Slice continuity for operators and the Daugavet property for bilinear maps

We introduce and analyse the notion of slice continuity between operators on Banach spaces in the setting of the Daugavet property. It is shown that under the slice continuity assumption the Daugavet equation holds for weakly compact operators. As an application we define and characterise the Daugavet property for bilinear maps, and we prove that this allows us to describe some $p$-convexifications of the Daugavet equation for operators on Banach function spaces that have recently been introduced.

Lushness, numerical index 1 and the Daugavet property in rearrangement invariant spaces

We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are $c_0$, $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ is $L_1[0,1]$; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ with the Daugavet property over the reals.

Thickness of the unit sphere, $\ell_1$-types, and the almost Daugavet property

We study those Banach spaces $X$ for which $S_X$ does not admit a finite $\eps$-net consisting of elements of $S_X$ for any $\eps < 2$. We give characterisations of this class of spaces in terms of $\ell_1$-type sequences and in terms of the almost Daugavet property. The main result of the paper is: a separable Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a space from this class if and only if $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$.

Quotients of Banach spaces with the Daugavet property

We consider a general concept of Daugavet property with respect to a norming subspace. This concept covers both the usual Daugavet property and its weak$^*$ analogue. We introduce and study analogues for narrow operators and rich subspaces in this general setting and apply the results to show that a quotient of $L_1[0,1]$ over an $\ell_1$-subspace can fail the Daugavet property. The latter answers a question posed to us by A. Pelczynski in the negative.

A Banach space with the Schur and the Daugavet property

We show that a minor refinement of the Bourgain-Rosenthal construction of a Banach space without the Radon-Nikodym property which contains no bounded $δ$-trees yields a space with the Daugavet property and the Schur property. Using this example we answer some open questions on the structure of such spaces; in particular we show that the Daugavet property is not inherited by ultraproducts.

Lipschitz spaces and M-ideals

For a metric space $(K,d)$ the Banach space $\Lip(K)$ consists of all scalar-valued bounded Lipschitz functions on $K$ with the norm $\|f\|_{L}=\max(\|f\|_{\infty},L(f))$, where $L(f)$ is the Lipschitz constant of $f$. The closed subspace $\lip(K)$ of $\Lip(K)$ contains all elements of $\Lip(K)$ satisfying the $\lip$-condition $\lim_{0<d(x,y)\to 0}|f(x)-f(y)|/d(x,y)=0$. For $K=([0,1],| {\cdot} |^α)$, $0<α<1$, we prove that $\lip(K)$ is a proper $M$-ideal in a certain subspace of $\Lip(K)$ containing a copy of $\ell^{\infty}$.

Narrow operators on vector-valued sup-normed spaces

We characterise narrow and strong Daugavet operators on $C(K,E)$-spaces; these are in a way the largest sensible classes of operators for which the norm equation $\|Id+T\| = 1+\|T\|$ is valid. For certain separable range spaces $E$ including all finite-dimensional ones and locally uniformly convex ones we show that an unconditionally pointwise convergent sum of narrow operators on $C(K,E)$ is narrow, which implies for instance the known result that these spaces do not have unconditional FDDs. In a different vein, we construct two narrow operators on $C([0,1],\ell_1)$ whose sum is not narrow.

Banach spaces with the Daugavet property

A Banach space $X$ is said to have the Daugavet property if every operator $T: X\to X$ of rank~$1$ satisfies $\|Id+T\| = 1+\|T\|$. We show that then every weakly compact operator satisfies this equation as well and that $X$ contains a copy of $\ell_{1}$. However, $X$ need not contain a copy of $L_{1}$. We also study pairs of spaces $X\subset Y$ and operators $T: X\to Y$ satisfying $\|J+T\|=1+\|T\|$, where $J: X\to Y$ is the natural embedding. This leads to the result that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not embed into a space with an unconditional basis. In another direction, we investigate spaces where the set of operators with $\|Id+T\|=1+\|T\|$ is as small as possible and give characterisations in terms of a smoothness condition.

Property $(M)$, $M$-ideals, and almost isometric structure of Banach spaces

We study $M$-ideals of compact operators by means of the property~$(M)$ introduced in \cite{Kal-M}. Our main result states for a separable Banach space $X$ that the space of compact operators on $X$ is an $M$-ideal in the space of bounded operators if (and only if) $X$ does not contain a copy of $\ell_{1}$, has the metric compact approximation property, and has property~$(M)$. The investigation of special versions of property~$(M)$ leads to results on almost isometric structure of some classes of Banach spaces. For instance, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach space to embed almost isometrically into an $\ell_{p}$-sum of finite-dimensional spaces resp.\ into $c_{0}$, and for $2<p<\iy$ we prove that a subspace of $L_{p}$ embeds almost isometrically into $\ell_{p}$ if and only if it does not contain a subspace isomorphic to $\ell_{2}$.
