COMPASS: High-Efficiency Deep Image Compression with Arbitrary-scale Spatial Scalability

Recently, neural network (NN)-based image compression studies have actively been made and has shown impressive performance in comparison to traditional methods. However, most of the works have focused on non-scalable image compression (single-layer coding) while spatially scalable image compression has drawn less attention although it has many applications. In this paper, we propose a novel NN-based spatially scalable image compression method, called COMPASS, which supports arbitrary-scale spatial scalability. Our proposed COMPASS has a very flexible structure where the number of layers and their respective scale factors can be arbitrarily determined during inference. To reduce the spatial redundancy between adjacent layers for arbitrary scale factors, our COMPASS adopts an inter-layer arbitrary scale prediction method, called LIFF, based on implicit neural representation. We propose a combined RD loss function to effectively train multiple layers. Experimental results show that our COMPASS achieves BD-rate gain of -58.33% and -47.17% at maximum compared to SHVC and the state-of-the-art NN-based spatially scalable image compression method, respectively, for various combinations of scale factors. Our COMPASS also shows comparable or even better coding efficiency than the single-layer coding for various scale factors.

A Penalized Functional Linear Cox Regression Model for Spatially-defined Environmental Exposure with an Estimated Buffer Distance

In environmental health research, it is of interest to understand the effect of the neighborhood environment on health. Researchers have shown a protective association between green space around a person's residential address and depression outcomes. In measuring exposure to green space, distance buffers are often used. However, buffer distances differ across studies. Typically, the buffer distance is determined by researchers a priori. It is unclear how to identify an appropriate buffer distance for exposure assessment. To address geographic uncertainty problem for exposure assessment, we present a domain selection algorithm based on the penalized functional linear Cox regression model. The theoretical properties of our proposed method are studied and simulation studies are conducted to evaluate finite sample performances of our method. The proposed method is illustrated in a study of associations of green space exposure with depression and/or antidepressant use in the Nurses' Health Study.

Perturbations in the Wild: Leveraging Human-Written Text Perturbations for Realistic Adversarial Attack and Defense

We proposes a novel algorithm, ANTHRO, that inductively extracts over 600K human-written text perturbations in the wild and leverages them for realistic adversarial attack. Unlike existing character-based attacks which often deductively hypothesize a set of manipulation strategies, our work is grounded on actual observations from real-world texts. We find that adversarial texts generated by ANTHRO achieve the best trade-off between (1) attack success rate, (2) semantic preservation of the original text, and (3) stealthiness--i.e. indistinguishable from human writings hence harder to be flagged as suspicious. Specifically, our attacks accomplished around 83% and 91% attack success rates on BERT and RoBERTa, respectively. Moreover, it outperformed the TextBugger baseline with an increase of 50% and 40% in terms of semantic preservation and stealthiness when evaluated by both layperson and professional human workers. ANTHRO can further enhance a BERT classifier's performance in understanding different variations of human-written toxic texts via adversarial training when compared to the Perspective API.

Whose Advantage? Measuring Attention Dynamics across YouTube and Twitter on Controversial Topics

The ideological asymmetries have been recently observed in contested online spaces, where conservative voices seem to be relatively more pronounced even though liberals are known to have the population advantage on digital platforms. Most prior research, however, focused on either one single platform or one single political topic. Whether an ideological group garners more attention across platforms and/or topics, and how the attention dynamics evolve over time, have not been explored. In this work, we present a quantitative study that links collective attention across two social platforms -- YouTube and Twitter, centered on online activities surrounding popular videos of three controversial political topics including Abortion, Gun control, and Black Lives Matter over 16 months. We propose several sets of video-centric metrics to characterize how online attention is accumulated for different ideological groups. We find that neither side is on a winning streak: left-leaning videos are overall more viewed, more engaging, but less tweeted than right-leaning videos. The attention time series unfold quicker for left-leaning videos, but span a longer time for right-leaning videos. Network analysis on the early adopters and tweet cascades show that the information diffusion for left-leaning videos tends to involve centralized actors; while that for right-leaning videos starts earlier in the attention lifecycle. In sum, our findings go beyond the static picture of ideological asymmetries in digital spaces and provide a set of methods to quantify attention dynamics across different social platforms.

Generalized optical theorem for Rayleigh scattering approximation

A general expression for the optical theorem for probe sources given in terms of propagation invariant beams is derived. This expression is obtained using the far field approximation for Rayleigh regime. In order to illustrate this results is revisited the classical and standard scattering elastic problem of a dielectric sphere for which the incident field can be any propagation invariant beam.

An End-to-End Joint Learning Scheme of Image Compression and Quality Enhancement with Improved Entropy Minimization

Recently, learned image compression methods have been actively studied. Among them, entropy-minimization based approaches have achieved superior results compared to conventional image codecs such as BPG and JPEG2000. However, the quality enhancement and rate-minimization are conflictively coupled in the process of image compression. That is, maintaining high image quality entails less compression and vice versa. However, by jointly training separate quality enhancement in conjunction with image compression, the coding efficiency can be improved. In this paper, we propose a novel joint learning scheme of image compression and quality enhancement, called JointIQ-Net, as well as entropy model improvement, thus achieving significantly improved coding efficiency against the previous methods. Our proposed JointIQ-Net combines an image compression sub-network and a quality enhancement sub-network in a cascade, both of which are end-to-end trained in a combined manner within the JointIQ-Net. Also the JointIQ-Net benefits from improved entropy-minimization that newly adopts a Gussian Mixture Model (GMM) and further exploits global context to estimate the probabilities of latent representations. In order to show the effectiveness of our proposed JointIQ-Net, extensive experiments have been performed, and showed that the JointIQ-Net achieves a remarkable performance improvement in coding efficiency in terms of both PSNR and MS-SSIM, compared to the previous learned image compression methods and the conventional codecs such as VVC Intra (VTM 7.1), BPG, and JPEG2000. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first end-to-end optimized image compression method that outperforms VTM 7.1 (Intra), the latest reference software of the VVC standard, in terms of the PSNR and MS-SSIM.

Direct band gap carbon superlattices with efficient optical transition

We report pure carbon-based superlattices that exhibit direct band gaps and excellent optical absorption and emission properties at the threshold energy. The structures are nearly identical to that of cubic diamond except that defective layers characterized by five- and seven-membered rings are intercalated in the diamond lattice. The direct band gaps lie in the range of 5.6~5.9 eV, corresponding to wavelengths of 210~221 nm. The dipole matrix elements of direct optical transition are comparable to that of GaN, suggesting that the superlattices are promising materials as an efficient deep ultraviolet light emitter. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the superlattices are thermally stable even at a high temperature of 2000 K. We provide a possible route to the synthesis of superlattices through wafer bonding of diamond (100) surfaces.

Quality Attributes in Practice: Contemporary Data

It is well known that the software process in place impacts the quality of the resulting product. However, the specific way in which this effect occurs is still mostly unknown and reported through anecdotes. To gather a better understanding of such relationship, a very large survey has been conducted during the last year and has been completed by more than 100 software developers and engineers from 21 countries. We have used the percentage of satisfied customers estimated by the software developers and engineers as the main dependent variable. The results evidence some interesting patterns, like that quality attribute of which customers are more satisfied appears functionality, architectural styles may not have a significant influence on quality, agile methodologies might result in happier customers, larger companies and shorter projects seems to produce better products.

Development and Mass Production of a Mixture of LAB- and DIN-based Gadolinium-loaded Liquid Scintillator for the NEOS Short-baseline Neutrino Experiment

A new experiment, which is called as NEOS (NEutrino Oscillation at Short baseline), is proposed on the site of Hanbit reactors at Yonggwang, South Korea, to investigate a reactor antineutrino anomaly. A homogeneous NEOS detector having a 1000-L target volume has been constructed and deployed at the tendon gallery ~25 m away from the reactor core. A linear alkylbenzene (LAB) is used as a main base solvent of the NEOS detector. Furthermore, a di-isopropylnaphthalene (DIN) is added to improve the light output and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) ability. The ratio of LAB to DIN is 90:10. PPO (3 g/L) and bis-MSB (30 mg/L) are dissolved to formulate the mixture of LAB- and DIN-based liquid scintillator (LS). Then, ~0.5% gadolinium (Gd) is loaded into the LS by using the solvent-solvent extraction technique. In this paper, we report the characteristics of Gd-loaded LS (GdLS) for the NEOS detector and the handling during mass production.

Dipole-Allowed Direct Band Gap Silicon Superlattices

Silicon is the most popular material used in electronic devices. However, its poor optical properties owing to its indirect band gap nature limit its usage in optoelectronic devices. Here we present the discovery of super-stable pure-silicon superlattice structures that can serve as promising materials for solar cell applications and can lead to the realization of pure Si-based optoelectronic devices. The structures are almost identical to that of bulk Si except that defective layers are intercalated in the diamond lattice. The superlattices exhibit dipole-allowed direct band gaps as well as indirect band gaps, providing ideal conditions for the investigation of a direct-to-indirect band gap transition. The transition can be understood in terms of a novel conduction band originating from defective layers, an overlap between the valence- and conduction-band edge states at the interface layers, and zone folding with quantum confinement effects on the conduction band of non-defective bulk-like Si. The fact that almost all structural portions of the superlattices originate from bulk Si warrants their stability and good lattice matching with bulk Si. Through first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, we confirmed their thermal stability and propose a possible method to synthesize the defective layer through wafer bonding.

MOCSA: multiobjective optimization by conformational space annealing

We introduce a novel multiobjective optimization algorithm based on the conformational space annealing (CSA) algorithm, MOCSA. It has three characteristic features: (a) Dominance relationship and distance between solutions in the objective space are used as the fitness measure, (b) update rules are based on the fitness as well as the distance between solutions in the decision space and (c) it uses a constrained local minimizer. We have tested MOCSA on 12 test problems, consisting of ZDT and DTLZ test suites. Benchmark results show that solutions obtained by MOCSA are closer to the Pareto front and covers a wider range of the objective space than those by the elitist non-dominated sorting genetic system (NSGA2).

Mod-CSA: Modularity optimization by conformational space annealing

We propose a new modularity optimization method, Mod-CSA, based on stochastic global optimization algorithm, conformational space annealing (CSA). Our method outperforms simulated annealing in terms of both efficiency and accuracy, finding higher modularity partitions with less computational resources required. The high modularity values found by our method are higher than, or equal to, the largest values previously reported. In addition, the method can be combined with other heuristic methods, and implemented in parallel fashion, allowing it to be applicable to large graphs with more than 10000 nodes.
