Eventually Positive Semigroups of Linear Operators

We develop a systematic theory of eventually positive semigroups of linear operators mainly on spaces of continuous functions. By eventually positive we mean that for every positive initial condition the solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem is positive for large enough time. Characterisations of such semigroups are given by means of resolvent properties of the generator and Perron--Frobenius type spectral conditions. We apply these characterisations to prove eventual positivity of several examples of semigroups including some generated by fourth order elliptic operators and a delay differential equation. We also consider eventually positive semigroups on arbitrary Banach lattices and establish several results for their spectral bound which were previously only known for positive semigroups.

Periodic-parabolic eigenvalue problems with a large parameter and degeneration

We consider a periodic-parabolic eigenvalue problem with a non-negative potential λmλm vanishing on a non-cylindrical domain DmD_m satisfying conditions similar to those for the parabolic maximum principle. We show that the limit as λ→∞λ\to\infty leads a periodic-parabolic problem on DmD_m having a unique periodic-parabolic principal eigenvalue and eigenfunction. We substantially improve a result from [Du & Peng, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364 (2012), p. 6039-6070]. At the same time we offer a different approach based on a periodic-parabolic initial boundary value problem. The results are motivated by an analysis of the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to semi-linear logistic periodic-parabolic problems with temporal and spacial degeneracies.

A Liouville theorem for pp-harmonic functions on exterior domains

We prove Liouville type theorems for pp-harmonic functions on exterior domains of the dd-dimensional Euclidean space, where 1<p<∞1<p<\infty and d≥2d\geq 2. We show that every positive pp-harmonic function satisfying zero Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary conditions and having zero limit as ∣x∣|x| tends to infinity is identically zero. In the case of zero Neumann boundary conditions, we establish that any semi-bounded pp-harmonic function is constant if 1<p<d1<p<d. If p≥dp\ge d, then it is either constant or it behaves asymptotically like the fundamental solution of the homogeneous pp-Laplace equation.
