Antiflips, mutations, and unbounded symplectic embeddings of rational homology balls

The Milnor fibre of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a Wahl singularity is a rational homology ball $B_{p,q}$. For a canonically polarised surface of general type $X$, it is known that there are bounds on the number $p$ for which $B_{p,q}$ admits a symplectic embedding into $X$. In this paper, we give a recipe to construct unbounded sequences of symplectically embedded $B_{p,q}$ into surfaces of general type equipped with non-canonical symplectic forms. Ultimately, these symplectic embeddings come from Mori's theory of flips, but we give an interpretation in terms of almost toric structures and mutations of polygons. The key point is that a flip of surfaces, as studied by Hacking, Tevelev and Urzúa, can be formulated as a combination of mutations of an almost toric structure and deformation of the symplectic form.

Chilean configuration of conics, lines and points

Using the theory of rational elliptic fibrations, we construct and discuss a one parameter family of configurations of $12$ conics and $9$ points in the projective plane that realizes an abstract configuration $(12_6,9_8)$. This is analogous to the famous Hesse configuration of $12$ lines and $9$ points forming an abstract configuration $(12_3,9_4)$. We also show that any Halphen elliptic fibration of index $2$ with four triangular singular fibers arises from such configuration of conics.

On degenerations of $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces

We compute equations for Coughlan's family of Godeaux surfaces with torsion $\mathbb Z/2$, which we call $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces, and we show that it is (at most) 7 dimensional. We classify non-rational KSBA degenerations $W$ of $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces with one Wahl singularity, showing that $W$ is birational to particular either Enriques surfaces, or $D_{2,n}$ elliptic surfaces, with $n=3,4$ or $6$. We present examples for all possibilities in the first case, and for $n=3,4$ in the second.

Optimal bounds for T-singularities in stable surfaces

We explicitly bound T-singularities on normal projective surfaces $W$ with one singularity, and $K_W$ ample. This bound depends only on $K_W^2$, and it is optimal when $W$ is not rational. We classify and realize surfaces attaining the bound for each Kodaira dimension of the minimal resolution of $W$. This answers effectiveness of bounds (see [Alexeev94], [Alexeev-Mori04], [Lee99]) for those surfaces.

On Z/3-Godeaux surfaces

We prove that Godeaux--Reid surfaces with torsion group Z/3 have topological fundamental group Z/3. For this purpose, we describe degenerations to stable KSBA surfaces with one 1/4(1,1) singularity, whose minimal resolution are elliptic fibrations with two multiplicity 3 fibres and one I_4 singular fibre. We study special such degenerations which have an involution, describing the corresponding Campedelli double plane construction. We also find some stable rational degenerations, some of which have more singularities, and one of which has a single 1/9(1,2) singularity, the minimal possible index for such a surface. Finally, we do the analogous study for the Godeaux surfaces with torsion Z/4.

$\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings of surfaces and degenerations of curves

In this paper we mainly describe $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings of projective surfaces with only Wahl singularities which have birational fibers. For instance, these degenerations appear in normal degenerations of the projective plane, and in boundary divisors of the KSBA compactification of the moduli space of surfaces of general type [KSB88]. We give an explicit description of them as smooth deformations plus 3-fold birational operations, through the flips and divisorial contractions in [HTU13]. We interpret the continuous part (smooth deformations) as degenerations of certain curves in the general fiber. At the end, we work out examples happening in the KSBA boundary for invariants $K^2=1$, $p_g=0$, and $π_1=0$ using plane curves.

Flipping surfaces

We study semistable extremal threefold neighborhoods following earlier work of Mori, Kollár, and Prokhorov. We classify possible flips and extend Mori's algorithm for computing flips of extremal neighborhoods of type k2A to more general neighborhoods of type k1A. In fact we show that they belong to the same deformation family as k2A, and we explicitly construct the universal family of extremal neighborhoods. This construction follows very closely Mori's division algorithm, which we interpret as a sequence of mutations in the cluster algebra of rank 2 with general coefficients. We identify, in the versal deformation space of a cyclic quotient singularity, the locus of deformations such that the total space admits a (terminal) antiflip. We show that these deformations come from at most two irreducible components of the versal deformation space. As an application, we give an algorithm for computing stable one-parameter degenerations of smooth projective surfaces (under some conditions) and describe several components of the Kollár-Shepherd-Barron boundary of the moduli space of smooth canonically polarized surfaces of geometric genus zero.

Chern slopes of simply connected complex surfaces of general type are dense in [2,3]

We prove that for any number $r$ in $[2,3]$, there are spin (resp. non-spin minimal) simply connected complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$. In particular, this shows the existence of simply connected surfaces of general type arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line. In addition, we prove that for any $r \in [1,3]$ and any integer $q\geq 0$, there are minimal complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$, and $π_1(X)$ isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus $q$.

KSBA surfaces with elliptic quotient singularities, $π_1=1$, $p_g=0$, and $K^2=1,2$

Among log canonical surface singularities, the ones which have a rational homology disk smoothing are the cyclic quotient singularities $\frac{1}{n^2}(1,na-1)$ with gcd$(a,n)=1$, and three distinguished elliptic quotient singularities. We show the existence of smoothable KSBA normal surfaces with $π_1=1$, $p_g=0$, and $K^2=1,2$ for each of these three singularities. We also give a list of new (and old) normal surface singularities in smoothable KSBA surfaces for invariants $π_1=1$, $p_g=0$, and $K^2=1,2,3,4$.
