Symplectic cohomology of compound Du Val singularities

We compute symplectic cohomology for Milnor fibres of certain compound Du Val singularities that admit small resolution by using homological mirror symmetry. Our computations suggest a new conjecture that the existence of a small resolution has strong implications for the symplectic cohomology and conversely. We also use our computations to give a contact invariant of the link of the singularities and thereby distinguish many contact structures on connected sums of $S^2 \times S^3$.

Antiflips, mutations, and unbounded symplectic embeddings of rational homology balls

The Milnor fibre of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a Wahl singularity is a rational homology ball $B_{p,q}$. For a canonically polarised surface of general type $X$, it is known that there are bounds on the number $p$ for which $B_{p,q}$ admits a symplectic embedding into $X$. In this paper, we give a recipe to construct unbounded sequences of symplectically embedded $B_{p,q}$ into surfaces of general type equipped with non-canonical symplectic forms. Ultimately, these symplectic embeddings come from Mori's theory of flips, but we give an interpretation in terms of almost toric structures and mutations of polygons. The key point is that a flip of surfaces, as studied by Hacking, Tevelev and Urzúa, can be formulated as a combination of mutations of an almost toric structure and deformation of the symplectic form.

Constructing local models for Lagrangian torus fibrations

We give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibrations with controlled discriminant locus on certain affine varieties. In particular, we apply our construction in the following ways. We find a Lagrangian torus fibration on the 3-fold negative vertex whose discriminant locus has codimension 2; this provides a local model for finding torus fibrations on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds with codimension 2 discriminant locus. Then, we find a Lagrangian torus fibration on a neighbourhood of the one-dimensional stratum of a simple normal crossing divisor (satisfying certain conditions) such that the base of the fibration is an open subset of the cone over the dual complex of the divisor. This can be used to construct an analogue of the non-archimedean SYZ fibration constructed by Nicaise, Xu and Yu.

Exotic spheres and the topology of symplectomorphism groups

We show that, for certain families $ϕ_{\mathbf{s}}$ of diffeomorphisms of high-dimensional spheres, the commutator of the Dehn twist along the zero-section of $T^*S^n$ with the family of pullbacks $ϕ^*_{\mathbf{s}}$ gives a noncontractible family of compactly-supported symplectomorphisms. In particular, we find examples: where the Dehn twist along a parametrised Lagrangian sphere depends up to Hamiltonian isotopy on its parametrisation; where the symplectomorphism group is not simply-connected, and where the symplectomorphism group does not have the homotopy-type of a finite CW-complex. We show that these phenomena persist for Dehn twists along the standard matching spheres of the $A_m$-Milnor fibre. The nontriviality is detected by considering the action of symplectomorphisms on the space of parametrised Lagrangian submanifolds. We find related examples of symplectic mapping classes for $T^*(S^n\times S^1)$ and of an exotic symplectic structure on $T^*(S^n\times S^1)$ standard at infinity.

Pseudoholomorphic tori in the Kodaira-Thurston manifold

The Kodaira-Thurston manifold is a quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. We compute the family Gromov-Witten invariants which count pseudoholomorphic tori in the Kodaira-Thurston manifold. For a fixed symplectic form the Gromov-Witten invariant is trivial so we consider the twistor family of left-invariant symplectic forms which are orthogonal for some fixed metric on the Lie algebra. This family defines a loop in the space of symplectic forms. This is the first example of a genus one family Gromov-Witten computation for a non-Kähler manifold.

Floer cohomology of the Chiang Lagrangian

We study holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a Kaehler manifold admitting a Hamiltonian action of a group $K$ which has $L$ as an orbit. We prove various transversality and classification results for such discs which we then apply to the case of a particular Lagrangian in $\mathbf{CP}^3$ first noticed by Chiang. We prove that this Lagrangian has non-vanishing Floer cohomology if and only if the coefficient ring has characteristic 5, in which case it generates the split-closed derived Fukaya category as a triangulated category.

Symplectic mapping class groups of some Stein and rational surfaces

In this paper we compute the homotopy groups of the symplectomorphism groups of the 3-, 4- and 5-point blow-ups of the projective plane (considered as monotone symplectic Del Pezzo surfaces). Along the way, we need to compute the homotopy groups of the compactly supported symplectomorphism groups of the cotangent bundle of $\mathbf{RP}^{2}$ and of $\mathbf{C}^*\times\mathbf{C}$. We also make progress in the case of the $A_n$-Milnor fibres: here we can show that the (compactly supported) Hamiltonian group is contractible and that the symplectic mapping class group embeds in the braid group on $n$-strands.
