More on measurable algebras and Rademacher systems with applications to analysis of Riesz spaces

We find necessary and sufficient conditions on a family $\mathcal{R} = (r_i)_{i \in I}$ in a Boolean algebra $\mathcal{B}$ under which there exists a unique positive probability measure $μ$ on $\mathcal{B}$ such that $μ( \bigcap_{k=1}^n θ_k r_{i_k} ) = 2^{-n}$ for all finite collections of distinct indices $i_1, \ldots, i_n \in I$ and all collections of signs $θ_1, \ldots, θ_n \in \{-1,1\}$, where the product $θx$ of a sign $θ$ by an element $x \in \mathcal{B}$ is defined by setting $1 x = x$ and $-1 x = - x = \mathbf{1} \setminus x$. Such a family we call a complete Rademacher family. We prove that Dedekind $σ$-complete Boolean algebras admitting complete Rademacher systems of the same cardinality are isomorphic. As a consequence, we obtain that a Dedekind $σ$-complete Boolean algebra is homogeneous measurable if and only if it admits a complete Rademacher family. This new way to define a measure on a Boolean algebra allows us to define classical systems on an arbitrary Riesz space, such as Rademacher and Haar. We define a complete Rademacher system of any cardinality and a countable complete Haar system on an element $e > 0$ of a vector lattice $E$ in such a way that if $e$ is an order unit of $E$ then the corresponding systems become complete for the entire $E$. We prove that if $E$ is Dedekind complete then any complete Haar system on $e$ is an order Schauder basis for the ideal $A_e$ generated by $e$. Finally, we develop a theory of integration in a Riesz space of elements of the band $B_e$ generated by a fixed $e > 0$ with respect to the measure on the Boolean algebra $\mathfrak{F}_e$ of fragments of $e$ generated by a complete Rademacher family on $\mathfrak{F}_e$. Much space is devoted to examples showing that our way of thinking is sharp (e.g., we show the essentiality of each of the condition in the definition of a Rademacher family).

A Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method for time-implicit multidimensional hydrodynamics

This work is a continuation of our efforts to develop an efficient implicit solver for multidimensional hydrodynamics for the purpose of studying important physical processes in stellar interiors, such as turbulent convection and overshooting. We present an implicit solver that results from the combination of a Jacobian-Free Newton-Krylov method and a preconditioning technique tailored to the inviscid, compressible equations of stellar hydrodynamics. We assess the accuracy and performance of the solver for both 2D and 3D problems for Mach numbers down to $10^{-6}$. Although our applications concern flows in stellar interiors, the method can be applied to general advection and/or diffusion-dominated flows. The method presented in this paper opens up new avenues in 3D modeling of realistic stellar interiors allowing the study of important problems in stellar structure and evolution.

Preliminary results of giant pulse investigations from Crab pulsar with Radioastron

Giant pulses from Crab pulsar were observed together with Radioastron space radiotelescope, Global EVN radio telescopes and Kvazar-KVO VLBI stations to study the scattering effects in the ISM. Five observing sessions were conducted at 18 cm (EVN codes: EG060A, EG060B, EG067B, EG075) and one at 92 cm (EVN code: GS033A). We have estimated distance to the scattering screen, angular size of scattering disk, scattering time. All estimations were done in an assumption of single thin scattering screen. Also, a significant change in the shape of cross-correlation functions for space-ground baselines was found (starting from 4 up to 12 Earth diameters).

Basis entropy in Banach spaces

We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.

Narrow orthogonally additive operators

We extend the notion of narrow operators to nonlinear maps on vector lattices. The main objects are orthogonally additive operators and, in particular, abstract Uryson operators. Most of the results extend known theorems obtained by O. Maslyuchenko, V. Mykhaylyuk and the second named author published in Positivity 13 (2009), pp. 459--495, for linear operators. For instance, we prove that every orthogonally additive laterally-to-norm continuous C-compact operator from an atomless Dedekind complete vector lattice to a Banach space is narrow. Another result asserts that the set U_{on}^{lc}(E,F) of all order narrow laterally continuous abstract Uryson operators is a band in the vector lattice of all laterally continuous abstract Uryson operators from an atomless vector lattice E with the principal projection property to a Dedekind complete vector lattice F. The band generated by the disjointness preserving laterally continuous abstract Uryson operators is the orthogonal complement to U_{n}^{lc}(E,F).

Numerical index of absolute sums of Banach spaces

We study the numerical index of absolute sums of Banach spaces, giving general conditions which imply that the numerical index of the sum is less or equal than the infimum of the numerical indices of the summands and we provide some examples where the equality holds covering the already known case of $c_0$-, $\ell_1$- and $\ell_\infty$-sums and giving as a new result the case of $E$-sums where $E$ has the RNP and $n(E)=1$ (in particular for finite-dimensional $E$ with $n(E)=1$). We also show that the numerical index of a Banach space $Z$ which contains a dense increasing union of one-complemented subspaces is greater or equal than the limit superior of the numerical indices of those subspaces. Using these results, we give a detailed short proof of the already known fact that the numerical indices of all infinite-dimensional $L_p(μ)$-spaces coincide.

On the numerical index of real $L_p(μ)$-spaces

We give a lower bound for the numerical index of the real space $L_p(μ)$ showing, in particular, that it is non-zero for $p\neq 2$. In other words, it is shown that for every bounded linear operator $T$ on the real space $L_p(μ)$, one has $$ \sup{\Bigl|\int |x|^{p-1}\sign(x) T x dμ\Bigr| : x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{M_p}{12\e}\|T\| $$ where $M_p=\max_{t\in[0,1]}\frac{|t^{p-1}-t|}{1+t^p}>0$ for every $p\neq 2$. It is also shown that for every bounded linear operator $T$ on the real space $L_p(μ)$, one has $$ \sup{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx| dμ: x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{1}{2\e}\|T\|. $$

On the numerical radius of operators in Lebesgue spaces

We show that the absolute numerical index of the space $L_p(μ)$ is $p^{-1/p} q^{-1/q}$ (where $1/p+1/q=1$). In other words, we prove that $$ \sup\{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx|\, dμ\, : \ x\in L_p(μ),\,\|x\|_p=1\} \,\geq \,p^{-\frac{1}{p}} q^{-\frac{1}{q}}\,\|T\| $$ for every $T\in \mathcal{L}(L_p(μ))$ and that this inequality is the best possible when the dimension of $L_p(μ)$ is greater than one. We also give lower bounds for the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the operator norm in $L_p(μ)$ for atomless $μ$ when restricting to rank-one operators or narrow operators.
