A monotone convergence theorem for strong Feller semigroups

For an increasing sequence $(T_n)$ of one-parameter semigroups of sub Markovian kernel operators over a Polish space, we study the limit semigroup and prove sufficient conditions for it to be strongly Feller. In particular, we show that the strong Feller property carries over from the approximating semigroups to the limit semigroup if the resolvent of the latter maps the constant 1 function to a continuous function. This is instrumental in the study of elliptic operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded coefficients: our abstract result enables us to assign a semigroup to such an operator and to show that the semigroup is strongly Feller under very mild regularity assumptions on the coefficients. We also provide counterexamples to demonstrate that the assumptions in our main result are close to optimal.

Aperiodicity of positive operators that increase the support of functions

Consider a positive operator $T$ on an $L^p$-space (or, more generally, a Banach lattice) which increases the support of functions in the sense that $supp(Tf) \supseteq supp{f}$ for every function $f \ge 0$. We show that this implies, under mild assumptions, that $T$ has no unimodular eigenvalues except for possibly the number $1$. This rules out periodic behaviour of any orbits of the powers of $T$, and thus enables us to prove convergence of those powers in many situations. For the proof we first perform a careful analysis of the action of lattice homomorphisms on the support of functions; then we split $T$ into an invertible and a weakly stable part, and apply the aforementioned analysis to the invertible part. An appropriate adaptation of this argument allows us to prove another version of our main result which is useful for the study of so-called irreducible operators.

Stability of (eventually) positive semigroups on spaces of continuous functions

We present a new and very short proof of the fact that, for positive $C_0$-semigroups on spaces of continuous functions, the spectral and the growth bound coincide. Our argument, inspired by an idea of Vogt, makes the role of the underlying space completely transparent and also works if the space does not contain the constant functions - a situation in which all earlier proofs become technically quite involved. We also show how the argument can be adapted to yield the same result for semigroups that are only eventually positive rather than positive.

A note on the spectrum of irreducible operators and semigroups

Let $T$ denote a positive operator with spectral radius $1$ on, say, an $L^p$-space. A classical result in infinite dimensional Perron--Frobenius theory says that, if $T$ is irreducible and power bounded, then its peripheral point spectrum is either empty or a subgroup of the unit circle. In this note we show that the analogous assertion for the entire peripheral spectrum fails. More precisely, for every finite union $U$ of finite subgroups of the unit circle we construct an irreducible stochastic operator on $\ell^1$ whose peripheral spectrum equals $U$. We also give a similar construction for the $C_0$-semigroup case.

Eventual Domination for Linear Evolution Equations

We consider two $C_0$-semigroups on function spaces or, more generally, Banach lattices and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the orbits of the first semigroup to dominate the orbits of the second semigroup for large times. As an important special case we consider an $L^2$-space and self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ which generate $C_0$-semigroups; in this situation we give criteria for the existence of a time $t_1 \ge 0$ such that $e^{tB} \ge e^{tA}$ for all subsequent times $t\ge t_1$. As a consequence of our abstract theory, we obtain many surprising insights into the behaviour of various second and fourth order differential operators.

A note on lattice ordered $C^*$-algebras and Perron--Frobenius theory

A classical result of Sherman says that if the space of self-adjoint elements in a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a lattice with respect to its canonical order, then $\mathcal{A}$ is commutative. We give a new proof of this theorem which shows that it is intrinsically connected with the spectral theory of positive operator semigroups. Our methods also show that some important Perron--Frobenius like spectral results fail to hold in any non-commutative $C^*$-algebra.

A solution to a linear integral equation with an application to statistics of infinitely divisible moving averages

For a stationary moving average random field, a non-parametric low frequency estimator of the Lévy density of its infinitely divisible independently scattered integrator measure is given. The plug-in estimate is based on the solution $w$ of the linear integral equation $v(x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} g(s) w(h(s)x)ds$, where $g,h:\mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ are given measurable functions and $v$ is a (weighted) $L^2$-function on $\mathbb{R}$. We investigate conditions for the existence and uniqueness of this solution and give $L^2$-error bounds for the resulting estimates. An application to pure jump moving averages and a simulation study round off the paper.

Almost Interior Points in Ordered Banach Spaces and the Long--Term Behaviour of Strongly Positive Operator Semigroups

The first part of this article is a brief survey of the properties of so-called almost interior points in ordered Banach spaces. Those vectors can be seen as a generalization of ``functions which are strictly positive almost everywhere'' on $L^p$-spaces and of ``quasi-interior points'' in Banach lattices. In the second part we study the long--term behaviour of strongly positive operator semigroups on ordered Banach spaces; these are semigroups which, in a sense, map every non-zero positive vector to an almost interior point. Using the Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg decomposition together with the theory presented in the first part of the paper we deduce sufficiency criteria for such semigroups to converge (strongly or in operator norm) as time tends to infinity. This generalises known results for semigroups on Banach lattices as well as on normally ordered Banach spaces with unit.

Strict positivity for the principal eigenfunction of elliptic operators with various boundary conditions

We consider elliptic operators with measurable coefficients and Robin boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and show that the first eigenfunction $v$ satisfies $v(x) \ge δ> 0$ for all $x \in \overlineΩ$, even if the boundary $\partial Ω$ is only Lipschitz continuous. Under such weak regularity assumptions the Hopf-Ole\uınik boundary lemma is not available; instead we use a new approach based on an abstract positivity improving condition for semigroups that map $L_p(Ω)$ into $C(\overlineΩ)$. The same tool also yields corresponding results for Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Finally, we show that our results can be used to derive strong minimum and maximum principles for parabolic and elliptic equations.

Uniform convergence of stochastic semigroups

For stochastic $C_0$-semigroups on $L^1$-spaces there is wealth of results that show strong convergence to an equilibrium as $t \to \infty$, given that the semigroup contains a partial integral operator. This has plenty of applications to transport equations and in mathematical biology. However, up to now partial integral operators do not play a prominent role in theorems which yield uniform convergence of the semigroup rather than only strong convergence. In this article we prove that, for irreducible stochastic semigroups, uniform convergence to an equilibrium is actually equivalent to being partially integral and uniformly mean ergodic. In addition to this Tauberian theorem, we also show that our semigroup is uniformly convergent if and only if it is partially integral and the dual semigroup satisfies a certain irreducibility condition. Our proof is based on a uniform version of a lower bound theorem of Lasota and Yorke, which we combine with various techniques from Banach lattice theory.

Growth rates and the peripheral spectrum of positive operators

Let $T$ be a positive operator on a complex Banach lattice. It is a long open problem whether the peripheral spectrum $σ_{\operatorname{per}}(T)$ of $T$ is always cyclic. We consider several growth conditions on $T$, involving its eigenvectors or its resolvent, and show that these conditions provide new sufficient criteria for the cyclicity of the peripheral spectrum of $T$. Moreover we give an alternative proof of the recent result that every (WS)-bounded positive operator has cyclic peripheral spectrum. We also consider irreducible operators $T$. If such an operator is Abel bounded, then it is known that every peripheral eigenvalue of $T$ is algebraically simple. We show that the same is true if $T$ only fulfils the weaker condition of being (WS)-bounded.

Lower Bounds and the Asymptotic Behaviour of Positive Operator Semigroups

If $(T_t)$ is a semigroup of Markov operators on an $L^1$-space that admits a non-trivial lower bound, then a well-known theorem of Lasota and Yorke asserts that the semigroup is strongly convergent as $t \to \infty$. In this article we generalise and improve this result in several respects. First, we give a new and very simple proof for the fact that the same conclusion also holds if the semigroup is merely assumed to be bounded instead of Markov. As a main result we then prove a version of this theorem for semigroups which only admit certain individual lower bounds. Moreover, we generalise a theorem of Ding on semigroups of Frobenius-Perron operators. We also demonstrate how our results can be adapted to the setting of general Banach lattices and we give some counterexamples to show optimality of our results. Our methods combine some rather concrete estimates and approximation arguments with abstract functional analytical tools. One of these tools is a theorem which relates the convergence of a time-continuous operator semigroup to the convergence of embedded discrete semigroups.

Spectral and Asymptotic Properties of Contractive Semigroups on Non-Hilbert Spaces

We analyse $C_0$-semigroups of contractive operators on real-valued $L^p$-spaces for $p \not= 2$ and on other classes of non-Hilbert spaces. We show that, under some regularity assumptions on the semigroup, the geometry of the unit ball of those spaces forces the semigroup's generator to have only trivial (point) spectrum on the imaginary axis. This has interesting consequences for the asymptotic behaviour as $t \to \infty$. For example, we can show that a contractive and eventually norm continuous $C_0$-semigroup on a real-valued $L^p$-space automatically converges strongly if $p \not\in \{1,2,\infty\}$.

Towards a Perron--Frobenius Theory for Eventually Positive Operators

This article is a contribution to the spectral theory of so-called eventually positive operators, i.e.\ operators $T$ which may not be positive but whose powers $T^n$ become positive for large enough $n$. While the spectral theory of such operators is well understood in finite dimensions, the infinite dimensional case has received much less attention in the literature. We show that several sensible notions of "eventual positivity" can be defined in the infinite dimensional setting, and in contrast to the finite dimensional case those notions do not in general coincide. We then prove a variety of typical Perron--Frobenius type results: we show that the spectral radius of an eventually positive operator is contained in the spectrum; we give sufficient conditions for the spectral radius to be an eigenvalue admitting a positive eigenvector; and we show that the peripheral spectrum of an eventually positive operator is a cyclic set under quite general assumptions. All our results are formulated for operators on Banach lattices, and many of them do not impose any compactness assumptions on the operator.

Eventually Positive Semigroups of Linear Operators

We develop a systematic theory of eventually positive semigroups of linear operators mainly on spaces of continuous functions. By eventually positive we mean that for every positive initial condition the solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem is positive for large enough time. Characterisations of such semigroups are given by means of resolvent properties of the generator and Perron--Frobenius type spectral conditions. We apply these characterisations to prove eventual positivity of several examples of semigroups including some generated by fourth order elliptic operators and a delay differential equation. We also consider eventually positive semigroups on arbitrary Banach lattices and establish several results for their spectral bound which were previously only known for positive semigroups.

On the Peripheral Spectrum of Positive Operators

This paper contributes to the analysis of the peripheral (point) spectrum of positive linear operators on Banach lattices. We show that, under appropriate growth and regularity conditions, the peripheral point spectrum of a positive operator is cyclic and that the corresponding eigenspaces fulfil a certain dimension estimate. A couple of examples demonstrates that some of our theorems are optimal. Our results on the peripheral point spectrum are then used to prove a sufficient condition for the peripheral spectrum of a positive operator to be cyclic; this generalizes theorems of Lotz and Scheffold.

On Weak Decay Rates and Uniform Stability of Bounded Linear Operators

We consider a bounded linear operator $T$ on a complex Banach space $X$ and show that its spectral radius $r(T)$ satisfies $r(T) < 1$ if all sequences $(< x',T^nx>)_{n \in \mathbb{N}_0}$ ($x \in X$, $x' \in X'$) are, up to a certain rearrangement, contained in a principal ideal of the space $c_0$ of sequences which converge to $0$. From this result we obtain generalizations of theorems of G. Weiss and J. van Neerven. We also prove a related result on $C_0$-semigroups.
