Energy correlators in four-dimensional gravity

We investigate energy correlators in four-dimensional gravitational theories, which provide a simple class of infrared-finite observables. We compute the one- and two-point energy correlators at one loop in $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity and in pure Einstein gravity, with particular emphasis on the contact terms arising from the interplay between virtual corrections and real emissions. We explicitly demonstrate the cancellation of infrared divergences and verify the Ward identities associated with energy-momentum conservation. In the back-to-back limit, we derive an all-order expression for the energy-energy correlator, showing that it is governed by universal soft-graviton dynamics. We further introduce a particularly simple beam-averaged energy-energy correlator and compute it in different gravitational theories, including tree-level string theory. The resulting correlators exhibit analyticity and polynomial boundedness, allowing for the formulation of dispersion relations, which we explore. Finally, we discuss additional singularities of the gravitational energy correlators, absent in QCD, that originate from the long-range nature of the gravitational interactions.

Gravitational Effective Field Theory Islands, Low-Spin Dominance, and the Four-Graviton Amplitude

We analyze constraints from perturbative unitarity and crossing on the leading contributions of higher-dimension operators to the four-graviton amplitude in four spacetime dimensions, including constraints that follow from distinct helicity configurations. We focus on the leading-order effect due to exchange by massive degrees of freedom which makes the amplitudes of interest infrared finite. In particular, we place a bound on the coefficient of the $R^3$ operator that corrects the graviton three-point amplitude in terms of the $R^4$ coefficient. To test the constraints we obtain nontrivial effective field-theory data by computing and taking the large-mass expansion of the one-loop minimally-coupled four-graviton amplitude with massive particles up to spin 2 circulating in the loop. Remarkably, we observe that the leading EFT coefficients obtained from both string and one-loop field-theory amplitudes lie in small islands. The shape and location of the islands can be derived from the dispersive representation for the Wilson coefficients using crossing and assuming that the lowest-spin spectral densities are the largest. Our analysis suggests that the Wilson coefficients of weakly-coupled gravitational physical theories are much more constrained than indicated by bounds arising from dispersive considerations of $2 \to 2$ scattering. The one-loop four-graviton amplitudes used to obtain the EFT data are computed using modern amplitude methods, including generalized unitarity, supersymmetric decompositions and the double copy.

Gravitational orbits, double-twist mirage, and many-body scars

We explore the implications of stable gravitational orbits around an AdS black hole for the boundary conformal field theory. The orbits are long-lived states that eventually decay due to gravitational radiation and tunneling. They appear as narrow resonances in the heavy-light OPE when the spectrum becomes effectively continuous due to the presence of the black hole horizon. Alternatively, they can be identified with quasi-normal modes with small imaginary part in the thermal two-point function. The two pictures are related via the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis. When the decay effects can be neglected the orbits appear as a discrete family of double-twist operators. We investigate the connection between orbits, quasi-normal modes, and double-twist operators in detail. Using the corrected Bohr-Sommerfeld formula for quasi-normal modes, we compute the anomalous dimension of double-twist operators. We compare our results to the prediction of the light-cone bootstrap, finding perfect agreement where the results overlap. We also compute the orbit decay time due to scalar radiation and compare it to the tunneling rate. Perturbatively in spin, in the light-cone bootstrap framework double-twist operators appear as a small fraction of the Hilbert space which violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, a phenomenon known as many-body scars. Nonperturbatively in spin, the double-twist operators become long-lived states that eventually thermalize. We briefly discuss the connection between perturbative scars in holographic theories and known examples of scars in the condensed matter literature.

On the light-ray algebra in conformal field theories

We analyze the commutation relations of light-ray operators in conformal field theories. We first establish the algebra of light-ray operators built out of higher spin currents in free CFTs and find explicit expressions for the corresponding structure constants. The resulting algebras are remarkably similar to the generalized Zamolodchikov's $W_\infty$ algebra in a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We then compute the commutator of generalized energy flow operators in a generic, interacting CFTs in $d>2$. We show that it receives contribution from the energy flow operator itself, as well as from the light-ray operators built out of scalar primary operators of dimension $Δ\leq d-2$, that are present in the OPE of two stress-energy tensors. Commutators of light-ray operators considered in the present paper lead to CFT sum rules which generalize the superconvergence relations and naturally connect to the dispersive sum rules, both of which have been studied recently.

Snowmass White Paper: The Analytic Conformal Bootstrap

The analytic conformal bootstrap is an array of techniques to characterize, constrain, and solve strongly interacting quantum field theories using symmetries, causality, unitarity, and other general principles. In the last decade, bolstered by the development of new Lorentzian methods, it has been used to solve conformal field theories at large spin; to place bounds on energy distributions, event shapes, operator product coefficients, and other observables; and to understand aspects of quantum gravity in anti-de Sitter space. We review these advances and highlight several promising areas for future exploration. Targets include developing new methods to close the gap between numerical and analytic bounds, extending the bootstrap beyond conformal fixed points, applications to quantum gravity and cosmology, and building on ties to condensed matter theory and mathematics.

Generalizing event shapes: In search of lost collider time

We introduce a new class of collider-type observables in conformal field theories which we call generalized event shapes. They are defined as matrix elements of light-ray operators that are sensitive to the longitudinal, or time-dependent, structure of the state produced in the collision. Generalized event shapes can be studied using both correlation functions and scattering amplitudes. They are infrared finite and smoothly transit over to the familiar event shapes. We compute them in planar ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at weak and strong coupling, and study their physical properties. We show that at strong coupling both the stringy and quantum-gravitational corrections to the energy-energy correlation exhibit longitudinal broadening that manifests itself through the presence of long-time tails in the energy flux measured by the detectors.

An Analytical Toolkit for the S-matrix Bootstrap

We revisit analytical methods for constraining the nonperturbative $S$-matrix of unitary, relativistic, gapped theories in $d \geq 3$ spacetime dimensions. We assume extended analyticity of the two-to-two scattering amplitude and use it together with elastic unitarity to develop two natural expansions of the amplitude. One is the threshold (non-relativistic) expansion and the other is the large spin expansion. The two are related by the Froissart-Gribov inversion formula. When combined with crossing and a local bound on the discontinuity of the amplitude, this allows us to constrain scattering at finite energy and spin in terms of the low-energy parameters measured in the experiment. Finally, we discuss the modern numerical approach to the $S$-matrix bootstrap and how it can be improved based on the results of our analysis.

Nonperturbative Mellin Amplitudes: Existence, Properties, Applications

We argue that nonperturbative CFT correlation functions admit a Mellin amplitude representation. Perturbative Mellin representation readily follows. We discuss the main properties of nonperturbative CFT Mellin amplitudes: subtractions, analyticity, unitarity, Polyakov conditions and polynomial boundedness at infinity. Mellin amplitudes are particularly simple for large N CFTs and 2D rational CFTs. We discuss these examples to illustrate our general discussion. We consider subtracted dispersion relations for Mellin amplitudes and use them to derive bootstrap bounds on CFTs. We combine crossing, dispersion relations and Polyakov conditions to write down a set of extremal functionals that act on the OPE data. We check these functionals using the known 3d Ising model OPE data and other known bootstrap constraints. We then apply them to holographic theories.

The light-ray OPE and conformal colliders

We derive a nonperturbative, convergent operator product expansion (OPE) for null-integrated operators on the same null plane in a CFT. The objects appearing in the expansion are light-ray operators, whose matrix elements can be computed by the generalized Lorentzian inversion formula. For example, a product of average null energy (ANEC) operators has an expansion in the light-ray operators that appear in the stress-tensor OPE. An important application is to collider event shapes. The light-ray OPE gives a nonperturbative expansion for event shapes in special functions that we call celestial blocks. As an example, we apply the celestial block expansion to energy-energy correlators in N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. Using known OPE data, we find perfect agreement with previous results both at weak and strong coupling, and make new predictions at weak coupling through 4 loops (NNNLO).

Modular Invariance, Tauberian Theorems, and Microcanonical Entropy

We analyze modular invariance drawing inspiration from tauberian theorems. Given a modular invariant partition function with a positive spectral density, we derive lower and upper bounds on the number of operators within a given energy interval. They are most revealing at high energies. In this limit we rigorously derive the Cardy formula for the microcanonical entropy together with optimal error estimates for various widths of the averaging energy shell. We identify a new universal contribution to the microcanonical entropy controlled by the central charge and the width of the shell. We derive an upper bound on the spacings between Virasoro primaries. Analogous results are obtained in holographic 2d CFTs. We also study partition functions with a UV cutoff. Control over error estimates allows us to probe operators beyond the unity in the modularity condition. We check our results in the 2d Ising model and the Monster CFT and find perfect agreement.

Analytic Euclidean Bootstrap

We solve crossing equations analytically in the deep Euclidean regime. Large scaling dimension $Δ$ tails of the weighted spectral density of primary operators of given spin in one channel are matched to the Euclidean OPE data in the other channel. Subleading $1\over Δ$ tails are systematically captured by including more operators in the Euclidean OPE in the dual channel. We use dispersion relations for conformal partial waves in the complex $Δ$ plane, the Lorentzian inversion formula and complex tauberian theorems to derive this result. We check our formulas in a few examples (for CFTs and scattering amplitudes) and find perfect agreement. Moreover, in these examples we observe that the large $Δ$ expansion works very well already for small $Δ\sim 1$. We make predictions for the 3d Ising model. Our analysis of dispersion relations via complex tauberian theorems is very general and could be useful in many other contexts.

An Algebraic Approach to the Analytic Bootstrap

We develop an algebraic approach to the analytic bootstrap in CFTs. By acting with the Casimir operator on the crossing equation we map the problem of doing large spin sums to any desired order to the problem of solving a set of recursion relations. We compute corrections to the anomalous dimension of large spin operators due to the exchange of a primary and its descendants in the crossed channel and show that this leads to a Borel-summable expansion. We analyse higher order corrections to the microscopic CFT data in the direct channel and its matching to infinite towers of operators in the crossed channel. We apply this method to the critical $O(N)$ model. At large $N$ we reproduce the first few terms in the large spin expansion of the known two-loop anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents in the traceless symmetric representation of $O(N)$ and make further predictions. At small $N$ we present the results for the truncated large spin expansion series of anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents.

Conformal Bootstrap With Slightly Broken Higher Spin Symmetry

We consider conformal field theories with slightly broken higher spin symmetry in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. We analyze the crossing equation in the double light-cone limit and solve for the anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents $γ_s$ with large spin $s$. The result depends on the symmetries and the spectrum of the unperturbed conformal field theory. We reproduce all known results and make further predictions. In particular we make a prediction for the anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents in the 3d Ising model.

Looking for a bulk point

We consider Lorentzian correlators of local operators. In perturbation theory, singularities occur when we can draw a position-space Landau diagram with null lines. In theories with gravity duals, we can also draw Landau diagrams in the bulk. We argue that certain singularities can arise only from bulk diagrams, not from boundary diagrams. As has been previously observed, these singularities are a clear diagnostic of bulk locality. We analyze some properties of these perturbative singularities and discuss their relation to the OPE and the dimensions of double-trace operators. In the exact nonperturbative theory, we expect no singularity at these locations. We prove this statement in 1+1 dimensions by CFT methods.

Scale-invariant breaking of conformal symmetry

Known examples of unitary relativistic scale but not conformal-invariant field theories (SFTs) can be embedded into conventional conformal field theories (CFTs). We show that any SFT which is a subsector of a unitary CFT is a free theory. Our discussion applies to an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions and explains triviality of known SFTs in four spacetime dimensions. We comment on examples of unitary SFTs which are not captured by our construction.

Gravitational Memory, BMS Supertranslations and Soft Theorems

The transit of a gravitating radiation pulse past arrays of detectors stationed near future null infinity in the vacuum is considered. It is shown that the relative positions and clock times of the detectors before and after the radiation transit differ by a BMS supertranslation. An explicit expression for the supertranslation in terms of moments of the radiation energy flux is given. The relative spatial displacement found for a pair of nearby detectors reproduces the well-known and potentially measurable gravitational memory effect. The displacement memory formula is shown to be equivalent to Weinberg's formula for soft graviton production.

Convexity and Liberation at Large Spin

We consider several aspects of unitary higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). We first study massive deformations that trigger a flow to a gapped phase. Deep inelastic scattering in the gapped phase leads to a convexity property of dimensions of spinning operators of the original CFT. We further investigate the dimensions of spinning operators via the crossing equations in the light-cone limit. We find that, in a sense, CFTs become free at large spin and 1/s is a weak coupling parameter. The spectrum of CFTs enjoys additivity: if two twists tau_1, tau_2 appear in the spectrum, there are operators whose twists are arbitrarily close to tau_1+tau_2. We characterize how tau_1+tau_2 is approached at large spin by solving the crossing equations analytically. We find the precise form of the leading correction, including the prefactor. We compare with examples where these observables were computed in perturbation theory, or via gauge-gravity duality, and find complete agreement. The crossing equations show that certain operators have a convex spectrum in twist space. We also observe a connection between convexity and the ratio of dimension to charge. Applications include the 3d Ising model, theories with a gravity dual, SCFTs, and patterns of higher spin symmetry breaking.

On Conformal Field Theories With Extremal a/c Values

Unitary conformal field theories (CFTs) are believed to have positive (non-negative) energy correlators. Energy correlators are universal observables in higher-dimensional CFTs built out of integrated Wightman functions of the stress-energy tensor. We analyze energy correlators in parity invariant four-dimensional CFTs. The goal is to use the positivity of energy correlators to further constrain unitary CFTs. It is known that the positivity of the simplest one-point energy correlator implies that 1/3 <= a/c <= 31/18 where a and c are the Weyl anomaly coefficients. We use the positivity of higher point energy correlators to show that CFTs with extremal values of a/c have trivial scattering observables. More precisely, for a/c=1/3 and a/c=31/18 all energy correlators are fixed to be the ones of the free boson and the free vector theory correspondingly. Similarly, we show that the positivity and finiteness of energy correlators together imply that the three-point function of the stress tensor in a CFT cannot be proportional to the one in the theory of free boson, free fermion or free vector field.

A note on three-point functions of conserved currents

We find the form of three-point correlation functions of traceless symmetric conserved currents of arbitrary spin in d-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). These are fixed up to several constants by conformal symmetry and current conservation conditions. We present generating functionals for all structures in arbitrary d. In even dimensions we present an interpretation for each structure in terms of the corresponding free field. In odd dimensions d>3 an infinite number of structures is found which are not generated by known CFTs.

Constraining conformal field theories with a slightly broken higher spin symmetry

We consider three dimensional conformal field theories that have a higher spin symmetry that is slightly broken. The theories have a large N limit, in the sense that the operators separate into single trace and multitrace and obey the usual large N factorization properties. We assume that the spectrum of single trace operators is similar to the one that one gets in the Vasiliev theories. Namely, the only single trace operators are the higher spin currents plus an additional scalar. The anomalous dimensions of the higher spin currents are of order 1/N. Using the slightly broken higher spin symmetry we constrain the three point functions of the theories to leading order in N. We show that there are two families of solutions. One family can be realized as a theory of N fermions with an O(N) Chern-Simons gauge field, the other as a N bosons plus the Chern-Simons gauge field. The family of solutions is parametrized by the 't Hooft coupling. At special parity preserving points we get the critical O(N) models, both the Wilson-Fisher one and the Gross-Neveu one. Our analysis also fixes the on shell three point functions of Vasiliev's theory on AdS_4 or dS_4.

Constraining conformal field theories with a higher spin symmetry

We study the constraints imposed by the existence of a single higher spin conserved current on a three dimensional conformal field theory. A single higher spin conserved current implies the existence of an infinite number of higher spin conserved currents. The correlation functions of the stress tensor and the conserved currents are then shown to be equal to those of a free field theory. Namely a theory of N free bosons or free fermions. This is an extension of the Coleman-Mandula theorem to CFT's, which do not have a conventional S matrix. We also briefly discuss the case where the higher spin symmetries are "slightly" broken.

Form factors at strong coupling via a Y-system

We compute form factors in planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills at strong coupling. Namely we consider the overlap between an operator insertion and 2n gluons. Through the gauge/string duality these are given by minimal surfaces in AdS space. The surfaces end on an infinite periodic sequence of null segments at the boundary of AdS. We consider surfaces that can be embedded in AdS_3. We derive set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the spectral parameter. These equations are of the form of a Y-system. The integral form of the Y-system has Thermodynamics Bethe Ansatz form. The area is given by the free energy of the TBA system or critical value of Yang-Yang functional. We consider a restricted set of operators which have small conformal dimension.
