European baskets in discrete-time continuous-binomial market models

We consider a discrete-time incomplete multi-asset market model with continuous price jumps. For a wide class of contingent claims, including European basket call options, we compute the bounds of the interval containing the no-arbitrage prices. We prove that the lower bound coincides, in fact, with Jensen's bound. The upper bound can be computed by restricting to a binomial model for which an explicit expression for the bound is known by an earlier work of the authors. We describe explicitly a maximal hedging strategy which is the best possible in the sense that its value is equal to the upper bound of the price interval of the claim. Our results show that for any $c$ in the interval of the non-arbitrage contingent claim price at time $0$, one can change the boundaries of the price jumps to obtain a model in which $c$ is the upper bound at time $0$ of this interval. The lower bound of this interval remains unaffected.

Uniform boundedness for algebraic groups and Lie groups

Let $G$ be a semisimple linear algebraic group over a field $k$ and let $G^+(k)$ be the subgroup generated by the subgroups $R_u(Q)(k)$, where $Q$ ranges over all the minimal $k$-parabolic subgroups $Q$ of $G$. We prove that if $G^+(k)$ is bounded then it is uniformly bounded. Under extra assumptions we get explicit bounds for $Δ(G^+(k))$: we prove that if $k$ is algebraically closed then $Δ(G^+(k))\leq 4\, {\rm rank}\,G$, and if $G$ is split over $k$ then $Δ(G^+(k))\leq 28\, {\rm rank}\,G$. We deduce some analogous results for real and complex semisimple Lie groups.

Pseudoholomorphic tori in the Kodaira-Thurston manifold

The Kodaira-Thurston manifold is a quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. We compute the family Gromov-Witten invariants which count pseudoholomorphic tori in the Kodaira-Thurston manifold. For a fixed symplectic form the Gromov-Witten invariant is trivial so we consider the twistor family of left-invariant symplectic forms which are orthogonal for some fixed metric on the Lie algebra. This family defines a loop in the space of symplectic forms. This is the first example of a genus one family Gromov-Witten computation for a non-Kähler manifold.

Concordance group and stable commutator length in braid groups

We define a quasihomomorphism from braid groups to the concordance group of knots and examine its properties and consequences of its existence. In particular, we provide a relation between the stable four ball genus in the concordance group and the stable commutator length in braid groups, and produce examples of infinite families of concordance classes of knots with uniformly bounded four ball genus. We also provide applications to the geometry of the infinite braid group. In particular, we show that its commutator subgroup admits a stably unbounded conjugation invariant norm. This answers an open problem posed by Burago, Ivanov and Polterovich.

\int_x^{hx}(g^*α-α)

Let X be a connected topological space admitting a universal cover. Let a be a degree one cohomology class on X. We define and study a two-cocycle on a group acting on X by homeomorphisms preserving the class a. We use this cocycle to investigate group actions on X. For example, we show that if an action preserves a Borel probability measure on X then the cocycle is cohomologically trivial. Under various assumptions on a homeomorphism g, we prove that it is undistorted in Homeo(X,a). In particular, we introduce a local rotation number of a homeomorphism and prove that a homeomorphism with non-constant local rotation number is undistorted.

On distortion in groups of homeomorphisms

Let X be a path-connected topological space admitting a universal cover. Let Homeo(X,a) denote the group of homeomorphisms of X preserving degree one cohomology class a. We investigate the distortion in Homeo(X,a). Let g be an element of Homeo(X,a). We define a Nielsen-type equivalence relation on the space of g-invariant Borel probability measures on X and prove that if a homeomorphism g admits two nonequivalent invariant measures then it is undistorted. We also define a local rotation number of a homeomorphism generalising the notion of the rotation of a homeomorphism of the circle. Then we prove that a homeomorphism is undistorted if its rotation number is nonconstant.
