A Model of Vector-like Leptons for the Muon $g-2$ and the $W$ Boson Mass

We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a vector-like lepton and a local $U(1)'$ symmetry, motivated by the recent experimental anomalies in the muon $g-2$ and the $W$ boson mass. The $U(1)'$ symmetry is spontaneously broken by the VEVs of the dark Higgs scalar and the second Higgs doublet, giving rise to the mixing between the muon and the vector-like lepton. As a result, we obtain the desirable corrections to the muon $g-2$ and the $W$ boson mass simultaneously, dominantly due to the $Z'$ gauge interactions for the vector-like lepton and the second Higgs doublet, respectively. We also discuss the consistency of the model with the $Z$ boson decay width, the Higgs couplings and the dilepton bounds.

Models for Self-resonant Dark Matter

We consider a new mechanism for enhancing the self-scattering and annihilation cross sections for dark matter with multiple components but without a light mediator. The lighter dark matter component plays a role of the $u$-channel pole in the elastic co-scattering for dark matter, leading to a large self-scattering cross section and a Sommerfeld enhancement for semi-annihilation processes. Taking the effective theory approach for self-resonant dark matter, we present various combinations of multiple dark matter components with spins and parities, showing a $u$-channel pole in the co-scattering processes. Adopting dark photon and dark Higgs portals for self-resonant dark matter, we impose the relic density condition as well as indirect detection bounds on semi-annihilation channels with a Sommerfeld enhancement and discuss potential signals for direct detection experiments.

Reheating and Dark Matter Freeze-in in the Higgs-$R^2$ Inflation Model

We study the post-inflationary dynamics for reheating and freeze-in dark matter in the Higgs-$R^2$ inflation model. Taking the perturbative approach for reheating, we determine the evolution of the temperature for radiation bath produced during reheating and determine the maximum and reheating temperatures of the Universe. Adopting a singlet scalar dark matter with a conformal non-minimal coupling and a vanishing Higgs-portal coupling, we discuss the freeze-in production of dark matter both from the non-thermal scattering during reheating and the thermal scattering after reheating. We find that thermal scattering is dominant for dark matter production in our model due to the high reheating temperature. The reheating temperature in our model is determined dominantly by the Higgs condensate to be up to about $10^{14}\,{\rm GeV}$ and dark matter with masses up to about $10^9\,{\rm GeV}$ can be produced with a correct relic density.

The $SU(2)_D$ lepton portals for muon $g-2$, $W$ boson mass and dark matter

We propose a novel model which extends the Standard Model (SM) by introducing a $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry. In this model, a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet can contribute to the muon $g-2$ anomaly and the $W$ boson mass, remaining in tune with the recent experimental results. At the same time, the isospin charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ becomes a plausible candidate for Dark Matter(DM). We find that the resulting parameter space can fit the muon $g-2$, the $W$ boson mass and the DM constraints simultaneously.

The $SU(2)_D$ lepton portals for muon $g-2$, $W$ boson mass and dark matter

We propose a novel model for lepton flavor and dark matter based on the $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry and vector-like leptons in its fundamental representations. We introduce a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet for the mass mixing between the vector-like lepton and the lepton. As a result, the seesaw lepton masses are generated and there are sizable one-loop contributions to the muon $g-2$ via the $SU(2)_D$ gauge bosons and the relatively heavy vector-like lepton, as indicated in Fermilab E989. The tree-level mass mixing between the $Z$ boson and the isospin neutral gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ in our model accounts for the shift in the $W$ boson mass, being consistent with Tevatron CDFII. Finally, we show that the isospin charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ becomes a plausible candidate for dark matter with a small mass splitting tied up to the modified $W$ boson mass, and there is a viable parameter space where the favored corrections to the muon $g-2$ and the $W$ boson mass and the dark matter constraints are simultaneously fulfilled.

Beyond the Starobinsky model for inflation

We single out the Starobinsky model and its extensions among generic $f(R)$ gravity as attractors at large field values for chaotic inflation. Treating a $R^3$ curvature term as a perturbation of the Starobinsky model, we impose the phenomenological bounds on the additional term satisfying the successful inflationary predictions. We find that the scalar spectral index can vary in both the red or blue tilted direction, depending on the sign of the coefficient of the $R^3$ term, whereas the tensor-to-scalar ratio is less affected in the Planck-compatible region. We also discuss the role of higher order curvature term for stability and the reheating dynamics for the unambiguous prediction for the number of efoldings up to the $R^3$ term.

Chaotic inflation with four-form couplings

We consider chaotic inflation models with a pseudo-scalar field containing the general couplings to the four-form flux. The four-form mixing with the pseudo-scalar field induces a quadratic potential for inflaton while the coexisting four-form mixing with graviton generates a non-minimal gravity coupling for inflaton. The shift symmetry is respected by the derived inflaton couplings and it is broken spontaneously only by the fixed four-form flux. We discuss the success of inflationary predictions and robustness against higher order terms. Finally, the built-in reheating mechanism is also addressed.

Connecting between inflation and dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry

We investigate the possibility of unifying the inflation and dark matter physics in the minimal model for a complex scalar dark matter with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. The dark local $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously into the $Z_3$ symmetry by the dark Higgs mechanism. As compared to dark matter models with $Z_2$ parity, the dark matter cubic self-interaction restricts the inflation with non-minimal couplings to take place beyond the pure dark matter direction and plays an important role in the loop corrections for the inflationary predictions as well as determining the correct dark matter relic density. Considering either of $2\rightarrow 2$, $3\rightarrow 2$ or forbidden channels to be a dominant production mechanism for dark matter, we show the viable parameter space of the model that is consistent with the theoretical and phenomenological constraints combined from inflation and dark matter.

Estimation of Infection Rate and Prediction of Initial Infected Individuals of COVID-19

We consider the pandemic spreading of COVID-19 for some selected countries after the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan City, China. We estimated the infection rate and the initial infected individuals of COVID-19 by using the officially reported data at the early stage of the epidemic for the susceptible (S), infectable (I), quarantined (Q), and the cofirmed recovered (Rk) population model, so called SIQRk model. In the reported data we know the quarantined cases and the recovered cases. We can not know the recovered cases from the asymptomatic cases. In the SIQRk model we can estimated the model parameters and the initial infecting cases (confirmed ans asymtomatic cases) from the data fits. We obtained the infection rate in the range between 0.233 and 0.462, the basic reproduction number Ro in the range between 1.8 and 3.5, and the initial number of infected individuals in the range betwee 10 and 8409 for some selected countries. By using fitting parameters we estimated the maximum time of the infection for Germany when the government are performing the quarantine policy. The disease is undergoing to the calm state about six months after first patients were identified.

Exothermic Dark Matter for XENON1T Excess

Motivated by the recent excess in the electron recoil from XENON1T experiment, we consider the possibility of exothermic dark matter, which is composed of two states with mass splitting. The heavier state down-scatters off the electron into the lighter state, making an appropriate recoil energy required for the Xenon excess even for the standard Maxwellian velocity distribution of dark matter. Accordingly, we determine the mass difference between two component states of dark matter to the peak electron recoil energy at about $2.5\,{\rm keV}$ up to the detector resolution, accounting for the recoil events over $E_R=2-3\,{\rm keV}$, which are most significant. We include the effects of the phase-space enhancement and the atomic excitation factor to calculate the required scattering cross section for the Xenon excess. We discuss the implications of dark matter interactions in the effective theory for exothermic dark matter and a massive $Z'$ mediator and provide microscopic models realizing the required dark matter and electron couplings to $Z'$.

Lightening Gravity-Mediated Dark Matter

We revisit the scenario of a massive spin-2 particle as the mediator for communicating between dark matter of arbitrary spin and the Standard Model. Taking the general couplings of the spin-2 particle in the effective theory, we discuss the thermal production mechanisms for dark matter with various channels and the dark matter self-scattering. For WIMP and light dark matter cases, we impose the relic density condition and various experimental constraints from direct and indirect detections, precision measurements as well as collider experiments. We show that it is important to include the annihilation of dark matter into a pair of spin-2 particles in both allowed and forbidden regimes, thus opening up the consistent parameter space for dark matter. The benchmark models of the spin-2 mediator are presented in the context of the warped extra dimension and compared to the simplified models.

The Clockwork Standard Model

We consider various bulk fields with general dilaton couplings in the linear dilaton background in five dimensions as the continuum limit of clockwork models. We show that the localization of the zero modes of bulk fields and the mass gap in the KK spectrum depend not only on the bulk dilaton coupling, but also on the bulk mass parameter in the case of a bulk fermion. The consistency from universality and perturbativity of gauge couplings constrain the dilaton couplings to the brane-localized matter fields as well as the bulk gauge bosons. Constructing the Clockwork Standard Model (SM) in the linear dilaton background, we provide the necessary conditions for the bulk mass parameters for explaining the mass hierarchy and mixing for the SM fermions. We can introduce a sizable expansion parameter $\varepsilon=e^{-\frac{2}{3} kz_c}$ for the realistic flavor structure in the quark sector without a fine-tuning in the bulk mass parameters, but at the expense of a large 5D Planck scale. On the other hand, we can use a smaller expansion parameter for lepton masses, in favor of the solution to the hierarchy problem of the Higgs mass parameter. We found that massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons and massive KK gravitons couple more strongly to light and heavy fermions, respectively, so there is a complementarity in the resonance researches for those KK modes at the LHC.

The Selfish Higgs and Reheating

We consider the cosmological relaxation of the Higgs mass and the cosmological constant due to the four-form fluxes in four dimensions. We present a general class of models with a singlet scalar field containing four-form couplings where the Higgs mass is relaxed to a right value and the Universe reheats to a sufficiently high reheating temperature after the last membrane nucleation. We also discuss some of interesting features in the cases of singlet scalar fields with non-minimal or minimal couplings to gravity and show how the new scalar fields can play a role for dark matter production.

preprint2019arXiv

Relaxation of Higgs mass and cosmological constant with four-form fluxes and reheating

We consider the most general effective action for the four-form fluxes in the Standard Model coupled to gravity. The Higgs mass parameter can be relaxed to a correct value due to the four-form coupling to the Higgs field and it stops changing due to an extremely suppressed transition probability from the observed cosmological constant to AdS space. We first introduce a non-minimal four-form coupling to gravity and discuss the role of a new scalar field as the inflaton and the conditions for a successful reheating at the end of relaxation.

Diphoton resonance confronts dark matter

As an interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excesses recently reported by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we consider a simple extension of the Standard Model with a Dirac fermion dark matter where a singlet complex scalar field mediates between dark matter and SM particles via effective couplings to SM gauge bosons and/or Higgs-portal. In this model, we can accommodate the diphoton events through the direct and/or cascade decays of pseudo-scalar and real scalar partners of the complex scalar field. We show that mono-jet searches and gamma-ray observations are complementary in constraining the region where the width of the diphoton resonance can be enhanced due to the couplings of the resonance to dark matter and the correct relic density is obtained. In the case of cascade decay of the resonance, the effective couplings of singlet scalars can be smaller, but the model is still testable by the future discrimination between single photon and photon-jet at the LHC as well as the gamma-ray searches for the cascade annihilation of dark matter.

Gamma-ray boxes from axion-mediated dark matter

We compute the gamma-ray output of axion-mediated dark matter and derive the corresponding constraints set by recent data. In such scenarios the dark matter candidate is a Dirac fermion that pair-annihilates into axions and/or scalars. Provided that the axion decays (at least partly) into photons, these models naturally give rise to a box-shaped gamma-ray spectrum that may present two distinct phenomenological behaviours: a narrow box, resembling a line at half the dark matter mass, or a wide box, spanning an extensive energy range up to the dark matter mass. Remarkably, we find that in both cases a sizable gamma-ray flux is predicted for a thermal relic without fine-tuning the model parameters nor invoking boost factors. This large output is in line with recent Fermi-LAT observations towards the Galactic centre region and is on the verge of being excluded. We then make use of the Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. data to derive robust, model-independent upper limits on the dark matter annihilation cross section for the narrow and wide box scenarios. H.E.S.S. constraints, in particular, turn out to match the ones from Fermi-LAT at hundreds of GeV and extend to multi-TeV masses. Future Cherenkov telescopes will likely probe gamma-ray boxes from thermal dark matter relics in the whole multi-TeV range, a region hardly accessible to direct detection, collider searches and other indirect detection strategies.

Inflection point inflation and reheating

We revisit the inflection point inflation with an extended discussion to large field values and consider the reheating effects on the inflationary predictions. Parametrizing the reheating dynamics in terms of the reheating temperature and the equation of state during inflation, we show how the observationally favored parameter space of inflection point inflation is affected by reheating dynamics. Consequently, we apply the general results to the inflation models with non-minimal coupling, such as the SM Higgs inflation and the $B-L$ Higgs inflation.

Reheating the Universe at Criticality

We present the general discussion on the inflection point inflation with small or large inflaton fields and show the effects of reheating dynamics on the inflationary predictions. In order to compare the model predictions with precisely measured CMB anisotropies and constrain the inflation models, the knowledge of the reheating dynamics is required. Inflection point inflation extended to the trans-Planckian regime can accommodate a sizable tensor-to-scalar ratio at the detectable level in the future CMB experiments.

Resonant SIMP dark matter

We consider a resonant SIMP dark matter in models with two singlet complex scalar fields charged under a local dark $U(1)_D$. After the $U(1)_D$ is broken down to a $Z_5$ discrete subgroup, the lighter scalar field becomes a SIMP dark matter which has the enhanced $3\rightarrow 2$ annihilation cross section near the resonance of the heavier scalar field. Bounds on the SIMP self-scattering cross section and the relic density can be fulfilled at the same time for perturbative couplings of SIMP. A small gauge kinetic mixing between the SM hypercharge and dark gauge bosons can be used to make SIMP dark matter in kinetic equilibrium with the SM during freeze-out.

The diphoton resonance as a gravity mediator of dark matter

We consider the possibility of interpreting the recently reported diphoton excess at 750 GeV as a spin-two massive particle (such as a Kaluza-Klein graviton in warped extra-dimensions) which serves as a mediator to Dark Matter via its gravitational couplings to the dark sector and to the Standard Model (SM). We model non-universal couplings of the resonance to gauge bosons in the SM and to Dark Matter as a function on their localization in the extra dimension. We find that scalar, fermion or vector dark matter can saturate the dark matter relic density by the annihilation of dark matter into a pair of the SM particles or heavy resonances, in agreement with the diphoton resonance signal strength. We check the compatibility of our hypothesis with other searches for the KK graviton. We show that the invisible decay rate of the resonance into a pair of dark matter is subdominant in the region of the correct relic density, hence leading to no constraints from the mono-jet bound at 8 TeV via the gluon coupling. We also discuss the kinematic features of the decay products of a KK graviton to distinguish the KK graviton from the SM backgrounds or a scalar particle interpretation of the diphoton resonance.

Communication with SIMP dark mesons via Z'-portal

We consider a consistent extension of the SIMP models with dark mesons by including a dark U(1)_D gauge symmetry. Dark matter density is determined by a thermal freeze-out of the $3\to2$ self-annihilation process, thanks to the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In the presence of a gauge kinetic mixing between the dark photon and the SM hypercharge gauge boson, dark mesons can undergo a sufficient scattering off the Standard Model particles and keep in kinetic equilibrium until freeze-out in this SIMP scenario. Taking the SU(N_f)xSU(N_f)/SU(N_f) flavor symmetry under the SU(N_c) confining group, we show how much complementary the SIMP constraints on the parameters of the dark photon are for current experimental searches for dark photon.

Diboson Excesses Demystified in Effective Field Theory Approach

We study the collider implication of a neutral resonance which decays to several diboson final states such as $W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, and $Zγ$ via a minimal set of effective operators. We consider both CP-even and CP-odd bosonic states with spin 0, 1, or 2. The production cross sections for the bosonic resonance states are obtained with the effective operators involving gluons (and quarks), and the branching fractions are obtained with the operators responsible for the interactions with electroweak gauge bosons. We demonstrate that each scenario allows for a broad parameter space which could accommodate the recently-reported intriguing excesses in the ATLAS diboson final states, and discuss how the CP states and spin information of the resonance can be extracted at the LHC run II.

SIMP dark matter with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry

We consider a complex scalar field as SIMP dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ discrete symmetry appearing as a remnant of dark local $U(1)$. Dark matter (DM) annihilates dominantly by the 3-to-2 scattering, due to the DM cubic coupling in combination with the DM quartic coupling or the $Z'$ gauge and dark Higgs couplings. We show that a light $Z'$ gauge boson makes DM in kinetic equilibrium with thermal plasma at freeze-out and it affects the DM relic density and perturbativity/unitarity constraints for DM self-interactions. We show that the large DM self-interactions are consistent with solving small-scale structure problems and explaining the DM halo separation recently observed in Abell 3827 cluster. Various bounds on the model from the SIMP conditions, DM self-interactions, $Z'$ searches, DM direct/indirect detection experiments, and Higgs signals, are also discussed.

Supersymmetric Higgs-portal and X-ray lines

We consider a Dirac singlet fermion as thermal dark matter for explaining the X-ray line in the context of a supersymmetric Higgs-portal model or a generalized Dirac NMSSM. The Dirac singlet fermion gets a mass splitting due to their Yukawa couplings to two Higgs doublets and their superpartners, Higgsinos, after electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that a correct relic density can be obtained from thermal freeze-out, due to the co-annihilation with Higgsinos for the same Yukawa couplings. We discuss the phenomenology of the Higgsinos in this model such as displaced vertices at the LHC.

Chaotic inflation and unitarity problem

We consider a general chaotic inflation model with non-canonical kinetic term, resulting in attractor solutions for the inflation of quadratic or other monomial type. In particular, the form of the kinetic term and the potential is fixed due to the requirement that the inflation model is a quadratic form in the large field values of the inflaton. We show that a large coupling in the non-canonical kinetic term allows for the slow-roll inflation with sub-Planckian field values of the inflaton and the successful predictions of the quadratic or other monomial type chaotic inflation in light of BICEP2 results are maintained in our model. We find that due to the large rescaling of the inflaton field in the vacuum, there is no unitarity problem below the Planck scale.

Cluster X-ray line at $3.5\,{\rm keV}$ from axion-like dark matter

The recently reported X-ray line signal at $E_γ\simeq 3.5\, {\rm keV}$ from a stacked spectrum of various galaxy clusters and the Andromeda galaxy may be originating from a decaying dark matter particle of the mass $2 E_γ$. A light axion-like scalar is suggested as a natural candidate for dark matter and its production mechanisms are closely examined. We show that the right amount of axion relic density with the preferred parameters, $m_a \simeq 7 \,{\rm keV}$ and $f_a \simeq 4\times 10^{14}\, {\rm GeV}$, can be naturally obtainable from the decay of inflaton. If the axions were produced from the saxion decay, it could not have constituted the total relic density due to the bound from structure formation. Nonetheless, the saxion decay is an interesting possibility, because the $3.5\, {\rm keV}$ line and dark radiation can be addressed simultaneously, being consistent with the Planck data. Small misalignment angles of the axion, ranging between $θ_a\sim 10^{-4} -10^{-1}$ depending on the reheating temperature, can also be the source of axion production. The model with axion misalignment can satisfy the constraints for structure formation and iso-curvature perturbation.

Coleman-Weinberg Inflation in light of Planck

We revisit a single field inflationary model based on Coleman-Weinberg potentials. We show that in small field Coleman-Weinberg inflation, the observed amplitude of perturbations needs an extremely small quartic coupling of the inflaton, which might be a signature of radiative origin. However, the spectral index obtained in a standard cosmological scenario turns out to be outside the 2 sigma region of the Planck data. When a non-standard cosmological framework is invoked, such as brane-world cosmology in the Randall-Sundrum model, the spectral index can be made consistent with Planck data within 1 sigma, courtesy of the modification in the evolution of the Hubble parameter in such a scheme. We also show that the required inflaton quartic coupling as well as a phenomenologically viable B-L symmetry breaking together with a natural electroweak symmetry breaking can arise dynamically in a generalized B-L extension of the Standard Model where the full potential is assumed to vanish at a high scale.

Gravity-mediated (or Composite) Dark Matter

Dark matter could have an electroweak origin, yet communicate with the visible sector exclusively through gravitational interactions. In a set-up addressing the hierarchy problem, we propose a new dark matter scenario where gravitational mediators, arising from the compactification of extra-dimensions, are responsible for dark matter interactions and its relic abundance in the Universe. We write an explicit example of this mechanism in warped extra-dimensions and work out its constraints. We also develop a dual picture of the model, based on a four-dimensional scenario with partial compositeness. We show that Gravity-mediated Dark Matter is equivalent to a mechanism of generating viable dark matter scenarios in a strongly-coupled, near-conformal theory, such as in composite Higgs models.

Gravity-mediated (or Composite) Dark Matter Confronts Astrophysical Data

We consider the astrophysical bounds on a new form of dark matter, the so called Gravity-mediated Dark Matter. In this scenario, dark matter communicates with us through a mediator sector composed of gravitational resonances, namely a new scalar (radion) and a massive spin-two resonance (massive graviton). We consider specific models motivated by natural electroweak symmetry breaking or weak-scale dark matter in the context of models in warped extra-dimensions and their composite duals. The main Dark Matter annihilation mechanism is due to the interactions of KK gravitons to gauge bosons that propagate in bulk. We impose the bounds on monochromatic or continuum photons from Fermi-LAT and HESS. We also explore scenarios in which the Fermi gamma-ray line could be a manifestation of Gravity-mediated Dark Matter.

Magnetic dark matter for the X-ray line at 3.55 keV

We consider a decaying magnetic dark matter explaining the X-ray line at 3.55 keV shown recently from XMM-Newton observations. We introduce two singlet Majorana fermions that have almost degenerate masses and fermion-portal couplings with a charged scalar of weak scale mass. In our model, an approximate Z_2 symmetry gives rise to a tiny transition magnetic moment between the Majorana fermions at one loop. The heavier Majorana fermion becomes a thermal dark matter due to the sizable fermion-portal coupling to the SM charged fermions. We find the parameter space for the masses of dark matter and charged scalar and their couplings, being consistent with both the relic density and the X-ray line. Various phenomenological constraints on the model are also discussed.

Starobinsky-like inflation from induced gravity

We derive a general criterion that defines all single-field models leading to Starobinsky-like inflation and to universal predictions for the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio, which are in agreement with Planck data. Out of all the theories that satisfy this criterion, we single out a special class of models with the interesting property of retaining perturbative unitarity up to the Planck scale. These models are based on induced gravity, with the Planck mass determined by the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton.

Stop and Sbottom LSP with R-parity Violation

Considering a third-generation squark as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), we investigate R-parity violating collider signatures with bilinear LH or trilinear LQD operators that may contribute to observed neutrino masses and mixings. Reinterpreting the LHC 7+8 TeV results of SUSY and leptoquark searches, we find that third-generation squark LSPs decaying to first- or second-generation leptons are generally excluded up to at least about 660 GeV at 95%C.L.. One notable feature of many models is that sbottoms can decay to top quarks and charged leptons that lead to a broader invariant mass spectrum and weaker collider constraints. More dedicated searches with $b$-taggings or top reconstructions are thus encouraged. Finally, we discuss that the recently observed excesses in the CMS leptoquark search can be accommodated by the decay of sbottom LSPs in the LQD$_{113+131}$ model.

General self-tuning solutions and no-go theorem

We consider brane world models with one extra dimension. In the bulk there is in addition to gravity a three form gauge potential or equivalently a scalar (by generalisation of electric magnetic duality). We find classical solutions for which the 4d effective cosmological constant is adjusted by choice of integration constants. No go theorems for such self-tuning mechanism are circumvented by unorthodox Lagrangians for the three form respectively the scalar. It is argued that the corresponding effective 4d theory always includes tachyonic Kaluza-Klein excitations or ghosts. Known no go theorems are extended to a general class of models with unorthodox Lagrangians.

Interplay between Fermi gamma-ray lines and collider searches

We explore the interplay between lines in the gamma-ray spectrum and LHC searches involving missing energy and photons. As an example, we consider a singlet Dirac fermion dark matter with the mediator for Fermi gamma-ray line at 130 GeV. A new chiral or local U(1) symmetry makes weak-scale dark matter natural and provides the axion or Z' gauge boson as the mediator connecting between dark matter and electroweak gauge bosons. In these models, the mediator particle can be produced in association with a monophoton at colliders and it produces large missing energy through the decays into a DM pair or ZZ Z gamma with at least one Z decaying into a neutrino pair. We adopt the monophoton searches with large missing energy at the LHC and impose the bounds on the coupling and mass of the mediator field in the models. We show that the parameter space of the Z' mediation model is already strongly constrained by the LHC 8 TeV data, whereas a certain region of the parameter space away from the resonance in axion-like mediator models are bounded. We foresee the monophoton bounds on the Z' and axion mediation models at the LHC 14 TeV.

Radiative generation of the Higgs potential

We consider the minimal extension of the Standard Model with a generalized B-L gauge symmetry U(1)_X for generating the Higgs potential radiatively. Assuming that the full scalar potential vanishes at the vacuum instability scale, we achieve the goal in terms of two free parameters, the X gauge coupling and the right-handed neutrino Yukawa coupling. The X gauge symmetry is broken spontaneously by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism while the scale symmetry breakdown induces electroweak symmetry breaking through the radiative generation of appropriate scalar quartic couplings. We show that there is a reasonable parameter space that is consistent with a correct electroweak symmetry breaking and the observed Higgs mass.

Running inflation with unitary Higgs

We consider the renormalization group(RG) improved inflaton potential in unitarized Higgs inflation where the original Higgs inflation is unitarized by the addition of a real singlet scalar of sigma-model type. The sigma field coupling to the Higgs, which is introduced to reproduce a large non-minimal coupling of the Higgs below the sigma scalar threshold, also improves the Standard Model vacuum stability due to the RG running. Furthermore, the same sigma field coupling determines the reheating temperature or the number of efoldings. Considering the uncertainties in the number of efoldings in the model, we show that the loop-corrected spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio are consistent with nine-year WMAP and new Planck data within 1sigma.

Vacuum Stability, Perturbativity, EWPD and Higgs-to-diphoton in Type II Seesaw

We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than about 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show how much it can deviate from the Standard Model prediction for specific parameter points.

Vector Higgs-portal dark matter and Fermi-LAT gamma ray line

We propose a renormalizable model for vector dark matter with extra U(1) gauge symmetry, which is broken by the VEV of a complex singlet scalar. When the singlet scalar has a quartic coupling to a heavy charged scalar, the resonance effect enhances the annihilation cross section of vector dark matter into two photons such that Fermi-gamma ray line at about 130 GeV is obtained. In the presence of a tiny mixing between the singlet scalar and the Standard Model Higgs doublet, the relic density is determined dominantly by WW/ZZ and two-photon channels near the resonance pole of the singlet scalar. We also show that various phenomenological bounds coming from the Higgs to diphoton decay rate, precision data and collider searches for the charged scalar and vacuum stability are satisfied in the model.

Axion-mediated dark matter and Higgs diphoton signal

We consider axion-mediated dark matter models motivated by Fermi gamma ray line at 130 GeV, where anomaly interactions of an axion-like scalar mediate a singlet Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) to electroweak gauge bosons. In these models, extra vector-like leptons generate anomaly interactions for the axion and can also couple to the SM Higgs boson to modify the Higgs-to-diphoton rate. We can distinguish models by the branching fraction of the DM annihilation into a photon pair, favoring the model with a triplet fermion. From the condition that the lighter charged extra lepton must be heavier than dark matter for no tree-level DM annihilations, we also show that the ratio of Higgs-to-diphoton rate to the SM value is constrained by vacuum stability to 1.4(1.5) for the cutoff scale of 10(1) TeV.

Fermi Gamma Ray Line at 130 GeV from Axion-Mediated Dark Matter

We consider a singlet Dirac fermion with Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry as dark matter. A singlet complex scalar is introduced to mediate between dark matter and the SM through Higgs portal interaction and electroweak PQ anomalies. We show that a resonant annihilation of dark matter with axion mediation can explain the monochromatic photon line of the Fermi LAT data at 130 GeV by anomaly interactions while the annihilation cross section with Higgs portal interaction is p-wave suppressed. We discuss the interplay between the direct detection of the fermion dark matter and the collider search of Higgs-like scalars. We also present a ultra-violet completion of the dark matter model into the NMSSM with PQ symmetry.

Hitting sbottom in natural SUSY

We compare the experimental prospects of direct stop and sbottom pair production searches at the LHC. Such searches for stops are of great interest as they directly probe for states that are motivated by the SUSY solution to the hierarchy problem of the Higgs mass parameter - leading to a "Natural" SUSY spectrum. Noting that sbottom searches are less experimentally challenging and scale up in reach directly with the improvement on b-tagging algorithms, we discuss the interplay of small TeV scale custodial symmetry violation with sbottom direct pair production searches as a path to obtaining strong sub-TeV constraints on stops in a natural SUSY scenario. We argue that if a weak scale natural SUSY spectrum does not exist within the reach of LHC, then hopes for such a spectrum for large regions of parameter space should sbottom out. Conversely, the same arguments make clear that a discovery of such a spectrum is likely to proceed in a sbottom up manner.

Inflation and dark matter in two Higgs doublet models

We consider the Higgs inflation in the extension of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets coupled to gravity non-minimally. In the presence of an approximate global U(1) symmetry in the Higgs sector, both radial and angular modes of neutral Higgs bosons drive inflation where large non-Gaussianity is possible from appropriate initial conditions on the angular mode. We also discuss the case with single-field inflation for which the U(1) symmetry is broken to a Z_2 subgroup. We show that inflationary constraints, perturbativity and stability conditions restrict the parameter space of the Higgs quartic couplings at low energy in both multi- and single-field cases. Focusing on the inert doublet models where Z_2 symmetry remains unbroken at low energy, we show that the extra neutral Higgs boson can be a dark matter candidate consistent with the inflationary constraints. The doublet dark matter is always heavy in multi-field inflation while it can be light due to the suppression of the co-annihilation in single-field inflation. The implication of the extra quartic couplings on the vacuum stability bound is also discussed in the light of the recent LHC limits on the Higgs mass.

Model dependence of the bremsstrahlung effects from the superluminal neutrino at OPERA

We revisit the bremsstrahlung process of a superluminal neutrino motivated by OPERA results. From a careful analysis of the plane wave solutions of the superluminal neutrino, we find that the squared matrix elements contain additional terms from Lorentz violation due to the modified spin sum for the neutrino. We point out that the coefficients of the decay rate and the energy loss rate significantly depend on the details of the model, although the results are parametrically similar to the ones obtained by Cohen and Glashow [1]. We illustrate this from the modified neutral current interaction of neutrino with Lorentz violation of the same order as in the modified dispersion relation.

Singlet Assisted Vacuum Stability and the Higgs to Diphoton Rate

Light, electrically charged vector-like `leptons' with order one Yukawa couplings can enhance the Higgs to diphoton decay rate, as is suggested by measurements of the signal strength μ_{γγ} by ATLAS and CMS. However, the large Yukawa interactions tend to drive the Higgs quartic coupling negative at a low scale Λ< 10 TeV, and as such new physics is required to stabilize the electroweak vacuum. A plausible option, which does not rely on supersymmetry, is that the Higgs in fact has a much larger tree level quartic coupling than in the Standard Model, which is possible with an extended scalar sector. We investigate in detail the minimal model with a new real singlet scalar which condenses and mixes with the Higgs. The mechanism is very efficient when the singlet is heavier than the weak scale m_s ~ O(TeV), in which case the vacuum can be stable and the couplings can be perturbative up to scales Λ~ 10^9 GeV while μ_{γγ} = 1.7. On the other hand, for a singlet at the weak scale, a substantial shift in the Higgs quartic coupling requires sizable Higgs-singlet mixing. Such mixing can be utilized to further enhance μ_{γγ} through Yukawa couplings of the singlet to the vector-like leptons. In this case, for an enhancement μ_{γγ} \sim 1.7 it is possible to obtain a stable vacuum up to scales Λ~ 1000 TeV. The singlet can have significant mixing with the Higgs particle, allowing for its resonant production via gluon fusion at the LHC, and can be searched for through Higgs like decays and decays to vector-like leptons, which can lead to multi-lepton final states. We also comment on UV extensions of the minimal model.

Stabilization of the Electroweak Vacuum by a Scalar Threshold Effect

We show how a heavy scalar singlet with a large vacuum expectation value can evade the potential instability of the Standard Model electroweak vacuum. The quartic interaction between the heavy scalar singlet and the Higgs doublet leads to a positive tree-level threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling, which is very effective in stabilizing the potential. We provide examples, such as the see-saw, invisible axion and unitarized Higgs inflation, where the proposed mechanism is automatically implemented in well-defined ranges of Higgs masses.

Vacuum Stability, Perturbativity, EWPD and Higgs-to-diphoton rate in Type II Seesaw Models

We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show a possible enhancement by up to 100 % and 50 % for the cut-off scale of 100 TeV and $10^{19}$ GeV, respectively, if the doubly charged Higgs boson mass is as low as 100 GeV.

Vector Higgs-portal dark matter and the invisible Higgs

The Higgs sector of the Standard Model offers a unique probe of the hidden sector. In this work, we explore the possibility of renormalizable Higgs couplings to the hidden sector vector fields which can constitute dark matter (DM). Abelian gauge sectors with minimal field content, necessary to render the gauge fields massive, have a natural Z_2 parity. This symmetry ensures stability of the vector fields making them viable dark matter candidates, while evading the usual electroweak constraints. We illustrate this idea with the Stueckelberg and Higgs mechanisms. Vector DM is consistent with the WMAP, XENON100, and LHC constraints, while it can affect significantly the invisible Higgs decay. Due to the enhanced branching ratio for the Higgs decay into the longitudinal components of the vector field, the vector Higgs portal provides an efficient way to hide the Higgs at the LHC. This could be the reason why the latest combined ATLAS/CMS data did not bring evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson.

Discrete R symmetries for the MSSM and its singlet extensions

We determine the anomaly free discrete R symmetries, consistent with the MSSM, that commute with SU(5) and suppress the $μ$ parameter and nucleon decay. We show that the order M of such $Z_M^R$ symmetries has to divide 24 and identify 5 viable symmetries. The simplest possibility is a $Z_4^R$ symmetry which commutes with SO(10). We present a string-derived model with this $Z_4^R$ symmetry and the exact MSSM spectrum below the GUT scale; in this model $Z_4^R$ originates from the Lorentz symmetry of compactified dimensions. We extend the discussion to include the singlet extensions of the MSSM and find $Z_4^R$ and $Z_8^R$ are the only possible symmetries capable of solving the $μ$ problem in the NMSSM. We also show that a singlet extension of the MSSM based on a $Z_{24}^R$ symmetry can provide a simultaneous solution to the $μ$ and strong CP problem with the axion coupling in the favoured window.

Higgs Portal Inflation

The Higgs sector of the Standard Model offers a unique opportunity to probe the hidden sector. The Higgs squared operator is the only dimension two operator which is Lorentz and gauge invariant. It can therefore couple both to scalar curvature and the hidden sector at the dim--4 level. We consider the possibility that a combination of the Higgs and a singlet from the hidden sector plays the role of inflaton, due to their large couplings to gravity. This implies that the quartic couplings satisfy certain constraints which leads to distinct low energy phenomenology, including Higgs signals at the LHC. We also address the unitarity issues and show that our analysis survives the unitarization procedure.

Large non-Gaussianity in non-minimal inflation

We consider a simple inflation model with a complex scalar field coupled to gravity non-minimally. Both the modulus and the angular directions of the complex scalar are slowly rolling, leading to two-field inflation. The modulus direction becomes flat due to the non-minimal coupling, and the angular direction becomes a pseudo-Goldstone boson from a small breaking of the global U(1) symmetry. We show that large non-Gaussianity can be produced during slow-roll inflation under a reasonable assumption on the initial condition of the angular direction. This scenario may be realized in particle physics models such as the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets.

The mu problem and sneutrino inflation

We consider sneutrino inflation and post-inflation cosmology in the singlet extension of the MSSM with approximate Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry, assuming that supersymmetry breaking is mediated by gauge interaction. The PQ symmetry is broken by the intermediate-scale VEVs of two flaton fields, which are determined by the interplay between radiative flaton soft masses and higher order terms. Then, from the flaton VEVs, we obtain the correct mu term and the right-handed(RH) neutrino masses for see-saw mechanism. We show that the RH sneutrino with non-minimal gravity coupling drives inflation, thanks to the same flaton coupling giving rise to the RH neutrino mass. After inflation, extra vector-like states, that are responsible for the radiative breaking of the PQ symmetry, results in thermal inflation with the flaton field, solving the gravitino problem caused by high reheating temperature. Our model predicts the spectral index to be n_s\simeq 0.96 due to the additional efoldings from thermal inflation. We show that a right dark matter abundance comes from the gravitino of 100 keV mass and a successful baryogenesis is possible via Affleck-Dine leptogenesis.

A unique Z_4^R symmetry for the MSSM

We consider the possible anomaly free Abelian discrete symmetries of the MSSM that forbid the mu-term at perturbative order. Allowing for anomaly cancellation via the Green-Schwarz mechanism we identify discrete R-symmetries as the only possibility and prove that there is a unique Z_4^R symmetry that commutes with SO(10). We argue that non-perturbative effects will generate a mu-term of electroweak order thus solving the mu-problem. The non-perturbative effects break the Z_4^R symmetry leaving an exact Z_2 matter parity. As a result dimension four baryon- and lepton-number violating operators are absent while, at the non-perturbative level, dimension five baryon- and lepton-number violating operators get induced but are highly suppressed so that the nucleon decay rate is well within present bounds.

Chaotic inflation in Jordan frame supergravity

We consider the inflationary scenario with non-minimal coupling in 4D Jordan frame supergravity. We find that there occurs a tachyonic instability along the direction of the accompanying non-inflaton field in generic Jordan frame supergravity models. We propose a higher order correction to the Jordan frame function for solving the tachyonic mass problem and show that the necessary correction can be naturally generated by the heavy thresholds without spoiling the slow-roll conditions. We discuss the implication of the result on the Higgs inflation in NMSSM.

Comment on Higgs Inflation and Naturalness

We rebut the recent claim (arXiv:0912.5463) that Einstein-frame scattering in the Higgs inflation model is unitary above the cut-off energy Lambda ~ Mp/xi. We show explicitly how unitarity problems arise in both the Einstein and Jordan frames of the theory. In a covariant gauge they arise from non-minimal Higgs self-couplings, which cannot be removed by field redefinitions because the target space is not flat. In unitary gauge, where there is only a single scalar which can be redefined to achieve canonical kinetic terms, the unitarity problems arise through non-minimal Higgs-gauge couplings.

Dark matter, mu problem and neutrino mass with gauged R-symmetry

We show that the mu problem and the strong CP problem can be resolved in the context of the gauged U(1)_R symmetry, realizing an automatic Peccei-Quinn symmetry. In this scheme, right-handed neutrinos can be introduced to explain small Majorana or Dirac neutrino mass. The U(1)_R D-term mediated SUSY breaking, called the U(1)_R mediation, gives rise to a specific form of the flavor-conserving superpartner masses. For the given solution to the mu problem, electroweak symmetry breaking condition requires the superpartners of the Standard Model at low energy to be much heavier than the gravitino. Thus dark matter candidate can be either gravitino or right-handed sneutrino. In the Majorana neutrino case, only gravitino is a natural dark matter candidate. On the other hand, in the Dirac neutrino case, the right-handed sneutrino can be also a dark matter candidate as it gets mass only from SUSY breaking. We discuss the non-thermal production of our dark matter candidates from the late decay of stau and find that the constraints from the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis can be evaded for a TeV-scale stau mass.

Unitarizing Higgs Inflation

We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model Higgs inflation with one new real scalar field which preserves unitarity up to the Planck scale. The new scalar field (called sigma) completes in the ultraviolet the theory of Higgs inflation by linearizing the Higgs kinetic term in the Einstein frame, just as the non-linear sigma model is unitarized into its linear version. The unitarity cutoff of the effective theory, obtained by integrating out the sigma field, varies with the background value of the Higgs field. In our setup, both the Higgs field and the sigma field participate in the inflationary dynamics, following the flat direction of the potential. We obtain the same slow-roll parameters and spectral index as in the original Higgs inflation but we find that the Hubble rate during inflation depends not only on the Higgs self-coupling, but also on the unknown couplings of the sigma field.

We consider a concrete model with manifest U(1)_R invariance for moduli stabilization and visible sector in the context of 4D effective supergravity with gauged U(1)_R and determine soft scalar masses in the visible sector mainly by a nonzero U(1)_R D-term. We obtain a low energy superparticle spectrum and discuss on the implications of the obtained non-universal scalar soft masses on the SUSY phenomenology such as dark matter relic abundances.

Gauge Coupling Unification in Six Dimensions

We compute the one-loop gauge couplings in six-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theories on the T^2/Z_2 orbifold with general GUT breaking boundary conditions. For concreteness, we apply the obtained general formulae to the gauge coupling running in a 6D SO(10) orbifold GUT where the GUT group is broken down to the standard model gauge group up to an extra U(1). We find that the one-loop corrections depend on the parity matrices encoding the orbifold boundary conditions as well as the volume and shape moduli of extra dimensions. When the U(1) is broken by the VEV of bulk singlets, the accompanying extra color triplets also affect the unification of the gauge couplings. In this case, the B-L breaking scale compatible with the gauge coupling unification is sensitive to the change of the compactification scales.

Higher Derivative Operators as Counterterms in Orbifold Compactifications

In the context of 5D N=1 supersymmetric models compactified on S_1/Z_2 or S_1/(Z_2 x Z_2') orbifolds and with brane-localised superpotential, higher derivative operators are generated radiatively as one-loop counterterms to the mass of the (brane or zero mode of the bulk) scalar field. It is shown that the presence of such operators which are brane-localised is not related to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking considered (F-term, discrete or continuous Scherk-Schwarz breaking) and initial supersymmetry does not protect against the dynamical generation of such operators. Since in many realistic models the scalar field is commonly regarded as the Higgs field, and the higher derivative operators seem a generic presence in orbifold compactifications, we stress the importance of these operators for solving the hierarchy problem.

Higher Derivative Operators from Transmission of Supersymmetry Breaking on S_1/Z_2

We discuss the role that higher derivative operators play in field theory orbifold compactifications on S_1/Z_2 with local and non-local (Scherk-Schwarz) breaking of supersymmetry. Integrating out the bulk fields generates brane-localised higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the brane (or zero-mode of the bulk) scalar field, identified with the Higgs field in many realistic models. Both Yukawa and gauge interactions are considered and the one-loop results found can be used to study the ``running'' of the scalar field mass with respect to the momentum scale in 5D orbifolds. In particular this allows the study of the behaviour of the mass under UV scaling of the momentum. The relation between supersymmetry breaking and the presence of higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the scalar field is investigated. This shows that, regardless of the breaking mechanism, (initial) supersymmetry cannot, in general, prevent the emergence of such operators. Some implications for phenomenology of the higher derivative operators are also presented.

Brane solutions of a spherical sigma model in six dimensions

We explore solutions of six dimensional gravity coupled to a non-linear sigma model, in the presence of co-dimension two branes. We investigate the compactifications induced by a spherical scalar manifold and analyze the conditions under which they are of finite volume and singularity free. We discuss the issue of single-valuedness of the scalar fields and provide some special embedding of the scalar manifold to the internal space which solves this problem. These brane solutions furnish some self-tuning features, however they do not provide a satisfactory explanation of the vanishing of the effective four dimensional cosmological constant. We discuss the properties of this model in relation with the self-tuning example based on a hyperbolic sigma model.

Softness of Brane-localized Supersymmetry Breaking on Orbifolds

We consider the brane-localized supersymmetry breaking in 5D compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. In case of a bulk gaugino with arbitrary brane masses for its even and odd modes, we find the mass spectrum and the wave functions of gaugino. We show that the gaugino masses at the distant brane are soft in the usual sense in the effective field theory with zero modes of bulk gauge fields and they are also extremely soft in view of the one-loop finite mass of a brane scalar in the KK regularization.

Spontaneous localization of bulk fields: the six-dimensional case

We study N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with $d=6$ bulk and $d=4$ brane fields charged under a U(1) gauge symmetry. Radiatively induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms lead to an instability of the bulk fields. We compute the profile of the bulk zero modes and observe the phenomenon of spontaneous localization towards the position of the branes. While this mechanism is quite similar to the $d=5$ case, the mass spectrum of the excited Kaluza-Klein modes shows a crucial difference.

Towards 5D Grand Unification without SUSY Flavor Problem

We consider the renormalization group approach to the SUSY flavor problem in the supersymmetric SU(5) model with one extra dimension. In higher dimensional SUSY gauge theories, it has been recently shown that power corrections due to the Kaluza-Klein states of gauge fields run the soft masses generated at the orbifold fixed point to flavor conserving values in the infra-red limit. In models with GUT breaking at the brane where the GUT scale can be larger than the compactification scale, we show that the addition of a bulk Higgs multiplet, which is necessary for the successful unification, is compatible with the flavor universality achieved at the compactification scale.

TeV scale 5D $SU(3)_W$ unification and the fixed point anomaly cancellation with chiral split multiplets

A possibility of 5D gauge unification of $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ in $SU(3)_W$ is examined. The orbifold compactification allows fixed points where $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ representations can be assigned. We present a few possibilities which give long proton lifetime, top-bottom mass hierarchy from geometry, and reasonable neutrino masses. In general, these {\it chiral models} can lead to fixed point anomalies. We can show easily, due to the simplicity of the model, that these anomalies are cancelled by the relevant Chern-Simons terms for all the models we consider. It is also shown that the fixed point U(1)--graviton--graviton anomaly cancels without the help from the Chern-Simons term. Hence, we conjecture that the fixed point anomalies can be cancelled if the effective 4D theory is made anomaly free by locating chiral fermions at the fixed points.

Top-bottom mass hierarchy, $s-μ$ puzzle and gauge coupling unification with split multiplets

A supersymmetric 5D SU(5) grand unification is considered. The SU(5) is broken down to $G_{SM}=SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ by the $Z_2\times Z_2'$ assignment of the bulk field(s). The matter fields are located at the fixed point(s). In the bulk, a Higgs multiplet $\bar 5_H$(containing the bottom doublet $H_1$) and the SU(5) gauge multiplet are located. At one fixed point, $H_2$(the top doublet) and the standard model matter multiplets are presented. Because of the difference of the locations of $H_1$ and $H_2$, one can obtain a hierarchy between top and bottom Yukawa couplings. We also present a possibility to understand the $s-μ$ mass puzzle in this framework of the split multiplet.

Wave function of the radion in the brane background with a massless scalar field and a self-tuning problem

We consider flat solutions in the brane background with a massless scalar field appearing in 5D $H^2_{MNPQ}$. Since there exist bulk singularities or arises the divergent 4D Planck mass, we should introduce a compact extra dimension, the size of which is then fixed by brane tension(s) and a bulk cosmological constant. Inspecting scalar perturbations around the flat solutions, we find that the flat solutions are stable vacua from the positive mass spectrum of radion. We show that the massless radion mode is projected out by the boundary condition arising in cutting off the extra dimension. Thus, the fixed extra dimension is not alterable, which is not useful toward a self-tuning of the cosmological constant.
