 3-4 PBq (75-100 kCi scale) 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center or next to a large low-background liquid scintillator detector. The antineutrino generator will be produced by the Russian reprocessing plant PA Mayak as early as 2014, transported to Japan, and deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND) as early as 2015. KamLAND's 13 m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure the energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, sterile neutrino state. This will provide a comprehensive test of the electron dissaperance neutrino anomalies and could lead to the discovery of a 4th neutrino state for Delta_m^2 > 0.1 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta) > 0.05.

White paper: CeLAND - Investigation of the reactor antineutrino anomaly with an intense 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino source in KamLAND

We propose to test for short baseline neutrino oscillations, implied by the recent reevaluation of the reactor antineutrino flux and by anomalous results from the gallium solar neutrino detectors. The test will consist of producing a 75 kCi 144Ce - 144Pr antineutrino source to be deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). KamLAND's 13m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, "sterile" state. Limits on Majoron-emitting double-beta decays of Xe-136 in the KamLAND-Zen experiment

We present limits on Majoron-emitting neutrinoless double-beta decay modes based on an exposure of 112.3 days with 125 kg of Xe-136. In particular, a lower limit on the ordinary (spectral index n = 1) Majoron-emitting decay half-life of Xe-136 is obtained as T_{1/2}^{0νχ^{0}} > 2.6 x 10^{24} yr at 90% C.L., a factor of five more stringent than previous limits. The corresponding upper limit on the effective Majoron-neutrino coupling, using a range of available nuclear matrix calculations, is <g_{ee}> < (0.8 - 1.6) x 10^{-5}. This excludes a previously unconstrained region of parameter space and strongly limits the possible contribution of ordinary Majoron emission modes to 0νββdecay for neutrino masses in the inverted hierarchy scheme.

Magnetization and spin gap in two-dimensional organic ferrimagnet BIPNNBNO

A magnetization process in two-dimensional ferrimagnet BIPNNBNO is analyzed. The compound consists of ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains coupled by two sorts of antiferromagnetic interactions. Whereas a behavior of the magnetization curve in higher magnetic fields can be understood within a process for the separate ferrimagnetic chain, an appearance of the singlet plateau at lower fields is an example of non-Lieb-Mattis type ferrimagnetism. By using the exact diagonalization technique for a finite clusters of sizes 4x8 and 4x10 we show that the interchain frustration coupling plays an essential role in stabilization of the singlet phase. These results are complemented by an analysis of four cylindrically coupled ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains via an abelian bosonization technique and an effective theory based on the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg model when the interchain interactions are sufficiently weak/strong, respectively.

Measurement of the 8B Solar Neutrino Flux with the KamLAND Liquid Scintillator Detector

We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate from 8B solar neutrinos based on a 123 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The background-subtracted electron recoil rate, above a 5.5 MeV analysis threshold is 1.49+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.17(syst) events per kton-day. Interpreted as due to a pure electron flavor flux with a 8B neutrino spectrum, this corresponds to a spectrum integrated flux of 2.77+/-0.26(stat)+/-0.32(syst) x 10^6 cm^-2s^-1. The analysis threshold is driven by 208Tl present in the liquid scintillator, and the main source of systematic uncertainty is due to background from cosmogenic 11Be. The measured rate is consistent with existing measurements and with Standard Solar Model predictions which include matter enhanced neutrino oscillation.

CANGAROO-III Observation of TeV Gamma Rays from the vicinity of PSR B1 706-44

Observation by the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic system of the Imaging Cherenkov Telescope has detected extended emission of TeV gamma rays in the vicinity of the pulsar PSR B1706−-44. The strength of the signal observed as gamma-ray-like events varies when we apply different ways of emulating background events. The reason for such uncertainties is argued in relevance to gamma-rays embedded in the "off-source data", that is, unknown sources and diffuse emission in the Galactic plane, namely, the existence of a complex structure of TeV gamma-ray emission around PSR B1706−-44.

CANGAROO-III search for TeV Gamma-rays from two clusters of galaxies

Because accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies may accelerate particles to high energies, clusters are candidate sites for the origin of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-rays. A prediction was presented for gamma-ray emission from a cluster of galaxies at a detectable level with the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-ray emission was produced via inverse Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by electron-positron pairs generated by collisions of UHE cosmic rays in the cluster. We observed two clusters of galaxies, Abell 3667 and Abell 4038, searching for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system in 2006. The analysis showed no significant excess around these clusters, yielding upper limits on the gamma-ray emission. From a comparison of the upper limit for the north-west radio relic region of Abell 3667 with a model prediction, we derive a lower limit for the magnetic field of the region of ~0.1 micro G. This shows the potential of gamma-ray observations in studies of the cluster environment. We also discuss the flux upper limit from cluster center regions using a model of gamma-ray emission from neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of cosmic-ray protons with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The derived upper limit of the cosmic-ray energy density within this framework is an order of magnitude higher than that of our Galaxy.

Magnetic hysteresis in a molecular Ising ferrimagnet: Glauber dynamics approach

Motivated by recent experimental results reporting giant coercive fields in Co(II)-based molecular magnets we present a theory of hysteresis phenomena based on the Glauber stochastic dynamics. Unusual form of hysteresis loops is similar to those of found in Co-based quasi-one-dimensional ferrimagnet CoPhOMe at low temperatures. Temperature dependence of the coercive field has a characteristic form with an inflection that may serve as an indicator of the Glauber dynamics in real compounds. A relevance of the model for other Co-based molecular magnets is discussed.

Spin density distribution in a partially magnetized organic quantum magnet

Polarized neutron diffraction experiments on an organic magnetic material reveal a highly skewed distribution of spin density within the magnetic molecular unit. The very large magnitude of the observed effect is due to quantum spin fluctuations. The data are in quantitative agreement with direct diagonalization results for a model spin Hamiltonian, and provide insight on the actual microscopic origin of the relevant exchange interactions.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Reactor Measurement of θ13θ_{13} and Its Complementarity to Long-Baseline Experiments

A possibility to measure sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} using reactor neutrinos is examined in detail. It is shown that the sensitivity sin⁡22θ13>0.02\sin^22θ_{13}>0.02 can be reached with 20 ton-year data by placing identical CHOOZ-like detectors at near and far distances from a giant nuclear power plant whose total thermal energy is 24.3 GWth{\text{GW}_{\text{th}}}. It is emphasized that this measurement is free from the parameter degeneracies which occur in accelerator appearance experiments, and therefore the reactor measurement plays a role complementary to accelerator experiments. It is also shown that the reactor measurement may be able to resolve the degeneracy in θ23θ_{23} if sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} and cos⁡22θ23\cos^22θ_{23} are relatively large.

Semiclassical properties and chaos degree for the quantum baker's map

We study the chaotic behaviour and the quantum-classical correspondence for the baker's map. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation values is investigated and it is numerically shown that it is lost at the logarithmic timescale. The quantum chaos degree is computed and it is demonstrated that it describes the chaotic features of the model. The correspondence between classical and quantum chaos degrees is considered.
