Quintessential Axions

I review the dark energy solutions by a very light pseudoscalar called "quintessential axion". For the explicit breaking terms, we consider both the global anomaly U(1)$_{\rm global}\times$SU(2)$_W^2$ and the potential $ΔV$. At the field theory level, we will present a strategy for picking up one such pseudoscalar among plenty of pseudoscalars. At string level, numerous antisymmetric tensor fields are pseudoscalars. Including these, we present a confining force example via a $Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification of SO(32) heterotic string. In addition, we also aim to draw attention on almost massless mesons of confining nonabelian gauge group, which can be another motivation for introducing an additional confining force, to explain dark energy as the vacuum energy of these mesons.

Anticorrelation of Mass and Mixing Angle Hierarchies

We obtain a relationship between the hierarchies of mixing angles and of masses pertinent to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix and the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) lepton mixing matrix. Using this relationship, we argue that the more severe hierarchy of the charge-$\frac{2}{3}$ quark masses requires that the CKM matrix be close to a unit matrix whereas the milder hierarchy of the neutrino masses allows the PMNS matrix to depart markedly from the CKM matrix and contain large mixing angles of the type that are observed.

Tetrahedral Symmetry A$_{\bf 4}$ in Anti-SU(5) GUT

We construct a flavor model in an anti-SU(5) GUT with a tetrahedral symmetry $A_4$. We choose a basis where $Q_{text{em}}=-\frac13$ quarks and charged leptons are already mass eigenstates. This choice is possible from the $A_4$ symmetry. Then, matter representation $\overline{10}_{-1}^{\rm\, matter}$ contains both a quark doublet and a heavy neutrino $N$, which enables us to use the $A_4$ symmetry to both $Q_{text{em}}=+\frac23$ quark masses and neutrino masses (through the see-saw via $N$). This is made possible because the anti-SU(5) breaking is achieved by the Higgs fields transforming as anti-symmetric representations of SU(5), $\overline{10}_{-1}^H\oplus 10_{+1}^H$, reducing the rank-5 anti-SU(5) group down to the rank-4 standard model group \smg. For possible mass matrices, the $A_4$ symmetry predictions on mass matrices at field theory level are derived. Finally, an illustration from string compactification is presented.

Jarlskog determinant and data on flavor matrices

The essences of the weak CP violation, the quark and lepton Jarlskog invariants, are determined toward future model buildings beyond the Standard Model (SM). The equivalence of two calculations of Jarlskog invariants gives a bound on the CP phase in some parametrization. Satisfying the unitarity condition, we obtain the CKM and MNS matrices from the experimental data, and present the results in matrix forms. The Jarlskog determinant $J^q$ in the quark sector is found to be $\sim 3.11\times 10^{-5}|\sin\delks|$ while $J^\ell$ in the leptonic sector is $\sim 2.96\times 10^{-2}|\sin\delksl|$ in the normal hierarchy parametrization.

A possible relation between leptogenesis and PMNS phases

We propose a new scenario for baryogenesis through leptogenesis, where the CP phase relevant for leptogenesis is connected directly to the PMNS phase(s) in the light neutrino mixing matrix. The scenario is realized in case only one CP phase appears in the full theory, originating from the complex vacuum expextation value of a standard model singlet field. In order to realize this scheme, the electroweak symmetry is required to be broken during the leptogenesis era and a new loop diagram with an intermediate $W$ boson exchange including the low energy neutrino mixing matrix should play the dominant contribution to the CP violation for leptogenesis. In this letter, we discuss the new basic mechanism, which we call type-II leptogenesis, and give an estimate for maximally reachable baryon asymmetry depending on the PMNS phases.

An ultralight pseudoscalar boson

Using a fundamental discrete symmetry, $\mathbb{Z}_N$, we construct a two-axion model with the QCD axion solving the strong-$CP$ problem, and an ultralight axion (ULA) with $m_{\rm ULA}\approx 10^{-22}\text{ eV}$ providing the dominant form of dark matter (DM). The ULA is light enough to be detectable in cosmology from its imprints on structure formation, and may resolve the small-scale problems of cold DM. The necessary relative DM abundances occur without fine tuning in constructions with decay constants $f_{\rm ULA}\sim 10^{17}\text{ GeV}$, and $f_{\rm QCD}\sim 10^{11}\text{ GeV}$. An example model achieving this has $N=24$, and we construct a range of other possibilities. We compute the ULA couplings to the Standard Model, and discuss prospects for direct detection. The QCD axion may be detectable in standard experiments through the $\vec{E}\cdot\vec{B}$ and $G\tilde{G}$ couplings. In the simplest models, however, the ULA has identically zero coupling to both $G\tilde{G}$ of QCD and $\vec{E}\cdot\vec{B}$ of electromagnetism due to vanishing electromagnetic and color anomalies. The ULA couples to fermions with strength $g\propto 1/f_{\rm ULA}$. This coupling causes spin precession of nucleons and electrons with respect to the DM wind with period $t\sim$months. Current limits do not exclude the predicted coupling strength, and our model is within reach of the CASPEr-Wind experiment, using nuclear magnetic resonance.

Couplings between QCD axion and photon from string compactification

The QCD axion couplings of various invisible axion models are presented. In particular, the exact global symmetry U(1)$_{\rm PQ}$ in the superpotential is possible for the anomalous U(1) from string compactification, broken only by the gauge anomalies at one loop level, and is shown to have the resultant invisible axion coupling to photon, $c_{aγγ}\ge \frac83-c_{aγγ}^{\rm ch\,br}$ where $c_{aγγ}^{\rm ch\,br}\simeq 2$. However, this bound is not applicable in approximate U(1)$_{\rm PQ}$ models with sufficiently suppressed U(1)$_{\rm PQ}$-breaking superpotential terms. We also present a simple method to obtain $c_{aγγ}^0$ which is the value obtained above the electroweak scale.

CP-Conservation in QCD and why only "invisible" Axions work

Among solutions of the strong CP problem, the "invisible" axion in the narrow axion window is argued to be the remaining possibility among natural solutions on the smallness of $\barθ$. Related to the gravity spoil of global symmetries, some prospective invisible axions from theory point of view are discussed. In all these discussions, including the observational possibility, cosmological constraints must be included.

Is an axizilla possible for di-photon resonance?

Heavy axion-like particles, called axizillas, are simple extensions of the standard model(SM). An axizilla is required not to couple to the quarks, leptons, and Brout-Englert-Higgs doublets of the SM, but couple to the gauge anomalies of the $W^\pm, Z$ and photon. It is possible to have its branching ratios(BRs) to two photons greater than 10% and to two $Z$'s less than 10%. To have a (production cross section)$\cdot $(BR to di-photons) at a $10^{-38}\,\textrm{cm}^2$ level, a TeV scale heavy quark $Q$ is required for the gluon--quark fusion process. The decay of $Q$ to axizilla plus quark, and the subsequent decay of the axizilla to two photons can be fitted at the required level of $10^{-38}\,\textrm{cm}^2$.

Type-II Leptogenesis

I will talk on our new theory on baryogenesis through type-II leptogenesis which is different from the well-known type-I leptogenesis. I will comment on the Jarlskog phases, $δ_{\rm CKM}$ and $δ_{\rm PMNS}$, in the CKM and PMNS matrices. In the type-II leptogenesis, the PMNS phase is used for Sakharov's condition on the global quantum number generation in the Universe. For this to be effective, the SU(2)$\times$U(1) gauge symmetry must be broken during the leptogenesis epoch.

Axions, strong and weak CP, and KNP inflation

I review the ideas leading to the QCD axion and also comment on the Jarlskog determinant describing the observed weak CP violation, and the axion-related Kim-Nilles-Peloso inflation. All of these use pseudoscalars, and the underlying principle is the discrete gauge symmetry either in the bottom-up or top-down approaches. Here, the effects of gravity are required to be unimportant in the low energy effective theory. String compactification is safe from the gravity spoil of global symmetries and some examples from string compactification are commented.

Calculation of axion-photon-photon coupling in string theory

The axion search experiments invite a plausible estimation of the axion--photon--photon coupling constant $\overline{c}_{aγγ}$ in string models with phenomenologically acceptable visible sectors. We present the calculation of $\overline{c}_{aγγ}$ with an exact Peccei-Quinn symmetry. In the Huh-Kim-Kyae $\Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification, we obtain $\overline{c}_{aγγ} =\frac{8}{3}$ even with a lot of singlets at the GUT scale, and the low-temperature axion search experiments will probe the QCD corrected coupling, $ {c}_{aγγ} \simeq \overline{c}_{aγγ}-1.98\simeq 0.69$.

Perspective on completing natural inflation

We present a perspective on the inflation paths in 2-, 3-,,, N-flation models based on the ultraviolet completion in heterotic string theory, where a number of grand unification scale axions are used. The number of non-Abelian gauge groups for a natural inflation is restricted in string compactification, and we argue that the most plausible completion of natural inflation from a theory perspective is the 2-flation.

The CKM matrix from anti-SU(7) unification of GUT families

We estimate the CKM matrix elements in the recently proposed minimal model, anti-SU(7) GUT for the family unification, $[\,3\,]+2\,[\,2\,]+8\,[\,\bar{1}\,]$+\,(singlets). It is shown that the real angles of the right-handed unitary matrix diagonalizing the mass matrix can be determined to fit the Particle Data Group data. However, the phase in the right-handed unitary matrix is not constrained very much. We also includes an argument about allocating the Jarlskog phase in the CKM matrix. Phenomenologically, there are three classes of possible parametrizations, $\delq=α,β,$ or $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. For the choice of $\delq=α$, the phase is close to a maximal one.

Towards unification of GUT families

I discuss the mere 5 % of atoms in the cosmic energy pie. It is basically the chiral matter problem. Then, I review the chiral matter problem from a grand unification (GUT) point of view, and point out that anti-SU(N), easily implementable in string compactification, is a possibility. Here `anti-' means that the GUT group breaking is through the anti-symmetric tensor field(s), e.g. <Φ^{[AB]}>= <Φ_{[AB]}>. We argued for an anti-SU(7) [= SU(7) x U(1)] families-unification model from a Z(12-I) orbifold compactification. The Z(12-I) orbifold is briefly discussed and the multiplicity 2 in the T3 twisted sector is the key obtaining three chiral families. Yukawa coupling structure is shown to be promising. A numerical study shows that the anti-SU(7) model satisfies the CKM fit. It is shown that the doublet-triplet splitting is obtained naturally, where the dominant process for proton decay is by the exchange of GUT scale gauge bosons such that proton to pi-zero plus positron is the dominant channel.

Towards unity of families: anti-SU(7) from Z(12-I) orbifold compactification

The problem of families, "Why are there three families of fermions?", is a long awaited question to be answered within a reasonable framework. We propose anti-SU($N$) groups for the unification of families in grand unification (GUT) groups, where the separation of color and weak gauge groups in the GUT is achieved by antisymmetric tensor Brout-Englert-Higgs boson instead of an adjoint representation. Theories of anti-SU($N$)'s are proposed for the unification of families. The minimal model is found as \antiSD \, GUT with the fermion representation [3]+2[2]+8[\bar-1]. We present an example in a Z(12-I) orbifold compactification, where the missing partner mechanism is also realized.

Unifying CP violations of quark and lepton sectors

A preliminary determination of the Dirac phase in the PMNS matrix is $\dell\approx -\fracπ{2}$. A rather accurately determined Jarlskog invariant $J$ in the CKM matrix is close to the maximum. Since the phases in the CKM and PMNS matrices will be accurately determined in the future, it is an interesting problem to relate these two phases. This can be achieved in a families-unified grand unification if the weak CP violation is introduced spontaneously {\it à la} Froggatt and Nielsen at a high energy scale, where only one meaningful Dirac CP phase appears.

Bosonic Coherent Motions in the Universe

We mini-review the role of fundamental spin-0 bosons as bosonic coherent motion (BCM) in the Universe. The fundamental spin-0 bosons have the potential to account for the baryon number generation, cold dark matter (CDM) via BCM, dark energy, and inflation. Among these, here we focus on the CDM possibility because it can be experimentally tested with the current experimental techniques. We also comment briefly on the panoply of the other roles of spin-0 bosons.

Calculations of resonance enhancement factor in axion-search tube-experiments

It is pointed out that oscillating current density, produced due to the coupling between an external magnetic field and the cosmic axion field, can excite the TM resonant modes inside an open-ended cavity (tube). By systematically solving the field equations of axion-electrodynamics we obtain explicit expressions for the oscillating fields induced inside a cylindrical tube. We calculate the enhancement factor when a resonance condition is met. While the power obtained for TM modes replicates the previous result, we emphasize that the knowledge of explicit field configurations inside a tube opens up new ways to design axion experiments including a recent proposal to detect the induced fields using a superconducting LC circuit. In addition, as an example, we estimate the induced fields in a cylindrical tube in the presence of a static uniform magnetic field applied only to a part of its volume.

Dark energy from approximate U(1)_{de} symmetry

The PLANCK observation strengthens the argument that the observed acceleration of the Universe is dominated by the invisible component of dark energy. We address how this extremely small DE density can be obtained in an ultraviolet completed theory. From two mass scales, the grand unification scale M_G and the Higgs boson mass, we parametrize this dark energy(DE). To naturally generate an extremely small DE term, we introduce an almost flat DE potential of a pseudo-Goldstone boson of an approximate global symmetry U(1)_{de} from some discrete symmetries allowed in an ultraviolet completed theory. For the DE potential to be extremely shallow, the pseudo-Goldstone boson is required not to couple to the QCD anomaly. This fixes uniquely the nonrenormalizable term generating the potential suppressed by M_G^7 in supergravity models.

Dark matter production in the early Universe: beyond the thermal WIMP paradigm

Increasingly stringent limits from LHC searches for new physics, coupled with lack of convincing signals of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) in dark matter searches, have tightly constrained many realizations of the standard paradigm of thermally produced WIMPs as cold dark matter. In this article, we review more generally both thermally and non-thermally produced dark matter (DM). One may classify DM models into two broad categories: one involving bosonic coherent motion (BCM) and the other involving WIMPs. BCM and WIMP candidates need, respectively, some approximate global symmetries and almost exact discrete symmetries. Supersymmetric axion models are highly motivated since they emerge from compelling and elegant solutions to the two fine-tuning problems of the Standard Model: the strong CP problem and the gauge hierarchy problem. We review here non-thermal relics in a general setup, but we also pay particular attention to the rich cosmological properties of various aspects of mixed SUSY/axion dark matter candidates which can involve both WIMPs and BCM in an interwoven manner. We also review briefly a panoply of alternative thermal and non-thermal DM candidates.

Final state interaction phases using data from CP asymmetries

Evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics might be revealed through CP violation. Experimental results from BaBar, Belle, and most recently from LHCb are very interesting in this respect. It is important to calculate various CP violation parameters within the SM. In this Letter, the final state interaction (FSI) phases with the CKM matrix are calculated using the recent experimental results from LHCb on CP violation in B0 and Bs0 meson decays. To obtain the allowed regions of the FSI phases, a simplified form of the Jarlskog determinant of the CKM matrix is used and the CP phase delta close to the maximal value of pi/2 is found. Then, the asymmetry data on B0 and Bs0 from LHCb is used to explore graphically the allowed regions of the FSI phases.

High scale inflation, model-independent string axion, and QCD axion with domain wall number one

The recent BICEP2 result shows that the Universe once has gone through the vacuum with the GUT scale energy density. The implied high scale inflation nullifies the dilution idea of topological defects, strings and domain walls, of the axionic system. In particular, domain walls are disastrous if the domain wall problem with domain-wall number greater than 1 is present. We argue that the model-independent axion in string compactification with the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry resolves the domain wall problem naturally with a symmetry principle.

Modeling small dark energy scale with quintessential pseudoscalar boson

Democracy among the same type of particles is a useful paradigm in studying masses and interactions of particles with supersymmetry(SUSY) or without SUSY. This simple idea predicts the presence of massless particles. We attempt to use one of these massless pseudoscalar particles as generating the cosmological dark energy(DE) potential. To achieve the extremely shallow potential of DE, the pseudoscalar boson is required not to couple to the QCD anomaly. So, we consider two pseudoscalars, one coupling to the QCD anomaly (i.e. QCD axion) and the other not coupling to the QCD anomaly. To obtain these two pseudoscalars, we introduce two approximate global U(1) symmetries to realize them as the pseudo-Goldstone bosons of the spontaneously broken U(1)'s. These global symmetries are dictated by a gravity respected discrete symmetry. Specifically, we consider an S2(L) X S2(R) X Z(10R) example, and attempt to obtain the DE scale in terms of two observed fundamental mass scales, the grand unification scale M(G) and the electroweak scale v(ew).

New confining force solution of QCD axion domain wall problem

The serious cosmological problems created by the axion-string/axion-domain-wall system in standard axion models are alleviated by positing the existence of a new confining force. The instantons of this force can generate an axion potential that erases the axion strings long before QCD effects become important, thus preventing QCD-generated axion walls from ever appearing. Axion walls generated by the new confining force would decay so early as not to contribute significantly to the energy in axion dark matter.

Numerical calcultaion of e-fold number from hilltop with two inflatons

We consider a cosmological inflation with two inflatons, $ϕ$ and $X$. The inflation potential is a hilltop form in the $ϕ$ space and $X$ is a sideway down-fall field in the region $ϕ\ge m$. In this model, we calculate the $e$-fold number numerically starting from the intitial point which is in the vicinity of the hilltop point. Firstly, by varying parameters and initial conditions the inflaton path field $φ$ for the BICEP2 point, $φ_{\rm BCP2}$, is found to give $ n_s\simeq 0.96$ and $r\simeq 0.16$. Next, from the point $φ_{\rm BCP2}$ to the end of inflation the e-fold number is obtained. We find a reasonable set of parameters allowing the e-fold number in the range 50-60.

The inflation point in U(1)$_{de}$ hilltop potential assisted by chaoton, BICEP2 data, and trans-Planckian decay constant

The recent BICEP2 report on the CMB B-mode polarization hints an early Universe energy density at the GUT scale. We add a new 'chaoton' term to our recently proposed hilltop potential to have a large tensor mode fluctuation. The chaoton field slides down from the hilltop when the inflaton field value is small so that an enough e-folding is possible. We also comment how the trans-Planckian decay constant is obtained from some discrete symmetries of ultra-violet completed models.

General self-tuning solutions and no-go theorem

We consider brane world models with one extra dimension. In the bulk there is in addition to gravity a three form gauge potential or equivalently a scalar (by generalisation of electric magnetic duality). We find classical solutions for which the 4d effective cosmological constant is adjusted by choice of integration constants. No go theorems for such self-tuning mechanism are circumvented by unorthodox Lagrangians for the three form respectively the scalar. It is argued that the corresponding effective 4d theory always includes tachyonic Kaluza-Klein excitations or ghosts. Known no go theorems are extended to a general class of models with unorthodox Lagrangians.

Review of axino dark matter

We review the status of axino dark matter. Two hierarchy problems, the strong CP problem and the gauge hierarchy problem, have led to introducing into particle physics a spontaneously broken global Peccei-Quinn symmetry and a softly broken supersymmetry, respectively. Combining them implies the presence of not only an axion, but also of its scalar component, saxion, and their fermionic partner, axino. Among these, the axion and the axino are attractive dark matter candidates. Various possibilities for the axino as dark matter are discussed.

Axino Cold Dark Matter Revisited

Axino arises in supersymmetric versions of axion models and is a natural candidate for cold or warm dark matter. Here we revisit axino dark matter produced thermally and non-thermally in light of recent developments. First we discuss the definition of axino relative to low energy axion one for several KSVZ and DFSZ models of the axion. Then we review and refine the computation of the dominant QCD production in order to avoid unphysical cross-sections and, depending on the model, to include production via SU(2) and U(1) interactions and Yukawa couplings.

Axino mass

I will talk on my recent works. Axino, related to the SUSY transformation of axion, can mix with Goldstino in principle. In this short talk, I would like to explain what is the axino mass and its plausible mass range. The axino mass is known to have a hierarchical mass structure depending on accidental symmetries. With only one axino, if G_A=0 where G=K+ 2ln|W|, we obtain axino mass= gravitino mass. For G_A nonzero, the axino mass depends on the details of the Kaehler potential. I also comment on the usefulness of a new parametrization of the CKM matrix.

Inverted effective SUSY with combined Z' and gravity mediation, and muon anomalous magnetic moment

Effective supersymmetry(SUSY) where stop is the lightest squark may run into a two-loop tachyonic problem in some Z' mediation models. In addition, a large A term or/and a large stop mass are needed to have about a 126 GeV Higgs boson with three families of quarks and leptons. Thus, we suggest an inverted effective SUSY(IeffSUSY) where stop mass is larger compared to those of the first two families. In this case, it is possible to have a significant correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon. A three family IeffSUSY in a Z' mediation scenario is explicitly studied with the Z' quantum number related to B-L. Here, we adopt both the Z' mediation and gravity mediation where the Z' mediation is the dominant one for stop, while the gravity mediation is the dominant one for the muonic leptons and Higgs multiplets. We present a numerical study based on a specific anomaly free model, and show the existence of the parameter region where all the phenomenological conditions are satisfied.

Mixing of axino and goldstino, and axino mass

Axino, related to the SUSY transformation of axion, can mix with goldstino in principle. This case is realized when some superfields carrying nonvanishing Peccei-Quinn charges develop both scalar VEVs and F-terms. In this case, we present a proper definition of axion and axino. With this definition, we present the QCD axino mass in the most general framework, including non-minimal Kähler potential. The axino mass is known to have a hierarchical mass structure depending on accidental symmetries. With only one axino, if $G_A=0$ where $G=K+\ln|W|^2$, we obtain $m_{\tilde a}=m_{3/2}$. For $G_A\ne 0$, the axino mass depends on the details of the Kähler potential. In the gauge mediation scenario, the gaugino mass is the dominant axino mass parameter. Therefore, we can take the theoretical QCD axino mass as a free parameter in the study of its cosmological effects, ranging from eV to multi-TeV scales, without a present knowledge on its ultraviolet completion.

Singlet superfield extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with Peccei-Quinn symmetry and a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson at the LHC

Motivated by the mu-problem and the axion solution to the strong CP-problem, we extend the MSSM with one more chiral singlet field $X_e$. The underlying PQ-symmetry allows only one more term $X_e H_u H_d$ in the superpotential. The spectrum of the Higgs system includes a light pseudoscalar $a_X$ (in addition to the standard CP-even Higgs boson), predominantly decaying to two photons: $a_X \to γγ$. Both Higgs bosons might be in the range accessible to current LHC experiments.

Z' from SU(6)$\times$SU(2)_h GUT, Wjj anomaly and Higgs boson mass bound

A general electroweak scale $Z'$ is applied in a supersymmetric SU(6)$\timesSU(2)_h$ grand unification model, to have a $\Z_6$ for the hexality. We briefly show that there cannot exist any baryonic U(1)$'_B$ in any subgroup of E$_6$. Any effect that requires sizable $Z'$ couplings to quarks like the reported Wjj anomaly of CDF, if observed, implies a substantial $Z'$ coupling to leptons or Higgs doublets. The kinetic mixing considered in a supersymmetric model from E$_6$ is restricted by the gauge coupling unification and neutrino mixing. The mass of $Z'$ is strongly constrained by the electroweak $ρ_0$ parameter. We conclude that $Z'$ mass much above 10 TeV is favored by considering the neutrino mixing and proton decay constraint in supersymmetric models. In this sense, the CDF $Wjj$ anomaly cannot be fitted to any electroweak model descending from E$_6$. Furthermore, if $Z'$ is found at several hundred GeV, any grand unification group embedded in E$_6$ such as SU(6)$\times$SU(2), SO(10), SU(5)$\times$U(1), SU(5), SU(4)$\times$SU(4), and SU(3)$^3$, needs fine-tuned gauge couplings. We also discuss the U(1)$'$ effect on the tree level mass of the lightest MSSM Higgs boson.

An exact CKM matrix related to the approximate Wolfenstein form

Noting the hierarchy between three mixing angles, $θ_{2,3}={\cal O}(θ_1^2)$, we present an exact form of the quark mixing matrix, replacing Wolfenstein's approximate form. In addition, we suggest to rotate the unitarity triangle, using the weak CP phase convention where the phase is located at the (31) element $\sinθ_1\sinθ_2 e^{iδ}$ while the (13) element $\sinθ_1\sinθ_3$ is real. For the $(ab)$ unitarity triangle, the base line (x-axis) is defined from the product of the first row elements, $V_{1a}V^*_{1b}$, and the angle between two sides at the origin is defined to be the phase $δ$. This is a useful definition since every Jarlskog triangle has the angle $δ$ at the origin, defined directly from the unitarity condition. It is argued that $δ$ represents the barometer of the weak CP violation, which can be used to relate it to possible Yukawa textures.

Gauge mediation to effective SUSY through U(1)s with a dynamical SUSY breaking, and string compactification

We investigate the possibility of U(1)' mediation, leading to an effective SUSY where the first two family sfermions are above 100 TeV but the third family sfermions and the Higgs doublets are in the TeV region(or the light stop case). The U(1)' gaugino, Zprimino, needs not to be at a TeV scale, but needs to be somewhat lighter than the messenger scale. We consider two cases, one the mediation is only through U(1)' and the other through U(1)' and the electroweak hypercharge U(1)_Y. In the SUSY field theory framework, we calculate the superpartner mass spectra for these two cases. We also point out that the particle species needed for these mechanisms are already obtained from a Z(12-I) orbifold compactification.

Parametrization of PMNS matrix based on dodeca-symmetry

The dodeca symmetry is designed to obtain the Cabibbo angle $θ_C^{\rm CKM}$ approximately $15^{\rm o}$ and the (11) element of $\Vp$ as $\cos 30^{\rm o}$, leading to $θ_1^{\rm PMNS}+θ_C^{\rm CKM}\simeq 45^{\rm o}$. This leading order dodeca symmetric $\Vp$ is corrected by small parameters, especially as an expansion in terms of a small parameter $β$. Neglecting two Majorana phases, the expression of $\Vp$ contains four parameters: a small $β$, and three $\Od(1)$ parameters $A,B,$ and $δ$. From the neutrino oscillation data, we present two parametrizations and estimate their $β$'s.

Quark and lepton mixing angles with a dodeca-symmetry

The discrete symmetry D_12 at the electroweak scale is used to fix the quark and lepton mixing angles. At the leading order, the Cabbibo angle theta_C is 15^o, and the PMNS matrix is of a bi-dodeca-mixing form giving the Solar-neutrino angle theta_sol=30^o. Thus, there results the relation theta_sol+theta_C ~ 45^o. Out of discrete vacua, a certain vacuum is chosen for this assignment to be consistent with the dodeca-symmetry. A shift of theta_C from 15^o to 13.14^o might arise from a small breaking of the dodeca-symmetry. The spontaneous breaking leading to the required electroweak vacuum is made possible by introducing an additional parity in an effective field approach or by realizing the electroweak dodeca-symmetry explicitly at a high energy scale. At the vacuum we chose Arg.Det.M_q is nonzero, and hence a solution of the strong CP problem invites a very light axion at a high energy scale. We also comment how the next level corrections can fit the mixing angles to the observed values.

The recent accurate determination of the CKM parameters including the maximal CP phase 90 degrees enables us to write down the up-type and down-type quark mass matrices to a high degree of accuracy. The lightest element(the uu element) of the quark mass texture (not the mass eigenvalue) has a power lambda**6 where lambda=sin(Cabibbo angle). The CP phase of 360 degrees divided by an integer hints a discrete symmetry. Since lambda**6 is the highest power among the quark mass matrix elements, we present as an example a possibility that the maximal CP phase 90 degrees is obtainable from a supersymmetric Z(12) discrete symmetry model.

The D0 same-charge dimuon asymmetry and possibile new CP violation sources in the $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ system

Recently, the D0 collaboration reported a large CP violation in the same-sign dimuon charge asymmetry which has the $3.2 σ$ deviation from the value estimated in the Standard Model. In this paper, several new physics models are considered: the MSSM, two Higgs doublet model, the recent dodeca model, and a new $Z'$ model. Generally, it is hard to achieve such a large CP violation consistently with other experimental constraints. We find that a scheme with extra non-anomalous U(1)$'$ gauge symmetry is barely consistent. In general, the extra $Z'$ gauge boson induces the flavor changing neutral current interactions at tree level, which is the basic reason allowing a large new physics CP violation. To preserve the U(1)$'$ symmetry at high energy, SU(2)$_L$ singlet exotic heavy quarks of mass above 1 TeV and the Standard Model gauge singlet scalars are introduced.

Amplification of endpoint structure for new particle mass measurement at the LHC

We introduce a new collider variable, MCT2, named as constransverse mass. It is a mixture of `stransverse mass(MT2)' and `contransverse mass(MCT)' variables, where the usual endpoint structure of MT2 distribution can be amplified in the MCT2 basis by large Jacobian factor which is controlled by trial missing particle mass. Thus the MCT2 projection of events increases our observability to measure several important endpoints from new particle decays, which are usually expected to be buried by irreducible backgrounds with various systematic uncertainties at the LHC. In this paper we explain the phenomenology of endpoint amplification in MCT2 projection, and describe how one may employ this variable to measure several meaningful mass constraints of new particles.

Cosmological constant is probably adjustable in brane worlds

In the brane world scenario, possessing the self-tuning property of the cosmological constant, we study the probability amplitude for an initial state of the Universe to transform to final states with some curvatures. In the Kim, Kyae and Lee model, there exists a finite range of parameters such that the transition amplitude to a near flat universe is exponentially dominated by the smallness of curvature, > e^{positive number}/{Lambda-bar}^2}, i.e. is dominated by an almost flat universe of |Lambda-bar|<epsilon.

Self-tuning of the cosmological constant

Here, I discuss the cosmological constant (CC) problems, in particular paying attention to the vanishing cosmological constant. There are three cosmological constant problems in particle physics. Hawking's idea of calculating the probability amplitude for our Universe is peaked at CC = 0 which I try to obtain after the initial inflationary period using a self-tuning model. I review what has been discussed on the Hawking type calculation, and present a (probably) correct way to calculate the amplitude, and show that the Kim-Kyae-Lee self-tuning model allows a finite range of parameters for the CC = 0 to have a singularly large probability, approached from the AdS side.

Axions and the Strong CP Problem

Current upper bounds of the neutron electric dipole moment constrain the physically observable quantum chromodynamic (QCD) vacuum angle $|\barθ| \lesssim 10^{-11}$. Since QCD explains vast experimental data from the 100 MeV scale to the TeV scale, it is better to explain this smallness of $|\barθ|$ in the QCD framework, which is the strong \Ca\Pa problem. Now, there exist two plausible solutions to this problem, one of which leads to the existence of the very light axion. The axion decay constant window, $10^9\ {\gev}\lesssim F_a\lesssim 10^{12} \gev$ for a ${\cal O}(1)$ initial misalignment angle $θ_1$, has been obtained by astrophysical and cosmological data. For $F_a\gtrsim 10^{12}$ GeV with $θ_1<{\cal O}(1)$, axions may constitute a significant fraction of dark matter of the universe. The supersymmetrized axion solution of the strong \Ca\Pa problem introduces its superpartner the axino which might have affected the universe evolution significantly. Here, we review the very light axion (theory, supersymmetrization, and models) with the most recent particle, astrophysical and cosmological data, and present prospects for its discovery.

White dwarf axions, PAMELA data, and flipped-SU(5)

Recently, there are two hints arising from physics beyond the standard model. One is a possible energy loss mechanism due to emission of very weakly interacting light particles from white dwarf stars, with a coupling strength ~ 0.7x10^{-13}, and another is the high energy positrons observed by the PAMELA satellite experiment. We construct a supersymmetric flipped-SU(5) model, SU(5)xU(1)_X with appropriate additional symmetries, [U(1)_H]_{gauge}x[U(1)_RxU(1)_Γ]_{global}xZ_2, such that these are explained by a very light electrophilic axion of mass 0.5 meV from the spontaneously broken U(1)_Γand two component cold dark matters from Z_2 parity. We show that in the flipped-SU(5) there exists a basic mechanism for allowing excess positrons through the charged SU(2) singlet leptons, but not allowing anti-proton excess due to the absence of the SU(2) singlet quarks. We show the discovery potential of the charged SU(2) singlet E at the LHC experiments by observing the electron and positron spectrum. With these symmetries, we also comment on the mass hierarchy between the top and bottom quarks.

String compactification, QCD axion and axion-photon-photon coupling

It is pointed out that there exist a few problems to be overcome toward an observable sub-eV QCD axion in superstring compactification. We give a general expression for the axion decay constant. For a large domain wall number $N_{DW}$, the axion decay constant can be substantially lowered from a generic value of a scalar singlet VEV. The Yukawa coupling structure in the recent $Z_{12-I}$ model is studied completely, including the needed nonrenormalizable terms toward realistic quark and lepton masses. In this model we find an approximate global symmetry and vacuum so that a QCD axion results but its decay constant is at the GUT scale. The axion-photon-photon coupling is calculated for a realistic vacuum satisfying the quark and lepton mass matrix conditions. It is the first time calculation of $c_{aγγ}$ in realistic string compactifications: $c_{aγγ}={5/3}-1.93\simeq -0.26$.

Superstring standard model from Z_{12-I} orbifold compactification with and without exotics, and effective R-parity

We construct a supersymmetric standard model in the context of the $Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification of the heterotic string theory. The gauge group is $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)^4\times[SO(10)\times U(1)^3]'$. We obtain three chiral families, $3\times\{Q,d^c,u^c,L,e^c,ν^c\}$, and Higgs doublets. There are numerous neutral singlets many of which can have VEVs so that low energy phenomenology on Yukawa couplings can be satisfied. In one assignment (Model E) of the electroweak hypercharge, we obtain the string scale value of $sin^2θ_W^0={3/8}$ and another exactly massless {\it exphoton} (in addition to the photon) coupling to exotic particles only. There are color triplet and anti-triplet exotics, $α$ and $\barα$, $SU(2)_L$ doublet exotics, $δ$ and $\barδ$, and $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L$ singlet but $Y={2/3},-{1/3},-{2/3},{1/3}$ exotics, $ξ,η,\barξ, \barη$. We show that all these vector-like exotics achieve heavy masses by appropriate VEVs of neutral singlets. One can find an effective R-parity between light (electroweak scale) particles so that proton and the LSP can live sufficiently long. In another assignment (Model S) of the electroweak hypercharge, there does not appear any exotic particle but $sin^2θ_W^0={3/14}$.

Axions: Past, Present, and Future

The current status of axion physics is presented. There still exists the axion window 10^9 GeV < F_a < 10^{12} GeV. The recent CAST solar axion search experiment on the axion-photon-photon coupling strength has to be improved by a factor of 100 to reach down to the region of superstring axions. The calculable theta and m_u=0 cases for strong CP solutions, and axino cosmology in SUSY extension of axion are also commented.

Gauge Unification via Stable Brane Recombination

We study the transition between parallel and intersecting branes on a torus. Spontaneous symmetry breaking of nonabelian gauge symmetry is understood as brane separation, and a more general intermediate deformation is discussed. We argue that there exists supersymmetry preserving transition and we can always have parallel branes as a final state. The transition is interpreted due to dynamics of the F- and D-string junctions and their generalization to (F, D$p$) bound states. The gauge group and coupling unification is achieved, also as a result of supersymmetry. From the tadpole cancelation condition, we naturally have some class of intersecting brane models as broken phases of Type I theory with SO(32) gauge group.

Brane gravity, massless bulk scalar and self-tuning of the cosmological constant

We show that a self-tuning mechanism of the cosmological constant could work in 5D non-compact space-time with a $Z_2$ symmetry in the presence of a massless scalar field. The standard model matter fields live only on the 4D brane. The change of vacuum energy on the brane (brane cosmological constant) by, for instance, electroweak and QCD phase transitions, just gives rise to dynamical shifts of the profiles of the background metric and the scalar field in the extra dimension, keeping 4D space-time flat without any fine-tuning. To avoid naked singularities in the bulk, the brane cosmological constant should be negative. We introduce an additional brane-localized 4D Einstein-Hilbert term so as to provide the observed 4D gravity with the non-compact extra dimension. With a general form of brane-localized gravity term allowed by the symmetries, the low energy Einstein gravity is successfully reproduced on the brane at long distances. We show this phenomenon explicitly for the case of vanishing bulk cosmological constant.

Towards 5D Grand Unification without SUSY Flavor Problem

We consider the renormalization group approach to the SUSY flavor problem in the supersymmetric SU(5) model with one extra dimension. In higher dimensional SUSY gauge theories, it has been recently shown that power corrections due to the Kaluza-Klein states of gauge fields run the soft masses generated at the orbifold fixed point to flavor conserving values in the infra-red limit. In models with GUT breaking at the brane where the GUT scale can be larger than the compactification scale, we show that the addition of a bulk Higgs multiplet, which is necessary for the successful unification, is compatible with the flavor universality achieved at the compactification scale.

A Quintessential Axion

The model independent axion of string theory has a decay constant of order of the Planck scale. We explore the properties of this quintessence candidate (quintaxion) in the scheme of hidden sector supergravity breakdown. In models allowing for a reasonable $μ$ term, the hidden sector dynamics may lead to an almost flat potential responsible for the vacuum energy of $(0.003 {\rm eV})^4$. A solution to the strong CP-problem is provided by an additional hidden sector pseudoscalar (QCD axion) with properties that make it an acceptable candidate for cold dark matter of the universe.

TeV scale 5D $SU(3)_W$ unification and the fixed point anomaly cancellation with chiral split multiplets

A possibility of 5D gauge unification of $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ in $SU(3)_W$ is examined. The orbifold compactification allows fixed points where $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ representations can be assigned. We present a few possibilities which give long proton lifetime, top-bottom mass hierarchy from geometry, and reasonable neutrino masses. In general, these {\it chiral models} can lead to fixed point anomalies. We can show easily, due to the simplicity of the model, that these anomalies are cancelled by the relevant Chern-Simons terms for all the models we consider. It is also shown that the fixed point U(1)--graviton--graviton anomaly cancels without the help from the Chern-Simons term. Hence, we conjecture that the fixed point anomalies can be cancelled if the effective 4D theory is made anomaly free by locating chiral fermions at the fixed points.

Top-bottom mass hierarchy, $s-μ$ puzzle and gauge coupling unification with split multiplets

A supersymmetric 5D SU(5) grand unification is considered. The SU(5) is broken down to $G_{SM}=SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ by the $Z_2\times Z_2'$ assignment of the bulk field(s). The matter fields are located at the fixed point(s). In the bulk, a Higgs multiplet $\bar 5_H$(containing the bottom doublet $H_1$) and the SU(5) gauge multiplet are located. At one fixed point, $H_2$(the top doublet) and the standard model matter multiplets are presented. Because of the difference of the locations of $H_1$ and $H_2$, one can obtain a hierarchy between top and bottom Yukawa couplings. We also present a possibility to understand the $s-μ$ mass puzzle in this framework of the split multiplet.

Axinos as Dark Matter

Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model that incorporate the axion solution to the strong CP problem necessarily contain also the axino, the fermionic partner of the axion. In contrast to the neutralino and the gravitino, the axino mass is generically not of the order of the supersymmetry-breaking scale and can be much smaller. The axino is therefore an intriguing candidate for a stable superpartner. In a previous Letter [1] it was shown that axinos are a natural candidate for cold dark matter in the Universe when they are generated non-thermally through out-of-equilibrium neutralino decays. Here, we extend the study of non-thermal production and include a competing thermal production mechanism through scatterings and decays of particles in the plasma. We identify axino masses in the range of tens of MeV to several GeV (depending on the scenario) as corresponding to cold axino relics if the reheating temperature $\treh$ is less than about $5\times10^4\gev$. At higher $\treh$ and lower mass, axinos could constitute warm dark matter. In the scenario with axinos as relics, the gravitino problem finds a natural solution. The lightest superpartner of the Standard Model spectrum remains effectively stable in high-energy detectors but may be either neutral or charged. The usual highly restrictive constraint $\abundchi\lsim1$ on the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino becomes void.

Wave function of the radion in the brane background with a massless scalar field and a self-tuning problem

We consider flat solutions in the brane background with a massless scalar field appearing in 5D $H^2_{MNPQ}$. Since there exist bulk singularities or arises the divergent 4D Planck mass, we should introduce a compact extra dimension, the size of which is then fixed by brane tension(s) and a bulk cosmological constant. Inspecting scalar perturbations around the flat solutions, we find that the flat solutions are stable vacua from the positive mass spectrum of radion. We show that the massless radion mode is projected out by the boundary condition arising in cutting off the extra dimension. Thus, the fixed extra dimension is not alterable, which is not useful toward a self-tuning of the cosmological constant.

Model-dependent Axion as Quintessence with Almost Massless Hidden Sector Quarks

A pseudo-Goldstone boson for {\it quintessence} is known to require the decay constant $F_q\sim M_P$ and the height of the potential $(0.003 {\rm eV})^4$, and hence the pseudo-Goldstone boson mass of order $10^{-33}$ eV. The model-dependent axion in some superstring models is suggested as a good candidate for the quintessence. We realize this idea with a hidden-sector gauge group $SU(3)_H\times U(1)_H$. The hidden-sector instanton contribution to the quintessence potential is suppressed by the almost massless hidden-sector quarks. The model-independent axion is the QCD axion required for the strong CP solution.

Axion and Almost Massless Quark as Ingredients of Quintessence

It is pointed out that a natural introduction of quintessence is an axion with an almost massless quark. With an appropriate gauge or discrete symmetry, one can obtain the quintessence potential height of order $(0.003 eV)^4$. Even though the QCD axion with almost massless up quark is a possibility, we stress the almost massless quark in the hidden sector together with the QCD axion toward the quintessence.

Bounds and Implications of Neutrino Magnetic Moments from Atmospheric Neutrino Data

The neutral current effects of the future high statistics atmospheric neutrino data can be used to distinguish the mechanisms between a $ν_μ$ oscillation to a tau neutrino or to a sterile neutrino. However, if neutrinos possess large diagonal and/or transition magnetic moments, the neutrino magnetic moments can contribute to the neutral current effects which can be studied by the single $π^0$ production events in the Super-K data. This effect should be included in the future analyses of atmospheric data in the determination of $ν_μ$ to tau or sterile neutrino oscillation.

The Axino-Gravitino Cosmology

A cosmological scenario of a light axino and a lighter gravitino is presented. The most important consequence is that it can mimick the mixed dark matter (MDM) model of the large scale structure formation. The presence of axino and gravitino is inevitable in supergravity extension of the invisible axion solution of the strong CP problem. The possibility of a light gravitino is popular in the recent efforts of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking.

A simple modification of the maximal mixing scenario for three light neutrinos

We suggest a simple modification of the maximal mixing scenario (with $S_3$ permutation symmetry) for three light neutrinos. Our neutrino mass matrix has smaller permutation symmetry $S_{2}$ ($ν_μ \leftrightarrow ν_{e}$), and is consistent with all neutrino experiments except the $^{37}$Cl experiment. The resulting mass eigenvalues for three neutrinos are $m_{1} \approx (2.55-1.27) \times 10^{-3} eV, m_{2,3} \approx (0.71-1.43) eV$ for $Δm_{LSND}^{2} = 0.5 - 2.0 eV^2$. Then these light neutrinos can account for $\sim (2.4-4.8)% (6.2-12.4 %)$ of the dark matter for $h = 0.8 (0.5)$. Our model predicts the $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation probability in the range sensitive to the future experiments such as CHORUS and NOMAD.

Axion Cosmology with a Stronger QCD in the Early Universe

We examine in the context of supersymmetric models whether the usual cosmological upper bound on the axion decay constant can be relaxed by assuming a period of stronger QCD in the early universe. By evaluating the axion potential in the early universe and also taking into account the dilaton potential energy, it is argued that a stronger QCD is not useful for raising up the bound.

Dark Matter and Structure Formation with Late Decaying Particles

Since it became evident that the CDM model for cosmic structure formation predicts smaller power on large scales than observed, many alternatives have been suggested. Among them, the existence of late decaying particle can cure it by delaying the beginning of the matter domination and increasing the horizon length at that time. We discuss the realization of this scenario and present the light neutrino and the light axino as possible examples of working particle physics model. We point out that the increased power at sub-galaxy scale predicted by this scenario could lead to rich sub-galaxy structures.

Fermion Doubling and a Natural Solution of the Strong CP Problem

We suggest the fermion doubling for all quarks and leptons. It is a generalization of the neutrino doubling of the seesaw mechanism. The new quarks and leptons are $SU(2)$ singlets and carry the electromagnetic charges of their lighter counterparts. An $SU(3)$ {\it anomaly free global symmetry} or a discrete symmetry can be introduced to restrict the Yukawa couplings. The form of mass matrix is belonging to that of Nelson and Barr even though our model does not belong to Barr's criterion. The weak CP violation of the Kobayashi-Maskawa form is obtained through the spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry at high energy scale. The strong CP solution is through a specific form of the mass matrix. At low energy, the particle content is the same as in the standard model. For a model with a global symmetry, in addition there exists a massless majoron.
