A double critical mass phenomenon in a no-flux-Dirichlet Keller-Segel system

Derived from a biophysical model for the motion of a crawling cell, the system \[(*)~\begin{cases}u_t=Δu-\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)\\0=Δv-kv+u\end{cases}\] is investigated in a finite domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq2$, with $k\geq0$. While a comprehensive literature is available for cases with $(*)$ describing chemotaxis systems and hence being accompanied by homogeneous Neumann-type boundary conditions, the presently considered modeling context, besides yet requiring the flux $\partial_νu-u\partial_νv$ to vanish on $\partialΩ$, inherently involves homogeneous Dirichlet conditions for the attractant $v$, which in the current setting corresponds to the cell's cytoskeleton being free of pressure at the boundary. This modification in the boundary setting is shown to go along with a substantial change with respect to the potential to support the emergence of singular structures: It is, inter alia, revealed that in contexts of radial solutions in balls there exist two critical mass levels, distinct from each other whenever $k>0$ or $n\geq3$, that separate ranges within which (i) all solutions are global in time and remain bounded, (ii) both global bounded and exploding solutions exist, or (iii) all nontrivial solutions blow up in finite time. While critical mass phenomena distinguishing between regimes of type (i) and (ii) belong to the well-understood characteristics of $(*)$ when posed under classical no-flux boundary conditions in planar domains, the discovery of a distinct secondary critical mass level related to the occurrence of (iii) seems to have no nearby precedent. In the planar case with the domain being a disk, the analytical results are supplemented with some numerical illustrations, and it is discussed how the findings can be interpreted biophysically for the situation of a cell on a flat substrate.

Radial solutions to a chemotaxis-consumption model involving prescribed signal concentrations on the boundary

The chemotaxis system \begin{align*} u_t &= Δu - \nabla \cdot (u\nabla v), \\ v_t &= Δv - uv, \end{align*} is considered under the boundary conditions $\frac{\partial u}{\partialν}- u\frac{\partial v}{\partialν}=0$ and $v=v_\star$ on $\partialΩ$, where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is a ball and $v_\star$ is a given positive constant. In the setting of radially symmetric and suitably regular initial data, a result on global existence of bounded classical solutions is derived in the case $n=2$, while global weak solutions are constructed when $n\in \{3,4,5\}$. This is achieved by analyzing an energy-type inequality reminiscent of global structures previously observed in related homogeneous Neumann problems. Ill-signed boundary integrals newly appearing therein are controlled by means of spatially localized smoothing arguments revealing higher order regularity features outside the spatial origin. Additionally, unique classical solvability in the corresponding stationary problem is asserted, even in nonradial frameworks.

Immediate smoothing and global solutions for initial data in $L^1\times W^{1,2}$ in a Keller-Segel system with logistic terms in 2D

This article deals with the logistic Keller-Segel model \[ \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v) + κu - μu^2, \\ \\ v_t = Δv - v + u \end{cases} \] in bounded two-dimensional domains (with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and for parameters $χ, κ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $μ>0$), and shows that any nonnegative initial data $(u_0,v_0)\in L^1\times W^{1,2}$ lead to global solutions that are smooth in $\barΩ\times(0,\infty)$.

Global classical small-data solutions for a three-dimensional chemotaxis Navier-Stokes system involving matrix-valued sensitivities

The coupled chemotaxis fluid system \begin{equation} \left\{ \begin{array}{llc} n_t=Δn-\nabla\cdot(n S(x,n,c)\cdot\nabla c)-u\cdot\nabla n, &(x,t)\in Ω\times (0,T), \displaystyle c_t=Δc-nc-u\cdot\nabla c, &(x,t)\inΩ\times (0,T), \displaystyle u_t=Δu-(u\cdot\nabla )u+\nabla P+n\nablaΦ,\quad \nabla\cdot u=0, &(x,t)\inΩ\times (0,T), \displaystyle \nabla c\cdotν=(\nabla n-nS(x,n,c)\cdot\nabla c)\cdotν=0, \;\; u=0,&(x,t)\in \partialΩ\times (0,T), n(x,0)=n_{0}(x),\quad c(x,0)=c_{0}(x),\quad u(x,0)=u_0(x) & x\inΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $S\in (C^2(\barΩ\times [0,\infty)^2))^{N\times N}$, is considered in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\in\{2,3\}$, with smooth boundary. We show that it has global classical solutions if the initial data satisfy certain smallness conditions and give decay properties of these solutions.

Global existence, boundedness and stabilization in a high-dimensional chemotaxis system with consumption

This paper deals with the homogeneous Neumann boundary-value problem for the chemotaxis-consumption system \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{array}{llc} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot (u\nabla v)+κu-μu^2,\\ v_t=Δv-uv, \end{array} \end{eqnarray*} in $N$-dimensional bounded smooth domains for suitably regular positive initial data. We shall establish the existence of a global bounded classical solution for suitably large $μ$ and prove that for any $μ>0$ there exists a weak solution. Moreover, in the case of $κ>0$ convergence to the constant equilibrium $(\fracκμ,0)$ is shown.

How far does small chemotactic interaction perturb the Fisher-KPP dynamics?

This paper deals with nonnegative solutions of the Neumann initial-boundary value problem for the fully parabolic chemotaxis-growth system $ (u_{\varepsilon})_t$ $=Δu_{\varepsilon} - \varepsilon \nabla \cdot ( u_\varepsilon \nabla v_\varepsilon) + μu_\varepsilon(1 - u_\varepsilon)$, $ (v_{\varepsilon})_t=Δv_\varepsilon -v_\varepsilon+u_\varepsilon,$ with positive small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ in a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 1$) with smooth boundary. The solutions converge to the solution $u$ to the Fisher-KPP equation as $\varepsilon\to 0$. It is shown that for all $μ>0$ and any suitably regular nonnegative initial data $(u_{init},v_{init})$ there are some constants $\varepsilon_0>0$ and $C>0$ such that \[ \sup_{t>0}\|u_\varepsilon(\cdot,t)-u(\cdot,t)\|_{L^\infty(Ω)} \leq C\varepsilon \quad for\ all\ \varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_0). \]

Locally bounded global solutions to a chemotaxis consumption model with singular sensitivity and nonlinear diffusion

We show the existence of locally bounded global solutions to the chemotaxis system \[ u_t = \nabla\cdot(D(u)\nabla u) - \nabla\cdot(\frac{u}{v} \nabla v) \] \[ v_t = Δv - uv \] with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and suitably regular positive initial data in smooth bounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq2$, for $D(u)\geq δu^{m-1}$ with some $δ>0$, provided that $m>1+\frac N4$.

Long-term behaviour in a chemotaxis-fluid system with logistic source

We consider the coupled chemotaxis Navier-Stokes model with logistic source terms \[ n_t + u\cdot \nabla n = Δn - χ\nabla \cdot (n \nabla c) + κn - μn^2\] \[ c_t + u\cdot \nabla c = Δc - nc\] \[ u_t + (u\cdot \nabla)u = Δu +\nabla P + n\nabla Φ+ f, \quad\qquad \nabla \cdot u=0 \] in a bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for $n$ and $c$ and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for $u$ and with given functions $f\in L^\infty(Ω\times(0,\infty))$ satisfying certain decay conditions and $Φ\in C^{1+β}(\barΩ)$ for some $β\in(0,1)$. We construct weak solutions and prove that after some waiting time they become smooth and finally converge to the semi-trivial steady state $(\fracκμ,0,0)$. On the weakly competitive case in a two-species chemotaxis model

In this article we investigate a parabolic-parabolic-elliptic two-species chemotaxis system with weak competition and show global asymptotic stability of the coexistence steady state under a smallness condition on the chemotactic strengths, which seems more natural than the condition previously known. For the proof we rely on the method of eventual comparison, which thereby is shown to be a useful tool even in the presence of chemotactic terms.

A new approach toward boundedness in a two-dimensional parabolic chemotaxis system with singular sensitivity

We consider the parabolic chemotaxis model \[ u_t=Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(\frac uv \nabla v), \qquad\qquad v_t=Δv - v + u\] in a smooth, bounded, convex two-dimensional domain and show global existence and boundedness of solutions for $χ\in(0,χ_0)$ for some $χ_0>1$, thereby proving that the value $χ=1$ is not critical in this regard. Our main tool is consideration of the energy functional \[ \mathcal{F}_{a,b}(u,v)=\int_Ωu\ln u - a \int_Ωu\ln v + b \int_Ω|\nabla \sqrt{v}|^2 \] for $a>0$, $b\geq 0$, where using nonzero values of $b$ appears to be new in this context.

Boundedness in a chemotaxis-haptotaxis model with nonlinear diffusion

This article deals with an initial-boundary value problem for the coupled chemotaxis-haptotaxis system with nonlinear diffusion \begin{align*} u_t=&\nabla\cdot(D(u)\nabla u)-χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)-ξ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla w)+μu(1-u-w),\\ v_t=&Δv-v+u,\\ w_t=&-vw\end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n=2, 3, 4$, where $χ, ξ$ and $μ$ are given nonnegative parameters. The diffusivity $D(u)$ is assumed to satisfy $D(u)\geqδu^{m-1}$ for all $u>0$ with some $δ>0$. It is proved that for sufficiently regular initial data global bounded solutions exist whenever $m>2-\frac{2}{n}$. For the case of non-degenerate diffusion (i.e. $D(0)>0$) the solutions are classical; for the case of possibly degenerate diffusion ($D(0)\geq 0$), the existence of bounded weak solutions is shown.

Equilibration of unit mass solutions to a degenerate parabolic equation with a nonlocal gradient nonlinearity

We prove convergence of positive solutions to \[ u_t = uΔu + u\int_Ω |\nabla u|^2, \qquad u\rvert_{\partialΩ} =0, \qquad u(\cdot,0)=u_0 \] in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 1$, with smooth boundary in the case of $\int_Ωu_0=1$ and identify the $W_0^{1,2}(Ω)$-limit of $u(t)$ as $t\to \infty$ as the solution of the corresponding stationary problem. This behaviour is different from the cases of $\int_Ωu_0<1$ and $\int_Ωu_0>1$ which are known to result in convergence to zero or blow-up in finite time, respectively. The proof is based on a monotonicity property of $\int_Ω |\nabla u|^2$ along trajectories and the analysis of an associated constrained minimization problem. Integrability conditions between the first and second Cosserat deformation tensor in geometrically nonlinear micropolar models and existence of minimizers

In this note we extend integrability conditions for the symmetric stretch tensor $U$ in the polar decomposition of the deformation gradient $\nablaφ=F=R\,U$ to the non-symmetric case. In doing so we recover integrability conditions for the first Cosserat deformation tensor. Let $F=\bar R\,\bar U$ with $\bar R:Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3\longrightarrow\mathrm{SO}(3)$ and $\bar U:Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3\longrightarrow \mathrm{GL}(3)$. Then $\mathfrak{K}:={\bar R}^T\mathrm{Grad}\,{\bar R}=\mathrm{Anti}\Big( \frac{1}{\mathrm{det} \bar U}\Big[\bar U(\mathrm{Curl} \bar U)^T-\frac{1}{2} \mathrm{tr}(\bar U(\mathrm{Curl} \bar U)^T) 1\!\!1 \Big]\bar U\Big),$ giving a connection between the first Cosserat deformation tensor $\bar U$ and the second Cosserat tensor ${\mathfrak{K}}$. (Here, Anti denotes an isomorphism between $\mathbb{R}^{3\times 3}$ and $\mathfrak{So}(3):=\{\,\mathfrak{A}\in\mathbb{R}^{3\times 3\times 3}\,|\,\mathfrak{A}.u\in\mathfrak{so}(3)\;\forall u\in \mathbb{R}^3\}$.) The formula shows that it is not possible to prescribe $\bar U$ and $\mathfrak{K}$ independent from each other. We also propose a new energy formulation of geometrically nonlinear Cosserat models which completely separate the effects of nonsymmetric straining and curvature. For very weak constitutive assumptions (no direct boundary condition on rotations, zero Cosserat couple modulus, quadratic curvature energy) we show existence of minimizers in Sobolev-spaces.

On a degenerate non-local parabolic problem describing infinite dimensional replicator dynamics

We establish the existence of locally positive weak solutions to the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for \[ u_t = u Δu + u \int_Ω|\nabla u|^2 \] in bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and prove that solutions converge to $0$ if the initial mass is small, whereas they undergo blow-up in finite time if the initial mass is large. We show that in this case the blow-up set coincides with $\overlineΩ$, i.e. the finite-time blow-up is global. Chemotaxis can prevent thresholds on population density

We define and (for $q>n$) prove uniqueness and an extensibility property of $W^{1,q}$-solutions to $u_t =-\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)+κu-μu^2$ $ 0 =Δv-v+u$ $\partial_νv|_{\partialΩ} = \partial_νu|_{\partialΩ}=0,$ $ u(0,\cdot)=u_0 $ in balls in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which we then use to obtain a criterion guaranteeing some kind of structure formation in a corresponding chemotaxis system - thereby extending recent results of Winkler to the higher dimensional (radially symmetric) case. Eventual smoothness and asymptotics in a three-dimensional chemotaxis system with logistic source

We prove existence of global weak solutions to the chemotaxis system $ u_t=Δu - \nabla\cdot (u\nabla v) +κu -μu^2 $ $ v_t=Δv-v+u $ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded convex domain $Ω\subset R^n$, for arbitrarily small values of $μ>0$. Additionally, we show that in the three-dimensional setting, after some time, these solutions become classical solutions, provided that $κ$ is not too large. In this case, we also consider their large-time behaviour: We prove decay if $κ\leq 0$ and the existence of an absorbing set if $κ>0$ is sufficiently small. The exponentiated Hencky-logarithmic strain energy. Part I: Constitutive issues and rank-one convexity

We investigate a family of isotropic volumetric-isochoric decoupled strain energies $$ F\mapsto W_{_{\rm eH}}(F):=\widehat{W}_{_{\rm eH}}(U):=\left\{\begin{array}{lll} \fracμ{k}\,e^{k\,\|{\rm dev}_n\log {U}\|^2}+\fracκ{2\, {\widehat{k}}}\,e^{\widehat{k}\,[{ \rm tr}(\log U)]^2}&\text{if}& { \rm det} F>0,\\ +\infty &\text{if} &{ \rm det} F\leq 0, \end{array}\right.\quad $$ based on the Hencky-logarithmic (true, natural) strain tensor $\log U$, where $μ>0$ is the infinitesimal shear modulus, $κ=\frac{2μ+3λ}{3}>0$ is the infinitesimal bulk modulus with $λ$ the first Lamé constant, $k,\widehat{k}$ are dimensionless parameters, $F=\nabla φ$ is the gradient of deformation, $U=\sqrt{F^T F}$ is the right stretch tensor and ${\rm dev}_n\log {U} =\log {U}-\frac{1}{n} {\rm tr}(\log {U})\cdot 1\!\!1$ is the deviatoric part of the strain tensor $\log U$. For small elastic strains, $W_{_{\rm eH}}$ approximates the classical quadratic Hencky strain energy $$ F\mapsto W_{_{\rm H}}(F):=\widehat{W}_{_{\rm H}}(U):=μ\,\|{\rm dev}_n\log U\|^2+\fracκ{2}\,[{\rm tr}(\log U)]^2, $$ which is not everywhere rank-one convex. In plane elastostatics, i.e. $n=2$, we prove the everywhere rank-one convexity of the proposed family $W_{_{\rm eH}}$, for $k\geq \frac{1}{4}$ and $\widehat{k}\geq \frac{1}{8}$. Moreover, we show that the corresponding Cauchy (true)-stress-true-strain relation is invertible for $n=2,3$ and we show the monotonicity of the Cauchy (true) stress tensor as a function of the true strain tensor in a domain of bounded distortions. We also prove that the rank-one convexity of the energies belonging to the family $W_{_{\rm eH}}$ is not preserved in dimension $n=3$.

The exponentiated Hencky-logarithmic strain energy. Part II: Coercivity, planar polyconvexity and existence of minimizers

We consider a family of isotropic volumetric-isochoric decoupled strain energies $$ F\mapsto W_{\rm eH}(F):=\widehat{W}_{\rm eH}(U):=\left\{\begin{array}{lll} \fracμ{k}\,e^{k\,\|{\rm dev}_n\log {U}\|^2}+\fracκ{2\hat{k}}\,e^{\hat{k}\,[{\rm tr}(\log U)]^2}&\text{if}& {\rm det}\, F>0,\\ +\infty &\text{if} &{\rm det} F\leq 0, \end{array}\right.\quad $$ based on the Hencky-logarithmic (true, natural) strain tensor $\log U$, where $μ>0$ is the infinitesimal shear modulus, $κ=\frac{2μ+3λ}{3}>0$ is the infinitesimal bulk modulus with $λ$ the first Lamé constant, $k,\hat{k}$ are dimensionless parameters, $F=\nabla φ$ is the gradient of deformation, $U=\sqrt{F^T F}$ is the right stretch tensor and ${\rm dev}_n\log {U} =\log {U}-\frac{1}{n} {\rm tr}(\log {U})\cdot 1\!\!1$ is the deviatoric part (the projection onto the traceless tensors) of the strain tensor $\log U$. For small elastic strains the energies reduce to first order to the classical quadratic Hencky energy $$ F\mapsto W{_{\rm H}}(F):=\widehat{W}_{_{\rm H}}(U):=μ\,\|{\rm dev}_n\log U\|^2+\fracκ{2}\,[{\rm tr}(\log U)]^2, $$ which is known to be not rank-one convex. The main result in this paper is that in plane elastostatics the energies of the family $W_{_{\rm eH}}$ are polyconvex for $k\geq \frac{1}{3}$, $\widehat{k}\geq \frac{1}{8}$, extending a previous finding on its rank-one convexity. Our method uses a judicious application of Steigmann's polyconvexity criteria based on the representation of the energy in terms of the principal invariants of the stretch tensor $U$. These energies also satisfy suitable growth and coercivity conditions. We formulate the equilibrium equations and we prove the existence of minimizers by the direct methods of the calculus of variations.

On Grioli's minimum property and its relation to Cauchy's polar decomposition

The unitary polar factor of a matrix F is the unitary matrix Q realizing the minimum of the norm of F-Q over all unitary matrices Q. Tracing back the development on the optimality of the polar factor to its presumable roots, in this paper we present a commented translation of a note by G. Grioli from 1940 (Boll.Un.Math.Ital.2,452-455(1940)) showing the minimization property for the Frobenius norm in dimension 3; in his words: "We show that for the homogeneous displacement, tangent to any finite displacement, there exists a minimum property completely analogous to a well known property valid for infinitesimal displacements." Sum of squared logarithms - An inequality relating positive definite matrices and their matrix logarithm

Let y1, y2, y3, a1, a2, a3 > 0 be such that y1 y2 y3 = a1 a2 a3 and y1 + y2 + y3 >= a1 + a2 + a3, y1 y2 + y2 y3 + y1 y3 >= a1 a2 + a2 a3 + a1 a3. Then the following inequality holds (log y1)^2 + (log y2)^2 + (log y3)^2 >= (log a1)^2 + (log a2)^2 + (log a3)^2. This can also be stated in terms of real positive definite 3x3-matrices P1, P2: If their determinants are equal det P1 = det P2, then tr P1 >= tr P2 and tr Cof P1 >= tr Cof P2 implies norm(log P1) >= norm(log P2), where log is the principal matrix logarithm and norm(P) denotes the Frobenius matrix norm. Applications in matrix analysis and nonlinear elasticity are indicated.

The minimization of matrix logarithms - on a fundamental property of the unitary polar factor

We show that the unitary factor U in the polar decomposition of a nonsingular matrix Z = U H is the minimizer for both ||Log(Q^* Z)|| and ||sym (Log(Q^*Z))|| over unitary Q, for any given invertible complex n-times-n matrix Z, for any unitarily invariant norm and any n. We prove that U is the unique matrix with this property. As important tools we use a generalized Bernstein trace inequality and the theory of majorization.
