An Operator Product Expansion for Form Factors III. Finite Coupling and Multi-Particle Contributions

Form factors in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory have a dual description in terms of periodic Wilson loops. This duality maps the multi-collinear expansion of the former to an operator product expansion of the latter. The coefficients of this expansion are decomposed in terms of several elementary building blocks and can be determined at finite 't Hooft coupling using bootstrap and integrability techniques. Some of these blocks are known from an analogous expansion of scattering amplitudes. In addition to these, the expansion for form factors includes a new type of building block, called {\it form factor transitions}, that encode information about the local operator. In the present paper, we consider the form factor of the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet. We bootstrap the corresponding form factor transitions of two-particle flux-tube states and use them to predict the leading term in the collinear expansion at finite coupling. The transitions we find can be expressed in terms of a quantity that previously appeared in a seemingly unrelated context, namely the octagon kernel. Lastly, we use a factorized ansatz to determine the multi-particle form factor transitions at finite coupling, which we use to predict the first subleading term in the collinear expansion. A perfect match is found between our predictions and the available perturbative data.

An Operator Product Expansion for Form Factors II. Born level

Form factors in planar N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory admit a type of non-perturbative operator product expansion (OPE), as we have recently shown in arXiv:2009.11297. This expansion is based on a decomposition of the dual periodic Wilson loop into elementary building blocks: the known pentagon transitions and a new object that we call form factor transition, which encodes the information about the local operator. In this paper, we compute the two-particle form factor transitions for the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet at Born level; they yield the leading contribution to the OPE. To achieve this, we explicitly construct the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov two-particle singlet states. The resulting transitions are then used to test the OPE against known perturbative data and to make higher-loop predictions.

An Analytical Toolkit for the S-matrix Bootstrap

We revisit analytical methods for constraining the nonperturbative $S$-matrix of unitary, relativistic, gapped theories in $d \geq 3$ spacetime dimensions. We assume extended analyticity of the two-to-two scattering amplitude and use it together with elastic unitarity to develop two natural expansions of the amplitude. One is the threshold (non-relativistic) expansion and the other is the large spin expansion. The two are related by the Froissart-Gribov inversion formula. When combined with crossing and a local bound on the discontinuity of the amplitude, this allows us to constrain scattering at finite energy and spin in terms of the low-energy parameters measured in the experiment. Finally, we discuss the modern numerical approach to the $S$-matrix bootstrap and how it can be improved based on the results of our analysis.

Colour-Twist Operators I: Spectrum and Wave Functions

We introduce a new class of operators in any theory with a 't Hooft large-$N$ limit that we call colour-twist operators. They are defined by twisting the colour-trace with a global symmetry transformation and are continuously linked to standard, un-twisted single-trace operators. In particular, correlation functions between operators that are twisted by an R-symmetry of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM extend those in the $γ$-deformed theory. The most general deformation also breaks the Lorentz symmetry but preserves integrability in the examples we consider. In this paper, we focus on colour-twist operators in the fishnet model. We exemplify our approach for the simplest colour-twist operators with one and two scalar fields, which we study non-perturbatively using field-theoretical as well as integrability methods, finding a perfect match. We also propose the quantisation condition for the Baxter equation appearing in the integrability calculation in the fishnet model. The results of this paper constitute a crucial step towards building the separation of variable construction for the correlation functions by means of the Quantum Spectral Curve approach.

The Holographic Dual of Strongly γ-deformed N=4 SYM Theory: Derivation, Generalization, Integrability and Discrete Reparametrization Symmetry

Recently, we constructed the first-principle derivation of the holographic dual of N=4 SYM in the double-scaled $γ$-deformed limit directly from the CFT side. The dual fishchain model is a novel integrable chain of particles in AdS5. It can be viewed as a discretized string and revives earlier string-bit approaches. The original derivation was restricted to the operators built out of one of two types of scalar fields. In this paper, we extend our results to the general operators having any number of scalars of both types, except for a very special case when their numbers are equal. Interestingly, the extended model reveals a new discrete reparametrization symmetry of the "world-sheet", preserving all integrals of motion. We use integrability to formulate a closed system of equations, which allows us to solve for the spectrum of the model in full generality, and present non-perturbative numerical results. We show that our results are in agreement with the Asymptotic Bethe Ansatz of the fishnet model up to the wrapping order at weak coupling.

OPE for all Helicity Amplitudes II. Form Factors and Data Analysis

We present the general flux tube integrand for MHV and non-MHV amplitudes, in planar N = 4 SYM theory, up to a group theoretical rational factor. We find that the MHV and non-MHV cases only differ by simple form factors which we derive. This information allows us to run the operator product expansion program for all sorts of non-MHV amplitudes and to test the recently proposed map with the so called charged pentagons transitions. Perfect agreement is found, on a large sample of non-MHV amplitudes, with the perturbative data available in the literature.

Adjoint BFKL at finite coupling: a short-cut from the collinear limit

In the high energy Regge limit, the six gluons scattering amplitude is controlled by the adjoint BFKL eigenvalue and impact factor. In this paper we determine these two building blocks at any value of the 't Hooft coupling in planar $\cal{N}$=4 SYM theory. This is achieved by means of analytic continuations from the collinear limit, where similar all loops expressions were recently established. We check our predictions against all available data at weak and strong coupling.

On the collinear limit of scattering amplitudes at strong coupling

In this letter we consider the collinear limit of gluon scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory at strong coupling. We argue that in this limit scattering amplitudes map into correlators of twist fields in the two dimensional non-linear O(6) sigma model, similar to those appearing in recent studies of entanglement entropy. We provide evidence for this assertion by combining the intuition springing from the string worldsheet picture and the predictions coming from the OPE series. One of the main implications of these considerations is that scattering amplitudes receive equally important contributions at strong coupling from both the minimal string area and its fluctuations in the sphere.

OPE for all Helicity Amplitudes

We extend the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) for scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM to account for all possible helicities of the external states. This is done by constructing a simple map between helicity configurations and so-called charged pentagon transitions. These OPE building blocks are generalizations of the bosonic pentagons entering MHV amplitudes and they can be bootstrapped at finite coupling from the integrable dynamics of the color flux tube. A byproduct of our map is a simple realization of parity in the super Wilson loop picture.

Space-time S-matrix and Flux tube S-matrix II. Extracting and Matching Data

We elaborate on a non-perturbative formulation of scattering amplitudes/null polygonal Wilson loops in planar N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory. The construction is based on a decomposition of the Wilson loop into elementary building blocks named pentagon transitions. Our discussion expands on a previous letter of the authors where these transitions were introduced and analyzed for the so-called gluonic excitations. In this paper we revisit these transitions and extend the analysis to the sector of scalar excitations. We restrict ourselves to the single particle transitions and bootstrap their finite coupling expressions using a set of axioms. Besides these considerations, the main focus of the paper is on the extraction of perturbative data from scattering amplitudes at weak coupling and its comparison against the proposed pentagon transitions. We present several tests for both the hexagon and heptagon (MHV and NMHV) amplitudes up to two- and three-loop orders. In attached notebooks we provide explicit higher-loop predictions obtained from our method.

Space-time S-matrix and Flux-tube S-matrix III. The two-particle contributions

We consider light-like Wilson loops with hexagonal geometry in the planar limit of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory. Within the Operator-Product-Expansion framework these loops receive contributions from all states that can propagate on top of the colour flux tube sourced by any two opposite edges of the loops. Of particular interest are the two-particle contributions. They comprise virtual effects like the propagation of a pair of scalars, fermions, and gluons, on top of the flux tube. Each one of them is thoroughly discussed in this paper. Our main result is the prediction of all the twist-2 corrections to the expansion of the dual 6-gluons MHV amplitude in the near-collinear limit at finite coupling. At weak coupling, our result was recently used by Dixon, Drummond, Duhr and Pennington to predict the full amplitude at four loops. At strong coupling, it allows us to make contact with the classical string description and to recover the (previously elusive) AdS(3) mode from the continuum of two-fermion states. More generally, the two-particle contributions serve as an exemplar for all the multi-particle corrections.

Space-time S-matrix and Flux-tube S-matrix IV. Gluons and Fusion

We analyze the pentagon transitions involving arbitrarily many flux-tube gluonic excitations and bound states thereof in planar N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory. We derive all-loop expressions for all these transitions by factorization and fusion of the elementary transitions for the lightest gluonic excitations conjectured in a previous paper. We apply the proposals so obtained to the computation of MHV and NMHV scattering amplitudes at any loop order and find perfect agreement with available perturbative data up to four loops.

Space-time S-matrix and Flux-tube S-matrix at Finite Coupling

We propose a non-perturbative formulation of planar scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM or, equivalently, polygonal Wilson loops. The construction is based on the OPE approach and introduces a new decomposition of the Wilson loop in terms of fundamental building blocks named Pentagon transitions. These transitions satisfy a simple relation to the worldsheet S-matrix on top of the so called Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov vacuum which allows us to bootstrap them at any value of the coupling. In this letter we present a subsector of the full solution to scattering amplitudes which we call the gluonic part. We match our results with both weak and strong coupling data available in the literature. For example, the strong coupling Y-system can be understood in this approach.

An exact formula for the radiation of a moving quark in N=4 super Yang Mills

We derive an exact formula for the cusp anomalous dimension at small angles. This is done by relating the latter to the computation of certain 1/8 BPS Wilson loops which was performed by supersymmetric localization. This function of the coupling also determines the power emitted by a moving quark in N=4 super Yang Mills, as well as the coefficient of the two point function of the displacement operator on the Wilson loop. By a similar method we compute the near BPS expansion of the generalized cusp anomalous dimension.

Analytic Solution of Bremsstrahlung TBA

We consider the quark--anti-quark potential on the three sphere or the generalized cusp anomalous dimension in planar N=4 SYM. We concentrate on the vacuum potential in the near BPS limit with $L$ units of R-charge. Equivalently, we study the anomalous dimension of a super-Wilson loop with L local fields inserted at a cusp. The system is described by a recently proposed infinite set of non-linear integral equations of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) type. That system of TBA equations is very similar to the one of the spectral problem but simplifies a bit in the near BPS limit. Using techniques based on the Y-system of functional equations we first reduced the infinite system of TBA equations to a Finite set of Nonlinear Integral Equations (FiNLIE). Then we solve the FiNLIE system analytically, obtaining a simple analytic result for the potential! Surprisingly, we find that the system has equivalent descriptions in terms of an effective Baxter equation and in terms of a matrix model. At L=0, our result matches the one obtained before using localization techniques. At all other L's, the result is new. Having a new parameter, L, allows us to take the large L classical limit. We use the matrix model description to solve the classical limit and match the result with a string theory computation. Moreover, we find that the classical string algebraic curve matches the algebraic curve arising from the matrix model.

From Polygon Wilson Loops to Spin Chains and Back

Null Polygon Wilson Loops (WL) in N=4 SYM can be computed using the Operator Product Expansion in terms of a transition amplitude on top of a color flux tube (FT). That picture is valid at any value of the 't Hooft coupling. So far it has been efficiently used at weak coupling (WC) in cases where only a single particle is flowing. At any finite value of the coupling however, an infinite number of particles are flowing on top of the color FT. A major open problem in this approach was how to deal with generic multi-particle states at WC. In this paper we study the propagation of any number of FT excitations at WC. We do this by first mapping the WL into a sum of two point functions of local operators. This map allows us to translate the integrability techniques developed for the spectrum problem back to the WL. E.g., the FT Hamiltonian can be represented as a simple kernel acting on the loop. Having an explicit representation for the FT Hamiltonian allows us to treat any number of particles on an equal footing. We use it to bootstrap some simple cases where two particles are flowing, dual to N2MHV amplitudes. The FT is integrable and therefore has other (infinite set of) conserved charges. The generating function of conserved charges is constructed from the monodromy (M) matrix between sides of the polygon. We compute it for some simple examples at leading order at WC. At strong coupling (SC), these Ms were the main ingredients of the Y-system solution. To connect the WC and SC computations, we study a case where an infinite number of particles are propagating already at leading order at WC. We obtain a precise match between the WC and SC Ms. That match is the WL analogue of the well known Frolov-Tseytlin limit where the WC and SC descriptions become identical. Hopefully, putting the WC and SC descriptions on the same footing is the first step in understanding the all loop structure.

Multichannel Conformal Blocks for Polygon Wilson Loops

We introduce the notion of Multichannel Conformal Blocks relevant for the Operator Product Expansion for Null Polygon Wilson loops with more than six edges. As an application of these, we decompose the one loop heptagon Wilson loop and predict the value of its two loop OPE discontinuities. At the functional level, the OPE discontinuities are roughly half of the full result. Using symbols they suffice to predict the full two loop result. We also present several new predictions for the heptagon result at any loop order.

The cusp anomalous dimension at three loops and beyond

We derive an analytic formula at three loops for the cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_cusp(phi) in N=4 super Yang-Mills. This is done by exploiting the relation of the latter to the Regge limit of massive amplitudes. We comment on the corresponding three loops quark anti-quark potential. Our result also determines a considerable part of the three-loop cusp anomalous dimension in QCD. Finally, we consider a limit in which only ladder diagrams contribute to physical observables. In that limit, a precise agreement with strong coupling is observed.

The quark anti-quark potential and the cusp anomalous dimension from a TBA equation

We derive a set of integral equations of the TBA type for the generalized cusp anomalous dimension, or the quark antiquark potential on the three sphere, as a function of the angles. We do this by considering a family of local operators on a Wilson loop with charge L. In the large L limit the problem can be solved in terms of a certain boundary reflection matrix. We determine this reflection matrix by using the symmetries and the boundary crossing equation. The cusp is introduced through a relative rotation between the two boundaries. Then the TBA trick of exchanging space and time leads to an exact equation for all values of L. The L=0 case corresponds to the cusped Wilson loop with no operators inserted. We then derive a slightly simplified integral equation which describes the small angle limit. We solve this equation up to three loops in perturbation theory and match the results that were obtained with more direct approaches.

OPE for Super Loops

We extend the Operator Product Expansion for Null Polygon Wilson loops to the Mason-Skinner-Caron-Huot super loop, dual to non MHV gluon amplitudes. We explain how the known tree level amplitudes can be promoted into an infinite amount of data at any loop order in the OPE picture. As an application, we re-derive all one loop NMHV six gluon amplitudes by promoting their tree level expressions. We also present some new all loops predictions for these amplitudes.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability

We use Integrability techniques to compute structure constants in N=4 SYM to leading order. Three closed spin chains, which represent the single trace gauge-invariant operators in N=4 SYM, are cut into six open chains which are then sewed back together into some nice pants, the three-point function. The algebraic and coordinate Bethe ansatz tools necessary for this task are reviewed. Finally, we discuss the classical limit of our results, anticipating some predictions for quasi-classical string correlators in terms of algebraic curves.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability II. Weak/strong coupling match

We compute three-point functions of single trace operators in planar N=4 SYM. We consider the limit where one of the operators is much smaller than the other two. We find a precise match between weak and strong coupling in the Frolov-Tseytlin classical limit for a very general class of classical solutions. To achieve this match we clarify the issue of back-reaction and identify precisely which three-point functions are captured by a classical computation.

Tailoring Three-Point Functions and Integrability III. Classical Tunneling

We compute three-point functions between one large classical operator and two large BPS operators at weak coupling. We consider operators made out of the scalars of N=4 SYM, dual to strings moving in the sphere. The three-point function exponentiates and can be thought of as a classical tunneling process in which the classical string-like operator decays into two classical BPS states. From an Integrability/Condensed Matter point of view, we simplified inner products of spin chain Bethe states in a classical limit corresponding to long wavelength excitations above the ferromagnetic vacuum. As a by-product we solved a new long-range Ising model in the thermodynamic limit.

An Operator Product Expansion for Polygonal null Wilson Loops

We consider polygonal Wilson loops with null edges in conformal gauge theories. We derive an OPE-like expansion when several successive lines of the polygon are becoming aligned. The limit corresponds to a collinear, or multicollinear, limit and we explain the systematics of all the subleading corrections, going beyond the leading terms that were previously considered. These subleading corrections are governed by excitations of high spin operators, or excitations of a flux tube that goes between two Wilson lines. The discussion is valid for any conformal gauge theory, for any coupling and in any dimension. For N=4 super Yang Mills we check this expansion at strong coupling and at two loops at weak coupling . We also make predictions for the remainder function at higher loops. In the process, we also derived a new version for the TBA integral equations that determine the strong coupling answer and present the area as the associated Yang-Yang functional.

Y-system for Scattering Amplitudes

We compute N=4 Super Yang Mills planar amplitudes at strong coupling by considering minimal surfaces in AdS_5 space. The surfaces end on a null polygonal contour at the boundary of AdS. We show how to compute the area of the surfaces as a function of the conformal cross ratios characterizing the polygon at the boundary. We reduce the problem to a simple set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the spectral parameter. These equations have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations. The area is the free energy of the TBA system. We consider any number of gluons and in any kinematic configuration.
