Substructure of Multiquark Hadrons (Snowmass 2021 White Paper)

In recent years there has been a rapidly growing body of experimental evidence for existence of exotic, multiquark hadrons, i.e. mesons which contain additional quarks, beyond the usual quark-antiquark pair and baryons which consist of more than three quarks. In all cases with robust evidence they contain at least one heavy quark Q=c or b, the majority including two heavy quarks. Two key theoretical questions have been triggered by these discoveries: (a) how are quarks organized inside these multiquark states -- as compact objects with all quarks within one confinement volume, interacting via color forces, perhaps with an important role played by diquarks, or as deuteron-like hadronic molecules, bound by light-meson exchange? (b) what other multiquark states should we expect? The two questions are tightly intertwined. Each of the interpretations provides a natural explanation of parts of the data, but neither explains all of the data. It is quite possible that both kinds of structures appear in Nature. It may also be the case that certain states are superpositions of the compact and molecular configurations. This Whitepaper brings together contributions from many leading practitioners in the field, representing a wide spectrum of theoretical interpretations. We discuss the importance of future experimental and phenomenological work, which will lead to better understandingof multiquark phenomena in QCD.

Duality Between Hydrogen Atom and Oscillator Systems via Hidden SO(d,2) Symmetry and 2T-physics

The relation between motion in $-1/r$ and $r^{2}$ potentials, known since Newton, can be demonstrated by the substitution $r\rightarrow r^{2}$ in the classical/quantum radial equations of the Kepler/Hydrogen problems versus the harmonic oscillator. This suggests a duality-type relationship between these systems. However, when both radial and angular components of these systems are included the possibility of a true duality seems to be remote. Indeed, investigations that explored and generalized Newton's radial relation, including algebraic approaches based on noncompact groups such as SO(4,2), have never exhibited a full duality consistent with Newton's. On the other hand, 2T-physics predicts a host of dualities between pairs of a huge set of systems that includes Newton's two systems. These dualities take the form of rather complicated canonical transformations that relate the full phase spaces of these respective systems in all directions. In this paper we focus on Newton's case by imposing his radial relation to find an appropriate basis for 2T-physics dualities, and then construct the full duality. Using the techniques of 2T-physics, we discuss the hidden symmetry of the actions (beyond the symmetry of Hamiltonians) for the Hydrogen atom in $D$-dimensions and the harmonic oscillator in $\bar{D}$ dimensions. The symmetries lead us to find the one-to-one relation between the quantum states, including angular degrees of freedom, for specific values of $\left( D,\bar{D}\right) $, and construct the explicit quantum canonical transformation in those special cases. We find that the canonical transformation has itself a hidden gauge symmetry that is crucial for the respective phase spaces to be dual even when $D\neq\bar{D}$. In this way we display the surprising beautiful symmetry of the full duality that generalizes Newton's radial duality.

Interpretation of excited $Ω_b$ signals

Recently LHCb reported the discovery of four extremely narrow excited $Ω_b$ baryons decaying into $Ξ_b^0 K^-$. We interpret these baryons as bound states of a $b$-quark and a $P$-wave $ss$-diquark. For such a system there are exactly five possible combinations of spin and orbital angular momentum. We predict two of spin 1/2, two of spin 3/2, and one of spin 5/2, all with negative parity. We favor identifying the observed states as those those with spins 1/2 and 3/2, and give a range of predicted masses for the one with spin 5/2. We update earlier predictions for these states based on the five narrow excited $Ω_c$ states reported by LHCb. An alternative picture of the states in which one of $J=1/2$ is extremely wide and hence not seen by LHCb is discussed.

Interpretation of structure in the di-$J/ψ$ spectrum

Structure in the di-$J/ψ$ mass spectrum observed by the LHCb experiment around 6.9 and 7.2 GeV is interpreted in terms of $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ resonances between a $cc$ diquark and a $\bar c \bar c$ antidiquark, using a recently confirmed string-junction picture to calculate tetraquark masses. The main peak around 6.9 GeV is likely dominated by the $0^{++}(2S)$ state, a radial excitation of the $cc$-$\bar c \bar c$ tetraquark, which we predict at $6.871\pm 0.025$ GeV. The dip around 6.75 GeV is ascribed to the opening of the \Swave\ di-$χ_{c0}$ channel, while the dip around 7.2 GeV could be correlated with the opening of the di-$η_c(2S)$ or $Ξ_{cc} \bar Ξ_{cc}$ channel. The low-mass part of the di-$J/ψ$ structure appears to require a broad resonance consistent with a predicted $2^{++}(1S)$ state with invariant mass around $M_{\rm inv} = 6400$ MeV. Implications for $bb \bar b \bar b$ tetraquarks are discussed.

Mass inequalities for baryons with heavy quarks

Baryons with one or more heavy quarks have been shown, in the context of a nonrelativistic description, to exhibit mass inequalities under permutations of their quarks, when spin averages are taken. These inequalities sometimes are invalidated when spin-dependent forces are taken into account. A notable instance is the inequality $2E(Mmm) > E(MMm) + E(mmm)$, where $m = m_u = m_d$, satisfied for $M = m_b$ or $M = m_c$ but not for $M = m_s$, unless care is taken to remove effects of spin-spin interactions. Thus in the quark-level analog of nuclear fusion, the reactions $Λ_b Λ_b \to Ξ_{bb}N$ and $Λ_c Λ_c \to Ξ_{cc}^{++}n$ are exothermic, releasing respectively 138 and 12 MeV, while $ΛΛ\to ΞN$ is endothermic, requiring an input of between 23 and 29 MeV. Here we explore such mass inequalities in the context of an approach, previously shown to predict masses successfully, in which contributions consist of additive constituent-quark masses, spin-spin interactions, and additional binding terms for pairs each member of which is at least as heavy as a strange quark.

Exotic resonances due to $η$ exchange

The meson $X(3872)$ and several related states appear to be, at least in part, hadronic molecules in which a heavy flavored meson (such as $D^0$) is bound to another heavy meson (such as $\bar D^{*0}$). Although not the only effect contributing to the binding, pion exchange seems to play a crucial role in generating the longest-range force between constituents. Mesons without $u$ and $d$ light quarks (such as $D_s$) cannot exchange pions, but under suitable circumstances can bind as a result of $η$ exchange. Channels in which this mechanism is possible are identified, and suggestions are made for searches for the corresponding molecular states, including a manifestly exotic baryonic $Λ_c \bar D_s^*$ resonance decaying into $J/ψ~Λ$.

From $Ξ_b \to Λ_b π$ to $Ξ_c \to Λ_c π$

Using a successful framework for describing S-wave hadronic decays of light hyperons induced by a subprocess $s \to u (\bar u d)$, we presented recently a model-independent calculation of the amplitude and branching ratio for $Ξ^-_b \to Λ_b π^-$ in agreement with a LHCb measurement. The same quark process contributes to $Ξ^0_c \to Λ_c π^-$, while a second term from the subprocess $cs \to cd$ has been related by Voloshin to differences among total decay rates of charmed baryons. We calculate this term and find it to have a magnitude approximately equal to the $s \to u (\bar u d)$ term. We argue for a negligible relative phase between these two contributions, potentially due to final state interactions. However, we do not know whether they interfere destructively or constructively. For constructive interference one predicts ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Λ_c π^-) = (1.94 \pm 0.70)\times 10^{-3}$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Λ_c π^0) = (3.86 \pm 1.35)\times 10^{-3}$. For destructive interference, the respective branching fractions are expected to be less than about $10^{-4}$ and $2 \times 10^{-4}$.

Improving the measurement of the CKM phase $ϕ_2 = α$ in $B \to ππ$ and $B \to ρρ$ decays

CP-violating asymmetries in $B \to ππ$ and $B \to ρρ$ decays can help specify the weak phase $ϕ_2 = α$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-% Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We discuss the impact of improved measurements of these processes such as will be available in the near future, finding special value in better measurement of the time-dependent CP violation parameter $S_{00}$ in $B^0 \to π^0 π^0$ and $B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0$. Reducing the errors on $B \to ρρ$ measurements by a factor of two can potentially lead to an error in $ϕ_2 = α$ just above $2^\circ$, at which level isospin-breaking corrections must be considered.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2015

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lattice-QCD simulations. The combination of experimental leptonic decay-rate measurements and theoretical decay-constant calculations enables the determination of several elements of the CKM matrix within the standard model. These determinations are competitive with those obtained from semileptonic decays, and also complementary because they are sensitive to different quark flavor-changing currents. They can also be used to test the unitarity of the first and second rows of the CKM matrix. Conversely, taking the CKM elements predicted by unitarity, one can infer "experimental" values for $f_P$ that can be compared with theory. These provide tests of lattice-QCD methods, provided new-physics contributions to leptonic decays are negligible at the current level of precision. This review is the basis of the article in the Particle Data Group's 2016 edition, updating the versions in Refs. [1-3].

S-wave nonleptonic hyperon decays and $Ξ^-_b \to π^- Λ_b$

The decay $Ξ^-_b \to π^- Λ_b$ has recently been observed by the LHCb Collaboration at CERN. In contrast to most weak decays of $b$-flavored baryons, this process involves the decay of the strange quark in $Ξ_b$, and thus has features in common with nonleptonic weak decays of hyperons. Thanks to the expected pure S-wave nature of the decay in question in the heavy $b$ quark limit, we find that its amplitude may be related to those for S-wave nonleptonic decays of $Λ$, $Σ$, and $Ξ$ in a picture inspired by duality. The calculated branching fraction ${\cal B}(Ξ^-_b \to π^- Λ_b) = (6.3 \pm 4.2) \times 10^{-3}$ is consistent with the range allowed in the LHCb analysis. The error is dominated by an assumed 30\% uncertainty in the amplitude due to possible U(3) violation. A more optimistic view based on sum rules involving nonleptonic hyperon decay S-wave amplitudes reduces the error on the branching fraction to $2.0 \times 10^{-3}$.

Low-energy photon production in neutrino neutral-current interactions

The search for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillations by the MiniBooNE Collaboration at Fermilab has revealed a low-energy signal which could be due either to electrons produced by $ν_e$ or photons produced by the interaction of the weak neutral current on the target nucleus. One contribution to the latter is a Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly leading to a term in the Lagrangian proportional to $ε^{μνκλ} Z_μω_νF_{κλ}$. This term is normalized with the help of the known rates for the processes $f_1 \to ργ$ and $τ\to ν_τa_1$. A rate of about 1/4 of that employed in several previous estimates is obtained. As the anomaly term had already been found to play a subdominant role in photon production (e.g., in comparison with $Δ$ excitation and decay), the present estimate reduces its strength even further.

New Exotic Meson and Baryon Resonances from Doubly-Heavy Hadronic Molecules

We predict several new exotic doubly-heavy hadronic resonances, inferring from the observed exotic bottomonium-like and charmonium-like narrow states $X(3872)$, $Z_b(10610)$, $Z_b(10650)$, $Z_c(3900)$, and $Z_c(4020/4025)$. We interpret the binding mechanism as mostly molecular-like isospin-exchange attraction between two heavy-light mesons in a relative S-wave state. We then generalize it to other systems containing two heavy hadrons which can couple through isospin exchange. The new predicted states include resonances in meson-meson, meson-baryon, baryon-baryon, and baryon-antibaryon channels. These include those giving rise to final states involving a heavy quark $Q=c,b$ and antiquark $\bar Q' = \bar c,\bar b$, namely $D \bar D^*$, $D^* \bar D^*$, $D^* B^*$, $\bar B B^*$, $\bar B^* B^*$, $Σ_c \bar D^*$, $Σ_c B^*$, $Σ_b \bar D^*$, $Σ_b B^*$, $Σ_c \bar Σ_c$, $Σ_c \bar Λ_c$, $Σ_c \bar Λ_b$, $Σ_b \bar Σ_b$, $Σ_b \bar Λ_b$, and $Σ_b \bar Λ_c$, as well as corresponding S-wave states giving rise to $Q Q'$ or $\bar Q \bar Q'$.

Photoproduction of Exotic Baryon Resonances

We point out that the new exotic resonances recently reported by LHCb in the $J/ψp$ channel are excellent candidates for photoproduction off a proton target. This test is crucial to confirming the resonant nature of such states, as opposed to their being kinematical effects. We specialize to an interpretation of the heavier narrow state as a molecule composed of $Σ_c$ and $\bar D^*$, and estimate its production cross section using vector dominance. The relevant photon energies and fluxes are well within the capabilities of the GlueX and CLAS12 detectors at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLAB). A corresponding calculation is also performed for photoproduction of an analogous resonance which is predicted to exist in the $Υp$ channel.

Prospects for observing the lowest-lying odd-parity $Σ_c$ and $Σ_b$ baryons

There exist candidates for the negative-parity states $Λ_{c,b}(1/2^-, 3/2^-)$ consisting of an isospin-zero, spin-zero light diquark $[ud]$ with one unit of orbital angular momentum with respect to a $c,b$ quark. However, there exists only one candidate for the orbital excitations of the $Σ_c(1/2^+)$ and $Σ_c^*(3/2^+)$, and none for the orbital excitations of $Σ_b(1/2^+)$ or $Σ_b^*(3/2^+)$. We extend a previous discussion of odd-parity $Λ_{c,b}$ states and explore some patterns of the odd-parity $Σ_{c,b}$ baryons consisting of a light isospin-one nonstrange diquark $(uu,ud,dd)$ in a state of $L=1$ with respect to the spin-1/2 heavy quark $(c,b)$.

Radiative Return Capabilities of a High-Energy, High-Luminosity $e^+e^-$ Collider

An electron-positron collider operating at a center-of-mass energy $E_{CM}$ can collect events at all lower energies through initial-state radiation (ISR or radiative return). We explore the capabilities for radiative return studies by a proposed high-luminosity collider at $E_{CM}$ = 250 or 90 GeV, to fill in gaps left by lower-energy colliders such as PEP, PETRA, TRISTAN, and LEP. These capabilities are compared with those of the lower-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders as well as hadron colliders such as the Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Some examples of accessible questions in dark photon searches and heavy flavor spectroscopy are given.

Test for exotic isoscalar resonance dominating $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$ decays

The decay $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$ appears to be dominated by $ρπ$ states in a configuration of zero total isotopic spin. The spin $J$, parity $P$, and charge-conjugation eigenvalue $C$ of this final state are therefore $J^{PC} = 0^{--}$, which cannot be formed of a quark $q$ and antiquark $\bar q$. If a resonance near $M(D^0)$ dominates the final state, it must be a {\it hybrid} composed of a quark-antiquark pair and a constituent gluon, or a {\it tetraquark} $q q \bar q \bar q$. A test for this resonance in electroproduction is proposed.

$X(3872)$, $X_b$, and the $χ_{b1}(3P)$ state

We discuss the possible production and discovery channels in $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ machines of the $X_b$, the bottomonium counterpart of $X(3872)$ and the putative isoscalar analogue of the charged bottomonium-like states $Z_b$ discovered by Belle. We suggest that the $X_b$ may be close in mass to the bottomonium state $χ_{b1}(3P)$, mixing with it and sharing its decay channels, just as $X(3872)$ is likely a mixture of a $\bar D D^*$ molecule and $χ_{c1}(2P)$. Consequently, the experiments which reported observing $χ_{b1}(3P)$ might have actually discovered the $X_b$, or a mixture of the two states.

Asymmetry in $Λ_b$ and $\bar Λ_b$ production

In CMS data at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, the ratio $σ(pp \to \bar Λ_b X)/σ(p p \to Λ_b X)$ appears to fall as the baryons become more forward. Mechanisms which could give rise to this effect are discussed. It is urged that the same physics be explored in data from the LHCb Detector at CERN and the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. In the latter, if such leading-baryon effects are present, one expects $Λ_b$ to be preferentially produced in the direction of the proton and $\bar Λ_b$ to be preferentially produced in the direction of the antiproton.

Baryons with two heavy quarks: Masses, production, decays, and detection

The large number of $B_c$ mesons observed by LHCb suggests a sizable cross section for producing doubly-heavy baryons in the same experiment. Motivated by this, we estimate masses of the doubly-heavy $J=1/2$ baryons $Ξ_{cc}$, $Ξ_{bb}$, and $Ξ_{bc}$, and their $J=3/2$ hyperfine partners, using a method which accurately predicts the masses of ground-state baryons with a single heavy quark. We obtain $M(Ξ_{cc}) = 3627 \pm 12$ MeV, $M(Ξ_{cc}^*)= 3690 \pm 12$ MeV, $M(Ξ_{bb}) = 10162 \pm 12$ MeV, $M(Ξ_{bb}^*)= 10184 \pm 12$ MeV, $M(Ξ_{bc}) = 6914 \pm 13$ MeV, $M(Ξ'_{bc}) = 6933 \pm 12$ MeV, and $M(Ξ_{bc}^*) = 6969 \pm 14$ MeV. As a byproduct, we estimate the hyperfine splitting between $B_c^*$ and $B_c$ mesons to be $68 \pm 8$ MeV. We discuss P-wave excitations, production mechanisms, decay modes, lifetimes, and prospects for detection of the doubly heavy baryons.

Charmless B -> PPP Decays: the Fully-Symmetric Final State

In charmless B -> PPP decays, where P is a pseudoscalar meson, there are six possibilities for the symmetry of the final state. In this paper, for P=pi,K, we examine the properties of the fully-symmetric final state. We present expressions for all 32 B -> PPP decay amplitudes as a function of both SU(3) reduced matrix elements and diagrams, demonstrating the equivalence of diagrams and SU(3). We also give 25 relations among the amplitudes in the SU(3) limit, as well as those that appear when the diagrams E/A/PA are neglected. In the SU(3) limit, one has the equalities \sqrt{2} A(B+ -> K+ pi+ pi-)_{FS} = A(B+ -> K+ K+ K-)_{FS} and \sqrt{2} A(B+ -> pi+ K+ K-)_{FS} = A(B+ -> pi+ pi+ pi-)_{FS}, where FS denotes the fully-symmetric final state. These provide good tests of the standard model that can be carried out now by the LHCb Collaboration.

Interpretation of an "edge" in proton-proton scattering

A study of proton-proton collisions at very high energy has revealed a "black disk," whose radius grows with the logarithm of the center-of-mass energy, surrounded by an edge of approximately constant width 1 fm. We interpret this behavior as the maximum length of a QCD string connecting the color triplet and antitriplet components of the proton, and propose further tests of this explanation.

Three sterile neutrinos in E6

Candidates for unfication of the electroweak and strong interactions include the grand unified groups SU(5), SO(10), and the exceptional group E6. The 27-dimensional fundamental representation of E6 contains exotic fermions, including weak isosinglet quarks of charge -1/3, vector-like weak isodoublet leptons, and neutral leptons which are singlets under both left-handed and right-handed SU(2). These last are candidates for light "sterile" neutrinos, hinted at by some recent short-baseline neutrino experiments. In order to accommodate three families of quarks and charged leptons, an E6 model must contain three 27-plets, each of which contains a sterile neutrino candidate n. The mixing pattern within a 27-plet is described, and experimental consequences are discussed.

CP asymmetries in three-body B+- decays to charged pions and kaons

CP asymmetries have been measured recently by the LHCb collaboration in three-body $B^+$ decays to final states involving charged pions and kaons. Large asymmetries with opposite signs at a level of about 60% have been observed in $B^\pm\to π^\pm({\rm or} K^\pm)π^+π^-$ and $B^\pm \to π^\pm K^+K^-$ for restricted regions in the Dalitz plots involving $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ with low invariant mass. U-spin is shown to predict corresponding $ΔS=0$ and $ΔS=1$ asymmetries with opposite signs and inversely proportional to their branching ratios, in analogy with a successful relation predicted thirteen years ago between asymmetries in $B_s\to K^-π^+$ and $B^0 \to K^+ π^-$. We compare these predictions with the measured integrated asymmetries. Effects of specific resonant or non-resonant partial waves on enhanced asymmetries for low-pair-mass regions of the Dalitz plot are studied in $B^\pm \to π^\pm π^+π^-$. The closure of low-mass $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ channels involving only $ππ\leftrightarrow K\bar K$ rescattering may explain by CPT approximately equal magnitudes and opposite signs measured in $B^\pm\to π^\pmπ^+π^-$ and $B^\pm \to π^\pm K^+K^-$.

Hadronic and radiative $D^*$ decays

A recent measurement of the total $D^{*+}$ width, $Γ_{\rm tot}(D^{*+}) = (83.3 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.4)$ keV, is shown to be close to earlier predictions based on the single-quark-transition hypothesis. Those predictions are updated using more recent masses and branching fractions to a value of 80.4 keV, with a small uncertainty associated with the radiative branching fractions of $D^{*0}$ and $D^{*+}$. A prediction for the total width of $D_2(2460)$ and its partial width into $D^* π$ and $D π$ is also updated, and found to be in agreement with experiment.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons - 2013

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+}$ in the charm sector. The lighter $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ mesons provide stringent comparisons between experiment and theory due to the accuracy of both the measurements and the theoretical predictions. An abridged version of this review was prepared for the Particle Data Group's 2014 edition \cite{Previous}.

Shift in weak phase $γ$ due to CP asymmetries in $D$ decays to two pseudoscalar mesons

A difference of several tenths of a percent has been observed between the direct CP asymmetries of $D^0\to K^+K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$. It has been noted recently that CP asymmetries in such singly-Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decays can affect the determination of the weak phase $γ$ using the Gronau-London-Wyler method of comparing rates for $B^+ \to D K^+$ and $B^- \to D K^-$, where $D$ is a superposition of $D^0$ and $\od$ decaying to a CP eigenstate. Using an analysis of the CP asymmetries in SCS decays based on a $c \to u$ penguin amplitude with standard model weak phase but enhanced by CP-conserving strong interactions, we estimate typical shifts in $γ$ of several degrees and pinpoint measurements which would reduce uncertainties to an acceptable level.

Theoretical Issues in Flavor Physics

Quark and lepton flavor physics presents us with a basic question: Can we understand the pattern of masses and mixings of the known quarks and leptons, and how do present and proposed measurements help to advance that goal? Topics discussed include the apparent suppression of new flavor-changing effects, the status of quark and lepton mixing, the implications of new measurements of CP asymmetries in heavy quark decays, the impications of forthcoming experiments on the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and its transitions to an electron, and what we can hope to learn from electric dipole moments.

Background dependence of dimuon asymmetry in $\bar p p$ interactions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

The D0 Collaboration has reported an anomalous charge asymmetry in the production of same-sign muon pairs at the Fermilab Tevatron. The magnitude of this effect depends on the subtraction of several backgrounds, the most notable of which is due to kaons being misidentified as muons either through decays in flight or punch-through. The present authors suggested a check on such backgrounds consisting of a tight restriction on the muon impact parameter $b$, to confirm that this excess was indeed due to $B_{(s)}$ meson decays. The D0 Collaboration has performed a related check applying transverse impact parameter (IP) restrictions, whose implications are discussed. We study background asymmetry predictions for events involving two muons with IP bounds which are complementary to each other. These predictions may be used in future measurements of the net charge asymmetry from $B_{(s)}$ decays.

CP asymmetries in singly-Cabibbo-suppressed $D$ decays to two pseudoscalar mesons

The LHCb Collaboration has recently reported evidence for a CP asymmetry approaching the percent level in the difference between $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ and $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$. We analyze this effect as if it is due to a penguin amplitude with the weak phase of the standard model $c \to b \to u$ loop diagram, but with a CP-conserving enhancement as if due to the strong interactions. In such a case the magnitude and strong phase of this amplitude $P_b$ are correlated in order to fit the observed CP asymmetry, and one may predict CP asymmetries for a number of other singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charmed mesons to a pair of pseudoscalar mesons. Non-zero CP asymmetries are expected for $D^+ \to K^+ \ok$ (the most promising channel for which a non-zero CP asymmetry has not yet been reported), as well as $D^0 \to π^0 π^0$, $D_s^+ \to π^+ \ko$, and $D_s \to π^0 K^+$. No CP asymmetry is predicted for $D^+ \to π^+ π^0$ or $D^0 \to \ko \ok$ in this framework.

Direct CP Violation in D Decays in view of LHCb and CDF Results

The LHCb and CDF Collaborations have recently reported evidence for a CP asymmetry around -0.7% in $ΔA_{CP}$, the difference between $A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^+ K^-)$ and $A_{CP}(D^0 \to π^+π^-)$. In the Standard Model this effect may be accounted for by enhanced $1/m_c$ corrections in a CP-violating penguin amplitude governed by a Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) factor $V^*_{cb}V_{ub}$. A consistent scheme based on broken flavor SU(3) is presented relating Cabibbo-favored (CF) and singly-Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) $D$ meson decay rates into two pseudoscalars. Two important ingredients supporting the above interpretation for $ΔA_{CP}$ are a large exchange amplitude in CF decays which is formally $1/m_c$-suppressed, and a pure $ΔU=0$ U-spin breaking CP-conserving penguin amplitude involving $V^*_{cs}V_{us}$ and $V^*_{cd}V_{ud}$ which accounts for the difference between the $D^0\to K^+K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ decay rates. The magnitudes of the CP conserving and CP violating penguin amplitudes, where the former involves U-spin breaking at a level of 10%, are shown to be related to each other by the magnitudes of corresponding CKM factors. This simple scheme leads to preferable sign predictions for CP asymmetries in charmed meson decays into two pseudoscalars and to correlations between asymmetries in two pairs of these processes.

Flavor-SU(3) tests from $D^0 \to K^0 K^- π^+$ and $D^0 \to \bar K^0 K^+ π^-$ Dalitz plots

The processes $D^0\to K^0 K^-π^+$ and $D^0\to\ok K^+π^-$ involve intermediate vector resonances whose amplitudes and phases are related to each other via flavor-SU(3) symmetry. Dalitz plots for these two processes can shed light on the usefulness of this symmetry in studying charm decays. Until this year the only available data on this process came from a conference report in 2002 by the BaBar Collaboration, but now an independent data sample of higher statistics has become available from the CLEO Collaboration. The goal is to predict Dalitz plot amplitudes and phases assuming flavor-SU(3) symmetry and compare them with experiment. An SU(3) fit can account for the relative magnitudes of the amplitudes for the decays $D^0 \to K^{*-}K^+$ and $D^0 \to K^{*+}K^-$, but neither the current BaBar sample (based on an integrated luminosity of 22 fb$^{-1}$) nor the CLEO analysis has significant evidence for the decays $D^0\to K^{*0}\ok$ and $D^0 \to \oks K^0$. At this level one is unable to compare magnitudes and phases with theoretical predictions. The purpose of this Letter is to advocate an analysis using the full BaBar sample (more than 20 times the 2002 value). It should definitively determine whether predicted magnitudes and phases agree with experiment. A similar analysis should be possible with an even larger sample of events collected by the Belle Collaboration at KEK-B.

Leptonic decays of charged pseudoscalar mesons - 2012

This review was prepared for the Particle Data Group's 2012 edition.

Non-factorizable effects in top quark production

The production of top-antitop pairs at the Fermilab Tevatron shows a forward-backward asymmetry in which the top quark tends to follow the proton direction, while the antitop tends to follow the antiproton direction. The effect grows with increasing effective mass $m_{t \bar t}$ of the top-antitop pair, and with increasing rapidity difference between the top and antitop. The observed effect is about three times as large as predicted by next-to-leading-order QCD, but with the same sign. An estimate of non-factorizable effects based on a QCD string picture finds they are negligible, but that small distortions of the $m_t$ spectrum are possible. Tests for such effects, both at and above the level of this estimate, are suggested.

Nonleptonic Charm Decays and CP Violation

In this talk we briefly present a flavor-SU(3) technique to study branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries $D$-meson decays. The first part of the talk is meant to set up a foundation, based on previous work, to deal with flavor-SU(3) amplitudes and relative strong phases. In addition, we present a model for dealing with SU(3)-breaking in branching ratio measurements of SCS $D^0$ decays. In the second part of the talk we make use of a proposal for an enhanced CP-violating penguin in the SM, to explain the recent LHCb and CDF observations of CP violation in SCS $D^0$ decays. Furthermore, we use our model to predict CP violation in $π^0π^0$ and $K^+\bar{K}^0$ final states. Large experimental bounds on individual CP asymmetries give rise to a large allowed range of $δ$, the strong phase of the CP-violating penguin. We also briefly discuss future prospects.

Prospects for improved $Λ_c$ branching fractions

The experimental uncertainty on the branching fraction $\b(Λ_c \to p K^- π^+) = (5.0 \pm 1.3)%$ has not decreased since 1998, despite a much larger data sample. Uncertainty in this quantity dominates that in many other quantities, including branching fractions of $Λ_c$ to other modes, branching fractions of $b$-flavored baryons, and fragmentation fractions of charmed and bottom quarks. Here we advocate a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors in $Λ_c \to Λ\ell^+ ν_\ell$ (the case $\ell = e^+$ is simpler as the mass of the lepton can be neglected). Such a calculation would yield an absolute prediction for the rate for $Λ_c \to Λ\ell^+ ν_\ell$. When combined with the $Λ_c$ lifetime, it could provide a calibration for an improved set of $Λ_c$ branching fractions as long as the accuracy exceeds about 25%.

Rescattering Contributions to rare B-Meson Decays

Several $B$ and $B_s$ decays have been observed which have been cited as evidence for exchange ($E$), penguin annihilation ($PA$) and annihilation ($A$) processes, such as $\bar b d \to \bar u u$, $\bar b s \to \bar u u$ and $\bar b u \to W^* \to \bar c s$, respectively. These amplitudes are normally thought to be suppressed, as they involve the spectator quark in the weak interaction and thus should be proportional to the $B$-meson decay constant $f_B$. However, as pointed out a number of years ago, they can also be generated by rescattering from processes whose amplitudes do not involve $f_B$, such as color-favored tree amplitudes. In this paper we investigate a number of processes such as $B^0 \to K^+ K^-$, $B_s \to π^+ π^-$, and $B^+ \to D_s^+ ϕ$, and identify promising states from which they can be generated by rescattering. We find that $E$ and $PA$-type processes are characterized respectively by amplitudes ranging from 5% to 10% and from 15% to 20% with respect to the largest amplitude from which they can rescatter. Based on this regularity, using approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry in some cases and time-reversal invariance in others, we predict the branching fractions for a large number of as-yet-unseen $B$ and $B_s$ decays in an extensive range from order $10^{-9}$ to $10^{-4}$.

Revisiting D0-D0bar mixing using U-spin

We prove that $D^0$-$\bar D^0$ mixing in the standard model occurs only at second order in U-spin breaking. The U-spin subgroup of SU(3) is found to be a powerful tool for analyzing the cancellation of intermediate-state contributions to the $D^0$--$\od^0$ mixing parameter $y = ΔΓ/(2 Γ)$. Cancellations due to states {\it within a single U-spin triplet} are shown to be valid to first order in U-spin breaking. Illustrations are given for triplets consisting of (a) pairs of charged pions and kaons; (b) pairs of neutral pseudoscalar members of the meson octet; (c) charged vector-pseudoscalar pairs, and (d) states of four charged kaons and pions.

A Leptophobic Z' And Dark Matter From Grand Unification

We explore the phenomenology of Grand Unified Models based on the E_6 group, focusing on the Z' with suppressed couplings to leptons that can appear in such models. We find that this Z' can accommodate the W+dijets anomaly reported by the CDF collaboration. Furthermore, a viable dark matter candidate in the form of a right-handed sneutrino is also present within the fundamental 27-dimensional representation of E_6. Through its sizable couplings to the Z', the dark matter is predicted to possess an elastic scattering cross section with neutrons which can generate the signals reported by the CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA collaborations. To avoid being overproduced in the early universe, the dark matter must annihilate to leptons through the exchange of charged or neutral fermions which appear in the 27 of E_6, providing an excellent fit to the gamma ray spectrum observed from the Galactic Center by the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope.

Angular distributions in $D_s^*$ decays

The reaction $e^+ e^- \to (D_s^{*+} D_s^- + {\rm c.c.})$ has been used with great success at the CLEO-c detector, and will be a source of valuable future data from the BES-III detector, to obtain information about the properties and decays of the $D_s$ and $D_s^*$. The angular distributions of the $D_s^*$ and the final-state particles in $D_s^* \to D_s γ$ are needed to model the decays properly, to confirm the spin-parity assignment $J^P(D_s^*) = 1^-$, and to model the acceptance for the rare process $D_s^* \to D_s e^+ e^-$. This note presents some of the necessary expressions.

Relative Phases in $D^0\to K^0 K^-π^+$ AND $D^0\to\ok K^+π^-$ Dalitz Plots

The processes $D^0\to K^0 K^-π^+$ and $D^0\to\ok K^+π^-$ involve intermediate vector resonances whose amplitudes and phases are related to each other via flavor SU(3) symmetry. A closer look at Dalitz plots for these two processes is expected to shed light on our understanding of the usefulness of flavor SU(3) symmetry in studying charm decays. In the present work we use data from the BaBar Collaboration's publication in 2002. The goal is to reproduce Dalitz plot amplitudes and phases assuming flavor SU(3) symmetry and compare them with experiment. While an SU(3) fit is able to account for the relative magnitudes of the amplitudes for the decays $D^0 \to K^{*-}K^+$ and $D^0 \to K^{*+}K^-$, the current BaBar sample (based on an integrated luminosity of only 22 fb$^{-1}$) provides only 1--$2 σ$ evidence for the decays $D^0\to K^{*0}\ok$ and $D^0 \to \oks K^0$, with magnitudes and phases not in accord with predictions. The CLEO collaboration could potentially produce an analysis using data with better statistics, and an analysis based on the full BaBar sample (more than 20 times the 2002 value) should definitively settle the question.

Triple product asymmetries in K, D_(s) and B_(s) decays

One distinguishes between "true" CP violating triple product (TP) asymmetries which require no strong phases and "fake" asymmetries which are due to strong phases but require no CP violation. So far a single true TP asymmetry has been measured in $K_L\to π^+π^- e^+e^-$. A general discussion is presented for T-odd TP asymmetries in four-body decays. It is shown that TP asymmetries vanish for two identical and kinematically indistinguishable particles in the final state. Two examples are $D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ and $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+π^0$. A non-zero TP asymmetry can be expected when non-trivial kinematic correlations exist, as in the decay $K_L \to e^+ e^- e^+ e^-$. Triple product asymmetries measured in charmed particle decays indicate an interesting pattern of final-state interactions. We reiterate a discussion of TP asymmetries in $B$ meson decays to two vector mesons each decaying to a pseudoscalar pair, extending results to decays where one vector meson decays into a lepton pair. We derive expressions for time-dependent TP asymmetries for neutral B decays to flavorless states in terms of the neutral $B$ mass difference $Δm$ and the width-difference $ΔΓ$. Time-integrated true CP violating asymmetries, measurable for untagged $B_s$ decays, are shown to be suppressed by neither $Γ_s/Δm_s$ nor $ΔΓ_s/Γ_s$ if transversity amplitudes for CP-even and CP-odd states involve different weak phases. In contrast, fake asymmetries require flavor tagging and are suppressed by the former ratio when time-integrated. We apply our results to $B\to K^*ϕ$ and $B_s\toϕϕ$ data and suggest an application for $B_s\to J/ψϕ$.

Background check for anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry

The D0 Collaboration has reported an excess of roughly one percent of $μ^- μ^-$ pairs over $μ^+ μ^+$ pairs in $\bar p p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, when known backgrounds are subtracted. This excess, if ascribed to CP violation in meson-antimeson mixing of non-strange or strange neutral $B$ mesons, is about 40 times that expected in the Standard Model (SM). We propose a null test, based on a tight restriction on the muon impact parameter $b$, to confirm that this excess is indeed due to $B$ mesons. If the asymmetry is due to anomalous CP violation in $B_s$-$\bar B_s$ mixing then a tight restriction on $b$ would increase by a factor two the net asymmetry from neutral $B$ mixing, while the sample of dimuons from neutral $B$ decays will be reduced significantly relative to background events.

Calculating Phases Between B => K* pi Amplitudes

A phase $ΔΦ$ between amplitudes for $B^0 \to K^{*0} π^0$ and $B^0 \to K^{*+} π^-$ plays a crucial role in a method for constraining Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters. We present a general argument for destructive interference between amplitudes for $B^0 \to K^{*+} π^-$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} π^0$ forming together a smaller $I(K^* π) = 3/2$ amplitude. Applying flavor SU(3) and allowing for conservative theoretical uncertainties, we obtain lower limits on $|ΔΦ|$ and its charge-conjugate. Values of these two phases favored by the BaBar Collaboration are in good agreement with our bounds.

Cross ratios between Dalitz plot amplitudes in three-body $D^0$ decays

A recent study of $D^0 \to π^0 K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to K_S π^+π^-$ describes a flavor-symmetric approach to calculate relative amplitudes and phases, for characteristic interferences between $D$ decays to a light pseudoscalar $P$ and a light vector $V$, on Dalitz plots for $D \to PPP$ decays. The flavor-symmetric approach used an earlier fit to $D \to P V$ decay rates and was found to agree fairly well with experiments for $D^0 \to π^0 π^+ π^-$ but not as well for $D^0 \to π^0 K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to K_S π^+π^-$. The present work extends this investigation to include $D^0 \to K^- π^+ π^0$. We use an SU(3) flavor symmetry relationship between ratios of Cabibbo-favored (CF) $D \to P V$ amplitudes in $D^0 \to K^- π^+ π^0$ and ratios of singly- Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) $D \to P V$ amplitudes in $D^0 \to π^0 K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^0 π^+ π^-$. We observe that experimental values for Dalitz plot cross ratios obey this relationship up to discrepancies noted previously. The need for an updated Dalitz plot analysis of $D^0 \to K^- π^+ π^0$ is emphasized.

Dalitz Plot Structure in $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$

The BaBar Collaboration has pointed out that $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$ is dominated by an isospin-zero final state, leading to nearly complete depletion of the Dalitz plot along all three diagonals. In flavor-SU(3) approaches to charmed particle decays to a light vector and a light pseudoscalar particle, this behavior is seen, but does not appear to have a fundamental origin. Instead, it arises as a result of approximate cancellation of higher-isospin combinations of several types of amplitudes: color-favored tree, color-suppressed tree, and exchange. Interpretation in terms of a direct-channel effect would require an exotic resonance, with spin, parity, and charge-congjugation eigenvalues $J^{PC} = 0^{--}$.

Electroweak Constraints from Atomic Parity Violation and Neutrino Scattering

Precision electroweak physics can provide fertile ground for uncovering new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). One area in which new physics can appear is in so-called "oblique corrections", i.e., next-to-leading order expansions of bosonic propagators corresponding to vacuum polarization. One may parametrize their effects in terms of quantities $S$ and $T$ that discriminate between conservation and non-conservation of isospin. This provides a means of comparing the relative contributions of precision electroweak experiments to constraints on new physics. Given the prevalence of strongly $T$-sensitive experiments, there is an acute need for further constraints on $S$, such as provided by atomic parity-violating experiments on heavy atoms. We evaluate constraints on $S$ arising from recently improved calculations in the Cs atom. We show that the top quark mass $m_t$ provides stringent constraints on $S$ within the context of the Standard Model. We also consider the potential contributions of next-generation neutrino scattering experiments to improved $(S,T)$ constraints.

Forward-Backward Asymmetry of Top Quark Pair Production

We adopt a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to examine various new physics models which can generate the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production observed at the Tevatron by the CDF Collaboration. We study the following new physics models: (1) exotic gluon $G^\prime$, (2) extra $Z^\prime$ boson with flavor-conserving interaction, (3) extra $Z^\prime$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$Z^\prime$ interaction, (4) extra $W^\prime$ with flavor-violating $d$-$t$-$W^\prime$ interaction, and (5) extra scalars $S$ and $S^\pm$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$S$ and $d$-$t$-$S^\pm$ interactions. After combining the forward-backward asymmetry with the measurement of the top pair production cross section and the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass distribution at the Tevatron, we find that an axial vector exotic gluon $G^\prime$ of mass about $1 {\rm TeV}$ or $2 {\rm TeV}$ or a $W^\prime$ of mass about $2 {\rm TeV}$ offer an improvement over the Standard Model. The other models considered do not fit the data significantly better than the Standard Model. We also emphasize a few points which have been long ignored in the literature for new physics searches: (1) heavy resonance width effects, (2) renormalization scale dependence, and (3) NLO corrections to the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass spectrum. We argue that these three effects are crucial to test or exclude new physics effects in the top quark pair asymmetry.

Leptonic Decays of Charged Pseudoscalar Mesons

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and anti-quark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+}$ in the charm sector. Currently, these tests are unsatisfactory. The lighter $π$ and $K$ mesons provide stringent comparisons between experiment and theory due to the accuracy of both the measurements and the theoretical predictions. An abridged version of this review was prepared for the Particle Data Group's 2010 edition.

Ratios of heavy hadron semileptonic decay rates

Ratios of charmed meson and baryon semileptonic decay rates appear to be satisfactorily described by considering only the lowest-lying (S-wave) hadronic final states and assuming the kinematic factor describing phase space suppression is the same as that for free quarks. For example, the rate for $D_s$ semileptonic decay is known to be $(17.0 \pm 5.3)%$ lower than those for $D^0$ or $D^+$, and the model accounts for this difference. When applied to hadrons containing $b$ quarks, this method implies that the $B_s$ semileptonic decay rate is about 1% higher than that of the nonstrange $B$ mesons. This small difference thus suggests surprisingly good local quark-hadron duality for $B$ semileptonic decays, complementing the expectation based on inclusive quark-hadron duality that these differences in rates should not exceed a few tenths of a percent. For $Λ_b$ semileptonic decay, however, the inclusive rate is predicted to be about 13% greater than that of the nonstrange $B$ mesons. This value, representing a considerable departure from a calculation using a heavy quark expansion, is close to the corresponding experimental ratio $Γ(Λ_b)/ \bar Γ(B) = 1.13 \pm 0.03$ of total decay rates.

Relative phases in Dalitz plot amplitudes for $D^0 \to K_S π^+ π^-$ and $D^0 \to π^0 K^+ K^-$

Relative phases of amplitudes for $D$ meson decays to a light pseudoscalar meson $P$ and a light vector meson $V$ decaying to two pseudoscalar mesons will lead to characteristic interferences on the three-body Dalitz plot. These phases may be compared with predictions of a flavor-symmetric treatment which extracts contributing amplitudes and their relative phases from a fit to $D \to PV$ decay rates. Good agreement was found previously for the cases of $D^0 \to K^- π^+ π^0$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$. The present work is devoted to the decays $D^0 \to K_S π^+ π^-$ and $D^0 \to π^0 K^+ K^-$, for which agreement is not found. Several suggestions are offered for this discrepancy.

Second order direct CP asymmetry in B_(s) -> X l nu

A direct CP asymmetry in inclusive semileptonic B_(s) decays vanishes by CPT to lowest order in weak interactions. Calculating the asymmetry at second order weak interactions in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa framework we find A_{sl} = (-3.2 \pm 0.9) x 10^{-9}. A maximal asymmetry which is two orders of magnitude larger is estimated in a left-right symmetric model. This quite generic upper bound implies negligible effects on wrong-sign lepton asymmetries in B^0 and B_s decays.

$D_s$ Inclusive Decays

The availability of branching fractions for a large majority of $D_s$ decays permits the prediction of inclusive branching fractions. This is achieved with the help of a modest amount of input from an isospin statistical model applied to non-resonant multibody $D_s$ decays. A systematic uncertainty in these mostly small branching ratios is estimated by comparing predictions of this model with those of a model involving quark-antiquark pair production. The calculated inclusive branching fractions can be compared with data (for example, from a large sample of $D_s^+ D_s^{*-} + D_s^{*+} D_s^-$ obtained by the CLEO Collaboration) and examined for specific final states which can shed light on strong and weak decay mechanisms.

$ω$-$ϕ$ mixing and weak annihilation in $D_s$ decays

The mixing between nonstrange and strange quark wavefunctions in the $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons leads to a small predicted branching ratio $\b(D_s^+ \to ωe^+ ν_e) = {\cal O}(10^{-4})(δ/3.34^\circ)^2$, where $δ$ is the mixing angle. The value $δ= -3.34^\circ$ is obtained in a mass-independent analysis, while a mass-dependent analysis gives $δ= -0.45^\circ$ at $m(ω)$ and $-4.64^\circ$ at $m(ϕ)$. Measurement of this branching ratio thus can tell whether the decay is dominated by $ϕ$--$ω$ mixing, or additional nonperturbative processes commonly known as "weak annihilation" (WA) contribute. The role of WA in the decay $D_s^+ \to ωπ^+$ and its possible use in estimating WA effects in $D_s^+ \to ωe^+ ν_e$ are also discussed. Assuming that the dynamics of WA in $D_s^+ \to ωπ^+$ is similar in $D_s^+ \to ωe^+ ν_e$ we estimate $\b(D_s^+ \to ωe^+ ν_e) = (1.3 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$.

Charmed meson decays to two pseudoscalars

A recent update of data on the decays of $D^0$, $D^+$, and $D_s^+$ to pairs of light pseudoscalars calls for a renewed analysis of key decay amplitudes and tests of flavor symmetry. The present data change our previous understanding of relative phases between amplitudes that describe Cabibbo-favored decays of the charmed mesons. The new data also seem to favor a smaller octet-singlet mixing angle for the $η$ and $η'$ mesons when singly-Cabibbo-suppressed processes are taken into account. We also discuss the effects of the new data on interference between Cabibbo-favored and doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays.

The Quark Model and $b$ Baryons

The recent observation at the Tevatron of $Σ_b^{\pm}$ ($uub$ and $ddb$) baryons within 2 MeV of the predicted $Σ_b - Λ_b$ splitting and of $Ξ_b^-$ $(dsb)$ baryons at the Tevatron within a few MeV of predictions has provided strong confirmation for a theoretical approach based on modeling the color hyperfine interaction. The prediction of $M(Ξ^-_b) = 5790$ to 5800 MeV is reviewed and similar methods used to predict the masses of the excited states $Ξ_b^\prime$ and $Ξ_b^*$. The main source of uncertainty is the method used to estimate the mass difference $m_b - m_c$ from known hadrons. We verify that corrections due to the details of the interquark potential and to $Ξ_b$--$Ξ_b^\prime$ mixing are small. For S-wave $qqb$ states we predict $M(Ω_b) = 6052.1 \pm 5.6$ MeV, $M(Ω^*_b) = 6082.8 \pm 5.6$ MeV, and $M(Ξ_b^0) = 5786.7 \pm 3.0$ MeV. For states with one unit of orbital angular momentum between the $b$ quark and the two light quarks we predict $M(Λ_{b[1/2]}) = 5929 \pm 2$ MeV, $M(Λ_{b[3/2]}) = 5940 \pm 2$ MeV, $M(Ξ_{b[1/2]}) = 6106 \pm 4$ MeV, and $M(Ξ_{b[3/2]}) = 6115 \pm 4$ MeV. Results are compared with those of other recent approaches.

The $b \to s$ penguin amplitude in charmless $B \to PP$ decays

The $b \to s$ penguin amplitude affects a number of $B$ meson decays to two pseudoscalar ($P$) mesons in which potential anomalies are being watched carefully, though none has yet reached a statistically compelling level. These include (a) a rate for $B^0 \to K^0 π^0$ which is slightly enhanced with respect to expectations; (b) a time-dependent CP asymmetry parameter $S$ for $B^0 \to K^0 π^0$ which is low in comparison with the expected value of $\sin 2 β\simeq 0.73$, and (c) a similar deviation in the parameter $S$ for $B^0 \to η' K_S$. These and related phenomena involving vector mesons in the final state are discussed in a unified way in and beyond the Standard Model. Future experiments which would conclusively indicate the presence of new physics are identified. Several of these involve decays of the strange $B$ meson $B_s$. In the Standard Model we note an approximate sum rule for CP rate differences in $B^0\to K^+π^-, B^+\to K^+π^0$ and $B^0\to K^0π^0$, predicting a negative sign for the latter asymmetry.

Charmless $B \to PP$ decays using flavor SU(3) symmetry

The decays of $B$ mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar ($P$) mesons are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into account in tree ($T$) amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3) is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to $B \to ππ$ and $B \to K π$ branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed ($C$), penguin ($P$), and electroweak penguin ($P_{EW}$) amplitudes. Crucial additional terms for describing processes involving $η$ and $η'$ include a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude ($S$) as proposed earlier and a penguin amplitude $P_{tu}$ associated with intermediate $t$ and $u$ quarks. For the $B^+ \to π^+ η'$ mode a term $S_{tu}$ associated with intermediate $t$ and $u$ quarks also may be needed. Values of the weak phase $γ$ are obtained consistent with an earlier analysis of $B \to VP$ decays, where $V$ denotes a vector meson, and with other analyses of CKM parameters.

CP asymmetries in $B^0(t)\to π^+ π^-$ are studied by relating this process in broken flavor SU(3) with $B^+\to K^0π^+$ and $B^0\to K^+π^-$. Using two different scenarios for SU(3) breaking, we show that the range of values of the weak phase $α$ permitted by the measured asymmetries overlaps with that obtained from other CKM constraints, supporting the KM origin of the asymmetries. We evaluate the potential precision of this method to improve the determination of $α$.

Charmless $B \to VP$ Decays Using Flavor SU(3) Symmetry

The decays of $B$ mesons to a charmless vector ($V$) and pseudoscalar ($P$) meson are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3) in which symmetry breaking is taken into account through ratios of decay constants in tree ($T$) amplitudes. The magnitudes and relative phases of tree and penguin amplitudes are extracted from data; the symmetry assumption is tested; and predictions are made for rates and CP asymmetries in as-yet-unseen decay modes. A key assumption for which we perform some tests and suggest others is a relation between penguin amplitudes in which the spectator quark is incorporated into either a pseudoscalar meson or a vector meson. Values of $γ$ slightly restricting the range currently allowed by fits to other data are favored, but outside this range there remain acceptable solutions which cannot be excluded solely on the basis of present $B \to VP$ experiments.

Previous analyses of Run I data from the Fermilab Tevatron are used to set lower limits of 100--200 GeV/c^2 on the mass of such quarks, depending on assumptions about mixing with Standard Model quarks and the mass of the Higgs boson. For future Tevatron data (E_{c.m.} = 1.96 TeV) the corresponding mass range is (100-270, 100-320) GeV/c^2 for (1, 10) fb^{-1}. At the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) (E_{c.m.} = 14 TeV, 100 fb^{-1}), an analysis of flavor-changing neutral-current decay modes should probe an $h$ quark mass range of 100-1100 GeV/c^2.

Heavy bottom squark mass in the light gluino and light bottom squark scenario

Restrictive upper bounds on the heavy bottom squark mass when the gluino and one bottom squark are both light are based on the predicted reduction of $R_b$ (the fraction of $Z$ hadronic decays to $b \bar b$ pairs) in such a scenario. These bounds are found to be relaxed by the process $Z \to b\bar{\tilde b}{\tilde g}/{\bar b}{\tilde b}{\tilde g}$, which may partially compensate for the reduction of $R_b$. The relaxation of bounds on the top squark and the scale-dependence of the strong coupling constant are also discussed.

I-spin, U-spin, and penguin dominance in $B \to K K \bar K$

Isospin and U-spin symmetries are useful approximations for studying penguin dominance in $B$ meson decays to three kaons, $B\to KK\bar K$. We point out certain subtleties in treating these decays in these approximations. Resulting uncertainties are discussed in determining the CP content of the final state in $B \to K^+K^-K_S$, and in relating the CP asymmetry in this process to the value of $\sin 2β$.

Interpreting the time-dependent CP asymmetry in $B^0 \to π^0 K_S$

Flavor SU(3) is used for studying the time-dependent CP asymmetry in $B^0 \to π^0 K_S$ by relating this process to $B^0\to π^0π^0$ and $B^0 \to K^+K^-$. We calculate correlated bounds on $S_{πK} - \sin 2β$ and $C_{πK}$, with maximal magnitudes of 0.2 and 0.3, where $S_{πK}$ and $C_{πK}$ are coefficients of $\sinΔmt$ and $\cosΔmt$ in the asymmetry. Stronger upper limits on $B^0 \to K^+K^-$ are expected to reduce these bounds and to imply nonzero lower limits on these observables. The asymmetry is studied as a function of a strong phase and the weak phase $γ$.

Rates and Asymmetries in $B \to K π$ Decays

We discuss a potential discrepancy in an approximate relation among $B \to K π$ rates which, with increased statistical significance, would imply new physics in $ΔI=1$ transitions. An approximate relation between CP-violating rate differences in $B^0/\bar{B}^0 \to K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm}π^0$ is used to combine these rate differences to reduce upper limits on the two CP asymmetries. These rates and asymmetries are used to update bounds on the CKM phase $γ$.

The factorizable amplitude in $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$

Using the measured spectrum shape for $B \to π\ell ν$, the rate for $B^+ \to π^+ π^0$, information on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and theoretical inputs from factorization and lattice gauge theory, we obtain an improved estimate of the ``tree'' contribution to $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. We find the branching ratio $\b(B^0 \to π^+ π^-)|_{\rm tree} = (5.25^{+1.67}_{-0.50}) \times 10^{-6}$, to be compared with the experimental value $\b(B^0 \to π^+ π^-) = (4.55 \pm 0.44) \times 10^{-6}$. The fit implies $|V_{ub}| = (3.62 \pm 0.34) \times 10^{-3}$. Implications for tree-penguin interference in $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$ and for other charmless $B$ decays are discussed.

Two-Body Charmless B Decays Involving eta and eta'

We discuss implications of recent experimental data for B decays into two pseudoscalar mesons, with emphasis on those with $η$ and $η'$ in the final states. Applying a U-spin argument, we show that tree and penguin amplitudes, both in $B^+ \to π^+ η$ and in $B^+ \to π^+ η'$, are of comparable magnitudes. Nontrivial relative weak and strong phases between the tree-level amplitudes and penguin-loop amplitudes in the $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} η$ modes are extracted. We predict possible values for the averaged branching ratio and CP asymmetry of the $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} η'$ modes. We test the assumption of a singlet-penguin amplitude with the same weak and strong phases as the QCD penguin in explaining the large branching ratios of $η' K$ modes, and show that it is consistent with current branching ratio and CP asymmetry data of the $B^+ \to (π^0, η, η') K^+$ modes. We also show that the strong phases of the singlet-penguin and tree-level amplitudes can be extracted with further input of electroweak penguin contributions and a sufficiently well-known branching ratio of the $ηK^+$ mode. Using SU(3) flavor symmetry, we also estimate required data samples to detect modes that have not yet been seen.

Conference Summary (5th Int. Conf. on Hyperons, Charm, and Beauty Hadrons)

A summary is given of the 5th International Conference on Hyperons, Charm and Beauty Hadrons held in Vancouver, Canada, June 25th to 29th, 2002. This series of conferences began in 1995 in Strasbourg, France, in large part through the efforts of A. Fridman, to whose memory this talk is dedicated. Topics reviewed include kaon and hyperon physics, charm and beauty production and decays, heavy baryons, the physics of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and CP violation, and precision electroweak analyses. An attempt is made to combine a review of the high points of the conference with a more general overview of the field and its prospects.

Convention-independent study of CP-violating asymmetries in $B \to ππ$

CP-violating asymmetries in the decay $B^0(t)\to π^+ π^-$ are a potentially rich source of information about both strong and weak phases. In a previous treatment by the present authors use was made of an assumption about the relative magnitude of tree and penguin amplitudes contributing to this process. This assumption involved an ambiguity in relating the tree amplitude to the amplitude for $B \to π\ell ν$. It is shown here that one can avoid this assumption, which adopted a particular convention for tree and penguin amplitudes, and that the results are convention-independent.

Light Gluino and the Running of alpha_s

A gluino in the mass range 12--16 GeV combined with a light (2--5.5 GeV) bottom squark, as has been proposed recently to explain an excess of b quark hadroproduction, would affect the momentum-scale dependence (``running'') of the strong coupling constant alpha_s in such a way as to raise its value at M_Z by about 0.014 +/- 0.001. If one combines sources of uncertainty at low (m_b) and high (M_Z) mass scales, one can only distinguish such an effect at slightly more than the 2 sigma level. Prospects for improvement in this situation, which include better lattice QCD simulations and better measurements at M_Z, are discussed.

Production of singlet P-wave $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ states

No spin-singlet $b \bar b$ quarkonium state has yet been observed. In this paper we discuss the production of the singlet P-wave $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ $^1P_1$ states $h_b$ and $h_c$. We consider two possibilities. In the first the $^1P_1$ states are produced via the electromagnetic cascades $\ups(3S) \to η_b(2S) + γ\to h_b + γγ\to η_b +γγγ$ and $ψ'\to η_c' + γ\to h_c + γγ\to η_c + γγγ$. A more promising process consists of single pion transition to the $^1P_1$ state followed by the radiative transition to the $1^1S_0$ state: $\ups(3S)\to h_b + π^0 \to η_b + π^0 +γ$ and $ψ' \to h_c + π^0 \to η_c + π^0 +γ$. For a million $\ups(3S)$ or $ψ'$'s produced we expect these processes to produce several hundred events.

Charmless Final States and S--D-wave mixing in the $ψ''$

The $\ppp = ψ(3770)$ resonance is expected to be mainly $c \bar c(1^3D_1)$, but tensor forces and coupling to charmed particle pairs can mix it with $\pp(2^3S_1)$ and other states. Implications of this mixing for decays of $\ppp$ to non-charmed final states are discussed. (i) The ratio $Γ(\ppp \to γ+ χ_{c2})/ Γ(\ppp \to γ+ χ_{c0})$ is expected to be highly suppressed if $\ppp$ is a pure D-wave state, and is enchanced by mixing. (ii) The expected decay $\pp \to ρπ$ and other ``missing'' modes can appear as corresponding $\ppp$ partial widths, enhanced by a factor depending on the mixing angle. General arguments then suggest a branching ratio of about 1%, give or take a factor of 2, for charmless hadronic decays of $\ppp$. (iii) Enhancements can appear in penguin amplitudes in B decays, $B \to K η'$ branching ratios, and direct CP-violating asymmetries in $B \to K π$ decays.

Extraction of a Weak Phase from $B \to D^{(*)} π$

To observe CP-violating asymmetries through the interference of a weaker amplitude with a stronger one in $\bo \to D^{(*)} π$ and $\ob \to D^{(*)} π$ decays, one must collect enough events that the intensity associated with the weaker amplitude would be statistically significant. We show that provided the weaker amplitude is measured separately in $B^\pm \to D^{(*)\pm} π^0$ decays, the time-integrated approach requires around $2.5 \cdot 10^8 \ B \bar B$ pairs for measurements of the weak phase $\sin(2β+ γ)$ with an uncertainty of $0.05$ or better. We also determine the optimal conditions for precise $2β+ γ$ measurements and discuss the possibilities for resolving a discrete ambiguity.

Hierarchy and Anarchy in Quark Mass Matrices, or Can Hierarchy Tolerate Anarchy?

The consequences of adding random perturbations (anarchy) to a baseline hierarchical model of quark masses and mixings are explored. Even small perturbations of the order of 5% of the smallest non-zero element can already give deviations significantly affecting parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, so any process generating the anarchy should in general be limited to this order of magnitude. The regularities of quark masses and mixings thus appear to be far from a generic feature of randomness in the mass matrices, and more likely indicate an underlying order.

Information on $B \to ππ$ Provided by the Semileptonic Process $B \to πl ν$

Analysis of the present data on the semileptonic process $B \to π\ell ν$ indicates that they have not yet reached the precision to provide adequate information on the $B \to π$ form factor $F_+(q^2)$, which for $q^2 = m_π^2$ is known to be related to the factorized color-favored (``$T$'', or ``tree'') contribution to $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. It is shown here that with around 500 $B \to π\ell ν$ events in which rate and spectrum are measured one can improve the accuracy of $T$ by a significant amount. A recent CLEO determination of the $D^* D π$ coupling constant is compared with an earlier prediction, and its role in the description of the $B \to π$ form factors is noted. When combined with an estimate of the penguin amplitude (``$P$'') obtained using flavor SU(3) symmetry from $B \to K π$ decays, information on $T$ allows one to gauge the effects of the penguin amplitude on extraction of the weak phase $α= ϕ_2$ from the time-dependent CP-violating rate asymmetry in $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$. The constraint on $α$ implied by a recent experimental result on this asymmetry is described.

Production of the $η_b(nS)$ states

The rates for magnetic dipole (M1) transitions $Υ(nS) \to η_b(n'S) + γ$, $n' \le n$, are compared. The photon energies for allowed ($n' = n$) M1 transitions are very small, so hindered ($n' < n$) transitions could be more favorable for discovering the $η_b(1S,2S)$. The question then arises whether $Υ(2S)$ or $Υ(3S)$ is a better source of $η_b(1S)$. Whereas one nonrelativistic model favors $η_b(1S)$ production from $Υ(2S)$, this advantage is lost when relativistic corrections are taken into account, and is not common to all sets of wave functions even in the purely nonrelativistic limit. Thus, the prospects for discovering $η_b(1S)$ in $Υ(3S)$ radiative decays could be comparable to those in $Υ(2S)$ decays. We also discuss a suggestion for discovering the $η_b$ via $Υ(3S) \to h_b(^1P_1) ππ$, followed by $h_b \to η_b γ$.

Production of the D-wave $b \bar b$ states

The first and second families of D-wave $b \bar b$ quarkonium states are expected to have masses near 10.16 and 10.44 GeV/$c^2$. The accuracy of these predictions is discussed, and the prospects of two methods for producing these states in electron-positron collisions are updated. Direct scans in the $e^+ e^-$ center-of-mass can give rise to the $^3D_1$ states. The $1^3D_J$ states have also been searched for in the electromagnetic cascades from $\ups(3S) \to γχ'_b \to γγ^3D_J$. The sample of $\ups(3S)$ decays required to definitively observe the $1^3D_J$ states is found to be only somewhat greater than the present world's total.

U-Spin Symmetry in Doubly Cabibbo-Suppressed Charmed Meson Decays

We prove a U-spin amplitude triangle relation among doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) charmed meson decays, $D^0\to K^+π^-, D^0 \to K^0π^0$ and $D^+_s \to K^0 K^+$, congruent to an isospin relation among corresponding Cabibbo-favored (CF) decays. U-spin breaking in relative phases between CF and DCS amplitudes affects time-dependent studies of $D^0-\od$ mixing. Comparison of final state phase patterns in DCS and CF amplitude triangles, which can shed some light on these phases, is carried out in a phenomenological framework incorporating resonance contributions.

Updated Analysis of Some Two-Body Charmless B Decays

New data from the BaBar, Belle, and CLEO Collaborations on B decays to two-body charmless final states are analyzed, with the following consequences: (1) The penguin amplitude which dominates the decay $B^+ \to π^+ K^{*0}$ has a magnitude similar to that dominating $B^+ \to π^+ K^0$. (2) The decay $B^+ \to π^+ η$, a good candidate for observing direct CP violation, should be detectable at present levels of sensitivity. (3) The decays $B^+ \to η' K^+$ and $B^+ \to ηK^{*+}$ are sufficiently similar in rate to the corresponding decays $B^0 \to η' K^0$ and $B^0 \to ηK^{*0}$, respectively, that one cannot yet infer the need for ``tree'' amplitudes $t'$ contributing to the $B^+$ but not the $B^0$ decays. Statistical requirements for observing this and other examples of tree-penguin interference are given. (4) Whereas the $B^+ \to η' K^+$ and $B^0 \to η' K^0$ rates cannot be accounted for by the penguin amplitude $p'$ alone but require an additional flavor-singlet penguin contribution $s'$, no such flavor-singlet penguin contribution is yet called for in the decays $B^+ \to ηK^{*+}$ or $B^0 \to ηK^{*0}$. Predictions for the rates for $B^+ \to η' K^{*+}$ and $B^0 \to η' K^{*0}$ are given which would allow one to gauge the importance of these flavor-singlet penguin amplitudes.

Tests for Coherence in Neutral B Meson Decays

A density-matrix method for the study of tagged states of neutral B mesons with arbitrary coherence properties is applied to several examples, including $e^+ e^-$ production both at and above the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, and hadronic production. In the absence of coherence the only term modulating the exponential decay of a neutral B meson behaves as $\cos Δm t$, while a $\sin Δm t$ modulation is a signal of partial or full coherence. Decays to CP eigenstates are needed to fully specify the density matrix. We relate these results to more familiar expressions for the cases of the $Υ(4S)$ and incoherent production.

The Role of $B_s \to K π$ in Determining the Weak Phase $γ$

The decay rates for $B^0 \to K^+ π^-$, $B^+ \to K^0 π^+$, and the charge-conjugate processes were found to provide information on the weak phase $γ\equiv {\rm Arg}(V_{ub}^*)$ when the ratio $r$ of weak tree and penguin amplitudes was taken from data on $B \to ππ$ or semileptonic $B \to π$ decays. Final-State Phases in Charmed Meson Two-Body Nonleptonic Decays

Observed decay rates indicate large phase differences among the amplitudes for the charge states in $D \to \bar K π$ and $D \to \bar K^* π$ but relatively real amplitudes in the charge states for $D \to \bar K ρ$. This feature is traced using an SU(3) flavor analysis to a sign flip in the contribution of one of the amplitudes contributing to the latter processes in comparison with its contribution to the other two sets. This amplitude may be regarded as an effect of rescattering and is found to be of magnitude comparable to others contributing to charmed particle two-body nonleptonic decays.

Improved Tests of Relations for Baryon Isomultiplet Splittings

The least well-known octet baryon mass is $M_{Ξ^0} = 1314.9 \pm 0.6$ MeV. The prospect of an improved measurement of its mass by the KTeV experimental program at Fermilab, and opportunities for improvements in charged and excited hyperon and $Δ$ mass measurements, makes it timely to re-examine descriptions of isospin splittings in baryons containing light quarks. It is possible by examining such relations as the Coleman-Glashow relation $M_n - M_p + M_{Ξ^-} - M_{Ξ^0} = M_{Σ^-} - M_{Σ^+}$ to distinguish between those models making use of one- or two-body effects involving quarks and those involving genuine three-body effects. A hierarchy based on an expansion in $1/N_c$, where $N_c$ is the number of quark colors, is useful in this respect. The present status of other quark-model mass relations involving $Λ- Σ^0$ mixing and the baryon decuplet is also noted, and the degree to which one can determine parameters such as quark mass differences and individual electromagnetic contributions to splittings is discussed.

Rescattering Information from $B \to K \bar K$ Decays

A test for these effects based on the processes $B^\pm \to K^\pm K$ has been suggested. B Decays to Charmless VP Final States

These are the first reported decays to charmless final states involving a vector (V) and a pseudoscalar (P) meson. The implications of these decays for others of B mesons to charmless VP final states are explored. Weak Phases From B Decays to Kaons and Charged Pions

Phases of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix can be obtained using decays of $B$ mesons to $π^+ π^-$, $π^\pm K^\mp$, and $π^+ K^0$ or $π^- \overline{K}^0$. For $B^0~{\rm or}~ \overline{B}^0 \to π^+ π^-$, one identifies the flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at time of production and studies the time-dependence of the decay rate. The other processes are self-tagging and only their rates need be measured. By assuming flavor SU(3) symmetry and first-order SU(3) breaking, one can separately determine the phases $γ\equiv {\rm Arg}~V_{ub}^*$ and $α= π- β- γ$, where $β\equiv {\rm Arg}~V_{td}^*$. Special cases include the vanishing of strong interaction phase differences between amplitudes, the possibility of recovering partial information when $π^+ π^-$ and $π^\pm K^\mp$ decays cannot be distinguished from one another, and the use of a correlation between $γ$ and $α$ in the region of allowed parameters.

Charmed Baryons with $J = 3/2$

The width of a recently discovered excited charmed-strange baryon, a candidate for a state $Ξ_c^*$ with spin 3/2, is calculated. In the absence of configuration mixing between the ground-state (spin-1/2) charmed-strange baryon $Ξ_c^{(a)}$ and the spin-1/2 state $Ξ_c^{(s)}$ lying about 95 MeV above it, one finds $\tilde Γ(Ξ^*_c \to Ξ_c^{(a)} π) = (3/4) \tilde Γ(Ξ^* \to Ξπ)$ and $\tilde Γ(Ξ^*_c \to Ξ_c^{(s)} π) = (1/4) \tilde Γ(Ξ^* \to Ξπ)$, where the tilde denotes the partial width with kinematic factors removed. Assuming a kinematic factor for P-wave decay of $p_{\rm cm}^3$, one predicts $Γ(Ξ^*_c \to Ξ_c^{(a)} π) = 2.3$ MeV, while the $Ξ^*_c \to Ξ_c^{(s)} π$ channel is closed. Determining the Weak Phase $γ$ From Charged $B$ Decays

A quadrangle relation is shown to be satisfied by the amplitudes for $B^+ \to π^0 K^+,~π^+ K^0,~ηK^+$, and $η' K^+$. By comparison with the corresponding relation satisfied by $B^-$ decay amplitudes, it is shown that the relative phases of all the amplitudes can be determined up to discrete ambiguities. Making use of an SU(3) relation between amplitudes contributing to the above decays and those contributing to $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} π^0$, it is then shown that one can determine the weak phase $γ\equiv {\rm Arg} (V_{ub}^* V_{cb}/V_{us}^* V_{cs})$, where $V$ is the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix describing the charge-changing weak interactions between the quarks $(u,c,t)$ and $(d,s,b)$.

ELECTROWEAK PENGUINS AND TWO-BODY B DECAYS

We discuss the role of electroweak penguins in $B$ decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons. We confirm that the extraction of the weak phase $α$ through the isospin analysis involving $B\toππ$ decays is largely unaffected by such operators. However, the methods proposed to obtain weak and strong phases by relating $B\toππ$, $B\toπK$ and $B\to KK$ decays through flavor SU(3) will be invalidated if electroweak penguins are large. We show that, although the introduction of electroweak penguin contributions introduces no new amplitudes of flavor SU(3), there are a number of ways to experimentally measure the size of such effects. Finally, using SU(3) amplitude relations we present a new way of measuring the weak angle $γ$ which holds even in the presence of electroweak penguins.

Impact of Atomic Parity Violation Measurements on Precision Electroweak Physics

The impact of atomic parity violation experiments on determination of the weak mixing parameter $\sin^2 θ$ and the Peskin-Takeuchi parameters $S$ and $T$ is reassessed in the light of recent electroweak measurements at LEP, SLAC, and Fermilab. Since the weak charge $Q_W$ provides unique information on $S$, its determination with a factor of four better accuracy than present levels can have a noticeable effect on global fits. However, the measurement of $ΔQ_W / Q_W$ for two different isotopes provides primarily information on $\sin^2 θ$. To specify this quantity to an accuracy of $\pm 0.0004$, comparable to that now provided by other electroweak experiments, one would have to determine $ΔQ_W/Q_W$ in cesium to about 0.1\% of its value, with comparable demands for other nuclei. The relative merits of absolute measurements of $Q_W$ and isotope ratios for discovering effects of new gauge bosons are noted briefly.

Spacings of Quarkonium Levels with the Same Principal Quantum Number

The spacings between bound-state levels of the Schrödinger equation with the same principal quantum number $N$ but orbital angular momenta $\ell$ differing by unity are found to be nearly equal for a wide range of power potentials $V = λr^ν$, with $E_{N \ell} \approx F(ν, N) - G(ν,N) \ell$. Semiclassical approximations are in accord with this behavior. The result is applied to estimates of masses for quarkonium levels which have not yet been observed, including the 2P $c \bar c$ states and the 1D $b \bar b$ states.

Decays of $B$ Mesons to Two Light Pseudoscalars

The decays $B \to PP$, where $P$ denotes a pseudoscalar meson, are analyzed, with emphasis on charmless final states. Numerous triangle relations for amplitudes hold within SU(3) symmetry, relating (for example) the decays $B^+ \to π^+ π^0,~ π^0 K^+$, and $π^+ K^0$. Such relations can improve the possibilities for early detection of $CP$-violating asymmetries. Within the context of a graphical analysis of decays, relations are analyzed among SU(3) amplitudes which hold if some graphs are neglected. One application is that measurements of the rates for the above three $B^+$ decays and their charge-conjugates can be used to determine a weak CKM phase. With measurements of the remaining rates for $B$ decays to $ππ,~πK$, and $K \bar K$, one can obtain two CKM phases and several differences of strong phase shifts.

Framework for Identification of Neutral B Mesons

We introduce a method for the study of CP-violating asymmetries in tagged states of neutral $B$ mesons with arbitrary coherence properties. A set of time-dependent measurements is identified which completely specifies the density matrix of the initial state in a two-component space with basis vectors $B^0$ and $\overline B^0$, and permits a determination of phases in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. For a given tagging configuration, the measurement of decays both to flavor eigenstates and to CP eigenstates provides the necessary information.

Identification of Neutral B Mesons Using Correlated Hadrons

The identification of the flavor of a neutral $B$ meson can make use of hadrons produced nearby in phase space. Examples include the decay of ``$B^{**}$'' resonances or the production of hadrons as a result of the fragmentation process. Some aspects of this method are discussed, including time-dependent effects in neutral $B$ decays to flavor states, to eigenstates of CP and to other states, and the effects of possible coherence between $B^0$ and $\overline{B}^0$ in the initial state. We study the behavior of the leading hadrons in $b$-quark jets and the expected properties of $B^{**}$ resonances. These are extrapolated from the corresponding $D^{**}$ resonances, of whose properties we suggest further studies.
