Dynamic programming equation for the mean field optimal stopping problem

We study the optimal stopping problem of McKean-Vlasov diffusions when the criterion is a function of the law of the stopped process. A remarkable new feature in this setting is that the stopping time also impacts the dynamics of the stopped process through the dependence of the coefficients on the law. The mean field stopping problem is introduced in weak formulation in terms of the joint marginal law of the stopped underlying process and the survival process. This specification satisfies a dynamic programming principle. The corresponding dynamic programming equation is an obstacle problem on the Wasserstein space, and is obtained by means of a general Itô formula for flows of marginal laws of càdlàg semimartingales. Our verification result characterizes the nature of optimal stopping policies, highlighting the crucial need to randomized stopping. The effectiveness of our dynamic programming equation is illustrated by various examples including the mean-variance optimal stopping problem.

A New Probabilistic V-Net Model with Hierarchical Spatial Feature Transform for Efficient Abdominal Multi-Organ Segmentation

Accurate and robust abdominal multi-organ segmentation from CT imaging of different modalities is a challenging task due to complex inter- and intra-organ shape and appearance variations among abdominal organs. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic multi-organ segmentation network with hierarchical spatial-wise feature modulation to capture flexible organ semantic variants and inject the learnt variants into different scales of feature maps for guiding segmentation. More specifically, we design an input decomposition module via a conditional variational auto-encoder to learn organ-specific distributions on the low dimensional latent space and model richer organ semantic variations that is conditioned on input images. Then by integrating these learned variations into the V-Net decoder hierarchically via spatial feature transformation, which has the ability to convert the variations into conditional Affine transformation parameters for spatial-wise feature maps modulating and guiding the fine-scale segmentation. The proposed method is trained on the publicly available AbdomenCT-1K dataset and evaluated on two other open datasets, i.e., 100 challenging/pathological testing patient cases from AbdomenCT-1K fully-supervised abdominal organ segmentation benchmark and 90 cases from TCIA+&BTCV dataset. Highly competitive or superior quantitative segmentation results have been achieved using these datasets for four abdominal organs of liver, kidney, spleen and pancreas with reported Dice scores improved by 7.3% for kidneys and 9.7% for pancreas, while being ~7 times faster than two strong baseline segmentation methods(nnUNet and CoTr).

AvatarGen: a 3D Generative Model for Animatable Human Avatars

Unsupervised generation of clothed virtual humans with various appearance and animatable poses is important for creating 3D human avatars and other AR/VR applications. Existing methods are either limited to rigid object modeling, or not generative and thus unable to synthesize high-quality virtual humans and animate them. In this work, we propose AvatarGen, the first method that enables not only non-rigid human generation with diverse appearance but also full control over poses and viewpoints, while only requiring 2D images for training. Specifically, it extends the recent 3D GANs to clothed human generation by utilizing a coarse human body model as a proxy to warp the observation space into a standard avatar under a canonical space. To model non-rigid dynamics, it introduces a deformation network to learn pose-dependent deformations in the canonical space. To improve geometry quality of the generated human avatars, it leverages signed distance field as geometric representation, which allows more direct regularization from the body model on the geometry learning. Benefiting from these designs, our method can generate animatable human avatars with high-quality appearance and geometry modeling, significantly outperforming previous 3D GANs. Furthermore, it is competent for many applications, e.g., single-view reconstruction, reanimation, and text-guided synthesis. Code and pre-trained model will be available.

Geometry-Guided Progressive NeRF for Generalizable and Efficient Neural Human Rendering

In this work we develop a generalizable and efficient Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) pipeline for high-fidelity free-viewpoint human body synthesis under settings with sparse camera views. Though existing NeRF-based methods can synthesize rather realistic details for human body, they tend to produce poor results when the input has self-occlusion, especially for unseen humans under sparse views. Moreover, these methods often require a large number of sampling points for rendering, which leads to low efficiency and limits their real-world applicability. To address these challenges, we propose a Geometry-guided Progressive NeRF (GP-NeRF). In particular, to better tackle self-occlusion, we devise a geometry-guided multi-view feature integration approach that utilizes the estimated geometry prior to integrate the incomplete information from input views and construct a complete geometry volume for the target human body. Meanwhile, for achieving higher rendering efficiency, we introduce a progressive rendering pipeline through geometry guidance, which leverages the geometric feature volume and the predicted density values to progressively reduce the number of sampling points and speed up the rendering process. Experiments on the ZJU-MoCap and THUman datasets show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-arts significantly across multiple generalization settings, while the time cost is reduced > 70% via applying our efficient progressive rendering pipeline.

Mean Field Games Master Equations with Non-separable Hamiltonians and Displacement Monotonicity

In this manuscript, we propose a structural condition on non-separable Hamiltonians, which we term displacement monotonicity condition, to study second order mean field games master equations. A rate of dissipation of a bilinear form is brought to bear a global (in time) well-posedness theory, based on a--priori uniform Lipschitz estimates on the solution in the measure variable. Displacement monotonicity being sometimes in dichotomy with the widely used Lasry-Lions monotonicity condition, the novelties of this work persist even when restricted to separable Hamiltonians.

Mean Field Games of Controls: Propagation of Monotonicities

The theory of Mean Field Game of Controls considers a class of mean field games where the interaction is through the joint distribution of the state and control. It is well known that, for standard mean field games, certain monotonicity condition is crucial to guarantee the uniqueness of mean field equilibria and then the global wellposedness for master equations. In the literature, the monotonicity condition could be the Lasry-Lions monotonicity, the displacement monotonicity, or the anti-monotonicity conditions. In this paper, we investigate all these three types of monotonicity conditions for Mean Field Games of Controls and show their propagation along the solutions to the master equations with common noises. In particular, we extend the displacement monotonicity to semi-monotonicity, whose propagation result is new even for standard mean field games. This is the first step towards the global wellposedness theory for master equations of Mean Field Games of Controls.

PoseTriplet: Co-evolving 3D Human Pose Estimation, Imitation, and Hallucination under Self-supervision

Existing self-supervised 3D human pose estimation schemes have largely relied on weak supervisions like consistency loss to guide the learning, which, inevitably, leads to inferior results in real-world scenarios with unseen poses. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised approach that allows us to explicitly generate 2D-3D pose pairs for augmenting supervision, through a self-enhancing dual-loop learning framework. This is made possible via introducing a reinforcement-learning-based imitator, which is learned jointly with a pose estimator alongside a pose hallucinator; the three components form two loops during the training process, complementing and strengthening one another. Specifically, the pose estimator transforms an input 2D pose sequence to a low-fidelity 3D output, which is then enhanced by the imitator that enforces physical constraints. The refined 3D poses are subsequently fed to the hallucinator for producing even more diverse data, which are, in turn, strengthened by the imitator and further utilized to train the pose estimator. Such a co-evolution scheme, in practice, enables training a pose estimator on self-generated motion data without relying on any given 3D data. Extensive experiments across various benchmarks demonstrate that our approach yields encouraging results significantly outperforming the state of the art and, in some cases, even on par with results of fully-supervised methods. Notably, it achieves 89.1% 3D PCK on MPI-INF-3DHP under self-supervised cross-dataset evaluation setup, improving upon the previous best self-supervised methods by 8.6%. Wellposedness of Second Order Master Equations for Mean Field Games with Nonsmooth Data

In this paper we study second order master equations arising from mean field games with common noise over arbitrary time duration. A classical solution typically requires the monotonicity condition (or small time duration) and sufficiently smooth data. While keeping the monotonicity condition, our goal is to relax the regularity of the data, which is an open problem in the literature. In particular, we do not require any differentiability in terms of the measures, which prevents us from obtaining classical solutions. We shall propose three weaker notions of solutions, named as {\it good solutions}, {\it weak solutions}, and {\it weak-viscosity solutions}, respectively, and establish the wellposedness of the master equation under all three notions. We emphasize that, due to the game nature, one cannot expect comparison principle even for classical solutions. The key for the global (in time) wellposedness is the uniform a priori estimate for the Lipschitz continuity of the solution in the measures. The monotonicity condition is crucial for this uniform estimate and thus is crucial for the existence of the global solution, but is not needed for the uniqueness in such Lipschitz class. To facilitate our analysis, we construct a smooth mollifier for functions on Wasserstein space, which is new in the literature and is interesting in its own right. Following the same approach of our wellposedness results, we prove the convergence of the Nash system, a high dimensional system of PDEs arising from the corresponding $N$-player game, under mild regularity requirements. We shall also prove a propagation of chaos property for the associated optimal trajectories.

Non-Equivalence of Stochastic Optimal Control Problems with Open and Closed Loop Controls

For an optimal control problem of an Itô's type stochastic differential equation, the control process could be taken as open-loop or closed-loop forms. In the standard literature, provided appropriate regularity, the value functions under these two types of controls are equal and are the unique (viscosity) solution to the corresponding (path-dependent) HJB equation. In this short note, we provide a counterexample in the path dependent setting showing that these value functions can be different in general.

Path Dependent Feynman-Kac Formula for Forward Backward Stochastic Volterra Integral Equations

This paper is concerned with the relationship between forward-backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (FBSVIEs, for short) and a system of (non-local in time) path dependent partial differential equations (PPDEs, for short). Due to the nature of Volterra type equations, the usual flow property (or semigroup property) does not hold. Inspired by Viens-Zhang \cite{Viens-Zhang-2019} and Wang-Yong \cite{Wang-Yong-2019}, auxiliary processes are introduced so that the flow property of adapted solutions to the FBSVIEs is recovered in a suitable sense, and thus the functional Itô's formula is applicable. Having achieved this stage, a natural PPDE is found so that the adapted solution of the backward SVIEs admits a representation in terms of the solution to the forward SVIE via the solution to a PPDE. On the other hand, the solution of the PPDE admits a representation in terms of adapted solution to the (path dependent) FBSVIE, which is referred to as a Feynman-Kac formula. This leads to the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution to the PPDE, under smoothness conditions on the coefficients of the FBSVIEs. Further, when the smoothness conditions are relaxed with the backward component of FBSVIE being one-dimensional, a new (and suitable) notion of viscosity solution is introduced for the PPDE, for which a comparison principle of the viscosity solutions is established, leading to the uniqueness of the viscosity solution. Finally, some results have been extended to coupled FBSVIEs and type-II BSVIEs, and a representation formula for the path derivatives of PPDE solution is obtained by a closer investigation of linear FBSVIEs.

Pressure induced superconductivity in WB2 and ReB2 through modifying the B layers

The recent discovery of superconductivity up to 32 K in the pressurized MoB2 reignites the interests in exploring high-Tc superconductors in transition-metal diborides. Inspired by that work, we turn our attention to the 5d transition-metal diborides. Here we systematically investigate the responses of both structural and physical properties of WB2 and ReB2 to external pressure, which possess different types of boron layers. Similar to MoB2, the pressure-induced superconductivity was also observed in WB2 above 60 GPa with a maximum Tc of 15 K at 100 GPa, while no superconductivity was detected in ReB2 in this pressure range. Interestingly, the structures at ambient pressure for both WB2 and ReB2 persist to high pressure without structural phase transitions. Theoretical calculations suggest that the ratio of flat boron layers in this class of transition-metal diborides may be crucial for the appearance of high Tc. The combined theoretical and experimental results highlight the effect of geometry of boron layers on superconductivity and shed light on the exploration of novel high-Tc superconductors in borides.

Dynamic Set Values for Nonzero Sum Games with Multiple Equilibriums

Nonzero sum games typically have multiple Nash equilibriums (or no equilibrium), and unlike the zero sum case, they may have different values at different equilibriums. Instead of focusing on the existence of individual equilibriums, we study the set of values over all equilibriums, which we call the set value of the game. The set value is unique by nature and always exists (with possible value $\emptyset$). Similar to the standard value function in control literature, it enjoys many nice properties such as regularity, stability, and more importantly the dynamic programming principle. There are two main features in order to obtain the dynamic programming principle: (i) we must use closed-loop controls (instead of open-loop controls); (ii) we must allow for path dependent controls, even if the problem is in a state dependent (Markovian) setting. We shall consider both discrete and continuous time models with finite time horizon. For the latter we will also provide a duality approach through certain standard PDE (or path dependent PDE), which is quite efficient for numerically computing the set value of the game.

Inference Stage Optimization for Cross-scenario 3D Human Pose Estimation

Existing 3D human pose estimation models suffer performance drop when applying to new scenarios with unseen poses due to their limited generalizability. In this work, we propose a novel framework, Inference Stage Optimization (ISO), for improving the generalizability of 3D pose models when source and target data come from different pose distributions. Our main insight is that the target data, even though not labeled, carry valuable priors about their underlying distribution. To exploit such information, the proposed ISO performs geometry-aware self-supervised learning (SSL) on each single target instance and updates the 3D pose model before making prediction. In this way, the model can mine distributional knowledge about the target scenario and quickly adapt to it with enhanced generalization performance. In addition, to handle sequential target data, we propose an online mode for implementing our ISO framework via streaming the SSL, which substantially enhances its effectiveness. We systematically analyze why and how our ISO framework works on diverse benchmarks under cross-scenario setup. Remarkably, it yields new state-of-the-art of 83.6% 3D PCK on MPI-INF-3DHP, improving upon the previous best result by 9.7%. Code will be released.

Time-consistent conditional expectation under probability distortion

We introduce a new notion of conditional nonlinear expectation under probability distortion. Such a distorted nonlinear expectation is not sub-additive in general, so it is beyond the scope of Peng's framework of nonlinear expectations. A more fundamental problem when extending the distorted expectation to a dynamic setting is time-inconsistency, that is, the usual "tower property" fails. By localizing the probability distortion and restricting to a smaller class of random variables, we introduce a so-called distorted probability and construct a conditional expectation in such a way that it coincides with the original nonlinear expectation at time zero, but has a time-consistent dynamics in the sense that the tower property remains valid. Furthermore, we show that in the continuous time model this conditional expectation corresponds to a parabolic differential equation whose coefficient involves the law of the underlying diffusion. This work is the first step towards a new understanding of nonlinear expectations under probability distortion, and will potentially be a helpful tool for solving time-inconsistent stochastic optimization problems.

Dynamic Approaches for Some Time Inconsistent Problems

In this paper we investigate possible approaches to study general time-inconsistent optimization problems without assuming the existence of optimal strategy. This leads immediately to the need to refine the concept of time-consistency as well as any method that is based on Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. The fundamental obstacle is the dilemma of having to invoke the {\it Dynamic Programming Principle} (DPP) in a time-inconsistent setting, which is contradictory in nature. The main contribution of this work is the introduction of the idea of the "dynamic utility" under which the original time inconsistent problem (under the fixed utility) becomes a time consistent one. As a benchmark model, we shall consider a stochastic controlled problem with multidimensional backward SDE dynamics, which covers many existing time-inconsistent problems in the literature as special cases, and we argue that the time inconsistency is essentially equivalent to the lack of {\it comparison principle}. We shall propose three approaches aiming at reviving the DPP in this setting: the duality approach, the dynamic utility approach, and the master equation approach. Unlike the game approach in many existing works in continuous time models, all our approaches produce the same value as the original static problem.

Pseudo Markovian Viscosity Solutions of Fully Nonlinear Degenerate PPDEs

In this paper we propose a new type of viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear path dependent PDEs. By restricting to certain pseudo Markovian structure, we remove the uniform non- degeneracy condition imposed in our earlier works [9, 10]. We establish the comparison principle under natural and mild conditions. Moreover, as applications we apply our results to two important classes of PPDEs: the stochastic HJB equations and the path dependent Isaacs equations, induced from the stochastic optimization with random coefficients and the path dependent zero sum game problem, respectively.

Viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic path dependent PDEs: Part II

In our previous paper [Ekren, Touzi and Zhang (2015)], we introduced a notion of viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear path-dependent PDEs, extending the semilinear case of Ekren et al. [Ann. Probab. 42 (2014) 204-236], which satisfies a partial comparison result under standard Lipshitz-type assumptions. The main result of this paper provides a full, well-posedness result under an additional assumption, formulated on some partial differential equation, defined locally by freezing the path. Namely, assuming further that such path-frozen standard PDEs satisfy the comparison principle and the Perron approach for existence, we prove that the nonlinear path-dependent PDE has a unique viscosity solution. Uniqueness is implied by a comparison result.

A monotone scheme for high-dimensional fully nonlinear PDEs

In this paper we propose a feasible numerical scheme for high-dimensional, fully nonlinear parabolic PDEs, which includes the quasi-linear PDE associated with a coupled FBSDE as a special case. Our paper is strongly motivated by the remarkable work Fahim, Touzi and Warin [Ann. Appl. Probab. 21 (2011) 1322-1364] and stays in the paradigm of monotone schemes initiated by Barles and Souganidis [Asymptot. Anal. 4 (1991) 271-283]. Our scheme weakens a critical constraint imposed by Fahim, Touzi and Warin (2011), especially when the generator of the PDE depends only on the diagonal terms of the Hessian matrix. Several numerical examples, up to dimension 12, are reported.

Comparison of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear degenerate parabolic Path-dependent PDEs

We prove a comparison result for viscosity solutions of (possibly degenerate) parabolic fully nonlinear path-dependent PDEs. In contrast with the previous result in Ekren, Touzi & Zhang, our conditions are easier to check and allow for the degenerate case, thus including first order path-dependent PDEs. Our argument follows the regularization method as introduced by Jensen, Lions & Souganidis in the corresponding finite-dimensional PDE setting. The present argument significantly simplifies the comparison proof in Ekren, Touzi & Zhang, but requires an $L^p-$type of continuity (with respect to the path) for the viscosity semi-solutions and for the nonlinearity defining the equation.

On well-posedness of forward-backward SDEs-A unified approach

In this paper, we study the well-posedness of the Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) in a general non-Markovian framework. The main purpose is to find a unified scheme which combines all existing methodology in the literature, and to address some fundamental longstanding problems for non-Markovian FBSDEs. An important device is a decoupling random field that is regular (uniformly Lipschitz in its spatial variable). We show that the regulariy of such decoupling field is closely related to the bounded solution to an associated characteristic BSDE, a backward stochastic Riccati-type equation with superlinear growth in both components $Y$ and $Z$. We establish various sufficient conditions for the well-posedness of an ODE that dominates the characteristic BSDE, which leads to the existence of the desired regular decoupling random field, whence the solvability of the original FBSDE. A synthetic analysis of the solvability is given, as a "User's Guide," for a large class of FBSDEs that are not covered by the existing methods. Some of them have important implications in applications.

Optimal stopping under adverse nonlinear expectation and related games

We study the existence of optimal actions in a zero-sum game $\inf_τ\sup_PE^P[X_τ]$ between a stopper and a controller choosing a probability measure. This includes the optimal stopping problem $\inf_τ\mathcal{E}(X_τ)$ for a class of sublinear expectations $\mathcal{E}(\cdot)$ such as the $G$-expectation. We show that the game has a value. Moreover, exploiting the theory of sublinear expectations, we define a nonlinear Snell envelope $Y$ and prove that the first hitting time $\inf\{t:Y_t=X_t\}$ is an optimal stopping time. The existence of a saddle point is shown under a compactness condition. Finally, the results are applied to the subhedging of American options under volatility uncertainty.

An overview of Viscosity Solutions of Path-Dependent PDEs

This paper provides an overview of the recently developed notion of viscosity solutions of path-dependent partial di erential equations. We start by a quick review of the Crandall- Ishii notion of viscosity solutions, so as to motivate the relevance of our de nition in the path-dependent case. We focus on the wellposedness theory of such equations. In partic- ular, we provide a simple presentation of the current existence and uniqueness arguments in the semilinear case. We also review the stability property of this notion of solutions, in- cluding the adaptation of the Barles-Souganidis monotonic scheme approximation method. Our results rely crucially on the theory of optimal stopping under nonlinear expectation. In the dominated case, we provide a self-contained presentation of all required results. The fully nonlinear case is more involved and is addressed in [12].

Comparison of Viscosity Solutions of Semi-linear Path-Dependent PDEs

This paper provides a probabilistic proof of the comparison result for viscosity solutions of path-dependent semilinear PDEs. We consider the notion of viscosity solutions introduced in \cite{EKTZ} which considers as test functions all those smooth processes which are tangent in mean. When restricted to the Markovian case, this definition induces a larger set of test functions, and reduces to the notion of stochastic viscosity solutions analyzed in \cite{BayraktarSirbu1,BayraktarSirbu2}. Our main result takes advantage of this enlargement of the test functions, and provides an easier proof of comparison. This is most remarkable in the context of the linear path-dependent heat equation. As a key ingredient for our methodology, we introduce a notion of punctual differentiation, similar to the corresponding concept in the standard viscosity solutions \cite{CaffarelliCabre}, and we prove that semimartingales are almost everywhere punctually differentiable. This smoothness result can be viewed as the counterpart of the Aleksandroff smoothness result for convex functions. A similar comparison result was established earlier in \cite{EKTZ}. The result of this paper is more general and, more importantly, the arguments that we develop do not rely on any representation of the solution.

Dynamic Equilibrium Limit Order Book Model and Optimal Execution Problem

In this paper we propose a dynamic model of Limit Order Book (LOB). The main feature of our model is that the shape of the LOB is determined endogenously by an expected utility function via a competitive equilibrium argument. Assuming zero resilience, the resulting equilibrium density of the LOB is random, nonlinear, and time inhomogeneous. Consequently, the liquidity cost can be defined dynamically in a natural way. We next study an optimal execution problem in our model. We verify that the value function satisfies the Dynamic Programming Principle, and is a viscosity solution to the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation which is in the form of an integro-partial-differential quasi-variational inequality. We also prove the existence and analyze the structure of the optimal strategy via a verification theorem argument, assuming that the PDE has a classical solution.

Large Deviations for Non-Markovian Diffusions and a Path-Dependent Eikonal Equation

This paper provides a large deviation principle for Non-Markovian, Brownian motion driven stochastic differential equations with random coefficients. Similar to Gao and Liu \cite{GL}, this extends the corresponding results collected in Freidlin and Wentzell \cite{FreidlinWentzell}. However, we use a different line of argument, adapting the PDE method of Fleming \cite{Fleming} and Evans and Ishii \cite{EvansIshii} to the path-dependent case, by using backward stochastic differential techniques. Similar to the Markovian case, we obtain a characterization of the action function as the unique bounded solution of a path-dependent version of the Eikonal equation. Finally, we provide an application to the short maturity asymptotics of the implied volatility surface in financial mathematics.

Monotone Schemes for Fully Nonlinear Parabolic Path Dependent PDEs

In this paper we extend the results of the seminal work Barles and Souganidis \cite{BS} to path dependent case. Based on the viscosity theory of path dependent PDEs, developed by Ekren, Keller, Touzi and Zhang \cite{EKTZ} and Ekren, Touzi and Zhang \cite{ETZ0, ETZ1, ETZ2}, we show that a monotone scheme converges to the unique viscosity solution of the (fully nonlinear) parabolic path dependent PDE. An example of such monotone scheme is proposed. Moreover, in the case that the solution is smooth enough, we obtain the rate of convergence of our scheme.

On viscosity solutions of path dependent PDEs

In this paper we propose a notion of viscosity solutions for path dependent semi-linear parabolic PDEs. This can also be viewed as viscosity solutions of non-Markovian backward SDEs, and thus extends the well-known nonlinear Feynman-Kac formula to non-Markovian case. We shall prove the existence, uniqueness, stability and comparison principle for the viscosity solutions. Pathwise Itô Calculus for Rough Paths and Rough PDEs with Path Dependent Coefficients

This paper introduces the path derivatives, in the spirit of Dupire's functional Itô calculus, for the controlled paths in the rough path theory with possibly non-geometric rough paths. The theory allows us to deal with rough integration and rough PDEs in the same manner as standard stochastic calculus. We next study rough PDEs with coefficients depending on the rough path itself, which corresponds to stochastic PDEs with random coefficients. Such coefficients is less regular in the time variable and is not covered in the existing literature. The results are useful for studying viscosity solutions of stochastic PDEs.

Viscosity Solutions of Fully Nonlinear Parabolic Path Dependent PDEs: Part I

The main objective of this paper and the accompanying one \cite{ETZ2} is to provide a notion of viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear parabolic path-dependent PDEs. Our definition extends our previous work \cite{EKTZ}, focused on the semilinear case, and is crucially based on the nonlinear optimal stopping problem analyzed in \cite{ETZ0}. We prove that our notion of viscosity solutions is consistent with the corresponding notion of classical solutions, and satisfies a stability property and a partial comparison result. The latter is a key step for the wellposedness results established in \cite{ETZ2}. We also show that the value processes of path-dependent stochastic control problems are viscosity solutions of the corresponding path dependent dynamic programming equation.

In this paper we establish a complete representation theorem for $G$-martingales. Dual formulation of second order target problems

This paper provides a new formulation of second order stochastic target problems introduced in [SIAM J. Control Optim. 48 (2009) 2344-2365] by modifying the reference probability so as to allow for different scales. This new ingredient enables us to prove a dual formulation of the target problem as the supremum of the solutions of standard backward stochastic differential equations. In particular, in the Markov case, the dual problem is known to be connected to a fully nonlinear, parabolic partial differential equation and this connection can be viewed as a stochastic representation for all nonlinear, scalar, second order, parabolic equations with a convex Hessian dependence.

Optimal Stopping under Nonlinear Expectation

Let $X$ be a bounded càdlàg process with positive jumps defined on the canonical space of continuous paths. We consider the problem of optimal stopping the process $X$ under a nonlinear expectation operator $\cE$ defined as the supremum of expectations over a weakly compact family of nondominated measures. We introduce the corresponding nonlinear Snell envelope. Our main objective is to extend the Snell envelope characterization to the present context. Namely, we prove that the nonlinear Snell envelope is an $\cE-$supermartingale, and an $\cE-$martingale up to its first hitting time of the obstacle $X$. This result is obtained under an additional uniform continuity property of $X$. We also extend the result in the context of a random horizon optimal stopping problem. This result is crucial for the newly developed theory of viscosity solutions of path-dependent PDEs as introduced in Ekren et al., in the semilinear case, and extended to the fully nonlinear case in the accompanying papers (Ekren, Touzi, and Zhang, parts I and II).

Pathwise Taylor Expansions for Random Fields on Multiple Dimensional Paths

In this paper we establish the pathwise Taylor expansions for random fields that are "regular" in the spirit of Dupire's path-derivatives \cite{Dupire}. Our result is motivated by but extends the recent result of Buckdahn-Bulla-Ma \cite{BBM}, when translated into the language of pathwise calculus. We show that with such a language the pathwise Taylor expansion can be naturally carried out to any order and for any dimension, and it coincides with the existing results when reduced to these special settings. More importantly, the expansion can be both "forward" and "backward" (i.e., the temporal increments can be both positive and negative), and the remainder is estimated in a pathwise manner. This result will be the main building block for our new notion of viscosity solution to forward path-dependent PDEs corresponding to (forward) stochastic PDEs in our accompanying paper \cite{BMZ}.

Optimal Portfolio Selection under Concave Price Impact

In this paper we study an optimal portfolio selection problem under instantaneous price impact. Based on some empirical analysis in the literature, we model such impact as a concave function of the trading size when the trading size is small. The price impact can be thought of as either a liquidity cost or a transaction cost, but the concavity nature of the cost leads to some fundamental difference from those in the existing literature. We show that the problem can be reduced to an impulse control problem, but without fixed cost, and that the value function is a viscosity solution to a special type of Quasi-Variational Inequality (QVI). We also prove directly (without using the solution to the QVI) that the optimal strategy exists and more importantly, despite the absence of a fixed cost, it is still in a "piecewise constant" form, reflecting a more practical perspective.

Quasi-sure Stochastic Analysis through Aggregation

This paper is on developing stochastic analysis simultaneously under a general family of probability measures that are not dominated by a single probability measure. The interest in this question originates from the probabilistic representations of fully nonlinear partial differential equations and applications to mathematical finance. The existing literature relies either on the capacity theory (by Denis and Martini), or on the underlying nonlinear partial differential equation (by Peng). In both approaches, the resulting theory requires the smoothness of the corresponding processes and random variables in terms of the underlying canonical process. In this paper, we investigate this question for a larger class of "non-smooth" processes, but with a restricted family of non-dominated probability measures. For smooth processes, our approach leads to similar results as in previous literature, provided the restricted family satisfies an additional density property.

Some Norm Estimates for Semimartingales

In this paper we introduce a new type of norms for semimartingales, under both linear and nonlinear expectations. Our norm is defined in the spirit of quasimartingales, and it characterizes square integrable semimartingales. This work is motivated by our study of zero-sum stochastic differential games \cite{PZ}, whose value process is conjectured to be a semimartingale under a class of probability measures. As a by product, we establish some a priori estimates for doubly reflected BSDEs without imposing the Mokobodski's condition directly.

Two Person Zero-sum Game in Weak Formulation and Path Dependent Bellman-Isaacs Equation

In this paper we study a two person zero sum stochastic differential game in weak formulation. Unlike standard literature which uses strategy type of controls, the weak formulation allows us to consider the game with control against control. We shall prove the existence of game value under natural conditions. Another main feature of the paper is that we allow for non-Markovian structure, and thus the game value is a random process. We characterize the value process as the unique viscosity solution of the corresponding path dependent Bellman-Isaacs equation, a notion recently introduced by Ekren, Keller, Touzi and Zhang (arXiv:1109.5971) and Ekren, Touzi and Zhang.

Wellposedness of Second Order Backward SDEs

We provide an existence and uniqueness theory for an extension of backward SDEs to the second order. While standard Backward SDEs are naturally connected to semilinear PDEs, our second order extension is connected to fully nonlinear PDEs, as suggested by Cheridito et.al. In particular, we provide a fully nonlinear extension of the Feynman-Kac formula. Unlike the earlier papers, the alternative formulation of this paper insists that the equation must hold under a non-dominated family of mutually singular probability measures. The key argument is a stochastic representation, suggested by the optimal control interpretation, and analyzed in our accompanying paper

Backward SDEs with constrained jumps and quasi-variational inequalities

We consider a class of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven by Brownian motion and Poisson random measure, and subject to constraints on the jump component. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the minimal solution for the BSDEs by using a penalization approach. Moreover, we show that under mild conditions the minimal solutions to these constrained BSDEs can be characterized as the unique viscosity solution of quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs), which leads to a probabilistic representation for solutions to QVIs. Such a representation in particular gives a new stochastic formula for value functions of a class of impulse control problems. As a direct consequence, this suggests a numerical scheme for the solution of such QVIs via the simulation of the penalized BSDEs.

Estimating nonlinearities in twophase flow in porous media

In order to analyze numerically inverse problems several techniques based on linear and nonlinear stability analysis are presented. These techniques are illustrated on the problem of estimating mobilities and capillary pressure in one-dimensional two-phase displacements in porous media that are performed in laboratories. This is an example of the problem of estimating nonlinear coefficients in a system of nonlinear partial differential equations.
