On Brown's Problem, Poincare' models for the classifying spaces for proper actions and Nielsen Realization

There is the problem, whether for a given virtually torsionfree discrete group $Γ$ there exists a cocompact proper topological $Γ$-manifold, which is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the classifying space for proper actions. It is related to Nielsen's Realization and to the problem of Brown, whether there is a d-dimensional model for the classifying space for proper actions, if the underlying group has virtually cohomological dimension d. Assuming that the expected manifold model has a zero-dimensional singular set, we solve the problem in the Poincaré category and obtain new results about Brown's problem under certain conditions concerning the underlying group, for instance if it is hyperbolic. In a sequel paper together with James Davis we will deal with this on the level of topological manifolds.

On the algebraic K-theory of Hecke algebras

Consider a totally disconnected group G, which is covirtually cyclic, i.e., contains a normal compact open subgroup L such that G/L is infinite cyclic. We establish a Wang sequence, which computes the algebraic K-groups of the Hecke algebra of G in terms of the one of L, and show that all negative K-groups vanish. This confirms the K-theoretic Farrell-Jones Conjecture for the Hecke algebra of G in this special case. Our ultimate long term goal is to prove it for any closed subgroup of any reductive p-adic group. The results of this paper will play a role in the final proof.

Lehmer's Problem for arbitrary groups

We consider the problem whether for a group G there exists a constant Lambda(G) > 1 such that for any (r,s)-matrix A over the integral group ring ZG the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of the G-equivariant bounded operator from L^2(G)^r to L^2(G)^s given by right multiplication with A is either one or greater or equal to Lambda(G). If G is the infinite cyclic group and we consider only r = s = 1, this is precisely Lehmer's problem.

The Segal Conjecture for Infinite Groups

We formulate and prove a version of the Segal Conjecture for infinite groups. For finite groups it reduces to the original version. The condition that G is finite is replaced in our setting by the assumption that there exists a finite model for the classifying space underline{E}G for proper actions. This assumption is satisfied for instance for word hyperbolic groups or cocompact discrete subgroups of Lie groups with finitely many path components. As a consequence we get for such groups G that the zero-th stable cohomotopy of the classifying space BG is isomorphic to the I-adic completion of the ring given by the zero-th equivariant stable cohomotopy of underline{E}G for I the augmentation ideal.

Algebraic K-theory of group rings and the cyclotomic trace map

We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of Bökstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of $K_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of group homology. In many cases the number theoretic conjectures are true, so we obtain rational injectivity results about assembly maps, in particular for Whitehead groups, under homological finiteness assumptions on the group only. The proof uses the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, Bökstedt-Hsiang-Madsen's functor C, and new general isomorphism and injectivity results about the assembly maps for topological Hochschild homology and C.

Splitting the relative assembly map, Nil-terms and involutions

We show that the relative Farrell-Jones assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for algebraic K-theory is split injective in the setting where the coefficients are additive categories with group action. This generalizes a result of Bartels for rings as coefficients. We give an explicit description of the relative term. This enables us to show that it vanishes rationally if we take coefficients in a regular ring. Moreover, it is, considered as a Z[Z/2]-module by the involution coming from taking dual modules, an extended module and in particular all its Tate cohomology groups vanish, provided that the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of type I of G are orientable. The latter condition is for instance satisfied for torsionfree hyperbolic groups.

Survey on analytic and topological torsion

The article consists of a survey on analytic and topological torsion. Analytic torsion is defined in terms of the spectrum of the analytic Laplace operator on a Riemannian manifold, whereas topological torsion is defined in terms of a triangulation. The celebrated theorem of Cheeger and Müller identifies these two notions for closed Riemannian manifolds. We also deal with manifolds with boundary and with isometric actions of finite groups. The basic theme is to extract topological invariants from the spectrum of the analytic Laplace operator on a Riemannian manifold.

The first $L^2$-Betti number and approximation in arbitrary characteristic

Let G be a finitely generated group and (G_i) a descending chain of finite index normal subgroups of G. Given a field K, we consider the sequence b_1(G_i;K)/[G:G_i] of normalized first Betti numbers of G_i with coefficients in K, which we call a K-approximation for b_1^(2)(G), the first L^2-Betti number of G. In this paper we address the questions of when Q-approximation and F_p-approximation have a limit, when these limits coincide, when they are independent of the sequence (G_i) and how they are related to b_1^(2)(G). In particular, we show that the limit of the sequence b_1(G_i;F_p)/[G:G_i] is greater than or equal to b_1^(2)(G) under the assumptions that (G_i) has trivial intersection and each G/G_i is a finite p-group.

On the spectral density function of the Laplacian of a graph

Let X be a finite graph. Let E be the number of its edges and d be its degree. Denote by F_1(X) its first spectral density function which counts the number of eigenvalues less or equal to lambda^2 of the associated Laplace operator. We prove the estimate F_1(X)(lambda) - F_1(X)(0) le 2 cdot E cdot d cdot lambda for 0 le lambda < 1. We explain how this gives evidence for conjectures about approximating Fuglede-Kadison determinants and L^2-torsion.

Approximating L^2-invariants and homology growth

In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior of invariants such as Betti numbers, minimal numbers of generators of singular homology, the order of the torsion subgroup of singular homology, and torsion invariants. We will show that all these vanish in the limit if the CW-complex under consideration fibers in a specific way. In particular we will show that all these vanish in the limit if one considers an aspherical closed manifold which admits a non-trivial S^1-action or whose fundamental group contains an infinite normal elementary amenable subgroup. By considering classifying spaces we also get results for groups.

Topological K-(co-)homology of classifying spaces of discrete groups

Let G be a discrete group. We give methods to compute for a generalized (co-)homology theory its values on the Borel construction (EG x X)/G of a proper G-CW-complex X satisfying certain finiteness conditions. In particular we give formulas computing the topological K-(co)homology of the classifying space BG up to finite abelian torsion groups. They apply for instance to arithmetic groups, word hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups and discrete cocompact subgroups of almost connected Lie groups. For finite groups G these formulas are sharp. The main new tools we use for the K-theory calculation are a Cocompletion Theorem and Equivariant Universal Coefficient Theorems which are of independent interest. In the case where G is a finite group these theorems reduce to well-known results of Greenlees and Boekstedt.

On the group cohomology of the semi-direct product Z^n rtimes Z/m and a conjecture of Adem-Ge-Pan-Petrosyan

Consider the semi-direct product Z^n rtimes Z/m. A conjecture of Adem-Ge-Pan-Petrosyan predicts that the associated Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence collapses. We prove this conjecture provided that the Z/m-action on Z^n is free outside the origin. We disprove the conjecture in general, namely, we give an example with n=6 and m=4, where the second differential does not vanish.

The topological K-theory of certain crystallographic groups

Let Gamma be a semidirect product of the form Z^n rtimes Z/p where p is prime and the Z/p-action on Z^n is free away from the origin. We will compute the topological K-theory of the real and complex group C*-algebra of Gamma and show that Gamma satisfies the unstable Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture. On the way we will analyze the (co-)homology and the topological K-theory of the classifying spaces BGamma and underbar{B}Gamma. The latter is the quotient of the induced Z/p-action on the torus T^n.

Induction and computation of Bass Nil Groups for finite groups

Let G be a finite group. We show that the Bass Nil-groups $NK_n(RG)$, $n \in Z$, are generated from the p-subgroups of G by induction maps, certain twisting maps depending on elements in the centralizers of the p-subgroups, and the Verschiebung homomorphisms. As a consequence, the groups $NK_n(RG)$ are generated by induction from elementary subgroups. For $NK_0(ZG)$ we get an improved estimate of the torsion exponent.

K- and L-theory of the semi-direct product of the discrete 3-dimensional Heisenberg group by Z/4

We compute the group homology, the topological K-theory of the reduced C^*-algebra, the algebraic K-theory and the algebraic L-theory of the group ring of the semi-direct product of the three-dimensional discrete Heisenberg group by Z/4. These computations will follow from the more general treatment of a certain class of groups G which occur as extensions 1-->K-->G-->Q-->1 of a torsionfree group K by a group Q which satisfies certain assumptions. The key ingredients are the Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones Conjectures and methods from equivariant algebraic topology.

Commuting homotopy limits and smash products

In general the processes of taking a homotopy inverse limit of a diagram of spectra and smashing spectra with a fixed space do not commute. In this paper we investigate under what additional assumptions these two processes do commute. In fact we deal with an equivariant generalization which involves spectra and smash products over the orbit category of a discrete group. Such a situation naturally occurs if one studies the equivariant homology theory associated to topological cyclic homology. The main theorem of this paper will play a role in the generalization of the results obtained by Boekstedt, Hsiang and Madsen about the algebraic K-theory Novikov Conjecture to the assembly map for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups.

Equivariant Euler characteristics and K-homology Euler classes for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Let G be a countable discrete group and let M be a smooth proper cocompact G-manifold without boundary. The Euler operator defines via Kasparov theory an element, called the equivariant Euler class, in the equivariant K-homology of M. The universal equivariant Euler characteristic of M, which lives in a group U^G(M), counts the equivariant cells of M, taking the component structure of the various fixed point sets into account. We construct a natural homomorphism from U^G(M) to the equivariant KO-homology of M. The main result of this paper says that this map sends the universal equivariant Euler characteristic to the equivariant Euler class. In particular this shows that there are no `higher' equivariant Euler characteristics. We show that, rationally, the equivariant Euler class carries the same information as the collection of the orbifold Euler characteristics of the components of the L-fixed point sets M^L, where L runs through the finite cyclic subgroups of G. However, we give an example of an action of the symmetric group S_3 on the 3-sphere for which the equivariant Euler class has order 2, so there is also some torsion information.

The equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Suppose one is given a discrete group G, a cocompact proper G-manifold M, and a G-self-map f of M. Then we introduce the equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is globally defined in terms of cellular chain complexes, and the local equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is locally defined in terms of fixed point data. We prove the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem, which says that these two classes agree. As a special case, we prove an equivariant Poincare-Hopf Theorem, computing the universal equivariant Euler characteristic in terms of the zeros of an equivariant vector field, and also obtain an orbifold Lefschetz fixed point theorem. Finally, we prove a realization theorem for universal equivariant Euler characteristics.

The p-chain spectral sequence

We introduce a new spectral sequence called the p-chain spectral sequence which converges to the (co-)homology of a contravariant C-space with coefficients in a covariant C-spectrum for a small category C. It is different from the corresponding Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence. It can be used in combination with the Isomorphism Conjectures of Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones to compute algebraic K- and L-groups of group rings and topological K-groups of reduced group C*-algebras.
