A melonic quantum mechanical model without disorder

We consider a quantum mechanical model involving interacting fermions without disorder that has the same low energy physics as the supersymmetric SYK model. The model is $SU(2)$ invariant, and the supercharge involves the $ SU(2) $ 3j symbol. We analyze various solvable corners, conceptually explain why it has a melonic expansion, and perform an exact diagonalization for small values of $N$. Expanded around the states with maximal angular momentum, the model is approximated by a two dimensional CFT. The BPS states have a simple description in that regime.

Accumulation-Point Amplitudes in String Theory

We point out some common qualitative features of the Coon amplitude$\unicode{x2014}$a family of deformations of the Veneziano amplitude with logarithmic Regge trajectories$\unicode{x2014}$and the open string scattering amplitude for strings ending on a D-brane in AdS. Both reduce to the Veneziano amplitude at relatively low energies. Both systems have an accumulation point in their spectrum, with an infinite number of states below a certain energy. The approach to this point is very similar. Both have the same high-energy fixed-angle behavior. Nevertheless, we find some differences in the spectrum of states with highest angular momentum. These similarities suggest that there may exist a string background that realizes the Coon amplitude.

Symmetries Near the Horizon

We consider a nearly-AdS$_2$ gravity theory on the two-sided wormhole geometry. We construct three gauge-invariant operators in NAdS which move bulk matter relative to the dynamical boundaries. In a two-sided system, these operators satisfy an SL(2) algebra (up to non-perturbative corrections). In a semiclassical limit, these generators act like SL(2) transformations of the boundary time, or conformal symmetries of the two sided boundary theory. These can be used to define an operator-state mapping. A particular large N and low temperature limit of the SYK model has precisely the same structure, and this construction of the exact generators also applies. We also discuss approximate, but simpler, constructions of the generators in the SYK model. These are closely related to the "size" operator and are connected to the maximal chaos behavior captured by out of time order correlators.

String scale black holes at large $D$

We study aspects of black holes near the Hagedorn temperature. The large dimension expansion introduced by Soda, Emparan, Grumiller and Tanabe connects them to the well studied two dimensional black hole based on $SL(2)_k/U(1)$. This allows us to explore black holes at string scale temperatures. We argue that the black hole can surpass the Hagedorn temperature, but at a somewhat larger temperature it is likely to turn over to a highly excited string.

Replica Wormholes and the Entropy of Hawking Radiation

The information paradox can be realized in anti-de Sitter spacetime joined to a Minkowski region. In this setting, we show that the large discrepancy between the von Neumann entropy as calculated by Hawking and the requirements of unitarity is fixed by including new saddles in the gravitational path integral. These saddles arise in the replica method as complexified wormholes connecting different copies of the black hole. As the replica number $n \to 1$, the presence of these wormholes leads to the island rule for the computation of the fine-grained gravitational entropy. We discuss these replica wormholes explicitly in two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to matter.

SYK wormhole formation in real time

We study the real time formation of the ground state of two coupled SYK models. This is a highly entangled state which is close to the thermofield double state and can be viewed as a wormhole. We start from a high temperature state, we let it cool by coupling to a cold bath. We numerically solve for the large N dynamics. Our main result is that the system forms a wormhole by going through a region with negative specific heat, taking time that is independent of N. The dynamics is smooth everywhere and it seems to follow the equilibrium thermodynamic configurations of the microcanonical ensemble. Also we comment on the relation between this coupled SYK model and Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theory with bulk fields.

The Page curve of Hawking radiation from semiclassical geometry

We consider a gravity theory coupled to matter, where the matter has a higher-dimensional holographic dual. In such a theory, finding quantum extremal surfaces becomes equivalent to finding the RT/HRT surfaces in the higher-dimensional theory. Using this we compute the entropy of Hawking radiation and argue that it follows the Page curve, as suggested by recent computations of the entropy and entanglement wedges for old black holes. The higher-dimensional geometry connects the radiation to the black hole interior in the spirit of ER=EPR. The black hole interior then becomes part of the entanglement wedge of the radiation. Inspired by this, we propose a new rule for computing the entropy of quantum systems entangled with gravitational systems which involves searching for "islands" in determining the entanglement wedge.

Supersymmetric SYK models

We discuss a supersymmetric generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. These are quantum mechanical models involving $N$ Majorana fermions. The supercharge is given by a polynomial expression in terms of the Majorana fermions with random coefficients. The Hamiltonian is the square of the supercharge. The ${\cal N}=1$ model with a single supercharge has unbroken supersymmetry at large $N$, but non-perturbatively spontaneously broken supersymmetry in the exact theory. We analyze the model by looking at the large $N$ equation, and also by performing numerical computations for small values of $N$. We also compute the large $N$ spectrum of "singlet" operators, where we find a structure qualitatively similar to the ordinary SYK model. We also discuss an ${\cal N}=2$ version. In this case, the model preserves supersymmetry in the exact theory and we can compute a suitably weighted Witten index to count the number of ground states, which agrees with the large $N$ computation of the entropy. In both cases, we discuss the supersymmetric generalizations of the Schwarzian action which give the dominant effects at low energies.

Comments on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We study a quantum mechanical model proposed by Sachdev, Ye and Kitaev. The model consists of $N$ Majorana fermions with random interactions of a few fermions at a time. It it tractable in the large $N$ limit, where the classical variable is a bilocal fermion bilinear. The model becomes strongly interacting at low energies where it develops an emergent conformal symmetry. We study two and four point functions of the fundamental fermions. This provides the spectrum of physical excitations for the bilocal field. The emergent conformal symmetry is a reparametrization symmetry, which is spontaneously broken to $SL(2,R)$, leading to zero modes. These zero modes are lifted by a small residual explicit breaking, which produces an enhanced contribution to the four point function. This contribution displays a maximal Lyapunov exponent in the chaos region (out of time ordered correlator). We expect these features to be universal properties of large $N$ quantum mechanics systems with emergent reparametrization symmetry. This article is largely based on talks given by Kitaev \cite{KitaevTalks}, which motivated us to work out the details of the ideas described there.

Conformal symmetry and its breaking in two dimensional Nearly Anti-de-Sitter space

We study a two dimensional dilaton gravity system, recently examined by Almheiri and Polchinski, which describes near extremal black holes, or more generally, nearly $AdS_2$ spacetimes. The asymptotic symmetries of $AdS_2$ are all the time reparametrizations of the boundary. These symmetries are spontaneously broken by the $AdS_2$ geometry and they are explicitly broken by the small deformation away from $AdS_2$. This pattern of spontaneous plus explicit symmetry breaking governs the gravitational backreaction of the system. It determines several gravitational properties such as the linear in temperature dependence of the near extremal entropy as well as the gravitational corrections to correlation functions. These corrections include the ones determining the growth of out of time order correlators that is indicative of chaos. These gravitational aspects can be described in terms of a Schwarzian derivative effective action for a reparametrization.

A bound on chaos

We conjecture a sharp bound on the rate of growth of chaos in thermal quantum systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. Chaos can be diagnosed using an out-of-time-order correlation function closely related to the commutator of operators separated in time. We conjecture that the influence of chaos on this correlator can develop no faster than exponentially, with Lyapunov exponent $λ_L \le 2 πk_B T/\hbar$. We give a precise mathematical argument, based on plausible physical assumptions, establishing this conjecture.

Cosmological Collider Physics

We study the imprint of new particles on the primordial cosmological fluctuations. New particles with masses comparable to the Hubble scale produce a distinctive signature on the non-gaussianities. This feature arises in the squeezed limit of the correlation functions of primordial fluctuations. It consists of particular power law, or oscillatory, behavior that contains information about the masses of new particles. There is an angular dependence that gives information about the spin. We also have a relative phase that crucially depends on the quantum mechanical nature of the fluctuations and can be viewed as arising from the interference between two processes. While some of these features were noted before in the context of specific inflationary scenarios, here we give a general description emphasizing the role of symmetries in determining the final result.

Looking for a bulk point

We consider Lorentzian correlators of local operators. In perturbation theory, singularities occur when we can draw a position-space Landau diagram with null lines. In theories with gravity duals, we can also draw Landau diagrams in the bulk. We argue that certain singularities can arise only from bulk diagrams, not from boundary diagrams. As has been previously observed, these singularities are a clear diagnostic of bulk locality. We analyze some properties of these perturbative singularities and discuss their relation to the OPE and the dimensions of double-trace operators. In the exact nonperturbative theory, we expect no singularity at these locations. We prove this statement in 1+1 dimensions by CFT methods.

Relative entropy equals bulk relative entropy

We consider the gravity dual of the modular Hamiltonian associated to a general subregion of a boundary theory. We use it to argue that the relative entropy of nearby states is given by the relative entropy in the bulk, to leading order in the bulk gravitational coupling. We also argue that the boundary modular flow is dual to the bulk modular flow in the entanglement wedge, with implications for entanglement wedge reconstruction.

The symmetry and simplicity of the laws of physics and the Higgs boson

We describe the theoretical ideas, developed between the 1950s-1970s, which led to the prediction of the Higgs boson, the particle that was discovered in 2012. The forces of nature are based on symmetry principles. We explain the nature of these symmetries through an economic analogy. We also discuss the Higgs mechanism, which is necessary to avoid some of the naive consequences of these symmetries, and to explain various features of elementary particles.

Entropy on a null surface for interacting quantum field theories and the Bousso bound

We study the vacuum-subtracted von Neumann entropy of a segment on a null plane. We argue that for interacting quantum field theories in more than two dimensions, this entropy has a simple expression in terms of the expectation value of the null components of the stress tensor on the null interval. More explicitly $ΔS = 2π\int d^{d-2}y \int_0^1 dx^+\, g(x^+)\, \langle T_{++}\rangle$, where $g(x^+)$ is a theory-dependent function. This function is constrained by general properties of quantum relative entropy. These constraints are enough to extend our recent free field proof of the quantum Bousso bound to the interacting case. This unusual expression for the entropy as the expectation value of an operator implies that the entropy is equal to the modular Hamiltonian, $ΔS = \langle ΔK \rangle $, where $K$ is the operator in the right hand side. We explain how this equality is compatible with a non-zero value for $ΔS$. Finally, we also compute explicitly the function $g(x^+)$ for theories that have a gravity dual.

Exact results for the entanglement entropy and the energy radiated by a quark

We consider a spherical region with a heavy quark in the middle. We compute the extra entanglement entropy due to the presence of a heavy quark both in ${\cal N}=4 $ Super Yang Mills and in the ${\cal N}=6$ Chern-Simons matter theory (ABJM). This is done by relating the computation to the expectation value of a circular Wilson loop and a stress tensor insertion. We also give an exact expression for the Bremsstrahlung function that determines the energy radiated by a quark in the ABJM theory.

Proof of a Quantum Bousso Bound

We prove the generalized Covariant Entropy Bound, $ΔS\leq (A-A')/4G\hbar$, for light-sheets with initial area $A$ and final area $A'$. The entropy $ΔS$ is defined as a difference of von Neumann entropies of an arbitrary state and the vacuum, with both states restricted to the light-sheet under consideration. The proof applies to free fields, in the limit where gravitational backreaction is small. We do not assume the null energy condition. In regions where it is violated, we find that the bound is protected by the defining property of light-sheets: that their null generators are nowhere expanding.

Cool horizons for entangled black holes

General relativity contains solutions in which two distant black holes are connected through the interior via a wormhole, or Einstein-Rosen bridge. These solutions can be interpreted as maximally entangled states of two black holes that form a complex EPR pair. We suggest that similar bridges might be present for more general entangled states. In the case of entangled black holes one can formulate versions of the AMPS(S) paradoxes and resolve them. This suggests possible resolutions of the firewall paradoxes for more general situations.

Generalized gravitational entropy

We consider classical Euclidean gravity solutions with a boundary. The boundary contains a non-contractible circle. These solutions can be interpreted as computing the trace of a density matrix in the full quantum gravity theory, in the classical approximation. When the circle is contractible in the bulk, we argue that the entropy of this density matrix is given by the area of a minimal surface. This is a generalization of the usual black hole entropy formula to euclidean solutions without a Killing vector. A particular example of this set up appears in the computation of the entanglement entropy of a subregion of a field theory with a gravity dual. In this context, the minimal area prescription was proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi. Our arguments explain their conjecture.

preprint2013arXiv

Quantum corrections to holographic entanglement entropy

We consider entanglement entropy in quantum field theories with a gravity dual. In the gravity description, the leading order contribution comes from the area of a minimal surface, as proposed by Ryu-Takayanagi. Here we describe the one loop correction to this formula. The minimal surface divides the bulk into two regions. The bulk loop correction is essentially given by the bulk entanglement entropy between these two bulk regions. We perform some simple checks of this proposal.

The Thermal Free Energy in Large N Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We compute the thermal free energy in large N U(N) Chern-Simons-matter theories with matter fields (scalars and/or fermions) in the fundamental representation, in the large temperature limit. We note that in these theories the eigenvalue distribution of the holonomy of the gauge field along the thermal circle does not localize even at very high temperatures, and this affects the computation significantly. We verify that our results are consistent with the conjectured dualities between Chern-Simons-matter theories with scalar fields and with fermion fields, as well as with the strong-weak coupling duality of the N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory.

Time Evolution of Entanglement Entropy from Black Hole Interiors

We compute the time-dependent entanglement entropy of a CFT which starts in relatively simple initial states. The initial states are the thermofield double for thermal states, dual to eternal black holes, and a particular pure state, dual to a black hole formed by gravitational collapse. The entanglement entropy grows linearly in time. This linear growth is directly related to the growth of the black hole interior measured along "nice" spatial slices. These nice slices probe the spacelike direction in the interior, at a fixed special value of the interior time. In the case of a two-dimensional CFT, we match the bulk and boundary computations of the entanglement entropy. We briefly discuss the long time behavior of various correlators, computed via classical geodesics or surfaces, and point out that their exponential decay comes about for similar reasons. We also present the time evolution of the wavefunction in the tensor network description.

An exact formula for the radiation of a moving quark in N=4 super Yang Mills

We derive an exact formula for the cusp anomalous dimension at small angles. This is done by relating the latter to the computation of certain 1/8 BPS Wilson loops which was performed by supersymmetric localization. This function of the coupling also determines the power emitted by a moving quark in N=4 super Yang Mills, as well as the coefficient of the two point function of the displacement operator on the Wilson loop. By a similar method we compute the near BPS expansion of the generalized cusp anomalous dimension.

Constraining conformal field theories with a slightly broken higher spin symmetry

We consider three dimensional conformal field theories that have a higher spin symmetry that is slightly broken. The theories have a large N limit, in the sense that the operators separate into single trace and multitrace and obey the usual large N factorization properties. We assume that the spectrum of single trace operators is similar to the one that one gets in the Vasiliev theories. Namely, the only single trace operators are the higher spin currents plus an additional scalar. The anomalous dimensions of the higher spin currents are of order 1/N. Using the slightly broken higher spin symmetry we constrain the three point functions of the theories to leading order in N. We show that there are two families of solutions. One family can be realized as a theory of N fermions with an O(N) Chern-Simons gauge field, the other as a N bosons plus the Chern-Simons gauge field. The family of solutions is parametrized by the 't Hooft coupling. At special parity preserving points we get the critical O(N) models, both the Wilson-Fisher one and the Gross-Neveu one. Our analysis also fixes the on shell three point functions of Vasiliev's theory on AdS_4 or dS_4.

Entanglement entropy in de Sitter space

We compute the entanglement entropy for some quantum field theories on de Sitter space. We consider a superhorizon size spherical surface that divides the spatial slice into two regions, with the field theory in the standard vacuum state. First, we study a free massive scalar field. Then, we consider a strongly coupled field theory with a gravity dual, computing the entanglement using the gravity solution. In even dimensions, the interesting piece of the entanglement entropy is proportional to the number of e-foldings that elapsed since the spherical region was inside the horizon. In odd dimensions it is contained in a certain finite piece. In both cases the entanglement captures the long range correlations produced by the expansion.

The cusp anomalous dimension at three loops and beyond

We derive an analytic formula at three loops for the cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_cusp(phi) in N=4 super Yang-Mills. This is done by exploiting the relation of the latter to the Regge limit of massive amplitudes. We comment on the corresponding three loops quark anti-quark potential. Our result also determines a considerable part of the three-loop cusp anomalous dimension in QCD. Finally, we consider a limit in which only ladder diagrams contribute to physical observables. In that limit, a precise agreement with strong coupling is observed.

preprint2012arXiv

The quark anti-quark potential and the cusp anomalous dimension from a TBA equation

We derive a set of integral equations of the TBA type for the generalized cusp anomalous dimension, or the quark antiquark potential on the three sphere, as a function of the angles. We do this by considering a family of local operators on a Wilson loop with charge L. In the large L limit the problem can be solved in terms of a certain boundary reflection matrix. We determine this reflection matrix by using the symmetries and the boundary crossing equation. The cusp is introduced through a relative rotation between the two boundaries. Then the TBA trick of exchanging space and time leads to an exact equation for all values of L. The L=0 case corresponds to the cusped Wilson loop with no operators inserted. We then derive a slightly simplified integral equation which describes the small angle limit. We solve this equation up to three loops in perturbation theory and match the results that were obtained with more direct approaches.

preprint2011arXiv

Constraining conformal field theories with a higher spin symmetry

We study the constraints imposed by the existence of a single higher spin conserved current on a three dimensional conformal field theory. A single higher spin conserved current implies the existence of an infinite number of higher spin conserved currents. The correlation functions of the stress tensor and the conserved currents are then shown to be equal to those of a free field theory. Namely a theory of N free bosons or free fermions. This is an extension of the Coleman-Mandula theorem to CFT's, which do not have a conventional S matrix. We also briefly discuss the case where the higher spin symmetries are "slightly" broken.

Einstein Gravity from Conformal Gravity

We show that that four dimensional conformal gravity plus a simple Neumann boundary condition can be used to get the semiclassical (or tree level) wavefunction of the universe of four dimensional asymptotically de-Sitter or Euclidean anti-de Sitter spacetimes. This simple Neumann boundary condition selects the Einstein solution out of the more numerous solutions of conformal gravity. It thus removes the ghosts of conformal gravity from this computation. In the case of a five dimensional pure gravity theory with a positive cosmological constant we show that the late time superhorizon tree level probability measure, $|Ψ[ g ]|^2$, for its four dimensional spatial slices is given by the action of Euclidean four dimensional conformal gravity.

An Operator Product Expansion for Polygonal null Wilson Loops

We consider polygonal Wilson loops with null edges in conformal gauge theories. We derive an OPE-like expansion when several successive lines of the polygon are becoming aligned. The limit corresponds to a collinear, or multicollinear, limit and we explain the systematics of all the subleading corrections, going beyond the leading terms that were previously considered. These subleading corrections are governed by excitations of high spin operators, or excitations of a flux tube that goes between two Wilson lines. The discussion is valid for any conformal gauge theory, for any coupling and in any dimension. For N=4 super Yang Mills we check this expansion at strong coupling and at two loops at weak coupling . We also make predictions for the remainder function at higher loops. In the process, we also derived a new version for the TBA integral equations that determine the strong coupling answer and present the area as the associated Yang-Yang functional.

Form factors at strong coupling via a Y-system

We compute form factors in planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills at strong coupling. Namely we consider the overlap between an operator insertion and 2n gluons. Through the gauge/string duality these are given by minimal surfaces in AdS space. The surfaces end on an infinite periodic sequence of null segments at the boundary of AdS. We consider surfaces that can be embedded in AdS_3. We derive set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the spectral parameter. These equations are of the form of a Y-system. The integral form of the Y-system has Thermodynamics Bethe Ansatz form. The area is given by the free energy of the TBA system or critical value of Yang-Yang functional. We consider a restricted set of operators which have small conformal dimension.

Thermodynamic Bubble Ansatz

Motivated by the computation of scattering amplitudes at strong coupling, we consider minimal area surfaces in AdS_5 which end on a null polygonal contour at the boundary. We map the classical problem of finding the surface into an SU(4) Hitchin system. The polygon with six edges is the first non-trivial example. For this case, we write an integral equation which determines the area as a function of the shape of the polygon. The equations are identical to those of the Thermodynamics Bethe Ansatz. Moreover, the area is given by the free energy of this TBA system. The high temperature limit of the TBA system can be exactly solved. It leads to an explicit expression for a special class of hexagonal contours.

Y-system for Scattering Amplitudes

We compute N=4 Super Yang Mills planar amplitudes at strong coupling by considering minimal surfaces in AdS_5 space. The surfaces end on a null polygonal contour at the boundary of AdS. We show how to compute the area of the surfaces as a function of the conformal cross ratios characterizing the polygon at the boundary. We reduce the problem to a simple set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the spectral parameter. These equations have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations. The area is the free energy of the TBA system. We consider any number of gluons and in any kinematic configuration.

The unwarped, resolved, deformed conifold: fivebranes and the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler theory

We study a gravity solution corresponding to fivebranes wrapped on the $S^2$ of the resolved conifold. By changing a parameter the solution continuously interpolates between the deformed conifold with flux and the resolved conifold with branes. Therefore, it displays a geometric transition, purely in the supergravity context. The solution is a simple example of torsional geometry and may be thought of as a non-Kähler analog of the conifold. By U-duality transformations we can add D3 brane charge and recover the solution in the form originally derived by Butti et al. This describes the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler theory. Far along the baryonic branch the field theory gives rise to a fuzzy two-sphere. This corresponds to the D5 branes wrapping the two-sphere of the resolved conifold in the gravity solution.

Comments on string theory backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry

We consider non-relativistic conformal quantum mechanical theories that arise by doing discrete light cone quantization of field theories. If the field theory has a gravity dual, then the conformal quantum mechanical theory can have a gravity dual description in a suitable finite temperature and finite density regime. Using this we compute the thermodynamic properties of the system. We give an explicit example where we display both the conformal quantum mechanical theory as well as the gravity dual. We also discuss the string theory embedding of certain backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry that were recently discussed. Using this, we construct finite temperature and finite density solutions, with asymptotic non-relativistic conformal symmetry. In addition, we derive consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations of type IIB supergravity to a five dimensional theory with massive vector fields.

Fermionic T-Duality, Dual Superconformal Symmetry, and the Amplitude/Wilson Loop Connection

We show that tree level superstring theories on certain supersymmetric backgrounds admit a symmetry which we call ``fermionic T-duality''. This is a non-local redefinition of the fermionic worldsheet fields similar to the redefinition we perform on bosonic variables when we do an ordinary T-duality. This duality maps a supersymmetric background to another supersymmetric background with different RR fields and a different dilaton. We show that a certain combination of bosonic and fermionic T-dualities maps the full superstring theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ back to itself in such a way that gluon scattering amplitudes in the original theory map to something very close to Wilson loops in the dual theory. This duality maps the ``dual superconformal symmetry'' of the original theory to the ordinary superconformal symmetry of the dual model. This explains the dual superconformal invariance of planar scattering amplitudes of N=4 super Yang Mills and also sheds some light on the connection between amplitudes and Wilson loops. In the appendix, we propose a simple prescription for open superstring MHV tree amplitudes in a flat background.

Closed strings from decaying D-branes

We compute the emission of closed string radiation from homogeneous rolling tachyons. For an unstable decaying D$p$-brane the radiated energy is infinite to leading order for $p\leq 2$ and finite for $p>2$. The closed string state produced by a decaying brane is closely related to the state produced by D-instantons at a critical Euclidean distance from $t=0$. In the case of a D0 brane one can cutoff this divergence so that we get a finite energy final state which would be the state that the brane decays into.

Comments on gluon scattering amplitudes via AdS/CFT

In this article we consider n gluon color ordered, planar amplitudes in N=4 super Yang Mills at strong 't Hooft coupling. These amplitudes are approximated by classical surfaces in AdS_5 space. We compute the value of the amplitude for a particular kinematic configuration for a large number of gluons and find that the result disagrees with a recent guess for the exact value of the amplitude. Our results are still compatible with a possible relation between amplitudes and Wilson loops. In addition, we also give a prescription for computing processes involving local operators and asymptotic states with a fixed number of gluons. As a byproduct, we also obtain a string theory prescription for computing the dual of the ordinary Wilson loop, Tr P exp[ i\oint A ], with no couplings to the scalars. We also evaluate the quark-antiquark potential at two loops.

On D3-brane Potentials in Compactifications with Fluxes and Wrapped D-branes

We study the potential governing D3-brane motion in a warped throat region of a string compactification with internal fluxes and wrapped D-branes. If the Kahler moduli of the compact space are stabilized by nonperturbative effects, a D3-brane experiences a force due to its interaction with D-branes wrapping certain four-cycles. We compute this interaction, as a correction to the warped four-cycle volume, using explicit throat backgrounds in supergravity. This amounts to a closed-string channel computation of the loop corrections to the nonperturbative superpotential that stabilizes the volume. We demonstrate for warped conical spaces that the superpotential correction is given by the embedding equation specifying the wrapped four-cycle, in agreement with the general form proposed by Ganor. Our approach automatically provides a solution to the problem of defining a holomorphic gauge coupling on wrapped D7-branes in a background with D3-branes. Finally, our results have applications to cosmological inflation models in which the inflaton is modeled by a D3-brane moving in a warped throat.

Bubbling AdS space and 1/2 BPS geometries

We consider all 1/2 BPS excitations of $AdS \times S$ configurations in both type IIB string theory and M-theory. In the dual field theories these excitations are described by free fermions. Configurations which are dual to arbitrary droplets of free fermions in phase space correspond to smooth geometries with no horizons. In fact, the ten dimensional geometry contains a special two dimensional plane which can be identified with the phase space of the free fermion system. The topology of the resulting geometries depends only on the topology of the collection of droplets on this plane. These solutions also give a very explicit realization of the geometric transitions between branes and fluxes. We also describe all 1/2 BPS excitations of plane wave geometries. The problem of finding the explicit geometries is reduced to solving a Laplace (or Toda) equation with simple boundary conditions. We present a large class of explicit solutions. In addition, we are led to a rather general class of $AdS_5$ compactifications of M-theory preserving ${\cal N} =2$ superconformal symmetry. We also find smooth geometries that correspond to various vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. Finally, we present a smooth 1/2 BPS solution of seven dimensional gauged supergravity corresponding to a condensate of one of the charged scalars.

Strings in AdS_3 and the SL(2,R) WZW Model. Part 3: Correlation Functions

We consider correlation functions for string theory on AdS_3. We analyze their singularities and we provide a physical interpretation for them. We explain which worldsheet correlation functions have a sensible physical interpretation in terms of the boundary theory. We consider the operator product expansion of the four point function and we find that it factorizes only if a certain condition is obeyed. We explain that this is the correct physical result. We compute correlation functions involving spectral flowed operators and we derive a constraint on the amount of winding violation.

The supergravity dual of a theory with dynamical supersymmetry breaking

We study the large $N$ limit of a little string theory that reduces in the IR to U(N) ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with Chern Simons coupling $k$. Witten has shown that this field theory preserves supersymmetry if $k\geq N/2$ and he conjectured that it breaks supersymmetry if $k< N/2$. We find a non-singular solution that describes the $k=N/2$ case, which is confining. We argue that increasing $k$ corresponds to adding branes to this solution, in a way that preserves supersymmetry, while decreasing $k$ corresponds to adding anti-branes, and therefore breaking supersymmetry.

1+1 Dimensional NCOS and its U(N) Gauge Theory Dual

We study some aspects of open string theories on D-branes with critical electric fields. We show that the massless open string modes that move in the direction of the electric field decouple. In the 1+1 dimensional case the dual theory is U(N) SYM with electric flux, and the decoupling of massless open strings is dual to the decoupling of the U(1) degrees of freedom. We also show that, if the direction along the electric field is compact, then there are finite energy winding closed string modes. They are dual to Higgs branch excitations of the SYM theory, and their energetics works accordingly. These properties provide new non-trivial evidence for the duality.

Supergravity description of field theories on curved manifolds and a no go theorem

In the first part of this paper we find supergravity solutions corresponding to branes on worldvolumes of the form $R^d \times Σ$ where $Σ$ is a Riemann surface. These theories arise when we wrap branes on holomorphic Riemann surfaces inside $K3$ or CY manifolds. In some cases the theory at low energies is a conformal field theory with two less dimensions. We find some non-singular supersymmetric compactifications of M-theory down to $AdS_5$. We also propose a criterion for permissible singularities in supergravity solutions. In the second part of this paper, which can be read independently of the first, we show that there are no non-singular Randall-Sundrum or de-Sitter compactifications for large class of gravity theories.

The Operator Product Expansion for Wilson Loops and Surfaces in the Large N Limit

The operator product expansion for ``small'' Wilson loops in {\cal N}=4, d=4 SYM is studied. The OPE coefficients are calculated in the large N and g_{YM}^2 N limit by exploiting the AdS/CFT correspondence. We also consider Wilson surfaces in the (0,2), d=6 superconformal theory. In this case, we find that the UV divergent terms include a term proportional to the rigid string action.

Black Hole Entropy in M-Theory

Extremal black holes in M-theory compactification on $M\times S^1$ are microscopically represented by fivebranes wrapping $P\times S^1$, where $M$ is a Calabi-Yau threefold and $P$ is a four-cycle in $M$. Additional spacetime charges arise from momentum around the $S^1$ and expectation values for the self-dual three-form field strength in the fivebrane. The microscopic entropy of the fivebrane as a function of all the charges is determined from a two-dimensional $(0,4)$ sigma model whose target space includes the fivebrane moduli space. This entropy is compared to the macroscopic formula. Precise agreement is found for both the tree-level and one-loop expressions.
