Strict positivity for the principal eigenfunction of elliptic operators with various boundary conditions

We consider elliptic operators with measurable coefficients and Robin boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and show that the first eigenfunction $v$ satisfies $v(x) \ge δ> 0$ for all $x \in \overlineΩ$, even if the boundary $\partial Ω$ is only Lipschitz continuous. Under such weak regularity assumptions the Hopf-Ole\uınik boundary lemma is not available; instead we use a new approach based on an abstract positivity improving condition for semigroups that map $L_p(Ω)$ into $C(\overlineΩ)$. The same tool also yields corresponding results for Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Finally, we show that our results can be used to derive strong minimum and maximum principles for parabolic and elliptic equations.

The Generalized Birman-Schwinger Principle

We prove a generalized Birman-Schwinger principle in the non-self-adjoint context. In particular, we provide a detailed discussion of geometric and algebraic multiplicities of eigenvalues of the basic operator of interest (e.g., a Schrödinger operator) and the associated Birman-Schwinger operator, and additionally offer a careful study of the associated Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors of both operators. In the course of our analysis we also study algebraic and geometric multiplicities of zeros of strongly analytic operator-valued functions and the associated Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors. We also relate algebraic multiplicities to the notion of the index of analytic operator-valued functions and derive a general Weinstein-Aronszajn formula for a pair of non-self-adjoint operators.

Fractional powers of sectorial operators via the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator

In the very influential paper \cite{CS07} Caffarelli and Silvestre studied regularity of $(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$, by identifying fractional powers with a certain Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. Stinga and Torrea \cite{ST10} and Galé, Miana and Stinga \cite{GMS13} gave several more abstract versions of this extension procedure. The purpose of this paper is to study precise regularity properties of the Dirichlet and the Neumann problem in Hilbert spaces. Then the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator becomes an isomorphism between interpolation spaces and its part in the underlying Hilbert space is exactly the fractional power.

On maximal parabolic regularity for non-autonomous parabolic operators

We consider linear inhomogeneous non-autonomous parabolic problems associated to sesquilinear forms, with discontinuous dependence of time. We show that for these problems, the property of maximal parabolic regularity can be extrapolated to time integrability exponents $r\neq 2$. This allows us to prove maximal parabolic $L^r$-regularity for discontinuous non-autonomous second-order divergence form operators in very general geometric settings and to prove existence results for related quasilinear equations.

Weak and strong approximation of semigroups on Hilbert spaces

For a sequence of uniformly bounded, degenerate semigroups on a Hilbert space, we compare various types of convergences to a limit semigroup. Among others, we show that convergence of the semigroups, or of the resolvents of the generators, in the weak operator topology, in the strong operator topology or in certain integral norms are equivalent under certain natural assumptions which are frequently met in applications.

Hölder estimates for parabolic operators on domains with rough boundary

We investigate linear parabolic, second-order boundary value problems with mixed boundary conditions on rough domains. Assuming only boundedness and ellipticity on the coefficient function and very mild conditions on the geometry of the domain, including a very weak compatibility condition between the Dirichlet boundary part and its complement, we prove Hölder continuity of the solution in space and time.

Nonseparability and von Neumann's theorem for domains of unbounded operators

A classical theorem of von Neumann asserts that every unbounded self-adjoint operator $A$ in a separable Hilbert space $H$ is unitarily equivalent to an operator $B$ in $H$ such that $D(A)\cap D(B)=\{0\}$. Equivalently this can be formulated as a property for nonclosed operator ranges. We will show that von Neumann's theorem does not directly extend to the nonseparable case. In this paper we prove a characterisation of the property that an operator range $\mathcal{R}$ in a general Hilbert space $H$ admits a unitary operator $U$ such that $U\mathcal{R}\cap\mathcal{R}=\{0\}$. This allows us to study stability properties of operator ranges with the aforementioned property.

A generalisation of the form method for accretive forms and operators

The form method as popularised by Lions and Kato is a successful device to associate m-sectorial operators with suitable elliptic or sectorial forms. McIntosh generalised the form method to an accretive setting, thereby allowing to associate m-accretive operators with suitable accretive forms. Classically, the form domain is required to be densely embedded into the Hilbert space. Recently, this requirement was relaxed by Arendt and ter Elst in the setting of elliptic and sectorial forms. Here we study the prospects of a generalised form method for accretive forms to generate accretive operators. In particular, we work with the same relaxed condition on the form domain as used by Arendt and ter Elst. We give a multitude of examples for many degenerate phenomena that can occur in the most general setting. We characterise when the associated operator is m-accretive and investigate the class of operators that can be generated. For the case that the associated operator is m-accretive, we study form approximation and Ouhabaz type invariance criteria.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps on bounded Lipschitz domains

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to an elliptic partial differential equation becomes multivalued when the underlying Dirichlet problem is not uniquely solvable. The main objective of this paper is to present a systematic study of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and its inverse, the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map, in the framework of linear relations in Hilbert spaces. Our treatment is inspired by abstract methods from extension theory of symmetric operators, utilizes the general theory of linear relations and makes use of some deep results on the regularity of the solutions of boundary value problems on bounded Lipschitz domains.

Analytical aspects of isospectral drums

We reexamine the proofs of isospectrality of the counterexample domains to Kac' question `Can one hear the shape of a drum?' from an analytical viewpoint. We reformulate isospectrality in a more abstract setting as the existence of a similarity transform intertwining two operators associated with elliptic forms, and give several equivalent characterizations of this property as intertwining the forms and form domains, the associated operators and operator domains, and the semigroups they generate. On a representative pair of counterexample domains, we use these criteria to show that the similarity transform intertwines not only the Laplacians with Neumann (or Dirichlet) boundary conditions but also any two appropriately defined elliptic operators on these domains, even if they are not self-adjoint. However, no such transform can intertwine these operators if Robin boundary conditions are imposed instead of Neumann or Dirichlet. We also remark on various operator-theoretic properties of such intertwining similarity transforms.

Parabolic equations with dynamical boundary conditions and source terms on interfaces

We consider parabolic equations with mixed boundary conditions and domain inhomogeneities supported on a lower dimensional hypersurface, enforcing a jump in the conormal derivative. Only minimal regularity assumptions on the domain and the coefficients are imposed. It is shown that the corresponding linear operator enjoys maximal parabolic regularity in a suitable $L^p$-setting. The linear results suffice to treat also the corresponding nondegenerate quasilinear problems.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator via hidden compactness

We show that to each symmetric elliptic operator of the form \[ \mathcal{A} = - \sum \partial_k \, a_{kl} \, \partial_l + c \] on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ one can associate a self-adjoint Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on $L_2(\partial Ω)$, which may be multi-valued if 0 is in the Dirichlet spectrum of $\mathcal{A}$. To overcome the lack of coerciveness in this case, we employ a new version of the Lax--Milgram lemma based on an indirect ellipticity property that we call hidden compactness. We then establish uniform resolvent convergence of a sequence of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators whenever their coefficients converge uniformly and the second-order limit operator in $L_2(Ω)$ has the unique continuation property. We also consider semigroup convergence.

The regular part of second-order differential sectorial forms with lower-order terms

We present a formula for the regular part of a sectorial form that represents a general linear second-order differential expression that may include lower-order terms. The formula is given in terms of the original coefficients. It shows that the regular part is again a differential sectorial form and allows to characterise when also the singular part is sectorial. While this generalises earlier results on pure second-order differential expressions, it also shows that lower-order terms truly introduce new behaviour.

Partial Gaussian bounds for degenerate differential operators II

Let $A = - \sum \partial_k \, c_{kl} \, \partial_l$ be a degenerate sectorial differential operator with complex bounded mesaurable coefficients. Let $Ω\subset \mathds{R}^d$ be open and suppose that $A$ is strongly elliptic on $Ω$. Further, let $χ\in C_{\rm b}^\infty(\mathds{R}^d)$ be such that an $\varepsilon$-neighbourhood of $\supp χ$ is contained in $Ω$. Let $ν\in (0,1]$ and suppose that the ${c_{kl}}_{|Ω} \in C^{0,ν}(Ω)$. Then we prove (Hölder) Gaussian kernel bounds for the kernel of the operator $u \mapsto χ\, S_t (χ\, u)$, where $S$ is the semigroup generated by $-A$. Moreover, if $ν= 1$ and the coefficients are real, then we prove Gaussian bounds for the kernel of the operator $u \mapsto χ\, S_t u$ and for the derivatives in the first variable. Finally we show boundedness on $L_p(\mathds{R}^d)$ of various Riesz transforms.

Partial spectral multipliers and partial Riesz transforms for degenerate operators

We consider degenerate differential operators $A = \displaystyle{\sum_{k,j=1}^d \partial_k (a_{kj} \partial_j)}$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with real symmetric bounded measurable coefficients. Given a function $χ\in C_b^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d)$ (respectively, $Ω$ a bounded Lipschitz domain) and suppose that $(a_{kj}) \ge μ> 0$ a.e.\ on $ \supp χ$ (resp., a.e.\ on $Ω$). We prove a spectral multiplier type result: if $F\colon [0, \infty) \to \mathbb{C}$ is such that $\sup_{t > 0} \| φ(.) F(t .) \|_{C^s} < \infty$ for some non-trivial function $φ\in C_c^\infty(0,\infty)$ and some $s > d/2$ then $M_χF(I+A) M_χ$ is weak type $(1,1)$ (resp.\ $P_ΩF(I+A) P_Ω$ is weak type $(1,1)$). We also prove boundedness on $L^p$ for all $p \in (1,2]$ of the partial Riesz transforms $M_χ\nabla (I + A)^{-1/2}M_ χ$. The proofs are based on a criterion for a singular integral operator to be weak type $(1,1)$.

Square roots of perturbed subelliptic operators on Lie groups

We solve the Kato square root problem for bounded measurable perturbations of subelliptic operators on connected Lie groups. The subelliptic operators are divergence form operators with complex bounded coefficients, which may have lower order terms. In this general setting we deduce inhomogeneous estimates. In case the group is nilpotent and the subelliptic operator is pure second order, then we prove stronger homogeneous estimates. Furthermore, we prove Lipschitz stability of the estimates under small perturbations of the coefficients.

From forms to semigroups

Form methods give a very efficient tool to solve evolutionary problems on Hilbert space. They were developed by T. Kato [Kat] and, in slightly different language by J.L. Lions. In this expository article we give an introduction based on [AE2]. The main point in our approach is that the notion of closability is not needed anymore. The new setting is particularly efficient for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and degenerate equations. Besides this we give several other examples. This presentation starts by an introduction to holomorphic semigroups. Instead of the contour argument found in the literature, we give a more direct argument based on the Hille--Yosida theorem.

Sectorial forms and degenerate differential operators

If $a$ is a densely defined sectorial form in a Hilbert space which is possibly not closable, then we associate in a natural way a holomorphic semigroup generator with $a$. This allows us to remove in several theorems of semigroup theory the assumption that the form is closed or symmetric. Many examples are provided, ranging from complex sectorial differential operators, to Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators and operators with Robin or Wentzell boundary conditions.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on rough domains

We consider a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\rm R}^d$ whose boundary $Γ$ has a finite $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Then we define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $D_0$ on $L_2(Γ)$ by form methods. The operator $-D_0$ is self-adjoint and generates a contractive $C_0$-semigroup $S = (S_t)_{t > 0}$ on $L_2(Γ)$. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_t$ as $t \to \infty$ is related to properties of the trace of functions in $H^1(Ω)$ which $Ω$ may or may not have.

Dirichlet forms and degenerate elliptic operators

It is shown that the theory of real symmetric second-order elliptic operators in divergence form on $\Ri^d$ can be formulated in terms of a regular strongly local Dirichlet form irregardless of the order of degeneracy. The behaviour of the corresponding evolution semigroup $S_t$ can be described in terms of a function $(A,B) \mapsto d(A ;B)\in[0,\infty]$ over pairs of measurable subsets of $\Ri^d$. Then \[ |(ϕ_A,S_tϕ_B)|\leq e^{-d(A;B)^2(4t)^{-1}}\|ϕ_A\|_2\|ϕ_B\|_2 \] for all $t>0$ and all $ϕ_A\in L_2(A)$, $ϕ_B\in L_2(B)$. Moreover $S_tL_2(A)\subseteq L_2(A)$ for all $t>0$ if and only if $d(A ;A^c)=\infty$ where $A^c$ denotes the complement of $A$.

Second-order operators with degenerate coefficients

We consider properties of second-order operators $H = -\sum^d_{i,j=1} \partial_i \, c_{ij} \, \partial_j$ on $\Ri^d$ with bounded real symmetric measurable coefficients. We assume that $C = (c_{ij}) \geq 0$ almost everywhere, but allow for the possibility that $C$ is singular. We associate with $H$ a canonical self-adjoint viscosity operator $H_0$ and examine properties of the viscosity semigroup $S^{(0)}$ generated by $H_0$. The semigroup extends to a positive contraction semigroup on the $L_p$-spaces with $p \in [1,\infty]$. We establish that it conserves probability, satisfies $L_2$~off-diagonal bounds and that the wave equation associated with $H_0$ has finite speed of propagation. Nevertheless $S^{(0)}$ is not always strictly positive because separation of the system can occur even for subelliptic operators. This demonstrates that subelliptic semigroups are not ergodic in general and their kernels are neither strictly positive nor Hölder continuous. In particular one can construct examples for which both upper and lower Gaussian bounds fail even with coefficients in $C^{2-\varepsilon}(\Ri^d)$ with $\varepsilon > 0$.

Uniform subellipticity

We establish two global subellipticity properties of positive symmetric second-order partial differential operators on $L_2(\Ri^d)$. First, if $m \in \Ni$ then we consider operators $H_0$ with coefficients in $W^{m+1,\infty}(\Ri^d)$ and domain $D(H_0)=W^{\infty,2}(\Ri^d)$ satisfying the subellipticity property \[ c (ϕ, (I+H_0)ϕ)\geq \|Δ^{γ/2} ϕ\|_2^2 \] for some $c>0$ and $γ\in<0,1]$, uniformly for all $ϕ\in W^{\infty,2}(\Ri^d)$, where $Δ$ denotes the usual Laplacian. Then we prove that $D(H^α) \subseteq D(Δ^{αγ})$ for all $α\in [0,2^{-1} (m + 1 + γ^{-1})>$. Hence there is a $c>0$ such that the norm estimate \[ c \|(I+H)^αϕ\|_2\geq \|Δ^{αγ} ϕ\|_2 \] is valid for all $ϕ\in D(H^α)$ where $H$ denotes the self-adjoint closure of $H_0$. In particular, if the coefficients of $H_0$ are in $C_b^\infty(\Ri^d)$ then the conclusion is valid for all $α\geq0$. Secondly, we prove that if \[ H_0=\sum^N_{i=1}X_i^* X_i, \] where the $X_i$ are vector fields on $\Ri^d$ with coefficients in $C_b^\infty(\Ri^d)$ satisfying a uniform version of Hörmander's criterion for hypoellipticity, then $H_0$ satisfies the subellipticity condition for $γ=r^{-1}$ where $r$ is the rank of the set of vector fields. Consequently $D(H^n) \subseteq D(Δ^{n/r})$ for all $n \in \Ni$, where $H$ is the closure of $H_0$.
