A possible relation between leptogenesis and PMNS phases

We propose a new scenario for baryogenesis through leptogenesis, where the CP phase relevant for leptogenesis is connected directly to the PMNS phase(s) in the light neutrino mixing matrix. The scenario is realized in case only one CP phase appears in the full theory, originating from the complex vacuum expextation value of a standard model singlet field. In order to realize this scheme, the electroweak symmetry is required to be broken during the leptogenesis era and a new loop diagram with an intermediate $W$ boson exchange including the low energy neutrino mixing matrix should play the dominant contribution to the CP violation for leptogenesis. In this letter, we discuss the new basic mechanism, which we call type-II leptogenesis, and give an estimate for maximally reachable baryon asymmetry depending on the PMNS phases.

Naturalness-guided Gluino Mass Bound from the Minimal Mixed Mediation of SUSY Breaking

In order to significantly reduce the fine-tuning associated with the electroweak symmetry breaking in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we consider not only the minimal gravity mediation effects but also the minimal gauge mediation ones for a common supersymmetry breaking source at a hidden sector. In this "Minimal Mixed Mediation model," the minimal forms for the Kahler potential and the gauge kinetic function are employed at tree level. The MSSM gaugino masses are radiatively generated through the gauge mediation. Since a "focus point" of the soft Higgs mass parameter, m_{h_u}^2 appears around 3-4 TeV energy scale in this case, m_{h_u}^2 is quite insensitive to stop masses. Instead, the naturalness of the small m_{h_u}^2 is more closely associated with the gluino mass rather than the stop mass unlike the conventional scenario. As a result, even a 3-4 TeV stop mass, which is known to explain the 125 GeV Higgs mass at three-loop level, can still be compatible with the naturalness of the electroweak scale. On the other hand, the requirements of various fine-tuning measures much smaller than 100 and |μ| < 600 GeV constrain the gluino mass to be 1.6 TeV < M_3 < 2.2 TeV, which is well-inside the discovery potential range of LHC RunII.

Perspective on completing natural inflation

We present a perspective on the inflation paths in 2-, 3-,,, N-flation models based on the ultraviolet completion in heterotic string theory, where a number of grand unification scale axions are used. The number of non-Abelian gauge groups for a natural inflation is restricted in string compactification, and we argue that the most plausible completion of natural inflation from a theory perspective is the 2-flation.

Shifted focus point of the Higgs mass parameter from the minimal mixed mediation of SUSY breaking

We employ both the minimal gravity- and the minimal gauge mediations of supersymmetry breaking at the grand unified theory (GUT) scale in a single supergravity framework, assuming the gaugino masses are generated dominantly by the minimal gauge mediation effects. In such a "minimal mixed mediation model," a "focus point" of the soft Higgs mass parameter, m_{h_u}^2 emerges at 3-4 TeV energy scale, which is exactly the stop mass scale needed for explaining the 126 GeV Higgs boson mass without the "A-term" at the three loop level. As a result, m_{h_u}^2 can be quite insensitive to various trial stop masses at low energy, reducing the fine-tuning measures to be much smaller than 100 even for a 3-4 TeV low energy stop mass and -0.5 < A_t/m_0 < +0.1 at the GUT scale. The gluino mass is predicted to be about 1.7 TeV, which could readily be tested at LHC run2.

Inert Higgs extension of the NMSSM

We introduce one pair of inert Higgs doublets {H_d, H_u} and singlets {N^c, N}, and consider their couplings with the Higgs doublets of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), W \supset y_N N^c h_u H_d + y_N' N h_d H_u. We assign extra U(1)_{Z'} gauge charges only to the extra vector-like superfields, and so all the MSSM superfields remain neutral under the new U(1)_{Z'}. They can be an extension of the "λterm," W \supset λS h_u h_d in the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM). Due to the U(1)_{Z'}, the maximally allowed low energy value of y_N can be lifted up to 0.85, avoiding a Landau-pole (LP) below the grand unification scale. Such colorless vector-like superfields remarkably enhance the radiative MSSM Higgs mass particularly for large tanβthrough the y_N term and the corresponding holomorphic soft term. As a result, the lower bound of λand the upper bound of tanβcan be relaxed to disappear from the restricted parameter space of the original NMSSM, 0.6 < λ< 0.7 and 1< tanβ< 3. Thus, the valid parameter space significantly expands up to 0 < λ< 0.7, 0 < y_N < 0.85, and 2 < tanβ< 50, evading the LP problem and also explaining the 126 GeV Higgs mass naturally.

Large tensor spectrum of BICEP2 in the natural SUSY hybrid model

The large tensor spectrum recently observed by the BICEP2 Collaboration requires a super-Planckian field variation of the inflaton in the single-field inflationary scenario. The required slow-roll parameter ε\approx 0.01 would restrict the e-folding number to around 7 in (sub-)Planckian inflationary models. To overcome such problems, we consider a two-field scenario based on the natural assisted supersymmetric (SUSY) hybrid model ("natural SUSY hybrid inflation" [1]), which combines the SUSY hybrid and the natural inflation models. The axionic inflaton field from the natural inflation sector can admit the right values for the tensor spectrum as well as a spectral index of 0.96 with a decay constant smaller than the Planck scale, f \lesssim M_P. On the other hand, the vacuum energy of 2 x 10^{16} GeV with 50 e-folds is provided by the inflaton coming from the SUSY hybrid sector, avoiding the eta problem. These are achieved by introducing both the U(1)_R and a shift symmetry, and employing the minimal Kahler potential.

Light dark matter for Fermi-LAT and CDMS observations

Light fermionic/scalar dark matter (DM) (m_DM ~ 8 GeV) neutral under the standard model can be responsible for the CDMS and CoGeNT signals, and the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray excesses. In order to explain them in a relatively simple framework, we have explored various DM annihilation and scattering processes, discussing important phenomenological constraints coming from particle physics. Assuming that the two independent observations have a common DM origin and the processes arise through a common mediator, DM should annihilate into tau/anti-tau lepton pairs through an s-channel, and scatter with nuclei through a t-channel process. To avoid the p-wave suppression, a new Higgs-like scalar field with a mass of O(1) TeV is necessary as a common mediator of both the processes. We propose a supersymmetric model realizing the scenario.

Precise focus point scenario for a natural Higgs boson in the MSSM

A small Higgs mass parameter m_{h_u}^2 can be insensitive to various trial heavy stop masses, if a universal soft squared mass is assumed for the chiral superpartners and the Higgs boson at the grand unification (GUT) scale, and a focus point (FP) of m_{h_u}^2 appears around the stop mass scale. The challenges in the FP scenario are (1) a too heavy stop mass (~ 5 TeV) needed for the 126 GeV Higgs mass and (2) the too high gluino mass bound (> 1.4 TeV). For a successful FP scenario, we consider (1) a superheavy right-hand (RH) neutrino and (2) the first and second generations of hierarchically heavier chiral superpartners. The RH neutrino can move a FP in the higher energy direction in the space of (Q, m_{h_u}^2(Q)), where Q denotes the renormalization scale. On the other hand, the hierarchically heavier chiral superpartners can lift up a FP in that space through two-loop gauge interactions. Precise focusing of m_{h_u}^2(Q) is achieved with the RH neutrino mass of ~ 10^{14} GeV together with an order one (0.9-1.2) Dirac Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson, and the hierarchically heavy masses of 15-20 TeV for the heavier generations of superpartners, when the U(1)_R breaking soft parameters, m_{1/2} and A_0 are set to be 1 TeV at the GUT scale. Those values can naturally explain the small neutrino mass through the seesaw mechanism, and suppress the flavor violating processes in supersymmetric models.

Primordial gravitational wave of BICEP2 from dynamical double hybrid inflation

BICEP2 has observed a primordial gravitational wave corresponding to the tensor-to-scalar ratio of 0.16. It seems to require a super-Planckian inflationary model. In this paper, we propose a double hybrid inflation model, where the inflaton potential dynamically changes with the evolution of the inflaton fields. During the first phase of inflation over 7 e-folds, the power spectrum can be almost constant by a large linear term in the hybrid potential, which is responsible also for the large tensor-to-scalar ratio. In the second phase of 50 e-folds, the dominant potential becomes dynamically changed to the logarithmic form as in the ordinary supersymmetric hybrid inflation, which is performed by the second inflaton field. In this model, the sub-Planckian field values (~0.9 M_P) can still yield the correct cosmic observations with the sufficient e-folds.

130 GeV Fermi gamma-ray line from dark matter decay

The 130 GeV gamma-ray line based on tentative analyses on the Fermi-LAT data is hard to be understood with dark matter annihilation in the conventional framework of the MSSM. We point out that it can be nicely explained with two body decay of a scalar dark matter ($\tildeϕ_{\rm DM}\rightarrowγγ$) by the dimension 6 operator suppressed with the mass of the grand unification scale ($\sim 10^{16}$ GeV), ${\cal L}\supset|\tildeϕ_{\rm DM}|^2F_{μν}F^{μν}/M_{\rm GUT}^2$, in which the scalar dark matter $\tildeϕ_{\rm DM}$ develops a TeV scale vacuum expectation value. We propose a viable model explaining the 130 GeV gamma-ray line.

Decaying WIMP dark matter for AMS-02 cosmic positron excess

For explaining the AMS-02 cosmic positron excess, which was recently reported, we consider a scenario of thermally produced and decaying dark matter (DM) into the standard model (SM) leptons with an extremely small decay rate, Γ_{DM} \sim 10^{-26} sec.^{-1}. Since the needed DM mass is relatively heavy (700 GeV < m_{DM} < 3000 GeV), we introduce another DM component apart from the lightest supersymmetric particle ("LSP"). For its (meta-) stability and annihilation into other particles, the new DM should be accompanied with another Z_2 symmetry apart from the R-parity. Sizable renormalizable couplings of the new DM with SM particles, which are necessary for its thermalization in the early universe, cannot destabilize the new DM because of the new Z_2 symmetry. Since the new DM was thermally produced, it can naturally explain the present energy density of the universe. The new DM can decay into the SM leptons (and the LSP) only through non-renormalizable operators suppressed by a superheavy squared mass parameter after the new symmetry is broken around TeV scale. We realize this scenario in a model of "gauged vector-like leptons," which was proposed recently for the naturalness of the Higgs boson.

Hidden-sector-assisted 125 GeV Higgs boson

In order to significantly raise the mass of the supersymmetry Higgs boson, we consider a radiative correction to it by heavy (\sim 1 TeV) hidden sector fields, which communicate with the Higgs through relatively heavy "messengers" (300-500 GeV). The messenger fields (S, \bar{S}) are coupled to the Higgs ("y_HSH_uH_d," y_H\lesssim 0.7) and also to hidden sector fields with a Yukawa coupling of order unity. The hidden sector fields are assumed to be large representations of a hidden gauge group, and so their scalar partner masses can be heavier than other typical soft scalars in the visible sector. Even with a relatively small y_H (\sim 0.2) or tanβ\sim 10 but without top-stop's considerable contributions, the radiative correction by such hidden sector fields can be enhanced enough to yield the 125 GeV Higgs mass.

Relaxing the Landau-pole constraint in the NMSSM with the Abelian gauge symmetries

In order to relax the Landau pole constraint on "λ", which is a coupling constant between a singlet S and the MSSM Higgs, λSh_uh_d in the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM), and also maintain the gauge coupling unification, we consider U(1) gauge extensions of the NMSSM. For relatively strong U(1) gauge interactions down to low energies, we assign U(1) charges only to the Higgs and the third family of the chiral matter among the MSSM superfields. In the U(1)_Z [U(1)_Z\times U(1)_X] extension, the low energy value of λcan be lifted up to 0.85-0.95 [0.9-1.0], depending on the employed charge normalizations, when λand the new gauge couplings are required not to blow up below the 10^{16} GeV energy scale. Introduction of extra vector-like superfields can induce the desired Yukawa couplings for the first two families of the chiral matter. We also discuss various phenomenological constraints associated with extra U(1) breaking.

Singlet Extension of the MSSM for 125 GeV Higgs Mass with the Least Tuning

In order to raise the Higgs mass up to 125 GeV and relieve the fine-tuning associated with the heavy s-top mass in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we propose a new singlet extension of the MSSM. In this scenario, the additional Higgs mass is radiatively generated also in a hidden sector, and the effect is tansmitted to the Higgs through a messenger field. The Higgs mass can be efficiently increased by the parameters of the superpotential as in the extra matter scenario, but free from the constraints on extra colored matter fields by the LHC experiments. As a result, the tuning problem can be remarkably mitigated by taking low enough messenger mass (\sim 300 GeV) and mass parameter scales (\sim 500 GeV).

U(1)_{B_1+B_2-2L_1} mediation for the natural SUSY and the anomalous muon g-2

We propose a U(1)^\prime mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, in which U(1)^\prime is identified with U(1)_{B_1+B_2-2L_1}. The U(1)_{B_1+B_2-2L_1} gauge symmetry, which is anomaly-free with the field contents of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, assigns \pm 1/3 charges to the first and second generations of the quarks, and \mp 2 to the first generation of the leptons. As a result, the first two generations of squarks acquire masses of about 7 TeV, and the first generation of the sleptons do those of 40 TeV, respectively, in the presence of one or three pairs of extra vector-like matter {{\bf 5},\bar{\bf 5}}. Non-observation on extra colored particles below 1 TeV at the large hadron collider, and also the flavor violations such as μ^-\rightarrow e^-γare explained. By virtue of such a gauge symmetry, proton stability can be protected. The other squarks and sleptons as well as the gauginos can obtain masses of order 10^{2-3} GeV through the conventional gravity or gauge mediated SUSY breaking mechanism. The relatively light smuon/sneutrino and the neutralino/chargino could be responsible for the (g-2)_μdeviated from the standard model prediction. The stop mass of \sim 500 GeV relieves the fine-tuning problem in the Higgs sector. Two-loop effects by the relatively heavy sfermions can protect the smallness of the stop mass from the radiative correction by the heavy gluino (\gtrsim 1 TeV). Extra vector-like matter can enhance the radiative corrections to the Higgs mass up to 126 GeV, and induce the desired mixing among the chiral fermions after U(1)_{B_1+B_2-2L_1} breaking.

Vector-like leptons and extra gauge symmetry for the natural Higgs boson

For raising the radiative Higgs mass without a serious fine-tuning in the Higgs sector, we introduce vector-like lepton doublets and neutral singlets {L,L^c; N,N^c}, and consider their order one Yukawa coupling to the Higgs, W \supset y_NLh_uN^c. The 125 GeV Higgs mass can be naturally explained with the stop mass squared of ~(500 GeV)^2 and even without the "A-term" contributions. It is possible because of the quartic power of y_N in the radiative Higgs mass correction, and much less stringent mass bounds on extra leptonic matter. In order to avoid blowup of y_N at higher energy scales, a non-Abelian gauge extension of the MSSM is attempted, under which {L,L^c; N,N^c} are charged, while all the ordinary MSSM superfields remain neutral. We discuss the gauge coupling unification. This mechanism can be applied also for enhancing h^0 \rightarrow γγwith W \supset y_EL^ch_uE, if the charged lepton singlets {E,E^c} are also introduced.

Primordial curvature perturbation during and at the end of multi-field inflation

We study the generation of the primordial curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation. Considering both the evolution of the perturbation during inflation and the effects generated at the end of inflation, we present a general formula for the curvature perturbation. We provide the analytic expressions of the power spectrum, spectral tilt and non-Gaussianity for the separable potentials of two inflaton scalars, and apply them to some specific models.

Spectral Index and Non-Gaussianity in Supersymmetric Hybrid Inflation

We consider a supersymmetric hybrid inflation model with two inflaton fields. The superpotential during inflation is dominated by W=(κS+κ' S')M^2, where S, S' are inflatons carrying the same U(1)_R charge, κ, κ' are dimensionless couplings, and M (\sim 10^{15-16} GeV) is a dimensionful parameter associated with a symmetry breaking scale. One light mass eigenstate drives inflation, while the other heavier mass eigenstate is stuck to the origin. The smallness of the lighter inflaton mass for the scalar spectral index n_s\approx 0.96, which is the center value of WMAP7, can be controlled by the ratio κ'/κthrough the supergravity corrections. We also discuss the possibility of the two field inflation and large non-Gaussianity in this setup.

preprint2011arXiv

Natural Hybrid Inflation Model with Large Non-Gaussianity

We propose an inflationary model ("natural hybrid model"), which combines the supersymmetric hybrid model and the natural inflation model to achieve the spectral index of 0.96, and the axion decay constant smaller than the Planck scale, f<< M_P. By introducing both U(1)_R and a shift symmetry and employing the minimal Kahler potential, the eta-problem can be still avoided. The two inflaton fields in this model can admit large non-Gaussianity.

Weak Mixing Angle and Proton Stability in F-theory GUT

It is pointed out that a class of flipped SU(5) models based on F-theory naturally explains the gauge coupling unification. It is because the group SU(5) x U(1)_X is embedded in SO(10) and E_8. To prohibit the dimension 4 and 5 proton decay processes, the structure group should be SU(3) or smaller. Extra heavy vector-like pairs of {5_{-2},5*_2} except only one pair of Higgs should be also disallowed, because they could induce the unwanted dimension 5 proton decays. We construct a simple global F-theory model considering these points. To maintain sin^2 theta_W^0 = 3/8 at the GUT scale, the fluxes are turned-on only on the flavor branes.

PAMELA's cosmic positron from decaying LSP in SO(10) SUSY GUT

We propose two viable scenarios explaining the recent observations on cosmic positron excess. In both scenarios, the present relic density in the Universe is assumed to be still supported by thermally produced WIMP or LSP (χ). One of the scenarios is based on two dark matter (DM) components (χ,X) scenario, and the other is on SO(10) SUSY GUT. In the two DM components scenario, extremely small amount of non-thermally produced meta-stable DM component [O(10^{-10}) < n_X /n_χ] explains the cosmic positron excess. In the SO(10) model, extremely small R-parity violation for LSP decay to e^\pm is naturally achieved with a non-zero VEV of the superpartner of one right-handed neutrino (\tildeν^c) and a global symmetry.

preprint2009arXiv

Decaying LSP in SO(10) GUT and PAMELA's Cosmic Positron

We suppose that the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is the dark matter. The bino-like LSP can decay through the SO(10) gauge interactions, if one right-handed (RH) neutrino (ν^c_1) is lighter than the LSP and its superpartner (\tildeν^c_1) develops a vacuum expectation value (VEV), raising extremely small R-parity violation naturally. The leptonic decay modes can be dominant, if the VEV scale of {\bf 16}_H is a few orders of magnitude lower than the VEV of {\bf 45}_H (\approx 10^{16} GeV), and if a slepton (\tilde{e}^c_1) is relatively lighter than squarks. The desired decay rate of the LSP, Γ_χ \sim 10^{-26} sec.^{-1} to explain PAMELA data can be naturally achieved, because the gaugino mediating the LSP decay is superheavy. From PAMELA data, the SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} breaking scale (or the {\bf 16}_H VEV scale) can be determined. A global symmetry is necessary to suppress the Yukawa couplings between one RH (s)neutrino and the MSSM fields. Even if one RH neutrino is quite light, the seesaw mechanism providing the extremely light three physical neutrinos and their oscillations is still at work.

White dwarf axions, PAMELA data, and flipped-SU(5)

Recently, there are two hints arising from physics beyond the standard model. One is a possible energy loss mechanism due to emission of very weakly interacting light particles from white dwarf stars, with a coupling strength ~ 0.7x10^{-13}, and another is the high energy positrons observed by the PAMELA satellite experiment. We construct a supersymmetric flipped-SU(5) model, SU(5)xU(1)_X with appropriate additional symmetries, [U(1)_H]_{gauge}x[U(1)_RxU(1)_Γ]_{global}xZ_2, such that these are explained by a very light electrophilic axion of mass 0.5 meV from the spontaneously broken U(1)_Γand two component cold dark matters from Z_2 parity. We show that in the flipped-SU(5) there exists a basic mechanism for allowing excess positrons through the charged SU(2) singlet leptons, but not allowing anti-proton excess due to the absence of the SU(2) singlet quarks. We show the discovery potential of the charged SU(2) singlet E at the LHC experiments by observing the electron and positron spectrum. With these symmetries, we also comment on the mass hierarchy between the top and bottom quarks.

Superstring standard model from Z_{12-I} orbifold compactification with and without exotics, and effective R-parity

We construct a supersymmetric standard model in the context of the $Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification of the heterotic string theory. The gauge group is $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)^4\times[SO(10)\times U(1)^3]'$. We obtain three chiral families, $3\times\{Q,d^c,u^c,L,e^c,ν^c\}$, and Higgs doublets. There are numerous neutral singlets many of which can have VEVs so that low energy phenomenology on Yukawa couplings can be satisfied. In one assignment (Model E) of the electroweak hypercharge, we obtain the string scale value of $sin^2θ_W^0={3/8}$ and another exactly massless {\it exphoton} (in addition to the photon) coupling to exotic particles only. There are color triplet and anti-triplet exotics, $α$ and $\barα$, $SU(2)_L$ doublet exotics, $δ$ and $\barδ$, and $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L$ singlet but $Y={2/3},-{1/3},-{2/3},{1/3}$ exotics, $ξ,η,\barξ, \barη$. We show that all these vector-like exotics achieve heavy masses by appropriate VEVs of neutral singlets. One can find an effective R-parity between light (electroweak scale) particles so that proton and the LSP can live sufficiently long. In another assignment (Model S) of the electroweak hypercharge, there does not appear any exotic particle but $sin^2θ_W^0={3/14}$.

Flipped SU(5) Predicts $δT/T$

We discuss hybrid inflation in supersymmetric flipped SU(5) model such that the cosmic microwave anisotropy $δT/T$ is essentially proportional to $(M /M_{P})^2$, where $M$ denotes the symmetry breaking scale and $M_{P}$ ($=2.4\times 10^{18}$ GeV) is the reduced Planck mass. The magnitude of $M$ determined from $δT/T$ measurements can be consistent with the value inferred from the evolution of SU(3) and SU(2) gauge couplings. In other words, one could state that flipped SU(5) predicts (more precisely `postdicts') $δT/T$. The scalar spectral index $n_s = 0.993\pm 0.007$, the scalar to tensor ratio satisfies $r \lapproxeq 10^{-6}$, while $dn_s/d{\rm ln}k \lapproxeq 4\times 10^{-4}$.

The cosmologically unwanted topological defects are inflated away, and from $δT/ T$, the $B-L$ breaking scale is estimated to be of order $10^{16}-10^{17}$ GeV. $δT/T$ and Neutrino Masses in SU(5)

We implement inflation in a supersymmetric SU(5) model with U(1) R-symmetry such that the cosmic microwave anisotropy $δT/T$ is proportional to $(M/M_{\rm Planck})^2$, where $M\sim M_{GUT}=2-3\times 10^{16}$ GeV, the SU(5) breaking scale, and $M_{\rm Planck}=2.4\times 10^{19}$ GeV. The presence of a global $U(1)_X$ symmetry, spontaneously broken also at scale $M_{GUT}$, provides an upper bound $M_{GUT}^2/M_{\rm Planck}\sim 10^{14}$ GeV on the masses of SU(5) singlet right handed neutrinos, which explains the mass scale associated with atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The SU(5) monopoles and $U(1)_X$ cosmic strings are inflated away. Although the doublet-triplet splitting requires fine-tuning, the MSSM $μ$ problem is resolved and dimension five proton decay is strongly suppressed.

A General Analysis of Corrections to the Standard See-saw Formula in Grand Unified Models

In realistic grand unified models there are typically extra vectorlike matter multiplets at the GUT scale that are needed to explain the family hierarchy. These contain neutrinos that, when integrated out, can modify the usual neutrino see-saw formula. A general analysis is given. It is noted that such modifications can explain why the neutrinos do not exhibit a strong family hierarchy like the other types of fermions.

Brane gravity, massless bulk scalar and self-tuning of the cosmological constant

We show that a self-tuning mechanism of the cosmological constant could work in 5D non-compact space-time with a $Z_2$ symmetry in the presence of a massless scalar field. The standard model matter fields live only on the 4D brane. The change of vacuum energy on the brane (brane cosmological constant) by, for instance, electroweak and QCD phase transitions, just gives rise to dynamical shifts of the profiles of the background metric and the scalar field in the extra dimension, keeping 4D space-time flat without any fine-tuning. To avoid naked singularities in the bulk, the brane cosmological constant should be negative. We introduce an additional brane-localized 4D Einstein-Hilbert term so as to provide the observed 4D gravity with the non-compact extra dimension. With a general form of brane-localized gravity term allowed by the symmetries, the low energy Einstein gravity is successfully reproduced on the brane at long distances. We show this phenomenon explicitly for the case of vanishing bulk cosmological constant.

Einstein Gravity on a Brane in 5D Non-compact Flat Spacetime -DGP model revisited-

We revisit the 5D gravity model by Dvali, Gabadadze, and Porrati (DGP). Within their framework it was shown that even in 5D non-compact Minkowski space $(x^μ,z)$, the Newtonian gravity can emerge on a brane at short distances by introducing a brane-localized 4D Einstein-Hilbert term $δ(z)M_4^2\sqrt{|\bar{g}_4|}\bar{R}_4$ in the action. Based on this idea, we construct simple setups in which graviton standing waves can arise, and we introduce brane-localized $z$ derivative terms as a correction to $δ(z)M_4^2\sqrt{|\bar{g}_4|}\bar{R}_4$. We show that the gravity potential of brane matter becomes $-\frac{1}{r}$ at {\it long} distances, because the brane-localized $z$ derivative terms allow only a smooth graviton wave function near the brane. Since the bulk gravity coupling may be arbitrarily small, strongly interacting modes from the 5D graviton do not appear. We note that the brane metric utilized to construct $δ(z)M_4^2\sqrt{|\bar{g}_4|}\bar{R}_4$ can be relatively different from the bulk metric by a conformal factor, and show that the graviton tensor structure that the 4D Einstein gravity predicts are reproduced in DGP type models.

Inflationary Cosmology with Five Dimensional SO(10)

We discuss inflationary cosmology in a five dimensional SO(10) model compactified on $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$, which yields $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)_X$ below the compactification scale. The gauge symmetry $SU(5)\times U(1)_X$ is preserved on one of the fixed points, while ``flipped'' $SU(5)'\times U(1)'_X$ is on the other fixed point. Inflation is associated with $U(1)_X$ breaking, and is implemented through $F$-term scalar potentials on the two fixed points. A brane-localized Einstein-Hilbert term allows both branes to have positive tensions during inflation. The scale of $U(1)_X$ breaking is fixed from $δT/T$ measurements to be around $10^{16}$ GeV, and the scalar spectral index $n=0.98-0.99$. The inflaton field decays into right-handed neutrinos whose subsequent out of equilibrium decay yield the observed baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis.

Low Energy Consequences of Five Dimensional SO(10)

We consider five dimensional (5D) supersymmetric SO(10) compactified on the orbifold $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$ such that the SO(10) gauge symmetry is broken on both fixed points (branes), and the residual gauge symmetry is $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)_X$. We explore one example in which the gauge symmetries on the two branes are respectively $SU(5)\times U(1)_X$ and $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$, and the MSSM gauge symmetry is recovered by the usual Higgs mechanism. We discuss how fermion masses and mixings can be understood in this framework by introducing a flavor $U(1)_F$ symmetry. Unification of the MSSM gauge couplings and proton stability are also considered. An order of magnitude increase in sensitivity could reveal proton decay.

Grand Unified Inflation Confronts WMAP

In a class of realistic four and five dimensional supersymmetric grand unified models, the scalar spectral index is found to be $n_s=0.98 (\pm 0.01)$, in excellent agreement with the values determined by several previous experiments and most recently by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). The models predict $dn_s/d{\rm ln}k\sim 10^{-3}$ and a negligible tensor-to-scalar ratio $r\sim 10^{-8}$. A new five dimensional supersymmetric SO(10) model along these is presented in which inflation is associated with the breaking of SO(10) to SU(5) at scale $M$, with $δT/T\propto (M/M_{\rm Planck})^2$, so that $M\simeq 10^{16}$ GeV. The inflaton decay leads to the observed baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis. We also discuss how the monopole problem is solved without the use of non-renormalizable terms.

GUT Scale And Leptogenesis From 5D Inflation

We discuss a five dimensional inflationary scenario based on a supersymmetric SO(10) model compactified on $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$. Inflation is implemented through scalar potentials on four dimensional branes, and a brane-localized Einstein-Hilbert term is essential to make both brane vacuum energies positive during inflation. The orbifold boundary conditions break the SO(10) gauge symmetry to $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ ($\equiv H$). The inflationary scenario yields $δT/T\propto (M/M_{\rm Planck})^2$, which fixes $M$, the symmetry breaking scale of $H$ to be close to the SUSY GUT scale of $10^{16}$ GeV. The scalar spectral index $n$ is $0.98-0.99$, while the gravitational wave contribution to the quadrupole anisotropy is negligible ($\lapproxeq 1 {%}$). The inflaton decay into the lightest right handed neutrinos yields the observed baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis.

Family Unification in Five and Six Dimensions

In family unification models, all three families of quarks and leptons are grouped together into an irreducible representation of a simple gauge group, thus unifying the Standard Model gauge symmetries and a gauged family symmetry. Large orthogonal groups, and the exceptional groups $E_7$ and $E_8$ have been much studied for family unification. The main theoretical difficulty of family unification is the existence of mirror families at the weak scale. It is shown here that family unification without mirror families can be realized in simple five-dimensional and six-dimensional orbifold models similar to those recently proposed for SU(5) and SO(10) grand unification. It is noted that a family unification group that survived to near the weak scale and whose coupling extrapolated to high scales unified with those of the Standard model would be evidence accessible in principle at low energy of the existence of small (Planckian or GUT-scale) extra dimensions.

Non-universal Soft Parameters in Brane World and the Flavor Problem in Supergravity

We consider gravity mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in 5D spacetime with two 4D branes B1 and B2 separated in the extra dimension. Using an off-shell 5D supergravity (SUGRA) formalism, we argue that the SUSY breaking scales could be non-universal even at the fundamental scale in a brane world setting, since SUSY breaking effects could be effectively localized. As an application, we suggest a model in which the two light chiral MSSM generations reside on B1, while the third generation is located on B2, and the Higgs multiplets as well as gravity and gauge multiplets reside in the bulk. For SUSY breaking of the order of 10--20 TeV caused by a hidden sector localized at B1, the scalars belonging to the first two generations can become sufficiently heavy to overcome the SUSY flavor problem. SUSY breaking on B2 from a different localized hidden sector gives rise to the third generation soft scalar masses of the order of 1 TeV. Gaugino masses are also of the order of 1 TeV if the size of the extra dimension is $\sim 10^{-16}$ ${\rm GeV}^{-1}$. As in 4D effective supersymmetric theory, an adjustment of TeV scale parameters is needed to realize the 100 GeV electroweak symmetry breaking scale.

Branes and Inflationary Cosmology

We discuss a brane based inflationary scenario in which an initially non-supersymmetric configuration involving a D4 brane is dynamically transformed into a supersymmteric one in a background space-time geometry determined by a stack of D6 branes. Inflation is realized in the effective four dimensional theory and ends after reaching a stable BPS configuration. The scalar spectral index turns out to be 0.98. Under some simplifying assumption the reheat temperature, Hubble constant and the string scale are estimated to be of order $10^{8}$ GeV, $10^{12}$ GeV and $10^{16}$ GeV, respectively.

Wave function of the radion in the brane background with a massless scalar field and a self-tuning problem

We consider flat solutions in the brane background with a massless scalar field appearing in 5D $H^2_{MNPQ}$. Since there exist bulk singularities or arises the divergent 4D Planck mass, we should introduce a compact extra dimension, the size of which is then fixed by brane tension(s) and a bulk cosmological constant. Inspecting scalar perturbations around the flat solutions, we find that the flat solutions are stable vacua from the positive mass spectrum of radion. We show that the massless radion mode is projected out by the boundary condition arising in cutting off the extra dimension. Thus, the fixed extra dimension is not alterable, which is not useful toward a self-tuning of the cosmological constant.
