Retrieval Augmented Question Answering: When Should LLMs Admit Ignorance?

The success of expanded context windows in Large Language Models (LLMs) has driven increased use of broader context in retrieval-augmented generation. We investigate the use of LLMs for retrieval augmented question answering. While longer contexts make it easier to incorporate targeted knowledge, they introduce more irrelevant information that hinders the model's generation process and degrades its performance. To address the issue, we design an adaptive prompting strategy which involves splitting the retrieved information into smaller chunks and sequentially prompting a LLM to answer the question using each chunk. Adjusting the chunk size allows a trade-off between incorporating relevant information and reducing irrelevant information. Experimental results on three open-domain question answering datasets demonstrate that the adaptive strategy matches the performance of standard prompting while using fewer tokens. Our analysis reveals that when encountering insufficient information, the LLM often generates incorrect answers instead of declining to respond, which constitutes a major source of error. This finding highlights the need for further research into enhancing LLMs' ability to effectively decline requests when faced with inadequate information.

ED2LM: Encoder-Decoder to Language Model for Faster Document Re-ranking Inference

State-of-the-art neural models typically encode document-query pairs using cross-attention for re-ranking. To this end, models generally utilize an encoder-only (like BERT) paradigm or an encoder-decoder (like T5) approach. These paradigms, however, are not without flaws, i.e., running the model on all query-document pairs at inference-time incurs a significant computational cost. This paper proposes a new training and inference paradigm for re-ranking. We propose to finetune a pretrained encoder-decoder model using in the form of document to query generation. Subsequently, we show that this encoder-decoder architecture can be decomposed into a decoder-only language model during inference. This results in significant inference time speedups since the decoder-only architecture only needs to learn to interpret static encoder embeddings during inference. Our experiments show that this new paradigm achieves results that are comparable to the more expensive cross-attention ranking approaches while being up to 6.8X faster. We believe this work paves the way for more efficient neural rankers that leverage large pretrained models.

Recycling of Perovskite Substrate

The use of water-soluble sacrificial layer of Sr$_3$Al$_2$O$_6$ has tremendously boosted the research on freestanding functional oxide thin films, especially thanks to its ultimate capability to produce high-quality epitaxial perovskite thin films. However, the costly single-crystalline substrates, e.g. SrTiO$_3$, were generally discarded after obtaining the freestanding thin films. Here, we demonstrate that the SrTiO$_3$ substrates can be recycled to fabricate La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films with nearly identical structural and electrical properties. After attaining freestanding thin films, the residues on SrTiO$_3$ can be removed by 80 \degree C hot water soaking and rinsing treatments. Consequently, the surface of SrTiO$_3$ reverted to its original step-and-terrace structure.

Zero-shot Neural Passage Retrieval via Domain-targeted Synthetic Question Generation

A major obstacle to the wide-spread adoption of neural retrieval models is that they require large supervised training sets to surpass traditional term-based techniques, which are constructed from raw corpora. In this paper, we propose an approach to zero-shot learning for passage retrieval that uses synthetic question generation to close this gap. The question generation system is trained on general domain data, but is applied to documents in the targeted domain. This allows us to create arbitrarily large, yet noisy, question-passage relevance pairs that are domain specific. Furthermore, when this is coupled with a simple hybrid term-neural model, first-stage retrieval performance can be improved further. Empirically, we show that this is an effective strategy for building neural passage retrieval models in the absence of large training corpora. Depending on the domain, this technique can even approach the accuracy of supervised models.

QURIOUS: Question Generation Pretraining for Text Generation

Recent trends in natural language processing using pretraining have shifted focus towards pretraining and fine-tuning approaches for text generation. Often the focus has been on task-agnostic approaches that generalize the language modeling objective. We propose question generation as a pretraining method, which better aligns with the text generation objectives. Our text generation models pretrained with this method are better at understanding the essence of the input and are better language models for the target task. When evaluated on two text generation tasks, abstractive summarization and answer-focused question generation, our models result in state-of-the-art performances in terms of automatic metrics. Human evaluators also found our summaries and generated questions to be more natural, concise and informative.

Entanglement dynamics of electrons and photons

Entanglement is a fundamental feature of quantum theory as well as a key resource for quantum computing and quantum communication, but the entanglement mechanism has not been found at present. We think when the two subsystems exist interaction directly or indirectly, they can be in entanglement state. such as, in the Jaynes-Cummings model, the entanglement between an atom and light field comes from their interaction. In this paper, we have studied the entanglement mechanism of electron-electron and photon-photon, which are from the spin-spin interaction. We found their total entanglement states are relevant both space state and spin state. When two electrons or two photons are far away, their entanglement states should be disappeared even if their spin state is entangled.

Two-dimensional function photonic crystals

In this paper, we have firstly proposed two-dimensional function photonic crystals, which the dielectric constants of medium columns are the functions of space coordinates $\vec{r}$, it is different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals constituting by the medium columns of dielectric constants are constants. We find the band gaps of two-dimensional function photonic crystals are different from the two-dimensional conventional photonic crystals, and when the functions form of dielectric constants are different, the band gaps structure should be changed, which can be designed into the appropriate band gaps structures by the two-dimensional function photonic crystals.

In this paper, we have proposed the compound structure of one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC), which includes series connection and parallel connection PC. We have studied the transmission characteristics of series connection and parallel connection PC, and obtained some new results. In addition, we have proved the series connection one-dimensional PC can realize the logical AND operation, and the parallel connection one-dimensional PC can realize the logical OR operation. The compound structure of one-dimensional PC can design more new type structure optical devices, and will provide the basic for designing quantum computer.

Quantum effect of one-dimensional photonic crystal

In this paper, we have studied the quantum transmission characteristics of one-dimensional photonic crystal with and without defect layer by the quantum theory approach, and compared the calculation results of classical with quantum theory. We have found some new quantum effects in the one-dimensional photonic crystal. When the incident angle $θ=0$, there is no quantum effect. When the incident angle $θ\neq0$, we find there are obvious quantum effect with the incident angle increase. At the incident angle $θ\neq0$, there are also quantum effect with the change of thickness and refractive indexes of medium $B$ or $A$. We think the new quantum effect of photonic crystal shall help us to design optical devices.

Quantum entanglement degrees amplifier

The quantum entangled degrees of entangled states become smaller with the transmission distance increasing, how to keep the purity of quantum entangled states is the puzzle in quantum communication. In the paper, we have designed a new type entanglement degrees amplifier by one-dimensional photonic crystal, which is similar as the relay station of classical electromagnetic communication. We find when the entangled states of two-photon and three-photon pass through photonic crystal, their entanglement degrees can be magnified, which make the entanglement states can be long range propagation and the quantum communication can be really realized.

In the paper, we have designed optical triode with one-dimensional function photonic crystal, and analyzed the effect of period number, medium thickness and refractive index, incident angle, the irradiation way and intensity of pump light on the optical triode magnification. We obtain some valuable results, which shall help to optimal design optical triode.

Three-electron spin states and entanglement states

In this paper, we have given the symmetrical and antisymmetrical spin and space wave functions of three-electron, and further given the full total entanglement states for the three-electron, which are related to their space and spin wave function. When we study particles entanglement we not only consider their spin entanglement and also consider their space entanglement. Otherwise, we find that electrons entanglement are restricted to the teeny range, when electrons exceed the space range, their entanglement should be broken down even disappearance, which is accordance with the experiments results.

Full Quantum Theory of ${C_{60}}$ Double-slit Diffraction

In this paper, we apply the full new method of quantum theory to study the double-slit diffraction of ${C_{60}}$ molecules. We calculate the double-slit wave functions of ${C_{60}}$ molecules by Schrödinger equation, and calculate the diffraction wave function behind the slits with the Feynman path integral quantum theory, and then give the relation between the diffraction intensity of double-slit and diffraction pattern position. We compare the calculation results with two different double-slit diffraction experiments. When the decoherence effects are considered, the calculation results are in good agreement with the two experimental data.

Quantum theory of light double-slit diffraction

In this paper, we study the light double-slit diffraction experiment with quantum theory approach. Firstly, we calculate the light wave function in slits by quantum theory of photon. Secondly, we calculate the diffraction wave function with Kirchhoff's law. Thirdly, we give the diffraction intensity of light double-slit diffraction, which is proportional to the square of diffraction wave function. Finally, we compare calculation result of quantum theory and classical electromagnetic theory with the experimental data. We find the quantum calculate result is accordance with the experiment data, and the classical calculation result with certain deviation. So, the quantum theory is more accurately approach for studying light diffraction.

We give the quantum transform matrix, quantum dispersion relation and quantum transmissivity, and compare them with the classical dispersion relation and classical transmissivity. By the calculation, we find the classical and quantum dispersion relation and transmissivity are identical. The new approach can be studied two-dimensional and three-dimensional photonic crystals.
